I Hear Your Voice: Episode 13

Truth and lies take center stage in this episode, to surprisingly cute effect. Not that the show is surprisingly cute, since it’s always been, but when your hero can read minds, the difference between knowing that and not… well let’s just say that Mind-Reading Boyfriend is now at the top of my wish list. I Hear Your Voice: ruining real-life expectations, one episode at a time.

EPISODE 13: “The words in my heart I couldn’t bear to say”

Hye-sung finds out that Min Joon-gook is still alive and that Su-ha kept his promise, and calls him happily with the news. He back-hugs her in tears, wondering how she could be happy about the killer being alive, and she just smiles and pats him on the head.

They ride the bus home together, and she starts rattling off all the things he can do now that he’s free of murder raps, like his high school equivalency exam and anything else he missed during the last year. She notes that she had to finish high school the same way, and says that they have an awful lot in common, actually.

He’s switched to banmal ever since the phone conversation pre-back-hug, but so far she hasn’t noticed, and she asks if he still doesn’t remember anything. He hesitates and then says no. Aw man, you’re back to lying the second you get your memory and powers back?

She tells him that he has to stick to the plan—as soon as he does recover his memory, he’s to never see her again. Ah, so that’s why you lied. He asks why, and she reminds him that it’s what they agreed, and there’s really no reason for him to be around her once he’s back.

She tells him to live his own life and stop mooching, and he frowns… until he catches her thinking: “Was that too harsh? No, it was okay. The messier it gets, the harder it’ll be for me to get over my feelings.”

Omo. He scans her, wondering to himself: “Feelings…? No, it can’t be…” He hears her thinking again that she has to clean up her feelings before he leaves, and not get caught. He prods, and they have this three-way conversation that cracks me up:

Su-ha: Do you still hate me?
Hye-sung: Yes.
Hye-sung’s Brain: No. I like you.
Su-ha: Do you want me to go?
Hye-sung: Yes.
Hye-sung’s Brain: No. I want to ask you to stay with me.

Hahahaha. If only all romances had a bullshit meter like this one. I love it.

Su-ha can hardly believe it even as he reads her mind, and he says in voiceover: “In that moment your lips were telling lies, but your eyes were telling the truth. Your eyes were saying the thing I so badly wanted to hear for eleven years… but to stay by your side, I had to pretend not to hear those words.”

They find the rent-a-cop duo guarding the street outside Hye-sung’s apartment, complete with sincere apologies and promises to put up security cameras to make her feel safer. Or, how about we move? Can we just move? Preferably to a district with better cops?

Su-ha reads Nice Cop’s mind and sees that he actually does feel terrible, and that he fought to get those cameras approved. Hye-sung wants more put up, and he agrees knowing that he’s going to get yelled at by his chief. Su-ha thanks him politely for going to the trouble.

Inside, Hye-sung looks at Su-ha askance and asks if maybe amnesia comes with a personality transplant, because he’s been so nice lately. And it’s only then that she realizes he’s been using banmal with her, and he awkwardly switches back to jondae.

It’s pretty funny how much he struggles to speak to her politely, but thankfully she tells him to do whatever he likes. He wonders to himself what she’d do if she knew that his father was the one who started all of this, convinced she’d hate him and never want to see him again. Aw.

Do-yeon calls to say that she’s put patrolmen and cameras up around her neighborhood, and Hye-sung asks if she called to brag about it. They each mouth nasty barbs at each other silently, but for once they’re not actually at cross purposes—Do-yeon wants to catch Min Joon-gook, and Hye-sung gets more security, even if she is the bait. Su-ha listens to the exchange with a worrisome look on his face.

Do-yeon arrives at home, when suddenly a man creeps up on her from behind. Oh, it’s Hwang Dal-joong, but that’s no less frightening to her, especially when he comes over to scream at her, asking if she’s Judge Seo’s daughter.

He grabs her arms and demands to see her father, and she makes a run for the intercom to call her parents. She turns around… to find Hwang Dal-joong lying in the street, unconscious. She runs over to him and tells Mom to call emergency, but in the midst of her panic, she catches the look on Dad’s face. It’s frozen in shock and fear.

They take him to the hospital and the doctor tells them about the brain tumor, and then the detective arrives to add that Hwang Dal-joong stabbed someone as soon as he was released from prison. It puts everyone on edge, for very different reasons.

In the morning, Su-ha secretly puts the phone-tracking app back on their phones, and makes breakfast. Hye-sung tries to avoid him, but this time he orders her to sit, saying he’ll wait outside.

She’s halfway through a banmal-doesn’t-mean-you’re-the-boss-of-me rant, when suddenly she spots a cockroach and freeeeaks out, jumping onto his back. Haha. It’s even better when he points out that they’re watermelon seeds, and she cringes, mortified.

But it helps to smooth over the avoidance issue, and she tells him to sit down so they can eat together, telling herself that it’ll be okay and there’s no need to push him away so harshly now because he’ll leave eventually.

They eat breakfast laughing and chatting just like the old days, and then he walks her to work, holding her stuff and pulling her close. He steals little glances at her the whole way, and then he does this happy sigh that just does me in.

Hye-sung’s house phone rings once they’re already out, and I don’t know who’s on the other end, but it’s creeping me out.

Su-ha hears Hye-sung thinking to herself that she needs to do something to thank Kwan-woo for taking Su-ha’s case, but feels weird about it. So he chimes in to ask what Kwan-woo might like as a gift, being very deliberate with his words: “He helped ME with MY case, so I should thank him.”

She tells him that he likes to go hiking, so Su-ha heads to the outdoorsy store and asks the clerk for the best thing in there, something that he can make a big deal about giving as a gift. HA. Oh, the petty rivalry. “Include the price tag in the package, please.” Lol.

He plops the hiking shoes down on Kwan-woo’s desk with a half-assed thank you, and offers to repay him for the lawyering. Kwan-woo turns down the offer, and asks instead for Su-ha to cheer him on—he’s reapplying to be a public defender.

Kwan-woo: “It’s time for me to reclaim my place.” The meaning isn’t lost on Su-ha, and Kwan-woo reminds him of his words to him before. He asks for Su-ha to cheer him on, and Su-ha scowls, “Does it look like I’m going to do that?” Kwan-woo laughs, having expected as much.

It looks like Kwan-woo’s words about a suit not making the man did sink in though, because today Su-ha grabs a pamphlet for the police academy. Yay.

Lawyer Shin races to the prison and asks with tears brimming in his eyes how his friend Dal-joong could’ve landed back in jail for attempted murder after having just been released.

Dal-joong says with deadened eyes that he should’ve killed her. “It was her. Twenty-six years they said I killed her. My wife is alive!” He admits now that even he believed that he could’ve gotten drunk and accidentally killed her, but now the reality sinks in: “I didn’t. I didn’t. Twenty-six years. Twenty-six years!”

Lawyer Shin asks why he stabbed her now, and Dal-joong just says he’s already a dead man, and it wasn’t a person he stabbed, but a ghost.

Do-yeon gets assigned to the case, and tells Mom about it, thinking it an interesting one. You don’t even know the half of it. She says that the wife cheated on her husband and was always wanting to leave him because of his debt, which is why he attacked her twenty-six years ago. Meanwhile Judge Seo gets on the phone to arrange to have the case reassigned to a different prosecutor.

Lawyer Shin mulls over how to defend Dal-joong in court, thinking of his tear-filled plea to prove his innocence. Lawyer Shin argues that he can’t be innocent if he stabbed her, but Dal-joong just cries and pleads.

