Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 24-30, 2023

This week, some dramas go out with a bang (Revenant) while others with a whimper (Numbers). Some see a nice rise in ratings (Not Others, The Uncanny Counter 2) and others soldier on (Heartbeat), deserving more but getting less than they deserve. ‘Tis a cruel mistress this thing we call drama fate.

Congratulations to Revenant for reaching its highest ratings! Solidly written from start to finish, and Kim Tae-ri's performance is awards-worthy.

I read that article and I just do not buy into it, for a simple reason: These are actually very high ratings for a romcom. In short, a whole lot of people are enjoying this show.

I would think that it would be appropriate to point out to the writer of that story that THE REAL HAS COME was extremely timely and topical- and absolutely not out-of-date yet is drawing far lower ratings for a weekender than the relatively recent weekender YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN which was dramatic nonsense featuring not one but two Amnesia Arcs- timeworn tropes indeed. YOU LADY AND GENTLEMAN drew very high ratings for a weekender despite the time worn nonsense.

I personally think Allkpop is not a reliable source. They tend to sensationalize, pick sides, or quote negative comments to back up over the top headline.

The ratings might go down because it is uncomfortable to watch intimate scenes on television with your family. The ratings went down right after episode 8 where the kiss scenes start. Just after the broadcast ended the new episode is already on Netflix. I would prefer to watch and swoon and blush in private.

KTL's broadcast ratings have utmost dipped 1%. I hear ratings around 10 are good enough for cable TV romcom.
On Netflix this week KTL is the #1 show globally beating even the Netflix originals (including English shows).

KTL will have a tough time reaching beyond 11/12% since UC2 has entered the rating game. The First Responders 2 and My Dearest will be airing their first episodes...and they are going to pose a challenge to a fluffy but cliche KTL

I was hesitant to watch episode 13 expecting it to be at sad/mopey episode seeing previews. I guess some had skipped watching the ep13 expecting some sad breakup. Happy to be wrong and so beautifully wrong.

Wow! 'Not others' overtook Heartbeat!!
I am actually enjoying this show a lot..

Hearing good things about Revenant from beanies and ratings also suggest its a good show. Hope I can find a place to watch this.

KTL - With how it went in Ep 13 I wont be surprised if it ends with a lower rating. There is only so much non-content people can watch.

Thus the need for more than just kisses and romance in a romcom. It can't stand alone, after the couple meet and fall in love. Cant exprct life to be all lovey dovey all the time. This is why Crash Course in Romance, Crash Landing On You, Hometown ChaChaCha do well in terms ratings.

I believe 'Hidden Love' squashed that myth. Romance can stand alone. The problem with KTH is its non content and unimaginative scenes between the leads, which becomes repetitive after a while. Having a flat FL lead also adds to the misery - those who do not follow K-pop and watch K-drama on its own merit will have a hard time staying put with YoonaA. YoonA onscreen character is strong, but she doesn't bring much to the role; Junho's onscreen character is so weak that no matter how much effort the poor guy is putting in, it is not working.

Yeah, IMO there just isn't much emotional investment in the couple. There are certain couples I could watch endless fluff scenes and squeal the whole time. These two are not one of them. You need to really develop the romance and get us to practically die for the two to get together, then spoil us with fluff.

I wouldn't put too much stock on KTL's ratings dip. It was the #1 show globally on Netflix (#1 in Netflix Korea too), topping both Non-English and English shows. It was featured in Gallup Korea’s ‘Favourite TV Programs’ survey, with its viewership demographics ranging from teenagers to middle-aged people in their 50s. Junho and Yoona have also topped buzzworthy actors lists for 6 weeks in a row. People aren't uninterested in KTL; they’re just watching online.

I know most people here don't think much of KTL (I personally enjoy it and find it quite fun to watch after an exhausting week), but let’s face it, local viewers like it just fine. 10% ratings is really good for a cable channel rom-com. JTBC hasn’t had a rom-com do this well since Strong Girl Bong Soon, which KTL already surpassed in ratings.

