Thirty But Seventeen: Episodes 15-16

Just as Jennifer promised, time moves at it’s own pace, and just as it begins to pick up speed, both Woo-jin and Chan realize what’s at stake for them as the end of Seo-ri’s stay closes in. Roles reverse as Woo-jin starts to act like a responsible adult and Chan’s seventeen-year-old emotions reveal that he still has some growing to do.

EPISODE 15: “Variations on a mystery”

Seo-ri enters the previously locked storage room to retrieve a muddy Deok-gu. She tries to clean up the paw prints she discovers covering the books on the floor, and leans down to inspect the scattered papers, including the drawing Woo-jin completed of her when he was younger.

Jennifer stops Seo-ri before she sees the drawing to insist they follow Woo-jin’s rules and not look inside the storage room. Seo-ri obeys Jennifer’s stern command and Jennifer shuts the door behind them. Jennifer, how could you do this to us?!

Woo-jin arrives home late, but not late enough that Jennifer isn’t still awake. She stayed up to report the storage room invasion, but after seeing the contents of the room, Woo-jin’s not upset.

Woo-jin’s father surprises him with a late-night call to ask if the “matter” has been resolved. Woo-jin says that it has, but doesn’t make the connection that Seo-ri will soon be leaving until his father mentions closing on the sale of the house next week. Any protest that Woo-jin might have against the sale is silenced when his father mentions how difficult it’s become to maintain the house as he grows older.

Seo-ri scans ads for rooms for rent, but nothing looks good. She heads outside to gaze up at her tree, knowing he’ll be uprooted soon for the new construction. Woo-jin joins her outside, his thoughts on the sale of the house.

As honest as Jennifer, Seo-ri’s first thought is to admit Deok-gu and her invasion into the storage room, but again Woo-jin is unconcerned now that he thinks nothing is in there.

Seo-ri asks if it’s okay for her to take the painted stone from the tree with her, and Woo-jin nods yes. But as she heads inside, it hits him that she means to take it with her when she moves out.

In his room, Woo-jin gazes out of the skylight, snapping his tape measure, until an idea strikes him and he begins writing a list.

The next morning, Seo-ri walks with Hyun to work. Hyun laments that he forgot to pay his rent this month and Seo-ri expresses her own rental hunting woes. This makes Hyun think of fish for some reason, but Seo-ri has no idea what he means and suggests eating fish later.

At work, Woo-jin reviews his list he brainstormed the night before of possible solutions to keep Seo-ri living with him or close by. Hee-soo arrives at work with bungeoppang ice cream to share. The fish-shaped pastry reminds Hyun what he was trying to think of earlier—his cousin is looking for someone to stay at her apartment and look after her fish while she studies abroad. No rent necessary, all Seo-ri has to do is feed the fish.

Seo-ri eagerly accepts Hyun’s offer. Woo-jin stammers out a series of protests, but Hyun has a reassuring answer to all of his concerns.

The place seems perfect, Woo-jin covers by saying he wishes that he could move into it instead. Too bad for him, the apartment is women-only. Hee-soo can’t help but smile as she watches her long-time friend struggle to prevent Seo-ri from leaving his side while also not admitting how he feels.

Woo-jin gives Hyun a slightly-too-hard squeeze of the shoulders of thanks for helping out Seo-ri, and then heads to the roof with his list. The move seems so sudden to Woo-jin, and he crumples his list of ideas up and throws the paper in the waste bin.

Meanwhile, Chan has broken a new record as a single rower at practice. Coach reminds the team that they’ll be practicing at the site for the national competition next week, and Chan starts to feel victory close at hand. And victory means that he gets to confess to Seo-ri, and that happy realization has him running across the dock in delight while his friends look on confused.

When Chan gets home, however, Seo-ri smiles as she tells him about her plans to move out this weekend to her new apartment. Chan has forgotten how close they are to the end of the month, and what that meant for Seo-ri.

Chan spots his similarly despondent uncle in the backyard grumpily turning down the bungeoppang Hae-bum and Deok-soo have brought over. They offer a pastry to Chan as he approaches, but he too is in no mood to be reminded of fish, ha.

Chan intercepts Woo-jin and begs him to let Seo-ri stay with them at Chan’s family’s apartment. Chan starts to say that Seo-ri can’t be left to live alone, but he hesitates to reveal Seo-ri’s hospitalization to Woo-jin and drops it. Chan’s pleading lasts until they make it inside where Seo-ri, Jennifer, and Chan’s friends sit.

Chan blurts out the invitation to Seo-ri, but she declines. She tells them that she appreciates everything they’ve done but doesn’t want to impose further on them. When the boys suggest a farewell party, Seo-ri declines. To her, farewell parties are for real goodbyes, and she intends to visit with everyone as often as she can. While Seo-ri laughs and jokes, Woo-jin and Chan watch on, resigned and itchy, respectively.

Seo-ri plans her packing in her room with Deok-gu. Meanwhile, Woo-jin can’t sleep and finds himself outside, staring at the tree.

Jennifer joins him again, both of them admitting that they’re having a hard time sleeping tonight. Woo-jin brings up time again, this time expressing his wishes that it would slow down.

Jennifer adds some additional wisdom to her thoughts on time, and suggests that the difference between fond memories and regrets is how one chooses to appreciate the moments while they pass. Her sage advice given, Jennifer slaps her hands, claims mosquitos are out, and heads inside.

The next day, Seo-ri, Wo-jin, and Hyun grab snacks together for the meeting they are attending with the musical festival committee. Hyun’s car won’t start though, and the service garage reports the dead battery will take “a while” to fix (really?). Hyun stays behind to wait for his car, while Woo-jin and Seo-ri go ahead by train.

Seo-ri is excited to see cup ramyun so the pair grab some at the station. Seo-ri yelps when she discovers her ramyun is really spicy, and Woo-jin comments on her apparent inability to eat spicy foods. Woo-jin slurps up a big helping of noodles, and struggles to disguise how spicy it is for him as well. They grin and grouse as they tease each other goodnaturedly.

