The King 2 Hearts: Episode 14

I love a drama that lets its secondary characters shine, proving once again that a king is only as strong as the people who stand behind him. With sidekicks this good, who needs heroes?

EPISODE 14 RECAP

At the WOC, Jae-ha draws the USA ball and everyone cheers around them, as the team shoots nervous glances around the room. At the palace’s banquet to kick off the peace conference, Bong-gu’s minion peels off the label on the ball in his hand: “USA.” They chuckle, as evil villains are wont to do.

Secretary Eun flashes back to his conversation with Bong-gu, when he threatened to tell his upright son that his father is cavorting with the villain. Secretary Eun freaks out and counters that he’ll spill the beans about everything, which makes me think you don’t understand what you’re saying. You’re going to stop him from outing a secret alliance by… outing a secret alliance?

In any case, the banquet hall is filled with tension from both sides, as Jae-shin takes a deep breath and comes out onto the stage. The orchestra cues up and starts to play… Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries,” aka Jae-shin’s trauma-trigger. Eek.

She starts to tremble, and Mom looks over at Secretary Eun, asking why the music selection was changed at the last minute. Oh please don’t tell me you changed it. Aaaand, of course he did. AUGH. Ajusshi!

Flashback to the reason for Bong-gu’s threats—a simple song request for the orchestra. Now Secretary Eun shoots him a look, and Bong-gu makes a huh-face at him innocently. I’m sorry, but Bong-gu’s face, plus this music… anyone else hearing “Kill the waabbit, kill the waaabbit, kill the waaabbit”?

Jae-shin pulls herself together and approaches the mic anyway, which is exactly when Bon Bon the Butcher enters the room, right past Shi-kyung, and pops a chocolate in her mouth.

Jae-shin freezes and turns her chair around to get off the stage, but in her haste she hits something and falls right out of the chair. Flashbulbs go off. The guards scramble to block the view, and in the commotion, the assassin strolls right out.

Or so she thinks, until Shi-kyung follows his suspicious instincts and stops her before she gets to the door. Thank goodness for you.

Jae-shin’s fall ends up on the front page and the prime minister calls Jae-ha to tell him about it. He also adds that they have to let the U.S. win the WOC—they are important allies, and they can’t go around beating them in war games when they depend on American military support.

Jae-ha finds that ridiculous, besides which, the bigger problem is that they CAN’T beat them, even though they desperately need to. That’s enough to appease the prime minister’s fears for now.

Hang-ah marches up to Jae-ha and grabs his ring hand, asking what it’s made of. She and Dong-ha deduce right away that the USA ball was magnet-filled, citing a similar case in the World Cup.

She’s like, whadja wear that stupid ring for, anyway? Right? Stupid need for bling. But he says it’s the king’s ring, as in, must be worn for all official king business. Really? Then how come we haven’t seen it before? Just admit it went with your outfit.

He snaps back that SHE’s the one who said to just grab the first one he caught. She thwacks him in the chest, yeah, but if something felt off, you should have tossed it away! I love their adorable bickering. But it’s spilled milk anyway, so they decide to start strategizing, and look around for Kang-seok.

He’s busy sitting on the toilet, making faces. But he happens to overhear an unfortunate conversation, between two American team members and an Israeli soldier, who tells the Americans that they’re lucky to be matched against such an easy team, since Korea’s a war-torn country that has no chance of winning.

But by the time Kang-seok comes out all peeved, the guy who badmouthed North Korea for being aligned with Iran and made snide remarks about the Japanese occupation is gone, leaving the Americans to shoulder the awkward misunderstanding.

They try to clear the air, but Kang-seok is so riled up that he takes a friendly gesture as provocation (though I don’t know where in the States a pat on the back of the head is a way to greet a stranger), and he attacks. Oh no.

Cut to: Kang-seok getting bitchslapped by Hang-ah. Dayum. She rails into him for being so stupid as to raise a fist, and when he defends his reasoning, she just gets more livid, kicking and punching him as she yells that he’s risking everything for his pride.

She rips the Korean peninsula patch right off his uniform and tells him to get out. Aw, you can see it now, the regret on Kang-seok’s face, but it’s too late, and Hang-ah screams that he’s disgraced his country, and points at the door, shaking in anger.

Jae-ha comes out and stands between them, calmly telling her to stop. He says that he’ll handle it, and she apologizes for Kang-seok’s behavior. Jae-ha tells everyone else to leave the room so he can talk to Kang-seok alone.

Meanwhile the Americans kick up a fuss with the WOC officials and ask Korea to be banned from what was supposed to be a friendship game, which they turned into a brawl.

Jae-ha sits with Kang-seok for a while, and says that he knows what Hang-ah is like, and she’s under so much pressure. Kang-seok says it’s okay, but Jae-ha prods—yeah, but truthfully didn’t it piss you off to be hit like that, without her listening to your side?

He has to prod a couple of times and Kang-seok finally does agree that the hitting was kinda sucky. As soon as he admits it, Jae-ha asks how he thinks the American soldiers feel then. They were just going to the bathroom and got struck by lightning, out of nowhere. Ha, so smart.

Jae-ha suggests that they apologize, and says that if Kang-seok doesn’t feel up to it, he’ll do it himself. Even Kang-seok doesn’t think it’s right for the king to be apologizing, but Jae-ha says too much is on the line—the monarchy, their countries’ peaceful coexistence.

“Hang-ah and I would have to be split apart. We wouldn’t be able to see each other for the rest of our lives.” Kang-seok looks over at him, struck by what is probably the first display of sincerity he’s ever seen from Jae-ha.

The team minus Kang-seok lines up face-to-face with the U.S. team, as the WOC declares that Team Korea will get ten points deducted for their misconduct. Well that sounds fair. But the American general is hungry to turn this into some international incident, and decides he wants a formal apology from Jae-ha, as king.

The Korean general tries to stop him, but Jae-ha is willing to comply, whatever it takes to get them back in the competition. So he addresses them as the king and begins the apology, biting down on his words…

And then Kang-seok storms into the room to interrupt. He bows at the waist and offers his deep regrets and asks that they forgive him just this once. The American soldiers in turn apologize and bow.

The only one who’s still upset is their general, but the U.S. team leader declares that it’s enough for them, and puts out his hand to shake Jae-ha’s, and then they all hold hands and sing kumbaya. Okay, maybe not, but it’s just as cheestastic.

Shi-kyung is busy interrogating the suspicious girl whose pockets turn up a recorder and a bag of chocolates. He says that they’re drugs.

What? You mean those are funny chocolates? Uh… wouldn’t that make an assassin kinda lazy? Or even maybe forgetful of who her target is? Dude, I totally came here to kill someone… I think… Ooh pretty lights!

She thinks they ought to check, and eats one, and then has an orgasm. This is the strangest interrogation ever. Don’t you people have handcuffs?

He reaches for the recorder and she slams her hand down on top of his, and leans in close. She tells him that there are endless ways to kill a person, and says that recent work involved a sunset and a fireplace. Clearly not afraid of getting caught for her crimes.

She says that she’s working on a new idea—death by fear, panic, and calls herself an artist. What sells it is Shi-kyung’s reaction, because he takes her at face value and thinks back to Jae-shin’s reactions both tonight and back in the ambulance. Finally, someone making connections! He orders them to cuff her. You sure did take your time with that.

He asks Jae-shin to ID her photograph, and says that the woman has been in country three times, and the dates conspicuously match up with Jae-kang’s killing, the ambulance incident, and now tonight’s appearance. Excellent. This is why you’re on the case, smartypants.

Though she can’t remember anything from the night of Jae-kang’s murder, she does remember the ambulance and tonight. He shows her the photo. It instantly strikes fear and she nods. That’s the one.

She asks if he has enough to detain a foreign national, and says that she’s not ready yet to testify in an official capacity. What? Okay, I was sympathetic to all your fears up till now despite the princessy behavior, but you won’t testify to try and catch the person who might be responsible for killing your brother? Seriously? He says he won’t push her to do so.

Shi-kyung returns to his office to find Dad lurking around in the dark. He demands to know why he’s being a cowboy and holding foreigners without proof. Shi-kyung tells him that she’s an agent of Club M, the people behind the king’s murder.

