is it me or is \’my first first love\’ (jisoo\’s new drama on netflix) really that bad?

I was legitimately so excited for this but the first episode was so shallow and juvenile I found myself skipping to the last episode to see what ended up happening. The only thing that stuck out as worthy to me was the leads’ friendship. Ji Soo as an airhead puppy was cute for about five seconds and I’m not sure if it’s the acting skill or just the character that isn’t working out :/

Arghh. WhAt a bummer. I needed something light and thought this will do.

It’s pretty much a rehash of Because This is The First Time starring SHINEE’s Minho and Park So Dam, but…dumber. I mean I can’t really be a fair judge because I only watched two episodes (first and last). I just thought it sucked because they took everything that made the first series so wonderful and replaced it with glitter and sparkles. I get it’s a ‘youth’ drama, but you can have depth while showing the simpleness of young people’s emotions (e.g. Reply 1997)

I’m still gonna tune in to the next season though because the last episode has an open ending and apparently they’ve shot 16 episodes of this (and I need to know if Ji Soo gets the fricking girl because as much as this disappointed me I still shipped the leads, they were cute)

yeah, i “watched” it with the preview button on netflix. i couldn’t believe what i was seeing, ugh. i liked the second couple better than anything in the series, though. i’m thinking i’ll just read comments on how the second part of the season goes, lol.

i was so excited i had a reminder for it and five minutes in episode 1 is all too much already i had to stop.

sorry jisoo, noona had to pass this one up.

ryan gold is already softening up in ep 3 but he was such an ass in the first couple of episodes that i can\’t wait for him to fall to the ground and beg deok mi to step on him

i\’ve spent some time with MotS, listened to it about 4-5 times from start to finish, and the unsettling thing about it was that except for a few parts here and there, it was very hard to remember it was a _BTS_ album unless i actively reminded myself \”oh yes, this is BTS.\” even on Tear, (which I liked) and which some people did not like because it was Pop, you could still tell it was BTS, but here not so much.

i\’m seeing so much love for this album on my twitter and my guess is that a lot of the fans BTS has made since seeping into the american mainstream actually liked them _because_ of their close-to-pop sound, and since this took that to the next step, it makes sense that they\’re so happy.

this is not a comment on the inherent goodness of the musicality of their songs. i don\’t have enough music theory to talk about what works what doesn\’t but just my reaction as a fan on the overall mood of the album.

i\’m all here for bands exploring diverse sounds, be it pop or whichever, and growing musically, but i want to see what makes them _them_ in the new music as well. which is what i think is disappointing about this.

I have to agree. I do think Persona, the intro song, meets the standard. But the rest of it is disconnected – there’s nothing Jungian or philosophical about it. And the songs blend into one another. I do think they needed more time to produce this, and perhaps with all the big name western producers, BTS’s producers weren’t able to exert as much artistic control this time.

This album is western pop for the western market.

    2
    2

maybe that was part of the problem you know? when the title and persona came out i think we all expected it to be a high-concept art album but…. it’s not.

      1
      1

Yeah. I don’t think this is bad music per se. The songs are easy to listen to and I’ve been listening to them aaram se. The problem is my expectations from a BTS album with this Jungian concept were too high

        1

yeah. the highs and lows of the fangirl life. sigh.

Even as someone who hasn’t listened to a lot of BTS, I thought the same, that it wasn’t very BTS and more an the poppier side. BUT, such is the case of older artists. They sometimes change or try different things over time that might appeal some people/newer fans and totally not to others/older fans.

      4
      1

yeah. it was a bit of a throwback to the last time this happened for me which was with linkin park. i grew up on their hybrid theory/meteora era stuff and listening to their stuff on a thousand suns was a bit of a whiplash. i went back to one more light when i heard the news about chester [=(] and i found that i actually really liked the album even though it was really different from the LP i was used to. i hope in the next few albums BTS continues to explore if that’s what they want, but retain their character a bit more.