On the train, a group of students brings a smile to Seo-ri’s face as they sing together. Woo-jin asks why she’s staring, and Seo-ri says that she always wanted to experience things like this, even though she would have missed out while she was in Germany even if things hadn’t gone wrong for her.

Woo-jin starts to ask why Seo-ri didn’t make it to Germany, but he’s interrupted by the students, who offer him the microphone. Woo-jin declines, but Seo-ri is up for the challenge and contributes some verses, and the mic comes back to Woo-jin for some verses as well. Soon everyone in the train car is clapping and singing along, and Woo-jin’s question is forgotten.

As they deboard, one of the students gives Woo-jin a polaroid of Seo-ri and Woo-jin smiling and clapping together, the words, “I hope your love lasts” written at the bottom. Woo-jin grins broadly, and then tucks the photo hastily into his pocket when Seo-ri asks if he has something.

At the conference center, Woo-jin sends Seo-ri on to their room alone while he checks them in at reception. On her way, Seo-ri spots Tae-rin and bounces over to talk to her.

Tae-rin responds much more coldly to Seo-ri’s greeting than before, and finds a quick excuse to avoid talking to Seo-ri.

Once in the meeting room, Seo-ri spots a small mistake in Tae-rin’s presentation. She makes a sound as if to contribute, but then quickly quiets. The committee chairman insists that she share her thoughts, so Seo-ri explains that while most think that the composer of Toy Symphony was Haydn, it was actually Mozart’s father Leopold. The director is impressed, while Tae-rin fidgets with her cuticles.

Back at the house, Chan returns home just as Hyung-tae arrives to try to find Seo-ri. Chan remembers Seo-ri’s request to not report her to anyone from the hospital, so Chan lies to Hyung-tae and tells him that the mystery woman never returned.

Chan follows up by letting Hyung-tae know that the house will be demolished soon, so there’s no reason to keep coming back. Hyung-tae stares in disbelief.

Back at the conference center, Seo-ri spots another violinist performing in the lobby and approaches her. Seo-ri praises her performance, as well as her selection of strings with her instrument, and that’s enough to tip the woman off that Seo-ri might be a violinist herself.

The woman offers Seo-ri the opportunity to play, and Seo-ri begins to play Schumann’s Three Romances.

As Seo-ri plays, Tae-rin runs into her old conductor. As Seo-ri’s music fills the the lobby, the conductor recognizes the piece as the one Seo-ri used to audition back when she was young for his orchestra. He recalls how he enjoyed her playing during the competition and her earnest promise to do well when he offered her a spot as second violin.

Woo-jin also hears Seo-ri playing and watches her from afar. He remembers Seo-ri’s sadness after watching Tae-rin’s concert and her own wishes to be a professional violinist.

Seo-ri seems to be doing well, but her hands are still out of practice and they eventually falter. Seo-ri grimaces at the mistake and hands the violin back to the performer.

Seo-ri’s former conductor just misses Seo-ri as she walks away dejectedly. Tae-rin takes note of Seo-ri’s departure as the conductor returns to her. He asks if Tae-rin recalls the talented Seo-ri and wonders what happened to her.

Tae-rin recalls the days of the orchestra and overhearing two girls in the bathroom talking about how Seo-ri was a better performer, but Tae-rin won because she was more accurate and had more family connections. Returning to the conductor’s questions, Tae-rin replies that she doesn’t really remember a girl like Seo-ri.

Seo-ri sits outside on a bench, her eyes downcast. A car screeches to a halt in front of her, and inside is Woo-jin. He shouts at Seo-ri to tell Hee-soo that he went to a beach nearby, known to be refreshing. Seo-ri nods at him.

Woo-jin is determined to cheer Seo-ri up at this beach, so he drives around the circle driveway and returns, this time shouting for Seo-ri to also tell Hyun, if he asks, that he’s at a beach known to refresh you just by looking at it. He waits for Seo-ri to catch his hint this time, but she just nods again.

About to give up, Woo-jin begins to ask directly if she’ll come with him, and at the same time, Seo-ri asks if she can come with him. These two, cute.

On the road, Seo-ri is quiet, unexcited as they approach the beach.

EPISODE 16: “I want you to stay”

The beach must be really refreshing, as the previously sullen Seo-ri runs towards it with shouts of joy. Woo-jin smiles and joins in her cheers.

On the beach, Woo-jin finally gathers the courage to ask Seo-ri why she wasn’t able to keep playing the violin. Seo-ri answers without hesitation and tells him about her long-term stay in the hospital.

Woo-jin recalls each moment when Seo-ri appeared lost in time, and also times when he was less than understanding about her behavior. Seo-ri admits that she struggles to fit her actions with her age still. Woo-jin apologizes for the insensitive things he said to Seo-ri in the past when he didn’t understand her circumstances.

Seo-ri and Woo-jin sit on the beach together, his shirt wrapped around her waist, and they talk. Seo-ri asks if Woo-jin knows what an intermission is, like at a musical or a concert. Seo-ri says that she loved intermission as a kid because it always meant there was more to come. She says that she’s trying to think of her life now as an intermission, a brief pause along the way.

She tells him firmly that she wants to move on with her life without his help. She admits that she found Woo-jin’s list in the waste bin, and while she appreciates it, she wants to do things on her own. Seo-ri fears that if she doesn’t keep charging ahead into the future, she might give up and stop trying entirely.

This hits Woo-jin hard, as he confesses that he wasn’t able to stay as strong as Seo-ri. He tells her that when he was young, he did something that hurt a girl, and he withdrew from the world because of it. He struggles to share the details with her, and Seo-ri stops him gently. She reassures him that it’s okay to stop if it’s painful, and she appreciates him sharing his story with her.

On the ride back to the conference hotel, Woo-jin reassures Seo-ri that she is more adult than he’s ever been, so she doesn’t need to worry about not acting her age or struggling on her own. She smiles at the encouragement.

Back in the city, Chan is busy getting kicked out of Seo-ri’s future apartment building by security as he tries to scout it out. Ri-an is nearby to witness the scene, but doesn’t recognize Chan with his hoodie up.

