You From Another Star: Episode 13

Only one episode this week! To mitigate the withdrawal shakes I’m sure many of us will be feeling tomorrow, we can take comfort in hearing that the show is (expectedly) considering the one-episode extension to even out the broadcast schedule. I would even suggest that they need not add more story or draw out existing conflicts—an episode of epilogues would do me just fine. Fanservice, skinship, cuddly times? All reasonable ideas for an Episode 21. Totally. Yup.

RECAP: THIRTEENTH RECORD

Min-joon interviews that when he first came to Earth, he wanted to help people with his powers, even if it meant revealing that he was different. A flashback takes us to Joseon when a man is trapped underneath a boulder begging for help, and Min-joon uses his powers to levitate the boulder off his leg.

Instead of gratitude, all that earns him is a mob bearing literal torches and pitchforks, ready to hunt down the monster. Wearing a sad, resigned look on his face, Min-joon vanishes into thin air, leaving them even more spooked.

He explains that he becomes a source of fear even with long-established friends, as we see when Min-joon’s best friend pesters him to share his reasons for leaving, probably on the eve of another identity wipe. The buddy declares with conviction that over ten years of friendship, he has utter faith in him.

Min-joon confides that he’s from a different planet, and upon the friend’s request for proof, he floats a book into the air. The friend flinches away from Min-joon and tears off screaming for help, leaving Min-joon hurt. The lesson? “If I don’t want to lose somebody, I would have to hide my identity carefully.”

So in his interview, Min-joon admits that he revealed his identity to Song-yi in order to lose her, wanting to frighten her into leaving. Thus we resume their scene at the museum from Episode 12.

Min-joon shatters the glass case and advances on Song-yi, who backs away from him slowly. “You said you didn’t care who I was,” he says. “This is who I am. Do you still not care?” He adds that he could decide to kill her off at any moment: “So run while you can. Leave!

But instead, Song-yi reaches for his hand. Aw, I love that she needs to hold onto something while her world tilts, and unconsciously she seeks stability in him, even if he’s the cause for the chaos in the first place. She asks why he went to such lengths to save her if he’s so dangerous. Coldly, he answers that it’s only because she resembled the other girl and he’d wondered if they were connected somehow. But if she is only Song-yi, “I’m not interested in what happens to you.” Shaking off her hand, he stalks out.

Song-yi tries to process his information and mutters to herself that he’s ridiculous… but has second thoughts as she recalls all the times he swooped in to save her life. When she finally exits the museum in a daze, Min-joon watches from a distance. Her heel gets stuck in a crack, and as she pulls off the shoe, she glares up at the stars and yells, “You’re from another star? You’re an alien? If you’re an alien, then I’m a vampire! I haven’t aged since I was twenty, I have the same face and same skin—everyone says so!” HAHA. (Jeon Ji-hyun’s amazing non-transformation over the past decade and half has been in all the headlines of the past week.)

In his office, Jae-kyung wonders aloud how the prosecutor found out about his connection to Yura, deducing that Song-yi was the only one who knew. He’s muttering in his maniacal way, but tonight he seems extra unhinged, and then he glares at the person in front of him and accuses, “It’s your fault she knows in the first place.”

It’s… Yura? Is she a ghost, or is he finally going crazy? (I mean, he was pretty much already crazy, but based on the wild-eyed Shakespearean soliloquy I figure he’s close to breaking past his shell of sanity.) Now that she’s dead, Yura finally sees Jae-kyung for who he is (better late than never?) and asks sneeringly if he really thinks he can cover up all his crimes.

Jae-kyung ponders the interesting stranger with unusual powers, finding Min-joon both fascinating and aggravating. He can’t beat Min-joon in a frontal attack, but he does know of Min-joon’s one weakness: Song-yi. That’ll be his trump card in this game.

Yura says in disgust, “You’d play a game with a person’s love for someone else?” Jae-kyung merely answers, “Yeah. You lost too, in that game.”

Yura spirit leaves (or Jae-kyung’s hallucination fades, potayto-potahto), and he murmurs to himself, “I want to see you guys for a long time. But why do you mess with me?” (Why do you make me hit you, indeed.)

In the morning, the museum discovers its shattered case, but ultimately is not too worried because nothing was taken. The director is more excited about getting a lead on who the museum’s mystery donor may have been, having dug up a photo of university supporters dating to 1914. Perhaps one of the men pictured is their anonymous benefactor, who popped up over the years to give generous amounts of money in times of difficulty. An employee suggests releasing this photo in conjunction with the school’s hundred-year anniversary, and a glance at the faded black-and-white photograph confirms that yup, Min-joon is there, looking exactly the same.

Min-joon fills Lawyer Jang in on last night’s events, and Lawyer Jang clucks that he didn’t have to go that far in outing the truth to Song-yi; he could have just cut off contact quietly. Lawyer Jang sighs that it would be nice if Min-joon could wipe memories like those aliens in the movies (ha, MiB), even pressing, “Are you sure you can’t?” Min-joon huffs his no.

The dilemma is weighing heavy on Min-joon’s mind, of being unable to stay behind with Song-yi or take her with him. The only thing he can do is disappear, he says, and enable her to at least live a good life after he’s gone. Lawyer Jang doesn’t quite follow his logic, but we know he’s thinking of his deal with the devil. In flashback, we revisit the scene where he offers to shoulder the blame for Jae-kyung’s crimes, in exchange for leaving Song-yi alone.

Song-yi still can’t wrap her head around Min-joon’s news, and confides in Bok-ja after making her promise not to breathe a word of it to anyone (replete with specialized pinky-swear, hand-slap, shoulder-wriggle, fist-pump sequence).

Bok-ja immediately laughs off the alien story, assuming it’s just one in a long list of crap excuses men make to blow off women. Her own first love confession was met with a “Sorry, I have to go to the army,” which was, of course, soon proven false. Another time, a guy swore he was possessed by spirits and had decided to be a shaman, then promptly got married in a church.

