Boys Before Flowers: Episode 17

I don’t know if this was by design or by chance (because of the broadcast delay), but this episode had some quieter moments, which have been a rare thing in this series — it’s usually so jam-packed with The Drama. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, though, because for once we had a little breathing room in some scenes, and it was a refreshing change.

Now if we didn’t also have a few mind-bogglingly embarrassing scenes mixed in among those nicely spaced-out ones…

EPISODE 17 RECAP

Revisiting happier times, Ji-hoo watches home videos showing him at age five, playing around with his then-doting grandfather. Ex-President Yoon similarly loses himself in memories of the day Ji-hoo’s parents died.

(Just kiss and make up, you two!)

Jun-pyo faces off with his mother, who wants him to officially accept his engagement with Jae-kyung. She tells him that Shinhwa’s deal with JK Group is a huge deal — is he so thoughtless that he could give up everything his father and grandfather worked so hard for, over a silly thing like love?

Jun-hee storms in and instructs Jun-pyo to leave. Steely, she asks her mother, “Wasn’t it enough to do it to me? You need a hotel, so you sell your daughter. You need investments, and sell your son. What are you going to do if you need something else? You have no children left.”

Madam Kang insists it’s all for her children’s sake, at which Jun-hee scoffs. She’s never felt that anything her mother did was for their benefit. Mom asks her where her current happiness comes from if not her, and Jun-hee laughs bitterly: “Happiness? Do you know what happiness is?”

Jun-hee warns Mom to leave Jun-pyo alone — she won’t sit back this time.

Jan-di is busy at work, filling in for her parents on the janitorial night shift, when Ji-hoo steps into the lobby and sees her. After a moment, Ji-hoo pushes up his sleeves and grabs some supplies to join in. Jan-di is a little abashed but grateful for the help, and together, they clean the windows and the floors.

Afterward, Ji-hoo waits for Jan-di outside the restrooms, but grows concerned when she doesn’t emerge. He tries calling, but though he can hear the ringtone sounding, nobody picks up. Cautiously, he looks inside, and finds Jan-di collapsed on the ground.

Ji-hoo rushes Jan-di home and calls a doctor, who says Jan-di will be fine with some rest; she’s just overworked.

Seeing some blood on Jan-di’s finger, Ji-hoo is reminded of the time Jan-di had wrapped his bleeding finger for him. Ji-hoo takes her hand and presses a kiss to it…

…at just the moment that Jun-pyo drops by. Jun-pyo watches for a moment, then turns and silently leaves. In his car, her thinks back to the confrontation at the Macau airport, when Ji-hoo declared that he won’t step aside this time. There’s an interesting moment, I think, when he laughs and cries at the same time, then erupts into frustration.

Thus when they cross paths at school, he ignores her. (She’s nursing a bloody nose, indicative of overworking — although who else immediately thought of That Other Drama Cliché, the cancer storyline? I doubt that’s the intent, but still, there was a little too much emphasis on Jan-di’s blood to escape that thought.) Jun-pyo walks right by her, and Jan-di, feeling hurt, doesn’t see him turn back to watch her. He kicks the wall in anger.

It must be this frustration, coupled with his mother’s constant browbeating, that forces him into his next decision, which we hear from Jae-kyung that night.

Jae-kyung calls Jan-di out and meets her at the playground, grabbing Jan-di in a hug and fighting tears as she starts to speak. At first, Jan-di worries that something has happened to Jun-pyo, but it turns out that Jae-kyung’s tears are of happiness — Jun-pyo finally came around and suggested they start dating officially.

Jae-kyung was so thrilled she just had to share, and gushes, “Isn’t it so romantic to fall in love with your fiancée?” (I think that’s a little backward, but we get the point.) She also thanks Jan-di: “I’m so happy I have a friend to tell.” Jan-di looks like she would dearly love to not be that friend, but musters up a weak “Congratulations.”

The new couple makes their first official appearance at some kind of Shinhwa event (a cell phone launch party?). F4 is subdued around Jae-kyung, and Jun-pyo himself isn’t too enthusiastic to be here with her; he’s mostly quiet as his friends halfheartedly greet Jae-kyung and trade looks.

Jun-pyo and Jae-kyung greet the proud parents, and Madam Kang expresses her approval of Jae-kyung. Even when her parents suggest that she calm down and act befitting her position, Madam Kang encourages her to continue being her bright, lively self — I’m guessing that she really doesn’t care about the girl’s personality given her lofty connections.

Jun-pyo and Jae-kyung leave the party early to go on their first official date, during which Jun-pyo looks mostly unhappy and disconnected while Jae-kyung tries to engage his attention. I think on some level, Jae-kyung must be aware of Jun-pyo’s feelings, because she’s not completely dumb — she does notice his distraction when they’re at the movies (they’re watching Speed Scandal, by the way).

But she ignores this and keeps the date moving along, whether it’s by shoving popcorn into Jun-pyo’s mouth, dragging him around a teddy bear museum, or goading him into riding the cable car with her. (When he tells her to go alone, she teases him about being afraid of heights, prompting him to come along out of annoyance.)

In the cable car, Jun-pyo spies the message he’d scrawled on the wall the night he got stuck there with Jan-di, and I’m exceedingly disappointed that it wasn’t Jae-kyung who saw the message rather than him. Instead, Jae-kyung enjoys a moment of closeness when the cable car jerks — she misreads the way he automatically puts his arm around her to steady her as a sign of affection.

(At least, I think she’s misreading it, because I don’t think Jun-pyo is actually interested in her. It’s not that he couldn’t be attracted to her — maybe he would have been, if not for Jan-di — but that his feelings for Jan-di tend to be so overwhelming that I just don’t think he’s got room to think about anyone else.)

Ji-hoo comes upon Jan-di studying in their stairwell, and she jokes that at this rate, it would be a miracle for her to make it to medical school. But, she reasons, even if she doesn’t, she could always continue helping out at his grandfather’s clinic.