In her hotel room, Seo-ri gazes out the window and spots Woo-jin out for a late-night coffee walk. As she watches him by the pool from her balcony, she recalls all the support he gave her that day, and she puts her hand to her heart as her feelings begin to shift and swell into something more.

Seo-ri breathes heavily, as if she intended to fog up a window in the cold. She flashes back to when she used to do this as a kid, and how once fogged up, she would draw a left-angled bracket on the glass. When her friends asked her what it was, she responded that she had drawn a crescendo.

In the present, Seo-ri draws an imaginary crescendo in the air, towards the direction of Woo-jin. Poolside, Woo-jin is also thinking about Seo-ri, and her determination to restart after her life’s intermission.

When Woo-jin returns home, Chan ambushes him at the door to demand that they take Seo-ri with them when they move out. Chan is finally prepared to tell Woo-jin why Seo-ri can’t live on her own, but Woo-jin cuts him off, telling him that he knows already.

Woo-jin has heard Seo-ri wishes, and he shares with Chan Seo-ri’s desire to move out on her own. He reminds Chan that Seo-ri is an adult, and that the best thing that they can do for her is to support her.

In bed, Chan stares at the photo of Seo-ri on his phone while tears spill over his cheeks. When Seo-ri knocks at the door to talk, Chan asks her to talk through the door, so that he can avoid her catching him crying. Seo-ri thanks him for being the first person to become her friend after she woke up. Chan continues to cry, barely able to divert the conversation by chiding Seo-ri for talking as though they’ll never see each other again.

In the morning, Chan’s friends are there to wish Seo-ri farewell and they tear up as she gets ready to leave. They’ve even brought her an electric fan. Chan, on the other hand, breezes down the stairs with an air of nonchalance. He tells the boys they’ll see Seo-ri again soon and pulls them out the door to practice.

Chan can’t keep up his ruse, so he immediately rushes back inside to give Seo-ri medicine for every potential ailment, pepper spray, a whistle, and reminders her to change her door lock code immediately when she arrives as the boys drag him out the door.

Jennifer sees Seo-ri off with a gift of all her favorite foods. Woo-jin insists on driving her to the new place, even as Seo-ri protests. Before she leaves, Seo-ri manages to hug Jennifer, and our robotic maid pats Seo-ri’s back in a return hug. Seo-ri has left a gift for Jennifer, a pair of house slippers, and Jennifer abandons her normal black sandals for the slippers.

Out at lunch, Deok-soo and Hae-bum find the meal coupons Seo-ri has tucked into their wallets. And Chan digs out the present she snuck into his gym bag as he lounges on a park bench: gloves to protect his hands while he rows. He lies back and admits, “My heart… hurts.”

In the car, Woo-jin gives Seo-ri some prints of photos he’s taken of the house and Deok-gu for when she feels lonely in her new place. She thanks him sincerely, for everything that he’s given her for the past month. She tells him that every moment has felt like a gift.

Woo-jin thanks her in return, for staying with Chan and him. Seo-ri is so touched by this gesture that she starts to tear up. She asks Woo-jin to drop her off before they reach the apartment, admitting to her tears, and Woo-jin watches as she walks away.

Woo-jin stops by the apartment though to drop off his card with the security guard. On the back wall, a sign warns residents to report the pictured man, with photos of Chan from the night he tried to sneak in, ha.

Seo-ri gets ready to enter her new apartment. Right before she does, she realizes that she forgot to give Woo-jin the present she selected for him. After their moment in the car, she thinks the present isn’t good enough anymore and shoves it in her skirt pocket.

Seo-ri enters the door passcode for her apartment… only to find a woman exiting the apartment. It turns out that Hyun’s cousin’s study abroad has been delayed by a semester. Oh no.

On the streets with all of her possessions, Seo-ri considers all of the moments when she insisted on leaving Woo-jin’s house. Returning to their house now seems impossible. She drags her cart over to the design company, but ducks away when she hears Woo-jin coming.

The pepper spray that Chan gifted her falls off the cart though, and Woo-jin puts it all together quickly. He darts out of the office in pursuit, but Seo-ri manages to evade him for a while. She walks all over the city with nowhere to go, but the heat begs her to stop and find some relief.

She does have the fan the boys gifted her, and luck also delivers her an outlet on the sidewalk. She plugs in right there and sits in front of her fan. Woo-jin joins her after a few moments, his own face sweaty from chasing her down.

Woo-jin expresses his frustration with Hyun for not telling anyone the apartment plan fell through and tells Seo-ri to just come home. They still have a few weeks left before the house sells, and she has nowhere to go.

Woo-jin says that he’s worried that the plants will wilt without her, and that Deok-gu will be sad without her, and then finally when she resists, he admits that he wants her to live at his house with him.

His bold confession has Seo-ri cranking up the fan to full blast to cool her hot cheeks. Woo-jin asks her to look at him, and then extends his hand and asks her to come live with him. Seo-ri looks at his hand for a moment before accepting it and allowing him to lift her to her feet.

On the walk back, Woo-jin says that Seo-ri can move to Chan’s family’s apartment if she hasn’t found a place by the end of the month. As they walk, Woo-jin spots a corner of the gift Seo-ri had planned to give him. And even though it says “ajusshi” on it, Seo-ri insists that it isn’t for him.

Chan thinks he must be delusional when he finds Seo-ri at home playing with Deok-gu like normal. When he realizes that she isn’t just in his imagination, he gives her a big hug, and the boys turn up to dance circles of happiness together.

Jennifer heads out, and Miss Yellow Shoes appears again. This time though, she calls out to Jennifer, by the name Hwang Mi-jung. The woman takes her sunglasses off and asks, “Do you recognize me?”

While at practice, Chan receives a call from his mom. She announces that she’s returned from Africa and will see Chan at home. He’s excited at first, until he remembers that Seo-ri is at his home right now.

Chan calls his uncle, and Woo-jin ditches the coffee he’s buying to hurry home as well. Woo-jin, Chan, and Chan’s mom race to the house, but it’s Mom who gets there first. Seo-ri answers the door. Seo-ri asks the stranger who she is, and Mom asks the same of her, just as Chan and Woo-jin both arrive home.