Song-yi considers that Min-joon may have lied, though she can’t quite reconcile the lie with all those strange incidents involving him. Bok-ja notes that Song-yi must’ve been really clingy for him to resort to that extreme a story… or maybe he’s mentally unbalanced.

Song-yi bolts up and decides she has to get harder proof. She takes a hike up to the cliffside where her car lost control, plants herself on the edge, and shouts, “Do Min-jooooooon! I’m in daaaaaanger! Come save meeeeee!” LOL.

Of course, it happens to be broad daylight and there are plenty of hikers around, who write her off as a lunatic. Her screams get no response, so she takes that as evidence of his lack of alien powers.

Next she walks into his classroom and sits through his lecture, intercepting him at the exit. She dares him to use his alien powers to leave the room, pestering, “You’re not, right? You’re not an alien!” Min-joon all but rolls his eyes and pushes past her, exiting in wholly human fashion.

She walks out of the building right at his side, drawing stares and whispers. “Fly,” she prods. “Or do you need your Superman clothes to fly?” Her pettiness cracks me up, as she counters his irritation with jabs like “Are you really annoyed? Do you think I’m joking and that irritates you? Well that’s exactly how you made ME feel!”

She warns him not to leave her, threatening to shout that he’s an alien if he does. Min-joon clenches his jaw and growls her name, but she chirps his own words back at him: “Why, did you trust me? You warned me so nicely not to trust you, so why would you trust me?” She threatens to alert the presses and the Blue House and NASA and tell them all about the alien, and demands the price for her silence: Have dinner with her. Haha.

Having won that battle, Song-yi points out that she gets to pick where, which results in a loooong drive to the beach. At dinner, Song-yi barrages Min-joon with increasingly absurd questions: Do aliens eat food? Do they recharge with electricity? Do they have a different body under that skin? Is their blood blue?

As they walk on the shore after dinner, Song-yi asks about Min-joon’s comment from early in their acquaintanceship, when he’d said there was no way Song-yi could be “her.” He confirms that he’d been referring to the girl with the hairpin, and Song-yi mulls this over, supposing the other woman must’ve been pretty if she looked like her. But was that really the only reason he was interested in Song-yi?

He answers yes, that he’d confused their resemblance for more, but realized at some point that Song-yi wasn’t Yi-hwa. And if he’d liked Song-yi on her own merits, he should have been able to feel something for her after realizing this… but he didn’t.

Song-yi presses for more: “You didn’t like me for one moment? You never once felt your heart flutter because of me? You never sincerely worried about me, not once? You never liked me just for me, without connection to that girl? You’ve never thought of a future with me?”

Her questions make Min-joon think of all the examples that belie his words—of taking care of her, of saving her life, of dreaming of being with her in a blissful future. But he hardens his voice to answer no, a little incredulous that she cares more about him liking her than the whole alien bit.

Song-yi replies, “To me, that’s a hundred, thousand times more important. Whether you’re an alien from another planet or a vampire or a monster or whatever your past is, it’s how the man I like—no, the man I liked—thinks of me that’s most important.”

Well, knock him down with a feather. But to Song-yi, this is all such obvious stuff, that none of that other stuff makes any difference when he’s the man she cared about. “I liked you, truly,” she says. “But if you saw me in place of another woman, you’re the worst. And if I know that and like you anyway, then I’m the worst. So I’ll get over my feelings.”

He tells her that’s the right choice, and she turns away and reverts to formal speech, apologizing for bothering him all this while and promising not to do so anymore. And if she weakens and calls him, he should cut her off.

The ride home is cold and silent, and Song-yi feigns sleep until the instant he pulls into the parking spot. She studiously ignores him and goes home without a second look in his direction, while Min-joon keeps sneaking sidelong glances her way.

Min-joon’s next lecture is on the five stages of overcoming grief, with Song-yi living out each of the stages in turn. The anger stage has Song-yi beating up her pillows, furious at Min-joon for saying he never once liked her. Denial has Song-yi scoffing at his alien explanation and hunting through her apartment for joke hidden cameras.

In the bargaining stage, Song-yi tries to convince herself that Min-joon wasn’t her type anyway, all old-fashioned and stuffy and probably a crazy alien to boot. Moving on to depression, she finds herself unexpectedly crying over dinner. Surprised at herself, she insists, “This isn’t crying. It’s just tears forming in my eyes. It’s not crying.”

Last is acceptance, where she vows to get even prettier (“Yes, I’m already incredibly pretty, but I’ll get insanely prettier!”) to show him and make him regret it.

Min-joon explains that there are gender differences in how men and women apply this to their romantic lives, as women frequently vow to improve themselves or meet a better match, while guys… well, they’re worse off. Cut to: Min-joon refusing to eat, completely depressed. Aw.

Lawyer Jang reports that Min-joon’s apartment will sell after all, despite those strange rumors circulating about it, and tells him the buyer is on his way over to take a look. Mention of a young rich man who jumped at the chance probably gives Min-joon an idea of who this could be… and sure enough, the guest at his door turns out to be Hwi-kyung.

Immediately, Min-joon tells Lawyer Jang to cancel the deal; he’ll return the deposit plus more. Hwi-kyung doubles his offer on the spot, only to have Min-joon tell him flatly, “I won’t sell to you.” Pfft. Min-joon shuts the door in his face and is so worked up that he shatters a mug in his hand without realizing it. Then his super-hearing hones in on the voices next door, as Song-yi approves of Hwi-kyung’s wishes to buy the place, and he spills water everywhere.

In interview mode, Min-joon explains a saying about missing someone so much your heart is buried in dust. He sniffs that this is the complete opposite case, with barely a speck of dust to be found: “Is getting over your feelings like cleaning a room? So fast?” Ha, he’s peevish at Song-yi for not being more heartbroken, is he? He insists that he’s relieved that Song-yi’s gotten over him so quickly, and insists, “I said I’m really not upset!”