Dad flips out and tells him to back off, and Shi-kyung just pushes back, “Father, what are you afraid of?” This, actually, as is written all over his face. He grabs the phone and orders that Shi-kyung be reassigned outside the palace at once.

Way to show your hand, Dad. Now he won’t suspect you AT ALL.

But Shi-kyung just whips out his top-level clearance card, given directly by the king. It supercedes Dad’s orders, so he’s going to continue with this investigation and Dad can’t stop him. Niiiiiice.

Bong-gu takes a leisurely bubble bath and delights in everything proceeding according to plan—the WOC (which he insists they allow to be played fairly, since there’s no chance in hell Korea’s winning) and his assassin’s “capture.”

Meanwhile Team Korea takes a boat to a deserted island, where the games will take place. Jae-ha braces himself, repeating over and over that they can do this. Hang-ah agrees. And then he breaks down and whines, “Aaaaah, it’s the U.S.! What are we going to do?” Hee.

The rules of the game are simple: both teams get dropped off on the island, and each team is given one set of keys. The only way off the island is one raft boat, requiring two keys to unlock. They have to get the other team’s key and get off the island to win. In the case that neither team gets to the boat in time, they’re scored on a point system.

They pack their gear, which each person gets to choose among their supplies, as long as it’s under the total weight limit. So… no rocket launcher for Kang-seok? Boo. Jae-ha and Hang-ah put their peninsula patches on each other with smiles, and they arrive on the island.

Each general, North and South, leads his team in a different cheer, and Jae-ha laughs that maybe they ought to work on reunification on the go-team cheer front. Heh.

Shi-kyung gets briefed on Mia (thank goodness, she has a real name), who goes by “Bon Bon” in Club M. She’s British SAS-trained, and yes her chocolates contain drugs, but they’re laced with something they can’t even identify.

The prime minister calls Secretary Eun in a panic—Club M is holding a press conference. Oh no! Not A! Press! Conference! Sigh. Shi-kyung watches as Bong-gu’s minion demands their agent’s release, and Dad storms in to give him a big I-told-you-so.

It’s a friggin’ dude in front of cameras, not a sign of the apocalypse! But Dad insists he release the prisoner at once and apologize to Club M, because the palace’s dignity is at stake. I really think you ought to worry about your own dignity, sir.

The upshot is that Club M has the means to cause a giant ruckus over something like this, and it’s essentially bait that gives them cause to throw their weight around (and what Bong-gu wants).

Dad tells Shi-kyung to fix it, and lick the bottom of their boots if he has to. Great advice for your son, there. Lick the terrorists’ boots! For dignity! It’s seriously killing me how much you’re destroying your son’s devoted pillar of fatherly trust.

Secretary Eun personally bows in apology to Bong-gu, and then Shi-kyung comes in with Mia in tow. Bong-gu yells at him for mistreating someone he considers his own daughter, and Mia turns to whisper in Shi-kyung’s ear that Jae-shin begged for her life like a coward “that night.”

She asks if he’s slept with her yet, and coos that maybe he hasn’t because she’s crippled. Shi-kyung balls his hand into a fist, quaking in anger. Bong-gu thinks to himself, “Hit her! That’s it! Hit her!” And we see a camera trained right at them, hidden from view.

But thankfully Shi-kyung doesn’t fall for her bait, and tells Bong-gu that he regrets his actions, but maybe next time he comes to the palace, he ought to bring a more appropriate bodyguard.

He calls her insane, and names the incident that got her kicked out of British special forces. She glares and says that shooting was an accident. Shi-kyung: “Oh really? Then what about your mother’s death?” She snaps and screeeeeeams at the top of her lungs that she’ll kill him, as she gets hauled away.

Bong-gu watches all this with a keen eye, suddenly very interested in the tin soldier with balls of steel. He asks his name, and perks up to hear it. He turns to Secretary Eun: “Son?” Shi-kyung looks over at Dad curiously.

Bong-gu puts his arm around Shi-kyung and leads him to the next room, where he calls him sharp, and wonders why he’s wasting his time following Jae-ha around. “Why? Because he might spill a few leftover crumbs from his cookies? But he has no strength. Come to me. I’ll give you some. I have lots of cookies.”

Ha. Creepy Cookie Monster is weird but kind of awesome. You’re trying to buy the ONE person who can never be bought. Silly man, what’s a bot gonna do with cookies anyway? Shi-kyung turns to him without changing his expression, “I’m sorry. I don’t eat rotten cookies.” *GASP* So. Badass. Aaaaaah! I love it!

Bong-gu walks away with a grin, but it continues to bother him. He flashes back to Jae-ha’s video letter and his declaration that he has people who believe in him. Bong-gu mutters bitterly that it must be nice. I love that Jae-ha is STILL taunting him remotely, via Shi-kyung. It’s so awesome.

Back on War Games Island, the team discusses strategy. Jae-ha: “Let’s copy the key!” Hahaha. I will admit, that’s the first thing I would say. His team lets out a collective sigh. What, are they going to whittle a copy, out of aluminum?

He’s like, fine, we can just swim back! Hang-ah: “We took a boat for three hours to get here.” Jae-ha: “Did we?” Pffft. He adds that there’s a way around the kill sensor that they’re wearing, since there’s a digital reset.

Everyone gapes, and Hang-ah’s the first to call him out for his cowardice, saying that they have to win fair and square. Jae-ha’s like, what’s not fair in war? Was Yi Sun-shin unfair because he built turtle ships in secret? Ha. Well when you put it that way…

She counters that cheating is different in this case, and he’s the king. But Jae-ha’s got too much on the line to worry about ethics, and reminds her that they have to WIN to be engaged. He takes her hand.

But she turns to him, resolute, and pulls away: “I’m sorry, but I won’t be engaged that way. I want a man I can respect. I’ll only get engaged if you win fair and square.” Jae-ha asks, pained, “Respect? Then what am I? A coward?”

She looks away. So does Kang-seok. Dong-ha averts his eyes. Damn, there’s your answer. He steps away as Hang-ah and the rest of the team plan their next move.

But the Americans have been descending on their bunker this whole time, and they reach the perimeter. They shoot a putty camera at the window and watch. Inside, the team asks who should carry the key.

Jae-ha tosses it on the table, still pouting that he doesn’t want the responsibility since he’s a pathetic coward, and asks “Northern team leader” for the easiest assignment. She turns to him, “Are you going to be this pissy the whole time?” HA.

He says it’s his strategy, and suggests games to determine the key-bearer. They finally play rock-paper-scissors, and Young-bae loses. He doesn’t want the responsibility, but Jae-ha just pats him on the head and says the dumbest-looking one should carry it so they’ll never suspect. Ha. Don’t be mean to Young-bae!

The problem is, the Team U.S. sees this whole exchange, so they know exactly who to gun down for the key. Team Korea splits up into three pairs, with Jae-ha and Hang-ah fighting over who gets to drive the ATV. (“I’m still the man!” Well if you have to say it like that, I dunno…) They head out in different directions, leaving Young-bae and Dong-ha at the base. Noooo!

As soon as they’re alone (and Dong-ha sits on the toilet), they get ambushed. Young-bae scrambles and hides under a desk, but eventually gets discovered, and with no other choice, he pulls the key out… and swallows it. Whoa. Hardcore.

Team Korea reassembles in the aftermath—no Young-bae and no key. They technically haven’t lost yet, since the Americans have to get the key out of their prisoner, which they can’t do if they “kill” him. Young-bae screams at them to go ahead and try to get the key, and yells, “But guess what? I’M CONSTIPATED!” Hahahahahahaha.

He tells them they can wait all day, but he’s not going to be pooping on their watch, and then the Americans have a debate about the best way to make him defecate, which I swear, I’m not making up.

Apparently they think the characters need to be racist to make us root against them (lame), and so they launch into theories about how Asians must be structured differently because their eyes are different. (Cringe, cringe.) And also, what the hell does that have to do with intestines?

Anyway, it makes them sound like idiots, which I guess is the point (thanks, oh-so-subtle writing), and then one of them takes out a swiss army blade and Young-bae freaks out. They hold him down and open his shirt, and he screams.

But they’re not psychos, and they tell him to calm down—they’re just going to give him an enema. Ew. Ew. Ew. Don’t you guys have laxatives or something?

