Sisyphus: Episode 1

JTBC’s 10th anniversary special drama has arrived, and the first episode of Sisyphus plows out the gate at lightning speed. Chases, crashes, and life-threatening events all happen within the hour as our cheeky genius engineer and mysterious woman on a mission face dangers and survive against all odds. Something nefarious is happening underfoot in this world, but the more our hero learns, the less he seems to truly understand.

EPISODE 1 RECAP

A blue light pulses in the back as a man wakes his daughter, KANG SEO-HAE (Park Shin-hye). Inside what looks like a futuristic bunker, people line up on either side of the pair, grabbing suitcases and waiting for their turn to be marked. A guard comes around to give Seo-hae her number, but only for her since Dad isn’t going.

Before she leaves, Dad orders Seo-hae to repeat the advice he drilled into her: first, run as soon as she arrives and don’t get caught; second, trust no one; and third, never meet Han Tae-sool. She asks what will happen to Mom if she follows the third rule, but Dad doesn’t budge: “Everyone dies.”

With tears streaming down her face, Seo-hae refuses to go without him, but Dad tells her that the new place will have lots of food and even fresh fruit. Ignoring the guard badgering them to hurry, Dad makes her promise to be happy, and Seo-hae nods.

The blue light flashes a bright white, and Seo-hae wakes up on a pile of garbage next to a train track. After stealing some nearby laundry, she grabs her suitcase and walks along the rocky road until she arrives at an empty train station.

A buzzing noise catches her attention, and Seo-hae looks up in shock as a drone aims a spotlight on her. Suddenly, the lights turn on, and a crowd of suited people aim their weapons at her. She dashes underneath a train, but as she makes her escape, her pursuers spot her and give chase.

Lugging her suitcase, Seo-hae weaves through the trains, but the pursuers use their machines to find her. Locating the area with the highest reading, they approach the underside of a train with their guns raised, but Seo-hae is above them, not below. She slinks on top with her suitcase in tow, and despite her pursuers circling in on her, Seo-hae sits for a moment to feel the breeze.

Inside a plane, a first-class passenger yells at a flight attendant over a bowl of ramyun. He orders her to eat his leftovers, but another passenger films the entire exchange and intervenes. The jerk passenger grunts at the interloper, and the man introduces himself as the hotshot on the cover of “Eorbes” magazine, CEO of Quantum and Time HAN TAE-SOOL (Jo Seung-woo).

Tae-sool casually flirts with the flight attendant before putting the jerk passenger in his place and returns to his seat where his older brother HAN TAE-SAN (Heo Joon-seok) snaps a photo of him. As Tae-san rambles about something he read in the news, he asks why Tae-sool is ignoring him, and Tae-sool replies, “Because you’re dead.”

After taking his pills, Tae-sool looks over at the now-empty seat, lost in thought, when the plane lurches forward. The captain makes an announcement about turbulence, but right then, an object hits the plane, sending the captain hurling towards the glass. A second object flies by—looking eerily like a body—and the plane makes its dangerous descent.

Tae-sool realizes that something is wrong and gets up from his seat to check it out. In the mayhem, a suitcase falls on top of him, and he falls to the ground. Memories of his past flash by in a blur as he loses consciousness, but Tae-sool hears his brother call his name and fights to stay awake.

Wincing through the pain, Tae-sool stumbles into the cockpit and revives the copilot who mumbles about a person. Using duct tape, he fixes the hole in the glass which at least allows them to breath. Unfortunately, the plane is still falling at a dangerous speed, and the control panel lost electricity.

With only three and half minutes before their untimely end, Tae-sool starts tearing apart the cockpit to restore power to the control panel. Amidst the chaos, his phone rings, and Tae-sool answers a call from his friend and business partner KIM SEUNG-BOK (Tae In-ho).

Seung-bok scolds him for missing the board meeting, but Tae-sool has a bigger problem on his hand: a plane is about to crash into Seoul. Seung-bok tells him to stop joking, but a quick online search verifies his claim.

Switching the call to video, Tae-sool orders his friend to record their conversation and recites his will. He is donating half his wealth to charity while the other half will go to the company’s research funds. As for his penthouse, he’ll leave that to Seung-bok, and his bodyguard Yeo Bong-sun gets his cars.

Tae-sool also has a private task for Seung-bok, telling him about the safe in his closet that needs to be destroyed. Since he might die, Tae-sool makes one last confession to his friend: he was the one who went on that trip with his ex-girlfriend. Pfft.

While the board members murmur about their missing CEO, Seung-bok turns on the news and informs everyone of Tae-sool’s predicament. The plane zooms by the office building, and inside the cockpit, Tae-sool prepares for their rough landing.

As he holds the wires in his hands, Tae-san appears in the back and tells him that he will die without proper safety equipment. Tae-sool quips back that they will get to see each other soon and presses the exposed wires to a magnet just as time runs out.

Scenes of Tae-sool and Tae-san from their childhood to their young adult years flash on screen as people wheel Tae-sool away. Gasping, he wakes up in a hospital bed… one month after the accident. The news covers the story of the CEO’s miraculous recovery, and the public hails him as a hero.

Resting at home, Tae-sool reads one of the many fan letters sent to him, but Seung-bok is unamused by his lax attitude. He tosses him an envelope containing the board’s decision to axe Tae-sool if he continues to harm the company and begs him to attend future meetings.

Tae-sool asks what troubles he caused, so Seung-bok pulls out a drawer containing all of his pills. He calls him a drug addict who needs therapy and tells him to pull himself together. Seung-bok knows his friend is a good person who would risk his life for others, but Tae-sool says that he never intended to save all those people.