He sits in on Hye-sung’s case: a domestic violence dispute that ended in manslaughter. Do-yeon is pushing for murder, while Hye-sung argues that it was self-defense. I doubt Judge Kim is listening to either of them though, because he’s too busy trying to figure out how to cool down the courtroom in the sweltering heat, in a segment that just ends with him as the stay-puft marshmallow judge.

Do-yeon argues that the defendant should’ve cried for help, and so Hye-sung shows a video of her standing in the defendant’s apartment complex. She plays loud music and within ten seconds the neighbors are shouting at her that they’ll call the cops. But then when she plays a recording of a domestic dispute, there’s no reaction, and no cops called.

Kwan-woo goes to his interview for the public defender position, and they ask how they can trust he won’t quit again. He says that it’s because he’s already done so that he’s the better choice, and adds that he now knows exactly what a public defender ought to be, because of Jang Hye-sung.

Do-yeon catches up to Hye-sung after their case and scoffs that she thought she was up against Cha Kwan-woo in that courtroom earlier. She calls her out for copying his tactics, and Hye-sung points out the difference between imitating and studying—she watched Kwan-woo and learned from him, so what’s the harm in that?

Back to Kwan-woo in his interview, where he says that he and Hye-sung saved someone from wasting his life away in jail. We cut to Su-ha, taking his high school equivalency exam. Kwan-woo: “He is the reason and the motivation for Jang Hye-sung and for me, to be public defenders.”

Do-yeon returns to her office to find that the Hwang Dal-joong case has been reassigned. She gets upset, having already worked on the case, but then when her colleague says it happened after their boss got a call from her father, she starts to get suspicious. Woohoo. I always like it when you get a hunch.

Hye-sung comes home and runs to catch the ringing house phone, but misses it. Su-ha sets the table for dinner while Hye-sung does laundry, and she fishes a piece of paper out of the shirt he was wearing today.

It’s information for how to apply for the police academy, and he runs over to tackle it out of her hands, getting all handsy in the process.

She lights up to realize he’s thinking about his future, but he brushes it off like it’s just something he might maybe try, refusing to take it seriously in case of failure. Over dinner, she tells him that he has the grades to get in, so he should try his best and take it seriously.

I just love the little things, like the fact that he holds down the rest of the sesame leaves so she can get at the top one. He catches her wondering to herself what she’ll do if she gets used to him being around and has a hard time when he’s gone, “Just like a year ago…” Awwww.

He asks what she’s thinking, and she lies that she’s wishing he’d hurry up and leave.

In the morning, she notices the post-it memory fragments on his door and wonders how much longer it’ll take before he recovers his memories. The phone rings again, and this time Hye-sung picks it up but there’s no answer on the other end. I don’t like this ringing phone business…

Su-ha immediately gets suspicious and checks the phone log while Hye-sung is in the bathroom. Every number he calls back is no longer in service, except for one—a random person answers and says it’s a payphone.

Su-ha writes down the phone log and meets the cops at the payphone later that morning, and they discover a convenience store CCTV across the street. They head over and check the footage…

It’s Min Joon-gook. Ack. We knew it’d be him, but still, the confirmation puts me on edge. Su-ha takes one look and knows—he’s been calling to find out if Hye-sung still lives there. Craaaaap. I don’t like that look in your eye. We just got you back. Do we have to worry about you doing something dumb again?

He rushes home and starts packing a bag. Noo! Oh, phew, he’s packing two bags—one for Hye-sung and one for him. I adore that he includes a picture of Hye-sung and Mom, and some law texts.

At work, Hye-sung is stunned silent by different news altogether—Lawyer Shin tucks his tail between his legs and asks for her help on the Hwang Dal-joong case. She hilariously milks it, as is her style, and Lawyer Shin begins to tell her about the case.

Dal-joong was released and staying in the hospital, when he happened to run into his wife, who was working there. She drops the vase in her hand in shock, and tells Dal-joong that she’s sorry, but it was the best she could do back then—she hated him and his debt.

She cries that she didn’t want to raise their daughter in that mountain of debt. But dude, murder? She says that their child grew up wealthy and taken care of, which is more than they ever could have done. He strangles her in rage, and then reaches for a shard of broken glass.

Hye-sung thinks the circumstances of the case make it a long shot, but one that seems worth trying to fight. Lawyer Shin says the first problem is the fact that the wife has a whole new identity, and so that makes it difficult to prove that she faked her own death.

She’s even burned off her fingerprints, which he says is from years of working in restaurant kitchens, but if the woman was willing to cut off her own friggin’ hand, I wouldn’t put it past her to have burned off her prints to disappear. He says the only way to prove it would be to find the daughter and run a DNA test.

She goes for a spin in her revolving door, and Su-ha pulls her out by the hand. He tells her that Min Joon-gook’s been spotted, and that he’s been calling her house to see if she lives there, which means it’s no longer safe.

He takes her to his place, and leads her all the way there by the hand, assuring her that there are lock codes and cameras everywhere, and that for now it’s the safest place to be.

Once inside, she finally wriggles her hand free awkwardly, and then he catches her worrying in her head about him running off to hunt down Min Joon-gook again. Right? That’s what I’m sayin’! He nearly bursts a reply at her in frustration, but stops himself just in time.

To put her fears at ease, he says he’s going to enlist everyone’s help—the cops, Kwan-woo, and anyone else—to keep her safe.

She goes looking for something to eat, and makes her infamous Refrigerator Remnant Rice. He watches with a scowl and asks, “Dog food again?” He gives her the spoon and takes the rice spatula just like the first time, and then she has a delayed reaction at his word choice: “Do you… remember?”

She points out that he called it dog food the first time, and he hems and haws for an excuse, saying he ate something similar for lunch is all.

She accepts it at face value, thinking to herself that there’s no reason for Su-ha to lie to her about that—he’s not that kind of person. Ouch, that’s gonna hurt later.

Min Joon-gook creeps around Hye-sung’s neighborhood that night, being careful to avoid the cameras and ducking out of sight when a patrol car comes around. He looks up at the rooftop and sing-songs (as if he wasn’t already creepy enough, thanks), “Where are you all hiding?”

Do-yeon tells Mom about Dad reassigning the Hwang Dal-joong case, and Mom adds that Dad does get really weird every time she mentions that name. She wonders if maybe it has anything to do with his first case as a judge.

Do-yeon goes to check the case file from twenty-six years ago, and there’s Dad’s name on the record as the presiding judge. Why it took Mom connecting the dots for you to figure this out is beyond me, prosecutor who supposedly put work into the case, but whatever.

Meanwhile Hye-sung and Lawyer Shin go to the adoption agency to find out about the daughter’s adoption (she was named Hwang Ga-yeon at the time), but the agency rep says it’s a closed file and she can’t reveal any information. Hye-sung tries anyway, which is as hilarious as it is futile.

Kwan-woo and Pretty the Paralegal get all amped up before checking the results of the public defender interview, and Kwan-woo opens the email…

Aw, he didn’t make it. Kwan-woo does his best to have a stiff upper lip, and just says he’ll try again next time. He points out that he was in second place, which Pretty argues makes it worse. I agree. Why tell a guy he almost got the job but still didn’t?

Su-ha comes in and hears the news, and Kwan-woo blames him for not cheering him on: “Did you maybe put a curse on me or something?” Ha. Su-ha says he might’ve before but he wouldn’t now, and Kwan-woo is taken aback at the change in attitude. He asks why, and Su-ha says that Min Joon-gook is back.

On their way back from the adoption agency, Hye-sung says she’s going to make a pit stop, and already I’m panicking any time she’s alone. But then Kwan-woo runs up to say that he’ll accompany her, and that he’ll keep doing so from now on as her bodyguard—Su-ha stopped by and told him about Min Joon-gook.

And eek, it’s not a moment too soon… Min Joon-gook is thirty feet away, watching her every move.

