[Drama-induced Shopping] K-drama winter wardrobes when it’s always summer here

By Andy

If there is one thing K-dramas have influenced me to change (or rather, improve), it would, without a doubt, be my sense of style or lack thereof. My binge-watching epidemic began with Playful Kiss. I now look back with rage and shake my head at my tween-ness, and I kid you not, but I fell in love with Seung-jo’s haircut. I don’t know whether it was the early 2010s effect, or my nonexistent emo personality shining through, but I thought it would be great to show up to school with short hair and a side fringe that completely covered an eye, leaving me partially blind. I cannot live down the cringe, and yes, the haircut was pretty expensive (compared to the blunt one that was super trendy at the time).

What was I thinking?

Playful Kiss

As the years passed by and I managed to live out my embarrassment and family complaints, I finally started picking up (and drooling) on the amazing wardrobes within K-dramas. (I guess the extra scrutiny of teen fashion piled up). I couldn’t comprehend how Chun Song-yi positively stunned me with her exquisitely styled sequin-collared, orange-red sweater in You From Another Star and I don’t think I ever will. (No wonder she has fashion blogs dedicated to her “couture-ness”).

I guess that’s where my fascination with winter clothes and formal wear began. While all of my friends were cramming to buy the latest Korean skincare products, I would ogle over all the different ways Doo-rim (Bride of the Century) managed to style the same cream coat. How Soo-ji (Because This Life Is Our First) made black on black turtlenecks so damn gorgeous. Kim Bom from Sweden Laundry and Bok-ju from Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju looked adorably cute in their oversized sweaters and beanies. Jin-sung, (My Unfortunate Boyfriend) was a modern-day winter princess in her supposedly “counter-fit,” luxuriously red faux fur coat. I was craving to buy a winter coat, one I could style with scarves and mittens and beanies. But I couldn’t, and it wasn’t because I was short on cash (though seriously, coats are expensive).

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju

I couldn’t buy said coats because it’s always summer where I live. And when I mean always, I mean like 80 percent of the year. Winter, as compared to Korea, is a joke, because first, it doesn’t snow (so no point in buttoning up for the cold), but it also hardly ever rains and is constantly humid. Thus, I withheld my coat cravings. That is, until Go Hye-ran from Misty sauntered along in her fiercely hot red stilettos. She manages to walk a runway every single scene. Not only did she put my basic wardrobe to shame, but she spurred a fascination with formal wear. I ended up buying not one coat, but two. I constantly rationalize the hefty price tag by reminding myself (and my mom) that in a few months I’ll be needing it in university, to survive the bitter cold. I don’t regret it because the maroon and blue are so epically gorgeous. *proceeds to drool*

Misty

Formal wear is a whole other world. I was always a dress and comfy jeans kinda gal and so seeing Lee Yuri (Father Is Strange) or Go Hye-ran being a badass onscreen, commanding attention and prosecuting the bad guys with their sheer intelligence and pantsuits, was like a fashion epiphany. Never one to experiment with style (except, of course the above-mentioned haircut), I finally expanded my extensive T-shirt and denim collection with countless bow-tied blouses, cuffed and collared shirts, and both tapered and flared trousers.

I admit though, while purchasing them (again under Mom’s disapproving glances), I always had a sneaking suspicion I would end up looking like an ajumma instead of a trendy teen. The doubts (along with Mom’s sighs) were put to rest after I managed to (or at least tried to) work the outfits during my design internship. I mean, the “best dressed” recognition says something right?

Father Is Strange

Finally, I would like to shower some appreciation on the fantastic drama shoes. Go Hye-ran (whose stilettos were center stage, not that I’m complaining) and Lee Yo-won (Buam-dong Revenge Club) were the style queens who took the cake with their classy, refined shoe game. But I was always a sneakers fanatic, so while I loved their clackity-clacks, I was not spurred on to make pricey shoe purchases (yet?).

Buam-dong Revenge Club

It was Jung So-min’s (Because This Life Is Our First) gorgeous boots of every shade — white, tan, and black — that made my heartbeat quicken. It was a case of drama-induced shopping at its finest. After the drama finished airing, I went shopping and ended up with not one, but two pairs of suede ankle boots (cue Mom’s eye-rolls) that I wear to every party occasion. What am I doing with my life and wallet (actually, more like Mom’s wallet)?

I don’t see it stopping anytime soon though. I guess a permanent fixture will be me, henceforth, rationalizing all of my K-drama clothing sprees as a must for a university wardrobe.

Thanks for your story, @Andy! I can definitely relate, as where I live, I get 3 days of coat weather a year. And although I had a love of coats before my K-drama watching began, they definitely inspired me to wear them more often.

