Park Ji-hoon wrestles himself in KBS’s Fantasy Sonata

The first teaser is out for KBS’s upcoming Fantasy Sonata – along with more stills – introducing us to the conflicting two souls of Park Ji-hoon (Weak Hero Class 1) and his star-crossed romance with leading lady Hong Ye-ji (2037).

The trailer sinks us straight into the dark tragedy, with crown prince Sajo Hyun (Park Ji-hoon) lamenting that, “I allowed you in my heart, for a moment.” The appearing text screen tells us that it was a fated love. But Yeon Wol (Hong Ye-ji) clarifies, “Our fate was that we shouldn’t have met.

For some backstory, Wol descends from royalty as well, but the Yeon clan’s dynasty was put to ruin. And now Wol is faced with a difficult decision when she’s positioned to become Hyun’s concubine. In the following text screens, we read that this is a fantasy sageuk romance that goes beyond stubborn obsession. How quaint.

We then watch as Ak-hee (also Park Ji-hoon) forces his spirit into Hyun’s body, maniacally declaring that, “This body is no longer yours.” But Hyun isn’t willing to submit and the teaser closes on his resolve to fight him off, spitting back that, “I will not lose to the likes of you.”

Rounding out the royal family in supportive roles, in the new stills we get our first look at Ji-woo (The First Responders 2) as the crown princess Geum-hwa and Hwang Hee (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) playing Hyun’s older half-brother, Sajo Yoong.

On the production side, directing is helmed by PD Lee Jung-seob (Dal-li and Gamjatang, Seven Day Queen) with scripts penned by Yoon Kyung-ah (Oh! Samkwang Villa, A Moment at Eighteen). Adapted from a popular webtoon by the same title, KBS’s Fantasy Sonata will be coming to our screens this January airing in the Monday-Tuesday slot.

Ugh.

Not sure if there are more straight up red flags here or concepts that would be catnips to me in the right hands, but are instead also red flags...

I ask for more fantasy sageuks for years and then when Korea properly ventures into them more, and into more completely fictional, non historical and also non "Joseon" ones at that, they all scream "Sic! don't WATCH". I'm doomed. 😂😂😂

Assassins and Fantasy Sageuks SHOULD be my cup of tea, and I do think this writernim has always had a lot of good potential and actually actively tries to better her craft, but ... posession, amnesia, DID, body/soul swapping, and everything else to do with this premise, is a trainwreck just waiting to happen.

The cast is also not encouraging; this already seems like an overly ambitious project let alone with a predominantly green cast. Jihoon was decent in Weak Hero: Class 1, but I don't think this is a wise casting choice for him personally.
Otteoke!

This might be controversial also but the fact that it is yet again a webtoon adaption, is at this point not a plus. There seems to be an overabundance of them and I think I've only ever seen one adaption that I feel is genuinely very good, both the story itself, and the adaption.
(Despite my past foray into webcomics, somehow I have yet to get into Manhwas and webtoons properly, and have really only read 1; coincidentally it wouldn't translate well to screen at all.)

Everything about this screams NO to me, so do let us know if it is worth watching. There seems to be a lot of petulance and high drama in this. hmmm

I can't with these new young leads. They just don't have what it takes to carry a sageuk.

The webtoon has amazing writing, all the various plot elements come together beautifully. The ML probably is one of the most tragic characters in human literature and his love for the FL is heartbreaking. There’s a lot of intricate political intrigues, action sequences and doomed romances that make for a sublime story.

I was hoping we’d get a live action adaptation, this kinda story is made for the screen. However, I’m not sure about this production - the writer, the casting and the budget - at all.

If the webtoon is good then it is more tragic to have this kind of half-baked production which is absolutely not reassuring.

I'm not convinced by this production between the weird story and the casting.

I can't help to see Park Ji Hoon as a boy and not an adult.

I might be open to watching this one.
I think it's fresh that the Royal Family is Sajo and not Yi, so I'm hoping they really embrace the fantasy in that circumvention and write something mentally exciting.

Oh Boy! The cast is green. Too green. But the close shot pictures are asking me to give it a chance. Let this be better than Heavenly Idol, in the green casting I mean, save for Kim Min-kyu.

this actor was a red flag for me in 'at a distance spring is green', and I actually like his eyes a lot. His eyes can portray a huge variations of emotions so I'm seated

The only thing that's catching my eye here are the pictures of Hwang Hee 😉 Everything about this production feels off, particularly the FL who appears to lack the gravitas needed for this role (as described). Not so sure about the ML either, whom I've only seen in Flower Crew.

I saw this actor in weak hero class 1, and he was great in acting. His eyes were crazy good. I saw some edits of flower crew, but he looks so different in this sageuk drama stills. I'm putting my trust in him.

how r8pey of him. who thought this was a good idea?
as much as i love fantasy/fantasy saeguks and body-swapping/time-travelling shenanigans, this is just too much. hard pass!

I am not very familiar with the ML her but he looks so young for the role and does not seem to have the required gravita for the role. I know Yeo Jin Goo has already done double role but I think he would have been apt for the role. He is really good in sageuk roles.

true indeed, yeo jingoo slayed in the crowned clown, and that makes me want to compare this new show to it, but thankfully this actor is also a very promising one (saw him in weak hero class 1 and his acting was outstanding there) so I'll definitely give this a try

OK, I was really excited for this drama because the webtoon has some of the best writing I’ve ever seen, but reading the plot summary on MDL… they seem to have some strange changes and now I don’t know how to feel.

Man oh man. A fantasy sageuk in a pre-Joseon setting with a complicated romance at its core? On the surface, this should be everything I love in dramas, but that cast... I don't think I've seen a drama that feels this miscast in ages. Even though I'm unfamiliar with the source material, the actors don't feel right for their character descriptions in the slightest. @kimjojo21 above reminded me how much more apt a seasoned sageuk actor like Yeo Jin-goo would've been in a role like this (oh god I want that version so bad now) and I now feel robbed and cheated of something that might've been great.