So much HATE for KTL on this website... I've followed Dramabeans for years now and to be honest, it puzzles me to see so much passion against a drama. Is it an antifan kind of thing? I'm a bit out of these trends these days so I might not understand where all of this hate is coming from.
K dramas are Kdramas, with their tropes, their romance and their multiple flaws.
If I want to watch something serious, I watch something else. And IF I don't like where my kdrama is going, I drop It, end of the story. I dont waste my time ranting on and on after every recap about how much I hate It. Seriously, what's the point?
And about KTL itself, kdrama chaebol nonsensical script and all, for the first time, It has a healthy built up romance with it's healthy follow up of logical desire and skinship. Stupid misunderstandings avoided and beautiful couple conversations facing and overcoming problems.
Fun to watch every week. It's just Kdrama, but I wanted to give It a hands up in the midst of all this hate.
Fighting KTL!!

Errrr...no. That's a generalization. In fact, the younger generation and the 'Kiss kiss kiss' crowd would probably be gaga over all the kisses and hugs they are getting. A non-working CEO would not be of concern to them - it's like not doing HW, right? I gave my reasons for its lacklustre appeal above.

It’s fantastic that y’all are loving this show, and I very much recognize that when other people criticize something you love, it can feel like an attack—but it is not a real threat. Truly.

Let’s return our collective attention to where it belongs: the dramas and our thoughts about them.

Sorry, I can’t agree with your generalisation about those having issues with KTL are young childish viewers. I for one have watched Kdrama since 2005 and am on the way to be in the silver demography.

I love watching a good romance which is what set me off to become a kdrama fan. When the KTL teasers first came out, you had no idea about my excitement. That unfortunately became the biggest disappointment in recent memory. I can’t believe - with a great actor in Junho - they just capitalise on his pretty face without making any effort to have at least some story. It is a nil null zero plot. I dropped it after ep 8 - no motivation to watch it at all.

Instead, I’m rewatching the 2001 Hotelier - a much much better drama about a hotel and those who work in it, with an electrifying romance.

Please don’t insult the intelligence of others who don’t share your view. To some people including myself, King The Land is simply a bad drama, period.

Yes, it’s a kdrama from 2001 which then inspired a Japanese and a Chinese versions subsequently if my memory is correct.

1

Obviously you forget that people are really different....Well, let me tell you something, I had started watching Kdrama since 2003 and sat through the rich guy-poor lady cliché (which has been used time and time again in early romcom (2000+ till 2015) such as Falling for Innocent, Secret Boys Over Flowers, What's Wrong With Secretary Kim and Secret Garden.

As for youngsters...I am already in my late thirties (nearing 40) BTW...

In case you are thinking I am a hater of romance. I am huge fans of romance novels, meloromance, romcoms that dont deal with chaebols only and saeguk romance.

I'd say that it's quite the opposite. Young viewers, whose first drama is King the Land, love it because they don't know any better. Whereas older viewers, who have been watching dramas for a long time, don't love it because we know that there's better.

I was just intrigued as to why so much hate towards the drama going on and on. It was a genuine question with no ill intention, as from time to time I check Dramabeans for fun and it drew my attention.
I'm an old viewer and in my case I've learnt what not to expect in Kdramas. I wanted to give a hands up to KTL bc for once, first, it shows a realistic romance between two people in their 30s. Meaning they can't get enough of each other after they start their relationship. Second, it's just a romcom, not a mystery, murder, fantasy, comedy blend that has me wondering what I'm watching.
Third it's fun to watch when I want to disconnect.

Thanks for clarifying. I agree that a strong point of this show is the realistic "can't get enough of each other" physicality. I'm one of those who is enjoying unapologetically pointing and laughing at the rest of it, though, and if you want to understand why there's so much 'hate' (which I don't think is quite the right word), many commenters have laid out their views in extensive and well-reasoned detail. (And if you don't want to bother, that's completely valid, too. We're all just here for fun.)

For what it's worth, almost all of the responses in this thread are not directly to you but to a commenter who responded to you with dismissive contempt toward other beanies and then deleted the comment and changed their display name. 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, it's nice to see a longtime beanie back in the comments - join us whenever you can!

I also think "hate" is a strong word. If people genuinely "hated" the show, they would likely drop it.

Unless they are the recappers, what would be the benefit of watching something you hate, can't stand, etc?

I only hate-watch shows that I've had hopes for but was let down in the end... yet not let down enough to just drop. You know, the "I waited years for this promising project that sounded right up my alley and my bias is in it, so what could go wrong? well, turns out A LOT" kind of situation. I'm not proud of it, but I did force certain bad dramas down my own throat for that very reason. Perhaps I shouldn't, but big expectations naturally lead to big disappointment, and the big disappointment - to hate-watch and "lemme tear this trash to pieces" comments. I'm always trying to stay respectful tho, which is way more than some such shows objectively deserve^^

6

You've just described "hate-watching," which is totally a thing that people do.

