Just wondering...this is the first time I've listened to a DB podcast...

Who's GF and who's JB? On this podcast..

After playing the sad run, who's the one that said...

" I love this show so much!"

and who said " It's not perfect show by any means"...

If you listen to Part 1, we intro ourselves in the beginning. I'm the one who speaks first. Or, basically, I'm the one who sounds drunk. ;)

Yes, you did introduce yourselves. But after a few moments, I couldn't distinguish who's JB and who's GF. You sounded the same, sober, tipsy, and drunk. At least to me.

This is really interesting, since I have also ceased to distinguish between your writing styles. I normally do not look at the writer of the post/recap but from time to time I'd go "Wait...is this JB or GF?" Then I'd check. Earlier, I could easily tell, but lately no.

Seems like you two are blending into this one awesome goddess of DB.

*Bow* to your AWESOMENESS, singly and melded and whatever.

oh it's probably because both JB and GF love City Hunter so much that the way they write their recaps so similarly shows their likeness of the show...

I for one as well cannot even recognized whether it's a JB or GF recap especially if it's a CH recap...They're so totally fond of gushing about CH which I'm totally not complaining of...:)

@smashingalou dearest!! ;)

our hosts have distinctively-lovely voices that i could distinguish between them very easily...

Javabeans' voice has a lighter, slightly nasal and lilting feel to it... ;)

Girlfriday's voice has a lower, deeper, expansive feel to it... ;)

i don't know if my descriptions make any sense...hehehe

but what i do know is this -
they have the perfect voices for radio -
attractively-uplifting, richly-expressive and emotive and the intonations, inflections and nuances in their pronounciations are just so appealing and just pull the listeners in so effortlessly... ;)

I've noticed reading your posts after listening to these installments that your voices are much more in my head as I read your words. (Wish English had a better form for plural "you".)

story of a man was genius. city hunter.. not so much.

nana needs to die if you guys want a season 2. :'/ and by die, i mean DIE DIE.

jj abrams botched lost. shudders.* buffy, i liked. angel, i loved.. for the reasons you guys spoke of. angel and crew started low and worked their way to an epic send off with a little bit of humor and heart attached. that's something i can get down with.

for all those american series you guys have seen, i'm surprised city hunter is that awesome for you guys.

if i hadn't seen prison break, MAYBE i could let city hunter's flaws go, but now, i just can't. hah. plus, i love lee minho, but park minyoung is so meh. nana's character is probably awesome on paper, so if they had casted a girl who could deliver, i'm sure i would've like city hunter a little more.

Crazedlu, I agree. I love that you brought up Prison Break, which I think is really different from CH, but still awesome nonetheless (especially seasons 1 and 2).

But anyways, back to City Hunter... It's pretty decent, sometimes even good, but if you compare it to the American shows you girls mentioned... I don't think it holds a candle (in my humble opinion of course). I do agree that the directing elevates it though. I honestly think that's the best thing about this drama.

And unpopular opinion time... While I find Lee Min Ho cute, he's not hot/sexy/charismatic to me, and I don't have this primal reaction towards him (which a lot of girls seem to have) even after 16 episodes. I think it's just a matter of taste/preference, and attraction can't be forced.

0

Required fields are marked *

@ crazelu....

I just wanted to point out that it's easier to create a flawless show with a big budget and 3 to 6 months lead in.

Kdramas seem to have smaller budgets, with a tight schedule... 1 to 2 months lead, then 3/4ths of the way they are working on "live" action scenes.

that is why the minor "flaws" are forgivable to me... i'm sure given the time and money ... kdramas would have less glaring flaws.

Required fields are marked *

@ celexa

to be fair to crazedlu, not sure if he/she meant that the flaws came from budget or lead in, but I could be wrong.

There is truth to what you're saying though, but at the same time, big-budgeted productions definitely don't guarantee a flawless show because the story often takes the back seat (or so it seems). Take "IRIS" and "Athena" for example. They are the most expensive dramas ever produced in Korea (both budgets were close to 20 million). They both started filming 6-7 months prior to their premieres. Yet, despite having killer casts on top of that (I preferred Athena's cast as much as I love LBH), and "IRIS" having ratings break 40%... personally, both their stories failed to grip me (not sure about how you liked them?), especially "Athena." I definitely think "City Hunter's" story is better than both of them, but that's not saying too much for me since I really, really disliked the other two.

For me, I am enjoying CH but it's not even close to blowing my mind. I'm definitely not as impressed as others are by the plot and even more so now with some recent plot developments. And alas, I guess another factor is that I still don't find LMH hot. I think if I loved him, I'd like it a lot more?