Belatedly remembering that the estranged grandfather is a touchy subject, Jan-di cuts herself off, then suggests that Ji-hoo make up with him. Ji-hoo answers curtly that they’d never fought — he was abandoned. Jan-di hesitantly mentions that his grandfather feels awful and misses him, but that just elicits a scornful laugh.

Their attention is diverted by two people walking down the hallway just inside — it’s Jae-kyung, nagging and hanging on to Jun-pyo’s arm. Jun-pyo’s growing increasingly irritated at Jae-kyng’s constant clinging, which she defends by saying is because she feels uncertain about their relationship. However, she offers to stop tagging along all the time if he’ll make her feel more secure — then she’ll stay put and wait for him patiently.

Jun-pyo asks what it’ll take for her to do that, and she answers, “Give me a kiss.” Her request makes Jun-pyo think back to all the (romantic, sweet) kisses he’d shared with Jan-di… and then he makes up his mind. He grabs Jae-kyung quickly and kisses her — but in contrast to his kisses with Jan-di, his eyes remain open, cold, unfeeling.

Ji-hoo grabs Jan-di to keep her from seeing (it’s a thoughtful, but mostly useless, gesture) and holds her against him until Jun-pyo breaks the kiss.

It has meant nothing to Jun-pyo and he walks off, thinking he’s earned his freedom. But Jae-kyung, happy now, persists in following him, causing him to grumble, “What now?”

Jae-kyung has a list of things she’s always wanted to do with a boyfriend (99 things, in fact) and suggests they tackle one thing per day. By the time they reach their 100-day mark, they’ll be done with her list and be a “real couple” by then. (Jun-pyo, meanwhile, is exasperated at the prospect of still being with her in 100 days.)

I almost put this screencap up top, because it’s my favorite shot from today, and I think it demonstrates the feel of this episode well — quiet, with space to breathe.

Ji-hoo can see how hurt Jan-di is by the kiss, and continues to follow her as she walks around in a daze (even running into a glass door). As with the mop scene before, Ji-hoo gives Jan-di her space and doesn’t push, but stays in the background until she’s ready to talk. When she finally does, she asks him to take her somewhere.

This ends up being the river.

As they look over the water, Ji-hoo says that Jan-di must have been an otter in a past life — she’s hard-working, cute, and needs water to survive. Jan-di thinks that as long as they’re inventing stories, she could be the Little Mermaid instead, but Ji-hoo vetoes this: It’s too sad to think of her as someone who suffers because of failed love.

Mustering some cheer, Jan-di offers to buy Ji-hoo dinner, so they leave the river and head to a restaurant…

… where they run into Jun-pyo and Jae-kyung. I suppose this run-in makes sense, since this is the restaurant the girls had taken Jae-kyung on their day out.

Oblivious to the tension (whether feigned or real is up for debate), Jae-kyung is happy to see Jan-di and greets them excitedly.

Meanwhile, Ga-eul attends her first day in pottery class, which is taught by a woman named Eun-jae.

I take back what I said about Ga-eul being smart. I’m not saying she’s dumb for taking up pottery because of Yi-jung, and I can understand her actions, but I’m disappointed nonetheless. It’s one thing to harbor a crush for someone you know isn’t good for you (you can’t help your feelings, right?), but another thing to actively cultivate that interest. This is a drama so we know Yi-jung is a decent guy and probably the Perfect Soulmate for Ga-eul… but she doesn’t know that. He hasn’t proven himself to be a good match, and in the absence of that kind of conviction, I’d thought she’d be smarter. Oh well. She’s young and he’s hot.

After class, Eun-jae asks about Ga-eul’s interest in pottery; she answers that someone she knows is a potter. Wanting to share an interest with a friend is a sentiment Eun-jae understands; she explains that that’s how she started, back when she was a child.

Ga-eul asks if Eun-jae’s boyfriend is a potter, and gets the reply that the person in question is a potter, but not her boyfriend. I’m sure we’ve all guessed this much, but Ga-eul starts to get an inkling that Eun-jae refers to Yi-jung when Eun-jae indicates a ceramic mug — she repeats Yi-jung’s words from an earlier episode about how these clay creations are stronger than they appear.

Yi-jung catches his father making out with a younger woman at his studio, and faces him in disgust. Yi-jung asks why his father lives like this, and gets back the response that life is boring. Yi-jung snipes, “Have you ever lived properly even for a moment?”

Dad replies, “There was only one woman who made me want to live right. If you let that woman go, they’re all the same. They’re all just meaningless repetitions.” (Way to be romantic and misogynistic at the same time, dude.)

Yi-jung feels that that’s unfair to his mother, but his father sighs, “That’s why I wish this life would pass quickly. But things don’t work out that way.”

We can see how having a father like this has shaped Yi-jung’s playboy tendencies, but Yi-jung resents hearing that he resembles his father. His father knows Yi-jung hates it (he smiles, “Isn’t that cruel?”), but it’s true.

He leaves him with these pearls of wisdom: “The real thing comes once. That’s another cruel truth.”

Awkward silence prevails at dinner. Jae-kyung notices Jan-di eyeing a notice on the wall, and it piques her interest — it’s a ladies’ challenge. Anyone who finishes a “jumbo ramen” within 20 minutes wins 50 coupons for free ramen. Jae-kyung can tell that Jan-di wants those coupons, so she offers to win them for her. In exchange, she wants a wish from each of them if she succeeds.

Ji-hoo is first to agree, and Jae-kyung dives in.

Everyone watches in a mix of disgust and amazement as Jae-kyung eats, and eats, and eats… and polishes off the gigantic bowl. (More than the stomach space, I fear for her cholesterol and sodium levels.)

She wins the coupons, hands them over to Jan-di as a gift, and claims her wishes: She wants the four of them to go on a trip together. They can stay at one of her family’s resorts. Jun-pyo resists (“I hate double dates”), but Jae-kyung points out that he’d already promised.

