[2022 Year in Review] The Bean Count

Our 2022 Year in Review festivities have begun, and at the top of the list is that thing you’ve been prepping for all year. That’s right, it’s time for the Bean Count!
For those new to this Dramabeans tradition, Bean Count is a nerdy way of looking back at your year in dramas by giving the shows you loved “beans.” More love, more beans. The catch is that the number of beans you have to give away is the number of dramas you finished this year.
Here’s how to do your own Bean Count:
1. Get your total beans by counting all the 2022 shows you watched in their entirety. One finished show = one bean. (If it’s a currently airing show that you’re up-to-date on, it also counts as one bean.)
2. Now that you have your total beans, redistribute them among your finished/current shows using whatever logic makes sense to you. You can give each show one bean, give all your beans to one show, or somewhere in between those extremes. Your beans, your rules.
NOTE: This year’s list of shows includes dramas that aired after November 29, 2021 until November 29 this year, to account for the fact that you can’t love a drama till it’s over (as 2022 has so rudely taught us). We’ll add a list of the shows at the bottom of the post. If we missed some, feel free to count them in your list.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I get partial beans for dropping a show?
Nope. No bean for you. You must have watched all the available episodes for it to count as one bean.2. What if I fast-forwarded a show to finish it?
We don’t judge since this is supposed to be a fun tradition. 🙂 If that’s how you watch dramas and it counts as finished in your book, sure, it counts.3. What if I watched a very long show? Shouldn’t it count as a jar of beans?
Sorry. That’s still only one bean. This rule was set in stone when the Bean Count laws were formed. Changing it will anger The Ghost of Bean Count Past.4. Can I give negative beans to some shows, and give even more beans to another show?
Since one finished show = one bean, you can get a negative bean by un-watching a sho–just kidding! Nope. You can’t award negative beans. You can, however, take comfort in the fact that you stole that show’s one bean and gave it to something else.

Its only in Hollywood that women-lead dramas are considered 'special'. In K-dramas its the norm, as well as gender-balanced casts and - something Hollywood rarely does - woman characters who have a support network of female friends. Look at 'Glitch' or 'My Liberation Notes' for example, so many different woman characters and not one of them exploitative.

I earned 22 beans this year. This is only counting dramas that aired this year that I’ve watched, if you count dramas from other years it’s… more. I might need a life. Anyway!
I decided that currently airing dramas get to keep their beans from me, as it’s too early to tell if they are going to be the best things ever and get all the beans, or straight whiff it at the last second and surrender their bean to someone else. I also decided not to mess with fractions of beans, because that sounded like work, so not all the beans were equally earned, but all the dramas I gave a bean to had something that stuck out, or stuck with me afterward. And obviously the ones with multiple beans were my favs. Though I’m not 100% satisfied with how this came out, I just can’t find another bean to take from somewhere so that Our Beloved Summer can have one more, so this is as good as it’s going to get for now. Here they are in the order I completed them!

I did not think the Count would come this soon. I log my bean count in the year the show finishes not on a fiscal or incomplete run (a few shows may complete by year's end). I need to see how a show ends to determine to award bean(s). I am currently incomplete for ALCHEMY OF SOULS (Season 2 is part of Season 1),

Finally my first Bean Count after years of being lurker! This should be very exciting but unfortunately i don't watch many dramas this year (compared to last year). This is not a good year for kdramas even though there are a lot of kdramas produced this year.

I personally think you should get 10 beans for finishing Soundtrack#1. I have never watched any show that boring before (and yes, I lasted only one ep). My opinion has always been that it required a special kind of talent to make a show that boring given it had Han So-hee and Park Hyung-sik(?) as the leads.

When you watch a lot of dramas you are able to watch the good ones and the bad ones, so I think that's why you had such a good year with dramas.
I'm sooo behind, I've only watched 26 dramas of 2022. I rewatched some favorites and watched some oldies, so I have a bunch of dramas on hold. I hope I can keep up before the end of the year so I can give a lot of beanies to my favorites. ☺️

Between the top scorers - Extra was probably a better and more significant show with better acting, but Dead stole some beans away from it by being the only 2022 show I have rewatched so far. Dead also won "Best Archer" and "Best Halfbie" and edged out Alchemy for "Most Anticipated Sequel". If had been scoring by quality or significance instead of how much I liked it and/or wanted to rewatch, the top two would have been Pachinko and then Extra. If I scored on acting, it would have been Extra, then maybe Alchemy & 25, 21. FWIW 25, 21 won minor categories "Best Umbrella Fight" and "Best Sign on Unconscious Person", while Business Proposal won "Best Names for Body Parts" and Gaus won "Most Laughs".

The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won definitely counts; the reason why it's missing from the list is because those are the dramas from Premiere Watch. The same reason why weekenders like It's Beautiful Now aren't listed, even though you deserve more than one bean for 50 episodes, and why web dramas aren't included except Dear X Who Doesn’t Love Me, which was weecapped.