Hang-ah discovers the camera and then Jae-ha answers a call from the other team, telling them to give up. They say they’ll have the key in a few hours, so there’s no use. That finally angers Jae-ha enough to light a fire under his ass.

Speaking of asses, the key is out. Aw, poor Young-bae. Ow. Ow.

The U.S. team heads to the shore like it’s in the bag, only when they get there, the boat is nowhere to be found. Score one for Team Korea. Elsewhere, Hang-ah and Not-Shi-kyung come ashore with scuba gear.

The Americans split up, and Kang-seok baits two of them, drawing their fire. Dong-ha and Jae-ha sneak into the U.S. team’s bunker and while Dong-ha keeps an eye on Young-bae, Jae-ha gets to work building something out of a lightbulb and his cell phone. Are you making real bombs? Is that kosher?

As Hang-ah rides through the woods, we hear Jae-ha tell her in voiceover that this mission needs teamwork, and it’ll never work if they don’t trust each other. “Trust me. And I’ll trust you.”

COMMENTS

Well, not the most suspenseful ending that could have come out of that scenario (you couldn’t give us a nice mission-fail cliffhanger?) and not the most eventful episode given the amount of story we usually get crammed into an hour. But I like the return to the WOC team and all the personalities pitted against each other, and I love that Jae-ha has an arc even within the games. He’s the guy who’s going to go for broke, rules be damned, which makes him a cheating coward at the outset (a nice callback to the whiny prince of yore), but he’s the one to come up with the crazy twisted plan when push comes to shove.

While other people are straight-shooters, Jae-ha comes at everything sideways, which is a great source of conflict for the couple, and also gives him the best chance of turning the tables on the game. I liked their war ethics debate, because it’s literally love and war compounded into one scenario—what’s fair, what’s right, and how do you walk away with both the win and the girl? Jae-ha thinks all he has to do is win to get both, but Hang-ah makes it clear that he has to win with her respect intact, otherwise, it’s moot.

And that’s a relationship I can root for, because she’s forcing him to be a better man. (I love that the second Hang-ah confirms his love, she constantly uses herself as the carrot—I won’t marry you unless you beat Bong-gu, and I won’t marry you if you cheat to win.) The war games are just a metaphor, but it’s an extension of what kind of king he’ll be—will he be the kind of leader to win at all costs, even without honor? Or will he live up to her challenge to be fair and honorable and still succeed? It’s counter to his instincts, but that’s why she makes him a better person by challenging him. She’s uncompromising in the same way that Shi-kyung is, and while the rest of the team might have turned a blind eye and let him have his way, she doesn’t let him get away with anything.

There are actually a lot of parallels between Hang-ah and Shi-kyung, especially now that they serve such similar functions for the pair of royal siblings. Take Jae-shin, for instance, who gets handled with kid gloves by her family, but gets taken to task by both Shi-kyung and Hang-ah in crucial ways, with no leeway for her self-pity. Without them forcing her to face her fears head-on, she might never be on the road to recovery. And that uncompromising stance is the perfect antidote to Jae-ha and Jae-shin’s entitled upbringing. Like Jae-ha learned from his first love, all everyone sees is their titles. But someone like Hang-ah doesn’t give a rat’s ass what your title is, but she DOES care if you’re going to be a cheating weasel. How kickass is a heroine who can say, Be a man I can respect, or else I walk away?

I actually found myself wondering what Shi-kyung would have said during the all’s-fair-in-love-and-war debate, but mostly I can only picture him gasping at Jae-ha’s suggestion to cheat, all quivering lip and pouty, “Jeo-haaaaa!” Perhaps it’s better that he wasn’t there. At first it did make me sad that he wouldn’t be in on the team reunion, but when we got our first Shi-kyung/Bong-gu scene, I realized how much more he’s doing as the lone good guy, left to deal with all the baddies. It tickles me to no end that Bong-gu immediately saw his value, and made him an offer to join the dark side, only to be slapped in the face by his loyalty to Jae-ha. *FIST PUMP* I will savor that moment for a long time to come. I always knew you had it in you, Earnest.

Funny how I enjoy this ep better than most who left their comments and seeing things differently :

I see Jae Ha as a different person from the earlier WOC training; I see Jae Ha treating Kang Seok and Young Bae as equals and team mates, very different from the past. I see how he walked into the scene with Kang Seok, calmly took over the situation and had man talk. Had it been in the past, he would be sarcastic, and adding more fuel to fire, while eating his donut. If he had to apologize to continue WOC, he would have cursed at them and rather be disqualified than to apologize.

I see him maturing so much as a person, his demeanor changed so much because he now has a woman who loves him, people who place their faith in him, family and country whom he is now responsible for.

I see Jae Ha and Hang Ah bickering again, but they make up just as easily when sharing the ride, and that smile.. Same but different too, remind me how married couples will quarrel but make up at night.

I see Americans comments of Koreans/Asians stereotyped, just as I see the portrayals of such Americans making such comments stereotyped. I'm taking it just for pure TV entertainment value. Why the harsh reaction ? Why is the reaction so different from the comments Jae Ha made about North Korea earlier ? Isn't those cringeworthy as well ?

This drama never fails to surprise me, I like that the writers are challenging themselves hard, and setting up ep 14 for the next climax since ep4. This just sets my expectation higher for his final fight against Bong Gu.

This is the ep which highlights Shi Kyung's strength totally, how he can help Jae Ha, to protect his family and to fight against Bong Gu, when left on his own, making all his decisions. My favorite scene is when Bong Gu puts his arm around Shi Kyung, not for obvious reasons, but for the satisfying thought that "ho-ho, Bong Gu have no idea how much Shi Kyung knows about him."

Remember gf earlier comment in ep12 how Jae Ha and Hang Ah fight the world together, hand in hand ? I see in this ep how both of them fight the world together hand in hand, with Shi Kyung just a few steps behind them.

He is that, but also very important, he is someone the princess can lean on. Someone who obviously thinks very highly of her, but also does not suck up to her. He does not let her walk all over him, and is full of tough "love".

I know he's the love interest for Jae Shin, but I don't know if we can call it LOVE yet. They are both bothered and confused, and they do feel something, but it is not there yet. I think it will be interesting to see how this couple develops during her Regency and everything that is happening.

I agree with your thoughts. I respect that different people have different interpretations of the drama but some reactions are just way too serious from what I ever imagined. I think this episode shows what an awesome royal chief secretary SK can be!

spot on Wood, spot on! I finally watched the subbed ep 14 and you know, all the cringeworthy racist things that were said - isn't it how people react sometimes? everyone has their own bias - americans, koreans, israelis - and the drama has no qualms putting it all on show, it takes no prisoners. Seriously brilliant writing!

LMAO! I love how you just had to add the "eating donut" part.

I think JH and HA will never get along. I love their bickering scenes.

Aw, wood.. this is exactly how i wanted everyone to react.
Sometimes, everyone getting riled up is the thing that lowers my enjoyment -- not the drama itself.
Seriously, i am happy when my K2H fanbase is happy.
Not sayin' don't pick at the flaws, but appreciating the other precious things in this drama.
WOOD, daebak. :) Agree with what you say.

I'd agree with you about Jae-ha's comments being cringeworthy as well.

I was re-watching episode 7 and what Jae-kang said to Hang-Ah about North and South Koreans struck me.

"We don't know enough about each other but we presume we do."

I think most of us here probably know very little about North Korea, so Jae-ha's prejudice against it doesn't evoke as much of a reaction.

“We don’t know enough about each other but we presume we do.”

Like those words @emmy said, I think that's what happen in this very episode. The strong reaction about the 'racist remark' among us is because we know those kind in our daily life, but in fact, we don't know how is it in Korea, either South or North. This drama isn't made from our perspective thus we feel strongly offended by that. We don't feel offended when Jae Ha said about North, because we don't know how is it there.

Aside from this case, I think this is one of strong point of TK2H writers, their dialogue is very touching, and it can imply in daily life. Almost in every episode, we'll found words/sentence that we can use to reflect at our selves. Each time those sentence appeared I also strucked, and sometimes I need to paused the whole scene because I was drown at deep thought. Does it happens to anyone else here too?