Tae-sool attends a counseling session with Dr. KIM SEO-JIN (Jung Hye-in), expecting nothing more than a quick chat and prescription. However, the board requested reports on his progress, and Seo-jin tells Tae-sool that he will need to stay the full amount.

He decides to humor her, pointing out that she was the one who dumped him, but Seo-jin reminds him that he was the one who went on a vacation with an idol. He admits defeat, and Seo-jin continues their session.

She asks about his older brother, and immediately, the carefree attitude disappears as Tae-sool puts a stop to her questions. Seo-jin pushes forward, asking if he regrets his last moments with Tae-san, and Tae-sool thinks back to that evening.

While Tae-sool attended a celebratory party for his company, Tae-san interrupted the festivities with his frantic cries. Tae-sool stepped out to talk with him, but smelling the alcohol on his breath, he ignored his brother’s warnings about people with suitcases from different worlds.

Fed up with his brother’s antics, Tae-sool pushed him to the ground and threw him an envelope filled with cash. As Tae-sool took his place on stage, Tae-san walked the streets alone, giving up the money to a homeless man.

Bong-sun notices Tae-sool’s foul mood after his counseling session, but since the latter doesn’t want to talk about it, he drives in silence until they reach the house. As Bong-sun pulls up, a man jumps in front of the car, nearly causing an accident.

Tae-sool recognizes the beat-up man as the copilot and wonders what happened to him. The copilot asks if he is part of the Control Bureau and looks around nervously. When Tae-sool looks confused by the question, the copilot hands him a USB and runs away.

At home, Tae-sool plugs the USB into his computer and watches the footage from the plane’s black box. He jumps back in shock when the suitcase hits the plane, and then seconds later, another more pressing object catches his attention: a human body. He zooms in on the person, and despite the blurry image, he is convinced that it is his brother.

Meanwhile, a restaurant owner closes up shop for the night but notices a few missing bills. He accuses his employee SUN (Chae Jong-hyub) for stealing, but Sun vehemently denies it. However, as soon as the owner leaves, Sun takes out the stolen cash and giggles to himself.

While tidying up the restaurant, Sun talks with someone over the phone and promises to send them money. As he laments his fate, he overhears something rustling around the garbage and charges toward the sound expecting stray cats.

He freezes when he spots Seo-hae digging through the trash and asks what she is doing. Brandishing his kitchen knife, he wonders if she is a foreigner, but Seo-hae quickly turns the tables as she disarms him and threatens him with his own weapon.

Demanding food, Seo-hae gains entry into the restaurant where she scarfs down noodles and eats bananas whole—peel and all. Sun calls the police to report the strange woman, but one glare from Seo-hae sends shivers down his spine, forcing him to hang up.

Resigned to his odd predicament, Sun continues his work and watches the lottery drawing on tv. When his first two numbers don’t match, he crumples up his ticket, but his ears perk up when Seo-hae correctly guesses the rest of the numbers.

In his haste, Sun changes the channel as he approaches Seo-hae, but her attention turns to the news report about Tae-sool. As she whispers his name, she starts flickering, and the electricity in the room goes out. When the lights return, Sun finds Seo-hae unconscious on the floor with a nosebleed.

The next morning, she wakes up in Sun’s room and quickly searches for her suitcase. After making sure her stuff is all there—particularly her blue, glowing jars—Seo-hae sighs in relief and takes out an old journal and a locket.

During breakfast, Sun teaches Seo-hae how to eat a banana and cautiously hands her a lottery ticket, hoping for another miracle like last night. Unfortunately for our sticky-fingers friend, Seo-hae has more important business and asks him to call Tae-sool.

Tae-sool obtains a report on the flight accident, and after running some calculations, he deduces the location of his goal to Gimpo. In the morning, he skirts his duties as CEO and drives out to an empty field by himself. Grabbing some flags, he follows the map he made and places the markers to outline the perimeter of the calculated area.

Flashing back to the counseling session, Seo-jin warned him against avoiding his problems, and Tae-sool snapped, confessing that he regretted that moment every day. After the party, he rushed to the hospital only to be met with his brother’s unrecognizable dead body. The only thing left was Tae-san’s bag, and Tae-sool broke down when he found a photo of them inside his notebook.

Tae-sool told Seo-jin that he missed Tae-san every day, and no matter how much he knew that the past couldn’t change, it never eased his pain. He pleaded with Seo-jin for his medicine since the pain would kill him otherwise.

Sun calls the Quantum and Time customer service line for Seo-hae, and though she can’t reach Tae-sool directly, she does get transferred to a voice recording where she leaves a message for him. She warns him about the people chasing after him and tells him not to trust anyone.

Elsewhere, the copilot returns to his car, unaware of the leak coming from the bottom. Before he starts the engine, he receives a call from a reporter and sets up an appointment to meet today.

Back at Sun’s place, Seo-hae flips open the journal to an entry dated August 13, 2020. It says not to open the suitcase, and Seo-hae passes along the message to Tae-sool. She tells him to wait until she finds him, but the recording ends since she reached the time limit.

Standing in the field, Tae-sool stumbles across a suitcase and sees the lock. He remembers his first Quantum and Time office his brother bought for him and recalls Tae-san’s words that day: “All of my passwords are your birthday.”

Meanwhile, the copilot stares at his family photo as tears pool in his eyes. He turns the key to his car, and instantly, the vehicle blows up.

Despite how crazy this all seems, Tae-sool wonders if it is really Tae-san and inputs his birthday into the lock. When he hears the click, he lets out a sigh and leans back as he cautiously opens the suitcase.