Your examples are so great, too. I always loved seeing Bok Joo padding around like a lil’ penguin in her gorgeous blue coat, and oH! The pantsuits and just. any of the outfits in Misty. Simply divine. Would definitely make me want to wear high heels if I didn’t trip and die every time I put them on. 😂

This is so relatable too 😂 and the sole reason I gravitate more towards boots. I need all the support I can get.

Bok Joo manages to make everything look so comfy and warm. She's just so cuddly!

You will certainly be the cutest student at your university, Andy! (cue mom’s exaltation)

Before then, I advise that you secretly get your mom to watch (more) dramas with you. It will be a wonderful bonding experience, with the possible added benefit of greatly loosing up her purse string for both of you to look fabulous despite the status of the weather condition.

Cheers to owning the uni campus like a boss, Go Hye-ran style!

I've tried but she prefers intense makjangs with multiple birth secrets and high levels of angst. My blood pressure usually can't take all the stress. I put it down to creative differences. 😂

I showed this article to my mom and she couldn't believe I actually featured her and that her reactions were comedy gold.

I am a sneaker fanatic (hard not to be when I tower 0.5-1 head over most of my friends) but LYW's GORGEOUS as heck classy outfits in Buamdong made me wish so desperately that I wore heels. In fact, I agree with all the cute outfits you mentioned here...

Though over the years I did realize I don't look half as good as any of these actresses, and have since made a conscious attempt to stop myself from any attempts to buy similar clothes.

Also... the place where I live in? Hah, it's 100% summer all year round. Yup, not just 80%, 100%. Our temperatures average 30 degrees on a daily basis, and I for one dislike to be hot and sweaty. This means that while my classmates are shivering in their thick cardigans in our air-conditioned classrooms, I am braving it out in a thin camisole. (Also, partly practical because cardigans/jackets are heavy and can't be worn outside of the classroom in the hot weather, and I have enough things to carry in uni.)

Sigh, if only. I love fashion so much.

100% summer the whole year? Sounds like Venezuela!!! 😂😂😂😂
I have had that for more than 20 years. Now I live where is cold almost the whole year (Germany), but I only have one winter coat I bought when I arrived four years ago, and it is not a fancy coat😂😂😂😂
Can you believe a winter coat costs over a hundred dollars here? 😑

Winter coats are always expensive! I spent 5 months in USA and Canada and had to get one, but the pretty ones were all beyond my budget.

I live near the equator, so summer all year round! Been living in summer for > 20 years too. I daresay, at least summer is a bit more convenient than winter!

I think it's a universal thing. 😂 I suffer the same fate while trying out their summery style. Never can pull off shorts the way they rock them. Comfy winter coats it is.

Also... the place where I live in? Hah, it's 100% summer all year round.

My jaw has officially dropped. How??

And I bet you're rocking your camisoles if you can survive in that with AC on. That's respect! 🙌

We always joke that even though we're sitting at the same table next to each other, we look like we're experiencing 2 different seasons because they're wearing denim jackets/knit cardigans while I'm in a sleeveless top, LOL.

I stay in a country that's veryyyy near the equator, and we don't have any seasons at all. So summer all year round for us, though we do have a monsoon (rainy) season. It doesn't get any colder though hahaha.

Our idea of winter here is apparently 22 degrees. And yes, I mean in Celsius! We had a 'cold snap' end of last year and I heard one of the most ridiculous thing on radio - some actually bought thermals!

I like to wear as little clothes as possible so my admiration for Kdrama fashion with all those gorgeous winter and formal wear stays firmly in drama watching. The only time it hits me is when I travel overseas in winter. Still, I find it hard to justify spending heaps if I want to look like Go Hye Ran instead of a Korean ahjumma who sells fish in the market. Thank god for retailers like Uniqlo which offers the most decent looking coats at very reasonable prices. I don't think I am big sized but I still look like a whale in winterwear. I figure Kim Nam Joo must be size minus 4. It's impossible to look so svelte in coats!

You and I seem to live in the same part of the world. ^^; My winter is the same - but it does tend to go down to about 18 degrees for a couple of weeks near the end of December.

I agree about size minus 4. Is it because I don't understand winter clothing and fashion? I look about 10 times bigger and completely like a poor country bumpkin when I travel to places that actually have winter.

Same part maybe but definitely different latitude. If we hit 18 degrees here, I'm sure we'll declare it Ice Age is nigh!

Agree with the country bumpkin thing. This said, as much I can't stand the heat and humidity of home, I do appreciate things like single layer clothes. I find this peeling off layers and then putting them back on a very laborious exercise.

