You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 27-28 [Open Thread]

After a lot of long hard deliberation, I decided to drop recaps for You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin after all. I’ve explained the reasons in previous recaps so I won’t belabor the point here; the short answer is that I’ve decided that this show isn’t the best use of my recapping time.

On the other hand, I do still like it and find little gems sprinkled throughout the episodes—not nearly enough, but they’re there. And I know you all probably would like to continue to have a place to talk about the show, even if we can’t provide full detailed recaps, so I’m opening up Sunday nights to Soon-shin Open Threads.

If I’ve got the time I’ll weigh in with some thoughts—I can’t promise weecaps or anything formal, but we’ll play this by ear. It’ll give me a chance to experiment with format as well.

The gist:

The parentage issue is out in the open, with not only Soon-shin finding out the truth but also the press. Mi-ryung ignores everybody’s entreaties, as is her wont, and leaks info to the media about Soon-shin’s identity. Soon-shin is furious and repeatedly tells her off, but Mi-ryung has the most virulent case of selective hearing I’ve ever seen in a drama, and does everything her way. She does it all with this absurdly wide-eyed look of innocence, too, which is the most shameless thing, I swear. She decides she’s going to take Soon-shin in and live with her and be the Best Mom Ever. I wonder if someone could tell her that she already earned the title Worst Mom Ever, so the most she could shoot for at this point is Mediocre At Best.

So now the press knows Soon-shin’s identity, which adds to everyone’s stress, except Mi-ryung’s because she laps it up with a grin, incredibly pleased with herself. I actually feel sorry for Yeon-ah, who finds herself totally shunted off to the side in Mi-ryung’s excitement to welcome her new toy daughter. But then I remember Yeon-ah was so smirky when Mi-ryung dumped Soon-shin the first time and figure she’s getting her karmic bite in the ass.

The reporters hound the mother-daughter duo for an interview, which Soon-shin is roped into doing. She makes Mi-ryung promise she’ll pull the interview from broadcast, but Mi-ryung tells them to go ahead and air it. When it does air, Soon-shin’s family is blindsided and hurt.

Highlights:

Young-hoon takes a proactive step in showing romantic interest in Soon-shin, beating Jun-ho to the punch. I can’t feel too bad for Jun-ho ’cause he’s the one dragging his feet and tripping over his words. And sometimes tripping over his feet and dragging his words.

Young-hoon asks Soon-shin out on a date (using the word “date”), then asks her to call him oppa or Young-hoon-sshi (instead of Manager). He takes her to a musical featuring Jun-ho’s talent, so Jun-ho is there and spends the whole show staring over at Soon-shin, upset because he tried to ask her to the show. But she ignored his call so he never got to ask.

Then he horns in on their coffee date afterward, literally squeezing past Young-hoon to claim his chair. Petty, petty. But I do like how he presses her to admit that she was envious of the actors onstage, and that she still wishes she could try acting. She denies it and Young-hoon tells him to lay off, telling her encouragingly that she ought to do what she wants. It’s what makes Young-hoon so cuddly and sweet in the moment, but ultimately wrong for her—he’s thinking of her temporary comfort and not her long-term regret. Jun-ho, on the other hand, is trying to get her to be honest with herself because that’s the only way she’ll be happy in the long run.

Bread Man is hilariously terrible at English, and yields to Bread Boy’s suggestion to motivate himself with the threat of forehead flicks. Only Bread Boy takes WAY too much enjoyment in doling them out, and Bread Man gets pissy. Then he asks Hye-shin for some help, and beams when she agrees.

Sadly, those are about the only highlights I have for this week, and they’re both in Episode 28 and occupy about five minutes in total. This good-to-tedious ratio is killin’ me.

Oh, on the upside, at one point Mom does utter these words to Chicken Ajumma: “How can you say that? Are you even my friend?”

Lowlights:

SO MANY lowlights.

Grandma is sickeningly sweet to Soon-shin, and openly says it’s because she’s blood family now.