COMMENTS

What an interesting and atmospheric first entry into the world of Sisyphus. The first episode creates enough tension and mystery to draw in its viewers without feeling too bare or confusing. Though there is still much to explore, the first episode concentrates on its leads and familiarizing its audience to them. While the main entities and plot are still hidden, the show reveals just enough to put its viewers into Tae-sool’s shoes as he stands on the precipice of discovering a well-kept secret that’s bound to shake his world. Exactly what this secret might be, your guess is as good as mine, but clearly, not all is as they appear.

The majority of this episode was dedicated to introducing Han Tae-sool, the genius (wannabe) playboy who hides his pain behind his devil-may-care attitude. He is cheeky and reckless but he is also courageous and sharp. Immediately, the show establishes him as the hero, and we watch him come to the aid of a flight attendant who’s being harassed by a passenger. If that wasn’t enough, he then saves an entire airplane while maintaining his impish smile and humor. However, Tae-sool nurses a grieving heart, and from the (rather unethical) counseling scene, he still feels guilt and regret over his brother’s death. Since it’s only the beginning, the show gives a brief glimpse into the brothers’ relationship, and somewhere down the line, a rift formed between them. From Tae-sool’s perspective, it appears as if he turned away from Tae-san and chose the life of success over family, which somehow led to his brother’s death. He blames himself for not being kind that day as if he could have saved Tae-san if he kept him at the party, but I doubt the truth is that simple.

Tae-san’s warnings that day sounded like delusional conspiracy theories, but with everything that has happened so far, it seems that he was the truly sane one. It’s too early to believe the body in the sky was Tae-san since Tae-sool is seeing apparitions of his brother everywhere, and the image was much too blurry to identify. However, the birthday password couldn’t have been a coincidence which means Tae-san is connected to these series of events. Since the body was unrecognizable, there’s a chance for hyung to be alive, which raises even more questions about Tae-san and why everyone is looking for Tae-sool.

Several hints were dropped throughout the episode about time travel, and even for those who weren’t aware of the synopsis, time travel probably popped up in your head as a possible explanation for Seo-hae’s appearance. The future looked grungy with hordes of people waiting to return to the past, which suggests that their world is in worse shape than ours. However, judging from the scene where Seo-hae flickered in the restaurant, her presence in the current timeline isn’t stable, and since people are chasing her, maybe she isn’t supposed to be here at all. Unlike Tae-sool, the show revealed very little about Seo-hae except for the fact that she’s on a mission: meet Tae-sool and intervene. She ignored her dad’s advice, but from their brief conversation, it seems that our hero is linked to her mom’s survival. Though we know very little about Seo-hae, I like the concept of a female guardian angel ready to kick some butt and save the hero. While Tae-sool is capable of protecting himself with the use of his big brain, I doubt he’ll stand much of a chance in physical confrontations. Fortunately, Seo-hae can carry around a suitcase half her size while running barefoot on gravel and easily disarm scared puppies. She might be outnumbered, but something about Tae-sool partnering with Seo-hae makes me think they would make a formidable team.

For the most part, the main draw of this first episode wasn’t about the episode itself (which was still fun) but the hints to future plots. After I finished watching, I immediately wanted the next one, not necessarily because the cliffhanger was amazing but because I was interested in the world of Sisyphus. I want to know who Seo-hae is and why Tae-sool is so important. Though some of the sequences were a bit cheesy and a bit of the characterizations leaned on tropes, the overall mystery behind this world and the conspiracy lurking in the shadows feel intriguing. While I tend to avoid stories about time travel because they get messy and convoluted, here’s hoping that Sisyphus delivers a fun and tightly-written plot that will have us at the edge of our seats waiting for more.

Seo-hae - "Woman With a Suitcase". Too bad that title is taken.

Tae-sool - opens Pandora's Suitcase?

Lots of future people - honoring kdrama tradition by moving with just one suitcase.

I guess some of us have a benefit of watching Ep.2 as well, but by analyzing only Ep.1, I guess the show is talking about Tae-sool regretting his attitude to his brother, so he invents a time machine so that he can go back in time to write his wrong? That may lead to a lot of people in the future come back in time to enjoy a better life?

Time travel refugees is surely fun to watch, but I also remember in Greek tregedy, Sisyphus is a man being punished by God to go pushing a huge rock to the top of the hill, but that rock would fall back down in the evening, so he has to push again next day. It may hint of time travel as a struggle of Sisyphus.

Do I right or do I wrong? I guess the show must go on so we will know ...

See? That sounds like Alice! Main character invents time traveling because they miss their loved ones.

Then there’s a time loop because of something. He falls in love with someone he shouldn’t?

It's better not to know lmao. But seriously, Alice blew the lid off past Ep 4, and went downhill fast. And that was also pre-produced too :3.

I'll say that this show has more of an oomph factor (budget/effects wise), but w/o the icky mom/son creepy as heck relationship *cringes.

Don't discriminate a pre-produced show. If it is pre-produced, the screenwriter should have more time to think about the storyline and the characters' arc.

I actually think some shows is way better when pre-produced (at least finished writing long before it finished its air. You may not agree with me, but Mr. Sunshine and Hotel del Lunaare two of those), although being popular or not is another question.

2

The above comment doesn't mean bad for you, @soulsearch12, I just want to make a point myself. Sorry if I offended you.

Thank you for the timely recap @lovepark!

I saw ep.2 but I'll try my best to stick on with only ep.1 in this thread.

I admire JSW as an actor -he possesses all the qualities of a super talented actor. Moreover, he chose good projects, and that is why I think this show will not be a let-down. *side-eyes MotA* I also understood more of the story from your recap -so Seon-hae is actually from the future? Ah.. so it means that the leads will never end up together? That sounds plausible since it will make the story more interesting that way.

I think the idea of people from other worlds coming to our world with their own super-customised suitcase very intriguing. Part of me wanted to believe that the suitcase seemed super-tailored for everyone's most precious things/memories in life. It's like your own Life Exhibition.

