You’re Beautiful: Episode 14

Once again, we run the gamut of emotions from light to heavy, which I always find to be a welcome thing when a drama heads to its more serious moments. Yes, some of the conflicts amp up in this episode, but it also has more of its trademark goofy parody sequences to lighten the in-between moments. The threesome parody in this episode is possibly my favorite Hong sisters parody ever.

SONG OF THE DAY

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Tae-kyung is about to tell Mi-nyo something, starting, “Go Mi-nam, I… you…” But then, he’s interrupted by excited fans, who wave excitedly as they arrive in buses.

Tae-kyung is annoyed with the interruption, particularly since Mi-nyeo takes it as her cute to excuse herself. Explaining that she’ll act as though he’s just sending her off, she starts to leave.

He holds her back, saying, “Hear me out first.” Leaning in close, he says, “I like you.”

(Omo!)

Having gotten that out in the open, he lets her go, but now she’s so shocked that she stands in a daze. As the fangirls swarm around him, Mi-nyeo wonders if she heard right. She thinks, “I wish the world would quiet down so I can hear the soft words in my memory.”

She thinks back, confirming that he had indeed said those words, and suddenly the world around her is all roses and butterflies. LITERALLY.

As this finally sinks in, Mi-nyeo starts giggling out loud in glee, exultant. She doesn’t see Tae-kyung sitting in his car a short distance away, who smiles and says, “So she did hear me properly.”

On the plane, Shin-woo looks at the empty seat next to him and tells himself, “I knew she wouldn’t come. But since I told her that I’ve already begun [to have feelings], that’s enough.”

Almost immediately, photos pop up online of Tae-kyung and Mi-nam at the airport. Heyi is annoyed — why would Tae-kyung go to the airport to see Mi-nam? — and displeased. Meanwhile, may I take the moment to point out the HILARITY of the top 3 online star searches, as seen in Heyi’s web browser??

  1. Dong Bang Single
  2. So Nyeo Junior
  3. Super Shidae

Tae-kyung gives Mi-nyeo a ride home. Mi-nyeo wonders how to handle herself around him, given his declaration: “Should I tell him that I heard him and give him permission too?” However, she imagines him issuing a gruff response, and considers trying the opposite instead — she could say she didn’t hear what he said and ask him to repeat it. But she imagines him sneering at that, “You didn’t hear? Then cancel it!”

Mi-nyeo decides to accept his statement gratefully, and figures that she doesn’t need to hear him say it anyway, because “if I hear him say that he likes me again, my heart may burst.”

Tae-kyung breaks the silence by suggesting they grab something to eat, and asks if she likes spaghetti. Mi-nyeo hiccups. Puzzled, he repeats the question, and she hiccups again. Testing out a theory, Tae-kyung enunciates clearly, “Do you LIKE charcoal-grilled kalbi? Do you LIKE naengmyun? What about sushi, do you LIKE it? I LIKE sushi.” She hiccups every time he says the word LIKE.

He prods her to answer (which is his way of getting her to say she likes him back). Mi-nyeo answers, “I really, really like [it] very, very much.”

Sushi lunch. Mi-nyeo takes all the shrimp and crab off his plate because of his allergies, happy to eat them. When Tae-kyung tells her to give him two pieces in exchange for the ones she took, her face falls — she was counting on eating them. So Tae-kyung relents and tells her to eat them all, so as not to lose points. (“Why is it so tough to preserve my score?”)

When Mi-nyeo brings up the issue of photos from the airport being made public, Tae-kyung answers that he’s not very worried. There’s nothing scandalous about him seeing her off, although he is aware that fans often create stories out of nothing. He adds (with a perfectly straight face), “There are a lot of love stories that don’t even feature women.”

He’s talking, yup, about fanfic. (I love it!) In what is my favorite giggly sequence this episode (possible this drama?), he explains, “Most of them are a love triangle between me, Shin-woo, and Jeremy.”

LULZ! Imaginations run wild in his exaggerated examples: two hands cover Fanfic Tae-kyung’s eyes and he asks hopefully, “Shin-woo?” The hands move aside to reveal a hurt Jeremy, who says, “You’re always looking for Shin-woo.” Holding Tae-kyung’s hand to his chest, Fanfic Jeremy says, “You’re inside my heart.”

At that moment, a glass shatters — Fanfic Shin-woo has walked in and seen this intimate moment. Angry at being thus replaced by Jeremy, he vows, “I’m going to destroy you both!”

(OMG. I love that the writers work in details incorporating some of the more ridiculous aspects of idol life. First Sung-chan’s ridiculous English, and now yaoi fanfiction.)

Jeremy logs on to read the latest stories online, getting a kick out of them. He’s waiting at the broadcast station where he is going to make a surprise cameo appearance at the end. He plans to use this as his platform for telling Mi-nam how he feels in the form of a song.

However, his web browsing leads him to the airport photos of Mi-nam and Tae-kyung, which makes him wonder what’s going on. With the question dangling in the air, he can’t concentrate until he confirms the truth with Tae-kyung, and heads out. He only has an hour before he has to make his appearance, and if he doesn’t make it there will be trouble.

Hoon-yi sees Tae-kyung and Mi-nyeo arriving at the agency together, and gapes. Why did Tae-kyung interfere and go to the airport? A little triumphantly, Tae-kyung tells Hoon-yi, “Take a good look.” He whirls Mi-nyeo around and hugs her, prompting her to press her nose. Having proved his point to the manager, he heads off to work.

Hoon-yi can’t believe it — so her pig-nose was because of Tae-kyung? She asks anxiously, “Does he know what that means?” Hoon-yi can’t understand why, of all the people in the world, she’d fall for mean ol’ Tae-kyung. She answers, “At some point, I started to feel electric shocks.”

Jeremy arrives in time to catch the end of this conversation. Staring at Mi-nyeo intently, he asks, “Do you like Tae-kyung hyung?” She’s a little surprised by the blunt question, but nods. Jeremy’s face twists to hear it, and he runs off.