After his disturbing confrontation with his father, Yi-jung drowns his sorrows in some hard liquor and loses himself in a childhood memory, when he’d been crying under the table and fearing for his mother’s life. (I’m not sure if she was ill, or perhaps, in keeping with the theme, she had attempted suicide as a result of his father’s infidelity.)

A girl joins Yi-jung under the table — Eun-jae — and comforts him, saying she always knows where to find him. He puts his head in her lap and makes her promise not to leave until he falls asleep.

Feeling lost and alone, Yi-jung now looks at the empty space next to him and imagines that Eun-jae is there, asking brokenly, “Eun-jae, won’t you find me again?”

Still pretending she’s here, Yi-jung lays down as though to put his head in her lap, but in reality just lying down on the empty bench.

Jae-kyung gets her wishes, because the foursome check into her family hotel (I’m so confused — it’s unclear where this is, exactly). Up in their suite, Jae-kyung shows Jan-di a new purchase, thrilling at the couple rings she’s bought for herself and Jun-pyo.

Jan-di is taken aback to see that the rings have been engraved with a “J ♥ J” before realizing it stands for Jae-kyung and Jun-pyo.

Her reaction to the J/J engraving is explained later as she sits by the pool looking at her star-moon necklace, turning it over to reveal the same inscription. But she loses her grasp and drops the necklace into the water. Dismayed, Jan-di decides to retrieve it, and searches until she finds the necklace sitting on the bottom of the pool.

As she swims toward the end of the pool, her faulty shoulder, which has been bothering her all episode, flares up. In pain, she flails around wildly, unable to stay afloat. (AGAIN? I don’t know why a bum shoulder means she can’t use her legs to STAND UP. Excuse me while I pause to go laugh my head off.)

No, really, it’s horrible. I tried really hard to tell myself that the pool was deep, but it was still a hard scene to buy.

And then, things get even cheesier when out of nowhere, Jun-pyo comes swimming out to save Jan-di, pulling her to safety.

Worriedly, he calls out to her and jostles her awake. Jan-di’s first reaction is puzzlement, because Jun-pyo can’t swim. He answers that he learned how, since “I figured I’d rather drown than watch some other guy save you.” Because, as we know, it’s too much to hope for that she ever moves beyond the need for rescue.

Jun-pyo takes Jan-di in his arms and starts to carry her away, which is when the other two come running. Ji-hoo steps in to say he’ll take over from here and help Jan-di back to her room. Reluctantly, Jun-pyo puts Jan-di down and relinquishes her to Ji-hoo’s care, staring intently after her as she walks away. Even Jae-kyung can’t escape noticing his reaction this time. After everyone leaves, she finds Jan-di’s dropped necklace on the ground and reads the inscription curiously.

Yi-jung loiters outside a café and glares through the window at one of the baristas inside. His rage is explained by a flashback, which tells us that this is Yi-jung’s older brother.

The two had had a falling out the day his brother gave up pottery and left home. Apparently they had both studied under their father’s tutelage, but Yi-jung had always been the one with the natural talent, and he’s the one who will take over the family legacy.

Yi-jung had felt betrayed at his brother’s abandonment — he’d escaped but left Yi-jung to shoulder the burden alone. (Yi-jung had never asked to study pottery, although his father had pointed out that he hadn’t protested, either.)

(Oy, the shoutiness and the eye-bugging! Kim Bum, I love you, but you are not in East of Eden anymore.)

Meanwhile, at the undisclosed resort location, Jun-pyo broods alone in the pool, thinking of how he’d had to step back and let Ji-hoo take care of Jan-di. Jae-kyung arrives wearing an uncharacteristically serious and solemn expression, silently removes her robe to reveal a bikini underneath, and joins him in the pool. When he asks what she’s doing, she grabs Jun-pyo suddenly in a back-hug.

At the same time, Jan-di has gotten some medical attention (she’s fine, she just forgot that she shouldn’t swim anymore) and assures Ji-hoo she’s okay. She excuses herself to retrieve something she’d lost, and heads back to find the necklace.

And this is how she comes to see the other couple, embracing in the pool.

COMMENTS

(Did they get a new music director? The Second Moon guy, perhaps?)

Is anyone else feeling tired out by the drama? I don’t mean tired OF the drama, but tired out BY it. I dunno, for mindless entertainment, sometimes it really makes you work at following along.

I didn’t mind the pacing issues (much) because I knew production had to work around Gu Hye-sun’s accident and filming delays. That meant I was generally okay with the episode, except for a few of those truly odd parts that couldn’t be overlooked.

Jae-kyung. I think I have a handle on her character, but as I mentioned, it’s not clear just how much she guesses about Jan-di and Jun-pyo, and how much she’s genuinely ignorant about. I guess it’s up to us to decide for ourselves how manipulative she’s being, but that covers a pretty wide range and I’d rather know for sure if she’s being oblivious, completely manipulative, or halfway in between (I suspect the latter).

Also, what was the point of the ramen scene? I was puzzled as to why Jan-di was so freakin’ passive in this scene — she’s just going to let someone engage in an eating challenge to hand over an awesome prize? When Jae-kyung said she could tell Jan-di wanted those coupons, I wondered, then why doesn’t Jan-di actually WIN them herself? I thought perhaps she’d join the challenge, or maybe they’d both do it, but instead, she just sat back and said nothing, then accepted the prize.

Interestingly, Yi-jung’s father’s view on love is in line with Ga-eul’s philosophy on soulmates, which suggests that Ga-eul is the match for Yi-jung. On the other hand, if Yi-jung has already had a love and lost her, does that mean he’s used up his quota for this lifetime?

