Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #4

javabeans: So here we are with the last giveaway in our five-year anniversary extravaganza! Phew, I’m tired. All this organizing is exhausting. Next year Dramabeans is just gonna have to deal with a store cake and a third-rate magician.

girlfriday: Just no clowns. That’s no way to spend a birthday.

javabeans: Now I know how Santa feels. Well, maybe without the drunk crazy.

girlfriday: Maybe this is why he drinks.

javabeans: Who knew it was work giving stuff away?

girlfriday: Well I’m inherently selfish, so not me. But it WAS really cool to read everyone’s thank you’s to our hard-working contributors and guesties. Thanks for giving them so much love!

javabeans: Yes. It makes us feel better for loading them down with recaps. What, this recap factory doesn’t run on unicorn dust and fangirl dreams, you know.

girlfriday: No, it runs on the blood sweat and tears of the few willing to be paid in Dramabeans Dollars, aka Abs Photos of the Day.

javabeans: Anyway, this is our last giveaway to celebrate our fifth birthday, which means this is your last chance to enter to win a birthday giveaway prize!

girlfriday: For the last big hurrah, we’re giving away a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, so you can watch dramas, listen to kpop, and read Dramabeans wherever you go! If you end up in rehab because of it, we will disavow all knowledge of enabling your habit.

javabeans: Enter at your own peril.

And now, for our winners. Congratulations to…

  • Jules (aka snoozit), winner of a one-year premium subscription to Dramafever,
  • Missyu_who, winner of the other premium subscription to Dramafever,
  • and Carinne, winner of the iPod nano (with javabeans playlist).

One thing i really want to see here in DB is MOVIE REVIEWS!!! I really want to know your opinions and takes on old and recent movies alike. Also, MORE PODCASTS!! You know, like weekly! or daily! Hee. Seriously, there's something about your voices and the way you talk that tickles me and makes me smile all the time esp. when i heard your podcast about city hunter and you were drunk and you were just laughing and laughing and laughing three-fourths of the time. Keep up the awesome work DB!! I love this site more than i love my family. and Big Bang. Seriously.

I second Nanali! Vampire Idol! Plus, I love variety shows too. Often times, dramabeans recaps are a bit funnier than the actual show. O! If they made their recaps in audio form, then I could watch the show with them in the background, like a sort of director's cut! I know, I'm reaching here...

i love what you're doing i mean when i'm in the middle of the lessons at university and the teacher start with some weird math i can always read some drama recaps and it is really fantastic because there are a lot of screenshot (i mean keep always a lot of photo ... ahaha and abs photo XD) and your way of writing is really funny mmm a drama-lovers-way so i really enjoy myself ... yeah i'd like to have also some movie recaps it would be nice .
i also love the news of the upcoming drama and the cast decision i need it to organise what i'm going to watche so keep doing it !!! thanks and well i love you podcast! i'm not from an english-speaker-country so listening to it is also a exercise and also is a way to hear that i'm not the only perverted girl to like drama-boys and their abs XD so i think that dramabeans has everything (may be some film recap) so just keep going on for a long long long time !!^W^

I didn't read all the other comments, so I hope I'm not duplicating.

First off, I couldn't survive KDramaland without this site. It's a life saver!

Secondly, if I could request anything, it would be two things:

1. Where can we find the OSTs to the dramas? I know we can torrent them, but as the mother of a musician who has lost thousands because of torrents, I'd like to honestly buy the music. iTunes rarely has the stuff I'm interested in.

2. Suggestions on the best places to watch the dramas. I'm sure there are many newbies floundering around and would love some direction as to where to find good sites. It took me quite a while to find my favorite sites. I would have loved a list...

Thanks so much!

ps - if someone could explain the Korean rating system for movies I'd much appreciate it. (is there a rating system?)

I'd try Yesasia, or ebay...I think that'd be about the only places you could get legal copies. But, the problem is, a lot of the OST tracks are released as digital albums...and you'd need a korean itunes account for them.

Surprisingly, iTunes has a decent number of OSTs and they add more and even back catalog OSTs fairly often now. I was happily astonished to find the Shin Don OST on there one day. Like much of the Korean music on iTunes, it is often misfiled, but there are some there.

If you happen to live near a Aladdin Korean bookstore or any other Korean bookstore or a Korean neighborhood that has something like an H-mart, they all stock OST CDs, but often a little randomly.

On line, yesAsia and Amazon (oddly enough) often have them. Failing that, and if you are desperate, with a little trouble and learning to navigate their websites in Korean, you can also get a Japanese or Korean music store to ship to you (which costs $$) cdJapan, for instance, has a huge stock of Korean music CDs, and often they have stuff in stock that yesAsia or Amazon doesn't, but often those are in the premium packaging versions with DVDs (usually not in a US region version) and they cost $$. And of course, if all else fails, you can hope to find a friend in Japan or Korea or traveling there who will pick it up for you. 8-)

As always, thanks for the site!

Someone mentioned more old dramas, and I have a similar request...I'd love to see more old/never subbed in eng/rare/and family dramas. As a non-korean speaker, it's a great way to find out about dramas I otherwise would have no idea about.