When they learn that Jeremy is still missing from the studio, Hoon-yi and Mi-nyeo try to track him down. They have no luck, but Mi-nyeo remembers the bus and follows her hunch to the bus stop.

She sees Jeremy sitting alone in an empty bus and races after it. She climbs onboard and starts to approach Jeremy, who looks up and glares: “This is my bus. Get off.” Seeing how upset Jeremy is, Mi-nyeo feels horrible as he continues, with wounded confusion:

Jeremy: “When I thought you were a guy, I was okay with it. When I found out you were a girl, I was okay with it. But if you like Tae-kyung hyung, I can’t be okay with it. Why? Why wasn’t it me? I told you about my treasure bus, and I let you close to Jolie, and I was going to sing a song only for you. Why don’t you like me?”

They sit in silence on opposite sides of the bus for a while. Jeremy answers a call from the studio, and agrees to sing his song over the phone instead. He’s chosen a cheerful children’s tune called “Such Good Words.”

As Jeremy introduces his selection, he looks over at Mi-nyeo, directing his words to her: “These good words were so precious to me that I saved them up. If I keep them inside too much, they turn into words I can’t say again. But I hope they’re not disagreeable words, useless words, or words that make you sad.” Knowing he’s talking to her, Mi-nyeo gestures that no, she doesn’t think that.

He starts to sing: “I love you, these words are such good words. When our family goes to bed, they give and receive these words. I love you, these words are such good words. These are words Jeremy wants to give to her.”

When he finishes, she tells him, “They’re very good words.” He answers, “But you can’t accept them. Right, Go Mi-nam?” That’s true, and Mi-nyeo apologizes.

Jeremy tells her frankly, “I can’t say it’s okay right now. When this bus returns to its place, then it’ll become okay.” When the bus rolls to a stop, he tells her, “When I get off this bus, I’m going to return to being the happy Jeremy. Forget everything I said here. If you don’t forget them, I can’t return. Got it, Go Mi-nam?”

True to his word, when he steps off the bus, he puts on a cheery face and talks in his usual energetic way. They head off to eat ice cream together, with only the fleetingest of looks betraying that Jeremy isn’t as happy as he’s acting.

Tae-kyung and his producer meet with a former singer who once knew Go Jae-hyun. The singer explains that Go Jae-hyun was a nice, ordinary guy who had dated Hwa-ran. The relationship fell apart when she went to another man, and afterward he got together with another woman, who was preparing to be a singer herself. Not knowing of Tae-kyung’s personal connection to this story, he insinuates that Hwa-ran had quite a lot of men in her day.

Tae-kyung mutters to himself, “That grand love sounds quite messy when discussed in other people’s words.”

Hwa-ran hates the idea of “that woman’s daughter” and her son being cozy, and decides to do something about it. She presents Mi-nyeo with a gift — a dress — and says meaningfully, “I picked right, didn’t I?”

Hwa-ran assures M-nyeo not to worry — she doesn’t want to mess with her. Mi-nyeo asks Hwa-ran to pretend not to know until her brother returns soon, and that her bandmates are not to blame. Hwa-ran concludes, “They knew and covered for you, and were your friends. You did something very dangerous. It’s complicated to explain to you, but Hwang Tae-kyung and I have a special personal relationship. Be careful not to get involved and make things complicated.”

Mi-nyeo promises, “No matter what happens, I will make sure not to cause trouble for Hwang Tae-kyung. I cannot let him be hurt.” Hwa-ran replies, “From his perspective, it would have been better not getting involved with you.”

Mi-nyeo chalks Hwa-ran’s statements up to being a protective mother, but still, this whole situation makes her uneasy. She can’t let Tae-kyung know that she knows about his relationship with his mother — he was so sad on his birthday that she couldn’t bring herself to say it — but feigning ignorance means she’s caught in the middle: “It feels like I’m lying to him, and it doesn’t feel good.”

I appreciate the way the writers turn the situation from serious to funny in a natural way: After everything that’s happened, Mi-nyeo has had quite a tiring day. However, Tae-kyung doesn’t know this and wonders why she hasn’t called him all day. He concedes, “Well, I did tell her not to inconvenience me, so she must have spent all day waiting.”

To his surprise, she answers the phone in a sleepy voice. Disappointed (and offended), Tae-kyung retorts, “Forget it! Keep sleeping, you sleepyheaded Pig-Rabbit!”

Not satisfied to end things on that note, he calls her out and takes her to the movie theater. When she warns him that she may fall asleep, he insists that he didn’t call her out to watch the movie (i.e., as a date) — he just needs a guide in the dark. He didn’t need HER, he needed her EYES. He orders her onward: “Go Mi-nam’s Eyes, guide me.”

He takes her hand as she leads him inside the darkened theater, but balks at her seating choice and orders her to move. He complains at her next choice, too — but it’s clear to us that he just likes holding her hand and is prolonging the moment.

We can be sure of that because he doesn’t strictly need her hand-holding — at one moment he forgets himself and starts to lead her instead. Surprised, Mi-nyeo asks whether he can see. He clears his throat and says, “Go Mi-nam’s Eyes, eyes can’t talk.”

Afterward, they step out on a deck overlooking the city, and the lights are so bright that she can’t see the stars. Noting that he can’t ever see the stars, she breathes on the glass and draws a star in the mist. Seeing another star — a lamp — she comments, “Even when it’s not a dark night, there are a lot of stars around us. After I stop acting as Go Mi-nam and go far away, I’ll search for stars and think of you.” After her brother returns, it would be better for her to be at a distance.

Tae-kyung answers lightly, “Go looking for those stars. I’ll check up on you to ask how many you’ve found. I’ll be expecting you to see a lot.” She thinks to herself, “But the star I like the best is one I can’t take with me, so I’ll miss it a lot.”

Tae-kyung promises to show her more stars and motions her closer — then holds up his knuckle. If he were to give her a noogie, she should see five more stars.

Mi-nyeo wonders worriedly if he would really do it, and braces herself as he pulls back, winding up for a big one…

…but instead, he swoops in for a kiss.