Hmm...

well it was an okay episode! (:

I hate how Jandi can be passive sometimes and sometimes really... i dunno. overacting? lol, no other way for me to put it.

and I am also a little tired by the drama. ): Ahh kinda feel like I'm being dragged around.. D: Entertaining enough to keep my attention and it has nice chemistry between Junpyo x Jandi, Ga Eul x Yi Jung and JaeKyung x Junpyo is okay too.. but. eh. ): still find myself preferring the jap overall, though i'm infatuated with Lee Minho (: (for his acting too)

Anyway... GO Jandi + Junpyo! (:
Don't really dig Jandi's character, but.. .I mean... THEY'RE DESTINED! :DDD

I'm gonna be slightly relieved when the pandemonium is over.

Thanks for the great recap as always dramabeans! :D You rock! (:
I always feel relief that some other people are noticing the same things as me when they watch dramas. (: And actually thinking about the drama instead of just mindlessly watching it and accepting it as "good."

Please continue to make great recaps! (:

HUH! This is so much fun, reading Sarah's recap and everyone else's comments. It took me at least an hour to read everyone - and I really READ EVERYONE's comments and it really made me smile to see different views, likes, rants, dissappointments, boredom, indifference ----- so fun!!!

This episode is mellow and at times funny:

Ji Hoo kissing Jan Di's hands - that was looooooooooong
Ji Hoo/Joon Pyo cooking - LMAO what was that all about? ! hahahahaha
Jan Di drowning because of her shoulder - how about floating on your back (but then again there won't be a saving Jan Di scene)

I love Ga-eul and Yi Jung - but will they ever be together? And Yi Jung's expression at the Cafe is not cute :) - those eyes!!! scary movie ??? maybe he'll get an offer to make one - just kidding, I still love the guy.

I MISS WOO BIN ! I just saw him for a bit in this episode.

A few things made me wonder. First, why didn't they just have Jan Di faint? She has been exhausted and is malnourished. It would have made sense! Then the drowning in 3.5 feet of water would have totally worked. Oh well, I am just going to pretend that it did happen that way...

And did anyone else notice how JP did NOT give JD to JH at the pool? I think it signaled that he has had enough of pushing those 2 together. He set her down, and almost seemed to say, for now. But he sure as heck didn't put her into JH arms.

Maybe this is just my wishful thinking :)

Also, I don't think I would like JD if she chased JP right now. He told her he wants to forget her ever knew her. Why exactly should she chase him, since she has no idea how he feels, really? She already sang him a love song. I think the ball is is JP court.

Maybe we are all analyzing and criticizing too much. It is after all a light yet wonderful romantic story. I loved it---it was funny and intense throughout the whole episode. I loved that the story is delving into the past of all F4 and I love that GJP has overcome his fear of water. It is making the characters more than just one dimensional.
RE. Ramen scene--I do not understand why people are so angry about that scene. Jandi is depressed over what is happening with her and GJP--I would not feel like eating all that much when I am depressed. Yet Jandi is probably thinking about her family and especially her younger brother who sometines has gone hungry due to lack of money in the family. To have 50 FREE meal tickets in that restaurant is a good deal for her family who no longer has substantial livelihood--the dry cleaner! Jandi also really likes JaeKyung--she would not try to compete against her. JaeKyung is "very cool" as Jandi said. This is consistent with Jandi's character portrayal--remenber how she felt about JiHoo's initial love interest who is in France now? I loved her acting and explanation in the episode 3 when she and GJP were at a bar in that episode. When Jandi cares about people, she makes sacrifices--in that way, she and Jihoo characters are very similar--they make sacrifices for people they care about. Even though Jihoo yelled at GJP and that he will not back down anymore, Jihoo still cares more about GJP and Jandi more than he cares about his own needs and wants. That is why Jandi is a wonderful character.

Even a light romantic story can have good characterization and some sense. The original HYD is also a shoujo manga but has very deep themes if you analyse it. This show is just about handsome boys and exotic locations

Man Jan Di is killing this drama, I don't mean the actress or her acting but the director and writers, they really have no clue about what Tsukishi's character should be do they? Do your selves a favour and read the manga before obliterating the main heroine, why so passive and sour all the time? Its just annoying now!!!

Btw I loved the new soundtrack and Yi Jung saved this ep, his scenes were great.

I totally agree with some of the fans' comment on JD. This Korean version has turned Jandi to such a wimp. She is so weak and helpless. Someone really tough inside will never behaves like her. I find this character totally annoying and boring. I am losing my patience of watching her now. JD was much likable at the beginning of the drama.

Also, if you know how to swim, you would know how to float without using your hand. I don't think it will be THAT easy for a former professional swimmer to get drown. I could be wrong but I am just not convinced.

i'm sure it's not just me but many of you out there who feels that this korean version is rather similar to the Japanese version right? besides the fact that Koreans love to travel OUT to somewhere to do a shot while the Japanese don't? I'm not sure about the taiwan version cos i've not really seen it. But i'm quite sure the storyline for K-Hana is very similar to J-Hana.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's just that we expected more from this director? (if we forget the flop that Witch Amusement was) This is mainly because the acting in K-Hana is better for the F4s but not so for Makino. (Personally i prefer Makino over Jandi, cos Makino has more guts...) but i like GJP over Doumyouji cos the latter is too childish. I prefer Hanazawa Rui over Jihoo cos he can play an instrument more realistically than YJH and Oguri Shun conveys his emotions better. But of course, YJH can sing better. As for Soujiroh and Akira, Kim Bum and Kim Joon makes a better addition to the team, compared to the ones casted in J-Hana.

It's just that even SYJ's character of first love followed J-Hana's so closely that i'm worried that we may not get SYJ together with Ga-eul. Cos J-Hana didn't bring them together also... Even the interaction btw Jae Kyung and Joon Pyo is 90% similar to J-Hana. Quite disappointing but of course, it doesn't stop us from watching. hee...