COMMENTS

What a… delightful fake-out. I cannot believe the show managed to trick me into believing we’d actually separate this found-family unit. I should probably be mad about the emotional whiplash, but I’m not. If I can get the satisfaction of Seo-ri’s character growth and have a scenario where they still get to live together, I’ll take it.

Seo-ri moving out was such a natural, real progression. Even though the house they are in right now is perfect, and forced proximity living quarters are the best in dramas, the show was (almost) willing to let that perfection go for Seo-ri’s character growth.

Everything up to this point has been a brief gift of a moment for Seo-ri, and she knows it. She got a chance to live in her old house, see her old dog, and discover new friends along the way. Not everything has worked out, but this was truly a chance that Seo-ri took full advantage of. In Jennifer’s views on life, Seo-ri did everything that she could to look back on this with fond memories instead of regrets, so even though her house will be torn down, and things won’t be the same again, she has memories, captured in Woo-jin’s photos.

Do you think Seo-ri was deliberately dressed as Dorothy Gale from the Wizard of Oz in these final scenes? The blue and white gingham dress might just be coincidence, but the themes of home and trying to make your way back, all while having to say goodbye to the friends you’ve met along the way, it seems too perfect to not be on purpose. I’ll miss you most of all, Scarecrow/Woo-jin.

Woo-jin’s been pushed as the developmentally stunted guy since the beginning, but when he was outside with Jennifer staring up at the tree, he seemed like such an old soul. He knows what he wants to happen, but he also feels the weight of knowing that Seo-ri doesn’t feel like she needs him as much as he feels like he needs her. He feels like he has to let her go, because asking her to stay would be selfish. For once, Chan is returned to the seventeen-year-old he truly is, begging his uncle to let Seo-ri stay, while Woo-jin stands strong as the reasonable adult.

This is the episode where roles start to switch. Chan has let his emotions take hold of him, and it’s Woo-jin who steps in to gently remind Chan that letting Seo-ri go is the best thing they can do to support her. While Chan’s desire to keep her close is entirely about protecting his own feelings, Woo-jin sees that he needs to look beyond himself and support Seo-ri’s determination to find her way to the adult she’s become while she was sleeping.

Also, those beach scenes. She’s wearing his shirt around her waist to sit on the ground! They don’t even make a big deal about it, it just happened naturally at some point. It seems so intimate, and then they share some of the darkest parts of their lives with one another. These two are so close to opening up and finally healing with each other.

I’ve been avoiding discussing Tae-rin too much, mostly because I’m still hopeful she can come around and not be hateful towards Seo-ri. Even though she’s turned cold, so far she hasn’t done anything cruel to her. Tae-rin is mostly caught up in her own feelings of doubt, so I’m hoping that Seo-ri can use her honest approach to life to win her over before things get too antagonistic.

I had started to suspect that Miss Yellow Shoes was after Jennifer last week, but even now that this seems certain, I’m still not so sure that this isn’t still related to Seo-ri and Woo-jin somehow. Everyone is so entangled with one another, I feel like just as much as this will show us more about Jennifer, it will reveal more about everyone.

Nice pick up on the gingham dress. Yes, Dorothy got lost this episode but finally found her way home. Nice.

Aww sweet Chan and his pure tears. I really hope Ahn Hyo Seop accepts that drama for a lead role!!! He’s the most amazing pure hearted “dumb” but not really dumb jock!

Also I laughed SO HARD when they showed the poster in the apartment warning people of a predator - our sweet, oblivious Chan. So much humor in a quick blink and you’ll miss it scene.

I hope for Tae-rin that she will see that it was her mother who put pression on her and not Seo Ri.

I think it's the accident that connects them all.

I like the relationship between Seo Ri and Woo Jin. Both of them are very attentive to each other and want to help. They're very cute too.

I just LOVED ❤️🧡💛💜💙 this episode. It was silly and heartwarming, immature and wise. I love how Woo-Jin and Seo-ri tease each other when they know the other is playfully lying. It’s so adorable. These two are becoming one of my favorites in kdramaland. I so want to stop Chan’s bleeding heart! But how excited he was when he saw her again was just too much for my little heart. It made me smile from ear to ear to see the whole family together again in that scene. I’m sure they all will be fine. How they’re going to explain her to his mom is going to be fun too! I can’t wait! The mystery is unfolding slowly, but it’s nit bothering me a bit. This is the show I look forward to the most of the 3 I’m watching live right now. And it was a late-comer that I didn’t think I’d have time for. Let this be a lesson to all Beanies, time will appear if you really love a show. And I really love this one.

I was impressed by seori's maturity in this episode. Although she feels sad of the years she missed, she accepts it. It takes a great deal of maturity to say that was an intermission and i was SOO moved. I dont see her as a 17 year old trapped in a 30 year old body anymore. She might be naive, but i trule think her optimism and cheerfulness are part of her core personality.

I love emotional Woojin scenes. The actors nails it. How is it that at the brginning i thought he was plain-ish looking or not my type and now he makes me swoon all the time?

As we get to see more of Woojin, Chan is showing more and more his age. My poor bean. I cant hate him. Not even his pettiness.

Haha, that’s the power of Yang Se Jong 😊

I have to say I never found him plain looking. The moment I laid my eyes on him in Duel I was intrigued. He pulled me towards him like a magnet. Of course his crazy (in a good way) performance in Duel just added to my admiration.

If I were arranging to feed someone's fish of 6 months, I'd want a face-to-face meeting to make sure about amount of food, tank maintenance, etc, etc. Would have saved some trouble, but I guess a drama has to meet its drama quota for the week.

I feel that my teenaged kids are quite like that, ie they forget to check on the details and just throw themselves into something. Seo Ri also trusted Hyun that she could check with him about his cousin if necessary. Of course, Hyun, the adult was mighty 'forgetful' (like me!!!) and more at fault than the over enthusiastic 'youngun'.

Does anybody think the house is actually going to be sold and demolished?

Thought not.

