Seo Ye Ji was on an express elevator to A-list actress status. She had the look, elegant charm, popularity and acting skills to quickly rise in lead roles in TV series and films. But an avalanche of scandals has cost her the lead in a new series, Island, and many of her commercial endorsements. It shows that what we think of an actor after viewing their films and series, watching their variety/talk appearances or reading their interviews is not “knowing” what an actor is like in real life. They are professional performers. Their heavily marketed images of stars, their media play promotions and cultured social media posts feed into the illusion of who we think they are. Or maybe what we want to believe who they are. Whether it is true or not or a shade of gray does not matter. When the illusion bubble bursts, the fall out is wide, great and career altering. People may project what they think their stars are like, their relationships, their perfect lifestyle of fame and fortune but sadly we rarely see their real character.

Baeksang must be regretting nominating Seo Ye-ji for Best Actress. I just hope Oh Jung-se wins his well-deserved Best Supporting Actor award despite the Seo Ye-ji cloud hanging over It's Okay to Not Be Okay (and despite winning the same category last year). Two Best Actor nominees Kim Soo-hyun and Lee Jun-ki worked with her, but Shin Ha-kyun should win hands down unless he takes the Daesang. (My heart belongs to Song Joong-ki, but it's an honor to be nominated.)

If her scandal had broke earlier, Seo Ye-ji would have never been nominated like Jo Byung-gyu and Kim Dong-hee who I think were shoo-ins for Best New Actor nominations. Even Nam Yoon-soo was nominated for Extracurricular. I'm rooting for Lee Do-hyun but expect the winner to be Song Kang due to his popularity.

Why should/would her scandals affect the winning chances of the two actors who worked with her? What have they got to do with it? They both worked hard and brilliantly pulled off the roles they're nominated for. If things were reversed and two actresses/women paid the price for an actor's/man's scandals they had nothing to do with, the feminist brigade would be baying for blood. Tsk-tsk.

With or without her scandals, Shin Ha-kyun is the runaway winner of the Best Actor award. Like how with or without her scandals, Kim So-yeon is the runaway winner of the Best Actress award. It all comes down to who wins the Daesang.

I think Oh Jung-se deserves the Best Supporting Actor award, so his all comes down to whether Baeksang will give him the same award two years in a row.

I'm only just catching up on this sordid mess, and wow. If the story is to be believed, SYJ and ex-bf KJH are both too immature and controlling to be professionals in an industry where all their actions are under constant scrutiny. That's going to be a bitter pill to swallow for the actors and for the fans.

I am sure that most of the accusations are overblown, but that does not mean they never happened. Korean netizens can be pretty brutal, and are often far too prone to run with half-baked rumors and accusations. In the past I have seen a lot of "jump on the bandwagon" in Korean social media when it comes to celebs - in one case a claim that one made about sexual assault that was later proven to be totally false (the poster was 5 years apart and in a different city).

I always believe that people are different when they are in a toxic relationship. It brings out the worst in you. I definitely am not going to sit and judge them for what transpired in their relationship (although a lot of netizens are) but it is a problem when it affects people outside of their relationship.
Stories of her narcissism and many more and blowing up on the internet just in the moment she got nominated for a Baeksang. Stories if staff members calling her a "diva" and "rude" and one even said she made them go buy cigarettes for her (?). The standards for western artists vs for korean artists are so different. I am the same person who laughed at Cardi B hitting someone on a show, calling the Kardashian and their toxicity "iconic", I watched people worshipping Mariah Carey for being a "diva" (sometimes just plain unprofessional) and did the same et cetra. This perfection that is expected out of these celebrities are insane and I'm honestly frustrated.
Hoping to see Ye Ji soon! I really hope she wins that, although looking at everything I even believe they might change the winner (if she was intended to win). Ugh

Over the years of drama-watching, I’ve come to realise that I have quite a specific taste in dramas. I like modern-day dramas about mature grown-ups acting like grown-ups who date other grown-ups. I like age-appropriate casting. I like complex, multi-faceted female characters. I like male characters who aren’t (borderline) abusive stalkers.

For the longest time, cdramas weren’t my thing but recently, I’ve found some that fitted the above criteria and those I really, really liked. These are all from 2020 (also all set in Shanghai). Maybe this is a new trend?

1) The one that started it off for me - and led me to search for more dramas like this is Nothing But Thirty . Three women about to hit thirty go through relationship and work issues.
2) A drama about estate agents in Shanghai: I Will Find You A Better Home . Don’t let the large episodes count put you off. An ace main pairing (who both have no money for the majority of the drama!), interesting ‘cases of the week’ (how do you sell a flat that someone’s been murdered in), all interspersed with Shanghai property porn. (on YouTube)
3) If recent drama events made your head spin, We Are All Alone might give you some insight in what’s going on behind the scenes. A dark & bleak (or maybe brutally honest?) look at the entertainment industry through the eyes of a high-powered Talent Manager. I found it all disturbingly believable and quite a few times I thought: wow this explains a lot. (on iQIYI)

All of these I’ve loved from beginning to end. If there are others like these out there, let me know! As a side-effect, I have become a huge fan of the 45-min episode length (really 35-40 mins if you skip the end credits) and maybe that’s why I’m suffering a bit of a kdrama slump at the moment…

Coming of age is better.
I had mentioned it in 2020 - op ed are spoilers so avoid and u save 5 minutes right there and then u have lot of side characters with good screentime, lot of chit-chat from these side characters, flattery and actions that merely there to fill the time and can be avoided and u become an editor yourself - chop here and there and you get 20episodes and you not even miss much.

