Beanie level: Noble idiot

Do any gardening or gastronomic beanies know if you can use horseradish instead of wasabi? We have a forest of horseradish here and the only recipe I know is for horseradish sauce with roast beef.

Horseradish and roast beef sound so good right now. Mmmm…yummy. And none of that watered down crap – I want to feel the burn!

As for your actual question, I think the answer is yes. Doing some research it seems, at lest in the US, that our “wasabi” is actually missing the wasabi root and is just horseradish with green dye. Haha. There were lots of websites discussing using one in place of the other. Other possible substitutes, and depending on the taste you are goin for, included mustard or fresh ginger. https://www.leaf.tv/articles/how-to-substitute-for-horseradish/

Thanks @umbrellaman There is a whole corner of the stuff in the veg plot so if we can use it or preserve it in some way that’s great.

Is this a basket? It looks too big.. Or is it like nest-chair kinda thing?
And I always wanted to ask… Is basket making a hobby or work?

It’s a sphere. Basketball size -roughly. It’s ornamental and we had them with Christmas lights one year. The woman who taught me makes large spheres which stand on the ground, also birds and animals. They’re fun. A chair would be good though I haven’t attempted anything like that. I’m still learning so it’s a hobby to work transition in progress. We’ve been planting our own willow beds so we will have plenty of choice and to save on the cost of buying in.

This really would look beautiful at night with twinkling lights in them!
Sounds so interesting! and definitely something I would like to try once!
Which part of the world are you from? In my country, it would be hard to make a living out of handicrafts.. Not impossible but definitely difficult!

I quit 1994 tbh. Couldn’t make it past ep 3. But 1997 and 1988 were great!

Hahaha. This picture was from the recap so I’ll probably go and watch this bit again. It looks like it might be an old one because it’s a bit damaged. The weave is different from the baskets I make and from his hat in the earlier picture.

Ran out of space to reply down there. If you’ve got a basket to copy you can work out what material was used and the method so yes you can replicate it. We’re still learning so we can’t do everything perfectly yet (oval is harder than round). However like most things the more you practice the better you get. Did you see the photo I posted of the basket on the garden chair? I really like using that willow. It’s called Dicky Meadows.

Yeah. We’re good. Really busy in the garden though and getting organised to make some more baskets this week as there is an event on in the village next Saturday. We have to soak the basket willow for a number of days so that it is flexible and doesn’t break.

It was probably better for my brother as I didn’t really want to eat the crisps much and I was working at night! But I’m sure we did do some of this.

I spent 7 and a half weeks packing crisps on a night shift then went to Spain for a month with a friend who was studying the pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostella.