Song-yi tells Hwi-kyung of the film offer she just received, looking at it optimistically even though it’s a supporting role. The character’s got a mean temper (Hwi-kyung: “That’s perfect for you!” Song-yi: “Right? I won’t even have to act”) and she’s happy to take a strong character that isn’t like all those samey-same heroines (“they’re all bright, nice, and righteous”).

Min-joon is still listening when she tells Hwi-kyung about the detective dropping by to ask about Yura, and whether she was dating Min-joon. Now she confesses that she knows the truth, and shares that Yura was dating Jae-kyung, and that she told the cop that info.

The investigators are hard at work tracking down neighborhood security cameras, hoping to spot Yura and Jae-kyung together. Jae-kyung watches them from his car, feeling the pinch, and sends Min-joon a text to hurry up their deal: He has three days to make good.

The investigators make a breakthrough when they find a coincidence in Jae-kyung’s and Yura’s cell phone records. During one stretch of vacation, Jae-kyung’s calls all originated from a particular region (where the family villa is)—and over the same span of days, so did Yura’s. Now they can narrow their search to that location during those dates.

Hwi-kyung acts on his own hunch and invents an excuse to slip inside his brother’s car. He looks through the GPS log, and finds the location of a particular mental hospital. Bingo.

Full of thoughts of her doppelganger, Song-yi returns to the museum and asks about the hairpin, which has been moved in the wake of its shattered case. The docent can’t answer her inquiry into the hairpin owner’s identity, but that doesn’t stop Song-yi from pelting him with additional questions: How old was she? Was she married or single? Was she pretty? Ha.

The 100-year anniversary exhibit is underway, and Song-yi pauses at the photo of the university’s early supporters. Immediately recognizing Min-joon from the 1914 photo, she recalls his outlandish claims of living for hundreds of years, and then goes out of her way to block the picture from other people’s eyes, plastering herself against the glass so that nobody can look at it. Cute.

Song-yi wrestles with the question of whether to inform Min-joon about that photo. He catches her on the door monitor pacing in front of his door, changing her mind a dozen times, and finally heads out himself. She scrambles out of view and leaves a Post-It on his door informing him to check out the museum photograph, adding the ineffectual warning, “Don’t try to find out who I am.”

Thankfully Min-joon’s powers are useful in this, and upon seeing the photo in the display case, he makes it disappear.

The two stage moms run into each other and snipe back and forth with their usual poisoned politeness. Se-mi’s mother sours to hear that Song-yi will be back on her feet with a new agency, and Song-yi’s mother makes sure to rub it in that Song-yi will be reclaiming all her CFs soon. But Se-mi’s mother gets the last laugh because Song-yi’s mother gets the rude awakening that she is no longer eligible for free services at this beauty salon, now that Song-yi’s sponsorship has been pulled.

That’s enough impetus to send Mom to Jae-kyung’s office to sign the agency contract. Sure, Song-yi still protests, but Mom deludes herself into thinking she can convince her later. Jae-kyung is happy to keep this a secret, and requests that Mom report Song-yi’s filming schedule to him. She assures him she will.

Song-yi prepares for filming, a little disappointed not to be doing a hard melodrama. But one snarky comment from her brother is enough to get her fired up to show off her action skills.

Ah, so this is how they’ll target Song-yi next. While the staff busily sets up the stunts, we see that Killer Secretary has earned himself a job as part of the crew. DUN dun dun!

Seok pursues his lead regarding the fountain pen, and stumbles upon a confounding discovery. Hoping to hear that the dead pen owner perhaps knew Min-joon, he instead finds that the dead man was Min-joon—or at least, he looked exactly like him, a co-worker confirms. Thus it’s with interest that he accepts Min-joon’s request to meet, curious to hear what he has to reveal about himself.

Song-yi and her mother show up to the set to zero fanfare, and only now do they realize that Se-mi is the lead. It chafes their pride to hear that Se-mi pushed for Song-yi to get hired, but they’re in no position to argue about it. I do appreciate that while Song-yi’s mom huffs to be condescended to by Se-mi’s mom, Song-yi tells her that she’s getting back what she dished out over all the years.

Lawyer Jang hears of Min-joon’s harebrained deal with the devil and protests, but Min-joon says that he has to either stop Jae-kyung or kill him. If he doesn’t, Song-yi might die, and time is ticking.

To that end, he surrenders himself to the prosecutor’s office, to offer his “confession.” Oh noooo. Ack. Nooooo!

Jae-kyung smiles to hear that Min-joon is complying so obediently, and anticipates that Song-yi will soon be “taken care of” as well.

Over on the film set, Song-yi prepares for her action scene. She wears her sabotaged wire, positions herself on platform many stories up, and leaps into the air…

EPILOGUE

On the cliff, Song-yi “tests” Min-joon by screaming for his help. When he fails to show, she scoffs at his ridiculous claims… and behind a tree, Min-joon realizes she was faking and grumbles in annoyance. “She can’t just call me anytime! She scared me!”

COMMENTS

Of course you would end there. Of course. Both lives endangered, lovers separated, villain twirling his mustache (nail ring)… Aughhh, New Year.

I find it interesting that despite being burned by history repeatedly, Min-joon still harbored enough hope to keep trying. The scene in the first part of the episode was definitely 20th century, so we know that 300 years of disappointment weren’t enough to completely jade Min-joon, and as we saw later at the bank, he was still able to forge a connection with Lawyer Jang. That’s why I wonder if his attempt to scare off Song-yi wasn’t rather half-hearted, because to him, revealing his identity has always been an attempt to connect. He didn’t look surprised by the Joseon man’s horrified reaction, which suggests that he’s always ready to deal with a negative response, though that expectation can never completely drown out the hope.