Finding home is remake of Japanese drama of Keiko whose new drama gonna start airing soon. And the subject of the drama is real and packs a punch so its very much expected that any average adaptation of it would appeal larger part of audience.

I'm barely into it, but like what I've seen so far of The First Half of My Life.
Yes, I can some how watch multiple eps that are 30 to 45 minutes long easier than one k drama ep of an hour and 10 minutes.

I like all these elements in Chinese contemporary dramas too but they are actually hard to come by. One show of adults being mature was You are My Hero, I enjoyed it thoroughly because of the leads and their equality but it isn't groundbreaking.
Also I'd like to know about The First Half of My life because I watched a little bit of it a while back and it seemed like it was shot in a time when China was still adopting these concepts of equality but was still not there so the male lead was a little off putting to me and a certain dialogue made me quit it. Though that means I didn't watch all of it so I'm not sure if it got better. I've been trying to watch Thirty but Nothing since when it was released but region restrictions didn't let that happen. How about the Twenties counterpart, Twenty your life on? It isn't as mature and is more of a naive, youthful take but still with interesting different females and the show keeps them first till the end.
The Cdrama format is so bingeable and watchable that kdramas look excessively long now.

I supposed you meant Chinese, so I will take the risk of recommending you my favorites:
-Le coup de Foudre
-My amazing boyfriend
-Go Ahead
-Dating in the kitchen
-Go go squid
-My little happiness
-Put your head on my shoulders
And most recently: today watching the finale:
-You are my hero

I hope you like my suggestions!

I am watching the Le Coup de Foudre right now and I am enjoying it. It’s a nice feel good slice-of-life rom-com based on a true story (or so I’ve heard).

However, that filter they put on some of the shots is a complete eyesore. Usually the use of filters don’t bother me at all but in this case, I wish I could have been in that post-production meeting to say « oh h*ll nah »! It makes the image all flat and blurry and the lighting all funky.

But it’s a flaw that I can forgive because the story and characters are endearing. The acting is good too.

Thanks for the recommendations Cloggie. It seems lately the only modern cdramas I've started have been decidedly too young for my current tastes.

Also, yes, the shorter episode lengths are a definite draw.

aw, 2 faves of mine there: I will find you a better home, and We are all alone. I don't watch many cdrama compare to kdrama and jdrama, since I usually watch cdrama for wuxia series only. but the 2 above (together with Dating in the kitchen) are the trio modern-setting drama I enjoy so much during its airing. For the Better Home and All Alone, I found the storylines as engaging, and its potray of 2 professions (property agent and entertainment agent) as believable, and I really like how the romance shows a mature relationship: the couple encourage each other and has each other's back, and they're both brainy,,love them! :))
Other drama that has setting on property agent is the VIU Original's Who Sell the Brick in Hongkong. It is not a flashy drama, instead it's a quite bitter depiction of house deficiency problem for Hongkongers (which some media have reported it) but the humour is there (warning: I found myself close my eyes for the graphic toilet jokes, but the context fits for such jokes so that I found it was enough to just closing my eyes but not quitting to watch the whole drama).
last note: I noticed that @cloggie listed youtube as place to watch the Better Homes, but if anyone has access to WeTv, it's there as well, so is Dating in the Kitchen.

I love those 'mature relationships' so much! You know: actually talk about your problems and work with your partner to overcome them. Also, I liked that in both dramas it took a while for the couple to get together (in episode terms) but once they'd made that decision, there was no noble idiocy, no stupid misunderstandings or random break-ups.

I'm going to check out Dating in the Kitchen too!

I’ve never paid attention to the Baeksang awards before either but I was curious to see if Lee Seung Gi would get nominated for Mouse because it’s clearly a change of pace for him - I didn’t think he would because his character isn’t really doing much in the first third of Mouse, and he wasn’t ...and I was still kind of disappointed.

(He did get nominated for the variety performer category in part for Busted 3, and it is a mystery to me why anyone would get nominated for that show. It’s hard work to watch. I haven’t managed to finish it).

Anyway. Kairos was great! Awards shows no measure of quality!

As an Indian fan of K-dramas, this news came as a surprise to me:
It seems Suzy Bae (the popular K-drama & k-pop celebrity) is set to become the first South Korean actress to ever star in an Indian movie...