(I don’t know if there were spoilers for this kiss but if there were I AM SO GLAD I didn’t know about them. Full squealing effect preserved!)

Shin-woo returns from his trip to Busan, and Mi-nyeo feels sorry and uncomfortable around him. He has brought back a gift for her from his mother, because he couldn’t bring himself to tell her the full story. He doesn’t expect Mi-nyeo to accept it, but wanted to show her his mother’s gesture.

The time away seems to have been good for Shin-woo, because he talks with more assertion now. He tells her that he’d been a good hyung to her, but their relationship lacked tension. Now, he intends to add a sense of pressure to her, which sounds bad but means merely that he’s going to take a new direction: “I’ve stepped back until now because I’ve been comforting you. Now I’m going to step forward and comfort myself.”

Planning progresses for Mi-nam’s solo album, and Hoon-yi announces with great excitement that the real Mi-nam is returning the day before the showcase. Jeremy wonders what the real Mi-nam is like, and gets back the answer that Mi-nam may look like his sister but his personality is different: “He has Tae-kyung’s charisma, Shin-woo’s softness, and Jeremy’s brightness.”

Although this should be good news, each member has his own subdued reaction to it.

Hoon-yi is so psyched to have his Mi-nam troubles nearing their end that he lets slip to the stylist that Mi-nyeo and Tae-kyung like each other. The stylist had believed that Heyi and Tae-kyung were dating, so now she tells Heyi that she knows the truth.

Heyi’s reaction to news is sheer shock: “They’re for real?” This pushes her over the edge, and she bursts out, “How can that he set me aside and go for her? I really hate Go Mi-nam!” Shoving items off the counter, she sobs angrily.

Per their half-joking “agreement,” Mi-nyeo shows Tae-kyung pictures of all the stars she found today: a star-shaped shirt pin and a tomato stem, for example.

He teases her for only finding three, so she responds bashfully, “Right now, the star I like the most is with me every day.” Then, afraid she said too much, she points up to the sun as though saying she meant the star in the sky. Not him, of course!

He plays along, “Ahh, that star you said is the coolest. Where is that?” Mi-nyeo doesn’t want to admit the truth, so she says, “You can’t see stars anyway. You don’t have to know.”

Tae-kyung offers to watch her favorite star with her tonight, and they set a date. He wonders if they’ll be able to see any in this weather, but decides, “I don’t need those stars anyway. I’m the star she likes best.”

Sung-chan takes Mi-nyeo to meet the producer, who has finished work on Hwa-ran’s remake song. As she listens to the song playing in the background, knowing this was her father’s work, she decides to tell Tae-kyung about her father tonight.

Spying a star-shaped ashtray, she picks it up as the two men gossip about the songwriter and Hwa-ran having been lovers. Shocked, Mi-nyeo lets the ashtray fall from her grasp, and it shatters on the ground. (Ah, the familiar destruction of a symbolic trinket to foreshadow impending troubles! This has been used in more than one Hong sisters drama before, and is frankly a tactic I could do without.)

Not knowing that Mi-nyeo has broken her star (in a symbolic gesture), Tae-kyung takes out a star-shaped necklace wherein the star is meant to represent him. He plans to give it to her later, and (very adorably) taunts Pig-Rabbit with it, saying, “This isn’t yours.”

Mi-nyeo asks her aunt whether her father was really involved with Hwa-ran. Aunt Mi-ja hadn’t told her “because I thought it would upset you to know your father left your mother for Mo Hwa-ran. You were looking so hard for your mother. If you knew that she’d been abandoned and died alone, you might hate your father.”

Mi-nyeo is devastated and still half-disbelieving, so she decides to confirm the truth. She heads to the hotel, where Hwa-ran’s assistant informs her of Mi-nyeo’s arrival. Deciding to get the truth all out at once, Hwa-ran calls Tae-kyung to summon him too, saying, “It’s someone you know. I want to confirm it before it causes trouble for you. It’s a girl named Go Mi-nyeo.”

Hoping that the information is false, Mi-nyeo asks Hwa-ran to confirm that she and Go Jae-hyun were just friends. Hwa-ran answers, “We weren’t just friends. We loved each so much that we can’t forget each other for the rest of our lives.”

Shocked at his mother’s revelation, Tae-kyung bursts into Mi-nyeo’s room looking for some proof. Spying the photo of the young twins with their father, his eye then falls on the autographed photo of Hwa-ran. Mi-nyeo’s handwritten note wishes him a happy birthday — and although that’s not exactly incriminating, it makes him wonder why she wouldn’t have given it to him on his birthday.

Mi-nyeo isn’t very impressed to hear of Hwa-ran’s grand love, and says, “You abandoned and hurt the person you should have treated as the most precious in the world. I can’t believe when a person like that speaks of love. That’s not love.”

Hwa-ran laughs: “You say the same thing as your mother did. She ignored me and didn’t believe your father would return to me.” Mi-nyeo insists, “My father had no reason to love a person like you.” Hwa-ran holds up the CD as proof — he wrote the song for her, and even her mother acknowledged it.

Hwa-ran: “Do you want to insist it’s not true? My son Tae-kyung may not have understood, but he acknowledged it. That’s why he remade this song. I told you I saw you once as children. If your father hadn’t died early, I could have become your mother. Tae-kyung knows that, too. …But you didn’t tell him you’re Jae-hyun’s daughter, did you? Does he know that you know he’s my son? If you didn’t say that, you must not have told him that I know you’re a girl.”
Mi-nyeo: “I didn’t mean to deceive him.”
Hwa-ran: “Tell him that. See if he believes you.”

Tae-kyung bursts in, half-incredulous and half-reproachful to see Mi-nyeo standing with his mother. Hwa-ran makes things worse by turning Mi-nyeo around to face Tae-kyung, and announcing, “This girl is the daughter of the man I loved. She says she didn’t intend to deceive you.”

Tae-kyung walks out without a word. Seeing Mi-nyeo’s reaction, Hwa-ran asks, “Is the reason you wanted to deny it because of my son?” She tells Mi-nyeo to recognize the truth and give up.

