Name That Drama: Poverty, vacations, and soulmates

Name That Drama is back! As always, if you’ve got a drama you just need to identify — maybe you saw it years ago and can’t remember much, or maybe you only caught part of it and never found out the rest — send us your requests so we can post new inquiries in future editions.

  1. Mel’s on the hunt for a period drama:

It’s a very old Korean drama, and because of the dull colours, I suspect that it was shot in the 1990s. The story is probably set between the 1930s to 1960s. There’s a single mom raising 6 or 8 children. Her oldest son, a teenager, works away from home in a rich family as a tutor. Her oldest daughter had a crush with the tenant. The youngest child is still a baby. The family is very poor and lives in a small village. The mom is a street hawker. The side characters, other than the family, are their neighbours, I remember, some of them being the village grocer. I watched the replay perhaps 5 years ago. I remember it’s heartwarming show about how this family overcome their poverty and obstacles together.

I know it’s difficult because it’s not a recent drama. Any help is appreciated!

  2. nimmy’s drama sounds fairly recent, which hopefully narrows down the window:

I suddenly remembered about watching this one drama way back around 2007-2010 (I can’t remember the exact year). It was airing on one of the English Korean channels. I can’t remember if it was KBS, MBC America, or Arirang.

Anyways, it opened up with the disclaimer that it was intended for 15+. Then it showed a girl squatting on a bathroom floor with her shoes on and then blood was running down her leg. I assume she was giving birth. The girl was in distress and very angry. I think she was cursing the father of the child. Then it cuts back, I assume, to the past before she became pregnant. She meets this one man who says he’s a writer and they have a conversation during a car ride together.

I know the details are very vague because it was so long ago and I never finished that episode, but any help would be appreciated!

  3. Natalia asks:

It was a really sweet drama (I think it was a drama) about a father-son relationship. What I could get is that:

    1. The father was divorced and tried to get as much time as he could with his small kid but his work was in the way.
    2. There was this really sweet scene in the beginning of the episode with the kid saying goodbye to his best friend.
    3. Then the kid spent the day at his father’s work place, but the kid always ended up in some kind of trouble, and while he was at his father’s desk or being taken care of by one of his father’s co-workers, the father was trying to give a good presentation for his bosses. In the end the presentation was a success, but the kid lost himself inside the building and couldn’t reach the elevator panel to use it, but the father found him.
    4. In the end of the day the father met the mother who was there to pick her son up and the father was troubled if he should go back to work or go to where his son was leaving in a bus with his mother or be there to say goodbye to his son. He chose to say goodbye to him and there was this really beautiful scene of father and son saying goodbye.

  4. sasha isn’t entirely sure this is Korean, but let’s give it a shot:

Hi, there was a short part of a drama I watched in a hotel when I was on vacation a couple of years ago. I wasn’t into dramas back then so I couldn’t differentiate what language it was in (either map or korean?).

The episode I watched was about a girl who went on a vacation and because most of the people in her tour group were with their lovers, she lied that her boyfriend was unable to make it (she’s single) to save herself from the embarrassment of going on vacation alone. One guy (the lead guy), whom she has met before, was coincidentally also in the tour group and embarrassed her in front of everyone by saying that she is single, just like him.

The episode was really hilarious but I couldn’t find out the name of the drama so YAY for Name That Drama!! Sorry that this is so vague and is only an episode, but I really wanna know the name of this drama!

  5. And beet’s drama does sound Soulmate-esque (which certainly used that motif), though I don’t recall exactly where in the series it occurred. Anybody else know?

Recently I was speaking to my friend about Plato’s Symposium and the idea that people used to be one body with 4 arms and 4 legs and were then split by Zeus into that we are now, and we wander around the earth looking for our other half.

I remember seeing this in a Korean drama/movie where the main female protagonist is walking out of a store. She is really sad and happens to look into the display window of the store and there is a television playing an animation of this idea.

