A curse and a romance await Jo Boa and Kim Ro-woon

If you’ve been hankering for a light, fun watch this summer, JTBC’s new fantasy rom-com Destined With You may be your drama. The latest teaser spotlights our two leads, Jo Boa (Military Prosecutor Doberman) and Kim Ro-woon (Tomorrow), and gives us a peek of their bickering, playful energy. Though not in the teaser, Ha Joon (Missing: The Other Side 2) and Yura (Forecasting Love and Weather) will also be joining the show as supporting leads.

Jo Boa plays Lee Hong-jo, a low-ranking civil servant whose days are filled with complaints — literally — as her job revolves around answering complaints filed with the city. She’s accustomed to being on her own and her life isn’t exactly filled with excitement — until one day she ends up owning a wooden chest. It’s not just any old chest though; by taking ownership of the chest she also becomes the key to breaking a centuries-old curse.

Kim Ro-woon will play the cursed Jang Shin-yu. It’s actually his entire family that’s been afflicted by this curse, and he’s just this generation’s sacrificial lamb. By all appearances he has a wonderful life as an ace attorney who’s always the center of attention, but his family’s curse manifests itself as a strange illness that can’t be cured. When his illness suddenly becomes worse, he seeks out Hong-jo for her help in lifting the curse.

The video starts with Shin-yu kneeling as he solemnly intones, “My pain and the curse are ended. The owner of the wooden box has appeared.” Shin-yu and Hong-jo face each other with Shin-yu clasping his hands over his heart and Hong-jo holding up a piece of paper that burns in her hand. It’s all very dreamy, and Hong-jo cuts in to pish-posh it all: “What are you talking about? I don’t believe in crap like that. At. All.” Shin-yu’s still serious and he asks, “What about curses?”

Curses, she does believe in lol. Shin-yu explains to her that he’s cursed: “Take responsibilty. You turned on the light in my heart. Twinkle, twinkle.” Shin-yu proceeds to pop up all over the place; wherever Hong-jo is, Shin-yu makes it his business to be there while looking exceedingly pleased with himself and taken with Hong-jo.

Hong-jo, on the other hand, is decidedly annoyed by her new, gigantic shadow. Fed up, she asks him, “Seriously, why are you being like this?” The teaser ends with a close-up of Shin-yu giving a little smile, “I’m trying to make a good impression.”

I’m digging this pairing and entire setup! I keep trying to work out how exactly this chest and curse ties in with the romance part of the story. Not trying to insert too much logic into the fantasy yet, I guess I’m just trying to figure out if this is like a genie’s lamp situation. Except instead of a lamp and a genie, you end up with a chest and a Ro-woon (not a bad deal if you ask me).

Directed by PD Nam Ki-hoon (Big Bet, Kiss Sixth Sense) with scripts by Noh Ji-seol (100 Days My Prince), Destined With You will premiere August 23 on JTBC.

Now this is interesting... I'm ambivalent about the leads, but I reaalllllly like the sound of the plot setup. The ingredients sound delicious. Please be somewhere easy to access!!

OK, so @hopefulromantic has given me the courage to ask. I know there are some DB-famous Rowoon anti-fans, and I have no desire to rile them…but am I the only one who’s at all fond of him? It was Tomorrow that did it…and I get that this drama also wasn’t so well-loved, right? I mean I won’t follow him anywhere or anything (cf. today’s Drama Chat), but I’m positively predisposed. I even sort of liked him in Sunbae, by the end?

I take it back. I’m asking “for a friend,” anyone else think well of Rowoon?

I don't think badly of him!! I've literally only seen him in one thing (Extra-ordinary You), where I found him pleasant, but otherwise didn't spark anything more re: today's drama chat about actors. His other dramas before this one haven't appealed to me, so I'm hoping that this one will tip him into my "favorites" list!

Scratch that; I also found him pleasant in Where Stars Land as a SML

I had second lead syndrome for him in Where Stars Land. Ko Eun-sub is still my favorite role of his to date.

The vitriolic dislike for him here baffles me because he is totally harmless and likable as a person.

Oh no no, please don’t think this was a direct response to you. I just hear more “I don’t like him” or (ahem) much more vitriolic dislike than that, so I’m just wondering.