OK, then how does it get saved?
1: Woo-jin suddenly remembers he has enough cash to buy it?
2: Jenniferrrr has the cash?
3: The buyers have some special connection to the plot that I can't guess at?
4: Seo-ri finds some gold that uncle buried in the yard?

Woo-jin, Chan, Jennifer and Seo-ri tell Uncle they'll maintain it for him if he doesn't sell it. I mean, that was his issue - he was getting too old to maintain such a large house

2

Woo jin's dad or Chan's grandfather bought the house from the lead girls's Uncle, who got it from her father after he died.
:P :P

1

I vote everyone finds out the house sale was never valid at all, and now SeoRi becomes the de facto owner, with the rest of them renting from her!!! Haha but who knows. Really this house should have some pretty thick plot armor. I’d be sad to see it go it’s so unique!

I like this theory and it may even be right!!! Sounds just up a kdrama style alley way of twisting the circumstances to fit the situation. And it gives Seo Ri her due, which is what the audience wants! Win-win!!! 😆

I love Seo Ri 😭. Loved when she asked Deok-Gu if she looks like she's about 20 years old now. Loved her viewpoint that the coma was an "intermission" in her life. I love that her accepting her situation and "growing up" doesn't affect her kindness or has made her into a jaded adult. One thing I do hate: let the doctor meet her already (rip the poor actor has one scene per episode and it's just him having near-misses and looking sad)!!

I feel like the first quarter of this drama was Seo Ri "aging" up to Chan, the second quarter has been about her meeting Woo Jin's emotional maturity, and the back half will be about them growing together.

I actually didn't mind the fake out because I feel like the writer really wanted to establish that Seo Ri wasn't the same person she was when she first moved in/wanted the audience to see how her relationship with the others had evolved/needed to add some comedy?? Or maybe I'm just super whipped for this show and willing to excuse whatever dumb plots and cheap tricks they throw at me!

What is it with these side characters getting sidelined? We're halfway through and we've barely seen Hyung-tae (the doctor) or Tae-rin. Miss Yellow Shoes (who btw, I was wrong about) was in three episodes before her face was even shown. And we didn't even get a glimpse of violin ajusshi (who's being played by a well-known actor) this week.

Nice insight about the fake out being necessary to show how much Seo-ri has evolved. I love how she's reframed her situation as "an intermission", too.

I only have a basic understanding of the Korean notion of jeong (sort of a combo of love, affection, attachment, generosity, tender-heartedness, etc.), but my sense is that one of the main reasons so many of us are finding this show to be an especially heart-warming watch is that it's overflowing with jeong. (Maybe someone more familiar with Korean culture could weigh in.)

I loved the bit of her asking if she looks 20 now because I think she has mentally grown into someone in their early 20s - just graduated from college and taking their first step into real adulting and learning to balance the hopefulness of youth with the realities of adulting.

I am more than ready for Hyung-tae to meet Seo-ri. I love the entire household, Woo-jin's coworkers, and Chan's schoolmates! But I feel bad for the actors playing Hyung-tae and Rin Kim. If their scenes were cut out completely, the drama would be no less enjoyable.

I like how you've pointed out the reversals and the more than nod to The Wizard of Oz. So might Miss Yellow Shoes and Jennifer be our good and bad witches? 😆

I was thinking of Woo Jin more as the Tin Man who started off looking rusty and rigid with no heart... but perhaps he morphs into the Scarecrow with a brain and the ability to 'rule' the little household.

I was reading about the allegorical aspect of The Wizard of Oz, and about how the travelers had self doubts and thought that they needed something which the Wizard was supposed to be able to give them, but which actually they already had. I thought that was a nice analogy for Woo Jin and Seo Ri and even Tae Rin. They just need to keep on traveling on their Yellow Brick Road(s) to keep on growing as they meet friends and non-friends, overcome situations (preferably together) and eventually achieve their goals.

I've really been enjoying the music in this series. Both the violin pieces and other OSTs. I find they carry me a beyond the mere tale to a depth of delight.

And if ever there was a show of 'Near Misses', it has to be this one. I have not kept count of the number of times, we were just about to have discoveries made by our characters, but which ended up in nothing ... I believe it's numbering to around 10 times now since Episode 1!!! Were there already 3-4 near misses in this episode alone? 😵 😉

Since it was mentioned that SeoRi is Dorothy, I have been matching up the other characters in the drama to Oz. I do agree that Woo Jin is more Tin Man since he initially was cold and cut off from his feelings.
Yup. Jennifer would be Glinda. 💕 SeoRi's own gairy godmother. Not sure yet who that woman is but for now zhe can fit the Wicked Witch role. 😊
Chan could be the Lion. Due to brawn and because he has a big heart.

The Cowardly Lion due to his fear. Scarecrow who is looking for his brain.
I also love Chan and can see he can fit the scarecrow role. But maybe the Scarecrow is shared by Deok Soo and Hae Bom. 😅
But maybe there is no clearcut role for them since they can fit any of Dorothy's three companions.

About Jennifer - I don’t know if anybody else mentioned it, but I think it’s a safe bet by now to assume that she was a wife of a man who tragically died in the bus accident - the same accident Seo Ri was in. Two people died that day - her friend So Mi and a man, aged 38.

When SR’s friend who became a doctor rushed into a hospital in a day of the accident, he bumped into a pregnant lady in a red dress - it must’ve been Jennifer.

The lady with yellow shoes called Jennifer "Hwang Mi-jung" and the other casualty was a 38 year old male "Kim Tae Jin". Their titles are completely different. I thought of that too but after clarifying the names I'm in doubt or until unless it's common in Korea to have a different titles even after marriage.

Korean women (this applies to some other Asian countries too) don’t take after their husband’s surname. Even when they get married, they have their original surname. Only children take after their father’s surname.

I’d vouch for this too, and I always found in interesting that in such a patriarchal culture, they don’t require the woman to take the man’s name. I think it has to do with how important the family unit is and that trumps everything else. A woman has to be known as coming from a certain family and their status (or lack of). Good pick up on the names though, @mimu1234.

It sounds progressive and pro-womens rights on the surface but, unsurprisingly, this particular tradition has sexist roots.

