Live Your Own Life: Episodes 6-7 (Drama Highlights)

We’re finally back to a normal schedule with two episodes this week! Per usual, there’s chaebol shenanigans, family irresponsibility, and mistreatment of the lovely Hyo-shim. She may have unfair debt and an exhausting family to her name, but she at least got the entire family’s share of charm. Even grumbling Tae-ho can’t feign indifference to her for long. He gets all huffy when she finally does what he asked and leaves him to exercise poorly on his own. To prove that he doesn’t need her help, he injures his back after going overboard and needs her help. Of course, she gets blamed for his idiocy, but Tae-ho refuses to switch trainers because he secretly enjoys her company.

However, Hyo-shim has bigger things to worry about than her confusing client. Her little brother’s loan sharks come after her when he flees. While she’s enduring being beaten and threatened in his place, Hyo-do is out gambling away more of his nonexistent money. It’s all too much for the beleaguered Hyo-shim who gets sick, probably from insane levels of stress. She barely has time to drag herself out of bed before she has to take care of her drunk mom. At least Halmeoni is nice to Hyo-shim and acknowledges her struggles. She’s clearly already a Hyo-shim fan (who wouldn’t be?) and has also started bonding with the nice downstairs neighbors. Realizing she’s safer where she is, Halmeoni becomes an official apartment resident and rents out the rooftop room.

Meanwhile, Sook-hyang is at her wit’s end what with her husband cracking under pressure and retreating to his secret shoeshine shop, and finding out Tae-ho kept his dead parents’ totaled car (which he sits next to when he’s sad). Now afraid Tae-ho can use the car as evidence against her for killing his parents, she turns to surveillance. Next thing you know, her minion is ordering Hyo-sung to spy on Tae-ho, dangling a long-awaited promotion as bait. And now all levels of our two families are thoroughly entangled. If both the families are this messy individually, imagine how messy they’ll be if they become in-laws.

Quirkycase, thanks for the highlights.

It turns out that Ruby is a spoiled brat.
I’m all for a dunking booth that you would see at a carnival. Ruby gets a round, her mother gets a round , Hyo-shin’s drunk mom get a round this week. Crazy Chaebol Mom/Aunt gets a round too.

A dunking booth has a big tank filled with water and a bench seat above the tank, connected to a mechanism that has an arm with a target attached to it. People throw baseballs at the target and if it’s a good solid hit, the mechanism dumps the person into the water tank.

2ML is kind of creepily fantasizing about him and FL, beating around the bush with fancy dinners and all. Ahjussi, just tell her , even if it is clumsily done, at least she’ll know. She obviously doesn’t see him as a love interest. She didn’t even mention getting pushed around by loansharks to him. *

He must not have any dating experience (prison didn’t count ) 😓 The expensive dinners aren’t impressing her and his vague compliments are weak. He even had to fish for a compliment about his deal (which came out of left field, as she has no knowledge of wth he was talking about) that move was freaking ridiculously pathetic. 😖

I’m slowly liking Landlady ahjumma more . Youngest bro didn’t know what to think while at the cheobol heiress apartment , she should have offered to make ramen 😛 He’s a scared rabbit.

I hate the ML acting like a middle school boy that “hates” girls. That drama trope is pure trash and make me wish the ToD would take him out.
* As a Chaebol ex con, CEO 2ML should be dispatching a goon squad to beat the loansharks up and have them back off of Hyo-shim. She would appreciate that more than a steak dinner.

It must be a sign of good writing that I actually felt a twinge of sympathy for Hyo-shim’s mom, second brother and Tiger Mom sister-in-law this week as we learned more about their grievances and hardships. But still — they’re the type who take their pain and then inflict it on everyone else, in contrast to Hyo-shim, the designated problem solver of her family. It seems she’s finally reached her breaking point, so I’m looking forward to what comes next. At least she has grandma on her side.