I'm feeling like the ML's friend Seon-bok is gonna backstab him, together with the psychiatrist.

For now, I'm enjoying the premier very much. Thank you for giving me something I like. I don't think there is any other drama I feel like watching from the most current batch.

Right. I still don't know much about in which direction the show will go. But I'm a bit confused as to why the FL is trying to help the ML: Isn't her father the one who insisted that she must stay away from the ML at all costs?

I read a theory it’s because he knows that since he’s being watched, if she does go talk to him, she’ll then be in trouble. Cuz the whole point for her is to avoid being captured.

Now this theory make some sense.
They’ve clearly talked about this off cam and with them alone. So maybe there’s a code or sort between them?

2

CSW once said, he avoids a work that gives an easy answer and looks fancy on the outside but has no clear message. It got to have something special to attract his attention bc he doesn’t care if it’s a high budgeted project. I also hope it won’t let him down :)

They used 18-22 million dollars for the budget. They also finished filming on Dec 14, so pre-production wise, they had 2 months on top of doing it while filming. So hopefully, they allocated their budget very well. It does show though, I can tell the team put some thought/care into the look/feel of the show. Now, we shall see if the writers taking four years to write this show and having this be pre-produced does to the quality of this series. Let's hope, its in the surprise in a good way camp. I so badly want to this show to succeed/be quality b/c I love Sci-fi, but thus far minus 1 or 2 K-dramas in that realm, majority/all have disappointed me.

3

@sicarius Aha! Please do tell! I'm actually really curious. Wait the plane scene lol? They build a mini set/plane CGI model for the plane sequence. CSW said he got dizzy/motion sickness filming that scene haha.

2

@sicarius I hope you can continue with your radio station sometimes. I think it's pretty funny though there are times when I don't actually understand what you mean.
But I guess it is the one-time radio program.

2

@soulsearch12 Poor VFX artists *sniffs* they always get told to achieve things with no time, and often little budget... *sniffs* Those *coughs* those cracked window models sure were something... and that suitcase editing and rendering... exquisite...

@mmmmm ah well I have news for you. Should you wish to travel back in time, a la Emma I mean Park Shin Hye, there are actually at least 4 or 5 programs from Radio 1 Melonia that have aired previously. They even predate the sh☠️tpost itself ;)

("there are times when I don't actually understand what you mean"- *coughs* do you need a handbook of references? I can oblige... *mianhae* *lots of in jokes probably* *lmao* *also nonsense kekeke* *notactuallymianhae*)

6

@sicarius Ah.. I mean as English is my second language I think I need some time to understand some of your vocabulary lol. I will sure get to that sometime in the near future if I keep reading your comments. Handbook would be a nice idea, but I don't think it's that necessary. :)

1

@mmmmm awww~ okay but like don't hesitate to ask if you DO have any questions??? lmao I totally don't mind.

3

Thanks @sicarius.

Btw, does anyone notice the brand of the ML's car? I'm not sure if it's in the first ep or the second ep, but it seems like the first letter of both words were pulled out: Range Rover without the first two 'R's.

Does it mean that Range Rover isn't a sponsor? lol

Yeah, Range Rover or how I say Ange Over lol isn't a sponsor. Which is confusing cause why couldn't they just ask them to sponsor the show lol? Or pick a company that would sponsor them, unless there's a reason like (quality wise/story wise) that scared off the companies lol? Considering Range Rover is a U.K company and not a Korean one? Hmm...I think choosing a U.K one instead of Korean is allegorical in this show lol?

I’m not sure. But my initial feeling was that perhaps they didn’t reach an agreement in the end so that was why the car appeared in the story (story-wise it’s quite appropriate since it’s an SUV) and got their brand’s name letters pulled out.

LOL. I mean, a lot of people could figure out the brand pretty easily. But I digress, haha. Might as well have put KIA or Hyundai to advertise their SUVs, but I'll take it as a silly motif.

I loved it. The story has potential and the episode was definitely engaging. I do have reservations when it comes to time travel dramas and I hope Sisyphus live up to the expectations. So eager to know more about PSH's character.

I was a bit scared about this drama, because all I had seen seemed random and didn't made much sense, but I was relieved after watching the episode. It was intriguing and never boring. I liked it.
Not much to add, but the Stargate style of the future: a blue shining gate that allows to travel in time and space, and the wonderful surprise of Tae In-ho. I have a soft spot for him, what can I say.

Muahaha. Eorbes! I didn’t catch that at all so thanks for the recap!

The whole first 2 episodes reminded me of Alice. So far it seems like the setup is exactly the same minus the parallel or multi world part, which means that the time traveling will not make sense.

I hope that’s not the case though. Alice was intriguing...if only they’d spent the time explaining things instead of trying to set the couple up.

Some people had problem with her sitting on the roof of the train enjoying the breeze. I took it as a comment that overall she’s way more bad ass than whoever is trying to get her. But I can kinda see the point. They didn’t set it up well enough for us to believe why she is amazingly badass. Maybe more background on where she’s from in the beginning would have helped.

I didn't really understand that moment when she took time sitting on the roof of the train, but when I look back that is the scene that I like the most. I believed she has some kind of super power (as she isn't from this earth) so she could take care of those guys: It is intriguing to think that she even took time to finally breathe and enjoy that little moment in the middle of such grave event. I gave the cast and crew a bonus point for that scene.

And the mentioning of Alice had me shuddered.

My problem with that scene was how incompetent the group of peoole that chase her. Wasn't she at first right there in their plane of sight? And wasn't there a drone inn the beginning as well (or was i just imagining). Why would they not spread out more to cover the ground? A girl with heavy suitcase can outrun them? Gosh, no wonder she can just relax on top of the train.