Su-ha goes down his checklist of people to alert about Joon-gook, and the last is Do-yeon. He takes a breath and then heads to the prosecutor’s office, and sees Do-yeon heading out. She runs into Dad outside, and she confronts him about getting her off of Hwang Dal-joong’s case.

He lies that he didn’t, Su-ha reads Judge Seo’s mind. Something he hears surprises him, but we don’t get to hear what it is.

He goes to pick up Hye-sung after work, and hears her thinking that it’d be so nice if Su-ha could read minds again so she could find out about the adoption. But she quickly amends that thought: “No, it’s better for him not to have that ability. It was so hard on him.”

And then again at the bus stop, she’s engrossed in thoughts about the case, wondering how she’s going to get the information she needs. He’s itching to help her, but can’t bring himself to admit the truth, and goes back and forth, thinking back to Hye-sung’s blind faith in him during the trial and then again the other day when she told herself Su-ha would never lie to her.

He thinks: “If you knew the truth, would you look at me this way again?” She notices a pen mark on his cheek and points to her own. Without a word he just leans in and kisses her on the cheek. Omo. It’s a nice callback to the time she had the same misunderstanding.

She gets flustered and explains what she was trying to say, and he just pretends he misunderstood her. Cheeky. It only makes him sigh though, more torn about the right thing to do.

The cops swing by Hye-sung’s place that night and wonder if there’s anyone else that Min Joon-gook might have revengey feelings towards, and decide they should stop by Do-yeon’s house too.

Kwan-woo texts Hye-sung to make sure she got home safely, but oh crap—he’s the one who’s in trouble. Min Joon-gook is standing on his street, waiting for him to come home.

Thankfully Kwan-woo spots him first. Run! Run away! He puts down his briefcase and takes off his glasses, and then wraps his tie around his hand. What? You’re gonna fight him? This is a terrible idea.

He sneaks up behind Min Joon-gook, fist at the ready… but before he can strike, his phone rings with a reply from Hye-sung that she’s home safe. Eep. Joon-gook whirls around and gets the jump on Kwan-woo, and they struggle.

Kwan-woo manages to knock Joon-gook off his legs, but he’s armed with a sharp wooden plank and he raises it to Kwan-woo’s throat. Kwan-woo says he won’t tell him anything, but Joon-gook says in a surprisingly calm tone: “I didn’t come to find out anything. I came because I have something to tell you.”

And then at home, Su-ha hedges for a long while and then finally says he has something to tell Hye-sung. “I know who Hwang Dal-joong’s daughter is. It’s Seo Do-yeon.”

It’s not a huge shock since Judge Seo’s pretty much been wearing his neon birth secret hat for a while now, but Hye-sung says that’s ridiculous and doesn’t even consider that it might be true.

But Su-ha explains the circumstances, as we watch it in flashback: After Judge Seo’s first case that put Hwang Dal-joong away for murder and put him on the path to glory and success, the not-so-dead wife came looking for him. He was shocked that she was still alive and that she went so far as to cut off her own hand to get away from her husband, but she claims it was what she had to do to survive.

She knew that Judge Seo wouldn’t risk overturning the verdict that put him on the map, and basically offered a deal: if he raised her daughter, she’d disappear forever.

Back to Su-ha, who says that he accepted the deal, and that Do-yeon is that daughter. Hye-sung can’t believe that two people would orchestrate all that, and ruin a person’s life in the process. “Hwang Dal-joong spent half of his life rotting in jail! Wait… how do you know all this?”

Took you long enough to ask. That’s the reaction he was waiting for, and he explains that he went looking for Do-yeon earlier today and saw her with her father. And then he saw Judge Seo’s eyes…

Hye-sung: “Saw his eyes? Did you…”

He ekes out a tiny “Yes,” and can barely let the rest of the words escape: “That ability… it came back… with my memories…”

COMMENTS

Don’t kick him out because he remembers you! Oh wait, they’re living in his house now. But still she’s the boss, so I’m just cringing and holding my breath for her response. She won’t make him go away now, right? Not when Min Joon-gook is after her and they’re both in danger. And in the very least I trust that Su-ha will argue with her now that he knows she has feelings for him. His fear about her impending reaction to the truth about Dad is something that I understand, but I do think that he’s underestimating how much she cares about him. More than anything, if she pushes him away now it’s because she can’t get a grip on her own feelings, which in itself is rather adorable.

What I like about the back and forth with this couple is that their separations and reunions aren’t for the nobly idiotic reasons that are so common in dramaland. I won’t count them out because we have a while to go (and even longer with the extension confirmed), so there’s plenty of time for one or both of them to become idiots, but I like that their motivations so far have been driven by either selfish desire—to be loved, to avoid their worst fears—or just plain noble ones, like running to each other’s rescue. And of course when you add life and death stakes, it only gets better.

Storywise, I’m glad that Min Joon-gook is back. Things just move along at an altogether different speed when he’s around, and I can feel the massive difference in pace when he’s not terrorizing people. I’m fine with spending lots of time on the Hwang Dal-joong case because it’s so central to our characters, but the long stretches in the courtroom with the Case of the Day could really be cut down, especially at this point in the story. I like the beat where both Kwan-woo and Hye-sung are admitting they’ve learned to be better lawyers because of each other—something we’ve been waiting for since the beginning. But Hye-sung’s case that led up to that should’ve been a quick montage. It was the only time in this episode where I actually felt my brain wander off.

At least we’re getting somewhere with Hwang Dal-joong’s case, with its ties to so many of our characters. I don’t really care about Do-yeon’s parentage in and of itself, since we’ve known for a long time that she’s not biologically related to Judge Seo, and he’s been glaringly obvious about dodging any mention of Hwang Dal-joong. I do like her character though, so I’m interested inasmuch as it affects her, especially now that Hye-sung has privileged information and has to choose what to do with it. It’s their friendship that interests me most, and hopefully this case will be a turning point for them.

And of course the romance continues to have me by the heart. Who knew there was this much cuteness to be had in denial? After that stretch in the amnesia arc where Hye-sung lied and lied and broke his little puppy heart, this reversal is so perfect. I love how much there is to glean in a romance when one party can read the other’s mind. It’s a fantastic use of Su-ha’s powers to have her not know for an episode that he’s regained his memories AND his abilities, so that he can actually see for himself how much she’s baldly lying to his face about her feelings.

I’m glad it’s only for an episode though, because I was right there with Su-ha, inwardly cringing when she was thinking that he’d never lie to her. It was starting to feel wrong, and I’m glad he acted on his impulse to do the right thing and admit the truth, despite his worst fears. I love that whether or not his powers are intact, that thread of deciphering truth from lies is ever-present and always shifting based on the dynamic that’s in play, whether it’s amnesia, denial, or just plain fear of a broken heart.

She should have asked him to hand over the tang top as well. Or else one of them has to hand wash it. And it wouldn't be very environmentally sound, would it? ;)

You're right, you're not supposed to use the machine until you have a full load! So they should have put all their clothes in there. You know. For the Earth an' all.

0

ALL their clothes?
Ke ke ke.
Wicked laugh.

0

Nope, Asians tend to load their clothes into the washing machine one shirt at a time, and only run the thing when it's full. So your fears of environmental unfriendliness are unfounded. :)

P.S. I know this comment is super late.

0

I can't believe she didn't even notice his well toned upper body. I would have totally lost all my previous conversation thoughts and got flabbergasted. Worse, he would have been able to hear those thoughts!

It was obviously for product placement purposes. Did you not notice how the camera lingered on the Persil laundry detergent? But I'm happy for the fanservice. ;)

YES. That detergent shot was really funny. It's a Commercial break w/o being a commercial.