@ Celesta1 and crazedlu... you ladies are correct that LMH love is the one factor that makes me gush over City Hunter.

big budget means almost nothing to me. haha. i've seen nearly perfect execution from low budget films and shows before, so to me, there's no excuse. if there's vision, deliver it.

that being said, i know no production is perfect, so i forgive easily.

but i just couldn't get over the ridiculous action sequence edits. i still laugh at episode 3 or 4's boat jumping edit and how he MAGICALLY got off the boat, WITH the crooked politician, WITHOUT those coastguard characters stopping him. hahaha. the dude isn't that smart or awesome and not nearly as good as jason bourne or michael scofield, so i was just awed that i'm supposed to suspend my disbelief THAT much throughout this show.. because we know that's not the only unbelieveable scene or edit. and the flaws very much extend, even start, with the writing.

the show isn't THAT bad. but it's also not that awesome.. in my opinion, at least. i did expect better from city hunter though. i don't know why, but i hyped it up in my head as redemption for less than awesome scripts like iris, athena, and rain's the fugitive. i was hoping that for once, korea could have a legitimate action drama with a good dose of funny and heart. my fault for hyping it up for myself, right. haha. oh well.

i'm glad people enjoy it. i'm just neutral about the show.

and even though i do like lee minho in the role, i don't swoon or drool over the boy like celest1al. hah. i think i'd like to, but i just don't. he doesn't really capture me that way. i know he's pretty, but there are plenty of pretty boys with much more swag (no other way to say it, hah) than him.

sorry crazedlu, but you've got the wrong person. I mentioned in both my responses to your first post that I definitely DON'T drool over LMH. I think he's cute, but that's about it... He's not hot or sexy to me, and I think my neutrality towards him maybe lessens my like for CH also. Hahaha so I'm quite the opposite.

I am also pretty neutral over the show, so I agree with everything that you said. LOL.

I agree about the PD. Love his touch on some of the scenes of earlier episodes. Somehow with the live shooting, the standard went down a little, so did the other two factors.

Awaiting for the surprise ending. Not keen on Season 2. I would like to see LMH in a darker, different role where he can get really rough and dirty.

Girls, girls! Enjoying hearing the podcasts but just one thing..........

You will notice that the sound keeps dropping out and every now and then a word or two goes missing.
It's just the "Noise Gate" on your recorder. Most of the time you can't adjust this as it's preset but you may be able to turn it off.
To avoid this problem just have the microphone or recording device closer to the both of you. Especially GF as she cuts out a lot more.
Also it sounds like you are crunching the file down to a lesser bit rate so it's not quite so large. That's why GF sounds like she's "under water" sometimes.

Ok so now I get why people like CH. It's all about the guy and how hot he is.
We stopped watching at ep 13. Just couldn't suspend disbelief anymore.
I admire that you guys can see passed all the absolutely unbelievable stunts and plot lines and hone in on just the romance.
The characters are so utterly unbelievable that the show beggars belief.
But who cares when there's a hot body to watch right?

Perhaps I would change my mind if Shin Min Ah was the female lead!!
Then I wouldn't care how dumb the story was!
The current lead is cute but not stunning.
Anyway I hope there are some more scenes where the guy gets his shirt off for you to enjoy.
The scene at the hospital when he drops from window sill to window sill only using his fingers was comedy gold.
But the angry father is the best comedy figure of all.

Oh well it's all entertainment and good fun anyway. Enjoy!!

I'm behind on City Hunter because of school, but I totally understand wanting to write a show / book / whatever. Usually not because it's good, but the concept is good and the writing sucks.

Ok, can't believe that I've been literally ignoring any podcasts post from DB before...These discussions are really hilarious, almost had me rolling on the floor with giddyness :). Hmmm, probably, it's because you're discussing City Hunter which makes it all the more enjoyable to me, I guess...

I like the touch on how you two ladies view these little things about City Hunter and emphasizing more on how it's created and can be possibly be created. It's like you guys could go on and on raving about the GOODNESS of this SHOW and yet never run out of things to say...

I mean the trifecta factor for one, can keep you going already. Then the music, then of course the would-be relativity with US shows (which I love, love :)), oh and of course should I even mention Lee Min Ho as City Hunter *giddy*. It can be endless discussion about how brilliant City Hunter is and can be!