But i have to say that i'm truly impressed with LMH for his acting. Really hope to see him act in a drama that shows a different side of him or else, he'll be doomed like Doumyouji, given how we don't see 'Doumyouji-sama' on Japanese dramas anymore these days?

hi, 'beans! long time, no comment! first, thx as always for the recaps. love the sidebars, especially "(Way to be romantic and misogynistic at the same time, dude.)" ;) also, even if that wading pool was deep, a swimmer doesn't know how to f'ing just turn over and float on back? weak, very weak.

but i digress. just wanted to comment on whether the character of jae kyung is oblivious, completely manipulative or somewhere in between. Can't be oblivious because 1) knew JP bought shoes in Macau, 2) saw those shoes at airport scene (but fanwank to assume that she didn't see JD), 3) wondered to JD if he liked someone but then immediately said "who cares, just need to make him mine" and 4) the dude is hot, rich (and supposedly smart), so how can he NOT have girls all over him before, during and after?

Completely manipulative? I'm actually leaning that way, partly because I find her character inconsistent and annoying. The chick is supposed to be independent and world-traveled but becomes a whiny, clingy girly upon liking a guy? c'mon now, she has a frigging pet lion! and what happened to her taming JP? she feels uneasy? hm, i wonder why? maybe because she knows that his heart somewhere else but still, she figures the odds are stacked in her favor? i'm curious to see how PD resolves her bit.

@#191 Cindy:

It isn't just about the bucket-loads of cash...

I don't think Madam Kang has any issue with JanDi's character necessarily; in fact I think she has a level of admiration for JanDi's unbreakable spirit (which, I know, we aren't seeing much of these days....).

But knowing how people would pounce on the chance (or have tried) to woo her son and leech their fortune, Madam Kang is protective of her son, her company, and the citizens of Korea whose lives depend on the success of Shinhwa. (I know, I know..I'm making her sound ridiculously magnanimous but just trying to delineate her position)
She's a sharp business woman--so if she can have both a spunky daughter-in-law her son might be into and a joint venture that would further grow her company...why not?

I know this is reaching...but rather than helping one less-fortunate girl like JanDi, wouldn't the marriage of her son to JK be helpful to thousands more less-fortunate? Not that I'm saying she's benevolent but Madam Kang might use such logic (manipulative as it may sound).

I like your comment. Just want to add more to this. Madam Kang doesn't care a bit about employees. She knows that Jp does. To her the lower level employees are replaceable, easily fired and not worth any respect. She uses the card of the employees future to manipulate and guilt JP. She only cares about being at the top.
Also, even if she is concerned about the company's growth, business deals can be made even without marriage clause. MK wants JK because she fits the image of Shinwa well and doesn't care one bit even if her son goes on to have a horrible married life as long as she gets her resort city/merger

I look forward to your recaps. It gives me a chance to laugh at the strange
parts of the series I really love.

I love Jae Kyung maybe because she is so straightforward and she genuinely likes Jandi. I agree the conicidences are giving me a headache

It's a pretty "tame" episode and what bothered me aside from the passive
Jandi was where the Song Woo Bin aka Prince Song went off to? He's gone again?! I so look forward to see him and his cute calming air.

I hate the writers.

Well because of this, it's possible that some BOF people are religiously lurking on yer blog and might be taking down notes on your rants and raves and might also be enjoying the dramabean-drinking-game. Which reminds me, didn't their music director had to defend himself *something*...and now lookie am i hearing "change change change"? then again your what ifs and your fans' what ifs may ...who knows...may give them one hellava idea that would make the story better.

This episode is a breather indeed! no intense drama, intense stupidity, intense cheesiness--just ... chill!

I'm not a die hard fan of HYD that's why i'm not that dissapointed to how things are going with the story*per se* or how much tweaked they did in order for this said version to be dif'rent from the other versions. I watch it as another Korean drama, although I may say that this isn't the best out there but i'm enjoying it, still enjoying watching it for if not i wont waste my time watching it.

I have a question: Kim Bum and Kim So Eun share surnames. Isn't it like korean taboo to have anything romatically-linked going on (even if it's just acting) between the two?
I don't know. I read somewhere about this involving two different actor and actress in the same situation... blah blah blah... So, I just wanted to know.
Also, wat do you call a younger sister /younger brother in korean????

This is the first time I'm making a comment. But I thought I would put in some of my insight as well.

First, to comment on why Ga-eul would take the pottery class when he hasn't done anything to show her he is her soulmate. But at the same time, from the previous episodes, you can tell already that Ga-eul has fell for Yi-jung. She sees a deeper side from him than others from the surface. Maybe she even thinks he is the one because she said that when you find the one, you should never let him/her go, or else you would regret it forever. So maybe Ga-eul is trying all she can to see if Yi-jung is the one for her because if he is, she won't regret it in the future.

And to just shorten everything, this drama i utterly confusing at times but as i agree with most people, it is just so addicting. There's something about it that even if the storyline does not flow, it is illogical, my heart is still pounding and anticipating for the next episode. So therefore, good job to the korean version.

@Peeps, i don't think it is taboo, My Girl had Lee Da Hae & Lee Dong Wook & Lee Junki, Family Outing had Lee Hyori & Lee Chun Hee. i'm sure there are more but those are the most recent i could think of.

javabeans, i though the ramen scene was important cause JK won the coupons for JD, & JH promised the 3 would grant JK's wish, so JD had to go on the double date so all that other junk would happen (JK trying to seduce JP, JD misunderstanding). too bad GHS couldn't eat in that scene cause she would have loved it.

Peeps!@218, lol, too funny! :)
"Kim" (and "Lee") in Korea is kinda like "Smith" in US/UK and given smaller population, Koreans will quickly have a hard time dating/marrying if there was a blanket prohibition merely based on the same surname! Think that you're referring to Koreans going beyond second cousins in bloodline when determining if a relationship is taboo or not. Think that it may go as far back as fifth or sixth. That's why people always tend to ask about your family's origins, meaning from which region, which village/clan, etc.

And "dong-seng" is younger sibling in Korean, regardless of sex.