I like this episode too. It doesn't have many different scenes, mainly 2, but I feel that they were important ones.

The first is the scene between SK and BG which I feel is very necessary. So far, only JH has been pitting his skills against BG. SK needs to see the man he's up against and we need to see that he is just as able to stand up to him. It is also crucial that BG understands what JH means by 'People'. So far Sec Eun has not been a good eg. I just hope that BG doesn't try to get rid of those supporting JH, so that he'll have no one, like him.

The second is the WOC competition. I thought that it was rather exciting, wondering how Team Korea's going to win by working together. What I don't understand is why the PM asks JH to let the US win because they are their friends. SK needs the US bec of treats from NK, but if SK and NK work together, and JH and HA get married, they don't really need US that much.

@crazyajummafan,
It shows the PM had no faith in the reunification. All he wanted was to keep the status quo. For a selfish politician, almost any change to the current set-up is bad. No matter if the change could really be beneficial in the long run.

Talking about SK an JS, have you guys heard their love theme? It's a little sad, but lovely. I especially like this part: "When sadness passes, you will be my one and only love
When the tears dry, you will be my one and only sun
Little by little, slowly, I will go toward you
I can't forget you even for a moment".

It kinda gives me a little hope that, at the end, everything will work out for them.

I am just so scared for them. Although that part of the song gives me hope (I mean, why use a song for them that clearly talks about a possible future after all the suffering), I still have this gut feeling that they will not get their happily ever after. And they so deserve it.

”I cringed at the glaringly racist remarks from the American team and I’m wondering how well that went over with Koreans or even Korean-Americans or even Asians or even Americans or even….anybody. -_-’ The writers didn’t need to make them look that bad for us to root for the Korean team. We were already doing that.”

-----------------------------

I, Adjovie say,

That is REAL LIFE!!!!!!! As an American who lived in S.Korea for a full year, I can honestly say the writer was being QUITE NICE!!!

I’VE HEARD WORSE FROM FELLOW AMERICANS even as they lived on South Korean soil, dated South Korean women…!

Seriously *rolls eyes* the writer toned it down big time—for real!!!

Side Note: I'd suggest some in here (just a few), while waiting for next weeks episodes, DO a quick research on S.Korean history as it pertains to U.S. and S.Korea relations…but I doubt you will so I'll just keep it moving…

egads! That's rough! Facing racism in one's own country from a foreigner is worse (to put it mildly) than facing it abroad!!

Well said ! I applaud the writers for bringing forth true to life dialogues without worrying about being politically correct or controversial. That's what sets this drama apart from the others!!! I also commend all the actors who are in this drama for being so gutsy to take the roles to begin with. Prejudices, stereotypes, and racism are all over the world whether we want to see/hear it or not. Most dramas would steer clear from this just to be safe. I love this drama from the start because it is gutsy and tries to be as real as possible. Looking forward to what the writers will come up with next.

THANK YOU!Finally someone with unbiased judgment and common knowledge.I can't believe some people's reactions,as if racist comments never happen!(Yeah, that's why the world is all roses and rainbows!).It just shows you how most people only see(and hear) what they want to see.Yes it's a sensitive issue and yes it's uncomfortable to hear, but that's what this drama has been doing all along with the whole SK-NK situation and even SK domestic politics comments(ie. secretory Eun telling Jae ha that they'll release a celebrity scandal to distract people after the miscarriage incident). So why is it all of a sudden a HUGE deal? just because it involves the US?

0

Required fields are marked *

Excellent point!

I totally admire how gutsy our writer team can get.

I read about some incredible treatments SK women received, from their own countrymen, just by dating foreigners. I was on a business trip in Seoul when we passed a compound and I saw some westerners milling about, so I asked our Korean guide about the place. He gave a very terse answer (it's a US base with residential quarters). From the way he answered it, I could tell that's not a subject he'd like to dwell on. Very complicated situations.

Another thank you for being rationale! I think the portrayal of the American soldiers was pretty close to what would have happened in real life! Cocky soldiers say dumb things! I'm pretty sure the show isn't saying that every American is racist. And I didn't even get that feeling at all!

The truth is that there are people who are racist and K2H even showed Jae-ha saying worse things about North Koreans earlier. There's worse that this show could've made the Americans say and do.

Judging by the comments, I'm assuming that these people didn't hear the case about the American soldiers who bullied a fellow soldier who happened to be Asian by saying even worse things and making him do horrible things. In the end, he ended up killing himself. And this just happened in the past year! Just a few months ago!

Don't take it personal guys!

I agree with you totally!
I think they just tried to portray the soldiers a bit cocky and that's why they said dumb things but seriously, I was scared by the reaction here.. :)
I didn't get the feeling that the writers wanted to make us believe that US people are racist.. Just before that we can see that the US team leader is also kinda noble.. How his subordinate wanted to "kill" Young Bae or open him up to take the key back and how he reacted .. ETC.
To me, that's was just the competition, cockiness, etc. talking and the dumbness that human can display sometimes.. Like everyone said.. There was other "racist" remarks from JH to HA and from north to south.. Etc.
Anyway.. I just hope everyone don't take that too seriously and continue to enjoy what a great show the writers give us ! :)

No need for dialogue, her expressions will say it all. There's nobody like her in k-drama.LSG -He'll grow on you. Like his other drama but this role is for him. The other's that were chosen before him will be ok but not as good as he portrays the prince/king role. Of course I love Hyun bin and I'm sure he'll be perfect for this role also. Does everybody agree that Ha ji won has the MIDAS TOUCH.I want a drama-reunion between Ha-jiwon and Hyun bin as soon as he comes out of the military.the best OTP #1.

I love this episode too.

I think for some viewers, the introduction of amateur foreign actors (as I said it before, something that's required by the story), brought the real world out from this fantasy and some of the real world stuff made some uncomfortable.

But that's exactly the big attraction of TK2H. It does not escape the real world. In fact, it faces it squarely. And I think its depiction of it very fair.

Sk steals the show for this episode as the knight in shining armour. I love how he creases his eyebrow. How he stands behind jh and js, and how he is the one who renders word of encouragement when all odds are against them. Like he told jh that he is already v strong so come out of his shell, and js that she is shining brighter than the shooting stars. Even off screen, he is happy to be the supporting character when he generously complimented lsg and said he will serve the king till the end. Saw songs that sk sang in his previous drama, what's up - there's those magical changes from grease and a rather operatic song - which showcases his vocal talent in being able to take on a wide repertoire of songs. Yet, he is so understated and humble.

Don't know if it's okay to do this here but if it's not please just delete this comment.

For HDTV 720p version (the only version I deem worthy), ep. 1 to 10 go to http://www.inpforums.com/korean-drama/66782-%5Bk-drama%5D-king-2-hearts-2012-a.html

For ep. 11 & 12 you need to google (using drama full name and HDTV 720p and episode numbers as search words). Sorry I did not note down the sites' names.

I have not started the process for ep. 13 and 14. I will do it this weekend.

Note those are raw and huge files (> 1.5 Gb). I have Chinese subtitles srt files from other sources. I think English subtitles srt files can be downloaded as well.

A lot of trouble, right? But this show is worth it.

Finishing episode 14 (without sub yet). and this is Time to make long winded comment ^^

as wood (comment #101)has pointed: Why the harsh reaction ? Why is the reaction so different from the comments Jae Ha made about North Korea earlier ? Isn’t those cringeworthy as well ?
This, is I think what happened in S. Korea too. This is the dark comedy within TK2H. When the topic was related to 'others' we tend to laugh it off, but when it's related to 'us', we took moment and think about it seriously. I'm not american nor Korean, but i think that happened everywhere around the world. If there is someone who made sarcasm about my country, or my race, I assured you that i alreadyI am guaranteed to make a fist in front of his/her face. But to remind us, this is a dark comedy, when we are able to laugh it off, and those just to make us realize, and hopefully to make us learn too.

More than that racist comment, Anyone else paid attention to Israeli soldier - US soldier incident in the toilet? That is Israel who make comment, but US who got blame. For me, that is PERHAPS a portrayal about Israel-US relationship. Many of Israel moves is supported by US. Though I have different ways to view it, but THAT is maybe one of the portrayal, about Israel riding USA. I have no opinion about tre blame though, but What do you think?