Yeah, as long as something is Korean and started airing after Nov 29 last year, I don't see why you can't vote for it. When it comes down to it, I'm not sure how I know if something is a web drama or not. I guess it's related to whether it airs on network TV in Korea, something about which I generally have no clue.

You’re welcome. Masaki Suda gave a tour de force performance. His 2020 romantic drama film is now available on Viki US: THREADS - OUR TAPESTRY OF LOVE. I have not seen it yet but I will get to it.
Also on Viki US’s “Coming Soon” list is the Japanese remake of ITAEWON CLASS under the title: ROPPONGI CLASS.

62 for the year! Toss in a smattering of chinese dramas and a jdrama or two. I watched more than I thought I did this year. I'm in the general consensus that this year was just alright for kdramas. Despite my gripes with the endings of both, looks like Extraordinary Attorney Woo and 25 21 ended up getting the most beans this year from me, with a slight edge towards Extraordinary. They both had great moments (typically early in the show if I'm honest) and amazing acting.
The ones I was surprised I gave as many as I did were both sports dramas, Mental Coach and Love All Play. Jung Woo seems to pick these dark horses recently. Mad For Each Other was a surprise for me last year and he did great in Mental Coach, even with mustache twirling villainy to contend with and the weird love line that felt shoe horned in. They both seemed to deal with trauma/regret and they tugged at my heartstrings despite the flaws.
Some of these felt like pulling teeth, and I definitely regret not dropping them. Such to make the list of these transgressions?
Love is For Suckers, Again My Life, Forecasting Love and Weather, Rookie Cops and *drum roll* GRID. By far the worst show I completed this year. And drip fed at one agonizing episode a week. If you're contemplating watching it, and haven't and we appear to have similar tastes? Run...run far and run fast. Special mention to The Good Detective 2, which I was super pumped for as I really enjoyed the first season, but this one was a dumpster fire.
Simple disappointments that I don't think were bad, but I definitely expected more from include Good Job, Big Mouth, and The Law Cafe. All felt wasted when I had finished them, whether that was because of an excellent cast, or an interesting idea, or possibly both.

I got 19 beans in 2022, my first year of drama watching. (I also watched ~40 older dramas.) Lack of bean doesn't necessarily mean I'm sorry I watched it - just that others were more beanworthy. Scoring was based on the highly scientific measure of how well do I remember right this minute how much I enjoyed it then? Tiebreaker was did I stay up late on a work night to watch? Update for my own records:
2 more beans, one for Reborn Rich, and one for Our Beloved Summer (which I forgot I watched!). So a total of 10!
I have to completly redistribute my beans now, because Reborn Rich impressed me to the end. It wasn't perfect, but it managed to stick a landing and drove home its theme. And now that I remember watching Our Beloved Summer, I liked it better than Today's Webtoon.

2521: Six, for Kim Tae-ri, Na Hee-do and Ko Yu-rim, and flashbacks to my youth
Through the Darkness: Six, for curly haired Song Ha-young and for a drama to finally show what it's like when the ML isn't the one to catch the villain
Adamas: Two. If only you had given me a more conclusive ending..
Reborn Rich: I will tentatively give you the one bean I will earn by watching you, anticipating some unforgettable Lee Sung-min down the stretch.
Shoutout to Love is For Suckers for unexpectedly being the hardest bean to earn this year. This show confirmed the lessons from "The time we were not in love" ... Friends to lovers stories don't work when the FL takes a hiatus to marry another man in the middle.

I'm at 15 this year, which is high for me. I used to be only a romcom girl, but during lockdown I had enough time to explore other genres. I'm willing to give almost anything a try at this point.
I'd give most of my beans to Business Proposal and Alchemy of Souls, which are by far my favorites of the year. Under the Queen's Umbrella and May I Help You would get the rest. Oh, and 1/2 bean to the one good storyline in Tomorrow. lol

It actually surprised me that I only completed 25 currently airing dramas this year. There were a fair number that showed real promise going in- and I was out after two episodes. But there were some truly outstanding shows as well, and it is to those shows that I am awarding my beans. So here goes:
BUSINESS PROPOSAL- Gets 3 beans plus an extra bean, for a total of four with the extra one awarded for proving that a Korea could produce a good comedy. I actually read the webtoon afterwards (very rare for me) and can actually see that it could have been even better if the screen writer had not completely altered the character of the 2fl's father- and deprived us of the wonderful moment when Grandpa riding to the rescue of his (actual) other grandson and the 2 FL.
GAUS ELECTRONICS gets 2- and a commendation for being willing to walk the comedy path.
EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO gets 5. Everyone in that show did a fabulous job and Park Ein-bin was never better. She is a favorite actress of mine for a reason. Anyone who says that this was not a good year for Kdamas simply did not watch this show. Remember this: Literally 1% of every living human being on this planet did watch the final episode.
ONCE UPON A SMALL TOWN gets 2 beans simply because it took us to a good place- and that is another way for a show to be great.
ALCHEMY OF SOULS gets 4. Fantasy done right- this show was a match for the best of the Chinese fantasies and literally had it all from story to acting to costumes and cinematography.
KING OF TEARS gets 5. The beginnings of Joseon as a Shakespearean historical tragedy (HAMLET fits into this category). Brilliantly written and directed (though with one idiotic mistake) and with first rate performances by all. A Sageuk done right.