There was some really awkward and unnecessary scenes. But the one I find most awkward and unnecessary was when the two boys started cooking.... and they didn't even end up eating it. Now I'm just wondering how many of the fan girls and boys out there jumped ships from Junpyo/ Jandi or Jihoo/Jandi to Junpyo/Jihoo. Wahahah.

Anyhow, thanks Javabeans! Let's go eat ramyun together!

"First, to comment on why Ga-eul would take the pottery class when he hasn’t done anything to show her he is her soulmate."

ARE YOU SURE YOU REALLY WATCH THE DRAMA OR ONLY THE BOYS IN HERE? Did you forget they dated ? What can you tell about caledonian episodes when Ga Eul and Yi Jung was flirting (although we know after two timer -Ga Eul has a boyfriend)

calm down lily,

i used to like your comments because they used to be reasonable and you used to provide proof/evidence to support your opinions.

But now i'm starting to get sick of it. Your skill on criticism seems to have deteriorated for you've been unreasonably bashing this drama all you can.

And concerning YiJung and GaEul--don't make claims that you know everything because you don't. You cannot call GaEul the two-timer because she hasn't even met her boyfriend yet('til way after the New Caledonia eps.) and she was not flirting with YiJung during those episodes in Caledonia.

And as an addition to that, javabeans is correct. It was only a fake date.

So please, its about time you quit making harsh assumptions without even knowing what you are saying.

*I do respect your opinions, but please be more polite in stating(or supporting) them.

am i seeing a trend?

Jandi
1. Jihoo
2. Junpyo

Jihoo
1. Seohyun
2. Jandi

Junpyo
1. Jandi
2. Jaekyung

Yijung
1. Eunjae
2. Gaeul

Gaeul
1. twotimer boyfriend
2. Yijung

Going with the theory that the first one teaches you how to love, and the second one is the one who reaps the fruits of it...
i personally think jandi should end up with jihoo, junpyo with jaekyung and yijung with gaeul! i know jandi and junpyo are supposed to get together in the storyline, but if they do, what's going to happen to jihoo and jaekyung who are awesome characters in their own right? (and no i cannot imagine jihoo developing feelings for jaekyung, that would just make his character too fickle)
also, why is junpyo still in love with jandi? could someone tell me why they fell in love in the first place? it seems to me that they glossed over it in the beginning...any particular turning point from tormenting her?

i think the characters are beginning to lose energy...it's a pity because this show has so much potential! aside from that, thank you for the summary javabeans!

wpajax--loved your comment/analysis.

they did sort of gloss over why JP fell for JD. I think simply put, she was a challenge for him and thus his feelings just grew from their antagonistic interactions.

The reason why i'm enjoyed this episode is because it's never stop to show how much now Jandi loves Junpyo, what i was really missing in the first part of the drama, i was feeling like, Jandi that don't really want this relation, this was so frustrating and tiring

Now i feel sorry for JK cause she will go through big hardships now she has figured Jandi was in love with Junpyo, she seems to have lost a friend and her man at once.

I must be the only one who don't like Jihoo charactere, at first he was the prince-like who came to rescue Jandi, but i don't like the way he tries to get Jandi waiting for Junpyo wrong moves, his feelings aren't very clear also. He is much more a looser type right now for me. I prefer so much Junpyo who shows his feelings straightaway.

I think Jandi can't be struggling for her feelings for Junpyo anymore even if Jihoo confess his love for her cause right now they are to strong she can't even hide the way she feels.

Yes, I agree with you - I actually try to watch an episode of "1 night 2 days" right after watching the dramatic BOF/BBF to get some =D back haha.

And has anyone else noticed the choppy editing? I found that it was really obvious in this episode =\.

As much as I like the Jun Pyo - Jan Di pairing, I'm starting to appreciate the things Ji Hoo does for Jan Di..

and what about Woo Bin? He definitely needs a lot more air time!

##230 wpajax

Totally agree with you about the theory on the first one teaches you how to love, and the second one is the one who reaps the fruits of it….

Btw, yes. Jihoo is sweet, always there with Jandi by her side even in her most depressing moments and cared for her. But to think of it, though his thoughtfulness and feelings towards Jandi, she is obviously moved(guitar moment in Macau, giving her shoes at the airport, wiping the window in ep 17) but to her, no one can ever replace Junpyo, who touches her heart despite in the initial state, she was trying hard to get.

Her feelings for Junpyo are real and the fact that they went through so many obstacles and still stick with each other(Junpyo nursed her in ep 5, Junpyo saved Jandi in ep 10, Junpyo rescued her in the snow in ep 12). This shows how special and meaningful they treat each other and that Jandi loves everything about Junpyo(her Junpyo buscuits during Valentine's Day, Junpyo lunch when they decided to go on picnic but cancelled in ep 11 and even during Junpyo's birthday, she made a cat doll with curly hair).. very sweet!!

So I really can't wait to see the fun parts like before between those two. Excited to see them back again, the bickerings, sweet moments and all... Also, can't wait 4 Junpyo's sis to help them against the witch.. Well.. Jaekyung, she's nice and cool, but too bad, Junpyo is not into her though she have some similar character as Jandi, well, no one can replace Jandi in Junpyo's heart right?? So... Jaekyung lost her first love but hey...at least it taught her something..

About Jihoo.. In my point of view, he's a nice guy but at times, in life, you cant get a person or something though you put so much effort in it.

Haha.. Though it's just a drama, it sure's addictive and definitely touches our hearts. So to all the actors/actresses/director/producers and all... thumbs up!! good drama, good story line, convincing acting, nice places... so yea... congrats to Lee Min Ho and Kim Hyun Joong for receiving the award. U guys deserve it!!

Hope to see more kdramas as exciting as BOF!!