Reporter Kim works on his story about Mi-nyeo and Shin-woo’s relationship, but something is niggling at the back of his mind. Every time Mi-nyeo made an appearance, Mi-nam was absent. It’s the Clark Kent principle, and he puts two and two together.

He tries to confirm this with Heyi, but she no longer wants to be involved with A.N.JELL. To which he responds, “Go Mi-nam and Go Mi-nyeo are the same person, right? Is he a guy, or a girl?”

Working off this assumption, the reporter tells Sung-chan that he wants to delay printing the story until he can interview Mi-nam and Mi-nyeo at the same time. Sung-chan asks Shin-woo to handle this with the twins.

As Shin-woo steps out of his meeting with Sung-chan, he sees Tae-kyung stomping upstairs, with Mi-nyeo following close behind and pleading for him to listen.

Tae-kyung asks when she found out about his mother. Hearing her answer, he says, “So there was a reason that whenever I felt upset about my mother, you showed up.” Has she also been meeting with his mother for a while? He adds, “My mother loved your father so much she abandoned me and wanted to be your mother. Did you hear that?”

Mi-nyeo starts to talk, but he cuts off her explanation: “She said you were close enough that she used to bring you cookies. Do you remember? Try getting along well with her from now on. But don’t involve me.”

She holds his arm and pleads for him to listen. He throws her arm aside, snapping, “Don’t be where I can see you. I don’t want to see you.”

He storms off, leaving Mi-nyeo to crumple to the ground in sobs. But he doesn’t get far, and wipes at his own tears as he listens to Mi-nyeo crying a level below — as Shin-woo watches from across the lobby.

COMMENTS

Half the time, I find Hwa-ran to be such an excessively hateful person that it’s hard to find the truth of her character — is she TOO awful to be a credible villain? The best villains show complexity, and don’t explain their reasons in one-dimensional, simplistic terms like “I loved him that much.”

The other half of the time, I think that there must be more behind her actions and find her fascinating. If you see her as a supremely selfish and weak woman, she’s more intriguing than if you were to write her off as a stock villainness. For instance, take her desire to separate the couple. Initially, she sees Mi-nam as an extension of his/her father and looks upon him approvingly. But then, Hwa-ran sees flashes of Mi-nyeo’s mother in her, and therefore finds the idea of that girl with her son to be abhorrent.

It’s not that she loves Tae-kyung so much to want him to be with a good woman — Tae-kyung is just an extension of herself. She looks at the world through a twisted perspective, like looking through a fisheye lens: she and her love are at the center, and everything else is skewed around to fit the frame, shoved off to the side.

We can’t leave out mention of Lee Hong-ki‘s fabulous bus scene, can we? GREAT SCENE. Like with Jung Yong-hwa yesterday, the beauty of the acting wasn’t in the big, dramatic emotions, but the way both guys found the quiet little beats to twist your heart into a painful knot. He didn’t rage at Mi-nyeo, but asked plaintively why she didn’t like him back when he liked her so much. We know it doesn’t work that way, but Jeremy’s heart has its own straightforward way of working.

The way he sings his song is just killer, because you can’t fake that, folks. You can fake crying to some extent, but cry-singing isn’t something you can reproduce authentically without actually going there, and Lee Hong-ki goes there. Ow.

I have to give mad props to Park Shin-hye for rounding out the bus scene so well even though she hardly said a thing. I love that she respects his pain to give him his space when they sit in silence, and I love the look she gives him to assure him that his song isn’t worthless. I wondered if it was out of character for Mi-nyeo to understand so readily that Jeremy liked her — when she was so dense with Shin-woo and Tae-kyung — but I suppose Jeremy was the most straightforward in saying, straight-out, that he liked her.

Criticisms:

The Hong sisters do comedy and angst very well, and manage to mix the two so that most of the time the drama doesn’t get too sunk down in the melodrama. However, I think in every one of their dramas except (surprisingly?) Fantasy Couple, their Big Misunderstanding has been just a wee bit too much for my tastes. Hong Gil Dong wasn’t so bad, but I recall that at the time, the Big Misunderstanding in My Girl closely echoed the setup of Delightful Girl Chun-hyang, and that was a complaint for some fans of My Girl. Instead of feeling like a natural development in the couple’s romance, it felt like it was forced conflict, and it didn’t quite ring true. But I’m sure the Hong sisters took complaints to heart, because when people assumed they’d use a similar structure in Fantasy Couple, they announced that they wouldn’t. Thankfully, that drama avoided a time leap, and I hope this one does too.

To take a look at this episode in a critical light, I’d say we’re dealing more with forced conflict than natural development. Tae-kyung’s response at the end is probably understandable given the context, and I think he’s right in feeling hurt. But he’s overreacting, and his negative opinion of Mi-nyeo is one that would take five minutes of explanation to dispel. All he has to do is calm down and hear how she came to find out the truth, and I think we’d be good. She was wrong in hiding the truth from him, but even so, honestly this is hardly a big enough offense to rend asunder a Love That Is Meant To BeKDRAMA.

To play devil’s advocate, we can also take an apologist standpoint. Tae-kyung has put Mi-nyeo on something of a pedestal, since she has been so good and so forgiving this whole series long. Hearing that Mi-nyeo actively deceived him must shake his entire faith in her. It doesn’t help that it was his hated mother who uttered a defense of Mi-nyeo (“She didn’t mean to deceive you”). Coming from those lips, it sounds like an excuse rather than the truth. And worst of all, his mother issues are his blind spot, so he reacts to the emotion rather than sorting out the facts. It may be that Mi-nyeo meant well, but he sees her standing with the mother who abandoned him, who all but declared she’d rather have raised Mi-nyeo than Tae-kyung. To know that Mi-nyeo knew the truth and was still able to treat his mother civilly, well, that feels like a betrayal. Almost like she chose his mother over him.

It’s not expressly logical, but such is the heat of the moment. (Honestly, I don’t entirely buy the apologist argument, but I thought I’d put it out there.)

