Premiere Watch: Moon in the Day

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: ENA
Genre: Fantasy, romance, thriller
Episode count: 14

Reasons to watch: It’s time for another fun fusion fantasy to hit our screens, in what is surely the theme of 2023: lovers that reunite in their subsequent lives, but with varying results. In Moon in the Day, our wronged (read: presumably murdered) hero has been waiting with his Shilla-level anger for 1500 years. When his spirit takes over his current clueless incarnation, he can’t wait to get revenge against the lover who wronged him. Except now she’s sworn to protect him, as bodyguard to his manchild top-star self. I mean, it doesn’t get more hijinksy than that! With Kim Young-dae and Pyo Ye-jin leading the way with space to shine, it should be a good K-drama time.

TL;DR: Another reincarnation love story with a side helping of revenge, humor, and hijinks

It does! I am not expecting a sunshine-and-roses ending from this one. I don't know (and don't want to know) anything about the webtoon's tone or how it ends, but him holding that sword to her back in the poster is pretty ominous.

There's no comedy tag in any description anywhere for this. We have been warned. Any hijinks will be incidental.

Ah! good to know. I think the tone of the first 2 episodes will determine if this is a go or no-go (for me).

it was actually not that dark or heavy for something that was promising to be an angsty melo imo

I've said this before on this site, but it is interesting to me how often this fantasy theme of reincarnation, or past life curses, or traveling back in time has become almost the single way romances or rom-coms are approached in 2023. Its almost as if writers can't imagine a straight-forward contemporary romance that involves more real-life circumstances! Given what this says about the state of love and marriage in Korea and around the world, I think its lucky that I met my wife nearly 60 years ago, when we were children.

The only tropes available in the trope box are
A) Time Slip
B) Curse
C) Reincarnation

Must choose three 😉

A submenu appears
A) Childhood Fated Love Connection
B) Revenge
C) Eternal Love Triangle
D) Crazy Evil 2L usually 2FL

Must choose 3

It has to be some sort of template they are forced to use.

Beanie friends, Two episodes in and The Matchmakers doesn't have any of these tropes...yet. 😅 It also has a hilarious second episode after the middling first.

It does, however, have a sexually-frustrated character played by Rowoon, which is poised to become a new trope in the trope box!

Thank you for the PSA Indy. That too in the thread of another drama. The case of the Roswoonies is spreading far and wide. 😄 ❤

But it fit John's bill, no? 😇 Of course, then Hacja had to add a new requirement! 😤 I want to say more, but in the appropriate drama thread. 😀

@Indyfan oh please say more. Anything you want. I was just teasing you. I won't be a DB thread if there were no off-tangent discussions. 🤣

It's sageuk though, right?

Which is weird because there are a lot of good contemporary romance webcomics that they could adapt, if nothing else

I get completely what you are saying, @hacja. It would also be really interesting to develop this thought further ... how could that «straightforward contemporary romance involving more real-life circumstances» look like... plot line, details, (optimistic) outcome?

Koreans made a lot of contemporary romance dramas until around 2008 (2009, 2010 destroyed this "era"). They showed Korean love stories without fantasy. Even if you watch these dramas nowadays and they may seem "politically incorrect", they are logically and interestingly written. I recently watched the 2003 rom-com "Attic Cat", which was a hit at the time about a couple who live together without being married. It was the first drama of its kind and it had crazy viewership. The characters fit the times, i.e. he was a carefree person who would be hated by female audiences today, and she was the type of character who would be considered a pushover today. Nowadays, such dramas will not have high viewership just because a couple lives together, this is nothing new in dramaland. The scriptwriters have to add fantasy or some betrayals and conflicts reaching the point of life and death to convince viewers to watch. Or at least that's what they think, they have to write such scripts.

"...side helping of revenge, humor, and hijinks"

Kol! I'm game as along as the sides remain exactly that!!
And yes, throughout the drama.

After a happy and fluffy romcom saeguk, this will be a nice addition...since Silla Dynasty don't get touch on very often.

Okay. that twist with her being his bodyguard in the present timeline definitely put her back in his orbit. Pyo YeJin does not strike me as a bodyguard type though. Hopefully this is good since I do not have any midweek dramas aside from TKV.

I'm excited for this one! I've liked Pyo Ye-jin in other smaller roles, I'm looking forward to seeing her as FL.

Ep. 1 was a bit rough at the start, KYD did not seem like the right fit to portray a tough veteran general and all that. But by the end of the second episode, I was invested. Looking forward to the rest of the series, both the leads are acting quite well imo. The comedic moments seem a bit out of the place tho.