Yoo-shin is really hard to take, and advocates “giving Soon-shin back” to her birth mom. Also, she carries on like Dad’s betrayal and Soon-shin’s existence is an affront to HER. Why is this all about her? Ugh.

She’s not terrible deep-down, and I do get why she’s so angry. It’s just, I shouldn’t have to dig so deep for rationalizations and explanations as to why she’s not a horrible person. I should maybe be able to see that from the way she lives her life. And yet here she is, screaming, “Send her away!” Poor Soon-shin, having chosen her adoptive family only to have them yelling at her to leave.

Yi-jung, bleh, starts wooing Chan-woo’s mother in her hopes of eventually winning him over with her deluded persistence. Chicken Ajumma assumes this is Chan-woo’s secret girlfriend and LOVES it. She tells Yoo-shin, who HATES it. Chan-woo asks her to take their relationship public with the parents so they can marry, and she yells at him and storms off angrily. Sigh.

Mi-ryung tries to buy off Mom, offering her a big envelope of money as “thanks” for raising her daughter.

Too much Chicken People and Mom and reporters and gossipy extras.

Too little Jun-ho.

Too little Young-hoon.

Too little cute.

Thank you JB and GF for all your effort and your time. I agree with dewaanifordrama, that this is a great idea. I struggled with staying motivated to watch the show (the way I would watch, avidly and fully being engaged), because, imho some plot points seem to be soooo slow and I didn't feel sucked in, which was partly what I was hoping.
Maybe my expectations were to high, since this IS a weekend family drama. I should relax and enjoy the ride (or in this case, the show). I will try to do that.

Thank you for creating a place to discuss the show and ask questions and read from others and share our thoughts. I appreciate that very much!

" I struggled with staying motivated to watch the show (the way I would watch, avidly and fully being engaged), because, imho some plot points seem to be soooo slow and I didn’t feel sucked in, which was partly what I was hoping." <-- I am with you here!

There is just not enough cute to carry the angst for me to feel like I must see the next episode (been following the recaps the last weeks due to real life putting a dent in drama-watching).

IT kinda feels like false advertising: we were promised a lighthearted fun make-over "turn-the-plain-girl-into-a-star" drama and ended up with a makjang melo instead. With possible the worst set of grandmother, mothers, sisters, and sometimes friends anyone could ask for.

Hello Manin,

You have expressed some of my feelings and frustrations really well. I, at times found the recaps to be more interesting than the episodes, probably because of the side commentaries (from the recappers) and their insights.

I agree with what you said in your 3rd paragraph, I couldn't have said it better. I did come for JJS and for IU (and YIN, to an extent), and I wanted to support them. The thing is, when I watch a drama (which is a way for me to get out of real life), I don't want it to feel like a chore or homework (I have to do it), I want to look forward to watching the next episodes, anticipating them. I felt at times that way at the beginning, and for a while. Now it just seems that I am out of steam :-(, though I am still interested in seeing LSS's makeover (into a star), her romantic relationship with JH, and her sisters' romantic relationships as well. I am interested in the birth secret part of the plot (how it will be resolved and how it will affect LSS long term), however I also wonder how much time and screen presence must it take.

I do hope (and wish) that the show will correct some of its flaws. Yes, there is some cute, yet not enough for me to feel pulled in, as you said (and engaged. I like to feel engaged). On the other hand, if the viewers in Korea seem to like it the way it is (based on the ratings), then there is no incentive (really) for the show to make some changes, and we will get what we watch in the episodes. *Takes a deep breath, and reminds herself to be patient*

I agree with you that the recaps have at times been more interesting than the actual episodes, and about loosing steam for the drama making it feel more like a chore. That's why I've not felt like I "have" to watch up on the episodes I've missed, besides reading the recaps.

I am interested in the sisters plotlines (especially the oldest and bread man) and especially the LSS and Jun Ho parts as well as the makeover - that's the plotline I came for after all.

I can find the birth plot slightly interesting at times. And at least it was introduced fairly early instead of a last stretch plot line. My trouble with it is 1) the fact that it seems to have turned into the main plot instead of the "makeover", and 2) the fact that every development in it is stretched to the max.