This episode's PPL was so blatant from Pretty the Paralegal making a coffee run at Hollys Coffee to Su Ha gifting Merrell hiking shoes to Kwan Woo.

Anthony would be so dam proud.

0

Pretty well incorporated though and not too in your face. Gold star Mister Producer!

LOL...Anthony!!!

Just can't help it but everything they do together at home just screams NATURAL and MEANT TO BE, from eating dog food together, to talking about their day, doing laundry, cooking, cleaning.. it's been a while since i've seen an OTP that worked together that well!
Most of the time other couples are too busy bickering(not complaining, 90% of k-drama OTPS bicker before falling in love) but su-ha and hye sung's compatibility and team work makes it hard NOT to ship them. Esp. at a time now where both are lonely and NEED each other.

I'm really amazed at myself how perfect I think they look together. He really does NOT seem like a kid, even though he's all puppy-like and adorable. And she's a grown up yes but she's so playful and hilarious with her spitefulness and everything that she just FITS him. And I actually truly swoon every single time they rescue each other or something big happens and they're each other's first thought. They just belong together. They just do.

Cha's a good man but he needs to go after Do-Hyeon and they can be hilarious and cute together, too. Sorry, Pretty the Paralegal.

You put it perfectly.

I know that there's a slight iffy factor due to their age difference. However, they're perfect together in every way because he seems older than his age and she acts younger than she is. In some ways, they're so similar yet are the complete opposite: she's a slob while he's clean and organized. They truly complement each other.

I adore this episode (maybe one of my favorite ones) simply because they got a chance to just be themselves around each other -- domestically. The way they might be able to live without MJS around.

1

They certainly really look good together. In Cyrano, I totally cringed at the ending where the otp kissed, cause I think the guy look sooooo much older than the girl. But these two, they look perfect.

0

Yeah! They're so domesticated! I love it!!!
We can thank the extension for giving us so many awesome OTP moments for this episode 'cause in regular episodes they only have like 1-2 or at most 3 OTP moments but here...damn...it's like raining cuteness all around for this two! I'm in kdrama heaven right now!
..and yeah showing off those sexy biceps definitely icing on the cake...

If it was the extension that made it rain OTP goodness... well, then I guess I'm really grateful. If all the other episodes are like this, I've got no complaints.

And I think the earlier episodes did a number on me when it comes to Min Joon-gook. When he comes on the screen now I literally cry tears from fear.

If they end it by saying they found out it was just sibling love between them I will have to boycott k-dramas. If he goes to the academy, becomes a cop then they get together would be a better ending. There is not that many years between them.

So I was watching this episode with my 5-year-old niece who can barely read simple words. However, she's watched other episodes with me, and she gets that the "handsome boy" (her words for Su Ha) really, really likes the "pretty girl" (Hye Sun).

Cut to the scene of her doing his laundry (hello defined muscles, LJS, you've been working hard all around!) and him setting the table, and my niece asked, "Auntie, did they get married already?" SEE! If a 5-year-old can see it, then it's glaringly obvious!

They have to end up together, they must! Please writer nim? Even if, as girlfriday says this show is "ruining real-life expectations, one episode at a time."

Yet another roller coaster episode T_T The OTP scenes made up for it though. Love all the OTP moments. Backhugs and kisses on the cheek. gaaah. SooHa x HyeSung shippers are going craaaazy ♥

There's just so much twists in this episode and they all work. The writer is just so clever. You really have to pay attention to the little details. Even the crayons that daljoong brought when he was freed and doyeon's statement that she had to quit art classes to work hard to get her father's recognition. And how creepy can min jong gook get. so scary T_T
It's touching too how he admitted that he got his memories back even though he knew that it might potentially be a reason for her to push him away just so he could help in hyesung's case. I'm scared how she will react >..

I NEED THE NEXT EPISODE NAAAAO.

1. Well, since Min is around, SH has a legit reason to hang around.
2. She can't pretend that she doesn't like him anymore. Lies are useless now. So she'll have to own up to her feelings for him, in front of him.

"I love, no, like you, but you r too young. You should be with sb your own age."

Like that has a chance in hell to convince SH. Ha ha ha.

also, I hope she doesn't grow back her feelings for cha-what's-his-name for feeling sorry so many times.

Doesn't look like she has 'feelings' for Cha. She was thinking to herself how to repay Cha for his help in SH's case, lunch? what? And she thought it was such a burden. Doesn't want to have to be entwined w Cha.

This couple is just. Omgaw.
Another reason why there's no noble idiocy or misunderstandings was because of the whole i hear your voice ordeal. Every time she's spitting lies he hears beyond it -- the truth. And that makes me feel so much better, because puppy is not heartbroken.
I did feel this episode was somewhat slower because of hwang dal joong's case but i have been starting to warm up to do yeon so there's a little ounce of care for her.
Every time i see min joon gook floating around hiding in places and showing up in front of our characters, I'm literally screaming at my screen. I admit not taking this villain seriously but now he just straight up creeps me out!
Favorite scene of this episode? It was hard to pick (the kiss on cheek was too cute), but i loveed the laundry one where he tosses his shirt and she does the laundry while he cooks. <3

Thank you so much for your recaps

Today's episode was really cute, and it's one the few episodes during which I was relaxed and not anxious. I still had to live stream it even though I don't speak Korean. To be honest , part of me is scared about the 2 episodes extension, but I love the show and I trust the team to deliver ( okay, I want to trust them!)
I can't believe how someone could have an affair, cut her hand, frame her husband and give up her only daughter can exist. Part of me is wondering who is worst, her or MGJ. He is someone who was guided by revenge ( at least at first), but her she is someone who was selfish. Realistically, she killed Hwang in a slow and painful way.

Despite the cuteness in this episode and the fact that I dont care about the age difference between SH and HS. There were parts that he felt too immature to be in a relationship with her. When they held hand and the camera showed both of their backs, she looked very professional in her suit and he looked like a teenager in his jeans and sneakers. I think that he needs to mature and start thinking about his life and what he wants in life and what his ambitions.

And as Su-ha himself said in a previous episode to one of the rent-a-cops: "I think I may be better at this than you guys." LOL. I guess that was a foreshadowing that he might consider trying out for the police academy.

He HAS been "thinking abt his life and what he wants in life and his ambitions."

First, he wants HS.
Second, he wants a real job w future that allows him to help ppl in danger, to protect them, n to get the bad guys.

It has been mentioned 3 times in the previous ep and this that the Police academy is VERY difficult to get into. That solicits a laugh fr me each time. Look at those bumbling idiots of the neighborhood police! They don't even know where they put their own gun! THEY passed that Really Difficult exam? Ha.

The writer must have missed John Belushi's Police Academy 1, 2, 3 and 4!

Short answer: Writer seems to be aware of it and has been trying to slowly fix it, but maturity takes work and time to come around to. It's Soo Ha's character arc. His ability to stand without HS, have his own goals, etc.

Longer answer:
She's been attacking the problem from about episode 1-2?

When he threw the diary in the trash, she kinda showed that was the point he was going to change as a character and not live solely for HS. (Yes, there is writer jargon for it)

She's also been working on seeding him maturing and moving forward in other ways. Police academy, not stabbing Mr. Creepy, not always acting emotionally, taking care of his own business without HS's help, etc. It's really small things here and there, rather than large changes and back slides like HS's arc. (Mostly because maturity is that painful in the first place, whereas change in morality can flux a lot.)

Notice that HS was after him about the GED thing and he'd already done it. Before she had to tell him to do it for him to do it.

You have to pay attention to catch how he's changing.

I think someone at soompi mentions about the difference between the National police academy and the normal police academy.
The one Suha is applying is for the higher ranking police, like a detective or something, and its much more difficult to enter.

