First look at Moon in the Day with Kim Young-dae, Pyo Ye-jin

ENA’s new fantasy romance Moon in the Day (previously The Moon that Rises in the Day) has appeared on the horizon, signaling the start of their promo campaign with new stills and the first poster of our fated leads: Kim Young-dae (The Forbidden Marriage) and Pyo Ye-jin (Taxi Driver 2).

Adapted from a popular webtoon by the same title, the story has its roots in tragedy with our Shilla aristocrat Do Ha (Kim Young-dae) dying at the hands of his lover Han Ri-ta (Pyo Ye-jin), who herself came from Daegaya nobility. Heartbroken and angered by her betrayal, Do Ha’s spirit is unable to move on to the afterlife and becomes stuck in the mortal world as time flows on without him.

Fast forward to present day, a good thousand years plus in the future, where we meet the man-child and top star Han Jun-oh (Kim Young-dae). When Jun-oh suffers a serious car accident, the circumstances allow Do Ha’s spirit to take control of Jun-oh’s body, giving him the means to finally seek revenge by targeting Ri-ta’s reincarnation.

Said reincarnation is firefighter Kang Young-hwa (Pyo Ye-jin) who has no memory of her past life as Ri-ta. But by the ironic hand of fate, Young-hwa ends up being the one who saves Jun-oh from the accident and is then coerced recruited to become Jun-oh’s (who is actually Do Ha) bodyguard.

But one revenge plot isn’t enough of course, and talent agency CEO Ohn Joo-wan (Penthouse 3) – who is also Jun-oh’s older brother – created a dangerous enemy for him and his brother by stealing the company from former CEO Jung Woong-in (The Good Bad Mother).

Directed by PD Pyo Min-soo (The Third Charm, The Producers) with scripts penned by Kim Hye-won, ENA’s Moon in the Day is slated to premiere on October 25, following The Kidnapping Day in the Wednesday-Thursday slot.

Pyo Ye-jin is welcome in whichever timeline she shows up, although she'll have her work cut out for her convincing me she passed the physical tests to be a firefighter. Kim Young-dae has "man-child" down pat; here's hoping the past-life possession will give his character a way to branch out.

The molded-plastic armor and the pleather headband with visible modern sewing-machine stitching make me hope that those stills are shots of his actor character in costume for a low-budget sageuk and don't reflect the production values for this show.

The leather pants and headband are from the same piece of cloth right?

Sadly, they can only half-ass it since it's expensive, even a fraction of a sageuk. Lol

I think Pyo Ye-jin could carry this. You’re right about Kim Young-dae getting the man-child part down. But can he carry an epic love story? (See down thread.) Fingers crossed.

I like this PD.

I never watch Pyo Ye-Jin in a romantic role even if she's not new ( I watched VIP but it wasn't romantic and I kinda hated that so many great women fell in love with the most boring guy in the world). So I'm curious. I never really wanted a romance between her character and Lee Je-Hoon in Taxi Driver because it looked more like a brother-sister relationship than a romantic one.

I'm interested in the sageuk part of this drama since QUEEN SEON DEOK was the last Shilla/Gaya sageuk MBC did.
Sounds like the male lead is based loosely on General Kim Isabu. His army conquered Daegaya, expanding Shilla's territory. That'd give his wife a reason to kill him. Lol

I wonder if there's more from the past throughout the drama or just the usual sageuk intro.

@kiara, I am in a quandary about these split timelines sageuk/dramas on whether to include them on my personal listing of upcoming sageuks and period pieces since only a part takes place in a historical setting. It probably doesn’t hurt to carry them.

Another split timelines sageuk/drama in the mix and scheduled to air in 2023 is MBC’s THE STORY OF PARK’s MARRIAGE CONTRACT (Lee Se-young, Bae In-hyuk). The timelines are: 1880s and current. This being a MBC production it should be available on Kocowa/Viki US but that is not a given nowadays.

Looking back I am probably not being consistent because it was one of these split timelines dramas that was my first introduction to anything sageuk-like: SBS’s THE LEGEND OF THE BLUE SEA (2016/17) (Viki US).

@marcusnyc20

This is the same timeline as "Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth." This one is either based on General Isabu or Sadaham (Mishil's lover in QSD). Both were former Pungwolju's of the Hwarang.
I'm tired of Joseon-era split/full sageuks, so this "Moon" drama is more interesting, even if I'm only there for the first episode.

@kiara: It is always good to read your informative and insightful comments. Based on that recent sageuk - the name of which I can’t recall right now - where KYD was thoroughly out-acted by the SL - I am not convinced the sageuk bits in this drama would do him or anyone else any favours. He just lacked gravitas.
And, that cheap gear is depressingly tacky. Who would buy that as even remotely realistic?

@dncingemma: I haven't seen these actors in anything, to be honest. I will check it out primarily for the sageuk portion of it.
ENA and the other small channels don't have sageuk sets or armor to reuse, like MBC and KBS. But I agree with you; It would be great if they put in some effort to make at least the male lead's armor look more realistic.

@sicarius, you little Shilla spy.😂 Are you going to join me?

I can already imagine Kim Young Dae as a man-child top star. Its too similar from his role in Sh**ting Stars. It would be interesting to see him dressed up as a Shilla aristocrat/general.

And then we'll debate at length as to whether Han Jun-oh will get his body back from Do-ha.

Glad we're getting the historical portion in Shilla times rather than the usual Joseon times.

Damn, yet another Do-ha with a tragic backstory involving his ex.

This sounds like a makjang drama more than romcom but I'll give it a chance bc of the leads. I love Youngdae for some reason, he was so charming in Forbidden Marriage.

From what i've read based on those who've read the original webtoon, this is more like tragic melo revenge story rather than romcom ... More like the See you in 19th Life (TV version) instead of the See you in 19th Manga.

I hate everything about how this show sounds and would ordinarily avoid it, EXCEPT that the Past Timeline is set in SILLA, which is my kryptonite, and therefore because I am permanently starved for Three Kingdoms content of any kind, even if it is in a cheap looking faux sageuk soul swapping timey wimey mess, I will, in such a parched state, START this, and pray we get the Silla content first, so I can watch that and then leave this in less hostile hands.