Yes, she was (probably unjustly) fired from work because she got married and had kids... so I had a bit of sympathy for her as well.... but... she is still bitter about that and envies others their rich backgrounds and lashes out and is terrible.

On the other hand, I didn't like how the show was *joking* about the running away, divorce or looking ugly without makeup. That was low...

While she’s enduring being beaten and threatened in his place, Hyo-do is out gambling away more of his nonexistent money.

Last week I was liking Hyo-do for the way he took responsibility of Halmoni. And while I praised him, I couldn't help comparing him to a slobbering Tae-hee and how they are no different, but he's a tad better than she is, from what we know for now. Alas! He did exactly what I feared he would in the italicized this week.

Good one Tae-ho. It was only a matter of time🤣🤣.

Just saying, it's really weird that I'm currently liking Tae-min more than Tae-ho and while I'm not exactly shipping Hyo-shim with him - we all know he's not endgame, Iike those little moments when Hyo-shim's invaluableness dawn's on him, without she having to do anything to show him.

The only character I actually like is Hyo-sim - some others I can understand to a certain degree, but as far as I'm concerned no-one deserves her at this point 😭 I know it's the point of the drama but she really needs a break omg, every week I'm basically rooting for her to drop everything and just run off to just be and breathe. Ngl I also don't like Tae-min or Tae-ho but I'm - surprisingly - leaning towards the former if I had to choose purely because he's nicer and because Tae-ho needs to grow out of the attitude a little bit (which obv. is what I imagine the arc will encompass).

Every time I think I have a hard life, I remind myself that at least I am not the main character of a weekender.

Somehow the only person kind to Hyo Shin is some random grandma, who Hyo Shin knows for a week at best. Tae Min has been whatever this week. I think he has the same dilemma as Sang Soo from Interest of Love, as in he likes Hyo Shin, but he stays aware of her social status and thus, does not make any clear steps to pursue her. Otherwise, I don't see why he could not simply ask her on a date.

But isn't asking someone out to a fancy dinner (even after a no-show the first time) kinda telling someone you like them? Do you expressly need to ask someone out on a date? Why doesn't Hyo-shim consider he might be interested? Well, other than being a kdrama heroine.

I like your Interest of Love comparison. I wonder if TM's stint in prison finally pushed him to pursue the girl he'd liked for a long time silently, but not fully as he weighs his other obligations and expectations.

Believe it or not, I saw this scene while FFwding through the episode for, I dunno, whatever reason.

It seems like it was there as a phone call to set up a certain special someone’s jealousy—and she was sort of distracted by the fact that one of her clients was terribly, tewwibly injured so couldn’t focus on the implications of the ask 😉

I feel like it's still normal for her to just thinking he's a super nice guy and they had a former relationship of being trainer and client.

This will probably be my beginning caveat whenever I comment on this show: I began watching ONLY because of Ha Joon and I am very happy that he finally gets to play the Male Romantic Lead.

Nevertheless, Chaebol Grandmother wasn't the only one to treat HS with kindness - once Tae Min noticed her injury, the white knight in him took over and he took care of her. He was also careful to not handle it publicly to spare her embarrassment. I'm not going to guess at everything going on his head, but he clearly admires and respects her as a woman, he feels comfortable with her (as opposed to the aggressive TV Lady - need to try and remember her name), their time together previously was a saving grace while he was in prison and -unfortunately for him - he has built up a day-dream about her and a possible future. I don't think status is a problem to him (his mother, in fact, was not high status when she married his father). He's made a decision to try the slow approach - and, did I miss something, but I thought their last conversation was about a date. Problem is - he's now assuming too much and not asking.

But for now, he's certainly acting better towards her than Tae Ho. Calling her boss? That wasn't cute - it was manipulative.

Thank goodness I know the adorable Ha Joon will make an appearance at some point.

I didn't really like how he dragged Hyo Shin out of a warm restaurant with the food of such quality that she probably has never eaten, took her to some dumb park (?) and told her he doesn't like that she has bruises. While I understand why he had to do it, I still think he could have handled that better.

