Binge-watched the episodes of Pretty Noona so far and OMG! I can\’t stop smiling!! I haven\’t been a big fan of noona romances somehow but as I find my self entering the noona domain Ive changed my mind
Whenever a drama shows us the fluff in the beginning itself, I’m terrified about whether they’ll bombard us with all the sad stuff in the next half. If they did that here,,,, nooooo,,,,,,
I unconsciously started by just picking up words I’d hear often in kdramas and variety and a year later, I consciously found myself understanding some sentences and correcting subs in my head. Then I went on to learn Hangul and let’s just say, I haven’t particularly improved since then. Life got in the way😊 but I can watch a raw episode and get the gist of it but I’d have gaping holes in understanding. Ironically, I still can’t form sentences cause I never really learnt how to… only repeat what I’ve heard like a parrot. And I can read now even though it takes a while and I don’t understand what I’m reading most times.
Quite similar for me too! I picked up korean from watching dramas, listening to kpop, plus hangul from a korean app. Alot of the motivation came from trying to understand raw previews and videos (cos girl has little patience for subs)
– Chinese is my mother tongue and I’ve taken jap lessons, so it helps in vocab, understanding sentence structure and how honorifics work.
– My vocab is very drama centric eg, i miss you, my heart is broken, don’t leave me. Lol.
– Cannot form sentences at all and I can’t really tell the tenses very well, eg i know its something about eating, but don’t know whether its have eaten, am eating or able to eat.
– When i went to korea for a holiday, it was fun to converse with the locals! It was only bits and pieces with frantic sign language but they are generally friendly and very willing to try and understand a foreigner. Also, google translate’s camera function saved my life 🙆🏻♀️
Tenses… basically my grammar structure is non-existent. I, too, can’t always differentiate between tenses. You went to Korea? That must have been nice. I’m riddling with jealousy. I just want to travel.. at this point to anywhere outside my country.
Hahah, my vocabulary is very drama-centric too. I’ve even had an idea for a story based on how so many of us who know bits of Korean know it through this “oppa saranghae” lens.
I bought books during he height of my kdrama addiction, so I can learn how to read their sentences. I read them for a few weeks, and have been stuck at that phase since. I would like to learn more, but it sometimes much quicker to turn the cc. subtitles on.
AHAHA! Here are my resources:
I started with Coursera.
TO ANYONE THAT DOESN’T KNOW: Coursera has HUNDREDS of classes on countless subjects from universities from around the world (yes, world) for FREE. You can pay if you want certification. But if you’re learning for the sake of learning, you can just audit the class, ANY CLASS. If you can’t figure out how to do that, I can help – just let me know.
Now going on about learning Korean. Coursera has two classes from Yonsei University. Start with
Thank you! I have been learning on/off for about a year on Memrise but I did check out the coursera course and it was helpful in learning the exact pronunciation of some syllables. TTIMK is such a great resource – someone made a Memrise course from all their lessons, so it’s in a handy format too.
Well, I’ve been watching Korean dramas for years now, but I only picked up words here and there..
It was when I got into BTS that I wanted to learn in earnest, because I wanted to sing the songs properly, with good pronunciation and actually understand what they’re saying.. Watching dramas without subs is a lovely bonus! So I picked up several apps, books, and sites and learned Hangul, and now am very slowly learning grammar.
That’s nice! I have memorised a bunch of words with the help of an app, but stuck with grammar, and unsure how to go about it in a way that makes sense and is not *too* much work lol.
I fell in love with the language when I first started knowing kdramas and jdoramas, and that was almost 10 years ago. (Wow, saying the years out loud made me realize that I must have been one of the ancient fans in here). Learnt the hangul on my own and now can pretty much watch shows without subtitles (can understand pretty much of what’s happening, but if the dialogues get too long or too technical then the translation is lost on me. Haha).
Never learnt the language properly, as in the grammar or the sentences structures but from what I know, their sentences structures are different from english and that makes it difficult to learn. I’ve learnt Japanese and Mandarin also and I have to say that Korean is indeed the easiest to learn in terms of the words (or maybe I’m saying this because I have 10 years of korean drama watching experience so my vocab is quite wide), Mandarin is superrr hard because you literally have to memorise each characters and different tones of reading will have different meanings (this drive me crazy all the time), and Japanese is still, my most beloved language.
I travelled to Japan alone 3 years back and can survive with my basic Japanese, and similarly in South Korea last year, where people will try their best to help you (despite not in english), but I can pretty much understand their instructions and found my way..