For instance, your recap on Ojakgyo Brothers was so great, I started it...and watched 20 episodes this weekend ^^;; ha ha. I'd never heard of the drama until I saw it here! I'd also love to see more "first epsiodes" on dramas you AREN'T planning on re-capping - even if it's half the size of a normal recap, or just a few paragraphs....

Love the site, and the recaps! thanks!

But if there is one thing, it'll be like having a poll where the readers can pick the kdrama they want to read recaps of? Or maybe go beyond kdramas! (:
Whatever you guys decide to do, I'll always be reading your awesome recaps! ^______^♥

I love this site, and I don't know if I could take anymore good stuff! I thought of movie reviews and the variety roulette, and the audio recaps (what a riot), but frankly, I actually do not really want you to do more. If you did, I would be on this site more, and I would never get any work done. As it is, I should be doing lesson plans right now, but instead I am posting even though I do not have a chance in hell of winning! GAH!. However, if I did win, I believe I would lose weight because it would then allow me to watch k-drama while on the elliptical trainer!! Can you imagine? You could start shilling the k-drama addiction exercise plan. I can see it now--"Turn your k-drama addiction into k-drama training! Instead of cursing at the screen every time there is a wrist grad or an impossibly quick taxi arrival--go faster on the treadmill." Since watching k-drama makes me want to eat anyway, I need the opposite effect as well.

Love to see a few things:

* Perhaps you can both go on a trip to Korea, go on a bit of tour and update us on any crazy stories. Maybe pretend to be paparazzi for a day following a celebrity scandal and tell us if reporters really swarm outside someone's houses like in the dramas. lol.

* It'd be totally and completely awesome if you taught korean online. Not likely, but it'd be so cool.

* More of the crazy drama-obsession stories

* If you guys made up your own drama and just post up each episode as though it were a recap, complete with screen-shots - from other dramas - XD

* Movie reviews, interviews with celebs

* If during drama recaps, post up info on each character at the beginning of the recap -- like, one character every recap...if the character changes, more information added. Just to keep track of the character's development.

I can't think of anything else but just wanted to say, thank you Dramabeans for making me feel like drama addiction is in no way a bad thing no matter what my family says :)

wish to have more news about the actors and actresses in korea! :) And to have more recaps. I noticed that the news about some artists were not included in this site. But among all the sites i've encountered this site keeps me coming back. :) Keeps me loving korean dramas more and more.

I can't think of anything else! this site is simply perfect. Always browse it whenever i open my desktop, Can't watch because of school but I am always updated because of DB. This sounds crazy but I am totally addicted to DB! keep it up! We'll always support. And hope the loading will take a little faster. :) love lots!

INTERVIEWS. One example is the recent interview with Yeo jingoo and Lee minho that you posted. I love reading those, I love to read about the actors' thoughts on their projects and other things. Other korean entertainment news sites sometimes report little tidbits about these actor interviews but it's not all long and organized like how dramabeans does it. And you translate more accurately too. Well how would I know that?, I don't speak Korean. Still, somehow I just think you do because you speak korean, and actually sometimes it's not that hard to sense something a little off about the way other news sources translate. These interviews are always enjoyable to read. Or or or when those news programs go on the set of a drama and interview the actors, you could post that vid with an article highlighting interesting points, like an actor's answer to an interesting question or something like that. I watch these behind-the-scene videos all the time and they'd have the actors talking to the camera but no one ever subs these videos seriously T__T. anyway, yes, that's what I would love to see on dramabeans.

2011 was great! In face dramabeans has been awesome. What I would like to see in 2012 in a chat window, like the size of the dramafever add or something. We have become such a tight family on this site that some real time chatting would be awesome since we seem to know everyone's username already.

I think that would make the open friday thread even bigger! and would also make replying to responses much smoother and faster.

Happy five years!! :)

I'm quite happy with the site as it is and I think it's better to stay focused and keep the quality than to do too much...

...but if I could, I would wish for:

* more regular podcasts (I really love listening to you!)

* more "first impressions"

* time to time an actor review (not so much about facts, but more in what you saw him/her, how (s)he grew and your comments)

* An old year review, like 1994

Love your site and hope your enthusiasm and wit keeps it for many years more!

I love it when you give us tips about lesser known series. From 9 End 2 Outs to Padam Padam, I've discovered a lot of really great shows I would have probably never watched if it wasn't for you. And I love the whole "halftime report"-thing you've been doing, great way to get to cover more shows even though you can't recap it all.

Hmmmm because I am greedy hehe I'd love to see more drama recaps. I just absolutely love reading all your drama recaps so much, sometimes even more then watching the drama itself. You guys never fail to make me giggle and laugh out loud with your witty comments. Otherwise perhaps a hottie of the week segment filled with some more delicious ab pics or shower scenes ;P

Your site rocks though an I'd be happy if it stayed the same :D One of the first sites I always log onto as soon as I get online.

hi. i got addicted to k dramas last year. and the way i select a new drama to watch is when it gets referred to in some post. like when someone in a post on best love commented that the lead actress had better chemistry in the drama pasta, i chose to dedicate my weekend to watching pasta (liked it!). so can you run a series on actors and actresses and their top 5 work (or top 3 .shouldn't be greedy.) which any self respecting k drama fan should have watched.