Traditionally, the civil code defined family members as descendants along the male line only. A Korean woman could not take her husband's last name because she wasn't part of his bloodline. So even if the husband died, the family head position would pass to the son, instead of the wife, even if he was a baby. The whole system was based on the idea that women are subservient to men.

I do believe the Korean civil code has been revised since to be less oppressive to women, but the tradition of keeping maiden names is still there.

8

Thanks @cherryinbloom and @ally-le
After reading your comments I remember the conflict for marriage showed in "Reply 1998" as Sun-woo and Bo-ra had the same family name "Sung".
In my country mostly girls take the title of their husband family.

I like this episode because it felt like Woo Jin and SeoRi are getting a second chance to experience their missed youth. Their first festival, their train ride with the youth to join the festival, them sneaking away to the beach. 😊 it is what could've been if the accident didnt happen.i am glad they get to experience it together.

And I also observed that as Woo Jin and SeoRi start to "mature" in the last two episodes. In seems like, Rin Kim regressed to that sad teen who was eaten up by jealousy. Despite her outward grace and success, she didnt seem to grow out of that sad teen who has been poisoned by insecurity and hate. I hope she learns to overcome that so she will not be eaten up by the negative feelings.

Overall, I am happy with this episode despite the fake out. Next week, they have Woo Jin's Unni to deal with. I wonder how she will be with SeoRi.

Beach convos were really heartwarming. I cried a bit when Seo Ri talk about the intermission.
Does anyone think that SR also liked WJ in the past. I think SR intentionally asked WJ at the bus as a first approach to talk to him and be close to him. So she just blurted out random question about the destination while actually her real destination is not there. So one day when SR realize that WJ is the boy she had a crush on, and know that WJ felt guilty about the bus incident, she'll tell WJ that initially her destination is not that art hall, so even if WJ didnt tell her to stop at the next station, she would still be involved in the accident.

I pick up the drama with intention watching two eps in a week but I ended up marathoning until this ep😂

I can understand why Seo Ri attracted to Woo Jin than Chan. Because Chan always see her as 17yo girl, even though she looks and is actually 30yo woman. You can see that Chan always protective and playing around with her so she might not catch any signals. As for Woo Jin, he may ignore Seo Ri at the beginning, but he treat Seo Ri as an eccentric 30yo woman who just happened to have no experience of the real world. Woo Jin's letting Seo Ri to figure out her life is in line with his character, he grew up wounded in trauma until that he had no choice but shuts himself from everyone. His acceptance of her leaving is an act of love, he wants her to have options and made a choice that will make her happy, unlike him in the past. However Seo Ri's attraction also influenced by her that always act like same-age with both Woo Jin and Chan.

For Hyung Tae, I can see why he loves Seo Ri after all these 13 years. It is because Seo Ri really never give him a clear answer whether she likes him as a boy or not, even though she definitely never likes him more than just a friend. I can relate to his character since I have met someone like Hyung Tae once in my life. But writer please let him and Seo Ri meets. I need to see jealous Woo Jin. He he.

Why I feel like the woman in yellow shoes with Jennifer is like Kim Tae Rin with Seo Ri? But I'm not really sure about it either.

I'm guess the girl with the yellow shoes is Jennifer's daughter. My theory stands that she probably gave her away for adoption to pursue her own dreams of being a ballerina and has been regretting it since.
Chan has a crush on her, but seeing how Woo-jin and Chan behave differently, we can see that Chan's is more of a crush/infatuation where he just wants to be around her, whereas Woo-jin actually cares about her growth and well-being as a person, even if it means she is far from him.

Wait. If the yellow shoes woman is really Jennifer's daughter, she should be about 12/13 years old, yet in here she looks older, (and that was what I'm thinking if she's pregnant at 2005, unless I'm wrong about the timeline).

I am agreeing with you as for Chan's feeling is no more than a crush, meanwhile Woo Jin's feeling is something pure and beyond.

I think probably yes, especially Woojin & Seori. Woojin is someone who shuts himself, bottling all of his thoughts and feelings alone. Yet with Jennifer, he always share his meaningful thinking even though he is not 100% honest about it, (or maybe Jennifer already know his past yet she just pretends to don't know/forget). As for Seori, I don't know any of connections between them in the past, except that Jennifer already met her uncle. But isn't it strange that Jennifer is really really soft toward Seori, meanwhile she is just being like Alexa all of the time with Woojin and Chan???

5

Exactly my thoughts. I love her interaction with Woo-jin and her caring towards Seo-ri. the hug between them spoke so much between their bond.

2

Going to your point about Chan. Seo-Ri has never seen Chan as her peer. I didn't notice until these past couple of episodes, but she calls Chan, Chan Hacksan, which is loosely translated into student Chan. I think he has always felt younger for her, hence her lack of crush on Chan.

Woo Jin who lowered his guard is a boyfriend goal! WJ is really growing on me, he is so cute. The last two episodes, his character has really developed and so glad that he is comfortable around her now.
Chan is so freaking cute and all out with his love, I felt so sad seeing him crying. He always end up pulling my heartstrings. I love how the writer is depicting his feelings as real.
The yellow heels lady turned out to be Jennifer's past, not Seo Ri's aunt. I want to know their story.

And I loved the fake out with her moving out. The teary goodbyes, all the build up leading to nothing? It might seem unrealistic, but it actually felt very real. Like, I felt that it had happened to me, that there were instances in my life that felt like they were building up to something dramatic, but eventually fell flat and served not as a life-changing experience, but as a lesson.

My theories on Jennifer is partially true.

The woman in the yellow shoes I thought was related to Jennifer (a sister, possibly SR’s aunt) but it would be quite the twist to find the mystery woman to be her estranged daughter. I don’t think the uncle’s intervention in the rain was at the time of the bus accident, so I am ruling out that the other victim, 38 year old male "Kim Tae Jin” was Jennifer’s husband. But I find it curious that superstar violinist Kim Tae Rin’s name is similar to the other bus accident victim. Could Tae Rin’s grudge against SR not be just because of her talent, but that she survived the bus crash while a member of her family was killed?