So if you’re learning Korean but not formally, don’t worry. Time will make up for it😊
Whoa! You’ve learnt the holy trio of languages (at least for me)! Did you learn Mandarin and Japanese on your own? Also, why did you decide to learn all three?
I first started learning Japanese but then it got difficult, and I ended up dropping it, and then I thought I’d learn Mandarin (thought it might increase my job prospects), but like you said, it got super difficult. Finally Korean was one I stuck with and which seemed easy because the sentence structure is the same in my mother tongue.
I have just started learning Japanese again and hope to travel there one day too! How was your solo trip experience? I have never traveled solo and I fear Japan might be a difficult destination for a first time solo trip.
Me! Although it was getting into kpop (about 6 months after I got into kdramas) that really got me started learning.
I can read hangul (I know how to pronounce the words) but I still can’t understand most of it. I’m understanding more and more when I watch dramas but I still probably only understand around 5% of a drama without subs 😭 I want to be up to 80 or 90% comprehension without subs by the end of the year 🙂
I’m sure you will get there soon! I am at the level where I can understand 40% without subs but yes, hope to reach 80 by the end of the year too! I feel like a group for Korean learners from DB would be good. 😕
Thanks! That’s awesome that you can understand 40% without subs.
If you ever want to practice or talk about what you’re learning, you could post on my daily Korean practice post 🙂
In my much younger days I took classes in both Chinese & Japanese. Fun at the time, but now seriously studying languages is too much like homework and I just don’t want do to it even now that I have time.
I’ve done a little reading about the language, grammar, etc., and I can’t help picking up a few words but I’m 99% content to depend on subs. Spending time studying is soooo 50 years ago.
But it’s fun noticing all the loan words from English and Chinese, plus some words that sound similar to Japanese — mostly because they borrowed so many of the same words from Chinese.
Hahahaha @ “Spending time studying is soooo 50 years ago.”
Apps like Memrise and Duolingo almost make learning languages like a game… and so I am continuing to stick with it.
I was watching a Japanese show after a long time and yes, like you said, it was quite fun to see the loan words.

I tried epi 1, honestly I would have continue watching it if they have casted someone else for both female leads. Yoo Shi-yoon was amazing, but I think i might don’t love him enough to con’t watching just for him.
I’m watching it, but I sorta… don’t care about the political whatnot or even Joo Sang Wook’s character’s existence, unfortunately.. I just loathe him and wish he would disappear so I can we Yoon Shi Yoon be happy..
I signed up using the browser, but I also downloaded the app. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough korean to understand what’s going on without the help of Google translate so I’m lost ㅠㅠ
Escaping from life and the truckload of emotional turmoil that comes with being a primary cancer caregiver by diving into….. Father is Strange. My first non mini-series. Wish me luck!
I looked forward all day to coming home, plopping self in front of laptop and watching School 2017 with a little treat – got my self a sugar donut. Ah, the little joys!
For the first time in about six months (since I started watching a lot of dramas), I\’m only following two dramas every week in the current cycle. School 2017 (:DDDD) and Bride of the Water God.
Only now I truly empathise with the sleep or drama memes as anxiety is slowly bubbling up when I think of the episodes I’m yet to watch. Been used to watching each episode as soon as it gets subbed.
And so I decided to postpone getting a haricut (for which I’d planned to leave work early) so that I can go home and catch up on the ever-increasing pile. And I don’t know whether I should be happy or ashamed. 😐
i hope you could rest well, and watching drama’s is good for the soul, mind and heart 🙂
take it one episode at a time to beat anxiety, it’s okay if you don’t watch everything the moment it’s subbed, and don’t let it get in the way of doing the things you need to do , like getting a haircut 🙂 try to go for one tomorrow and then use the kdrama as a reward? 🙂
Thanks! Yeah, the more I stayed away from them, the easier it became. And now when I watch the dramas, I’m more selective about what I want to watch, and I find that I’m enjoying squeeing more 🙂
So… I\’ve been refreshing the sites where I usually watch dramas since morning (it\’s now 7:07 p.m. where I live) confused AF about why there are no new episodes (1/n)
– was looking forward to Bride of the water god and School 2017. To realise only NOW that it’s still Monday and I watch my Monday shows on Tuesday Mornings. ://////////////////////////////////////////////////
This update is great! I can now post my thoughts on dramas and some K pop/indie on here. Been meaning to create a Tumblr only for this, but thanks DB for saving me the trouble!