Just like what JB said (or was is it GF?sorry confused with the voices)....

get to the point is. for city hunter, somebody has to die to make it g-g-goooood! :P i really think the prosecutor's dad should have really just DIE! bcuz i dont see the point of him being JUST coma or lingering in that drama anymore. to me, coma is not suppose to be an excuse :) for NANA, i know shes pretty. but i dont feel she did her part exceptionally well, just... okay. u guys are so right that its SO rare to find 3 major elements in drama and city hunter has it all. i can see myself rewatch it again after it ends. so going to misss it aww :( i personally thinks LMH has played his role well. i didnt like him in bof very much. his curly hair is sucha turn off! (fans, i just expressed my mere opinion, dont get mad!) personal taste the show itself has nothing much to be excited about but that was when i started to like LMH. I ABSOLUTELY lurve that storyline and how it starts off in Season 2. Those Korean producers or directors or whatever TV honchos need to get on their asses right now and fly to wherever you two are and meet you. They need to then hire you to write Season 2. And 3. And 4, or till LMH's hotness runs out. (How can that EVER happen?)

I don't know if it was the wine talking, and perhaps it's the stream of consciousness coming through, but the podcast was brilliant.

Most of the characters can be pronounced as they are written in Korean.
Pronounce "Yi, Min Ho" in Korean, yet it could sound "Yi, Mi No" as two syllables, 'Min','Ho' are quickly spoken in succession. I think non-Korean speakers might as well pronounce 'Yi, Mi No' for more correct pronunciation.
His last name, 'Lee' is pronounced as 'Yi (like a sound of alphabet 'E') when it becomes the the initial sound of a word.
In English, family name is placed at the end of full name so that most Koreans with surname 'Lee' romanize it as it is.
And the correct form to write his name...
According to his agency's website, it seems Lee, Min Ho.
However, Korean language has its own alphabet 'Hangeul' so that how to write names in English is somewhat inconsistent, which means the way that his agency write his name could be different from that of his passport.
hope this helps. :)
It'd be good if someone who is bilingual in Korean and English to correct or add a supplementary explanation if there's something I confuse.

I love that you two are Show fan girls more than Actor fan girls. Appreciating the Pretty but truly getting (can't think of a way to put this more delicately) off on the directing, writing, acting triumvirate.

And yes, Joss Whedon rocks at making a show. I've mentioned it before but he really had the right touch in Serenity killing off people to give that feeling of impending doom. Since he's good at myth I've always to see what he could do with CS Lewis' "Till We Have Faces". So now I want to throw it into the Joseon era and have him make his entry into kdrama format.

I think obsessing about how drunk you are is an indication of how drunk you are. In this slice you swearing a lot but not telling each other how much you love each other. Maybe that's not the kind of drunk you get, or it will appear in part 3.

Oh! Oh! I just thought of something while listening to the podcast. JB and GF are at the point where they're talking about why is the Prosecutor's no-good dad still alive. I mean, what more is his character needed for the story? Then I thought, what if in the end his family choses to donate his heart to Nana's veggie dad! It would be the ultimate way for him to repay the wrong he has done to Nana's family.

Because, really, what is the reason to keep him alive in the show?

It's just a thought.

I think City Hunter lacks a lot but I guess I've watched too many American dramas of this variety (including Angel and Buffy). I struggle to figure out just when Nana and Yun Sung fell in love, much less why. Because Ahjussi told him to watch over her? That's why he suddenly loves her? Also, the characters are also very sloppy in their actions almost INVITING their enemies to attack them back. I almost wanna root for the bad guys because Yun Sung makes so many stupid mistakes. There's too much going on with the plot involving Nana and Yun Sung, his mom, Jin Pyo, the president... Everything about the plot is just so contrived and I feel like it's a little bit all over the place. The lack of death is also a bummer for me too. I personally have been on Jin Pyo's side the whole time and thought it was ridiculous how Min ho's character kept delaying the revenge for stupid reasons. I get it if he can't kill anyone but how about NOT letting the prosecutor deal with his OWN father like some sort of test. Ugh, so frustrating. Almost more frustrating than any girl in ANY drama. I will give Nana props though for not being that annoying girl that I hate in the drama. I just wish she could be a sidekick more than a love interest because I don't see the romance and love between them. It's both forced and rushed.

I was really excited for this drama so I was severely disappointed that it was such a big flop for me that I wanted to stop watching entirely, especially between episodes 8 and 10 (I think when Nana and Yun Sung "fell in love" - yeah, out of the blue). I've withstood it for this long so I'm only finishing for the sake of continuity and this point. If the last few episodes play out like the rest of the drama has up until now then I won't be excited for a new season if there is one. I'm surprised it's still so popular because I'm only watching for Min Ho and because it's almost over, but to each their own. I'm glad this is a drama you guys can be excited about. Your plans for future seasons at least sound interesting. If they ever appear I'll check them out.