Seen both eps. But I'll keep my thoughts to EP1. Despite some inconsistencies, ridiculous scenes, shifty science and weak writing, the drama is very entertaining. This is apparently sci-fi but it's 95% fi and 5% sci.

So Han Tae-sul is basically Korean Tony Stark. Heck, even his bodyguard reminds me of Happy Hogan. But for a so-called genius, he doesn't seem to be very smart. But I enjoy JSW's portrayal a lot. Very magnetic.

Seo-hae. I don't know what to make of her just yet. Except she likes to pose on top of trains for photoshoots (was that a shampoo ad?) while armed yet seemingly blind bad guys close in, eat bananas with the peels on, show off her lottery number-guessing skills and flicker on and off like a glitchy hologram.

Being from the future means the past is accessible. And shouldn't that access give you the knowledge of how to eat bananas, how technology works (specifically knowing you're talking to a recorded voice message) and quick wits to navigate certain situations (more on this part in EP2)?

The stills and character descriptions sold me kickass Sarah Connor. Instead, I got fish out of water JJH in LOTBS. I hear it's the same director so that tracks.

There are improvements in the next episode but EP2 comes with its own set of sheer ridiculousness that made me cackle so hard.

Flaws aside, I like the show overall and its leads enough to continue to the sisyphean end.

Lol.

Oh yes! The smartness thing. It’s a hard sell when your character is only conveniently smart half the time. If he’s not as smart as the audience in getting things and yet way smarter than the audience when plot needs him to be, (eg plane crash) then it’s hard to believe him.

I don’t think just because you come from the future you automatically know things. It assumes that the future is the same or better. And they’d already set it up as a end of the world kind of place. So there are plausible reasons why she doesn’t know how to war a banana or how a recording device works.

I don't expect her to know every. single. thing. Just the basics. Like how to eat a banana. Also, if time travel is possible then they are (or should be) technologically advanced. So she should have known it was a recorded voice she was talking to. Maybe I'll cut her some slack if they show us more of that bleak, apocalyptic future in future episodes.

About that banana thing, her father says to her that Han Taesul's world has real fruits unlike theirs, which only has canned ones.
So she probably only knows fruits are eaten like cherries or apples and doesn't know that certain types are to be peeled. Before going to the past, nobody is going to take time to learn about food habits specifically.
And that customer care call. Maybe she is not familiar with those things since she seems to be coming from an apocalyptic sort of world.

My expectation (which seems to be unrealistic) is that in post-apocalyptic settings, the survivors try to preserve and pass on knowledge of the world-that-was to the coming generations.

“Real fruit, not the canned ones,” he said. So they know about real fruits and how they're eaten even if they only have the canned stuff. She didn't get sucked into the past out of nowhere by a magical force. It was a conscious decision. If time travel technology exists, I expect they're advanced enough. And I expect better preparation for that journey. I think it's one of the flaws in the writing and I stand by it. No one needs to agree, of course, but it's still my opinion.

2

Maybe since real fruit is so precious, you have to eat the skin too? muahahahaa

3

@smurfett820 Thank god she was eating bananas instead of durians then

I watched ep1 for one reason only - to see what CSW had deigned to sign up for. As much as I deeply admire CSW and generally his acting performances and drama choices, I thought this was a terrible first episode on all imaginable counts.

Atrocious non-science, bad / over-acting, the story was all over the place (even if show wants to time loop, there are ways to do it well and ways to do it badly). Lots of money seems to have been thrown at it. I guess by Kdrama standards, the CGI was pretty good, although the computers in Tae-sool's home reminded me of run-of-the-mill US procedurals like Hawaii Five-oh, and I was not impressed. To be honest, I was laughing from how utterly ridiculous it all was.

I couldn't bring myself to hit play on ep2. I doubt I'll be able to continue with this show. Maybe I'll just ff to select scenes when I want a laugh.

I wonder why he chose to be in this drama. The only reason I can think of is that he wanted a change since his latest roles have been more serious.
It's only two episodes in, but I have a feeling (hope I'm wrong) that it will get much worse from here on which is a total shame (the writers have supposedly been working on the script for years, how can they mess it up this badly?....)

One of the reasons was he felt sympathy and affection to his character HTS’s unstable sides. His character is smart and confident but is a selfish child with a weak heart. He was attracted to HTS’s wide range of emotions and look. Also another reason he was curious about the building of the two worlds and it’s message relevant to us all.

Solid opening, and I love time travel stories. Though they’re notoriously difficult to do right. This one has some juicy morsels to string us along though. I’m also a big Park Shin-Hye fan so I was checking this one out regardless of quality, but I’m happy to say I really liked the opening episodes. Though I did find the heroics a BIT over the top, they obviously wanted to put an exclamation on our ML’s exploits right out of the gate.

The cast is packed with great actors/actresses so hopefully the writing is strong throughout. Also having already seen the second episode I’m impressed with the action and I can’t wait for the next episodes.

For now, the ML looks interesting and the FL is a mystery... Is she there in flesh or in "hologram"? Or can she become invisible? Because in the night, searching for a heat signature seems more clever than a Geiger counter. In the restaurant, she disapeared for a few seconds. But she likes breathe fresh hair and she can eat...

This show strongly remind me of Travelers. The time traveler refugees from dystopian future with potential multiple groups with conflicting interest.

I feel most kdramas fall short in logic and consistency. I have learn to ignore and forgive but it is hard to do so for scifi. What I've seen so far has not impressed me much but it also has not turned me off. So i think I'll give it another week before deciding tho continue or drop.

For those who have not watch Travelers, i highly recommend it. It's Canadian-American tv series, available in Netflix. Lasted 3 seasons and than got cancelled and i was gutted.