That’s why I love Song-yi’s immediate reaction to Min-joon’s revelation. Sure, later we get the whole gamut of denial and skepticism, but in the moment she’s only thinking of him as the man she loves. You almost get the sense that she’s annoyed with the whole alien bit for clouding the real issue, which is more along the lines of: You you like me? Circle YES or NO.

She also doesn’t immediately ascribe negative connotations to him being an alien, unlike the other instances we saw where he was instantly labeled monster and goblin. Granted, she hasn’t fully accepted the fact as truth yet, but there really wasn’t a knee-jerk fear response at the nature of his secret (aside from backing up because he was yelling at her, which I don’t really count). Really, in her book his worst offense is not loving her back. She already loved him enough to consider marrying him if he were a criminal (and I don’t even think there was too much joking in her thought process), so this weird thing? She can make it work, I’m sure.

I can’t recall if the drama has made this explicit, but I am assuming that Lawyer Jang and Song-yi are the only two people who have ever accepted Min-joon as he is, and able to see him beyond the alien label. I have no complaints about the focus of this drama skewing toward the romance, but I do hope we get more scenes of Min-joon’s impending separation with Lawyer Jang, because in a way they’ve been in a spouse-like relationship too, based on trust, confidence, mutual respect and warmth, and for generations, at that. In addition to being the person who knows Min-joon best, I’m also pretty sure that Lawyer Jang knows him better than himself. I love the glimpses we’ve seen so far, and would just love a little bit more. More. MOAR…

Think about it in real situation, i love how Song Yi is not afraif to go after her love, fight for it, confess, even put everything in love for it without thinking about pride or any factor for noble idiocy. She also accept the man with everything he has, his secret, his past. She swallow everything in exchange for her love.

But, when she confirmed that Min Joon (in this context) doesn't love her or doesn't want to spend the future with her, she is smart enough and respect herself enough, protect herself enough, treat herself well enough to not stay there and let herself hurtin along.

If, it's in real world, and min joon is really someone who won't treat her back with love, that's actually what she supposed to do. Instead of clinging alone, she should also think about herself.

This is why song yi character is so awesome. She won't hesitate to get what she want but not stupid to be treated with something that won't valued her

Hi

What's the reason for MJ not revealing Yura's videos? The evidence in there are not circumstantial, they are completely incriminating toward JK. He might have lost the usb but certainly anyone would've kept copies. The best way to protect SY is to take out her enemy, not take out yourself, MJ!

Maybe this week is good opportunity to rewatch my fav past episodes of YFAS. Despair not :)

If I remember correctly it was said in episode 12 that the flash drive is copy-protected (the scene where Jae Kyung was talking to his secretary after DMJ's 'accident'). I watched the english subs though so I'm not sure if it really meant like that.

I'm only six minutes in, but I can't wait to post this. I love that after the glass shatters and DMJ says his stuff about hurting her and leaving, you can see the moment on Song Yi's face when she makes up her mind, "No, you wouldn't hurt me. I'm not leaving. I trust you. I'm staying." Ah, Jeon Ji Hyun is so good in this role!

Why doesn't DMJ make good use of his superpowers to solve the murderer case and get Jae-Kyung into jail?
He should easily be able to set the police on the right track.

If he takes the blame and goes to jail, he might not be able to get himself out of it since his powers are already fading.
In addition, he should know that you can't trust a psycic killer.

it is going to be Min Joons fellow aliens desphering his video message which he sent with the ship. but what gets them confused is Song Yi and Lawyer Jang added their own commentaries or maybe Song yi trying to appeal to her "otherplanet-mother-in-law" and asking if there is any chance ever seeing them in person. btw "do you have television on your planet? thing like movies, dramas? I´d be so famous...! I am a great actress, look, I can do this!"(puts her leg behind the neck)

okay ... apparently people here think my comments are depressing ... so hows this ...

Final epilogue will be the two of them together bickering about how they met and started their relationship ... at the end of the "interview" the screen will turn off, and it'll be their adult child who was watching them while traveling to a different planet.

That'd be so darn cute.
This is a much preferred prediction!
Any epilogue that involves my OTP alive, together, and happy is fine by me. Bonus points for bickering & alien children.

Alien parents-in-law (who appear to be in their early 30s) bickering over whether they made the right choice in approving the match, but agreeing CSY must be from some other planet because: she knows nothing of earth history; mother-in-law emphasizing that she knows nothing of earth cooking; and father-in-law concluding her ageless beauty is not of this earth.

The scene where CSY was shouting on the cliffside of Bukhansan seems to be a meta for the "shout across the mountain" scene from My Sassy Girl.... though the actual location seems different.

I wonder if anyone here knows where the scene from the latter occurred... couldn't find it on google.

DB I love your recaps! I watch the episodes and can't to read your recaps the next day. It's like your in my head thinking the same darn thing. Keep up the good work!

SN: They need to not extend the show. End it as they planned. If they want to do an extra episode they should do a behind the scene. I just know the outtakes are hilarious.

I second that idea, would love to have an hour long special with interviews, NGs, audience reactions, etc. Kind of like the one they had for Secret Garden. I would think that is quite possible since this drama is so loved!

I can't believe I'm saying this but I hope SY gets injured, maybe one or two days' of coma (well I'm confident she can't die now!) just to shake MJ up so that he would stop being so naive that JK will give up. Maybe nearly losing her would jolt him into treasuring their limited time together!

I'm guessing we're supposed to think that MJ will transport in the seconds that SY is falling (and the rigged cable snaps) to save her, but your scenario offers more possibilities for his emotional-turn-to-action response in the face of losing her.

