Beanie level: Eunuch in drag

“You are yourself, wherever you are. You’re not someone else. If you try your best in your situation, everything will settle back to normal”- Restaurant owner, Life on mars, ep 2

Halfway through Because This is My First Life, I loved Ji-hoo and Se-hee’s relationship of being open to talk about their issues. Being a (very) emotional person about relationships, I like the show’s take on marriage and relationships in general, which is quite refreshing.

Yes, yes, yes. It’s gotten not just commercial but also critical success. It’s not perfectly written, but it’s a very gripping show with such interesting, complex characters.

Won’t complain if they decide to do a Season 2 of Children of Nobody

The actor who portrayed Na Wang Shik in The Last Empress reminded me of Kung Fu Panda 😂

Also, is the old man who saved Na Wang Shik the missing palace guard from Ep 1?

I’ve finally finished Just Between Lovers!

Some comments about the drama:

1. Acting- In this area, I like Lee Jun-ho and Won Jin-ah as leads. They’re so adorable as Moon-So and Gang Doo, respectively. I cried during the scene when MS and her mom fought. I was amazed at Won Jin-ah for delivering that performance.

One thing I don’t like about the drama is the second leads. I just don’t feel Lee Ki-Woo and Kang Ha-Na. I don’t feel their chemistry between each other, neither between Lee Ki-Woo and Wo Jin-ah.

However, I love the interactions between Kang Ha-na and Lee Jun-ho. I initially thought they would be pegged as another love triangle but their friendship is much more interesting than if Kang Ha-na’s character had a crush on Lee Jun-ho’s Gang-Doo. It’s like having an unconventional bestfriend who gives you advice on (dating) life, and both characters understand that they will never have any feelings for each other other than platonic ones. I could understand this as I have such a bestfriend.

I loved the acting of Nam Dae-rum (this kid is going places; he’s amazing in almost all dramas that I’ve seen him in), and the mom of MS. Mom’s acting was so realistic that I am irritated at her.

2. Story-wise, I found it comforting and interesting, though there were slip-ups here and there. Gang Doo and Moon Soo understood each other so well being survivors themselves and at the same time, family members of the victims. I find their transition from (not-so) friends to lovers very natural.

I was amazed and inspired by MS’s understanding and support, especially when GD felt he wasn’t good enough for her and when he mourned Granny’s passing. She gave him space but quietly supported him by being kind to his loved ones. At the same time, GD was very considerate (albeit a noble idiot) of MS as well. He was glad that she didn’t suffer that much, having lost her memories of the accident. I also loved that when MS faltered in their relationship, thinking that she’s not good enough for GD due to his suffering that she caused, it was GD’s turn to be understanding and patient with her.

I also loved the little notes that MS made for the memorial. It’s so touching that these were similar to the words that the loved ones of the victims would say.

It’s also amazing that this drama made me care about the other characters other than the leads ones, and how it’s consistent in its message: be kind to everyone. Each one is suffering. Little bouts of kindness could help a long way. And each person deals with their pain, loss, and suffering in their own ways. Their ways of coping may not be the correct one, but it’s always better to understand and empathize, rather than criticize.

PS. I find it funny that it’s the first time I saw an iphone featured in a Korean drama :))

Lee Ki-Woo is rather… cold… isn’t he? I like him when he is just a friend. But in romantic roles he always seems cold and condescending… Or maybe it is just me.

This is his first drama that I’ve watched, so I can’t compare his performance here with others. Anyway, I do agree with you. To be honest, I fastforwarded his scenes. I felt no emotion from him

I just finished it myself. It will be a favorite of 2019. I loved the different relationships and the romance was well done.
I do think the writer tried to cover to much story, especially at the end.
It was nice to see characters dressed how you’d expect to see them be dressed. And a beat up phone.
Really really liked our two leads. Both the actors and the characters. Be hard to watch them in other roles.

    1. When you’re looking for a child’s body and you have a friend who’s a cop, shouldn’t you ask help from that cop? Also, when you’re suspicious about a possible suspect, you shouldn’t ask them outright if they are that person. Find proof that they did it. Seriously WK. This is why you shouldn’t be a cop.

    2. Dear Ji-heon, a little hug from you to WK would be nice especially since this case hit too close to home. Sincerely, a shipper.

PS. Please go to counselling/therapy, and please encourage WK to do the same (please screen counselors that they’re not manipulative). When you’re done, please adopt Ha-na and be a cute happy little family.

    3. One of the frustrating things about people is even though you have proof that they did it and even if they admitted it, they still won’t apologize for their wrongdoing (hello stepmom)

    1

    4. One of the things I love about this show is WK and JH’s honesty about dark thoughts. I appreciate that she was honest enough to admit that she won’t forgive her mom. However, shouldn’t she feel uneasy that her mom’s within an easy distance of her own daughter? She did it before, with the real little Se-kyung. Won’t she be worried if stepmom might do it again? This is what Red Cry’s worried about. And I know there are other ways to prevent this possibility. It might be worth asking Eun-seo’s dad to take her of her in the meantime.