Do you have any idea what this drama/movie is? I just can’t think of it! I thought it it might be Soulmate or Alone in Love but I haven’t been able to find the scene~ any tips welcome 🙂

Number 4 seems like a Thai movie named "Hello Stranger". The main leads' vacation is in Korea, most of the scenes are shot there so maybe that's why sasha get confused. It's a really funny movie which touches on lots of Kdrama cliche so I hope it's the right answer ^^

it does sound the same except in Hello stranger the girl did have a boyfriend but he lied to him regarding the trip cause he disapproves and she was not in the tour cause she was going to a friends wedding in Seoul...

But yes that drama is really. good, became a fan of Chantavit (main guy lead) after watching it.. he is so good and talented too, he co screen wrote that story!!

and of course you'll find a lot of Egyptians :D you know how addicting Kdrama is!
I still remember my first drama "Winter Sonata", everyone was watching that one in Egypt :D I was like 14 or 15 :D aigoo old memories!

I know! most of my friends got to know Kdrama either by Winter Sonata or My Lovely Samsoon

they are not many though, so I know what you mean by people laughing at you for liking kdrama hahaha! I laugh at them for watching Turkish dramas, I seriously don't like it! watching our drama is better :P though I'm not fond of our dramas that much! I either prefer watching american, british series or korean drama :D

believe me there is no one to talk to except my sister! that's how bad my condition is hahaha! most of my friends like kdramas but no one of them get obsessed like me and my sis! or can take a chance to watch a serious drama! they prefer rom-com! just trying to talk about melodramas they will go "winter sonata" all over me :D! you want us to cry every episode .. there is no way we are gonna watch that!

I loved "Secret Love" sure it'll be one of my favorite forever! "Wangs Family" family dramas is way too long :D most of the time I drop them in the middle, don't know if I will ever be able to watch a long drama and finish it! but I guess one day that will happen :D

really hope to talk to each other more often :D!

For beet's drama:

I do believe it is Soulmate and that the animated scene occurs at the very end of episode 8 as does the scene of Lee Soo-kyung standing outside the record store looking at the TV.

Mel's drama sounds like one I watched on tv a few years back. I don't know the name of the drama as well, as it was dubbed into Mandarin. I do, however, recognise the lady who is the actress playing the mother of the children and one of her sons.

If we are referring to the same drama, the mother is played by Jang Mi-hee (Mom's Dead Upset) and one of her sons (the chubby one) is played by Lee Chan Ho (God of Study).

The drama is not listed in either actors' list of work so I still can't find its name.

Hope this helps!

I'm pretty sure 5 is indeed Soulmates. It used footage from Hedwig and the Angry Inch that animated the split-apart story.

If you endure, it reaches a peak in the last few episodes which are actually a-m-a-z-i-n-g! I still listen to the soundtrack despite the subpar english <3

I was sort of meh about it. To me it felt kind of aimless and episodic, like an American sitcom. The male lead is smoking hot, though.

I liked it for its frank exploration of relationships & its indie vibe, but the ending definitely left me wanting more. It felt a tone of buildup with no real payoff, if that makes sense. Interesting show, though.

That's what I thought too!

I can't really remember the siblings too well, but there was one son who almost drowned in a river (??) and because of that he was mute for a while. And there was a daughter that was sent away to a relative's (??) home for a while but she does come back.

They would rent out a room at their house because they needed the extra money, and the mother and daugther that move in are really mean to the kids. They were from the city and they were just overall kinda snobby and catty.

I'm pretty sure it's from the late 90's cause it was one of the last dramas I watched before moving to the US, and it is definitely worth watching.

I also have a Japanese drama that I am having difficulty finding the name for. It's one where the girl by holding someone's hands can tell about their future romantic relationship. She would always sit in a coffee shop with two other guys, one old guy and a middle-aged guy. The beginning of each episode also began with her talking with a mysterious guy about her beliefs in love. It's a pretty recent drama, airing in the last couple of years. Anyway, if anyone could help, that would be greatly appreciated!