        2
        1

LP is my favorite band and a very true statement indeed. Their sound changed and grew, but damn if it still wasn’t good – just evolved. But it was definitely unexpected and in the beginning almost jarring. But, looking back you can see the evolution. (Their last album is amazing btw)

I think it’s expected for groups to change up their sound if they have been around long enough. We would probably be complaining if their sound was still the same saying that all the songs sound alike lol

The LY era marked a change to their sound, I just see Persona as a natural follow up. I listen to BTS because their individual songs speak to me, not because their songs fit into a genre of music I prefer. As long as they keep making music that I enjoy I will keep listening 😊

          3
          1

yeah, we definitely would have complained if their sound had remained the same, lol. it’s true that persona seems like a logical follow up of the LY era ( which i liked) but something about it just didn’t work for my personal taste. maybe i just had too many expectations, idk. i just hope i get to like a future BTS album as much as i liked LP’s last album. ^^

    This, this, and this again.

I was just talking about the album with greenfields and sicarius over on greenfields’ fanwall. Kaleidoscopic talked a bit more about the mixing here. So just know that you’re not alone in your disappointment and your feeling that this is a bad album.

    2
    1

i read the discussion on greenfields’ fan wall ( hard agree with everything said there) but just saw the thread on mixing… and yeah… i’m curious where they’ll go from here though, musically.

It wasn’t the best drama but I liked it. Probably because it has two of the Model Avengers and I love all of them but oddly enough I haven’t liked but a few of their dramas.

        0

I kind of liked it too. And the model avengers made it watchable. And Do-han’s first role as well!

ah! okay, with all your endorsements, i will give it a go 😀

Actually they kind of manage to nullify it. As in, the legal recourse re the step father – step daughter madness is the right path. Also the mum equation.

So it’s kind of fine, but also really weird. 🤣 The drama is alright. Watch it until you can’t.

        2

I enjoyed it, but I still can’t get over how bizarre the OTP was. Like, what? They do try to resolve the stepfather thing during the course of the show, though.

seriously, what\’s with socially awkward chaebol men and their obsession with cleaning robots in dramas

8

men in dramas are progressive now. The women can’t be cleaning robots ofc – that’s totally backward. But how can the man be the one doing the cleaning? Enter: the cleaning robot! A neat little solution to the problem,

isn’t it PPL.. from gosling to kdramas, all tech products being shown in action 🙂

lol..i’ve been meaning to buy one.. and if i could earn more even driverless car

      3
      1

that is usually my answer to everything i see in a drama.. “must be ppl” but some of these have been adapted off webtoons, which means it was a writerly choice (unless webtoons have ppl too? idk)

i always wonder, if love is all about money!
How we must show chaebol and the big emotional gap that a woman will fill.

In reality, a rich guy is a pampered guy. Rich women are exquisitely b’ful too. Rich guy can fall in love with a rich woman. if he is handsome, he is used to women falling for him and probably will be a playboy or experience. He has brain, so in all probability he understands society, humans and has his own point of view on every person he meets. He has lived a good life so probably is an happy person !!! 🙂

    0
    1

i don’t think all rich people are 100% socially functional or even happy. from some people i’ve seen, it’s almost like their basic material needs are met, so rich kids find absurd things to make themselves unhappy with.

rich or poor, everyone has their insecurities and failings, so i am not sure we can come to the conclusion that they understand everything and are happy!

      1
      1

ah!.. i never meant 100%.. but what i mean is that a person does not have to be broken to fall irrevocably in love with someone and neither do all poor girls awesome 🙂

oh man, being on here is making me realise that k drama twitter (as awesome as it is) is nowhere as near active as DB is. *resolves to lurk here more often*

What exactly does kdrama twitter constitute of? I haven’t really seen much hype there. Are there any good accounts/people to follow? DB is a really active place for drama followers.

i had mostly followed beanies’ twitter accounts (there was the mistake cause if they’re on db… they’re posting all the drama content, well, here) and a few accounts that post random screencaps haha