    5. I love that WK trapped Red Cry and that she tapped JH as well. While Red Cry’s identity was not surprising, the way they caught him was satisfying.

Overall, I thought the ending was neat. All mysteries were solved. It wasn’t rushed but there were too many clues from the beginning, so the ending wasn’t as amazing as I thought it would be.

Grandma: I lived waiting to forget everything hoping things would get better. And do you know what I realized? Such a day won’t come. What you can’t force, just let it be. Don’t try too hard. Being sad and painful, those things are always with us. We have to accept that, what else can we do? But instead, you can meet someone better and live a fun life. You can do that, don’t worry

Having watched halfway of JBL, the beauty of the drama for me is how it articulates human emotions so well. One striking scene for me was when Grandma was in the hospital telling Moon Soo to leave. Moon Soo told her that if she won’t leave, Grandma will feel bad and burdened. But if she did, she will feel sad and disappointed. I always felt that way, I just never learned to articulate it. Furthermore, I appreciate the way the show portrays the struggles of everyday life. Although some were tropes, the main message is clear: everyone is suffering, and it’s always better to show kindness to everyone, regardless of how they initially look.

Perhaps the best thing I love about MS is her sincerity in everything she says and does. And the best thing about GD is his survival instincts and his love for family and friends-turned-family.

In a way, the show reminds me of My Ajusshi in terms of being kind to everyone and understanding one’s pain and struggles. GD actually reminds me of Ji An in a way that they’re both survivors. MS reminds me of DH who seemed to live a simple life, but underneath, they are suffering as well. And both shows have grandmas who show so much wisdom and compassion.

Both dramas are beautiful and so good.

Thanks for bringing up Grandma’s wise words. I needed to hear those today!
I have not seen My Ajusshi because it seems dark and more depressing to me than JBL. Your favourable comparison makes me reconsider it…

The most wonderful about this drama is that it has so many wise words told in the right moment and they don’t just disappear or are wasted. Even if I loved My Ahjusshi, this one digged a special place in my mind and ♥️ and I like to return to it.

I’m enjoying JBL so far. I love the natural progression of Gang Doo and Moon Soo’s friendship. GD’s such a sweetheart. He didn’t want to admit it but he’s a softie. I also loved that MS took the time to get to know GD, even reading the books that he liked! (I teared up in this scene! It’s pretty touching when you let someone into your world and they try the things that you like to do).

Watching Just Between Lovers is similar to the feeling I had when I drank whiskey for the first time. I thought there would be heaviness and bitterness on my first sip. But as I continued drinking, it turned out to be comforting… in a weird way. No wonder people like it.

(Just so everyone knows, I’m not an alcoholic 🤣 I do drink wine occasionally 😅)

Kim Hui-Seong: If were to do something, I will become someone very great.

Oh don’t worry, Hui-Seong, you will be.

His character is my most favorite in Mr. Sunshine. He looks cheerful, but underneath that facade lies pain and sorrow. Among all the main characters in Mr. Sunshine, he deserved to have lived. And I love Byung Yo-Han. He was wonderful in Misaeng, and even more amazing in Mr. Sunshine. I’m looking forward to his future projects!

Still my most favorite bromance: Eugene-Dong-Mae-Hui-Seong ♥️

I thought of watching Just Between Lovers based on good reviews from the beanies. I’ve watched a couple of videos about it, and is it jusr me or does it give the same vibe as The Smile Has Left Your Eyes? 🤔

It may look sad, but it’s not a tragedy and will grow into something that warms and heals. Much suffering but much strength and resilience and closure. So it’s unlike TSHLYE.

Apart from the good ending, there wasn’t air of ‘mystery…?’ that HMS had. No-one is giving any creepy vibes and right from the get-go, you know it’s supposed to be a heartwarming show that breaks you and makes you happy unlike HMS that had you (at least, me) squinting, wondering what MY’s deal was and if he was as diabolical as they tried to make him seem (even though he really was manipulative but yet lovable) and the potential incest… you get it. Maybe it’s the gloom in the background or setting?

I decided to wait for the recap before I post my comments about eps 25-26 of Children of Nobody. All I can say is that I will always ship JH and WK 😍

Children of Nobody Eps 23-24. The post below contain spoilers. Please read at your own risk.

1. Those marks on stepmom’s hands… I don’t think it’s because she bumped into things. I’m feeling like Se-kyung might have hurt. And why do I feel like Se-kyung and Woo-kyung have been abused by stepmom when they were kids? I feel like both of them have unpleasant memories that they both repressed.
2. Did the show explain how Se-kyung got into the accident?
3. I really love that camarederie between Woo-kyung and Ji-heon. 💖 Still shipping them with Ha-na to become a happy family 💖 Tho, before that happens, please do attend counselling sessions. Love, a fan.
4. Are Korean poems really dark? I’m curious.
5. Is it possible to have a happy ending for this show at all?