I think that I might misunderstand your comment. Surely being a student and dressing like one doesn't make one immature. My husband went back to graduate school in his late 30's and my sister went back to school in her late 40's. When at school they dressed like students (even some of their professors dressed casually).

About HDJ's wife cutting off her hand and faking her own death. Do you know what kind of determination that takes? He must have been a horrible husband. That doesn't excuse her actions, but he admitted to himself that he thought he might have done it while he was drunk. So that means he's been violent while drunk before. I can see her motivation for doing what she did. To go as far as cutting off your hands means asking for a divorce will do you no good. We've seen the water-down by 26 years version of HDJ, but we have no clue what he was like when he was young and what their marriage was like. And we never will - all that's lost in a haze of time, and you know how emotions change memories. Although this is a Kdrama, so I'm sure we'll get a crystal clear flashback one of these episodes.

I thought Hye Sung wouldve noticed that he recovered his memory. The little details in Su Ha's mannerisms, the way he speaks and his clothing are all reminiscent of Original Su Ha. I don't know if that's mostly to the credit of LJS or the director, or probably both. I also like that we've been hearing a lot Su Ha's thoughts alot more. I thought it was an added effect to show that now SH could focus on his own thoughts with the amnesia since we didn't get much insight before but I'm glad it's continuing after he got his memory back like he's more keenly aware of both himself and others than before.

I laughed so hard at the scene in the hot courtroom where the judge tried to turn on the fan with the feet. Who would've guessed that some of the comic relief would come from the judges? All the characters stay true to what we've already seen and all their actions seem reasonable and grounded in understanding who they are/ what their past is. Yay for Do Yeon to continue to pick up on things quickly. Welcome to the Daddy Issues merry-go-round!

Another good court-related moment was when Lawyer Oska (ha, I can't stop calling him that now) and Hye Sung were saying that they learned from each other (like JB mentioned). I think often times dramas do the opposites attract thing and only one character shows growth so I'm glad to see both characters changing for the better.

I agree about the difference in mannerisms between Su-ha and Amnesia!Su-ha. LJS (and yes, I guess the PD too) deserve a lot of credit for how they've made it so convincing. There is a marked difference not only in speech but in the facial expressions as well, and sometimes, even how he walks. And Amnesia!Su-ha never got so physical with Hye-sung, I was wondering why she never gave it a thought beginning from that back-hug.

For the cute, I think it would be hilarious if she tried to kick him out. My worried side is concerned she might try to leave instead. And to that I say don't do it! If only just for safety's sake...There is safety in numbers! Su-ha is swallowing his pride to keep her protected, so she'd better be cooperative.

Plus I just love the idea of them being at his place. She was on home ground before, clearly in charge in her home even if he did get a little naggy :) But now she's the guest. I'm curious if we'll see this change their dynamic at all. Then again, with death threats looming maybe there will be bigger problems getting screen time.

For the first time I actually watched part of an episode raw...I just couldn't resist! It was both fun and frustrating, seeing just how much I could understand and yet wondering what was being said. Ah show, I'm going to miss you when you're done, so extension, please be good, huh?

Some thoughts I had from the show :)

-As usual I really enjoyed Hye Sung this episode. Her denial, how she responds to others, her utter brashness in the face of obstacles. And oh so petty with her boss. In any other character I would find this annoying...but somehow she does it and I'm laughing. She is definitely growing, but she still is who she is.

-I hope they do good things with CKW...I'm nervous that MJG is going to try to twist him about somehow. But I think that he's learned a lot since he defended him, something illustrated in his interview. I want a good resolution for him, one that doesn't involve dying and/or turning into a grumpypants second lead cause he's better than that! I was so nervous for him confronting MJG, I know he's a former police officer, but watching him take off his glasses, I was just thinking, "Don't try to be a hero! Call for back up!"

-Thank goodness that Su-ha can see right through her denial now, it makes it hurt a whole lot less. But at the same time, it is harder for him now, thinking that he has this secret that would legitimately give her reason to push him away. I have to agree with GF this time that he is underestimating her, but if she starts pushing and he can't get a good read on her, he may take it the wrong way. Let's not have this make up the extension though...two extra episodes=more cute times together. My math cannot be flawed!

Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

2. If Hwang was physically abusing his wife like the guy in I Miss you, then I understand. If it's just debts, then I say that anyone in Hwang's shoes would kill her.

1. I know, right? How is erasing yourself easier than getting a divorce and moving house?!
2. You never have the right to kill anybody at all. He has a right to be angry, confused and hurt, but not to murder.
3. I assume it would have to be proven first she never died, then they'd cancel the conviction or whatever the legal term for that is, then charge for attempted murder. If she has no fingerprints they'd need to do a DNA test matching the living woman's DNA against the DNA of the one supposedly dead. Nearly 30 years later. So that's the difficult part.

I mean, anyone in Hwang's shoes should be so angry at having been deliberately set up and sent to prison for 26 years for sth they haven't done, for having been made to waste their life, that their rage would take over, and would want to kill her. Very different from saying that he has "a right" to kill her.

For some reason, my husband thinks I can, or should be able to read his mind. I could really use this ability as it would prevent so many arguments.

Su-haa <3!! Words cannot describe how much I love him! And I didn't realize how much I had missed his old mind-reading self till he was back and I could see the difference in his attitude and behaviour.. Not that Amnesia Puppy wasn't cute though, but Mind-Reading Protector wins hands down!

And how cute was the scene where he realizes she likes him? Shock and disbelief.. It was like all his dreams came true, but bittersweet at the same time because he couldn't acknowledge her feelings..

And the chemistry that this couple share continues to make me squee in every scene they are together.. It's just so natural and perfect!

Good episode, again. A bit of funny, a ton of cute and just enough tension and angst to ground the story. All the characters are advancing on their road: I'm starting to see the horizon.
On a shallow note, can I just say "shoulders and biceps"? Someone's becoming a man at light speed and our heroine better notice it or I'll be angry. I'm so glad that SH could discover what HS really feels about him. If her denial keeps going on, it's going to be acrobatic...
I'm with those who don't find the mind reading ability creepy in that story, between those 2 persons. I'm almost sure she won't stay shocked for long after his confession and she will understand why he hid the facts about his recovery. In his shoes, I would have done the same.

Oh dear... I hope not. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. I think this series has already shown us how ridiculous man's sense of justice can get. Everything can be so subjective and arbitrary when we decide what justice is and how it should be meted out... I am getting a wee bit wary how show is going to tie up the MJK and SH's dad's story. Please let it not be something ridiculously dramatic and spoil the show for me.

I forgot to mention that I dislike Hwang Dal-joong's wife (ex-wife?) and what she did? Couldn't she just divorce or separate from her husband? Go abroad with her daughter or put her in an orphanage/put her up for adoption if she couldn't afford to raise her up? Whatever happened to 'for better or worse, ..richer or poorer, etc..'? Cutting up her hand and framing her husband for murder was a bit too much, right? I would've approved if there was domestic violence in the relationship (by all means escape away!), but just because of the reasons she mentioned? You need therapy, lady!

It's the debts, if you missed it. In Korea, technically they can't chase you for the debts others incurred, but in some cases, the gangsters don't really care if you're divorced or not... so they'll chase you anyway to get the money however they can.

when i heard her argument of what she did, she actually sounded logical yet irrational to me.

1. she thinks putting her husband in jail was better for him than living in a big debt. (heh, like she's still love him dearly)

2. she love her child much that she would rather have her living well though didn't know her biological parents. (like what every mother wish)

3. she want to disappear and born as a new man, new ID, new life. yet she did this sickly.

sounded much like excuse, but hey, it somehow logical in a weird way. she possibly has a mental disorder.