The same goes for the date part. For all she knows, this dude, who just came out of prison and was mostly professional-friendly with her before, now wants to spend time with her because he has no friends.

...I write nothing about Tae Ho because their shared screentime is in seconds... At this point, I lowered my standards, and just want him to make an appearance in Hyo Shin's life.

But now there is Hyoshim... and he is attracted to her against his will and feels good in her company against her will and likes pulling her pigtails (against his will? 🙂 no 😉). He is clearly even enjoying his injury! (Btw, I loved the no nonsense doctor who told Taeho off. 🙂)
The relationship between Taeho and Hyoshim is somehow straightforward and equal. Unlike with Taemin... who can be caring and swoony... but totally not on Hyoshim's page (and mind)... and who is always creating this air of inequality... and I'm not sure he would actually let Hyoshim be herself.

If there were a Hyoshim relationship scale with 100 being all-in, Taemin would be at 80 and Taeho at 20 (intrigued but mostly subconsciously). The remaining 20 points for Taemin are blocked by his work, family and sense of class status, and I don’t think he’ll ever get past them. At least not until Taeho gets to 100 first.

Since you've tagged him, first, I'm finally appreciating this as a weekender with multiple plot lines (which was a recommendation of his on how to enjoy weekenders), and second, since you're both experts, is a weekender a step up or down or neutral to an actor?

2

Weekenders are a category of their own and one has to be a bit prepared what to expect, indeed. 🙂 (I honestly also often drop them, I think @oldawyer has better endurance 😄.)
As for if it is a step up or down, some actors do both, but the really top actors wouldn't do a weekender. On the other hand, the shooting is often more relaxed, because of the multiple lines, thus you can see some famous Ommas or Harabojis there. But I'm no expert 😅 other Beanies may know more.

4

@indyfan

I think if a good actor was losing momentum, a good weekender could have helped him/her to get on tracks but it was more when they had ratings around 40%. Now, I don't think it's really helping anymore...

2

A Weekender is not so much a step up or down but for a new actor it is an opportunity to break out (see Sung Hoon and Shin Hye-sun as secondary characters in FIVE CHILDREN- as the Golfer Couple). For someone whose star is fading or diminished it is an opportunity to re-establish an image because by remaining in the audience's eye for half a year: The public literally will not forget you. That sort of need was carried to an extreme in the immediately preceding weekender and effectively destroyed it.

While I do hang in there longer than most, I have dropped weekenders. Or watched with the FF button in frequent use.

5

For actors, weekenders pay less but there are more paychecks and smaller resume gaps. Plus, many networks curate a steady company of actors (mostly supporting and secondary roles).

Top movie actors probably still make more considering they shoot 2-3 months vs. regular series that shoot 4-6 months.

4

As always, it’s not simple. Thank you tho @oldawyer @kurama @welh and Dorotka. Just trying to get a lay of the (drama)land.

I wonder how it also plays out for Uee who has led quite a few dramas vs Ha joon for whom if I recall correctly some Beanies said this is his first lead role.

(And I’m already ffw’ding here and there :)

It's actually rather amusing that the jerk Tae Ho infuriated Hyo Shim so much that she had no problem "being herself" and telling him off, even if he was a precious client. She doesn't want him in her life.

Meanwhile, you are correct - the caring "swoony" Tae min doesn't know the real Hyo Shim - because she has always been restrained and professional with him. Well, next week's preview apparently shows that she gets into some sort of tiff with Tae Min, so perhaps he will start to wake-up from his day-dream.

8

Required fields are marked *

That dream helped him endure prison - and even with a good attitude. He won't wake up soon- which will be infuriating to TV Lady but may also cause her to take a good look at her overly privileged and entitled self. From what little we have seen of her she may actually need to mature more than our maknaes- which is to say a whole bunch.

