Beanie level: Errand boy

The reason why Momo and Fupei don’t work together isn’t just because Fupei is too hesitant, non-committal, and avoidant. It’s because Momo often also shies away from expressing what she wants or her feelings when she’s hurt, as her mother observed.

Shanshan, in contrast, is quite like Weiyi in that she’s decisive and takes action. All the signs that Fupei is still hung up on Momo sting her, and it has to be scary. But she still has the courage to be honest, whether it’s voicing what she wants or saying what Fupei needs to hear. That she doesn’t let her feelings control her actions is a sign of great maturity.

As with Weiyi, the way Shanshan carries herself is consistent with other facts we know about her, so props to the writer. I can see how her good grades aren’t by chance, but because she sees what she needs or wants, and isn’t afraid to work hard and smart to get there. #PutYourHeadOnMyShoulder

First up: Weiyi. He’s such a sciencey oddball, he reminds me of my twin brother. I love the spin the show gave on the geeeenius tsundere type with him. He’s actually just a little awkward, but quite kind, and not just to the girl he likes (a trait that some dramas romanticise, especially with tsundere characters, but which I dislike, because it ties kindness to romantic motivation).

More than that, the way he behaves coheres so logically with his nerdy personality. The same observant nature that makes him such a great physics student and potential researcher is also what makes him pick up on non-verbal cues from Momo. And even though his kindness, and curiosity-turning-into-love is what makes him go an extra step to meet her needs, the way he approaches it is quite logical. He sees a problem, sees the solution, then he goes and carries it out. #PutYourHeadOnMyShoulder

I started Put Your Head on My Shoulder yesterday, and suddenly found myself with no new episodes to watch today 😬 Attached is a visual representation of my horror at this realisation.

It’s very ordinary and slice of life, but the characters are so lovely, funny, and worth rooting for that each episode just breezes past. It’s time for me to pause and collect/ share some of my thoughts on why it’s so great.

Your predicament is exactly what I’m afraid of 😰😅😅 That is why I am stalling, by watching 56-episoder “The Legends”, until more episodes of “….Shoulder” comes out and then I think I’m going to binge it… Currently, Maplestage has 16 out of 24 episodes out (the website only does RAW, but I’m Chinese, so I can understand it 😁😁)

Uh oh. I don’t know if it’s a good thing that I now have this info, because I’m Chinese too (Singaporean) and no English subs are not going to stop me from binge watching 🙊

Haha yes, Maplestage is a glorious site for Cdramas, especially if you understand the language and don’t need subs 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
        You’re welcome 😏😏😉😉

I am so grateful that we get a wonderful drama that both leads are equally adorable and their characters feel like real people with quirks!!

One last post for the cutest head boop (°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ㅅ°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ ) Can’t imagine what this show would’ve been without Son Ho-jun and Jang Na-ra!

Aigoooo they were so adorable together!

Have you seen Jang Nara’s award acceptance speech? She was so cute thanking Ho-Jun for making her look like a married woman and JKY for making her look like she is 20! –

It’s cute! And it’s doubly cute that both her co-stars burst out laughing at her comments. Though I felt a little sad when she said she hasn’t improved much in acting–it didn’t feel like she said it just to sound humble. I hope she realises how amazing she was/is and gained a bit more confidence.

      1
      1

Same! She really has improved a lot. Or actually I won’t even say improve because the show that made me a Seo In Guk fan also made me a Jang Nara fan and that was 4 years ago! She was good then and she is good now! She was actually good in School 2013 as well!

        1
        1

Ah yes, I Remember You is on my to-watch (very eventually) list! Now that GBC has made me a Jang Nara fan, I’m definitely bumping that show up the list ^^

Is it possible for one\’s heart to feel full and empty at the same time? Despite its fantastical time-slip setup, Go Back Couple was unrelentingly realistic in its depictions of the resentment that builds up in a marriage because of external pressures from life.

Despite not being very old (late twenties) and having never been married, I\’ve seen a number of cases around me that remind me of Ban-do and Jin-joo\’s relationship, and because of that, I have more fear than faith in marriage. But the show has tempered my fear a little, by presenting empathy and honest communication as important tools to navigate the difficult journey of a lifelong relationship.