I just finished the first episode and it was great. Glad to see CSW in a non-stoic character. It's nice to see all those range of emotions coming out from him. it's like getting flashbacks of ki dong Chan (God's gift 14 days) and I love it. Hehe

Judging from the 1st ep, this gives me something like Travelers meets Terminator kinda drama. And suitcase-carrying travellers? Umbrella Academy anyone? I'm guessing the suitcases are "time machines". Although it's not yet revealed where these travelers are traveling from. I'm simply assuming they're coming from the future. They could be coming from another dimension/parallel universe (Train?).

The only part that put me off was the phone call during the plane crash. Tae Sul said it was because the plane was crashing that the call went through. Is that even possible? Can someone confirm this?

I haven't seen Dark yet so I can't say. But someone mentioned that the whole “The question is not where, it's when“ they kept saying in EP2 (hope you've watched it and I didn't spoil anything) is cribbed right from Dark. Looks like they took bits and pieces from several sci-fi shows (some of which have been mentioned here) and patched it up into Sisyphus. I know it's unrealistic to expect originality and innovation from dramaland so I'll just hope this will be a good watch overall.

Tbh, at this point. The Alice discussions here have spoiled Dark for me :(( LOL but :(( So at this point, I just hope that I'll forget these details when I do watch the show :D

I always say that its a good thing to take homage or ideas from other great works, and insert your own twist to it. Thus far, bits/pieces of Umbrella Academy, The Matrix, Travelers, 12 Monkeys, Dark, Terminator, Stargate, Adjustment Bureau, and etc have been referenced on here/SNS. So in a way, if the show handles the next 14 episodes well, it could mean we are in for a fun/hopefully intriguing not convoluted ride.

UGH!! I hate that we even have to worry about this, considering this was PRE-PRODUCED!?! Confused lol, but unlike Alice (EW) which was on SBS, hoping that JTBC (Cable) gave it a bit more leeway, so romance and such doesn't get in the way (Ep 2, We'll discuss that more).

It was bit too much. You have genius scientist who is so fabulous that he can save falling plane with help of duct tape. Btw why he has duct tape in his luggage? Do all super geniuses carry duct tape in their luggage?
You have warrior from future who is so amazing that she can sit on top of train enjoying breeze with perfect hair and makeup while being surrounded by enemies. She is from future yet she is fish out of water in a century where people document each and every moment which lives on forever. She should have checked at least couple of mukabang videos if she only wanted to eat good food and fruits.

Despite being able to watch only one episode of FoS (so many dramas, so little time*sigh*) and a long historical drama that I can't even remember the name, CSW charmed me with his acting skills (he is so different from that straight faced prosecutor...his range is 🤯).
I can feel all the flaws in this story, but I thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes, and am looking forward to watch how this story unfolds*fingers crossed*

I think this was one of the worst episode 1s i've ever had the displeasure to watch. The first 25 minutes were excruciating to me, but especially the plane part. The fact that PSH escaped because 2 dozen henchmen are too stupid to LOOK UP made me realise that the bad guys in this are going to be Storm Trooper levels of incompetent.

Then there's the plane scene, where he gets to Tony Stark it up, without going through the trauma and pain that we watched Tony Stark go through so we could like him. The fact that he makes the co-pilot, ie the person with the most knowledge of the cockpit into his personal phone stand and then takes a call from an irate friend standing in a board meeting. And somehow, despite the copilot not being in contact with Air Traffic Control (which is weird considering how close to the city they were) and the accident being 10 min old the news are already up to date and have visuals on the plane and everything.

If a drama wants me to suspend disbelief it has to work for that. There's only so much I can take at face value.

I thought this had incredibly terrible writing. The latter half was more standard Kdrama stuff, but by that point I had already given up.

I forced myself to watch the drama because I love CSW and the latest works in PSH movies. I'm not really a fan of science fiction in series because it is too dense for me. Still I did my best and this surprised me. This is not science fiction, it is fantasy fiction and adventure and I am very happy about that.
It is a very good start, nothing slow and very entertaining, it has huge holes in reality. I called my boyfriend and woke him up since his time zone is different just because I wanted to know how likely it is that the plane will happen. He told me that it is unlikely, very unlikely, but even so he also saw the entire episode and we decided to watch the drama together from a distance. A pleasant surprise.

All these Alice references here give me pause, and flashbacks to something I don't want to remember :O...

Highlights: 1) Big budget (18 million) so that means 1.125 million (I googled lol) for each episode. Hope they don't blow up their whole budget in the premiere week, and have solid action set pieces that move the story forward, but also helps gives this show some wow factor.
2) Mythology is intriguing. And already at 2 episodes, I already have several ?'s about the lore.
3) Actors/roles are solid/developed nicely w/ room to grow/improve.
4) Brother relationship seems like it has the ability to be quite sentimental in the show
5) Show doesn't take itself way too seriously which is nice. I appreciated the humor.
6) Felt cinematic to me, I thought I was watching a film due to the widescreen aspect and nice flow.

Some quibbles:
1) Some of the editing choices moved from 1 scene to the next w/o a direct line of connection. Possible it may be explained later.
2) Music choices have been subpar.
3) Could falter later on by the weight of its complexities, but compared to Alice. We at least have some discussion about the time stuff, instead of us trying to make something out of air.
4) Some scenes were a bit hammy/melodramatic for its own good, but then again, its a Kdrama lol.

One thing, this show is pre-produced and finished in Dec 13 or 14. And the script's been in the works for 4 years, so I hope that we are in for a treat as the show progresses. For me, its way more important that a show starts off a bit shaky and then progresses deeply than the other way around. So far, I'm intrigued to learn more about Sisyphus and how the characters are connected w/ one another. Fingers crossed, PLS!!! I love Sci-fi, and K-dramas haven't been great on that front, but I do admire how they're trying to do something new here!!