There's just too much injustice here however logical her arguments were. I still thought it was not enough to put an innocent man behind bars for 26(!) years.

1) So I was a bit bored this episode. I'm actually glad that Min Joongook is back and as creepy as ever because you can't be bored with him killing anything that moves. By the way, could he be any more conspicuous in his stalking outfit? Or do fishermen stroll the streets of Seoul in full gear on a regular basis?

2) I will cut someone if they successfully defend Daljoong with Double Jeopardy. That stupid movie has made a fool of many otherwise intelligent people. Just so you know, folks, it doesn't work the way you think it works. If someone is killed on January 1st, 2000 and you are convicted and serve your time then find out that they are not really dead so you kill them on January 1st, 2013, those are TWO SEPARATE CRIMES. You will be tried and convicted for the second murder just as you were for the first. I once sat through a civics class where a bunch of pretentious 18-year-olds had the gall to argue this point with our trained lawyer professor because they had seen the Double Jeopardy movie and thought that meant the were experts.

3) Birth Secrets are stupid but I wouldn't mind finding out that Oska is Suha's hyung. They there would be no excuse for them not to have an epic bromance.

4)I am confused about one thing in this Daljoong Case. Did he kill the wife or just maim her in the hospital? I don't know if it's the dialogue or the translations but it's a bit ambiguous.

That is all. Like I said... I was kind of bored this episode. It was a necessary ep, to be sure but there were no surprises. Just confirming everything we knew all along but was never stated outright: Do Yeon is Daljoong's daughter, Daljoong got royally screwed (though it's worse than I thought. I didn't realize the lady did it to herself. How is permanent dis-figuration a better solution than divorce), Min Joongook is scary and cray-cray, Suha is adorable, Lawyer Oska is equally adorable in a Grown Man kind of way, Pretty the Paralegal is pretty.

Z, you are right on some aspects, but not all. As any lawyer can tell you, this rule of law applies on a case-by-case basis. The general rule of thumb in many countries is: Double Jeopardy forbids a defendant from being tried again on the same (or similar) charges following a legitimate acquittal or conviction. The key word here is that the trial had to have ended either with a conviction or acquittal (if the trial is ongoing, as it is known to stretch for several years, then your scenario of the defendant killing the supposed victim a few years later can be tried as two separate crimes).

In S. Korea: Article 13 of the South Korean constitution provides that no citizen shall be placed in double jeopardy.

The exception to the rule in the US is that even after the trial concludes, the government can appeal in these situations: pre-trial motion to dismiss or other non-merits dismissal, or a directed verdict after a jury conviction, nor does it prevent the trial judge from entertaining a motion for reconsideration of a directed verdict, if the jurisdiction has so provided by rule or statute. Nor does it prevent the government from retrying the defendant after an appellate reversal other than for sufficiency, including habeas corpus, or "thirteenth juror" appellate reversals notwithstanding sufficiency on the principle that jeopardy has not "terminated." There may also be an exception for judicial bribery, but not jury bribery.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah I'm pretty sure I said the exact same thing without the lawyerese and gobbledygook. I'm no lawyer so I wont go into any finer intricacies that I'm not privy to. My only real point is that, the fact that you were wrongly convicted of killing someone in the past does not mean you can kill them in the future without impunity. The most you can hope for is that your original conviction will be overturned. You can and will still be prosecuted and most likely convicted in the second "murder." So Double Jeopardy does not apply in Dal Joong's case and I stand by my assertion that I will cut someone if they use that to get him off.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

As a lawyer, I can tell you that Dal Joong will definitely be able to incite Double Jeopardy if he can prove that the person he stabbed was the very person that he went to prison for in the first place (which they have a hard time proving without the daughter's DNA at this point).

There was a final conviction and he rotted for 26 years in prison. Even Korea has this law in place. Now there are exceptions to the rule that I specifically cited above, and if his case does not fall under these exceptions, then he can prevail using Double Jeopardy as his defense.

Required fields are marked *

Like I said, I'm no lawyer, but I know enough to know that Double Jeopardy applies to the same offense, committed at the same time and place. The fact that Daljoong is accused to killing the same person has no bearing on it because the fact that the crimes occurred 26 years apart (and not to mention in completely different locations with different methods and weapons) means that they are not the same offense. The only thing that proving her identity does is give him a chance to get his original conviction overturned.

The wording of the 5th Ammendment alone (of course each country but I'm gonna go ahead and extrapolate) specifies that "[N]or shall any person be subject for the SAME OFFENSE to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb" In this case, it's not the same offense.

Ah me, pretentious 18 year olds! I've met a few. Heck, I probably was one back in the day.

It would be sooooo good if two of the three leads were related. Cause I'm a wuss for the k-drama j-drama created/melded family. And I want all three together. I guess Deo Yeon could be included as well.

I'll slightly disagree with the idea that this episode was boring. Characters discovering what we already know is a very vital and time-honored part of suspenseful storytelling. True, we the reader/viewer don't discover anything new. Especially if we understand the characters. We knew the secret, we know how they will probably respond to this secret we have known for ages. But there is the identifying with and suffering with the tension and emotion of the character as he pushes through the fear to tell what we already know and the imagining and experiencing of the character receiving this news.

In incidents like these, it's not about our mind but about us losing ourselves to become like the character. It's a kind of forgetting about ourselves and what we know...and being wholly swallowed up by the emotions of the characters.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I understand why this episode was necessary. The characters are not privy to the secrets the way we are so it all had to come out. Still, it's a little hard on the viewer who is sitting there waiting for something new to happen. Especially when the drama is treating it like it's a big surprise for us too. The only unexpected turn was Min Joongook seeking out Lawyer Oska and NOT killing him (yet, who really knows with that guy). I'm intrigued about what he has to tell him, though I'm pretty sure it's another secret that we already know (Suha's father being behind it all).

Tonight's episode will probably be more entertaining because we get to see everyone's reactions to all the revelations.

I was smh at Hye Sung the entire episode. How could she not have known Su Ha was back? The sudden banmal, straightforward way of speaking, observant, sharp behavior were dead giveaways. A complete 180 from amnesiac Su Ha. Kudos to Lee Jong Suk’s superb acting range. I can’t blame Kwan Woo for not noticing (even though Su Ha was clearly antagonistic towards him) because he and Su Ha were never close, but c’mon Hye Sung, you used to live with him, and it takes him admitting it himself before you even realize it?

It seems as if Min Joon Gook lost his shrewdness with his hand. It’s so not like him to be caught on a CCTV in broad daylight, and stand thirty feet away from his target again in broad daylight, then wield a wooden plank in a brightly-lit spot in an open area. But Kwan Woo, why didn’t you call 119 after texting Hye Sung?

When the first three minutes of this episode was a refresher of the ending scene from the last episode, I assumed it must be due to the two-episode extension and Show having to fill the extra time. I pray we won’t have to watch the same flashbacks umpteen times.

Thanks for the recap, girlfriday!

Totally agree with you on all three points. How could Hyesung not see that the Deer in the Headlights look was gone from his eyes. I wish he had tried a little harder to hide the truth from her so I wouldn't have to scream "Are you stupid, woman?" at her through my computer screen.

And yeah, Jookgook's actions this episode were totally out of character. I can't believe this but I was shaking my head at him thinking "You're better than this, dude" through the whole episode.

I think HS was doubly in denial: About herself and about him. You can't force someone who doesn't want to see the truth even if they are stepping on it. I thought of that, too but I'm not really buying it. Because when things did ping her radar she did not hesitate to question him about it (switch to banmal, dog food comment, Doyeon story). I would say a better excuse is her faith and trust in him. It never crosses her mind that he would not tell her about regaining his memories. That I can understand and I think that's really what's at play here more than denial.