About Jae Shin, I'm so impressed by Lee Yoon Ji. She make her paralysis seem real, even whithout grand action. I kept rewind her scene when she sit. Her legs...seem hanging, seem so effortless, so natural, seem there is no energy in his legs. I hope there'll be no miracle cure here, I'll love how she overcome her new weakness and being the bold, brave princess that we know.
Regarding the music, and Bon Bon appearance. I think that is so creepy, furthermore whwn Bon Bon said that she is researching how to make new death toward fear. Does she plan this? and the Music..does kim Bong Gu also plan this, to make the Princess trauma? I can't wait for this answer. If the answer is yes, then this might be the creepiest, cruelest thing in the world, but also the most awesome writing ( though illogically, I know)

Anyone else think that Mia aka Bon-Bon as pathetic? I sense there'll be dark background that make her turn into Bong Gu's pawn, will very happy if the writer create depth background for her too. And, as well as Bong Gu too.

Required fields are marked *

Right now I dislike that woman more than Bong Gu! That's how much I dislike her! She is just a tool, no personality, no background, no feeling (okay, maybe something there toward her mother - terrible really). I am not sure I want the writers to spend any time on her. In fact I hope a quick ending to that character all together.

I can't take these villains seriously at all. Seriously, what the hell is up with that chocolate orgasm interrogation? Jeez. And of course now Club M's going to target both Eun Shi Kyung and Jae Shin, nooo :'(

Also, during the explanation of their mission, I just keep thinking that their mission is not all that dissimilar to all the missions on Running Man or 1N2D :P In which case, it's right up Korea's ally and they should be able to win this easily, ha.

And while it's kind of disappointing that Jae-ha is already showing his old leopard marks with the whole "we'll win this by cheating! I'm a coward!", I can't say I'm surprised tbh. People just don't change overnight, and I forsee lots of problems with the team unification and all.

And that spy camera from the US is freaking creepy. YOU'RE SHOWING ALL YOUR CARDS TO THEM, DARNIT.

...You're... eating the keys. SHIT HE TOTALLY DID WHAT THE FRACK. EVEN THE US SOLDIER LOOKS DISGUSTED AND THIS SHOULD NOT BE AS HILARIOUS AS IT LOOKS LIKE. Now they're just going to force you to shit it out. Oh God I'm disgusted at myself for typing the last sentence out. "I have constipation" ahahahaha.

...I can't believe they're discussing this AT ALL. I can't take this show seriously. UGH.

Heeee, and it's SO like a Korean variety show to actually run with the boat if they can't get the keys. (I can imagine Jae Suk or Jong Kook doing it for their survival, hee.) What did I tell you, this should be right up their alley.

And this is, what I said a remark of Jae ha's IQ, he has this way of thought which isn't straight up, but more lateral, or peripher thinking.

Goal: Escape from the island
How: Ride a boat which need two keys, one is in other team.

It's amusing how Jae Ha was so focusing in the goal, to the point he suggest about swimming LOL.
And when he make the plan, well, what can I say? He see the two point of it. Boat and Key. No key, but there is no boat, means no winner.

TBH, Jae ha's way of thinking just remind sme with Eun Ji Won from 1 night 2 Days season 1^^

I do wonder what shaped his thinking - probably his upbringing as a royal? I mean, he did some military service for, what, 2 years? So he should be familiar with the whole military honour code and whatnot. I'm just amused that he chose to completely disregard all those and thinks "it's every man for himself". And hey, I can't fault him with that. In a dog eats dog world, his unorthodox thinking is an unexpected commodity.

"So he should be familiar with the whole military honour code and whatnot" I want to comment about this, if I'm not mistaken there is several remarks from us, about his upbringing demeanor to not considering honour. But in fact, when you had experienced the 'battle field' those honour become vague, TBH, I think they only exist in the learning/training phase.

I really want to hug queen mother for being so brave despite her fear. In episode 11 when JH plead for her help to do his big plan to meet HA in NK, she keeps saying no, no way, because it's too dangerous. But in the end she still helped him. In ep 13 JH tried to persuade her to allow him to do WOC, to let JS to take the throne while he's doing WOC, and to catch BG, she also said no. She's so scared that she wanted they just being pathetic because she doesn't want to lose another son. In the end, we know that she allowed JH to do his plans. I can't imagine how much pressure she bears. She looks scared most of the time, but keeps trying to be strong. What a mother she is. Applaud to Yoon Yeo Jung for doing such a great work. *Hugs*

She is really a great actress.
Osi, I watch episode 13 first in RAW, and that scene, along with all of her scenes, when she want to protect her little family always make me bawling, literally. Yoon Yeo Jung performance is so genuine, you can feel a mother heart in her. When she turns her glaze away, we understand that she can't endure it anymore, and how much this burden has made her suffered. The time when she swallow her words of tears, the time when she said: 'Jaekang-i, neo Hyeong-i, cheon-ni, eomma, eomma adeil-ya' (Jae kang is,... Your Hyeong is,... My..., mother's son)-sorry for wrong pronounciation-, my tears just flowing. Those words are the only korean words that I understand fully in episode 13. I don't blame the subtitle to simplifying it into "Before Jae Kang Your Hyeong, he was my son". But the choice of words, how she delay each word, the ways she deliver it was beautifully bitter, beautifully sad. She correct her self, emphasize it between her tear, putting Who is Jae Kang for her, and for Jae ha. That sole scene is enough for me to tell us how much she want to convince Jae Ha to avoid conflict with Bong Gu, and how much she scared for losing him too.

I can't say anymore for her just...*standing applause*

How hard it was for her to finish that sentence, which was literally simple, but actually so painful for her. I just realized that we barely mention about that standout actress here. So, *Standing ovation
Applaud to Seung gi, too. He can carry the role so well and that mother-son moment really leaves me such a deep impression. Can you imagine if JH were played by an actor with mediocre acting? @ reglest

I enjoys eating chocolate and listening to classical music. But, it's the first time a girl eating chocolate and classical music on drama creep me out. So creepy.

And you know what, one of my friends uses Samsung Galaxy something (not sure the type). She uses the same message alert as the one used by Sec Eun. It always reminds me of KIM BONG GU everytime I hear that tone! The scenes of Sec Eun receiving message from kim bong gu were replayed in my mind. Ugh.

0

I so agree with you guys. I've noticed her before in other dramas and she is an outstanding actress. But here she has out-done herself. She portrays the Queen Mother with such vulnerability, tenderness, strength, fear and integrity that every scene she is in is gold. Even if she is on for only a sew seconds, it makes an impact. So much so you look forward to her next scene and feel a sense of loss when there isn't.

Some of the other actors (cough ... the chap playing Bong gu and his coterie of minions) should take a page out of her book so I do not have to wear out my Fast Forward button on my remote.

I think so. Yoon Jae Moon is great in portraying Kim Bong Gu. And I think Bon Bon a.k.a Mia is great, too. Yeah, most of the foreign actors are not so good at acting.

0

I agree. I saw him in Tree with Deep Roots and I thought he was a really good actor there.

He gives me the creeps here but it's still interesting to see what other kind of crazies he's gonna pull out from his whackjob of a brain in trying to destroy our king.

And it's true that the weakest link in this drama are the foreign actors but, at this point of the drama, I just filter out the bad acting and enjoy the ride. It's been a roller coaster and I'm loving it.

0

I have never seen this actor before so am only basing my opinion on his performance here. Perhaps it is a cultural thing as I am not a fan of this kind of acting (the William Shatner school of acting).

Still I agree the foreign actors are the weakest links but I have a strong suspicion quite a few of them are not really actors. Just based on my own experience in Asia that is.

I really liked this episode! I don't think shows should always end on HUUUGE cliffhangers but the end still made me want to see what the hell their plan was to beat the US. I am super confused with the rules of this WOC game though. I thought both teams had the same weapons? Where did the US even get that the camera-goo thing? How could they bring that on the island? And the iPad too! I thought the guns were just like lazer tag type guns that just shoot your opponent to get them "out"? Kind of confusing why Young-bae is so terrified to get "killed." Is it for the rest of the WOC or just that round that he'd be out?

Anyways I just can't wait till next week!