I mean I understand some of mum's angst and anger (or the sisters reactions) however they take it from something you sympathize with and turn it into something that makes you stop caring. And when there is just to little quantity of cute to balance it out it just makes it all dragg more.

Hey Mannin again,

I hear you so clearly, it is uncanny :-). The reason why I made myself watch the episodes for a while was because I didn't want to miss any important fact or detail that might help me understand a scene down the road, so I thought I should watch the whole episodes. Also, I do tend to love details, so I felt that I should watch that way.

I was trying really hard to stay with it the way I was watching it, because I wanted to not miss the signs of romance between LSS and JH (yeah, and also bread man). But now bread man is not on screen much, and the romance aspect is taking its sweet time to get cooking. Yeah, 50 ep. family (weekend) drama, what was I expecting, really? (Actually, I was not expecting the very things you mentioned in your last comment to me, and those things have been slowly but surely make us question our commitment to this drama).

All in all, I agree with what you said in this last comment, and I too, am interested in the sisters' love lives. I do wish and hope this drama will continue to do well in Korea. As for us, online (and KBS World) viewers, well... (I am not even sure what to say at this point :-) )

Hello again Ivoire :)

It's good to know I'm not alone feeling this! :D I know I don't have much experience going into a korean weekend drama (besides watching Dong Yi), but I did expect some angst and trouble into it (have seen long running soap operas after all ;) ).

However it still feels like the birth conflict is the main plot line, and that's not the aspect of the show that got me interested, nor what had me hooked in the first 10 + episodes. The show has so much potential to do good, and I want it to be good. But I agree with you, it's hard to know what to say. You want it to be good, and there are some awesome parts, but do we want to sit through the rest of the episode? Or keep skipping to the few pats we actually want to see? I donno.

It's like I don't want to give it up, but at the same time I don't find myself caring enough to watch.

0

That is so well said. That pretty much sums it up.

I'd only add that LSS has a great deal to learn abt MR if she believes that MR would pull the interview from broadcast. Boy, is she in for a nasty surprise re the person that MR is!

Required fields are marked *

Ahh... MR.. she is such a lovely person and would totally make an awesome mum! I mean how could her daughter ever not like her after she ruins her chances and is being selfish? It's all for her own good after all!

Sorry, MR just brings out my sarcastic side :p I agree with you, after what MR has already done to LSS she should know better than expect MR to be a descent person about the interview.

At the beginning I could sorta see a redemption for MR, like there being a confrontation about the situation around the dad's death, but there was potential there. However once she ruined LSS's drama audition figuring out who's daughter she was, was a breaking point for me. And then all her actions after finding out LSS was her daughter has just intensified my feeling that MR doesn't deserve a redemption.

0

I think it's because there's so many episodes. If there were shorter episodes, all this melodrama wouldn't be so dragged out. I, too, am getting tired of it, and I hope that the next 20 episodes doesn't deal more with this Mi Ryeong vs Jeong Ae drama. After all, there's only 22 more episodes until the drama ends.

Required fields are marked *

Although episode count can help the dragged out feeling I don't think it's due to that fact in this case. I think it's more on the writer's cap, and him not balancing it.

As I've mentioned before the main plot line of turning her into a star has taken the back burner completely for the birth secret and the mothers angst and fighting. Which is when there being no proper development into it becomes noticing. It wouldn't be so dragging if we were dipping in and out of that in between the main story. But that's not what it feels to me is being done.

Hello Ivoire, That's me. You asked what was a Toon Ju.
In Joseon times, international trade wasn't carried out by individual merchants. It was carried out by decree. Merchant groups were given permission to represent their country in trade. A Toon Ju is the leader of such a Japanese merchant group.
Sorry this is off topic, but it's a response to a Qn that Ivoire posted n to her message here. Others pls ignore.