Tinkerbell Jeremy

My heart goes out to Jeremy on the bus- he's just so real and honest and so wonderful a guy...

JB I'm so with you on the crying and singing- I would say that Hongki's acting really is a cornerstone of this episode.

And the last straw for me was when he asks PSH to forget everything he said- so Happy Jeremy can come back. It's Tinkerbell-Jeremy, so close to dying who needs PSH, and the audience, to believe in fairies and all-things-good so that he can come back to life.

Clap if you believe!

(Believe you me, I'm clapping....)

hongki's singing was really sad.. i think he managed to pull it off because most of FT island's songs are sad. He carried the sadness in those songs well too,so it's a natural thing for him. i love FT island!! my favourites are Girl's Don't Know and After Love, from their 2nd album,Colorful Sensibility. listen to it and you'd know the sadness that he portrays from the songs..

i dun think Tae Kyung will be mad with her..maybe in that brief moment, but i dun think he'd drag it out. one thing i noticed about this drama is that the ending of an episode always has a "big shocker" or "climax value" to it. but as soon as the next episode starts,it doesnt drag throughout... so i'm crossing fingers on that.. =)

I have always loved Jang Geun Suk's Tae-Kyung. Not just because he's soooo hot (hehehe). But because he's done an awesome acting job in YAB. I guess its safe to say he's living up to the potential he showed in Hwang Jini.

But in this episode, Lee Hong Ki's Jeremy moved me to tears. Even Shinwoo, great as he was in Epi 13 could not do that. (Of course it has happened numerous times with TaeKyung and Mi-nam/Min-yeo).

We have seen Jeremy wacky, a bit weird and over the top. Now he presents us with his vulnerable side in an awesome, awesome way. Wow, was Lee Hong Ki always this good an actor? I didnt think he could do a dramatic turn this convincingly.

I really love k-pop as much as i love its dramas. But I have never been an FT Island or Lee Hong Ki fan.... until this episode. In the future, when I look back at YAB and think about Jeremy, i think i will always remember the "bus scene".

Watched it. Ahhhh...Jeremy!! I cried. Hong-ki has been great all along, over-the-top in a believable way, so this didn't seem like it was too dramatic at all. He's really great. I LIKE you Jeremy. XD Golly, he's SO lovable it's hard to bear. My heart really broke for him.

Regarding Tae-kyung's mother and TK's own overreaction. I get it. I also know (pretty sure, anyway) that Mi-nam's father *didn't* write the song for Hwa Ran, but for Mi-nam's mother. Because of her pride and skewed perspective, Hwa Ran couldn't and can't accept that. Did you see how defensively Hwa Ran answered Mi-nyeo when she claimed she couldn't believe in their love? "Here's the proof! Everyone accepts it! Even Tae-kyung accepted it!" The lady doth protest too much...She's re-making history to fit around her own ego.

Someone probably mentioned that already, but I've skipped ahead. The dilemma of a one-sided love makes the prideful and petty Hwa Ran less plain awful and more motivated-to-be-awful.

I also understand why Tae-kyung's overreacting. It took him a long time to open up his heart, without guidance or point of reference that most people get from a mother figure. He was denied love from the source of it, and that kind of deep, original betrayal makes it difficult to trust anyone, much less be willing to listen with an open mind. Plus, it does look suspicious, anyway, but especially through the lens of mistrust, fear, and anger that Tae-kyung has. Hard to explain a knee-jerk reaction, but I'd be running away from Mi-nyeo right now, too.

"As for their great love, I’ve also wondered if it existed only in her eyes. It would be a terrible shock to her if she discovers that her great love was only a fantasy. For which, she’s spent and lived her life."

@81, Auntie Mame~~Aha! I just knew it had to be mentioned somewhere in those 100+ comments. ^_^ I totally agree with you.

And with everyone with understands Tae-kyung.

I hate it when Hongki cries. It so darn heartbreaking. Once, at a concert he was singing "Saranghajimayo" and throughout the song, you could hear him sobbing, in the chorus you could see the tears flowing and in the end, it seem like he broke. I think that kid must've had something real bad happen to him before. Jeremy bus scene is just full of win. I love the little face he made when getting off the bus. Gosh, Jeremy. I wish they kept more of Jeremy scenes in, he is such a layered character.

I'm convinced that Hwo-Ran is a bit loopy, all that alcohol consumption, seriously. I think she's tryiing to convince herself about JaeHyun's love for her. I am also really curious about MiNam's real mother and who she was and what she was like.

Which reminds me, YAY REAL GO MI NAM, I actually screamed when he came up. I think Shin Hye portrays him well (from the like 5 secs I've seen him), he looks totally kick ass. I like love him already. But he seems like the total opposite from our little innocent Minyeo.

Anyway about TaeKyung, I can see where all his hate for Minyeo is coming from. He is seriously touchy when it comes to his Madre. The last shoot of those 3 in the same building was stunning. I love/hate how TaeKyung can hear Minyeo crying. Shin Hye and Geun Seuk, you both are seriously most awesome.

Other than the angst in the episode, it was so darn cute.
Their little date, I squealed like crazy. And the whole star things with the polariods was seriously awesome. I want to do that.
“I don’t need those stars anyway. I’m the star she likes best.” <3
The manager and stylist in the noraebang were so hilarious and the fanfic thing, LOL. I just hope the ending is satisfactory. I really hope it is for this a fantastic drama. But I've already decided I am purchasing this on la DVD.
Pig chase scene!!! :)

-P.S I love reading your recaps, they pretty much complete my week.
Saranghajimayo means Don't Love btw.

I think TK's mother has some kind of psychic disorders. I doubt that the song hasn't been written for her and she utterly knows! But she's too jealous to accept it even after many years. As soon as she felt the chemistry between His son and MN, she played her dangerous role to mess it up.She intend to revenge MN's mother by letting MN down.