Sorry but i can't help but comment on something...err someone..

yeah, for someone who mocks BOF week after week after week after week! i'm really and truly in awe of how much she was able to track down every episode. *contradiction-alert!*

Seriously, i'm like one of those who really looks forward in watching this drama *despite its flaws and missed and rant-worthy-scenes*, coz i know that it is what it is already and i content myself to what is being served to me *as per javabeans--just chill!*, yet ask me what episode this and that scene happened and i can't answer you. I'd definitely remember some scenes but to actually remember what episode it was shown; like i say "wow" for that person who really remembers everything even though she keeps on saying that every episode sussh-ass and aint-worth-watching!

@230 me likey how you see things that way! that's the reason i kinna had in mindewhen imade this AMV:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyuMoUmmdgY
*xept for yijung with gaeul*..let see how things would end, 'faith is still high for this drama....not! *lol*

yeah where's woo bin again...i badly wanna see that dude!!!!

seriously, in terms of planned marriages jae kyung isn't a bad choice, she's cute, fun and not stuck up. so i think jun pyo was lucky..
i actually like her a lot more than jan di, as i've talked about many times before. i dont know why she's being so passive in these episodes. jan di's FIERCENESS is suppose to be one of her lovely traits which jun pyo fell in love with...
i kinda dont like how she's just sitting around waiting..i guess she can't do anything really but still it's just another point for the anti-jandi team..

tehehe i love how jae kyung is so cute when the media came , and kept tugging on jun pyo's arm to smile for the cameras..puppy love sigh..seriously as a parent, i'd want my boy to be with jae kyung..(lol..)

hey javabeans! what's that movie that GJP and jaekyung was watching during their "first date"?

okay and im not attacking "true love" and "first love" but seriously if this played out in real life, jun pyo would have stayed with jae-kyung, it's more realistic of a choice and she's not that bad

tht teddy bear museum seems to be well used in kdramas? i wanna go too...

ALSO im sick of jandi and her hard knock life....
seriously, the bad luck can only keep on going for so long..

plus point for jan di, her make up's better now..

AHHH i dont know why i dont like jan di so much =_= i'll work on it i guess

also i thought you were kind of hard on ga eul and that she took up pottery to be closer to yi jung.
people do this everyday for someone they like and want to be with, try the type of food or find something they'd both might enjoy and have fun with so
i dont think ga eul is being "less smart" because she wants to be closer to the person she likes..

sorry for spamming
okay for the part where jae kyung is winning the ramen tickets, i think she wants to show jandi her friendship, since all of them are rich (except for jandi) presents like that show how much they mean to them, and not just presents that are bought with money..

and jan di didnt say a single word at the ramen place....

jandi shouldnt scrunch her face, makes her look even older =_=

yah and i agree, more lines for woo bin! a side story would be nice too..

another comment bout ga eul and yi jung, in both the tw and jp version, things didnt work out for them at the end...i hope HOPE WANT IT SO BAD that it works out . i dont even care if jun pyo and jan di get together lol...

okay i think i've just come to the conclusion that i dont like the actress playing jan di, everything about her makes me mad so i'll stop looking for reasons
and why do they always dress jan di in these weird/awkward/ kind of cute clothes? like that red cape thingy...

they should either dress her cute/nice and pretend she's not poor when it comes to clothes or very plain clothes

these awkward clothes are making me mad..
i really care about what the characters wear so! yeah so far most of the characters look really good, except for jan di...

still hands down for best dressed cast was coffee prince, it didnt hurt that everyone was so good looking too TEEHEE

@ Javabean and his follower
Javabean I respect your work a lot but I have to tell you chill down too.
I replied to post 219 who said "First, to comment on why Ga-eul would take the pottery class when he hasn’t done anything to show her he is her soulmate"
And I don't agree with this statement AT ALL! Maybe Yi Jung did not say he is interested in Ga Eul but please he did not stop to show the contrary (I mean the made up thing and he is always stuck with her) ! And you stated "Perhaps you’re the one who forgot that the date was faked, and that Yi-jung repeatedly reminded Ga-eul that they were only acting".
Acting ??? Who do they want to fool ? Maybe they have their reason but
Frankly, a "fake" date with Ga Eul...What for ? To remind to viewers "don't forget Yi Joong is supposed to be playboy" ? Or maybe he is in her ?

Ga Eul maybe not a two timer but her "boyfriend" storyline was all mess! Before in Caledonian episodes they flirted (don't tell me the contrary Yi Jung "playboy" was hardly with another woman apart Ga Eul. Same with her). Then suddendly she had a "boyfriend" came from lalaland (for a ruined double date scene) and after they broke seems she didn't feel too much pain but when Yi Jung told Ga Eul he "acts" with her the girl is saddened (and Yi Jung-Ga Eul fans either)...Sorry but in this case I can't understand Ga Eul character and Yi Jung either.
And at 229 Who are You ? Kim Bum ?

lily, I have no problem with you (or anyone else) disagreeing with me. There's a lot of disagreement about this drama and I think that makes for lively discussion. I do, however, have a problem with the tone of some of your posts, which outright attack other posters and border on flaming, calling people stupid or assuming everyone's a fangirl purely because it's obvious you prefer HYD and you think everyone who likes BBF is an idiot. I'm not here to cultivate a flamewar atmosphere.

REPOST: incase you werent able to read this

“AND PLEASE PEOPLE STOP WITH THAT!! ” <—HUH?

This isn’t your blog to begin with. Even Javabeans doesn’t tell you to STOP writing, commenting, ranting. WHY? because you have your own piece to say and i believe Javabean is the kind of person tolerant enough and empathic enough not to delete all your comments or even ban you in her site and she just lets you bash around and BOSS around, you shouldnt abuse this freedom!… by the way do you even know the word RESPECT? *gulps*

Im just wondering, Why don't you make your own blog and rant all you want. Invite people who will listen to you, who’ll side on you, who will say “YES I AGREE WITH YOU LILY! “BOF sucks and i can’t agree with you more”… I think it gives you so much joy when people say things you want to hear/read, so go ahead create your own world and be happy!.*incase you don’t know, THEY SAY IT FOR THEIR SAKE AND NOT TO SATISFY YOU BTW*

Because here in, this blog, you don’t have the right to force Javabean’s visitors to STOP raving over the things they enjoy…we enjoy… I LOVE BBF IMMENSELY and I super loath HANADAN…but i never ever, tell people that they should not watch Hanadan or that it’s so theatrical, and so and so... because I respect other people’s preference. get my point?