The show is becoming a pain in the butt, esp. in ep 28. It is so cliched n predictable.
The broadcast drives a wedge between LSS n nice mom, who then will be a noble idiot n let SS go, bcos she knows SS wants to act. She'll deliberately hurt SS's feeling, so that SS will leave this poor family to have a better life w Worst Mom on earth.
Yoo Shin will have immense difficulty w her love affair w doc, bcos chicken mom will go nuts when it is brought to light, blah, blah, blah.
We've all seen that many times b4. So just JB's Highlights or The gist is enough for us. But then it isn't fair that she has to suffer such an unfavorable good-to-tediuos ratio every week!

I am frustrated with LSS too, the character LSS I mean. She had a chance at her dream, and quit because of the bet. That would have made anyone else more determind to prove them the fools.
Then she quits her job at the retaurant, after it took her forever to find anything. I'm not saying she should stay there forever, but it sure does make Granny right ,she's a quitter, she never lasts.

Hard to watch when there's no one to cheer on anymore.

Seriously. I am watching for those two and am just hoping the writers can start focusing on their relationship rather than this other stuff. Jo Jung-seok is just so adorable and him barely being in the last few episodes is really annoying.

What's also frustrating is there is the whole secret about how the Dad died still has to come out. Ugh....

So many awful characters and so much makjang crap to wade through just to get a few measly minutes of Junho-Soon-shin interaction.. and they can't even be cute together anymore because of all the angst. WHY SHOW WHY.

Required fields are marked *

I know right?! This show might as well be called "Lee Soon-Shin's Moms, You're The Worst!", because both mothers are obviously taking up most of the screen time. =___=;;

Honestly, I love Young-Hoon to bits. But not with Soon-Shin. I am the only one who actually feel so bad for Jun Ho? I know it's all his fault in making the bet and blah blah blah, but why can't anyone see his sincerity through all of this? Soon-Shin is having a tough time, so I don't expect her to warm up to him all at once. But we're more than halfway through the drama, and the two main leads have yet to kiss, let alone realize their romantic feelings towards each other. Jun Ho is getting there already, but Soon Shin has WAY too much crap to deal with at the moment to ever even consider the prospect of dating Jun Ho.

This show needs to pick up its pace with the romance and comedy, and tie up the conflict between the two mothers fighting with each other over their "daughter". The problem with this drama is that there are way too many unlikable characters compared to likable ones. But I will still stick with it, because no matter how many flaws there are, it still has heart.

I wonder why the moms ended up taking so much screentime. Maybe because the age demographic for the people who do watch this drama in Korea is older? Like, it's mostly ajummas watching so the ajummas take the spotlight?

But even ajummas wouldn't mind more Jun-ho. Or Soon-shin doing anything other than being stuck inbetween all the ajummas (And one selfish sister. But I wouldn't mind them talking to clear things up.). Or even Bread Man. I mean, even GRANDMA likes Bread Man. I don't think there's any Korean ajumma who wouldn't.

I hope they either cut some screentime from the unlikeable characters (I'm looking at you, Song Mi-ryeong), and progress the story with the likeable ones. Like, how is one Bread Man scene per episode justified when Mi-ryeong gets a scene every five minutes???

0

Required fields are marked *

About the lack of screentime of LSS: I was thinking that maybe IU has other duties to honor & that's why her part has become so small. But then, why casting her as a lead if she's not entirely unavailable? Mind boggling!
I came here for JJS and IU: If Show doesn't rectify itself in the 4 next eps, then I'm out.

Despite the plot progressing at an almost glacial speed, I'll be sticking with this show to the end...mainly because of Bread Man. I'm still dying to watch him win over Woo Joo :D And I'm so curious why he was in prison. I will say that Episode 27 proved that Song Mi-Ryung is delussional and have no idea of most human emotions like attachment and love. How the hell is she a successful actress when she is so cluess about human being.

Episode 28 suggest that Song Mi-Ryung is probably a sociopath.

If I had made a drinking game so that I drank everytime she said "Guilty. Why should I be guilty. What did I do that was wrong." I would be nursing a huge hang-over right now.

Delusional is a good word for MR. That's what I keep thinking too.