So the show took 4 years to write....and some person heard about the plot and decided....hey, maybe instead of sibling getting killed, we can have mother getting killed and son really wants to find out who killed her. That has much more emotional oomph.

And then you have the mother who died showing up later, prompting obsession.

How is this NOT Alice! Okay, it isn't. But the similarities are so there it's hard not to expect the show to not end well.

Yes, 4 years. This was originally on SBS, but they had a legal battle w/ SBS over Sisyphus. The writers won, and JTBC got it in the end. That being said, the supporting cast/ML are solid actors, particularly the ML who is a top class talent. Thus far, after seeing the first 2 episodes, I'm intrigued but confused b/c they haven't touched upon the sci-fi/time travel aspects yet.

Alice went downhill past Ep 4 and beyond, and turned into a melodramatic mother/son quarrels/romantic tension (EW). And they kept slapping on time stuff w/o sticking to one. FLOP. Also Joo Won had to play an emotionless character, but kept crying every episode. Don't think any of the actors (minus the 2nd ML) had a hold on their roles.

We ought to ban the word 'Alice' lmao. But seriously, Alice was also pre-produced too and w/ big names as well. Hmm...As someone said, if this show bombs, Cho Seung Woo is going to get scared of drama land, and take a big break lol. So I do hope it has more up its sleeve, to attract such a high class/top notch actor like him. If Bae Doona or someone fresh and w/o the baggage that PSH has, I think the naysayers would've been better.

hey yes, I think that if someone with less international weight (good and bad) than PSH had taken the role, the situation would be different. It's a shame because the girl is doing very well and in an interview they did together I found it nice when she said how excited and honored she was when she found out that she would work with CSW.
I also tried to erase Alice from my mind, but it was such a disaster that she became a reference.

Yeah sorry PSH, but all the awful fish eyed kiss scenes/same expression has unfortunately influenced my perception of her acting. That even though the 20% we saw of her were good, I'm still like eh.
I much rather see CSW on the screen more haha.

Speaking of, his co-stars were Kim Hye Soo, Lee Bo Young, Bae Doona, Son Ye Jin, Lee Na Young, & Yum Jung Ah who are more closer to his age, and actresses who take risky roles. So it does feel a bit off compared to his previous co-stars. I've yet to be impressed fully by PSH's acting, maybe she'll grow into a formidable actress in her mid to late 30s.

Yeah, their interview together was oddly endearing. She's more outgoing than he is, and I liked their differing energies lol. I would also be honored if I found out my co-star was CSW too haha. It's sweet that she respects/honored to work w/ him.

Alice, YIKES. Awful execution. At least Sisyphus is on JTBC, and has a higher budget so it should at least be a fun blockbuster if done well.

The main issue from the 2 episodes for me was the editing and directing choice. The premise is interesting though and i miss CSW playing an emotional role.
I agree, It's not easy to get CSW in a project because he is super busy. It would put him off from the dramaland if it flops :( I think because it has CSW so the expectation and standard is high therefore many feel disappointed. I just hope it will have decent rating and the story will be concluded nicely. not expecting a masterpiece here :))
Never watch anything with PSH but I heard lot of negative things about her acting. I can tell she put lots of effort here so hopefully it pays off. She seems to have a good rapport with CSW so their chemistry should be fine .

Hey! Thanks for the reply! Aww, I miss Maggie Cheung to pieces, she's very much missed. Aww, come to think of it, so many of my favs are in their 40s now :O. What is time?!

Some of the editing/directing choices were a bit chopping, but I did find myself engaged in this still. I think they should've gotten an action heavy director to direct this who has a grasp on sci-fi. The last work this PD did was Legend of the Blue Sea in 2016. If this was directed by the PD of Vincenzo, maybe the tonal switches could've been more fluid? Or a film director making his debut in tv, since this is JTBC's 10th yr anniversary project too.

"I miss CSW playing an emotional role." Ikr? He's such a dynamic and charismatic actor. His Chungmuro filmography is evident of that. I wish he would come back to film land instead of dramas (minus Stranger haha). Like the guy who did Marathon/Tazza in his mid 20s?! He's the biggest reason why I think many of us are intrigued perhaps, and also to see him in something more expressive again?

I'm shocked though lol, by the press conference. The writer said the role was originally a ML who was born in 1988 and 5"11. So they changed it to fit CSW lol. I think this might under perform ngl :( Sci-fi is just so hard to present well in K-drama land. He jumped straight into this after Stranger S2 ended, and wasn't w/ the main cast who were filming for 2 months by that point. He did get scared off drama land with God's Gift so I heard :O. He read 6 episodes of Sisyphus (when he was considering it), which gave him the push to sign onto this show. Unfortunately, how this'll end is a ? mark/out of his hands.

I'm pleasantly surprised that he chose something genre/a bit lighter so soon, usually he does a drama every 2-3 yrs. Also b/c Stranger is such a tightly plotted show. But yeah, if this 'fails' beyond expectations, he'll prob. won't come back to drama land until Stranger S3 lol.

I feel bad, but the negativity about her acting has seeped into my view of her as an actor. I hear she takes good care of cast/crew. But man, her roles were damsel in distress/Candy/safe. So I'm like eh. Plus, she has the same wide eyed look w/ open faced mouth.