6
5

    1. (Still have to watch 23-24) Mmm, my theory is that probably SK was the abused one in her parents hands and WK was loved, and when Stepmom came to their lives she took pity on SK and loved her more than WK? I know, hypocrisy. Whatever the case is, SK doesn’t seem to have accepted Stepmom as a mom.
    2. She stormed out of the house after an argument with WK, drove her car away in the rain, and slipped. I think.
    3. In fact, I want WK to be a mom to all the abused kids, lol. Bit na, Ha na, car accident boy’s dongsaeng(what exactly happened to that girl, anyway?)…
    4. Hmmm, I’m sure every ancient culture has their fair share of light, breezy and also dark, disturbing poems. It takes skilz to successfully execute a perfect dark poem tho, so that the reader would be chilled within only a few lines/ or pause for a bit after completing reading it, and go “HOLY CRAP!”
If you look at the Celtic myths and poems/songs inspired by them, they’re pretty dark at times.
You can look up “Changeling Child by Heather Dale lyric video” on you tube. Also “Mordred’s lullaby”.
Now that’s a culture I can’t help but wonder; Are all the Celtic songs dark? What’s the reason for this? Did the almost-constant dark/gloomy/foggy yet eerily beautiful weather of ancient Britain inspire these kinds of dark myth and music?
But Korean? No no. I’ve seen pretty light poems used in other dramas.
    5. Maybe? I *think* there’s a fair chance?
HOWEVER, my problem with the show is, even though the plot and mystery is progressing daily, the characters seem to be stuck in one place with basically no.progressing.at.all. Sergeant Jeon is the biggest example. I love her, but I’m tired of waiting to find out what exactly is her deal! And she’s a main character! And we’re MORE than halfway through the show!!
Still, Red moon, Blue Sun is probably my favourite drama of the year. I’m just sad its non-character-improvement is keeping it from becoming one of the best K-dramas ever made. It totally has the potential, but one step shy. Do you think differently?

    1
    3

Mordred’s Lullaby–how nice to see it mentioned here. 🙂

I do agree with you regarding the character development of our two detectives. Aren’t there only three full-length episodes left? I hope that we can get a little something on the two of them before the show ends.

      1
      0

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Agree with you on Soo-young. We only know that she’s possibly abused when she was young. Other than that, she’s mostly a supporting character, almost at the same level as Chan-wook (their computer guy).

On the other hand, Ji-heon is a bit different. I can sense that from being logical detective, he’s becoming (too) attached and emotional about the cases. I think I can blame his fondness for Woo-kyung here. However, even with that, I still feel that it’s too shallow to be considered as character development.

I guess the show focused too much on the mysteries (there were a lot of cases) that it seemed the characters’ development suffered a lot.

      1
      0

Not only Celtic poems are dark, all the fairytales were really dark and cruel before they were transformed during Romanticism. It’s like The Blue Barbe (La Barbe Bleue by Charles Perrault) which is the story of Henry VIII and was used in SWDBS. Little red hood it’s allegory to sexual abuse and there are more of them more darker when parents eat their children…

      2
      0

Yup. And I feel like Nam Gyuri isn’t given much to work with, in QUITE a contrary to Lee Yi kyung, Kim Sun ah and even N. Pity, because I always found Nam Gyuri a delightful actress to watch.
    @peridot
😁 I’m a big fan of Heather Dale, even though i listen to her songs only like…once a year. Not because they’re bad, but because I always get haunted after listening to them.

Children of Nobody. Ep 11
1. As much as Red Cry kills, I thought it was thoughtful of him (or her) that he even picked up WK’s shoe when he drugged her after she saw Ha-na’s father’s dead body
2. Red Cry must be someone very close to Ha-na. I’m betting it’s either WK’s doctor or Eun-ho. Maybe even the Head Director’s the mastermind. The others are just the ones who implement his murders.

8

Children of Nobody Ep 10.

1. Loved that Ha-na is now being more affectionate towards Ji-heon. Loved that scene where she hugs him, looking so grateful for him.
2. I also loved that Woo-kyung let Ha-na memorize her number and even taught her how to call. It’s way better than JH’s tactic of giving a smartwatch to Ha-na in front of her dad.
3. In another lifetime/alternate universe, I’m really hoping for WK, JH, and Ha-na to be a happy family
4. I’m glad that WK is less of a suspect now. She’s just being in the center of things. So I’m more suspicious of Eun-ho now being Red Cry.
5. What’s up with WK’s psychologist and the Director of the Children Center getting more screen time? 🤔