And you hit the nail on the head with asking how can she be an actress? She has zero ability to feel empathy for other people, to understand what they might feel.

She doesn't think anything is her fault. Honestly, I am so tired of when she pulls her "What have I done/I haven't don't anything" face...

I still can't hate YS, yes she is harsh and mean and all, buuut she isn't a horrible person.

People shipping CW with Junho's sister, ugh :

1) CW doesn't like her back and doesn't have any interest at all.
2) she knows it and keeps forcing it, and even tries to win his family over.
3) she is a spoilt brat and it isn't really love but wanting something she can't have

-

JH being jealous:
Serves him right, if he doesn't man up, I don't care and I'm starting to ship manager with SS, he is sweet, they go along well, and have fun.

-

LSS, she better smart up if she really wants to be on the tv industry because the way she believes/trust everybody just makes her get into troubles, and then she can't handdle it.

-

This drama is having more annoying scenes than cute scenes, so I'll drop for awhile.

-

Other thing that annoys me:

Fans say this drama is good just because of SS and JH and talks bad about the rest and just care about main couple, always complaining about other characters and talking bad about them... it is annoying. Reminds me when Ojakgyo brothers aired and everyone just talked about JW and Uee.

I don't have YS either (not yet, not again yet), but she's being very immature and selfish. And in some way it doesn't quite make sense to me – she seems more intelligent than that, I would have thought it would have stood up and fought nail and tooth for LSS...

CW and Junho's sister.... I so knew the story was going to go this direction, with Mom thinking that's the girlfriend. SO LAME. CW needs to tell that girl to cut it now and tell his mom who he likes in reality. I don't blame YS being mad about this – of course, they should be communicating as a couple, but CW needs to sort the Yi-jung issue – before any marriage declarations. (CW and YS have to work at being couple first before that!)

I agree with all your points about Yi-jung, who, to me, has no respect for other people.

Required fields are marked *

That proposal was so out of the blue I'm not even mad at Yoo-shin for walking away. I'm mad at her for a lot of things, but seriously Chan-woo, what?

Also, about Yoo-shin, I think she KNOWS what reaction would be the most rational, but she just can't help but feel angry?
Like she perfectly knew what Chan-woo was going to say about Yi-jung but she was still angry.

Also, about her reaction to evertyhing concerning Soon-shin, she has this entire complex over Mom loving Soon-shin more than she loves her. So she's just been mad at/jealous of Soon-shin 24/7 for her entire life. It's a little sad that the only time she was nice to Soon-shin was when Mom went completely ballistic.

I agree with you on this one! I really can't bring myself to hate YS. She's the responsible one but also the most emotional so I understand how she can react like this. And in all fairness to her, she's not directly shouting at LSS, she still tries her best not to blow up on LSS despite her constant arguments with mom over this matter. So i deduce she does care for her but she's really just in a difficult phase right now.

When YS walked in on SMR putting an envelop of money on the table, and she looked at the contents and sneered at it, I loved her! I so wanted her to tear SMR a new one! Or give her a good hard slap, for all of us viewers!

Grandma is sickeningly sweet to Soon-shin, and openly says it’s because she’s blood family now.

Yoo-shin is really hard to take, and advocates “giving Soon-shin back” to her birth mom.

This episode clarifies that Grandma and Yoo-shin are the same person/people with a few decade difference in ages.

Everything that happens in their universe is about them. It dosent' matter who it happens to, it still about them. If someone died in front of their house, it wouldn't be about the dead person's family or lover, it would be about them and how it affect the way they think others see them. --no patience lefte with them.

I was done with this several weeks ago, though I liked reading the recaps because, well, they were more entertaining than the show.

I suppose we couldn't have an open thread for Cruel Palace too? Not like its AHYI or anything...

Yay, I like this open thread idea. I've decided to drop the drama for now. Ep 27 was the last straw. I was never truly on board with the main storyline, and I can't justify watching 2 hours for 30 seconds of bread ajusshi, which, let's face it, was the only reason why I was still holding on. I just want to see how he reconciles with the daughter.