I would love to find the Japanese drama that started it all (then tried a Korean and haven't gone back!) . It aired in the Asian TV channel in Seattle (at midnight or so) about 10 year back - give or take a few. The rich storeowner fell in love with te humble designer/window dresser, but unknown to her, he was dying of cancer (typically upbeat plot . . .) . I'd like to watch it again just to see if it's a gret as I remember. Hope that's enough to go on! (Spoiler alert - he dies. ;) )

HI, Judith! It's really a very common name in the US - in the 1940s, many people named daughters after Judy Garland. When I went to college, our dorm had about 20 freshmen, half of whom were named Judith/Judy. But it's less common now, so I'm guessing you're not over 65, like I am. ;)

You'll find Judith as the 4th most popular name in 1940, the year after the release of the movie "The Wizard of Oz," starring Judy Garland.

Yeah, same here - and the clip I recall seeing did in fact have her in the bathroom. I am wondering if it was a remake or movie adaptation. The story seems very similar, but the scenes do not.

But it has been so long that I could be thinking of a totally different movie or drama.

Actually, I take that back. It could be 14 sai no haha. I had forgotten about the reporter she talked to. The part about squatting on the floor threw me off because I remember her being in the hospital on bed rest at some point.

It's not 14 sai no Ha ha.

Are you sure that #2 is Korean? That scene sounds so familiar to me. I was thinking it might be the Japanese drama "14-sai no Haha" but it's been so long since I've seen it I could be getting it confused with something else. And I did look if that scene is in 14-sai no Haha then it's not the first one.

Dramabeans~

I'm looking for two different dramas that I think/know Han Go-Eun stars in.

1. It's a sageuk and I know she does star in it. The male protagonist is a commoner who makes money by performing jultagi with different masks. I only remember the last part of the series where she gave birth to the main character's son and raises him by herself because the father was probably put in a position of power and she wasn't good enough. For one reason or another she gets sent to jail and her son picks up a mask just like the one his father used to wear.
2. A+B are a duo of guy besties. A is dating a girl (who I believe is played by Han Go-Eun) and B is also in love with her. B sends his bestie, A to jail so that he could have the girl. The only scene I remember clearly is a napping Han Go-Eun and B taking off her sleeping mask and waking her up and telling her to get her life together and forget about A.

I appreciate being eager, but it never makes sense to me when someone complains about how fast the writers work. Remember, this is volunteer and the lovely DB ladies have lives. I am sure the ladies would be flattered to know people are looking at the site often, but don't let your impatience drive you batty.

When I was a kid, I use to be the same way about waiting for the mailman to arrive. I'd dash down the second I heard the truck coming in hopes one of my international pen pals wrote. At least we DB readers don't have to wait for the latest recap to arrive by snail mail. Ha Ha.

I was also wondering if any of you could help my daughter and I figure out this one movie we've seen, but don't remember the name to.

We mostly remember the male lead who wears black thick rimmed glasses and for a good portion of the movie carried this massive golden teddy bear around, trying to give it to a girl as a gift.

During a part of the movie he breaks up with his girlfriend and goes to another girl's apartment, where she lived on the second or third floor. She came to the window, and at this point there's another boy in her house. She doesn't like the thick rimmed glasses dude, but he doesn't seem to know it. They talk for a while, but the glasses dude just stays outside, yelling to her window, he doesn't actually go in.

We believe we watched it around 2008ish, so it must have come out around then or before then.

Does this seem familiar to anyone? My daughter remembers it because it made her cry, it's about relationships and how it feels to break up...that sort of thing, but at the time we were only able to watch half the movie and don't know the ending! D: We appreciate any help you can give, thank you!

please help me find this drama but its an old drama that i watch when i was in primary school so the memory is a lil' bit unclear.

the characters live as a neighbor in squatters (don't know what it is called but the one u always see in KDrama where the poor character lives in). The male lead(ML) is a gangster/troublemaker(if i'm not mistaken coz he's always ends up beaten up) The female lead... i don't quite remember her, but in one scene she knocks on the ML doors but no one answer so she just barged in and ends up seeing the ML bleeding and she nursed him.

She lives with her female friend.

i watch it around in 2007-2012 since i watch it in my country in chinese dub. maybe the drama is about 3-5 years old before