I don't really watch korean movies (since I don't know what movies are worthwhile) so I thought it would be nice if you can do a few movie reviews/recaps each month, or designate a day in the week for movie review night. In addition, it would be great if you guys can do a year end ratings of your top and worst movies. If not, then how about updating us with more korean entertainment news? Anyway, thanks for recapping and updating us with new things every day.

Hi, I don't comment a lot. I need the time for dramas :) But I love your recaps and the insight that you have given to me on Korean culture.

Two things that I would like to see are an occasional thread that is specifically dedicated to non-recappers posting a review of a show that they have liked that doesn't get recapped. This would be separate from the open thread so that it would hopefully be easier to scroll through and read reviews without the comments.

Second thing is based off of the posts that you have done about language. I would love to read about Korean culture, food, music and even some of the social upheavals that are happening in Korean from the witty layman approach.

Thank you again

I would like to see Actor Profiles--Dramabeans style. I'm not talking about something like IMDb, a Dramabeans Database would take out all the fun from writing and reading the recaps and other articles! But at least something like a Top 10 Actors and Actresses list. (Maybe with like Adult--no, not that kind--and Young Actors' categories.)

You can write them in classic Dramabeans' humor, just like how you went creative with the rate-meters for the 2011 Year-End Reviews. I loved those.

Your giveaways are awesome. Dramabeans is definitely one of the highlights of my 2011, and undoubtedly, of my 2012!

That would be awesome - focus on your favorite actor or actress, and comment on their progression through the years, up moments and down.
I'd recommend doing it during the downtime, but there is no off-season/rerun time for korean dramas, is there?

How about some mobile apps for iPhone and Android? More than a RSS reader, you could do better search and filtering options, save/share favorite posts and, if looking at a recap, jump to the next/previous episode easily. Those are just some ideas--there are a lot of possibilities!

but in line with the question I would really appreciate it if you guys would feature more movies and also more variety shows 'cause there are some really cool variety shows out there and it would be really fun if those could be included up in here like RM and 1N2D..

more power to DB.. this site really is the BOMB! I really can't go on a day without checking in here.. that is how DB is such an integral part of my daily online life ^_^

As an avid reader, I will quite honestly have to say the dramabeans is almost perfect. I have been reading since javabeans Wordpress days and it's always gotten better year by year. I've even developed a tendency to read the recaps before watching the actual show because I hate surprises.

how can you improve on perfect? I say, go on more funny stuff and maybe make memes, or funny captions on screen caps because seriously the recaps are SO funny and I wish there was a visual aspect!

Answer:

You've done a great job so far and enjoying your recaps and dramanews has been a complete joy and absolute excitement I look forward to every day sth new comes up! Thank you for being so awesome and explicit - I mean, I love it how you concentrate even on the smalles things in the drama and add some pics and your honest opinion, cause seriously, no need to praise a drama, when it's not worth it. *pouts* LOL

But as for 2012, I believe there will be very many new and awesome dramas airing, so I'd be very grateful to you if you could either recap more of them on your own or perhaps recruit more people, so that your horny readers would get the chance to see a perfectly cute, honest and long recap of every worthy drama and movie of 2012.

Perhaps some animated gifs of a scene that was very funny, worth remembering or simply unique would be a good addition to the site, so that the people, who might not be able to get their hands on the drama/movie itself, could oogle on the moving scene and hot guys(*Dream High* LOL) in your recap. *winks*

Just keep on working as hard as you have for now and I'm not very sure whether you can improve this awesomeness the way it already is. *hugs you tight* I love the layout, your recaps, the way you write, the way you love and tease your readers and well... it's just eevrything and so much more I could ask from this english site!

Thank you for feeding my Asian addiction. *blushes and bows*

My beloved greetings and never-ending support,

Kelly

Your recaps are delightful, and the amount of time you folks spend on it might make you eligible for sainthood, but even saints are human, and you have limitations.

I wish there was some way for the community to vote on current dramas and to list all time favorites. The Open Thread is a good way to pick up new ideas, but it's a lot to weed through. I stalk the top lists on other sites, but they're usually dominated by the cult classics, like YAB or BoF.

Honestly, I have no idea how to work out something like that, but I know the community would love to take some of the heat off you guys to do EVERYTHING.

Oh man, this is pretty easy.

1.) Celebrity Interviews. I know this would be pretty darn hard to get but I think it would be amazing.

2.) Mobile App. The idea of being able to carry this site in my pocket as an application makes me dance with glee. I practically stalk this site and it is hard to do at work. An App would just make it so much easier.

The final (and most important) thing I want is going to be pretty hard to get but I think if you guys worked really really really hard it would be possible.

3.) A Marriage Proposal from Kim Bum to Me.