I thought people hate watch for a benefit such as youtubers who make content around the stuff they hate. I didn't think that fit the folks here.

Why do people (aside from content makers) hate watch shows?

0

Because people love complaining. People love to criticize and talk about how much they hate something and find other people who hate it just as much. Hate-watching is like venting. It's just an outlet to channel your negative feelings.

1

Are these different opinions rooted in hate or simply personal perspectives?

Here we go again. This is a place for kdrama discussion and that means everybody is free to speak as long as they are polite and respectful. YOU are free to love or hate any kdrama and talk about it. Everybody ELSE is also free to do the same.

They can have thousands of reasons to keep posting about a drama they hate, it can be cathartic, therapeutic, and even fun. They don't need permission or judgement.

Every year this happens, most beanies won't like a particular drama and will be very talkative about it. The drama itself has some kind of quality that makes people keep watching, it's usually easy to imagine and explain what they are, and this will bother those that do like same drama. Please don't let your appreciation for a drama make you try to censor other people's behavior.

This kinda reminds me of the "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all" and honestly, that frustrates me.

Like I'm not saying it's okay to be cruel or disrespectful to people but, for me in particular, I'm not a "positive" person. I can have more critical or negative thoughts and if I weren't allowed a space to share them, it legitimately makes my body hurt.

I try not to be too critical of a show because I know the cast and crew didn't *intend* for it to have whatever flaws but sometimes frustrations with a project need to be shared. Even if it's get another perspective or to vent. Also, sharing thoughts, whether they're positive, negative, or neutral, can make another person feel seen and less alone. There are folks who come on this site and don't post things because they are shy or self conscious about having opposing thoughts to the "norm". Using KTL as an example, the show is successful and for some, it could be totally baffling why considering it's just a basic romcom without much substance but they don't feel comfortable saying such a thing because it's popular and the idols' fans could jump down their throats. In that instance, it's validating to have other people who are like "yeah, I agree. The show is blah blah blah".

That may be true for some, but I wasn’t familiar with Taec until this show. (In fact, several Beanies in the comments are surprised they are enjoying a Taec show.) Nor do I typically watch slapstick. I don’t mind vampires, it is true, but don’t seek them out either.

What’s gotten me excited is that starting episode 5-6, it’s developed into one of the sweetest, tropiest, slow burn romances I’ve seen recently. No one will say it’s a masterpiece, not even the show, but it’s a light, romantic watch, which is rare in recent dramas.

Since I'm a fan, I won't answer the OP's questions. But if they continue with the show, I hope they'll join the recaps where a lot people can answer. And if not, clearly they are with the SK audience; it's just not for them, and that's OK.

I don't think that's true either. Seriously, what's with the phrasings this week?

I wouldn't call myself his fan nor am I into vampire/slapstick humor. I can't even think of any dramas with slapstick humor off the top of my head. I wasn't even interested in watching it until I learned it was easily accessible for me to watch and someone had mentioned it.

The reason *I* like the show is because I like the characters. I like their development. I like the ways the shots are set up. I've never even thought about things like that before but with this show, I did and it made me appreciate the crew behind the scenes. I like that it's fairly fun, light, and it's totally different to ANY portrayals of vampires I've EVER seen. Plus I think it's evident the cast is having fun playing their roles.

I find that these ratings posts often have the most judgmental comments. People are way too obsessed over ratings and it ends up making people angry on both sides of the spectrum and everyone feels the need to either defend or villify the dramas and, most importantly, their audiences.

It's not fun at all.

Watch what you like, guys. Speculate all you want about why a drama is or is not doing well, but try to refrain from being a jerkface about it and passing judgement on others. It's not that deep.

I think people just want the shows they like to be validated with ratings and when that doesn't happen, it's just a bummer haha.

Probably worse if you're a fan of particular actors in the project because those ratings can affect those actors' future prospects.

5

@ruhi0101 I don't think anyone who didn't like the show at Ep 4 answered your question. I'll try because even tho I wasn't grossed out by the show, I wasn't in luv-luv by Ep4, and may have even dropped later down the line. What changed? As I mentioned, the romance arc picked up. So, if you're a fan of slow burn romances with tough-to-soft females and adorable male leads, I'd say watch till Ep 11 at least (where we are now). It delivers!