Link:
https://stanfordartsreview.com/2021/03/09/bae-suzy-to-act-in-indian-movie-opposite-ram-charan/

It's like two worlds clashing for me... Indian cinema & Korean drama :)

Actually what surprised me more was that the Indian movie producer/director took the effort to reach out to Suzy Bae.

Usually, in Indian movies if they want to cast an East Asian character, they will pick some actor from a Northeast state like Assam or Manipur (as they look similar to East Asians) and teach him a few words of the relevant East Asian language to utter during shooting - all for a very paltry wage.

But in this case they have reached out to Suzy Bae - a top Korean actress - who would have definitely demanded much higher wages for her role. I think this surely means the Indian filmmaker is aware of the k-pop/K-drama wave in India & the fact that Suzy Bae probably has a pretty strong fan-base here. It definitely sounds very interesting to me.

Oh yes, it’s definitely a function of the Hallyu wave finally hitting India. I just expected a true crossover to start smaller, I guess.

Interesting that this might be a South Indian film too, and not necessarily Bollywood.

2

but on the other hand South has history of importing light skinned heroines, a lot of Bolly actresses started there. And Ram Charan family is loaded so they have money to pay Suzy and give themsleve the edege. Usually Southern movies don't have the worldwide audience like Bolly ones.

2

Yes, there's a general obsession with fair skin in South India, but apparently limited only to women. Sigh. (This is probably true across India, now that I think about it).

It's true that South Indian movies are not as well known globally, but that's unfortunate, because the films made in South India are often better than Bollywood films.

That's interesting! Thanks for sharing.

The web series 'How to be Thirty' has finished, which means its now set up for a binge watch. It was frustrating to watch while airing because the short 20 min episodes left you unsatisfied and the odd air dates threw off the routine of viewing. Now you can sit and quickly binge the whole short series at your leisure.

Hello, Beanies! Happy Friday!

Things have been weird where I live because of yet another case of police violence resulting in the shooting of an unarmed person of color. The resulting protests have been mostly peaceful, but we had two days of curfew this past week, and there is this sense of being constantly on the edge.

Meanwhile, we're dealing with a sudden ant infestation in our home. I'm not generally weird about insects, but it's bad and is starting to give me nightmares.

I've been trying to calm myself down watching old k-dramas. I'm about halfway through Goong, but I'm not sure how I feel about it just yet. I'm also going to take the weekend to catch up on Vincenzo and Mouse.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Naverilla - elders still have dreams.

Oh Master, aka Oh My Ladylord (although Landlady makes more sense). Two decent but silly beaus, one smart woman!

Taxi Driver is intense. Law school, I’m not sure about, will give it a couple more episodes.

Finished Hello! Me, the two Ha Nis story was well done. The romance was iffy.

I love my weekly K-entertainment variety shows and music shows: Immortal Songs (the Rock ‘n Roll special was fabulous); 1N2D; Masked Singer always has surprise singers that are thrilling to hear; Friends is a combination of Heart Signal seasons 2 and 3 - it’s fun to catch up with the cast members; Radio Star is my fav talk show these days; Master of the House - I hope it gets back on track after the failed failure theme imo; Law of the Jungle aka celebs diving for food at night in the cold sea; the Manager - this is very entertaining as they keep the pace high energy and fun; love naggers is a bit of a snooze; there’s a new show called Change My Home - after 1 episode I think they need to get in a professional helper on site for each team; Yu Huiyeol Sketchbook is nearing 600 eps and is a quality music show where singers are interviewed and perform on stage; ; weekly Idol MCs Kwanghee and Eunhyuk are such a charming team; Home Alone has its own drawing you in, well there are more but I love them all!

It can warm up anytime, weather! This summer gal can’t take lingering snow flurries and gray rainy skies! Still I’ll find a way to have a good weekend, and you do the same! ❤️☮️

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Today it occurred to me that my exam is taking place in two weeks!😱Of course I knew it was the 30th of April, but the last time I checked that seemed so far away…😲

Before I start panicking about this l would like to take this moment to remind myself that things are a lot better now than last time. Exactly three months ago I was burying my grandmother and worrying about other sick loved ones while preparing for my first exam with formation notes that did not make any sense at the time. My loved ones and my mental health are better now. Revising and summarizing the formation notes went more smoothly this time, and I got to put theory into practice more often.

I also found out at work today that most of my current tasks will cease around the same time to make way for the start of the new work year and the summer vacation, which means that those tasks and formations will not resume for a while.

I have at least two months of weekends and evening naps waiting for me, I cannot wait for them!☺️

I was sick this week and watched the whole first season of New Journey to the West in one day. I have no regrets.

Also, I went to the beach (when I was well) with my girls and a good friend who is about to move to the States (It’s hard to imagine why that would be a good move right now but it’s what they want so 🤷‍♀️). It’s Autumn here now and I was expecting it to be freezing but it was really warm and we went paddling in the sea. It was lovely, but a little sad because it might be the last time we do something like that together.

It was very laid back while being hilarious. Sometimes K variety goes over the top in comedy hence I loved the laid back while being hilarious approach.