But, alas, I think I'll just try to find recaps or something in other places to read up on it.

There was only so much annoyance I could take before it wasn't worth it anymore. Until Mi-Ryung understands how much of a a;ldkjf;alsdjkf she is, I can't watch it.

the writing is getting worse. more and more one dimensional than ever. they need to show us WHY the characters act the way they do. mi-ryung, for example. obviously she has some issues, but there must be a reason for why she's acting the way she is. she's done a complete turnaround from a few episodes ago when she was determined to ignore her daughter's existence. and grandma's sudden sympathy towards soon-shin? just bad, bad.

it was like this from the start, but ever since mi-ryung became determined to get soon-shin back, it's been infinitely worse.

still, i do agree, there are cute moments in the show that make it hard for me to stop watching. and i figure, at this point, why not just stick around and skim the episodes.

"too much chicken people" LOLS... Exactly my thoughts. I can't stand the chicken ahjumma - she always yells when she's talking.

Too little Jun ho and Soon shin - this I 10000% agree. The reason I watch this series is because the interaction between both of them which I love. Now the interaction is so little I am getting bored. Too much storey about Yi Jung trying to get Chan Woo. I want more Chan Woo and Yoo Shin.

Thanks JB for giving us a forum to rant (or rave sometimes). I still love this show and really really want it to be better.

More than that, I love Jo Jung Seok. I am enduring all the annoyances because I want to see this through for him. I have also fallen for IU, to be honest. I liked her in Dream High, but am really impressed with her here.

I am still hoping against hope that JJS and IU will get to sing even once in the drama. I will forgive the writer and PD-nim for all the mess they have made us wade through IF JJS and IU sing a duet! Now that will be epic!

Haven't been readings the recaps lately, but have been watching the show and wondering why I felt so indifferent about it (as compared to Hundred Year Inheritance). Now I know why, lol! Thanks for the highlights, lowlights, and open thread--great way to cut the load for you and yet provide an outlet for other voices.

Agree with the dragging of the birth issues and lack of action in the romances--the romantic aspect of weekend dramas have been on the rise and have added to their popularity (Ojakgyo Family, My Daughter Seo Young), so you would think that in a drama with so many potential pairings, they'd provide more fan service!

Haha I have it the other way, not been watching because I just never got around to pick up where real life interfered, but been reading the recaps (which awesome as they have been have not brought the "need" to watch the episode for myself)

What I have a problem with isn't so much the slow romance; I like that it has a build where you can actually see the progress as apposed to it feeling rushed and a bit out of nowhere like it is in some dramas (although yes it seems to have a wet fuse issue atm). But the birth secret/issue and it's very much in your face position in the drama is definitively dragging on for long. Not to mention this drama's female characters and their reactions...

As I said in another comment it's like we were promised a fun light drama where the center focus was on the quest to turn her into an actress, and then we got makjang angst galore instead.

Thanks for the recaps as they always highlighted the best parts of the episodes. For some time now I've mainly FF to parts of the ep that I like.
Mi-ryung is so delusional and self-absorbed that at this point it will take a miracle to redeem her character. I do definitely agree that we are on great need of more JH and SS. Bread man is also one of my favorite characters and I wish he got more screen time.

I can't say I blame anyone for dropping recaps on this one. As you noted, they highlight the best parts - and this drama simply does not have enough "best parts" to keep up with.

I am sick of seeing all the worst moms in Korea all assembled into one single drama, tired of the dragged out "secret" that everyone but SS knew, and tired of the over the top delusions that so many of the characters seem to have. There are better new dramas out there (I hear your Voice for one) now, so I just don't see much point on spending time recapping something with so little content. Ep 27 was kind of the last straw for me, even with 40 min of fast forwarding, it was bad. I doubt that I will follow this one anymore.

I like this open thread format! Thank you for keeping YATBLSS alive at Dramabeans!