Note: I would have awarded a bean to TODAY'S WEBTOON except that the Japanese original was far better. A remake has a substantial advantage going in so, while we still enjoyed it, it simply did not deliver what it should have. Not a bad show by any means but- no bean.

Second note: I simply never had the time to watch UNDER THE QUEEN'S UMBRELLA but my wife did and thought it was fabulous. Obviously, I cannot award beans to a show I myself did not see (except in snippets) but I do want to make it clear that if I had done so I almost certainly would have been awarding beans to this show.
Perhaps, if I ever retire, I will go back and watch it at some future time.

25-21 - 1. The friendships were beautiful, the nostalgic feel great, Wonstein's "Your Existence" was perfect.
Alchemy of Souls - 1. Prince Won's eyebrow and his bromance with Janguk. There has to be more!
Shooting Stars - 1. Simply made me smile. Which is more than can be said for a lot of dramas this year.
All of Us are Dead - 1. Those kids had such fun filming this... It was joyous to watch the bts.

There are TOO many dramas. There are a bunch that I wanted to watch but didn't have the time (The King of Pigs, Anna, Seasons of Blossom, Narco-Saints, Once Upon a Small Town, Revenge of Others, Weak Hero Class 1...), and then there are some that I'm glad I waited as they turned out to be train wrecks (Love is for Suckers, which still got 3 beans from the Dramabeans team). I have 34 beans.

I have watched a decent number of dramas, but my k drama count is abysmal. I got 2 beans from our beloved summer and the silent sea which I thought were last year dramas, so I get a grand total of 6 beans.

I meant out of the dramas that are mentioned in the list above. I don't think they count web dramas otherwise the list would be longer. So even though, I can't count them officially, I can still give them the beans from other shows. There's no rule as such though😅

Though some other web dramas are there, like Week Hero Class 1..actually that's probably the only one that exclusively aired on a web platform xD
Anyways, for the bean count I try to be sort of strict with what dramas apply, so I was just curious if I missed something! But it's just for fun after all!! Ahaha!!

I didn't realize Semantic Error was from this year! It was delightful and cute. I liked how much it felt like a regular kdrama type romance with male leads, even though there was no first snowfall or piggyback rides.

I watched 5 2022 k-dramas: 25-21, My Liberation Notes, Semantic Error, A Business Proposal, & Gaus Electronics.
I'm giving 4 beans to 25-21 - I wasn't as head-over-heels in love with it as some folks, but I found it solid from beginning to end. I'm giving my final bean to Semantic Error - despite a rather stalker-y beginning that I wasn't thrilled with, the second half featured a sweet, legit queer love story - now really, Korea, was that so hard?

This was this the year I got into C-dramas, caught up on older K-dramas on my watch list, and dropped shows like flies (I was weirdly picky for some reason, and learned the art of walking away).
Anyway...
Alchemy of Souls: 2, mostly because I'm excited to see K-drama get into the high fantasy/martial arts genre, and it was a fun watch even if the female lead was a bit disappointing

So many dramas this year. I've tried to watch many dramas for 2022 but I think my attention span only limits less than 15 dramas per year only lmao I've recently checked my last year's list in which I managed to finish 9 dramas. For this year, I got to successfully finished watching 11 Korean dramas (yay! for the increase).
For my 2022 bean count:
Extraordinary Attorney Woo - 🐳🐳🐳🐳
Four beans for being the main highlight of my 2022. Fell in love with Park Eunbin all over again and she continue to amaze me with her nice drama choices. Her chemistry with Kang Taeoh will always be special and close to my heart. The drama itself gave me realization especially on the way I deal situations with people.
Under the Queen's Umbrella - 👸👸👸
Three beans for being an interesting sageuk drama with a heart. Such an amazing performance from the queen herself, Kim Hyesoo. Totally love that the center of the writing is the queen this time and her story as a mother and as a woman.
Twenty Five Twenty One - 🤺🤺
Two beans for being a nice drama that makes you reminisce the beauty and hurtful parts of youth. Heedo and Yijin's relationship growth is so beautiful yet heartbreaking to see.
Business Proposal - 💍
One bean for being a romcom drama that feels like a classic. So many cliche tropes but this drama knows how to make it feel less outdated. Made me laugh somehow and still gave me so much butterflies.

One bean for being a cute little drama that made my heart full. Sooyoung and Yoon Park's chemistry is so good that it will be such a waste if they don't reunite someday with a full-length drama. I thought it will make me sad, but this drama made me really happy.
Overall, it's still a nice year for Kdramas. Here's hoping 2023 will bring much better set of dramas because I always welcome good dramas in my whole being.

I'm shocked that I have 30 beans! The second half of 2022 was so difficult to get through. I miss the days when I could keep up with 10 airing dramas, and enjoy every single one. I never have more than three these days, while enjoying one or none LOL. But 30?!