The impression I have is that Jennifer was a lost, pregnant single woman in the rain. The kindness of a stranger, SR’s uncle, to give her his umbrella led her to the library, where she found the path to educate herself to be a strong and independent person.

Just before meeting Miss Yellow Shoes, Jennifer was on the phone trying to find another prospect when her first attempt to find a “rent free” apartment for SR failed. She must have a lot of wealth, knowledge and connections (with rich families and/or universities) to find students going to study overseas.

Which leads to the question of why? Is Jennifer wanting to repay the kindness of SR’s uncle by looking after SR? But would she not have done that when SR was in the hospital for 13 years?
There is a still missing puzzle piece to why Jennifer is strongly connected to SR. It could be that Jennifer is seeking her own redemption for abandoning her own child when she was young.

The episode also gave us information that SR’s hospital bill was still being automatically paid so the payor does not know SR has recovered and left the facility. So the mysterious benefactor is not the doctor-friend or Jennifer. From the scant evidence we have, SR’s uncle seems to be a kind man. His quick sale of SR’s house to flee his own creditors is probably the reason why SR hospital bill is still being paid. Since the house proceeds were SR’s money, it was probably set up in an account to auto-pay the hospital. SR may not know it, but she may still have a large sum in a bank account. I am peeved that hospital should have contacted the payor’s bank to stop the payments in order to get word back to SR’s benefactor that she had recovered.

If SR has money, then SR could ask to rent or buy her old house back. I do like the idea that SR may still have some “equity” in her old house. But it will take the return of her aunt and uncle to give her the good news. If true, I don’t think WJ’s father will sell the house, especially if WJ tells him he is no longer a wandering son and wants to live in it.

From previous episode posts, there was a question of where Chan’s father was. Some thought he was with his mother in Africa, but that does not seem to be the case. She returned to the house by herself. I don’t recall Chan ever talking about his...

Thanks for your great ideas! You're so right that "Kim Tae-jin" and "Kim Tae-rin" are too similar to be a coincidence in this everyone-is-connected drama. D'oh, I should've seen that when I mentioned Kim Tae-jin in yesterday's recap. So Kim Tae-jin could be Tae-rin's oppa since he was 10-11 years older than her.

But it's possible that he was Jennifer's husband too. In Jennifer's flashback, there was a banner in the background conveniently letting us know that the year was 2005. I haven't a clue who Miss Yellow Shoes is.

We were told in ep. 1 that both of Chan's parents were gonna be working in Africa, and I think later, there was a brief scene of the two of them together there. What irks me is that the dad says it was too much trouble to fly all the way back to take care of the house, but shouldn't he be coming back anyway to visit Chan, one of the most precious sons in the world who's still in high school? However, his parents are probably wonderful people who are just the victims of a poorly-constructed plot device.

I love your theory that Seo-ri has some sort of trust fund that's been set up to auto-pay the hospital bills. Wouldn't it be great if she could buy the house back?!

I don’t think the woman in yellow is her daughter. Jennifer was pregnant in 2005, so her daughter should be only around 12/13. If you watch closely a flashback scene, you can see teenage Hyung Tae bumping into her in front of a library - hence, it must’ve been 2005.

TR still doesn't know why SR dropped out of the music world and ended up working as an assistant in a company. Her grudge seems to stem from her insecurities due to her mother's ambition for her (whether she shares the same ambition or was forced into it is not clear) and the presence of the rival whom she acknowledges as a better violinist (but this goes against what her mother has been telling her thus her agitation).

Thanks for the recap....
So it was another beautiful episode it was.
Am so glad that you observed how WJ shirt was wrapped around SR when she sat on sand... as you said it was soooo intimate to look at.. at first i couldn't concentrate on their talks cause seeing her having his shirt around made me so happy... thinking how comfortable these 2 are together. But then i rewinded to read the subs of their talk.

This whole episode was so well done. Each and every one bringing out their self from the closet of past. SR sharing her comatose past with WJ and how intelligently she accepted that "coma" was just an intermission for her (just like we have coma in our writing) and not an ending (a full stop). i admired her guts and determination to work even hard to find her path in life... and as WJ mentioned she is truly an Adult now, a true adult.

WJ poor guy finally he had the chance to let his emotions loose even just a bit. And i am sure he must have felt much lighter to share with SR knowing he wont be judged by her. And that moment felt like after an eternity which these 2 people were waiting to meet and share each other's heart.

Chan.. as you said is back to being an teenager. but i loved him the moment he crossed the bridge, ran heavily Just to meet SR. thats exactly how teenagers do when they see their crush far away. he still has long way to grow and i pray he finds a girl who loves and he loves her too.

SR giving everyone gifts. thats such a lovely gesture by her. Even just after a month she was so thoughtful to give them what they need. Thats the essence of the age she was when she got in coma. The innocence and purity of teenage age is still alive in her and that makes her one lovely human being. And thats what i learned from this episode we should never let that innocence sleep within us cause thats what keep us happy soul despite the hardships as grownup adults we will face in life.

Yellow Heel lady... mystery. a big yellow mystery. I just pray she does not hurt anyone in the house.

Best reaction for gift. Robomaid ditching her black sandles to wear SR's giftes slipper.

Best comic moment. WJ all confused and embarrassed how to make SR come along with him to beach.

Best romantic moment - WJ asking SR to come live with him TOGETHER

Best episode so far.. this one....

bottom line...i am loving his show with all my heart and soul... despite doubting at start whether ill watch it till the end or not.
so lesson here..never judge a drama just by its premise. do give 4 episodes a try before deciding to drop.

@Official Mrs. Lee Jun Hyuk...30 but 17 Forever
I really liked the 'intermission' analogy. It reminded me so much of the mention of the football game's 'half-time' in Because This Life is Our First. In the latter show, I was so disappointed that nothing came of mentioning it. I felt that the writer meant to elaborate on it and have the OTP come back together after a half-time break, but either they ran out of time or the writer was interrupted in that train of story.