"But he’s overreacting, and his negative opinion of Mi-nyeo is one that would take five minutes of explanation to dispel. All he has to do is calm down and hear how she came to find out the truth, and I think we’d be good."

when has TK ever have a cool head? he's always overreacting and later we'll see glimpses of regrets on his face.. 1st example i could think of was when MN was trying to apologize to him way back in ep2 for puking in his mouth... ( i still cracked up whenever i remember that.... :) ) he blew his top and later seem to regret his words.
anyways, for all we know the beginning of ep15 will probably have him calmed down enough to look for MN again... and in their timeline it probably will be like 5mins after the end of ep14.. ;)

my 2cents:

1. TK to GMN "i like you" - whoaaaa! i like GMN's startled look
2. surprise KISS, what!?! ohhh that was just a squealing worthy moment
3. jeremy - aww, it was as heart aching as SW's scenes the episode prior
4. i felt sad for GMN in the few scenes. i think GMN just takes a while to process things and she wasn't able to speak up right away.. but of course TK doesn't wait. although i must say that it was probably sad for TK when he was hiding at the top of the stairs listening to GMN cry

i can't wait for the last 2 episodes!!

Thank you JB for another awesome recap :)

Two weeks ago I was only concern that this drama is only up 16 episodes. Since I was having so much fun with this drama I need it to last longer. I was worried what the YB withdrawal would do to me. How am I supposed to cope up with the loss. However, after I watched ep14 I am now more worried with how YB would wrap up the ending. Personally, I don't really mind if throughout the drama there's been some flaws what really matters to me is the ending.

Just my two cents worth:

Jeremy's bus scene was great of course, but it didn't have the impact on me. I was literally "huh-ing" away when Jeremy started crying and all after he found out that Minam likes Tae Kyung.

You don't see much development of his love for Minam in this series, it mainly focuses on TK-MN and SW-MN, so it is kind of strange when Jeremy suddenly gets all upset. It is like, hmm when did Jeremy fall in love with Minam, like SERIOUSLY fall in love?

But nevertheless, Jeremy is just too cute already! I'm sure all his fangirls won't bear to watch the heartbroken Jeremy tearing on the bus!

As for Tae Kyung and Minam,

Urghh, typical Korean Drama plot: Something ALWAYS happens after the lead couples finally get together! But it's alright, they have to go through some hardship and obstacles together to make the love bond stronger. But ARGH, I can't stand seeing both of them heartbroken!

Both of them are deprived of parental love, hope all these misunderstandings would stop, and they would get together and give each other all their love! This sounds really cheesy, but seriously, they are just meant for each other!

And I agree with what someone mentioned above, Tae Kyung is a pretty hot-headed person, I'm sure after he calms down, he will believe in Minam.

As for Mo Hwa Ran, continue to let her live in her own self-delusions. This kind of woman is just annoying.

Oh and is it just me, the real Go Minam looks kind of hot, YES and of course I do know that its Park Shin Hye. Haha, but the short-hair-swing-on-the-chair-cool-looking real Go Mi Nam is like.. wow!

OK, here's my 2 cents worth on how I think this is going to pan out.

Firstly, I'm most excited about the real GMN's return! According to Ma Hoon Yi, he's the opposite of MiNyeo, so I'm taking it he's no pushover. I think he would resolve the crisis of having an interview with reporter Kim. Maybe when MiNyeo is ready to fess' up to the deceit, he enters thre room.. dun! dun! dun! Tada, ladies and gentlemen... I present you: the twins! He should also be central to righting all the wrongs the MiNyeo has had to endure.

I think the eventual truth with MHR is that Senior Go died regreting what he did to his wife. I think he realised at the end that wifey was "the one" and he wrote that song for her rather than MHR. (i'm not opposed to the Hong sisters adding in a flashback parody a la Fatal Attraction and the boiling bunny involving MHR ;p). It would be unusual for a kdrama to allow a villian like MHR to be the receipient of such love. The real GMN might be privy to the truth behind this story and woud have a hand in revealing it. Hopefully, when the curtains are lifted on the truth MHR would spontaneously combust which shouldn't be too difficult considering the amount of flammables she consumes.

MiNyeo would probably leave when the real GMN reappears. I think this would be before the conflict with TK is resolved and after he's thought things through and finds out that MHR actually indirectly killed her mom he would go after her but he won't know where to find her. HY comes into play here because she still has that big secret that MiNyeo is going to devote herself to her religion to go join an order. She would probably be the one to disclose this to TK and he would go looking for MiNyeo. And then they live happily ever after. The End.

I wonder... If there is more to the love between MN's dad and TK's mom... From the conversation between MN and Hwaran.. I seemed to me that that HR"s love for mi nam's father might be unreciprocated love. When Mi nyeo questioned her if the love is a lie, hwa ran's reply sounded very defensive, that everyone believed, and Mi nyeo should give up and acknowledge it too, without the need of understanding like how TK did.

It sounds to me, it might be MN's dad loved her mom deeply, and HR is a third party that wanted to come in between MN's parents. And may had indirectly caused the deaths of MN's parents. Aye? Like what you've said, I believe there is more to the character Hwaran... She sounds very twisted. I'm hoping that the assistant or someone would come forward and provide a more dependable source of info for that "romance" that she claimed. lol...

AND! you did not mention that short screen time of the real mi nam!! Hahaha! That made me so intrigued, and now i'm super anticipating for Park shin hye to appear as a real guy! Mi nyeo really needs her oppa to come forward and protect her from all these stuff!

Hong Ki really won me over with that bus scene, I hope to see him in other dramas in the future! He can definitely be more than just the cute funny guy.

But ohmigosh I'm excited to see Mi Nam! I wonder how PSH will pull that off.

Oh, and about hwa ran's song...in an earlier episode she said something like "if I remake this song it'll really be mine"
She definitely knows that song wasn't written for her. And so do we.