If they gotten Lee Si Young for the role, I would've been jazzed or even Lee Honey haha. Like a fresh face/talent/or an actor whose done strong/messy roles before. I just feel (in my other comment) that CSW+PSH are a random mix/match to me. I don't think her skills match his, and I'm not sure if CSW visually is compatible either w/ PSH. (Esp. if a romance is involved). I think Han Ji Min would've been an out of box choice, and her and CSW fit acting/visual wise. Han Hyo Joo also shown good action skills in her U.S series. Ah. Hopefully, it plays out much better than what I'm envisioning :D

Maggie Cheung, what an actress! She has a beautiful mix of vulnerability, sexy, innocence and badass which is rare to find. I miss her too but I am glad I have found BaeDoona :))
You should join Soompi Sisyphus forum. There are many Stranger's fans there. We actually discuss in details about this drama, what we like, dislike and coming up theories and explanation, making it more fun despite all the stupid flaws.
I am not a fan of this director styles tbh. His last work was 5 years ago and he haven't don't any work since LOBS, why? Certain camera/editing works feel like what they used to do years ago. People are more picky since we are exposed to many high quality drama. they didn't trust us to understand the characters :P Yes we get that she is a badass and he is a genius but no need to overly emphasise things. Hope they listen to the viewer's criticism. It's pre-produced but they still can change some technical aspects of the show (not the story). I don't want another GG14 where CSW made the entire drama. Like CSW said, as long as he tried his best in terms of acting, he has no regret. There is not much one actor could do. Hope this project is worthy of his time. That being said, there are so many mysteries and with CSW acting, I am in until the end.
I try not to comment about PSH as she has many fans, to avoid any hatred toward CSW :)) she is good with more dramatic scenes but kind of lacking in more subtle (minimal gestures with maximum emotion) ones.

Maggie, come back!!! You found a good follow up :)

Thanks! Will check out the forum when I've time! I think perhaps many of us were expecting a more serious drama, but what we got was something more cheesier/campier?! Which isn't a bad thing, I think the next episodes (I haven't watched them yet!) might give us a big of insight? It isn't a K-drama if the show changes tone halfway into something more serious lol! But the teaser of the show (gave off more action packed vibes), so I hope they saved the best for last.

Yeah, same on the PD. They really should've gotten a film director who specialized in action/thriller, esp. since this is JTBC's anniversary project. I thought he did a good job anchoring the random tone shifts, and world building. But I hear most weren't impressed by the fight scene. As I said, I had good thoughts on the episodes overall, but the analytical discussions have sorta made me second guess that lol.

Ah, I see. So it was a bit heavy handed in showing the characters arcs? I feel like its textbook 2.0 in terms of presenting characters. So I didn't mind it. I feel like CSW's character was more interesting than PSH's. Which I heard was the case with Memories was she was playing second fiddle to Hyun Bin's character :/

I heard GG14 was really good until the last 3-4 episodes/ending which oof :O Ngl, I feel like CSW might make this entire drama lol. Like he's the glue that bonds everything together, he said it himself that he doesn't like projects where he stands out, but instead a group effort. That's good to hear, he's doing a musical like next week so dude is staying busy. At the end of the day, hope this somehow becomes a fun/interesting blockbuster drama at the very least. I do think its great that he's doing another fun/emotive role again. Dude is funny/playful in bts/rl, so I hope he can do a comedy next if this plays out!

Haha, yeah. I think its very cute how much she respects CSW a lot. I already seen some comments saying CSW looks old/B rate actor like what?! I can't lol. Anyways, I hope the focus is on the story/mystery of the premise and not on silly stuff (romance ahem). Hopefully, it picks up more in Ep 4 and beyond. Please show, do well, and surprise us!!! Rooting for this b/c its trying to do something new.

I went in not really knowing anything about what this was about beyond the main cast and time travel or something. And after watching episode one, I'm intrigued by the mystery but not emotionally invested in the fate of anyone here. I found the music heavy handed in trying to evoke particularly feelings, especially sad feelings, and it took me right out of those scenes. I sound super negative here, but I'm not feeling negative, but not really super rah rah this is amazing either. I do like a trust no one set up though, so I'll keep watching for now. I just hope it doesn't go the way of Vagabond and become increasingly wtf-ery while trying to look cool.

Also, anyone catch the suitcase brand? Because that is a rugged case that can survive an impact with airliner and falling approximately 7 miles to the ground.

That’s interesting egads. I’ll make sure to try to look at the name of the brand in the coming eps. 🤣

There it is.
I was waiting for the recap of the pilot episode before watching it. Maybe I'll wait until more recaps for now. 😊

first 2 episodes reminded me of alice so much! some evil organization, some sort of time travelling, people from a different time/period coming to modern times lol

A bit late here as I got mixed up with a scene that I thought is in Ep 2 so in summary what I wanted to say is that I want to buy the suitcase hahahah....hitting a plane at high velocity yet is still intact with minor scratches is no small feat man :P
The other thing is that how is it possible that they can still recover the body of Tae-sool's brother? I don't think there is anything left to recover once you're smashed against a plane at high speed + velocity??

Anyway I still enjoy it so far :)

Wasn't rule no. 3 to avoid a certain Han Tae Sool? So why is she blatantly ignoring that and going after him with all her might?

I finally got around to watch episode 1. Was it the greatest premiere ever? No, but I had fun watching it. I am intrigued enough to stick around.

I really just came on here to say that I like Park Shin Hye as an actress. I feel that so many Korean Actresses keep playing the same kinds of roles. Never venturing to far out of that romantic melo bubble. So I really appreciate that Park Shin Hye is doing some different things. (Memories from the Alhambra being an exception, a drama I did not really like and felt she really did nothing in it.) And while I was not exactly blown away by the story, I am glad it is not the same old same old. Thanks for reading.

I just looked up the Director and am very excited to see Jin Hyuk's name. I've seen all of his Drirected dramas from Brilliant Legacy...Doctor Stranger...Master's Sun...City Hunter...Prosecutor Princess and Legend of the Blue Sea. Knowing this I'm confident that this consumate veteran filmmaker will deliver a great ride.