One week will tell~

Actually im very curious if he'll be able to save her let alone hear her. The cliff scene was different because he was aware that she was missing, so he was looking to pinpoint her location by singling out her voice . Plus the car was slowly driving off the cliff so he was able to stop her in time.
Meanwhile..a fall like that would only take a few seconds, and minjoon seems to be completely distracted with his own problems. So my theory is that he doesn't get to save her in time. There's no way. Even if he did, he'd have to leave the confession room (which would make him look suspicious), and then zap in to save song-yi in front of the whole production team (basically revealing his powers So my theory is either 1) song yi gets injured or 2) jay-kyungs lackey didn't do his job right.

What a twist if Se Mi is actually getting the wire? That what i'd been thinking. Plus, I didn't think that Min Joon will give the confession. *cross-finger*

Last, thanks Dramabeans for the recaps. I addicted to your recaps actually. Every time I watch k-drama, I always find your recaps to get myself clear up. and the comments, makes me feels the connection around you guys.

I think Se Mi on the wire is probably not likely cuz it seemed like the leads rarely do their own stunts. Hence SY's determination (when asked to do her own stunts) to outshine the lead.

Actually, I was wondering if MJ might be meeting not to confess but to lead them to JK? The translation for his conversation with Lawyer Jang was quite ambiguous, leaving some possibility of a twist in plot. I mean, we're all quite set up to feel disheartened that he's going to be a noble IDIOT, but I remember Lawyer Jang was in disagreement with any form of interference from MJ, so he could very well be protesting MJ either 1) exposing JK or 2) giving up his secret.

Or maybe I'm just hoping MJ isn't actually going to be naive!

Plus he didn't hear her when she was calling from the cliff to test his super abilities. I am with you that she'll get injured and that will be used in the story to get him to realize that he almost lost her and how much he cares for her. maybe she'll go back in time in a comatose dream and realize she is the girl from 400 yrs ago...

It is definitely so much easier to go through all this emotional hurt from YWCFTS with everyone here. Reading the comments and everyone's opinions honestly helps make things so much better. This drama has been so amazing in so many ways and what can I say except that it will only get better from here.
Happy new year fellow aliens, see you all next week! :)

Many things have gone unpredictable for this drama and that's why I love it so much... So I hope the writer would not have fallen into cliche making MJ playing a noble hero by confessing to the prosecutor as Han Yoo-Ra murder.
He has lived for 400 years, so at least we could expect him to be much smarter than the psycho JK, right? But with the detective and prosecutor have started connecting the dots on the murder case, can we hope the confession would never come up? or SY's sabotaged wire accident preventing him from doing that? although I don't know how the plot is gonna be...

Lovely episode!! *happy dance *

Kudos to the writer for inserting the numerous inside jokes and references, eg in this episode a nod to JJH's past movies (the last vampire and thieves). Clearly the writer loves JJH and kdramas as much as us!

Songyi's openness, honesty and even vulnerability in confronting her feelings and whether minjoon has any for her, is such an inspiring thing to watch. It strikes a chord with many who has ever had a crush or had unrequited feelings, especially the way she bravely faces rejection with that determined attitude. Amazing that she turned the tables on minjoon using his own alien 'excuse' and even blackmailed him into having a romantic date of her own design! You go girl!!!

Songyi doesn't know the wires are sabotaged, so she won't be able to scream for help, and it would be unlikely that minjoon can teleport there in time to prevent this accident from happening. Although min joon is supposedly gonna give his confession to take the blame, maybe he'd say something completely unexpected to what we'd think. Hwi kyung is the one who could resolve this whole murder who dunnit once he finds sil, unleashes her and she reveals the monster that JK is.

if you listened carefully, it is not HER wires that are tampered. It is Se Mi´s, to make it look like Song Yi was jealous at the main actress and tried to get back her position by arranging an accident. I am sure this is how Jae kyung planned it. cause he asked : "what about Song yi´s SIDE?

Introduction {Rant}I think WE are all doing the First Stage (as in Anger Stage) Prof. ALIEN was discussing in his class. *starts kicking pillows like SongYi* >.< i hate it I hate I... HATE THIS!!!! Although I'm used to mid season breaks in American TV series but it'sjust sooo different with this one. *Unbelleeebabble!!! (SongYi Style)*

Moving on... Prof. ALIEN's lecture made me want to go back to school & major in psychology. Hahaa! It was so fun watching him discuss while SongYi acts out every single stage. & I was thinking of my own version of those way back when I was licking my wounds after a breakup. Hahaa! I want moar of those theories. Really!

I dont want him to take all the blame!!! I mean how can a man who lived with humans for 400 years, who is an intellectual with superpowers agree to deal with Mr. KILLER?! I just dont get it. :-/ come on! U are smarter than any of them even the OLDEST one & u decide to do that??? Come on!!!!

The writer has been doing splendidly on this show so far. I really don't have much issue with anything...even with the fact that DMJ is doing the noble thing, it fits his personality to a T. If I was a writer I would have use that tactic of him trying to take the blame as well, why? because it makes the most sense, personality wise and logic wise (not what most people wanted for sure, even me). He may have super power (that he rarely uses) and be smart (mainly book smart) but people give him too much credit in thinking he can just outright "go for the kill" the first round in the game...I feel the writer needs to exhaust all options that ring true to his character BEFORE coming to the conclusion that something drastic needs to happen. I pray that I'm right and that Songyi is going to get hurt doing that jump and that would be the straw that draws our hero over the edge...let's face it, the impact would be 10 times better when he goes berserk on Evil Man when we know how peaceful his character is. It will just showcase to us how much he loves Songyi and how much that has changed him as an alien/person....the same reason I love seeing his changes as a stoic, cold, detached alien gradually blooming to full blooded man in the face of love (jealousy and all).

lol, no it's not me...I rarely post anything and I did not see Marry Him If You Dare..and I didn't finish Heirs either (it just doesn't interest me so much)...believe it or not, I actually finish Arang and the Magistrate instead, within the same time frame when I was watching Heirs lol. Love LMH but why oh why did he choose that role. He can turn any show popular just by being in it but the writers for that show needs some maturing to do (the acting is splendid though!), either that or it's their aim to cater to mainly teenagers. I do want to finish it though eventually just so I can get a rounded idea for the whole show and not being too bias...that and the fact that I rarely ever NOT finish a show, this is only the third show I didn't finish (the others being Protect The Boss and Dream High)

I really enjoyed Arang & The Magistrate. AATM offered something different – a Sageuk mixed with mystery, fantasy, ghosts, comedy, and mythology.