I'm just kind of disappointed that more clues didn't ping her radar. He was a completely different person in speech, demeanor, attitude that I would have been more suspicious from the get-go, even if I ultimately chose to believe his explanations.

I don't think Hye-sung was obtuse or unobservent, I think she just truly believed Su-ah would tell her as soon as his memories returned. She trusts him implicitly. That was my interpretation, anyway!

As for Min Joon-gook, I thought perhaps he was intentionally making himself visible. He really seems to enjoy terrorizing his victims as much as he likes killing them.

About Min Joon-gook, yeah I also thought he was letting himself be seen on purpose. I mean, he hid for an entire year and no one heard a word from him. He's definitely capable of avoiding the CCTV. He could have just bought a disposable phone instead of choosing to use the phone booths. Also, didn't know they still had so many working phone booths in South Korea. I have to really search for them...

You see what you want to see. You only realize that people were lying to you in hindsight. Also, as #32.2 mentioned, she trusts him so she really doesn't have any reason to doubt what he says or be suspicious. Aren't people more blind when in a relationship? People outside see things much clearer. And we're the viewers so of course, it's obvious to us. I'm buying that she didn't notice the (little imo) changes in Su-ha.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think she saw several times..and she asked him a couple of times. Banmal? Dog-food? So it's not really about Hye-Sung not noticing; it's more about her believing he would NOT lie to her. "Because he would not lie to me, he HAS NOT lied to me." So she was deluding herself and ignoring the signs because she felt he would not delude her. But she definitely noticed.

She might even believe it's his subconscious and proof that his memories are slowing coming back - even if they are not consciously back yet. So him being easier with her = "Soo Ha is starting to heal", not "Soo ha is lying"

Required fields are marked *

I was surprised by how happy I was that his mind-reading ability returned, but I think that's part of what makes this couple so endearing. No matter what Hye-sung says, Su-ha can read right through her lies. I just secretly hope that maybe by the end of the series, he'll lose that ability but by then it won't matter; they'll be able to read each other equally.

I really hope Attorney Oska isn't harmed by Min Joon-gook! It looks like he just wants to make a point by telling him something, but what? *speculation mode*

What could he possibly have to tell him? That Su-ha's father is responsible for everything that's happened? That's not anything worth hunting him down over, since it still doesn't excuse taking the law into your own hands and killing at least two people and attempting to kill even more! I'm curious as to what this big reveal will be, if it will be another MJG lie, or if it will be anything at all.

Lee Jae-suk is all kinds of awesome. Loved how adoring he played Su-ha to Hye-sung, then loved how torn he was over whether or not to reveal the truth to Hye-sung, for fear she'll push him away. But in the end, he knows he needs to be truthful with her, and also, he knows that he has information that she desperately needs to help out Hwang Dal-joong's case.

Oh, and one last thing: Su-ha's purchase of the hiking boots for Cha. LOL! I guess this is where cultural differences stand out, because getting the most expensive item and purposely leaving the price tag on was so tacky -- unless his point was that it was not a gift from the heart, but just a form of payment in an expensive gift that Cha would not refuse. Still, it was funny to me.

I agree, it seems like MJG will reveal the origins of his murderous serial killing spree to Lawyer Cha. MJG seems like he has upped his ante...he is now bolder, less afraid of getting caught, so this means his grasp of the situation is slipping...he's becoming careless and these probably are to be his final desperate moves.

Maybe his goal is to plant a seed of doubt in Lawyer Cha's mind regarding SH. There's nothing like internal strife destroying concerted efforts ya know...well that is if he doesn't get permanently maimed first by MJG.

GF said it well, SH made the right choice by not killing him...MJG never once considered that path and that niggled. SH is his main nemesis.

Soo Ha's puppy faces are THE BEST. The bus stop kiss? I rewound 3 times. too much cute. too much.

I was actually pretty surprised about Do Hyoen's parentage. Pretty good twist for me. I thought Daddy's issue was just that he KNEW the wife was alive and convicted anyway, not that he'd taken in her daughter.

BUT it begs the question. How did MJG get the idea for the hand gambit if the jail-mate didn't know about the original plot? I mean...MJG cuts off his hand to pretend he's dead and send SH to prison based on hearing the jail-mate's story but...the jail-mate never knew that was the real story until just now. Am i missing something?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I think MJG got the idea because his jail mate was convicted on the basis of a hand that was found, with the wife's body never having been found.

Neither HJD nor MJG knew that the wife was actually still alive, MJG just came up with a crazy plan of his own.

Of course, it could be that there is deeper connection somewhere, i.e. that MJG was the man the HJD's wife was having affair with. Not sure how that would fit, given that MJG at some point talked about this own wife and that Suha's father 'killed' her (maybe MJG was calling HJD's wife his 'wife' without being married to her, but just being the woman he was having affair with?). Anyhow, if he was having an affair with HJD's wife, he would have known about the whole hand scenario...

It could even be more complicated: maybe Suha's father is connected to all that somehow... maybe he was going to expose the affair? Or maybe he was a debt collector that 'forced' the wife to 'kill' herself (by causing her all the stress about the debts)?

I'm spinning crazy scenarios here and I'm not really sure they would work (or if I would want them to work because it would all be just a bit too much). There are also gaps in terms of what happened in between the time of the first fake hand murder (26 years ago) and the death of Suha's dad (10 years ago). Maybe it took MJG 16 years to hunt Suha's dad down and get his revenge on depriving him of the woman?

Okay, that probably made no sense...

But weren't we supposed to spot the birth secret a mile away? I thought this was kind of a non-birth secret birth secret... because we --the audience-- were told about it pretty clearly way back when. And Lawyer Shin knew. I must admit my wednesday afternoons are getting slightly consumed by this drama and after watching it, I keep refreshing this site to read the recap and the comments. LJS continues to be the cutest thing on television. I kind a thought his shoulders were too broad for his face and his arms too long and hands too large but in the tank top today, I noticed he had nice arms too. Perhaps he is becoming a man real quick. How can he go from puppy eyes to looking like that today, I have no idea. But, however he or director or writer did that, it's all good.

Also, because not every noona looks frazzled and ahjumma-like, okay? There are gorgeous noonas out there too.

IHYV doesn't irk me at all in that department, surprisingly, because everything is just perfect about the characters and the relationship they have. I appreciate that hye sung is a classy, fierce albeit petty gal and that lee jong suk has been made into a puppy-protector. I don't have a problem with noona-romances per se (or a biggish age gap) but it's just they way they usually play out in dramas: super-gorgeous, incredibly superior and usually rich young guy who only matches with a hottie of his own age falls in love with dowdy, poor, incapable and often stupid/naive ahjumma who no one in their right mind would love because of course anyone over a certain age is a) totally undeserving of love and unlovable b) incapable in all departments, from how they dress to their job to what not....

I'm thinking along the lines of Oh! My Lady here...

I understand what you mean. On the one hand, I see it as a writer's challenge to society's habit of judging people. By tipping the normal mode of putting gorgeous person with gorgeous person and turning the idea on its head, it makes folks step back and say, "Am I judging who can love who?" So I see it as a good thing. From a personal standpoint, when I was younger..I was super-cute but I got fat from being sick and from having kids. But my husband is still really gorgeous looking. So when we appear together -- really gorgeous slender looking fiftyish white guy and overweight fiftyish black woman-- we do surprise folks. I even had someone say to a friend, "Why is a guy like that with a woman like that?"

But it would be good to see a classy gorgeous ahjumma with a classy young hottie. And really good to see a classy gorgeous ahjumma with a frumpy hottie (although there are some who might say "she has the frumpy guy because that's all she can get.)