Funnily enough for a fantasy show, this is one of the most relatable, down-to-earth, honest couples I've seen in dramaland. You worried about consent (rightly so) but as the episodes progress, they become one of the most balanced relationships I've seen. With the power, arguably, in the FL's hand. They even equitably divide house chores! (Catnip to some of us.)

The comedy gets toned down a lot, and the vampire focus is almost absent (to the chagrin of some). As for blood, well, it's about vampires; it's their defining feature. However, until now, no exchange (consensual or otherwise) has happened till now. Blood does play a role, but as you noted, it's about the past life connection, not vampire lust. I don't want to give anything more away. Will that change? Probably. So keep that in mind. But if you do decide to watch, that's where the show is *at the moment.*

Happy drama journey, whichever direction you choose to take.

I'm enjoying "Heartbeat," and I'm going to assume it's doing fine internationally. It would have been nice if the numbers were stronger, but as I've said before, it doesn't seem like there's a large MT audience for any show.

KTL wasn't able to build on its peak at 11% from a couple of weeks ago, but still has maintained some very strong numbers. Consequently, I'm not sure there's anything important to read into these ratings about audience reaction to or the quality of the show when it's continuing to win (with a steady 9 or 10%) against the other non-weekenders in its time slot. I mean, it's not like it suddenly dropped to 5% or something. In short: it's still a big hit.

KTL is interesting to me because while yes the ratings are high there seems to be a lack of buzz surrounding it? Last year’s BUSINESS PROPOSAL had similar ratings (I’d actually argue lower ratings since it aired on a public channel) however it seemed to generate far more hype no?

I find this phenomena peculiar but fascinating. For example, THE MOON THAT EMBRACES THE SUN had massive ratings but other than spotlighting the incredible child actors, I wouldn’t consider it a classic. Instead I’d argue it’s YOU WHO CAME FROM THE STARS that’s the classic. Not only did the drama cement Kim Soo-hyun’s hallyu status but it still remains relevant today, almost a decade after it aired.

So if ratings aren’t the sole indicator of a drama’s popularity (or longevity), what is?

After exit of teen actors METS pretty much became KSH's one man show and people mostly kept watching it: a) for him, b) out of fond memories of young characters, c) to clown FL actress' flatter than my curves in middle school performance. So yeah, it may be considered classic because it's a certified hit and drama everyone knows, but its overall longevity is debatable at best. Perhaps we can classify it as semi-classic.

I'd say one needs to have ratings, buzz and longevity to be a true winner. Most hit shows settle for two of these factors max. There's also a critical acclaim, but that's a completely another beast...

Lately, JTBC has been doing a good job promoting their dramas and placing them in the right time slot. It looks like KTL is hitting the spot for a lot of local viewers no matter how we judge it. 10% on cable channels is pretty good.

@linarrick Certainly King the Land has no critical buzz, and it won't make anyone's list as one of the all time great rom-coms--it would need a little more writing (or even, dare I say, some writing) to have that.

But what do you mean there is no buzz around it? Do you mean in Korea itself? Its the top international series on Netflix, those sites that select "buzzworthy" actors have picked Junho and Yoona the last six weeks in a row. I was thinking the opposite that, there was a really surprising amount of buzz around it, given that its essentially just a vehicle for its two stars to show that even if they aren't dating in real life, they should be.

In fact, I'll make two predictions based on buzz:

1. We are going to see more rom-coms whose main attraction is spotlighting well known stars. (As a romance fan, I'd like to see more rom-coms with clever writing and lesser known stars, like Won-Ji An, or Kim Da-mi--but I'll still watch these shows I'm predicting will happen.)

2. To reassure @gikata, based on the success of Revenant, we are going to see a lot more supernatural horror, with inferior writing and definitely inferior actors to Kim Tae-ri. (I'm not going to watch those.)

On the other hand, I'm not exactly on the cutting edge of television viewing, so it wouldn't surprise me if my predictions of buzz go bust.

I'll take okayish horror/occult thriller over awesome serial killer romcom or brilliant revenge makjang anytime so bring them on, kdramaland! But honestly I am not sure that REVENANT's fame will truly improve the genre's popularity that much. Surely it'll do good things for careers of cast/crew, but other than that... Much more heavy on gore THE GUEST was very popular too, even to the point of serious sequel/movie discussions, and none of these came to fruition in the end. Too much of a niche market compared to star OTP romcoms. But we'll see.