Heirs requires patience and is not for everyone.

Although Heirs had its faults, I have no regrets – about watching it. The writing from a plot/storytelling perspective was flawed and missing content from time to time, but it introduced some memorable, complex, and multifaceted characters.

The foundation is laid out in Episodes 1 – 9 and it doesn’t hit its stride until probably around Episode 10. At which point, the slowness starts to dissipate. Episode 12 is a pivotal and emotional turning point for many of the characters.

yeah I watched Heirs up to around 10 or so...don't get me wrong the acting and part of the story is good and intriguing. But there was too many negatives for me, for instance I really don't like the main lead girl...she can act but she lack chemistry with all her leads from every show she's in, she's holding back big time in that department and that really killed me as I'm usually very invested in the romantic aspect. Then, there was just too many story lines that I'm trying to keep up with (yeah I really like the older dad with the lady that's about to get married to someone else, and also I like the story line about the older "poor" girl tutor to that young rich guy (not Tan's brother), I thought they were cute!) but that's not even my biggest peeve....my biggest problem was with their cliffhangers believe it or not, lol! I hated it to no end, I rolled my eyes every time because it was soooo cheesy and juvenile (to me anyway)...like all they can do is have Kim Tan and Yong Do do evil eyes at each other all day and stick the girl in the middle. I guess I'm just out of the High School phase drama.

Love this episode.. love how Song Yi chooses to wrap her feeling after taking him for a meal...something which he didn't do... Also how she face him and her feelings... such a beautiful and strong character. Who says she is is spoilt and rude... She is more human and warm than those sweet toned with evil heart people...

Loving this drama for so many reasons. I like how they show the many times Min Joon has tried to connect with people, anf failed. In a sense, they have implicitly displayed his loneliness over the past 400 years. He's over 400 years old and they've managed to give us his history on earth in not so many words and episodes.
This role was made for Jun Ji hyun! And she is breathing life into it. I seriously don't think anybody else would have been able to pull off this character as well as she is. She's lovable, goofy, strong, proud without being arrogant. She's a lot of things without being overbearing and ridiculous, I don't know--i applaud her for this. Glad Kim Soo Hyun convinced her to go for it! *cough* she should do more dramas like this one lol

Thanks for the recap! Once again another great episode, why oh why is there only one this week T_T

Loved the part where Song-Yi asks why he eats and why his blood isn't blue - my brother was especially tickled because those were more or less the same questions he was asking when he first started watching this drama.

I really enjoyed how Song-Yi gave him a talk about leaving and moving on, only she went through the whole overcoming grief thing. Min-Joon's depression was the icing on the cake, ha! I was so torn between laughter and going, ugh you guys...

And I totally knew before we even saw Murderer Assistant that they were going to sabotage the wire! As I told my brother, "If they're going to bother going into so much detail about how she's going to do her own stunt and how the wire WON'T work, then they're definitely going to do something to it." Didn't make me any less mad when they stopped the episode at such a place though. Eep. I'm hoping Min-Joon will save her; maybe he hears her and whisks out right in the middle of his "confession"! Dun dun dun...

Thanks so much for the recap, javabeans! Happy Lunar New Year! ^^

It's sad to see how all Min Joon wanted was to help people in the past, yet each time, people lacked gratitude and the fear saddened him. No wonder he decided to conceal his identity and just let things be to save himself from further heartache.

I love how Song Yi reached out for Min Joon's hand when he revealed the truth, which is a sign that he is her source of stability. Love her reaction afterwards with the vampire outburst. =P And then her subsequent ways of dealing with him by checking how could he possibly be an alien if he couldn't bypass her, fly, teleport, etc. So funny! Also love that his worries about being unable to take her with him or stay on earth plus having meals or taking walks together were unwarranted since Song Yi will take the initiative to do those things. LOL *pinches Min Joon's cheek to check skin* Haha...

Bok Ja is the BFF of the Year!! Love their handshake routine. XD

With the cliff scene, I had a feeling that Min Joon would have gone to save Song Yi regardless, not knowing that she was just faking it. Happy to see that was exactly what happened in the epilogue. =)

The talk at the beach was really heartbreaking since Min Joon was totally trying to hold back his feelings and be unaffected by what Song Yi said that the most important thing to her was whether he had liked her even for a moment, and what he thought of her... At the same time, it's good to see how Song Yi deals with this heartbreak with such finality, deciding that she will get over these feelings if what he said was true. No wishy-washy stuff or annoying clingliness. I almost wished that Min Joon would have not continued to lie when he realized the she didn't care whether or not he was from another planet or an alien. She just loved him for him. But then I guess we wouldn't have much angst left for the drama...

The psychology lecture amused me since I majored in psychology during university and remember learning that. Who better to showcase each stage than Song Yi? LOL But it was sad to see Min Joon not eating when trying to cope with his depression. =( *coughyouputyourselfinthissituationcough*

When Lawyer Jang said that someone had already paid the deposit on Min Joon's apartment and must be really rich, etc. I was initially thinking it was Jae Kyung and he was plotting something again. I guess I've just been so spooked by his creepiness. Then, I realized it was Hwi Kyung. Kekeke~ Love the jealous Min Joon coming out!! But dang, he must have been so angry to completely demolish that mug when trying to pick it up. The whole scene of him denying to be angry later when talking about how easily Song Yi got over her feelings cracked me up. XD

Since Min Joon found out that Song Yi had already told the detective that Jae Kyung was dating Yura and that it was to take suspicion off him, I hope he would realize that even though Song Yi was in danger, he won't be able to convince the prosecutor so easily by just taking the blame.