I think I've somehow managed to see all of his dramas and even his appearance in k-variety House on Wheels. Do I think he's an amazingly gifted actor? No. But he's also not bad to the point of being intolerable. He manages to at least project sincerity in his roles if nothing else. Plus he seems...sweet 🤷‍♀️.

I too find him pleasant. He is a middling actor and does well at his roles. The only thing that bothers me is he does this pursing of the lips thing, that an American actor Taye Diggs does and it drives me bananas, but I find him fine most of the time. I will never not watch a drama because he is in it.

He does this lip gesture in like minute 8. I thought of you. :)

Sigh, I'm watching this first in case it disappoints and then joyfully watching Moving.

Of the many idol actors he is someone who I feel has potential and I have seen him improve. I was neutral about him in EY but I liked him quite a bit in ‘sunbae lipstick’ drama. He is pleasant looking and his acting doesn’t irk me.

He's like vanilla ice cream to me. Nice, predictable, sweet enough, and unobjectionable. Sometimes all you want is a pleasant, straightforward flavor that goes down easy.

That's how I would describe Rowoon's performances in the four dramas in which I've seen him do his best to get the job done by being sincere, pretty, and entertaining. He's not Peanut Butter Brownie Swirl with coffee chips gelato or Earl Grey Raspberry Stracciatella. He's vanilla. And that's just fine when what you're in the mood for is . . . vanilla.

I'll watch this drama, btw. As I've said before, it's Jo Boa who gives me pause this time around, not Rowoon.

I have only one reaction to this and it’s sung by Craig David: https://youtu.be/tNEdfhRxHQU. 😁

Thank you for introducing me to this ear worm. Favorite lines:

Met this chick named walnut whip/
Nearly made me sick to the point of throwing up/So I called chocolate chip (that's me!)

It's like the Mad Libs method of songwriting, lol.

🤝 - Jo Boa is making me pause too!

Can I just say Peanut Butter brownie swirl with coffee chips gelato sounds so freaking good, yumm. Idk if that is a made up flavor, but if it isn't, it should exist.

Mmmm…. gelato

Made many port visits to Italy when I was I in the Navy. Perfect on a day full of Neapolitan sunshine.

You're asking so...
That lip pursing thing gives him a smarmy look in my books and it takes me out of the story ASAP. And he had this overly smiley face in Sunbae that didn't understand there's a time for everything and it really pissed me off. And he repeated it in The King's Affection. I didn't watch Tomorrow so I can't say for that.
So it is not that he is a bad actor @attiton . It is not, at least for me.

It's sad you heard only about people who don't like him. Personaly, I really like him since SF9 but as actor since Extroardinary You.

Surprised nobody has mentioned "The King's Affection". That's my favorite Rowoon drama. I first saw him in Extraordinary You and thought he wasn't too bad.

Honestly, the 'dislike' for him is so weird. It's only a few here who are, I guess, 'allergic' to him for some odd reason. So I kinda attribute it to him maybe being an idol actor which is why some people are a bit apprehensive towards him? Another possible reason that I've heard before is over how he looks (possible PS) which is such a superficial reason to dislike someone lol. Personally, I feel like he is one of the many idol actors out there who actually has good potential. He's not afraid to take on varied roles. Most of the roles he took are vastly different from each other so he's not being contained or typecasted into specific character-types like most actors do (aka the typical cold, stoic alpha male lead roles). He does silly characters really well (King of Affection, Tomorrow). People often compares him to Cha Eunwoo for obvious reasons but I think that he's the better actor simply because I feel that he's more versatile and animated on screen.

I like Rowoon.

I first saw him in The King's Affection which I thought he did very well.

In Tomorrow his character was too whiney for my taste, but there were some good episodes from this series and strong acting from other characters.

If Rowoon is in it, I'll watch it.

@hopefulromantic
It will be on Netflix - they included it in their big teaser for upcoming kdramas.

@attiton I don't think he's amazing or anything, but I've liked him in the few things I've seen. He was fine in Extraordinary You, where it really helped that his character was kind of a big blank, and in Sunbae - although I disliked both that drama and a lot of things about the way his character was written. I thought he was pretty decent in Tomorrow, too - some people found him annoying, but I'll give him credit that his character was supposed to be that way.

I'm tempted to send up the batsignal for his biggest anti-fan here because she's always entertaining on the topic, even if she's not always right. 😈

Until now, the teasers looked really fun and light. There will be a more serious sageuk part but I just love bickering between leads!