It is interesting.
Although I also pay attention to the way these actresses dress, the shoes they wear, their hair looks and sometimes even tiny things the camera holds in view for some seconds every time on, like jewelry or make up... come on, I am a woman too, and not totally an ajuma, I don't look bad and I like to be creative with my outfit once in a while.... still, I have never, not even once, thought of buying anything similar to what they show us in dramaworld. It is like, for me that is another dimension.
Also I am so focus on the story and reading the subs, I never have enough time to look more of these things, and I forget them also pretty quick.
I will remember the plots of the dramas I like, the atmosphere, the feelings, the acting, some dialogs and reflextions I made while watching, and many times also the music. But I never remember clothing, make up, accessories or whatever PPL... LOL
Such a bad candidate for shopping Korean merchandise!!!!! 😂

As for being Ra Mi-ran, pretty sure you could work wear these things and make it work for you. 'Sides beautiful hair can be easily achieved through styling :)

Ha ha... never mind. People "normal-looking" like us have to cultivate the inner beauty. 😂😂😂😂
But it is a good deal because this is what it will last, and at the end it is what other will like the most throughout time.
I have been more vain in my twenties, because I was insecure and being an intellectual is only appealing in some dramas! 🙄
But now I am not that intellectual anymore, not much time for books when you have Korean dramas, right? And I also don't have much time to look only very pretty in the outside when the weather sucks almost all the time anyways 😂😭😂
I rather love to be comfortable, and breath deep and think about the inner beauty. Ha ha 😁
But hey! Skin care products are always welcome. We can forget the make up, but never a good moisturizer.

I barely catch PPL too with all the fast subs (unless it's thrown into my face like Subway in Goblin). 😂

But when they have lingering shots on the actresses sauntering down the corridor/sidewalk/street I can't help but admire their fashion sense. I don't get how some times their dirt poor (working multiple jobs) but their wardrobes are queen style. Where can I sign up?

Haha, I'm like you. It's a whole other dimension. Plus I don't see the need to spend a lot on clothes. I'm lazy.

There are only rare dramas where I think to myself 'wow, that looks cool, wish I were cool too'. Mainly: Doctors (maybe I was too bored so I noticed the clothes) and Buamdong Revenge Club. Oh, and sageuks. All that shiny silk and beautiful colours.

Good luck at university.

I'm sure the haircut didn't look that bad, it is pretty cute.
My first k drama had a lead with distinctive hair too and laugh. Oh my god the laugh. It was Fated to Love You.
As much as Jang Hyuk's hair fascinated me I luckily didn't emulate. His whole look was so different from what I was used to seeing men wear on screen. At the time I just thought it was that show's unique styling.

Ah the coat envy is universal it seems! I am sure you will be the best dressed in university! I live on the 'sunny side' of Australia and will be lucky if i can find 5 coat days. But Kdrama's have really made me aware of my skin and how dull and dry it looks compared to the gorgeous ladies we see on tv. I am greatly googling Korean products each day and my fb timeline is filled with sponsored Korean beauty products!!! I guess I am waiting to take the plunge and buy some beauty goo's finally!

Guy fashions on K-dramas are often ridiculous. But when a character does have a good look going on its usually something that I would look absurd in if I tried to wear. I was perhaps thin enough to wear a sleek 'skinny suit' my last year on college... for a couple months... maybe

Ah but you see @Andy those aren't silly purchases.

Buying Lee Yuri outfits is just getting ready for when you need that extra bit of confidence. Dress like her and you'll feel good going into any presentation that you might have to do, or when you at some point have to go for a job interview.

Those clothes are just the female version of armour - wearing them will get you mentally prepared for arguments and discussions.

So just tell your mum you're not spending silly money - you're investing in your future! (well, she might not buy that argument but it's worth a try ;-) )

Lee Yuri is my aspiration level for being an ultimate queen! She killed every scene, oozing with self-confidence and determination. Her style is definitely battle armour but I'm not sure about being mentally prepared for discussions. ^_^ Nerves are so hard to control...

But I don't let her sit & watch with me because of sudden unexpected shower scenes & kisses & well....its awkward to watch all that with her 😛
But I do know how much she lives clothes so if I ever see characters wearing something that she likes, I immediately show it to her.
For example this:

And she went "oooh its such a pretty cardigan! 😍 why don't they have such clothes at our shops?"

Sorry for flooding your notifs lol

It's completely cool. ^^; My notifs could do with some flooding.

Also - at least you have good parts. :D :D
Btw if there's a kiss scene onscreen and I'm watching with my parents, I'm the one that'll cringe (because I'm watching with my parents) but they'll be all cool. "Grow up, you're old enough to watch this without acting like a 10 year old." :/ Parents, I tell you.