I really hope that Hwi Kyung continues to follow the leads he's gotten and get the truth about the mental institution to find his sister-in-law. I want him to find out what Jae Kyung has been up to himself or team up with Min Joon to take down Jae Kyung.

LOLed at how Song Yi left the post-it on Min Joon's door regarding the photo in the museum after pacing back and forth and back and forth, as if he wouldn't know it was...

(continued)

LOLed at how Song Yi left the post-it on Min Joon's door regarding the photo in the museum after pacing back and forth and back and forth, as if he wouldn't know it was her. XD It's actually good to see how despite her thoughts on what he had said about being here for 400 years and being an alien (and she now has reason to believe that after seeing the 100-year-old photo plus her own rescue experiences), she still decides to let Min Joon know in order to protect him in case others see that photo.

JJH totally rocked that pink leather jacket!! Love her outfit and swag plus smacking some reality into her mom for saying that what Semi's mom said was what she used to say. Glad Song Yi is taking ownership of the supportive role in the movie despite knowing Semi is playing lead AND suggested for her to be cast.

It's interesting to note that the prosecutor has already uncovered the fact that Min Joon looks exactly like the fountain pen owner who had supposedly passed away. So, he should be taking whatever Min Joon plans to confess with a grain of salt. I'm also intrigued to see what Min Joon would really say. He doesn't want to go for the option to kill Jae Kyung at this point. So, what he decides he would do to stop Jae Kyung would be interesting. If not taking the blame, does that mean outing himself as an alien? Hmmm...

Ending on Song Yi's stunt scene definitely left us hanging quite literally... There seems to be different guesses on what will happen next based on the other comments I've read here: Will Min Joon save her in time? Will she be injured? Was it her wires that got sabotaged? I'm thinking Min Joon wouldn't be able to save her in time if he is currently in the confession room. He'd have to freeze time and teleport to the set. But the drop on the wires would likely be too fast for him to get there in time. And Song Yi wouldn't know to scream for help until it's pretty much too late. I don't want to sound malicious, but I do hope Song Yi gets injured. I think it takes something really serious to jolt Min Joon to his senses that him taking the blame for Jae Kyung will NOT prevent him from wanting to finish off Song Yi. So, he needs to find another solution since Jae Kyung will definitely not keep his word. This kinda goes back to a comment I had made in a previous episode where I hope something BIG happens to Song Yi to get Min Joon to realize that he shouldn't keep lying to Song Yi about his true feelings. He needs to own up to them ASAP, like he told Lawyer Jang about spending the remaining two months together. I was thinking Song Yi would sacrifice herself to save or protect him, not quite as extreme as Yi Hwa on the cliff 400 years ago with the arrows, but something traumatic enough to knock some sense into Min Joon. Then, this stunt scene came up. Glad to see the writer keeping things fresh in this drama in each episode. Guess we'll have to see how things play out in next Wednesday's episode, which seems so far away!!

I noticed that there were two scenes relating to the outcome of the prosecutor's investigation about the pen.

The first was before MJ showed up at his office. Prosecutor just got back and when the police sidekick asked how it went, he said it wasn't fruitful.

Yet when he was talking to MJ, we got to see the flashback where he discovers that the pen's owner looked exactly like MJ. Does that mean the prosecutor suspects something more mysterious (aided by MJ's weird disappearance on the yacht's CCTV) than he lets on to the detective... either because his hunch sounds absurd or he thinks the detective is too simple-minded to comprehend?

There is nothing "noble", "noble idiocy", or "in the name of love" about Min Joo confessing and taking the blame for JK's evil actions BECAUSE as a Professor of Behavioral Psychology, he would absolutely know that action would be absolutely useless, because JK is not someone who would keep his word.

If the writers have him do that, that is unbelievably out of character and the writers are just pulling anything out of a hat.

I think there is going to be another layer to that confession if Min Joo is as smart of a Professor as I think he is.

I also thought about the boy who cried wolf during the epilogue.

What does killer creep hope to accomplish by harming Sen Mi? If SY is disgraced some and or arrested she can still talk. He won't feel safe untill she is dead. Maybe if both of them die in the accident the cops won't look into it too deeply. SY sabotaged SM
nd also died so there is nothing to look into. Diabolical. However he didn't know about prosecutor brother. I also hope DM is using this confession as a trick to get killer psycho and hopefully his killer sec too.

There is a possibility that we will find out how he got away from all those guards in Joseon in a flashback before the end.

I would reallylike to find out more about his star. Are all the creatures there Korean look alikes, or could they assume the Korean look if they are in Korea and look let say English if they are in England. WHAT KIND OF FAMILY DOES HE HAVE THERE ETC.

i want them to solve this jae-kyung conflict and move on to bigger and better things T__T. Like min joons background and how he'll go home. More about his powers. Limitations? How will he become human, if at all? I think there's alot of fantasy elements that this writer could explore. Sadly, that is my only disappointment with this show(aside from jaekyung). I was expecting more exploration of his alien background and planet. But she dished some pretty awesome things too so im not complaining too much.

This writer would be too cruel if these two don't end up together. We need to move the story forward. Jaekyung needs to go so we can get to those juicy conflicts.

After watching the epilogue of the episode my first thought was, "NOOOOOOOOOOO HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE ONE WEEK WITHOUT A NEW EP?"

And then the answer hit me, obviously read DB's review of the episode and read everyone's (yes, everyone's) comments about the episode. LOL

To be honest I was quite sad for CSY at the museum, because in essence it was kind of like another rejection. At the beach, I'm glad she asked what she wanted to know, and I am so proud of her character and the fact that she walked away after MJ tells her that he never once liked her. (And I secretly hoped he would confess that he likes her).