5
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

I know what I'm hoping for - Hyo Shim tells Tae Min that she can't have an outside relationship with any client (that was like Sirens Blaring in what? the 1st scene of the 1st episode?). If that happens, Tae Min could step back, the gentleman that he is. However, he likely will not because the writers (based on PR releases) are heavily invested in the triangle for now. 😒😒

I don't find TV Lady to be immature - she is born and bred into chaebol life and I would also like to see her gradually evolve into a better companion for Tae Min. I'm still betting that Tae Min will be backed into a corner with her - either forced public dating and/or engagement in order to protect. . . . . waht? his father? the company? TV Lady plays for keeps.

4
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Perhaps immature was a poor way to describe TV Lady- particularly given how little we have seen of her. But she does suffer from having lived a cocooned life- not shut away from the world but, at the same time not having had many of the experiences that others have had. She has probably never had to deal with rejection or competition nor any kind of privation but even more than that- she has probably never really had to deal with the emotions, needs, idiosyncrasies, biases or even just the naturally different world view of another person. What she wants, she gets, and no one says no. That is the sense in which she remains a spoiled child. Yet, she is not lazy nor actually stupid- she is actually very smart and she knows what she wants- and she does play for keeps. Oddly enough- I quite like her even if she is irritating. She is no shrinking violet and I like strong women- which she is. As we get to know her better my opinion may shift but I actually hope that you are right and that she gradually changes into a better companion. From the little that we see what she truly desires is a true marriage and if this story is told well that is what we will get- but remember that she is not the only one who needs to change: Many of the things that I have said about her apply equally to Tae-min. He may indeed ultimately have to marry her to 'save the company' as we have already heard from our Chairman. That means that the two of them will be faced with a challenge of dealing with their situation. TV Lady has already told us that she is not interested in anything like a fake marriage- and she is a tough customer who will not take no for an answer. Tae-min has literally met his match in every possible way. The truth is that they belong together but it will take a long time for Tae-min to understand that. TV Lady already knows this.

4

“ a better companion for Tae Min”. YES! This is precisely what he needs. Perfect wording @kathryn51

0

I can't reply to your comment at 12:12 but totally agree with your comments, especially: From the little that we see what she truly desires is a true marriage and if this story is told well that is what we will get. I like her as well, but perhaps that is a "western" view - in kdrama land, strong chaebol females as romantic partners are pretty rare and all too frequently are a prop for comparison to the designated "sweet - and usually poor - FL".

3

Required fields are marked *

Strong Chaebol females are not entirely unknown: A favorite romcom of mine is MY FAIR LADY (2009) which involves a strong female Chaebol as the FL. There are probably others.

I would also note that the FL in this show has been strong enough to carry her dysfunctional family for years- and is so uncandylike that she is brushing off Tae-min's advances. Even as she is breaking under the strain, she has no desire to be Cinderella. So really it makes sense, if only for the sake of dramatic symmetry, that our 2FL should also be a strong woman even if she is a Chaebol. Which is why I like her, even as I probably will intensely dislike some of the things that she does. In TV Lady is the strength to be ruthless in pursuit of her goals. It is not strength that she needs to learn but rather empathy and a better understanding of others. One can accomplish a great deal by being a human bulldozer, but it is not always the way to go.

Oddly enough I actually do not see the Evil Aunt as a strong person but actually a very weak one- she does evil because she is driven by her fears and insecurities. Much the same can be said for our FL's SIL.

I think it's becoming clearer why TaeMin is all wrong for HyoShim. He has known her for years but he doesn't get her at all.

He should have taken her to dinner at a restaurant like the one they had lunch at, not that fancy place. HyoShim lives in her gym clothing, she was totally underdressed for that dinner. If the idea was to make her feel comfortable in his company, it wasn't a good one.

Taking her to a less crowded place to help her relax was nice, but deciding that by himself and pulling her off her chair when she was not done eating was overbearing.