Jeremy's outburst was so heartbreaking...and I think it's believable because that's just how he is. He's so dense he didn't realise the tension between his hyungs and Minam, and maybe he thought it was obvious that he liked Minam. After all, he shared secrets with her and kissed her when he found out she was a girl... Since she didn't refuse, he probably thought she reciprocated or at least that he had a chance. Having all those hopes dashed must have been crushing for him. Remember, his love journey with Minam has been pretty long. On a side note, Jeremy killed me in the bus, but so did Minam! She does wonders with those wordless looks, just like JGS and his cute little smirks.

From the twelve seconds I saw of him, the real MN looks like someone I'd crush on :D TK's a bit of a badass, but from that glimpse of real MN, looks like he's ten times worse! Wish we could see more of him, he really appeared way too late. And was I the only one who felt sorry for HY when she had her outburst? Plus she's finally given up and I don't think she ratted them out. Poor girl.

I thought in an earlier episode it was made clear that the song WASN'T made for MHR, it was for MN's mother. I'm pretty sure it was. Either way, I doubt it'll stand in Taenyu's way for long...I'm so sad the drama's ending. ;_; I'd actually prefer a different drama with the same cast rather than YB 2 though, because second seasons of a one-season story generally aren't too great. Though if it means I get to see more of the cast...hmm.

jb do you answer questions?

does the hong sisters have in their repertoire the pulling of pig-rabbits out of a hat?

-like how someone could have proof that the song "what should i do" could have been written for GMN's ma but MHR stole and sang it herself, being a "big" star and she was just obssessed with GMN's pa because when she stole the song that "killed" his wife GMN's pa would no longer take her back?

-how do they insert the japan part of the story?

-i have this sadistic streak of seeing YHY being a love slave of the real GMN.

-it wouldn't sound right to marry them off that young right? so how do you set off an ending that would warrant a second season if that rumor were to materialize?

what's your batting percentage of getting the ending of stories right?

whatever! YB is just a treat, so with your recaps. thank you!!!

p.s. anybody knows the latest ratings?

I want to cry too at the end of this episode after seeing MN and TK both crying. TK must have felt betrayed by his most loved women - MN and his mom. TK is actually a boy who needs a lot of love since he lacked the love he wanted so much during his childhood. I can feel his anger and disappointment. I don't think that he has overreacted.

One thing that I don't understand is that why all Korean dramas has a evil woman character. She would do all the bad things in order to make the people around her suffered. Just feel terrible about this. And how can you treat your son like this? I feel awful for TK.

I do have one complaint about this episode. The kiss scene in this episode is as awkward as the one in last week. How can you freeze in the same position for so long in one kiss? The director should make it more romantic and sweet like a real one. The kiss scene of JGS and PSH's Etude advertisment was better as compared to this one.

I still enjoy this episode very much despite of this little complaint. Really look forward to the last 2 episodes. Maybe the real MN will stand up against TK's mom and help TK and his sister to overcome their problem. Must be a happy ending!

I'm beginning to suspect that something BIG is up when the real GMN is 'incommunicado' with his twin sis throughout the series, even when we are all under the impression that they were really close. Has he been doing his own legwork about their parents' past since he left his sis for Seoul? Had he been able to find out everything that has happened between their parents and TK's mom and figured out the TK-MHR connection before he flew to the US?

The twins may have gone through the same harsh experiences while growing up being orphans and all, but I'm sure big brother chokes it all down differently than lil' twin sister does. It seems to me that Jemma is likely to be more resilient and self-accepting than the real GMN. It would be interesting to see how credibly PSH will portray Jemma's brother.

@147, I am really sad too that they have to edit so many cute scenes from this drama. I really don't want to miss anything from this drama, not even a second scene. *sigh* if i had a magic wand than i would have rise the Rating of this drama so high that sbs will surely extend the episode.
Any way, somewhere i kinda don't want next week to come fast, i don't want 'YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL' to end.
@ pig rabbit, thank you so much for the information. I hope this announcement is true. And will YAB season 2 will have the same casts? I wish the season 2 will have the same casts again.

I have a feeling that the real Mi-Nam will come back and that Mi-Nyeo will keep her promise to be at a distance from Tae-Kyung and the band. And that there will be regret + chasing scene from Tae Kyung and that they will somehow make up and give us a happy ending.

Anyway,I melted at this episode! TK's cheeky trick reminded me so much of my boyfriend's!

@ 80 Nom_Kitteh : I agree, I can completely understand that TK feels betrayed by MN. It doesn't make me like his reaction, but it feels in character. Instant understanding and calm detective work to figure out what was really going on would have been out of character.

We know he flares up and almost right away feels remorseful (someone else mentioned the scene in the bathroom when he says why didn't she let me calm down?), so what will be problematic is if he doesn't almost immediately try to rectify the hurtful consequences of his angry reaction.

Jeremy's bus scene practically stole the show in this episode. It is the only scene so far in the entire 14 episodes which got me crying! Man, can Hong-ki act!

Back to the story, I really like the way this episode went from light-hearted happiness to "doomsday" in just one hour. Honestly, TK's confession this time is way better and sweeter than the one in episode 13. And the yaoi fanfic completely caught me off guard. Even though it was shown in the preview, but I did not expect it to turn out this way! It was so ridiculously funny and true at the same time! I can't imagine how JGS manage to have such a straight face while explaining to MiNam about fanfic in the restaurant. And Jeremy reading (and liking) those fanfics is just too cute. I admit to reading them myself =)

Really can't wait for MHR to get punched in the face. Or at least disappear to some place where she can't hurt out favourite couple anymore!

..8s nice to know that they didn't just skim over his feeling over go mi nam or his character on the series...not unlike what they did to the 4th guy on BOF (not sure about his name)...

Thanks JB for posting the "Goodbye" OST. I love this song so much.

Can you post JGS' version of "Without Word"? It sounds even better than the original one sang by 9th street. JGS may not be as smooth and skillful as a professional singer. But his voice is really touching. He can show his emotion through his song as well.

Completely fallen in love with JGS' voice and songs.

I just watched Ep 14 this morning and haven't had the chance to read all the comments.