There\’s a Korean term, \”인생드라마\”—literally \”life drama\”, meaning the best drama picks in your life. I think of the term slightly differently; Go Back Couple is, in every sense of the term, a life drama—it reflects life itself, and it\’s a drama that will follow and guide me through different phases of life.

Thanks for the ride, show; I\’ll think of you often, with the fondest of hearts and the deepest appreciation ♡

Your feelings about the show match my own and make me miss it so much!

Go Back Couple will always be a show close to my heart… Really gave me a lot to think about! Tbh I am still wary of marriage but it was good to know that problems can be resolved and it’s not all that bad..

    4
    1

If I do come close to being married, I’m sure I will make my boyfriend sit down and watch this with me again so that we can discuss it.

I’m also sure I’ll see the story in a new light if I become a mother. Although the drama championed parenthood and the idea of sacrificing for one’s child, I loved that it had Jin-joo admit to Nam-gil how difficult it was, because it usurped her identity as a person.

      2
      1

That sounds like something I might do as well tbh!

Ah that’s possible… Having a child changes us a lot and it’s not all hunky-dory as it’s show to be in general…

Your definition of 인생드라마 is the same for me and I agree that this drama falls in that category in my opinion. I loved it to bits and enjoyed following your posts as you watched it.

i thoguht moral of the story is that you get rich and life is better..

    didn’t he return rich?

    1
    2

His father became rich not him.

      1
      0

Yup, Midnight is right. His dad became rich but he didn’t–when Ban-do asked why he’s still the same, his dad said “It’s my money not yours”. The main thing that changed for Ban-do and Jin-joo was their understanding of each other, compared to more tangible changes for other characters.

I’m mostly watching the premiere of Her Private Life with mild amusement, but if there are going to be more heartfelt moments like Eun-gi quietly leaving his shoes around so that it won’t be obvious Deok-mi is a woman staying alone, I might just be sold on the show.

Go Back Couple Ep9: This episode was filled with hijinks (Ban-do and Nam-gil’s couple outfit had my mum and I in fits), but the way it used little details to flesh out major themes is amazing.

Ban-do uses his knowledge of Jin-joo’s sleeping habits to gain an edge over Nam-gil to great comic effect. But the scenes of young Ban-do getting peaches for Jin-joo despite his allergy, and of grown-up Jin-joo telling her sister to send anything but peaches, highlighted a touching truth: that some habits are formed through compromising for the ones that you love.

And it’s so wonderful, the way the show does this. It leaves these little messages around, unsaid, there to be noticed only if you look closely enough.

Go Back Couple Ep8: This show has all of my heart. The way this episode strung little vignettes together to highlight the message about parenting reminds me of the Reply series.

Yet the time travel setup makes GBC able to explore something Reply couldn’t. Going back to their college days let Jin-joo and Ban-do redo things they regretted not doing. But perhaps more importantly, it helped them to discover the things they gained with their age and struggles, instead of only looking at what they lost.

I love Go Back Couple‘s twist on the makeover trope.

This isn’t Ban-do falling for Jin-joo all over again. The sadness in his eyes (props to Son Ho-jun’s acting) cues us in that this is him realising how happy and confident Jin-joo can be, and how this spark in her was extinguished as her identity was taken over by the roles of a housewife and mother.

At this point (Ep6), I don’t know how self-aware he is of his impact on her self-confidence. It’s true that deep down, he still cares for her. But where her anger towards him is directed towards his actions (being cheapskate, not playing with Seo-jin in the limited time he spends at home), he directs his frustration by commenting on her appearance, and by demeaning her. He hardly starts a sentence without calling her “this ahjumma”, and years of that have only amplified Jin-joo’s insecurities.

Okay now I miss GBC!!! It was such a beautiful show!

It’s so light-hearted yet thoughtful, which makes for a delightful watch. It touches on very relevant issues regarding marriage–it’s kind of terrifying how I see the people around me in Ban-do and Jin-joo. Yet there’s also this sense of hope that if they can work things out, not all marriages will turn out that way forever (which is a fear that I have).