It was a great episode nevertheless, and I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw Jeon Ji Hyun walk into the filming site with her pink jacket. LOVE IT.

Also, has anyone else seen and downloaded LINE's Jeon Ji Hyun emojis? Its free to download but I don't think its available worldwide yet TT_TT

Thanks for the great recap and insightful comments! Didn't realise the references to JJH'S earlier roles as a vampire (stuck at 20 yrs old, haha!) and thief (yenicall!), her asking MJ if he likes married woman now (hah!), and SY taking MJ out for dinner and walk which are the 2 mundane things that MJ says he couldn't do for her. It's amazing how the writer could carefully weave these details into the story like easter eggs waiting to be discovered by smart viewers :).
SY's
SY's initial reaction to the reveal is daebak. I liked that she didn't get scared off or turn against MJ, instead hold on to him for support, showing her ultimate trust for this guy no matter what he said. The best and most emotional scene for me in this epi would have to be the beach scene. As each of SY's questions drill deeper and deeper into the heart of MJ, I could only imagine how strong MJ is to deny his overwhelming feeling and stick to his cold facade. My heart just tensed and tears oozed slowly out from the corner by the time SY walked away and MJ could only cast his longing glance behind her back. Sad but beautiful.

As this drama's strength is, there is no lack of comedic effects! The 5 steps to recovery and MJ's jealousy is hilarious and managed to rescue me right back from angstland, haa. Another strength of the writer till now is to tell a story that is contrary to popular predictions and keeps people on the toes, guessing what the next moves would be. As such, I doubt MJ is going to take the blame for everything despite the 'obvious' clues dropped earlier, sole purpose is to derail us smart viewers. My guess: MJ is going to out himself as alien to the prosecutor and show him proof of JY wrongdoings. When SY is in danger from the loosen rope, MJ teleports himself over and saves her, thereby killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Why? The prosecutor gets to confirm MJ is telling the truth, and SY finally gets her proof that he is 'superman', the one proof that she so desperately wanted with her recent showmanship at the cliffside :).

How to tide myself through till next Wed? Already viewed twice the raw ep13, one with sub, read 2 full recaps with comments, add in a Covertly Grandly, what's next? Maybe start TMTETS. Haaaaa..

I wonder if this wire scene was written after JJH accepted the role, anyhow I wanted to remark that she totally makes it look effortless and graceful leaping off of great heights lol! If you watched her bts for thieves where she was jumping off the edge of a real building, she only faltered once before doing it for real, and it struck me that she was really professional as an actress covering both demands for emotional and physical acting, totally kicking ass with her passion and gutsy. Endlessly in awe of Her Mighty Goddess.

Also chiming in agreement about the every-inch-a-superstar entrance with the pink leather jacket. Her signature jacket over the shoulder look doesn't work for everyone (SM for one) and JJH is doing a darn good job of selling them clothes even if unintentionally. For fellow beanies who equally are attracted to songyi's glam threads, check out Koreanfashiondrama.com to find out what she's wearing. I love mainly the outerwear, esp the structured jackets, capes(!!) Worn by songyi and carried with such panache by JJH!!

i personally think min joon is sweet for not telling song yi about the danger she is in. cus shes been working hard, alone, all this time. now he wants to be a savior for her.

Sometimes what you see at face value is what you get.
Min Joon keeps her in the dark because 1) he feared rejection or 2) It may put her in a dangerous position.
He has enough reason not to trust humans (key word humans, not women) in the beginning because we saw all those times he opened up about his powers only to have those people turn on him(would like to point out they were all men). Meanwhile, going off what the drama showed us, the only people who really accepted him for what he was was yi-hwa, lawyer jang, and joseon doctor. This has nothing to do with hating/discriminating women.

I know the freeze-kiss didn't feel right with some people but we all know that he loves her, just that he can't outright show her atm because he's currently being a noble idiot. So he will love her from afar. They're both already in the stage where they clearly in love each other and have already kissed on mutual terms. One can argue that he has no right to kiss her without her consent, but we all know she'd more than accept that kiss after her heartfelt confession for him. I'm all for feminism, really, but i feel like given those characters and their actions the argument didn't really hold enough weight for me to really be disturbed by it. Esp. when you get tons of those forced kisses in dramaland where the heroine clearly did NOT want to be kissed and struggling against it with those deer-in headlight eyes. Those, imo, are even worse.

ah im glad im not the only one who thought that. felt like a monster for a while.

while i do love girl power, this again, is a ROM-com. so even tho the female lead can whip em all by herself, if i were her i won't mind if theres a sweet (and hot damn) guy suddenly lining up to wrap things up without me having to even lift a finger. i somehow dont think the romance is at all selfish on min joon's side, it may be a little, but imo songyi's the selfish one? juuuust a little bit, the way shes forcing him to admit he likes her. and hey no im not blaming her, im selfish as hell when it comes to love ha.

like for song yi, its fine that she kisses min joon when she was drunk, but if its the other way around its not fine. sometimes i wanna pat the guys hahaha, they have to do so much.

but yeah, to each their own (is that the term?)... i chose to, like song yi, fall head over heels for uri alien oppa hahahahah!

I don't really think he's "doing the noble thing"-I think he realizes the futility of their situation because of the fluids exchange problem, and the longer he's around her, the more he wants to just grab her and ravish her. Their love is becoming more and more dangerous for him. At this point, the situation is impossible. That's why I'm hoping his gradual loss of power means he will change and his happy dream will come true.

Jae kyung can't hurt Song Yi without taking care of Min Joon at the same time. Min Joon would just teleport and throw him off a cliff when he finds out. It would also be a terrible waste of screen time for Song Yi to be comatose in the hospital.

Seems like the cliffhanger is going to be more of a trap for Min Joon to out himself since he's stuck in front of the DA.