I don't even feel the "hot young guy / frumpy poor ahjumma" actually challenges people's perceptions, since it often plays out with a sort of emphasis on "oh, she's really lucky she got that guy". In some dramas, the guy needs the woman more so than she needs him in the end, but it usually involves 3/4 of the episodes of rubbing it down our throat that he's SO AMAZING and she's SO INFERIOR and NOT WORTH HIM.

And my problem is also it's always the same.

You just about never get the dumpy, poor, old guy that is inferior (and feels inferior himself) with the rich, beautiful younger girl that is (and feels) superior....

The other problem I have is that the ahjummas they cast are said to be "old" and "ugly", but are they ever? They are still super skinny and beautiful, but they just put them in terrible clothes and mess with their hair, and make them wear glasses or something. But you can still see that they are actually beautiful women. (Actually, they don't do that with just ahjummas, with young, poor heroines as well.)

I Do, I Do was a bit of an exception though.

P.S. I'm sure you and your husband are perfectly matched and that he could be with no better woman!

You make me think of Hugh Jackman though.... so sad when people get dismissive of his wife when it's so obvious they are perfect for each other and have a much better relationship than 99% of Hollywood!

Yes, alua.
What irks me most is that they really go to town with that concept of being an older woman by dressing down a pretty woman by giving her messy hair with sweats or something -- it becomes an overused k-drama trope.
There's nothing wrong with it when i see it in the real world, (Bless you and your husband carole!) but k-dramaland tends to milk that concept to the point where it's tiring and inaccurate -- esp when they ask the audience to suspend alot of belief with the heroine's appearances.
Yeah i was thinking of Oh! My lady while writing that post but i'll give I Do I Do brownie points since the female lead actually looked like a modern noona (she was a fashion designer, after all).

Sons of Sol Pharmacy might be an exception to alua's point about never seeing the reverse in dramas. You had an old "frumpy" (what's the male equivalent of frumpy?) local Ahjusshi pharmacist with a young successful female lawyer. It's not the exact equivalent of your typical Noona relationship because I think they were pretty evenly match socially (in that he wasn't "beneath" her in any way). But generally when you have Older Guy/Younger Woman it's Cheabol Heir and Candy Girl so at least it was something a little different.

Alua!
LOL!!! Totally agree with you there.

Maybe in a j-drama, girl-who-deserves-to-get-love would really be allowed to be kinda ugly. But even then...it's rare.

Yeah, hubby and i are perfect for each other. I just have to lose weight...or he should gain some. A paunch or beer belly would be good.

I'm also glad that unlike so many other dramas where the secret of the hero/heroine gets out by another character, the hero steps up and admits the truth. Props for that show. I love this show soooo much!!! So show please don't go jumping on any trains to crazy ville. I know its tempting with the two episode extension; but don't cave to peer pressure, and just say no.

I really thought this episode was well done. The pacing, the plotting, etc.

I also don't mind the court room cases since they often relate to the characters and character development. For example, HS's passion towards the client is a character arc for her. KW's growth is also shown in the court room as well.

We needed that one courtroom case to anchor the fact that she was back to fighting for the defendant. (pigo--if you haven't picked this Korean word by now....) and that her tactics had changed thanks to KW. Just saying it *cough* Cyrano drama *cough* doesn't make it true, so the script writer went out of her way to show it was true and it doesn't have to be any relation to HS for her to fight hard. It also shows by proxy that SH keeps her compass on the right path. Without him her compass spun. That's simply good writing. And keeping it short and to the point was good.

DY would be an empty character without the courtroom scenes. You'd only get to see one side of her. You get to see someone capable, despite her reservations sometimes prosecuting and her dedication to professionalism that sometimes HS lacks and needs.

But then I watch a lot of police procedurals, and court room dramas too... plus I don't mind finding out the differences in Korean law and different places.

I have a feeling there will be more court room cases, since the whole drama promised court room cases, "Less than 1% chance of being proven innocent." Which is a spin from Get Karl! Oh Soo Jeong!, which was a previous drama of the same writer, and obviously she wanted to figure out how a lawyer operates, etc rather than focus 100% on the romance (See Get Karl! Oh Soo Jeong for that treatment) =P You can learn a lot from a writer's catalog.

So, I'm guessing more squeezed in court cases for the 2 episode gap, but related to characterization. *praying* Plus more cute.

I agree with the points in your comment.

Like you, I was okay with the pace and the courtroom scene. I didn't feel it was unduly long or dragged out. We need to see the growth of our characters and that scene had me thinking, "okay, for once, Hye-sung is (shown) handling a case (or as you put it, fighting for her defendant) without the help of Su-ha or having him in the periphery." I really liked that.

So true. This is a really good writer. And often the seemingly boring parts of a drama or a book hold very important elements for the story. Besides...hellooo!!! She has a job! I love Shark a lot but seriously, the only person doing her job in that drama is the Prosecutor. Yi-Soo has a job..supposedly...but what does he do? So far, I've seen him sign one piece of paper and attend a function. I really hate love stories that totally present a love that exists outside of working characters.

Right?! Same with high school dramas - I like that they pointed out that Soo Ha was cutting class constantly. I taught in Asia, and ever time I watch a HighS drama, I'm like...."were do you get all this free time????"

I agree with this as well. The courtroom scenes aren't always my favorite but they play an important part in illustrating the development of these characters, and I appreciate a drama that still cares about that. Also, it's keeping with the theme of the show, where we see defendants that in one way or another are ignored or not heard and need a voice. This show is great for being able to balance these themes along with all the other elements like romance and suspense.

1. that back hug. TOTALLY made me flutter. and i don't flutter all that easily, having become immune to all the romantic gestures in dramas (and thus ruining me for real life). this boy is gonna become big. he better. seriously.

2. the fan incident in the courtroom cracked me up SO HARD. i applauded the writer for having thought of it. it's just pure genius. it reminded me of those advertising giant balloon-people things they have on the side of the road sometimes, whatever they're called?

3. i groaned when it became apparent kwan-woo was going to confront MJG, although the next second i did remember he used to be a cop. but when he took off his glasses?! it's obvious they have no lenses, but in the story, i'm thinking he actually NEEDS them?? sigh. kwan-woo, you dear sweet almost-sometimes-hopeless man.

4. kwan-woo's interview was a great moment for him, and for us to see, his growth. it was kind of bittersweet, too, not unlike how children eventually lose their innocence and become attuned to reality.

5. my one gripe about the show—that awful chilling music that sort of comes off corny whenever MJG or something related happens. i wish it was more subtle!

NO WRIST GRAB! He actually takes her by the hand! I know some people found this episode slower but personally I really liked this episode. So much cute :)

In regards to HS not noticing SH being different, I think it's her trust in him that causes her brain to glaze over minor differences...but the major differences are a bit too glaring for her brain to ignore. Plus she's not the most observant person and half the time she's musing over some problem or the other so I don't think it's that strange. I'd probably not notice too (not a good thing! but yeah I'm kinda...poor in my awareness/observation skills :P)

Taking her by the hand means he gets the girl....

If I'm not wrong, I think Oska wrist-grabbed HS in one of the earlier episodes...

and it's kind of like when when Oska started to piggy-back HS home, but SH took over and was the one who actually got her home.

Yeah, I'm just trying to find all the signs and signals possible to reassure myself tht HS and SH will end up together. I worry, because it's still only ep 13 and they are so close already! It feels like they could take that away in a second!

Lol I totally get ya. I'm been doing the same thing, crosschecking everything KW/SH do with my mighty love triangle handbook. And seeing so much cute in episode 13? It terrifies me for the OTP. Suha/Hye-sung better be endgame or I feel I'm gonna be the one with the heartbreak.