Very well put. I love GBC. It remains my fave from 2017 and one of my faves of all time~ such a gem~ ☺

Jin-joo’s run-ins with Nam-gil are incredibly cliched, but the delivery from both actors makes it so funny. Also, my mum cracked up when I correctly predicted Jin-joo would fall from the ladder into Nam-gil’s arms. #GoBackCouple

I haven’t seen Jang Na-ra in anything prior to Go Back Couple, and boy, did she break my heart in this “taxi” scene.

Also, I love that this show knows how to be heart-wrenching and funny at the same time, like when Jin-joo honked her nose or when she handed over her credit card and Nam-gil slowly handed it back to her, as if he still couldn’t quite process what was happening.

And, as much as I’m curious about how Jin-joo and Ban-do will find their way back to each other, I can feel the beginnings of SLS like a cold that you know is coming but can’t stop 😣

15

Love the comparison of SLS to a cold that can’t be stopped 😂

I LOVE this show! And didn’t get sls for even one second.

    2

Same here. I supported Bando and Jinjoo from the start. And I like how both 2nd leads were portrayed in GBC. They were matured and stepped back, they did not push and became nasty. All characters in GBC were great including the bad doctor ☺.

      5
      1

That’s nice to hear! About the doctor I mean. Because so far he is one unredeemable jerk.

        0
        1

He stays one unredeemable jerk! 😄
I guess @katakwasabi means that he has a great characterization and ending like everybody else.

Actually I like the actor very much so I mostly enjoyed him rather than hating him 😄

          0
          1

Yes2. That is what I meant @midnight 🤣. He remains unredeemable, his characterization was great. And I’m glad for the lady who was his wife, she had a happy ending too.

            1
            0

As much as Ban-do is immature and lets the weight of his 14-year-marriage dictate how he treats Jin-joo, the little signs that he still cares for her matters to me. So even if I get SLS and feel that objectively, Jin-joo is better off with Nam-gil, I’ll still be rooting for her with Ban-do, as long as that’s what she wants. How compatible a couple is isn’t quite as important as the fact that in spite of the odds, they want to be together. Looking forward to see that journey play out!

      1
      1

Honestly? Jin-joo doesn’t deserve Ban-do. But I totally agree with you on how compatible a couple is isn’t quite as important as the fact that in spite of the odds, they want to be together.

        1
        1

Did you mean Jin-joo doesn’t deserve Nam-gil? I’m only on ep4, so my comment was more of a supposition than a supported opinion. I think I might see what you mean soon, as I watch on!

          0
          2

No, I meant JJ doesn’t deserve BD. And it is a matter of personal opinion. In my opinion BD is a very good and kind hearted man. He deserves the best. But if he loves and wants JJ, then so be it.

            0
            0

@midnight Hmm, it’s true that he endures a lot of hardship and humiliation in the present day as a salesman for the sake of his family. Unfortunately, because Jin-joo doesn’t know about it, she doesn’t realise what lengths he’s going for her.

I made it through ep. 3! Hye-ja’s friends are so cute :’)

And even though Hye-ja’s brother can be really annoying, I have to say he has his (underhanded) methods for restoring some sense of normalcy to her life. #TheLightInYourEyes

Late to the party, but I\’m fully on board the Radiant/ The Light in Your Eyes train! ✨

I\’m only on episode 1, but it already has all of my heart. Scenes like Hye-ja\’s mum (haven\’t seen Lee Jung-eun since I Hear Your Voice) telling Hye-ja what it means to live a good life, or Joon-ha and Hye-ja\’s soju pity party, were delivered in such an ordinary yet compelling way.

Also, I will never not find the flip of the switch + red light behind Hye-ja\’s mum hilarious 😂

Yes! You’ve hit the nail on the head with the words “ordinary yet compelling”. The story the drama tells is one that we’re all familiar with because we’ve seen it in real life, and the simple honesty of it makes it.. richer, and more beautiful.