I'm so glad that there are still a lot of people here who enjoyed this episode as much as I do, with all the interpretation and analysis of those "racist remarks" as said in the earlier comments. Going forward, I'm sure even if disappointed, this wouldn't stop everyone from watching and supporting the show. This is seriously a crack, you wouldn't be able to stay away from it.

WOC IS a competition with people from all different countries coming together, no matter how 'friendly' it is supposed to be, plus people taking part are all top ranking militarians full of pride and self-confidence, thus I feel that "racist remarks" are somewhat inevitable...

The smile that can melt millions of hearts! Just watched this episode with eng sub. The "racist remarks" weren't as bad as I thought. It was just a strategy to scare Yong-bae. The situation calls for it. What made me cringed was when the American soldier was holding the key and telling his comrade how Yong-bae needed a first aid! Poor boy, it made me more proud of him that he cried not because of the wound but because of disappointment for losing the key.
Hand on the cheek again on the next episode, but this time JH's hand on HA's cheek! TK2Hearties FightKing!

Was not bad as a filler episode, giving us insight into all of what's going on. We knew that the WOC championship would play an importance in future episodes so it makes sense they are there. Of course, the writers know that a lot watch dramas for the romance so it will not interest everyone. SK did us proud and I saw the influence that JH had on him in that moment that he investigated his prey and used what he learned to his advantage! Boy, I had a proud Momma moment! JH was being JH. Not sure why anyone thought he would have miraculously changed! His love for HA is definite and him wanting to get married by any means necessary was true to form. But can't wait to see JH and his MacGiver (for those too young or not familiar, MacGiver was a show where the main lead always came up with gadget using what was available) moment and what results, should be interesting! He did say his IQ was 187! Can I say one more time how proud I was of SK?!!

WHY DID THEY EDIT IT OUT?! So poignant, moving, and beautiful!

It blows my mind that Jae-ha has come such a LONG way. It further elucidates the fact that while JH wants to avenge BG for his hyung and SIL's death, if push comes to shove he'll choose to do right by his people! Is this THE Jae-ha who'd do anything for his family and now despite hating BG's guts will not short change the people he loves including the Korean citizens?! wow!!

I wish they'd have gone with the original title of "The King". This drama is primarily about Jae-ha, his love for his fam (incl HA) and his countrymen, and the things he's willing to do for this love, his growth as a person and a ruler, and the impact of those who believed in him when he was at the lowest of lows (his fam + Shi Kyung). There's so much more...I'm merely scratching the surface!!

In my 2 years of drama watching I haven't come across a character as complex and enthralling as Jae-ha!! <3

From what one of the English speaker actor said on Ep11 recap (yes, the actor commented here), the production has difficulty to find English speakers who can act AND want to act. So, what to do.. they cant even be picky and choose the suitable ones. Lets just hope the scene with them will end soon.

It's not just the US soldier, all of the 'officer' didn't look like a soldier to me. When Jae Ha arrived at the WOC location, I'm barely holding my laugh, there is the scene when English Soldier marching and soldier in blue uniform jogged. I mean, that's not the way soldier run and march. But I'm kinda okay with that. Thanks for the english speaking actor who give us some insight^^

First of all, thank you girlfriday for this awesome recaps you write every week! Since I watch TK2H everytime raw they are essential for understanding the storyline.

Like so many of you I'm also totally captivated by our beloved Earnest Bot Eun Shi-kyung. Jo Jung-suk's characterization of him is absolutely convincing. In my opinion he's even breathtaking. ^^

The scene where Bong Gu lays his arm on Shy-kyung's shoulders was that terrible moment I knew he will be the next target of this crazy man and his followers. I think Bong Gu didn't really intend to win Shi-kyung for his side but he rather tested the loyalty of the king's right hand man. Now he can be sure.
And we can be sure that Shi-kyung will have some thrilling screen time the next few episodes ...

Regarding to comment #133 from Jane - and regardless of the article's authenticity - a tragic love story would make sense, much to the joy of my drama-addicted heart and simultaneously to the horror of my love for Shi-kyung.
You already know, this is a KOREAN drama! What that means I don't need to explain to anyone here.

As a hobby-writer I would probably create a similar sad ending for our shining secondary leads. And the preview of episode 15 fits exactly into that storyline. Did anyone notice the weapon at the princess' head? I fear her suffering is not over yet, although I really wished for her a happier time from now on it seems to be the exact opposite. Actually, and after the events of this episode, I'm not sure Shi-kyung can continue his researches of Club M officially. That makes him an easier target for our villains.

I really don't want to depress anybody, it's just my impression of the current events in the show, and of course a good piece of speculation.

A targic love story is indeed make scenes, and judging from previous episode, the writers don't hesitate an inch to make us fall into the lowest point. However, I sincerely pray that will not happen. The princess already suffering too much, please writer-nim don't give her more.

Regarding the preview of episode #15 that you mention, I think isn't it one of the flashback scene? Jae Shin's clothes seem similar with the ones she wear when she went to Anmyeondo.

But, me too, think there'll be something happen to Jae Shin in episode 15, judging from Shi Kyung's voiceover about how Princess isn't found yet, and how frustrated Shi Kyung is-though it also can related maybe with his discovery about his father involvement in previous King's murder-

You don't need to feel guilty dear, your comment just make the discussion heated, and I love how most of us discussing it ;)

Okay, I'm a little bit relieved for the princess, because I've checked that scene again and you are right, it is in all probability a flashback. That are the very same clothes she has worn at the fatal day of the kings murder. On the other hand I'm worried again, since you write Shi-kyung's voiceover says the princess isn't found yet. (I don't understand Korean, so I didn't know yet)

Omo, what is going to happen? D: Excitement and fear became my most loyal company the recent days.
It's just a drama, I know. But still the feelings are true, aren't they?

I'm finding this show, i.e., this writer, to be very psychologically sophisticated, to an unusual degree.
I first started thinking that about JH's character: JH is really very psychologically savvy in understanding others, including how to manipulate them (i.e., understands what motivates them to act and how they will act in response to his instigations), and his adeptness at the mindgames. Then I realized the whole show is that way: for example excellent, accurate portrayal of PTSD and brainwashing (JS), narcissistic psychopathy (BG), the slippery slope of ethical compromise (SK's dad accepting the gift from Club M), etc.
I'm very impressed!

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I also like that JH's skill at mind games actually has a history - he found out about the nature of people at a very young age with the sudden behavior change of his first love. This forced him to abandon all those naive expectations he had about people, which we would usually only learn to abandon in adulthood. JH has been building his knowledge of human nature since he was a kid, which explains how easily he can make others do his bidding.

I don't actually believe he has such a high IQ since Jae Ha doesn't exhibit the qualities of people with extremely high IQs. One thing is they usually seem withdrawn and antisocial while growing up because they cannot relate to people their own age. Jae Ha seemed like he was way popular...at least with the ladies being a former playboy and all.

Required fields are marked *

Well, it's a stated premise of the show that he has an IQ of 186 or 187 (can't remember which). And, as he disclosed to Hang Ah, he was not able to truly relate to others - built up walls to keep them at a distance and related to them only superficially. (Granted, that's not necessarily related to brilliance; but/and it's not impossible for someone who is very bright to also be able to relate to others.) Agreed, he does act kind of stupidly most of the time, especially early on, and in fact, usually in the ways he relates to others. And it seems he's been able to skate by in his lazy manner, which could argue for some intellectual ability that doesn't have to try hard to do well enough. That's why I enjoy seeing him when he is really focusing those purported smarts and demonstrating them in his skill in the mindgames. I guess I'm intrigued by the interaction of his intellectual intelligence and his social-emotional deficits.

The same stubborn messages persists, people just don't change their views easily, same reasons why same old bias, prejudices, stereotypes lasts, lol.

Bad acting by foreign actors ? Please enlighten what is good acting then.

I continue to be amused by the selective nit-picking when I myself barely find enough time and energy re-watching to sieve what is fact and what is fiction, trying to catch the double meanings, metaphors, satires, and relating that to the real world.