I sooo know what you mean and how you must feel when you have to recap everything since I always skip a lot of the useless filler scenes... Ughhh the writers really need to step it up A LOT. As much as I loooove this show (during its early episodes), sadly to say, the writing has pretty much going downhill for the past few episodes. I really, really want this show to get better, though.

Again, more and more praises to IU and JJS! Amazing acting by both and their characters are just so lovable. But man, there's too many angry and mean characters in this drama. I mean, i know it's a drama and there has to be a storyline where someone needs to be an antagonist, but can't we have a drama without too much negativity? There's so much hatred, selfishness, screaming... it makes my head hurts :(

Thank you. Even I have started skipping.

Your short succinct low light summary? Spot on.

However love the OT idea for Sundays because I want to talk about anyone other than the SS and JH couple. JH is cute and IU is good but not to the level of absolute acting that some people are raving about.

There is more to the show than just IU. And IU being SS.

So welcome the OT idea so I don't inadvertently insult IU and have the fans coming after me. Here on DB, people would respect each other's opinion at least. And hopefully won't bash. So it would be nice to talk about the other 2 couples.

Thanks for the recaps so far.

I admit, I giggled a lot when Jun Ho just showed up at the cafe. So petty, so funny. But yeah, the writers seemed to have forgotten who's front and center on their promo poster. Three sisters only get a third of the time at this point compared to all the momma screaming. Maybe this is how weekend family dramas go, but I don't watch the show to see two women fight over which team the main character's on. Soon Shin frankly needs more to do.

Also, must note, Yi Jung is actually *really* pretty when she's made up in normal-person clothing and makeup. Still can't believe she was the super-fan in You're Beautiful.

BTW, since you guys have some more free time, I suggest maybe taking up Monstar? I'm enjoying that show way more than I thought I would with that ridiculous we're-trying-too-hard name. And at 12 episodes there's no problem with things dragging; the leading man already started fantasizing about his counterpart by the middle of episode 2. (That kid has a pretty vivid imagination, actually.)

LOL I don't accurately think that the ladies at DB have more time simply cos they are stopping YATBLSS recaps...they might be able to catch up on some sleep though. I hope.

Gummi did a pretty good weigh in on Ep 1 of Monster. It feels a little like DH redux but less sweet. Also as much as I want to like the male lead he is losing me. They need to show me why I should sympathise with him - cos frankly he's a twat. If I had to choose, I'd rather the ladies continue with recaps for ICHYV cos that drama is seriously tugging my heartstrings.

I agree about what you said about the male lead. I mean he's just a selfish brat wondering why the girl doesn't like him. I'm like, err, you've been nothing but mean so why should anyone like you? Also, she has been admirably patient with him so far imo =/

Soon Shin FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT AND STAND UP FOR IT WHETHER IT'S ACTING OR YOUR FAMILY!

While cute YH this is terrible time to be trying to date SS. She needs her friends right now man

Too many Moms and Grandmom on screen...oh weekend dramas

I barely watched ep 27 (and probably won't watch any more of this series), but I even got pretty annoyed at SS with her apparently total inability to stand up for anything to do with herself. She has gone back and forth on the issue so many times that it finally just got tiresome, and at this point I don't care if she gets into acting, opens a used car lot, or becomes a monk in Tibet. Why anyone in their right mind would put up with the abuse she has gotten from her (so called) family I just don't get, so it is time for me to move on to something better that does not grate on my nerves.

Love the new format - I feel like its fast forwarding a recap, which is exactly how I feel about YATBLSS. Way too much angst for my comfort and not enough cute. This is usually the reason I don't do long dramas. Sigh.

Am glad there are captured highlights though cos otherwise I wouldn't know what's going on plot wise given that I've stopped watching the drama after all the histrionics.

As a spoilerphobe, I wish the YTBLSS OT would continue to be on Weds. (like the recaps were) 'cause there's no way the subs for both eps. will be completed by Sun., and it's disappointing to have to miss the (commenters') party, so to speak. (I'm bummed that I couldn't read most of this post because the subs for ep. 28 aren't out yet, and I do not want to encounter spoilers.) It's been really nice having the recaps come out after the subs have been released.