The ending of this Ep was a killer. I cried with MN as she dropped to the ground and broke into tears. Though I wish TK did not react that way. I can understand where he's coming from. Just like JB explained with the apologist view. He feels betrayed and when it comes to his mum, he is simply blind - like his night blindness, no matter how hard he may try to see through the darkness, he can't.

I hope, SW will be a big enough man and resolve the situation instead of seeing this as an opportunity for him to sweep MN away.

The other sad scene with Jeremy and the bus also made me cry. LHK's acting has been consistent and great the whole drama. It's true as others have pointed out that he's not given enough credit.

I am a little anxious about the real MN but I know he has to return: i) to resolve the reporter's upcoming scandalous revelation, ii) so that MNyeo can be with TK for real and most of all, I think iii) to resolve the MHR issue. I hope he has had enough time to find out more about his parents while in the hospital.

I, like MN, cannot believe MHR can have such deep love. I think she is a twisted, very sad individual who is living in a fantasy. I don't belive GJH wrote the song for her. She made him write a song and he did. She wants to believe the words of the song is meant for her. When she left GJH for TK's dad, he fell in love with MN's mum. MHR must have done something terrible to separate MN's parents 0 more deception and lies maybe. GJH cannot have left MN's mum for MHR in his own accord or MN's mum wouldn't have been so adamant. I wouldn't be surprised if the song was actually written for MN's mum. I don't think we've heard the whole truth.

I really enjoyed the sweet, cute moments between TK and MN. It was funny she still did the pig-rabbit thing when he already knew what it meant. And it's cute she still tries to hide that TK is the star she likes best yet he already knows it. And I love how he keeps pig-rabbit next to him and talks to it, as if he needs MN next to him always. I love that the Hong sisters kept TK and MN's personality consistent.

With two more episodes left, it does seem like there are quite some unresolved issues that has to be crammed in but with the pace of the drama so far, I guess the Hong sisters can make it happen. I just hope we get more MNyeo/TK sweet moments before it actually ends. I wish they would surprise us with one special episode with the band in Japan performing and everyone's happy.

I'm a bit sick of the star symbol... (in a small voice)

There! I've given my honest critical opinion, at the risk of being shot by fans. I'm a fan too! I am! Those who have witnessed my descent into ANJELL obsession on the weekly episode discussions can stand firmly on the court stand to vouch on my behalf!!!

But...

I really found myself getting a bit bored. And at the point where the star-shaped cigarette glass case shattered, I had to resist rolling my eyes!

Ok there were still some star-centered moments that were serious explosions of creative script writing --> Punch-induced-stars or Kiss-induced stars anyone? =D Totally squealed like Javabeans too!!!!!!!!!!

But really, like the star necklace gift, isn't that quite cheesy for GeunSeok? Just cuz he's admitted he's in love now, he's become the typical guy? *SIGH* I liked the man who went a round-about way to express his feelings by performing surgery on soft toys. Also, did anyone else feel that the scene at the balcony after the movie-date was a bit slow as well? We've heard the fact that Geun Seok cannot see stars at night nearly 5 times already? And AGAIN somewhere else in the episode, he buys a telescope?!

Javabeans, I'm also glad that I wasn't the only one fidgetting when it became clear that the mom-will-break-them-up plotline was becoming clear after Fake Fairy disappears from the sight of angels. Although this plot line definitely has been building up, but it also feels a bit tiring now to introduce this conflict so soon. I think there's a lot more cute fun and bizarre moments to play out now that Geun Seok has finally expressed his feelings. And although I understand that it's important to have tension in the story but I found it difficult to indulge in squealy joy over their newly established relationship, since Mo Hwa Ran kept INTRUDING onto the screen in varied poses of herself getting drunk and looking at photos while plotting evil thoughts. It's irritating!

Ok to intercede my criticisms with some staunch expressions of my continuing love for the drama. There were like a MILLION things that I still loved in this episode. I mean, the whole confession scene between Geun Seok and Mi Nam, wah I could watch it over and over again!!! I think the Hong Sisters have really taken drama creative writing to a whole new level and we won't see anything this refreshing in YEARS to come. Yes... prepare yourselves for withdrawal folks!!! I guess that's why I just expect a lot more from the script writers. But then with scenes like YAOI fanfictions thrown into a drama, these are definitely writers you can depend on :p THEY ARE TOTALLY IN TOUCH WITH THE WORLD OF FANS MAN

Brilliant recap as always!! I just love Jeremy . . . his scene was so touching and sad. And as a fanfic writer/reader myself (though I don't do yaoi) I found the love triangle sequence HYSTERICAL. Especially Shin Woo's reaction!

I'm a bit surprised though, that you didn't mention the scene where we get a glimpse of the REAL Mi Nam . . . I've been waiting for his introduction since the very beginning. And sure, we only got to see him for a second, but just in that brief moment, I felt like I was really looking at a guy... impressive, considering Park Shin Hye will have to completely reinvent herself to play that character as well. I can't wait for him go back to Korea!! Things are about to get even more interesting. ^_^

@195 - yaoi fanfic?

Fanfic based on relationships between male characters - as opposed to yuri - which would be between female characters.

Known in the US as varieties of slash fanfic.
So named from the early days of the Usenet StarTrek forums had topics on the Kirk/Spock relationship.

You can now use brain bleach if this is TMI for you. See, this is what I get for being an old computer geek ahjumma. One of the few questions asked around here I know the answer to, and it's on / fanfic!

@199

I didn't know the slash fanfic originated from Kirk/Spock days! Wow... and to think I consider myself a Trekkie... though I was more into the First generation novels... ok, sorry OT! ;)

One more sweet thing about TK/MN

Okay I'm not usually the type of girl who loves it when a guy declares how his new girlfriend should be grateful he's going out with her
"It would be appropriate for her to be celebrating all night like it was National day- sleeping?!"

But, the trick is TK's mouth is never where his heart is!

We already know that old softie, so I forgive you and also love it that you miss MN so much that day, but your pride wouldn't let you say so, that you have to make excuses to have her hold her hand and even clung to it while falling asleep at the movie.

Awwww..... sweetie-pie! :)