Same goes for most of the winter wardrobes seen in kdramas which is something that you will never wear here, so maybe I'll have drama-induced shopping on winter wardrobe if ever I go at a country which requires them.

I have drooled over delicious coats and sweaters all the time and have had to talk my self out of buying the whole lot of them - not because of the weather, it's freaking freezing (Spring, do you hear me? I think you missed your cue) here, but there are only so many coats I can justify spending money on.

Those of us who do live in wintry climates understand that there is NO way kdrama heroines could really own so many winter coats unless they also own a second apartment for their storage. I always get mad at myself because I should have started counting a lead character's coats from the beginning of a drama, like Bok Joo or even now the men like Goblin, just to know the total of how many coats they supposedly own😂

Required fields are marked *

Winter coats take up so much space in your wardrobe. In fact, one of my winter coats (I own 2) would fill an entire suitcase if I ever wanted to take it on holiday with me. Or, you know, move out of an apartment on the spur of the moment with just one wheelie bag.

😂 I always wonder how people in k-dramas manage to fit everything in a medium sized suitcase. Ji Ho for instance, had coats, boots, sweaters- everything fit. Where can I find suitcases that are bigger on the inside?

1
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

My theory: They've all bought suitcases from Mary Poppins.

4

Or from Doctor Who 😂 He probably revolutionized suitcase storage after working on his Tardis.

2

It’s not just that their endless supply of coats magically fit in suitcases, but there is a usually a complete lack of closet space in their rooftop rooms. Where do they put all the coats and sweaters?

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

@bbstl is totally correct. I have lots of coats, and wear most of them, but storage is a problem. Our "guest closet" is full of just coats, that when we actually have guests, we have to take out all our coats to make room for theirs!

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I feel resentful that kdrama heroines get to own so many winter coats. In addition to the amount of storage space winter coats take up, you've got thick sweaters, thick hoodies, thick socks, thick leggings, thick gloves, and snow boots. Also winter in kdramaland in like a crisp romantic November/early December, not the miserable bone-deep cold of January that requires a puffy cold and walking like a penguin because you're wearing 2 or 3 layers to keep yourself from freezing.

Your story is basically my story!! (I started K-Dramas as a Uni student) though thankfully where I live I have full 4 seasons and a full winter season...so coats galore!!
My first nice winter coat was totally K-Drama inspired! Its light grey, long, and cinches at the waist with a cute belt with a bow of the same material: I still use it :D
The second one I got to buy for myself as a graduation present: its a velvety royal blue :D :D
Of course I'm not counting my ripped jeans, over-sized clothing, and ankle boots at all...

I loved reading this, was so cute! I'm not big on clothes shopping but I can definitely say I once ran out to the mall after watching Cheese in the Trap to emulate a Hong Seol outfit, her clothes in that show are just so cool!

I loved all your pictures of all those beautiful clothes. I'm envious that you have so much fashion sense as a teen. I was a dowdy teenager, which made me look like I was perpetually in jr. high. I'm lost when it comes to fashion and (prepare to roll your eyes) my husband dresses me most of the time. He recently eyed a coat from Hwayugi that he liked for me--the grey one Sun-mi wore for like 1/2 the drama, and we are still looking for it here. I pay much more attention to male fashion in dramas to be honest, because those men are dressed to impress. I'm less likely to buy something for me than for someone else in my family, because I always think I will look (as you say) like an ahjumma (which I already am) instead of a trendy mom. I did get a "best dressed" award a few years ago in fellowship, but again, no thanks to me, but to my husband who knows what looks good on me. I think I might try the business outfits of Misty and Father is Strange though, even though I didn't watch these, your article featured them so well, that I think I could at least pull them off! Oh, and I do have quite the shoe collection, I get that!

This is so adorably cute! 💖

The men definitely dress to impress with their impeccably tailored slim-fits suits (killer formals at its finest)

because I always think I will look (as you say) like an ahjumma (which I already am) instead of a trendy mom.

With your extensive (possibly gorgeous!) shoe collection and a fashionable partner in crime who picks out trendy outfits, I'm sure you ace the mom-style game!

The formals in Misty & Father Is Strange were worn with so much confidence and self-assurance I was in awe. They had this undefeatable aura around them.

Bom's winter wear! They look so comfy and warm! I think I found the drama I'm going to rewatch next lol. Good thing I have no money or I'd be spending them on these.

Go Hye Ran's wardrobe was no joke! She was fierce! If I thought I had what it took to pull those looks off, I'd be working it too. Sadly I do not! (Not sad for my wallet though! LOL!)

I always coveting the cute clothes...but I've also got to covet the slender bodies to go with them. I don't think my current shape would be flattering! But maybe it'll be incentive to start working on it. :P