---
For you to actually tell Javabeans to chill out--shame on you! She's been the most tolerant person in this blogsite/forum, despite your teenage rants. But this time it's different, what you did is unacceptable already, attacking other people, quoting their comments just because you didn't agree with them? How pathetic is that? Besides Dramas are viewed subjectively, as per one's preference, if they like it they like it if not they don't PERIOD. what's the sense of attacking other people just because they like what you don't like. You're not even a professional critic...professional critic attack the drama not the PEOPLE who acknowledge it!

I know for someone who's as closed minded as you, whatever i'm saying wont affect you but then again wake up kid the world doesn't move solely around you...and FYI the world doesn't need disrespectful person like you who doesn't know how to value someone else's opinion.

@ Javabean, if you felt attacked sorry . I started to talk about BOF's fangirls when these ones (people I don't know) started to attack me personnally Because I was telling this drama is BAD. Plus If you read previous postes someone stated how poorly done this drama is and another people attacked him/her with the usual thing "If you don't like it what are you doing here ?"...
@ Shut up you tell me you LOVE "immensly BOF". Good for your feelings. But if you read my posts I stated my amazement about the way people (like you) said this drama is "good" (despite all the elements Javabean him/herself posts in his/her reviews). Nowadays I don't even compare BOF to HYD japan anymore since officially for me this drama (BOF) is with MG the worst HYD live action version. Now I tend to compare it to other korean dramas (since like people say BOF is a koreanised version in his own. Alright.). However qualitywise it's not a new thing. I even find it mediocre compared to other korean dramas (especially on the soundtrack part, actingwise and the way the scenes are put together).
Yet I somewhat understand why people watch it (the Yoko Kamio's HYD effect). I said BOF is to HYD what Golimar is to thriller of Michael Jackson. Both are addicting in their ways. But tell me, have I ever told to anyone "don't watch BOF. You don't have to watch it..." ?
Plus "shut up" Javabean is not a child or a defensless person who needs people like you. You don't scare me with your "aggressivness" thing. Who are you ?? LMAO.

@ Cmt #115 & 128....YES! No more 'Almost Paradise.' However, did anyone feel the song was kind of upbeat (at the end) especially when you discover that the one you love is being embraced by another woman?

@ Cmt 92...I'm on the same page. I seriously think everyone gets the message that the actress could not get into the scene due to the accident. I do agree w/ you that the intention was for JK to initiate the couples going to the resort. I am just truly sad that these potentially good scenes are ruined by 1) bad music choice; 2) Choppy/down-played/non-sensical/PLAIN crappy scenes; 3) Accidents {in real-life for the actors/actresses...not their fault} causing scenes to lose the effect/intention of the scene.

JK's friendliness has been hammered now, as sincere and genuine. The Ramen scene could have easily shown that 2 women, aiming for the same guy, with no ill-intentions for each other, could compete on a different level - food. Even though the outcome would be the same, JK winning...it still would've been nice to see the playing field even. To some point b/c the scene did not make sense, I couldn't imagine not having it. I rather have it than not have it. I don't think I can bare any more delays and/or sloppy/last minute specials for the cast to recooperate.

{Refraining from comparing to HYD} There are some elements in the K-drama that makes it different: more storyline to all characters (except Woo-bin). I do see how some of the acting can be referred back to the Hallyu Wave (i.e. Nose bleed = Cancer...LOL) NOTE: If you are malnourished, you happen to be iron deficient which, in turn, will cause a nose bleed.

@ JavaBeans - I heart ur re-caps! Keep up the good work.

***I did see the EP 19 preview and there's one minor piece in this episode worth mentioning. The puzzle piece bracelet/necklace (not sure which) that Yi-Jung holds in his possession will be a trigger when Gaeul has it in her possession.

@Java, I promise this would be the end of this I was just questioned and I need to say my piece, for the last time.

@lily
I certainly rolled on the floor laughing when you asked me whether or not I know what diplomacy means. well i most definitely do hun, but, DO YOU? coz I can't believe, for someone who has been hushed, warned, begged a number of times for being so insensitive could actually ask me whether i know what diplomacy means. LoL. A big word coming right out of someone who doen't even practice it is such a big irony!

Secondly, you're missing the big picture here lily, i didn't tell you "the world doesn't need YOU", what i said was, "the world doesn’t need DISRESPECTFUL person like you who doesn’t know how to value someone else’s opinion." it's 2 different things, unless you intentionally omitted the word disrespectful coz you are, once again insinuating something. Coz the latter, i said it for you to understand that, that side of you aint funny anymore, that your being so disrespectful is unacceptable, that if only you'll reflect on this and stop being so insensitive then maybe, just maybe you are LILY the person; not LILY the DISRESPECTFUL person that the world doesn't need.

Im not saying that Im better than anyone else here. I definitely know where I stand! Just that i do respect and appreciate those people who know how to respect other people; those who dont attack other people just because they dont like what they like on the other hand people who disrespect other people really disgust me!

what is wrong w/being a fangirl?
fandom is one of the most significant areas of research in cultural/cinema/TV/newmedia studies.
henry jenkins even remarks that fandom is the most sophisticated/complex/advanced way of practicing global-pop-consumerism.

well... anywhere we go, we always see some crazy dogs barking at anything/anybody (because they are crazy). it's certainly no use to yell @them to stop.
only thing we could do is just ignore it and let it barks! sooner or later, it'll stop when it gets tired...
even so, i still feel very sorry to see one crazy dog muddies the nice, warm, clean water for a cup of delicious java coffee.

thanks javabeans for all your hard works.