I trust that in this drama, the intermission will really be just an intermission for Seo Ri, and that not only will she get her chance to play her mum's violin properly, but to resolve the issue of her family and home, and how she will move forward in life. Seeing the challenges and obstacles in life as an intermission, a chance to take stock, and with more to look forward to is such a wonderfully positive way to view RL. If for nothing else, for this alone, this show has been worth it.

Also I like what you have highlighted about not losing the innocence of our youth, especially to cynicism. We can enjoy more of the little things and the giving and receiving with the best intentions, if we can drop the jadedness from our minds.

I agree that although the movement plotwise has taken a long time starting, the evident character development, and the sublimal positive messages have made this an engaging and satisfying watch, even at this stage of the show. 😄

sorry for replying late. i just forgot which thread i posted the comment and where to find your response (i am not a regular poster to recap threads).

thank you very much for agreeing about the intermission analogy... i too feel so strongly here that we will surely get a good full time game in this drama. as we have not even half episode mark yet. there is a lot to be done. and i hope it happens and we will have SR violin playing as one significant factor to it.

And regarding the innocence..yes thats what i feel watching this show. cause in real life people are so self centered that they hardly lool at others let alone buying some small gifts... so the SR's character is i feel we all can learn from it (not the extremities but at least the innocence) and how to connect with people.

Thanks again.

There's no chance at this stage for it to happen, but I associate the actress playing Rin Kim so much with the hateful and/or tiresome romantic rival role that she makes me cringe whenever she comes on screen.

I feel for you, Aotearoa Ajeossi-- that's gotta suck big time that your bias's role was changed so much for the worse. Thank you for mentioning I place where I can see Wang Ji-won shine-- I'll add The Swan Club to my list.

While it's almost a sure thing that Tae-rin's behavior will get worse before it gets better, I really don't think her screen time will be entirely negative. This drama is all about growth and healing. In the last couple of episodes, we've seen her insecurity grow, and she did some minor sabotaging in this ep. This drama exaggerates the ways in which characters need to change (Woo-jin wasn't just prickly, he was an anti-social caveman; Seo-ri had some tantrums fitting of a two-year-old; Jennifer was so unemotional, we thought she might be a robot in the beginning), so poor Tae-rin's poised to do some pretty hateful things before she gets her redemption arc. But the fact that before she's done anything truly villainous, the drama showed us younger Tae-rin being the victim of a tiger mother (so that we understand her inner desperation), indicates to me that she'll grow and heal, too. Also, it seems really unlikely that Kim Tae-rin isn't related to Kim Tae-jin, the other fatality in the multi-vehicle accident-- I can't help but suspect that that will be part of her healing arc.

But if it turns out that Tae-rin doesn't get to grow and be redeemed, then I'll protest, too!

Ooh you're right, they did give her a backstory, with tiger mom. So yeah, maybe the character will be redeemed. I hope so, for the actress's sake. And for Aotearoa Ajeossi. ;)

@stuartnz (Aotearoa Ajeossi)

Aww, I can hear in your "voice" that (as you said) you are as fearful as KTR. I get it-- you've been burned by those other shows, and are afraid to trust that it might be different this time.

I can't promise you it will be 'cause I'm not privy to what the writer has planned for KTR. But I can tell you that I've watched a LOT of k-dramas over the years, and based on the patterns that I've seen, I'm confident that KTR will get a redemption arc, although it may be a short-but-sweet one. I know she didn't get one in DLiL or HS-- however, 30but17 is a totally different, much fluffier, animal. It largely revolves around the healing of SR, WJ, and Jennifer's traumas from the past. Now we know KTR was also traumatized (by her mother)-- I can't see this exceptionally kind show being cruel enough to ignore Tae-rin's trauma. I think SR will see the desperation underneath Tae-rin's actions and won't give up until Tae-rin feels better.

I don't think lack of screen time at this point is proof of anything-- the doctor has had even less screen time. And we still have 12 eps. to go.

As @ysbee said, I hope for your sake, and for WJW's, that things will be different this time.

While I absolutely loved the interactions & adventures of the little family in the house, I'm feeling that the mysteries of the show keeps on dragging. I'm not particularly too interested in that, but the show focuses a lot on them, with an "almost reveal" in every ep, if they do it lightly, then it won't matter, cuz the focus should be the present & not the mysteries of the past weighing it down, especially when it's not a very big reveal.

the mysteries and the "almosts" is what kept me from giving this show a chance. I'm all caught up now but I was hoping to avoid this drama long enough so that the dragging doesn't annoy me.
well, that didn't work. but 17/30 has a lot more to offer when it comes to relationships than the fated encounters it's fixated on.

Thank you for the recap @abirdword!

I wish they hadn't ended this episode on the note of Mom's arrival, because it seems to imply that they'll spend some time on that conflict, while I really want to move on to seeing Seo Ri get her musical abilities back and resolving everything that surrounds the accident. But I really liked this episode for all the ways it showed Seo Ri and Woo Bin getting closer - for I'd sort of been a little uncomfortable with the idea of their being a pair - when she was mentally still seventeen. But it's becoming clearer and clearer how mature she is for her age, and since he's shut himself off from the world - they still seem to meet on the same emotional middle-ground, which makes their pairing quite convincing, and has me waiting eagerly to see what happens!

That beach scene and how Woojin handled Seo-ri moving out were some incredibly standout moments and moved the drama from just fluff and puppies. I loved this episode and the preceding one so much.

I also enjoyed the scene of Hyun telling Seori about the amazing apartment where the fees have been prepaid and is only a 5 minute walk away from work. It was almost meta the way Woo-jin was like "is it possible for such a nice place to exist?" and then later for Chan to go "why is this place so nice?" I wanted to say: "Yes it is. You're in a drama!"

Please, please, please give the doctor friend of Seo Ri a chance since he'd been waiting for her for 13 years! He needs to meet her asap! I feel really really bad for him. And it seems like he can't even be labelled as a second lead since we have Chan for that. 😢 Anyway, I'm still loving everything about the show! Yang Sejong is doing things to my heart that he wasn't able to do during Temperature of Love. I'm obssessed! Haha.