Eg :

1) US and their high-tech toys ? That's the poor and rich divide, and no games are ever fair to start off with. (ie Speedo's LZR swimsuit in the Olympics)

2) Donuts in North Korea ("Ich bin ein Berliner" , western influence - ie Starbucks in China)

3) Ep3 - WOC reps. Familiar high-handed and bullying tactics. (US FTAs, Kyoto Protocol, the recent wars; the foreigners, the expats at work in Asia, discrimination faced even in own backyard)

4) Ep5 - Jae Ha's declaration of love at the stadium. (Ah .... as we are also conned by Prince Charles and Diana's love story)

Many many others ...

What I mean to say is that some things in TK2H just should not be taken literally and at face-value. This drama is brilliant because it is hard-core yet it is entertaining. We are not doing it any justice, if we are not more hardworking, giving the writers the benefit of doubt, and trying to understand what they may convey.

If we continue to interpret based on our own limited knowledge and bias, how do we learn and grow to be a better person ?

TH2K is a gem not just for its high quality production and actors, but also the political undertones. And how many Kdramas have that ?

Lastly, I seem to be the only one having bigger issue with Hang Ah "flying" to carousel top to save Jae Ha, than the WOC scenes, where selective nit-picking is concerned.

Took me a week to get over it ... ha ...

^^

I agree with Hang-ah flying to the carousel roof. I went "LOL" and "WTF". I thought there could be better ways to depict her landing on the carousel...but I just took it as a satirical moment, like the super slow-mo run-and-hug. My interpretation of this drama is that the PD inserts over-the-top scenes just for laughs.

Thanks for all of the thing you point out, that is just showing how much depth this drama take on, and yes, those are what makes this drama a gem, a baroque one, an unusual shaped, but interesting and very unique that make you want to keep it al the time.

This drama is testing audience too, no doubt about it.

Some fixed concepts, conceits, prejudices, ignorance, blind spots, willful but naive interpretations...this drama reflects all of those.

I've learned a lot through watching it, and through the discussions on this site. How many other K-dramas promote thinking and looking at things past face value?

As for the flying Hang Ah, that's one artistic license I am willing to grant. Hahaha.

I'm sure it's just me but every time she does a high kick in those short skirts or even the butt-ugly loose skirt she wore at home, I hope she wore nice knickers because she be flashing them everywhere.

And seriously, if you wore a short skirt and did any kick higher than knee level, they''ll be hiking up to knickers level. Hard to be taken seriously in a kick-arse way when you're flashing your knickers.

And yes, I know this from experience.

Just to add one to your list of SELECTIVE nit-picking - or not:

When Hang Ah 'escaped' from her house arrest to go to rescue Jae Ha, almost all applauded the strength of her love and bravery and badaxx attitude.

But, in doing so, she disobeyed a direct order from someone with higher authority. She put the two soldiers guarding her at risk when restraining them (accidents could happen you know). Not to mention the black marks on their careers if there was any reprisal.

Is that an honest behavior from an officer? Or we can't nit-pick ALL THE TIMES?!

WOO. just finished reading all the comments on this certain recap..
After reading all the arguments, answering to some.. laughing to some, and praising some..
I am exhausted!

Verdict: sometimes, just sit back and enjoy.

The over analyzing was good for some parts, which i think allowed us a tremendous respect for the writers. But sometimes, it really causes more of a big deal than the writers intended.
I know despite many showing dissatisfaction, i just love this drama too much i am letting all the little distractions(like bad acting from foreign actors.. dw, k-drama addicts should get used to it), i let fly over my head. Plus, Shi kyung acting all badass. I mean has he been taking lessons from our majesty? "I don't eat rotten cookies" Hang Ah and Jae Ha fighting together? The WOC team fighting together? Can't get better than that. I am in love, have been, love no less. love, more..methinks. Yeah im guessing there wasn't the usual packed episodes this drama gives us -- which is probably why everyone was so focused on the racist comment.

Im guessing since WOC is officially making their way back into our lives, are all the guys in the house favoring this episode?
I do wonder the number of males following this drama & thread, though. heh. :)

Anyways..I have no energy left!! K2H, recharge!!

I FINALLY got the chance to watch this episode, and after reading some (not all) of the comments, I still have to reiterate that I am consistently surprised and delighted by how amazing this show is.

Yes, the english-speaking actors are, by and large, terrible. But I'm willing to forgive that for explosive scenes between Shi-kyung and Bong-gu (rotten cookies? gah, SO GOOD), for the teamwork between North Korea & South Korea, for the deepening relationship of mutual love and respect between Jae-ha and Hang-ah, and for the incredible commitment of the Korean actors.

I really, truly do not know why people are so sensitive about the (few) racist remarks by the US team. I thought that the US was actually portrayed in a pretty favorable light in this episode (not that it really matters to me, because this is a satire and it has certainly lampooned Korean culture more than it has lampooned American culture). In the bathroom scene, Kang-seok is the one clearly in the wrong, attacking American soldiers for opinions stated by an Israeli soldier (which Hang-ah clearly points out when she rails against Kang-soek for assuming that because it was spoken in English, it was spoken by an American). During the hearing to decide what to do about the attack, there's one American douchebag, but the rest of the American team is gracious about Kang-soek's heartfelt apology.

During the actual tournament, some US soldiers make crude remarks in the presence of a Korean soldier, largely to intimidate him. This seems a perfectly reasonable depiction of wartime behavior to me. Yes, they are in poor taste...but their behavior is totally realistic, to me. At the start of the game, the soldiers are gracious, if arrogant (also realistic, coming from the last year's WOC victors).

Just had to get that off my chest :).

Now, onto more interesting things: How much do I love the Jae-ha/Hang-ah dynamic in this episode? They are truly a team, and balance each other perfectly. Jae-ha understood Kang-seok's sense of pride and was able to reach KS emotionally, where Hang-ah could not. Similarly, Hang-ah understood that the purpose of this competition for her and Jae-ha is not just to win, it's to show the public (including, but not limited to, their home countries) that North Korea and South Korea can come together as a formidable opponent while maintaining their honor and dignity.

I love that Jae-ha is a brilliant strategist (seriously, I know the team brushed him off, but he sounded like a military general when he was brainstorming ideas on how to use the key to trick the US), but Hang-ah implicitly understands the importance of honor and (at the very least, the appearance of) earnestness to a leader. She grasps the public nature of his position and has this amazing ability to appeal to the public in a way that even Jae-ha's mother cannot. We saw this quality a little bit when she was being interrogated for her (possible) connection to Jae-kang's death--how she effortlessly spun the politically complex situation into a simple and straightforward love story, all the while turning her own powerlessness (the fact that she loves Jae-ha more than he loves her) into an advantage (winning the sympathy and respect of the public for her straightforward honset), and I love that we're getting more of it now. I also like that, while Jae-ha is super sharp and a great strategist, Hang-ah has a ton of practical knowledge and is not as blinded by pride/comfort/personal attachments as Jae-ha is. She's the one questioning the skunkretary's lies in the context of Jae-kang's death; she's the one who deduces that the USA ball is magnetized; she's the one who discovers that the Americans planted a camera on them. Her and Jae-ha's relationship isn't just a matter of "brawn" vs. "brains"--the two have their own strengths and weaknesses, and their types of intelligence complement each other.

I do think that the writers tend to excel more with the development and portrayal of personal relationships (and interpersonal conflicts) than they do with depicting straight-up actiony plot conflicts, which is probably why the reception to this episode was so mixed. That said, I think that this episode set us up nicely for some Big Events next week, and I for one can't wait.

Oh! One more thing. I've always felt a little out of the loop on the Shi-kyung love train. I think he's great, don't get me wrong, but he always struck me as a more straightforward kdrama archetype--the Strong and Silent Noble Type, the Devoted Soldier, etc. I'm not saying that other characters in this drama aren't similarly archetypal, but I just haven't gotten as much depth from Shi-kyung as I have from the other characters. However, this week Earnest Bot knocked it OUT. OF. THE. PARK. He gave me chills when he clenched his fists and restrained himself in spite of Choco-drugs-goth-assasin's taunting, and his confrontation with Bong-gu was just ELECTRIC. I ADORED the moment that Bong-gu realized "oh, shit, this kid's got balls of steel--was he really sprung from the loins of that sniveling coward Eun?!" So. Satisfying.

So basically, what I'm saying is: Shi-kyung, I've got some fresh cookies here for you. I'll even hand-feed them to you...

