[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Mixing and scarfing bibimbap
by Dramaddictally
Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.
Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.
There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.
And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.
This week’s treasure:
Mixing and scarfing bibimbap
Your mission:
Track down all those metal bowls containing mixed rice goodness and share your food finds with the rest of us. We’re on the lookout for any and all scenes where characters mix and eat bibimbap, even if a contractual, discouraging someone tells them it looks like slop (as in that classic scene from Full House).
Reference drama:
Full House (Episode 7)

Almost all the movies Kim Mi-kyung has starred in.
One particularly rings in my memory instantly.
Go Back Couple. It was a date between Jang Ki-young's character (Jung Nam-gil) and Jang Nara's (Ma Jin-joo).
For context purposes, Jin-joo is Nam-gil's first love, and remained so in the first future where we met our met couple. Man didn't get married. Talk about a billionaire bachelor clocking 40-50. A great catch I must say.
Back to the paragraph, Jin-joo is Nam-gil's first love so, this time, when Jin-joo travels to the past, he invites her for a date under the context of his birthday celebration. They both knew it was a date even though the situation was birthday celebration. So as to cover the ruse that he was the one who made the bibimbap from scratch, he asked the bibimbap lady he bought it from to make it look homemade i.e don't let it appear perfect and neat. Leave some margins of error. Well, Jin-joo caught him cause she could tell this was store bought because of the care that was taken to make it look non-store-bought.
I'm sure I've watched so many bibimbap scenes but I'm not remembering any at the moment.

Coffee Prince—after the reveal blowup, Eun Chan makes a giant bowl at the family dinner and just starts to eat it herself and her mom and sister just let her without a word because they know how much she’s suffering.
Fated to Love You-when the FL lead is newly in the in-laws’ house and she makes bibimbap in the semi-dark kitchen.
The Real has Come—the FL makes one for herself early on and then later for her mean snotty sister-in-law and they bond. (This is before the show went off the rails. Sigh.)
Another Oh Hae Young—I feel like she had a drunken bibimbap meal, but she had so man drunken sad moments it’s a blur.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. Bong Soon makes it for her family and Min Min when he's in hospital, but he doesn't get to eat it and they eat it in front of him. Torture.

My favorite one is in Unlock the Boss! Our ML has to bring FL home unexpectedly and his parents set out a meal for them, but then they all decide to just mix all the banchan into the rice! And FL gets emotional because that’s what she used to do with her mom all the time. It’s such a sweet family moment.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo is given bibimbap at a celebratory party by an opposing attorney she admires. Bibimbap freaks her out and her friend has to tell her she 1. Can’t complain about food! 2. Should just eat the components without mixing them. I never considered what a nightmare bibimbap would be for people with food issues.
Reply 1988: when mom goes out of town! So funny.

I remember there being a bibimbap scene in Age Of Youth 2 (Hello! My Twenties 2) though I don't remember the exact episode number. It happens when the entire crew goes to Eun Jae's house (farm?) to help out her mother and step-father, there Eun Jae's mom and Ye Eun have a moment after Ye Eun only nibbles at her food because of her boyfriend's presence.

In Ep 11, Kim Sam Soon (hey, it’s me - of course this is the drama I’m going to bring up) makes a big issue about starting a diet, forcing her to eat plain tough steak while her Mom and sister scarf bibimbap from a shared bowl. Because 🚫CARBS!🚫
Later in the middle of the night, KSS is back at the kitchen table with the same bowl, mixing up almost everything from the fridge plus more sesame oil and washing it down with a beer. “What is life, after all? I can start the diet again tomorrow!”

My Name is Kim Sam-soon. Kim Sun-ah has it late at night during one of her failed attempts to diet (if i remember correctly). That was the first time I came across bibimbap and it looked so tasty! And the preparing process was quite fascinating with that specific bowl always used.

There was some controversy about a scene in Vincenzo where the leads were eating bibimbap which was allegedly by a Chinese brand. 🤣 Song Joong-ki apologized for the misunderstanding some viewers may have that bibimbap is a Chinese origin dish.