Touching her face to apply the ointment was too intimate for a trainer-client relationship. HyoShim was visibly uncomfortable with it.

Then he didn't even drop her home despite seeing that she is injured and stressed.

And Sir, what's with telling a trainer that you don't want to train with her but want to have dinners with her instead? The girl told you she is unwell, and you proceed to talk about future dinners and your contract?! She is on sick leave and you shouldn't be calling her at night for a personal chat anyway!

HyoShim is always subdued around TaeMin while she is herself with TaeHo. While TaeHo has behaved like an entitled brat too, he isn't intimidating to her the way TaeMin is. The thing with TaeMin is that he is difficult to read. We know he likes HyoShim, but we don't know if he cares for her.

We are finally back to two episodes per week. That is worth at least a Yippee.

In episode 6 we finally got to see Tae-hee cleaned up- and she is pretty (and sexy). She was at an off-track betting parlor just to see the horse she used to own race. Our other Maknae was there too- and lost his money. Of course, he knows nothing about betting on thoroughbreds so what did he expect? Even those of us who do know realistically expect to usually leave with less money than we came with (but if you are using your head and do your homework not that much less). And our poor FL has just been strong armed into agreeing to pay her maknae’s debt while our ML stupidly hurt his back because he did not listen to her. Meanwhile we got to see our Aspiring Actress (who we all love) at an audition and…..she was terrible as in the worst, most awful acting you have ever seen- it takes real talent to look that bad..

Episode 7- our Grandmother’s best friend, former Executive Director Kang has just died, so she needs to remain in hiding. Our 2FL is busy exercising her ownership of Tae-min (and was pissed off when he forgot to call her after the big meeting- this is not how couples are supposed to act), while he has essentially told our ML to keep his nose out of places where it does not belong (but maybe to protect him? Please note that he did this at Director Kang’s funeral where literally everyone in a position of authority at the company could hear him- and he was loud about it).

Our maknaes are living together- we were treated to cute grocery shopping. OK, a little cuteness doesn’t hurt anything. And it was more than a little ironic to see our FL’s little brother trying to explain the need to save money to Tae-hee. Here I was thinking that it was her job to straighten him out- but maybe we will see a more balanced story of the two of them helping each other mature. That would be much better than the usual trope of smart girl re-making hopeless boy.

Our replacement Chairman is supposed to appear starting with episode 8.

I was not happy when they did not substitute a younger actress for our FL’s mom in the flashback to when the FL's dad left- she absolutely did not look the same 25 years ago- that was simply sloppy especially as the producers did have child actors for Hyo-sim and her siblings. But seeing the fight between her and her daughter-in-law was actually enlightening because it really brings out the stresses in that family.

I was not happy when they did not substitute a younger actress for our FL’s mom in the flashback

That was low budget. 🤨

It is depressing how often lookism rears its ugly head in KDs including in this one. The kid asked the father why did you marry mum and his reply was because she was pretty. The kid then goes ahead and makes disparaging comments about his mother’s looks when she doesn’t wear make-up. Just appalling. These kinds of attitudes are so regressive and clearly still prevalent, at the very least in the minds of the makers of such programs.

And the conversation between the daughter and the mother about why she married dad was questionable as well.

For sure. I know 50 eps gives a lot of scope for altered behaviour and views but words have power. Even if down the line some of these dodgy views might be repudiated, for some viewers at least, the dubious views be confirmations of their biases.

I wondered about the daughter-in-law's logic in complaining about how her husband's family is poor and not helping them financially. Then where is her family? Why did the kids never mention their maternal grandparents?
The actor who is playing Tae-min looks like he is playing the same character from Obstetrics and gynecology doctors, similar facial expressions, similar vagueness and undecidedness.