@ rearwindow:
while Jae-ha is super sharp and a great strategist, Hang-ah has a ton of practical knowledge and is not as blinded by pride/comfort/personal attachments as Jae-ha is.

Can't putting it into any better word than this. Jae Ha has the IQ, but that's Hang Ah who has the experiences, yes, it's more than Brain vs. Brawn, but as a wholesome.

For Shi Kyung, he is awesomely badass in this episode, and as GF said: I love how this drama let the secondary character shine. Each of gesture is telling, do you notice his temporal muscle twitching when Bon Bon provoke him with telling now she research about fear? And how he grit his teeth slightly when Bon Bon mock the Princess?
When he said 'Your mother death', it feels like a real bomb, he whom usually keep his calm demeanor finally throwing insult to someone. That just...wow!

Enough said, I love Eun Shi Kyung more and more after this.

Yeah, Jo Jung Suk did an INCREDIBLE job in that scene with choco-psycho and Bong-gu. You could tell he wanted to rip her to shreds but restrained himself. His physicality and his eyes totally sold the moment--he was just as badass as Jae-ha in facing Bong-gu, except with his own spin on "badassery." He totally won me over as a fangirl in that moment.

I also read that he's the goofiest person on set when he's not in character, which makes me love him even more. He's totally selling the serious, earnest character. Love him.

Yes, he is the goofiest person on the set. If you peek his tweet, you'll find that he is really goofy. It's kinda cute though. In what's up, he is sold as a goofy character, thus I'm surprised with his totally serious character in TK2H.
He is a real scene stealer, can't forget eachgesture and his eyes, even a tiny smile of him! OH!

Interesting it is, that we found the best quality of our MEN when they are facing the real enemy, and it's not the climax yet. I can't wait for the next episode.

I have this secret fangirly desire for him and Ha Ji-won to start dating--in real life, not on the show. I mean, I love her and Seung-gi, but she and JJS both seem like such hard-working, awesome, cheery people. And wouldn't they be a gorgeous couple?

/end fangirlyness (until my next comment, haha)

Also, good point about the best of the characters coming out when they face Bong-gu. These writers are just awesome at creating tense, nail-biting conflicts in which our heros can shine, aren't they?

0

Also, where can I read his tweets? Are they translated into English?

0

His account is @jojeol, I'm using google translate to read it...or asking someone who can read (and understand) hangul to translate it for me^^

0

Awesome, thank you reglest!!

0

@rearwindow
SeungGi in real life is hard-working, awesome and cheery to the max! He is the most perfect person I ever know of in my life!... Just to point this out~

0

@Jia Min: Oh, I know--Seung-gi is amazing and seems incredibly good natured. Apparently I like playing celebrity matchmaker in my spare time, so if the age difference b/t LSG and HJW is too big for them to overcome, JJS is a miiighty eligible bachelor for HJW to consider.

Anyway, this is all theoretical and ridiculous, since I don't actually know any of these people. Sometimes my imagination just runs away with me, haha.

0

@rearwindow: One of the worst things in actuality is to fall in love with these down-to-earth actors and etch out their love life. pfffft. The delusional me wants Seung-gi to date a non-celebrity (wouldn't mind Ji-won but don't think it'll be feasible :/).

0

@saima:
Screw me, but I have the same thinking that Seung Gi will date non-celebrity as well

0

I also agree the Lee Seung Gi will also end up with a non-celebrity. I'd be surprised otherwise.

0

Rearwindow, i really like all you've got to say.
A well-thought out comment..
There were many points specifically i definitely nod my head to, but i'm too tired to specify.
But seriously, your comment is probably one of the most in-tune with my thoughts on this episode.
THANK YOU for pointing out that kang seok did overreact in the bathroom stall, and majority of the u.s. was fine with the apology and willing to apologize, so it's not like the the u.s. were the only ones who were wrong.
Just think of them as being ignorant soldiers that we need not get mad over the writers for, because we also have to keep in mind translation gets lost in between languages.. Not to mention this seems like a reality in military-world, according to some people who have had experience.
The reason we're all ON it with this drama is because it's got us emotional invested to the nth degree...Kudos.

Thanks, mangos! I agree, we're all super invested in this drama because it's so captivating! I love that a drama can inspire this level of dialogue and analysis. K2H is truly an inspiration.

Couldn't agree more with you on everything. When Jae-ha goes off on his rant (how funny was that!) and then suggested that they negotiate with the US team but then decided against it since "what could we possibly give them since they have everything!!" HAAA!! I thought this was a nice touch by the writers to balance out the negative dialogue!

More importantly I LOVE our OTP! They are soo resplendent with the commitment and faith that they have in each other. "You believe in me......and, I'll believe in you" Was I the only one who turned to mush?! Not only do they bring unique qualities to their rel'p but the dynamics w/in their rel'p changes as well.

Lastly, nothing's hotter than a guy who uses his brains to out-wit his opponents!

No, you weren't the only one who turned into mush. Their relationship has so much give-and-take, and the way they balance each other out...it just feels so real.

Also? "Nothing’s hotter than a guy who uses his brains to out-wit his opponents!"

100% agree with you there. There's nothing hotter than brains and talent. Mmmm...

JJS had such nice things to say about LSG in his interview and was so appreciative and in awe of the food and gifts prepared by Seung Gi's fan clubs. For that, I am totally charmed by him and will support him in his future work.

Love their bromance in the drama (so cute together) and love both of them. LSG and JJS fighting !

Is it Wednesday yet..? This is the first time I am wishing the weekend will pass quickly.

I saw that video of the fancam and can i just say Seung gi, you are so bold?!
I mean he swooped in SO fast, taking controlling.
LOOK at their body language.
seriously he may have played boy-next-door images in his previous..
But the fact that he's so natural at it makes me wonder whether or not he is as inexperienced as he says...
*swoons.
i swear to god the second i see those hands wrap around her body. That scene will be on replay for me.
JUST IMAGINE HIM IN ACTION WHEN THE LIGHT GOES OUT.
LOL.

For me it's the gif.
I think my heart beats randomly and skip many beats looking at it. Seeing the same scene again and again is too much for my heart. It's not good for my heart. The kiss and seung gi's hands.

lol. same thing happened to me! oh it's also not good for my brain... mine is kinda foggy every time I see those things: the kiss and his manly and veiny hands. it just stopped working normally... ;p

K-ent 101: Do NOT believe these actors/singers when they say that they aren't in a rel'p or haven't been in one in an age, etc!

It's not me being cynical but the fans can be kinda crazy possessive for their oppas. For instance, when singer Se7en was found out that he was in a rel'p for 7ish years 100,000 fans left his official fan club. So, I GET. IT. as to the reason they lie.

Koala at the playground mentioned that Seung-gi's a lot more experienced than he lets on!! When I read it I totally fist-pumped the air, heh! Think about it: he says he's been in 2 rel'ps prior to his debut (18 Korean age)...so one can only imagine since then... =)

@saima:
LOL, pretty sad if it's real, yunno about he only engaged in relation ship twice, and all before his debut (deny to believe it).

Wanna share one interesting facts, I giggle every time I remember this.
Do you know the history of his first kiss? ㅋㅋㅋ~ His first kiss was with her 1st GF, in front of her house, when he escort her home. I should say, Seung Gi is pretty bold since start :p

Sad that some girls would stop being fans of Se7en just because he was being a normal person trying to find happiness and love with a significant other. It's a disturbing phenomenon that needs to end.

Agree. I still love Brad Pitt regardless of who he is with. There is always hope!

0

Would be happy for him if that's true. And he did say at his fan-meeting that he wants to date in secret. Poor GF though.

I think it's sad that so many stars, especially in Asia, hide their relationships to keep their fan base. Reminds me of Andy Lau who only acknowledged his relationship after the death of his father-in-law.

Perhaps Se7en's fans were more upset by the fact that he lied to them?

Based on the video of his fanmeeting (comment #151.1.1), IMO, he's joking about wanting to date someone secretly.

Aw, i really like how seung gi is able to work with so many men on the set and learn from them.
they look like they're having loads of fun.
seung gi is probably super happy right now, working with such a large group of guys for once.
that's why i warmly embrace the WOC.