But I gotta say: Yay for recappers who take care of themselves, avoiding burnout, and who take care of us by giving us an open thread to continue our ranting and raving-- Lee Soon Shin may be the best, but you are the bestest!

I fully understand your decision. I'm slowly falling out of love with this show. And not only because of the plot, but I also get the impression that the characters just behave on the writer's whim. I'm just hanging around in a hope that the “birth secret-mothers fighting” storyline will be soon over and we get back to the couples who are way more interesting (I'm actually interested in all 3 couples, not only the main one). It's just such a pity the writer chose the current direction, because there was so much potential in the beginning. And even the mother's aspect could have been handled so much better... well, at least bread-ahjussi keeps being consistently cute :--)

Last note, I personally would prefer to keep this OT on Wed/Thu, as I watch only when the subtitles are out (and no, this show is not right now interesting enough to watch it raw).

I totally agree that this isn't the best use of your talent - the fun in dramabeans (and I think the fun for you too) is to be able to analyse issues below the surface, and get a kick out of nuance whether it be in jokes or something more serious. But I'm still super grateful you recapped this far, and still going ahead with these open threads (where you basically do the same anyway, just without the effort of screencaps of faces that only further piss us off.) So thank you, thank you, thank you!

What's annoying me the most is that I got sick of this show by Episode 10 but somehow I still manage to tune in every Sunday and Monday. Not that I'm ever satisfied - I just flick through and pray there is one moment that is worth the loading time on my computer. And seriously, there's basically like. One. BUT I STILL DO IT.

It kind of sucks because a lot of the cast are genuinely great actors, and I feel they're getting wasted on such a show.

Yoonshin's (ex) boyfriend's plotline (I don't even remember his name, oops) reminds me a lot of My Daughter Seoyoung with the male twin. Except it's nowhere as exciting because we know what the ending couple is going to be here, and we know how it's going to happen, but we're really not interested in the development of the plotline (because it just means a lot of his mother.)

Even the plot with Bread Man is wearing me down now. He's still forever cute, but she's being too passive. Not that I mind if you look at it from a character perspective: why would she be interested? But after so many episodes of the exact same reaction, and her seemingly doing just enough to be polite, it drags for a drama. Sigh.

There are weekend dramas that manage to do the angst well enough that there seems to be plot and character movement. But this one feels like a recycled plot over and over again ..... leading me to feel IU is getting flat in her role. A lot of that really isn't her fault.

I feel like this is the most depressing comment ever, I hate being the one that complains endlessly. D:

I understand why you are dropping the recaps for this show. The characters are wearing me down especially the battling moms. Mi Ryung drives me crazy with her "What did I do wrong to feel guilty?" and the mopey / dopey mom who flip flops her emotions of hate/love for Soon Shin for what seems like an eternity.Getting sick of Yoo Inna's whining about how's she has to give in to Soo Shin being loved even though she's a real daughter of the family. She was nice for a little bit while she was dating Chicken Ajumma's son, but then she reverted to her selfish whining rants.
I like IU and Jo Jeung Suk and wish they show more of them then the peripheral characters. They're getting lost in the shuffle of characters, and they were so cute in the beginning.

don't worry yukiyukiku, i think the Korean audience are also sending their feedback with regards to our need for more SJH/LSS moments, based on what I read in their official site. So, eventually we will get there and--despite what others think--i actually feel the romance bit starting to set base. Only, they have no choice but to slow it down first coz the birth secret reveal is really such a heavy story that it will be weird to just totally shrug off that part and suddenly focus on the cute. They will need time for the issue to simmer down. Hopefully though, two episodes are enough time for them and we'll be able to get more romance next week!weee

Fans are complaining on the Korean KBS website as well - raising the same questions: why so much birth secret drama and so little of the initially light fun stuff. Bu, this time the PD's seem to be oblivious, or the writer is really so bad and doesn't know how to balance a long show like this so that it is fun throughout. If they give us too much romance now, what are they going to do for the rest 22 eps?