We are back to two episodes a week, Yayyyyyyyyy!!!!!
Its hard to see Hyo Shim literally getting beaten up for the sins of her brother while he got to spend the time in luxury with Tae Hee. I understand the angst has to build, and slowly, for a 50 episode drama, but this will be hard to take for a prolonged period of time.
Tae Min was sweet in the dinner with Hyo Shim. Later, when he was a b*tch to Tae Ho, not so much.
Dumpster diving grandma is pretty cute, but its cringey when you think how unsanitary it is.
As far as Hyo Shim's mother, if she wasnt living in her past - if she had gotten over the husband who ran away - maybe her childrens' present would've been a lot better.

You are right about Hyo-shim's mom and the impact on her family of her stupidity.

Correct me if I’m wrong as I have fast-forwarded at times, but we’ve never seen the face of Hyo Shim’s father, right? Given the way the flashback teased us by not revealing it, seems like he’ll be making a surprise appearance later … maybe we’ve already seen him and haven’t realized it.

You know, I was wondering the same thing myself. The way they pointedly showed only the back of his head, I was thinking this is someone we might recognize

Father will arrive soon, I believe. The actor is Nam Kyung Eup. The casting announcement was made mid-September. https://tenasia.hankyung.com/tv-drama/article/2023091482274

"Hyo Sim Yi's father was a high school ethics teacher who didn't come back from work when she was 9 years old. As a result of his irresponsible disappearance with his children, Hyo Sim-i becomes the de facto head of the family."

Any bets on amnesia? 🤔

or kidnapped by an evil vampire?

I do get the feeling that the father will show up later. My reason why they do not show his face is because I think, the actor was a placeholder. Its possible they have not secured a veteran actor yet to play the part.

Father will show up soon. The actor is Nam Kyung Eup. If I were a gambler, I would place my bets on Episode 10 cliffhanger.

Tae Min was sweet in the dinner with Hyo Shim. Later, when he was a b*tch to Tae Ho, not so much.

Tae Min views Tae Ho as a competitor for the top spot in the company. TH deserved the set-down from Tae Min after the stunt he pulled at the memorial service - asking questions in front of everyone? You wouldn't do that even in Western culture, let alone Asia.

Well, as TH said in the beginning, he decided he needed to learn business by experience instead of books. Tae Min cares about TH as a brother - but that doesn't mean he must give up his authority/power in the company. As he said, keep personal and business separate.

In fact, Tae Ho in these early episodes is showing himself to be a real "brat" - which is fine, because he will gradually evolve thanks to friendship with Hyo Shim. My mini-"crush" Ha Joon is doing great in this role

Now that you mention it ….😀. TH has indeed been bratty but he’s so cute it’s easy to overlook it. Tae Min is really my favorite so far, but I’ve had SLS in pretty much every drama I’ve watched so I’m working really hard to resist his charms. ☺️😉

Dramas usually show amnesia caused by some violent accident or head trauma .

This of course is ruling out curses, spells, potions or time travel induced memory loss.
Which brings us back to her dad. If he were in an accident there would be some record even if it was as John Doe .
I take it he was not wandering around locally, after the accident, so how did he leave the local area ?
Did he fall on to a boat and sail away ?

Whatever issues our present day selves have about "Secret Garden" - the FL was 🔥 and the drama remains eminently quotable!

It checks all the tropes
- childhood connection
- amnesia
- stuck in a lift
- stuck up ML
- fiesty FL
- sequined designer track suit
- couple sit ups
- cappuccino on upper lip
- magic portion
- cracking open eggs on the head
- staying in spa with those double twisted towels
- villainous M-i-l

And what I wish was a trope - my favorite - actual live concert by "Oska" literally minutes before airing of the drama finale.

I was really mad at Hyo-shim's mother for being less concerned about Hyo-shim being so sick in bed than their neighbor. Kdrama characters usually go to the hospital like they're going grocery shopping. But the one time Hyo-shim is sick (after being beaten by loan sharks, barely getting to eat, and staying out all hours even though she has to show up at work by 5am)...naaaww, she'll get better after some soup?