With BUSINESS PROPOSAL my friends (who aren’t big kdrama fans) and their mothers all watched it, same with EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO. When I’ve seen my friends recently they haven’t heard of KING THE LAND which I guess puzzled me? But making generalised deductions out of my small sample is silly. I think I’m just curious why some dramas may have the ratings and buzz at the moment only to fizzle out and be barely mentioned again, while others with ‘lower’ ratings manage to hold interest over time?

My friend rarely discuss it meanwhile they talk business proposal like there is no tomorrow. Hyoseop and sejeong IG followers rise significantly . compare to when business proposal hasn't aired and now all hyoseop posted min has 2 million likes each.

All business proposal content reach million viewers on the swoon channel and sbs channel meanwhile king the land hardly achieve that.

I just feels king the land fans less active on the internet compare to BP fans.

First of all, let me say I have absolutely NO authority in talking about buzz, although I do have 14 followers on Instagram, so I think of myself as an influencer. But, in the end I am not arguing what you say.

BUT
Are those statistics when Business Proposal was shown, or Business Proposal now. If the latter, that would make sense, since Business Proposal was amuch better than King the Land, and would last longer in public opinion than King the Land will (that's my ill-informed opinion, so it could be really wrong.)

Finally, my point to @linarrick was not that Business Proposal didn't have significant buzz, it was that King the Land has significant buzz as well, as I think a lot of stats/websites I could cite would "prove." My daughter and her friends, who don't generally watch kdramas, but are subscribers to Netflix, are watching King the Land. So that's my anecdotal indicator.

But again, me, a 64 year old man, talking about buzz, is ridiculous, so I'm that's all I'll say in "arguing" with you!

I was following business proposal during airing, so I know what I reference. Hyoseop and Se Jeong gain 4 million+ followers after the show ended. Its And their duet reaching 10 juta million on hyoseop IG at that time. I think it help they airing alongside another buzz drama which is 2521, so the buzz international feels so huge. In terms of veiwership on netflix, i think King The Land exceed Business proposal. Business proposal just has around 279 million hours view meanwhile king the land exceed that. It's just this year the viewers feels not as active as previous years.

I'm really curious about Heartbeat, can anyone offer a theory?
Can it be called a flop???
Why?
I get all the reason that most beanies are loving it and I'm one of them, I'm interested in the possible explanations for the knetz dislike!

It's not Taec himself, is it? Isn't he popular?
Is it the vampire aspects? It's barely there!
It can't be the FL, right? She's adorable!
The lack of conflict maybe?
Do they only want fantasy if it's packed with melodramatic romance?

I'm not sure how it can be called a flop. It appears to be consistently getting about half of the total audience for Mondays and Tuesdays to tune in. And because there are only two shows airing that night in SK, and currently, the other one is drawing only slightly more viewers to it, I think the only logical thing we can conclude is simply that not a lot of people in SK are watching cable TV at the beginning of the work week.

I love this show and appreciate DB's lively commentary on it, but I don't think it's fair to try and extrapolate or theorize what the "problem" is because it's not at all clear to me that there *is* any real problem here that has anything to do with the show or its stars.

That's what I'm curious about. I don't really care about ratings but I'm always interested in what the knetz love or hate or choose to ignore, because it will have a consequence for the next dramas.
I thought that kind of ratings was very low but maybe are you saying that's kind of average for those days around that time? That would be better because it means it's not a hit but also not a flop.

It's hard to judge but ENA is doing better and it's not a public channel.

I think dramas with a touch of fantasy are not the ones with the best ratings except when they are written by famous writers. Neither of the leads are strong. Taecyeon has not a great reputation as an actor and Won Ji-Ahn is a newcomer.

Unpopular genre (not just vampires, fantasy romances in general long have long fallen out from k-viewers grace) + unfortunate timeslot + leads lacking ratings attracting power (Taec IS popular, but not that much as an actor - all his shows that did better needed other reasons aside of him for success). I'd also add not that catchy initial episodes, but I'm clearly in the minority here with such opinion. But mostly first 3 factors.

I also agree with your last point. The first few episodes were not that strong for me. I still cringe at that CGI. I think the decline began almost immediately. I also wonder if the switch to romance after a few episodes from out and out camp comedy hurt it as well. As those still left watching for comedy dropped further when the show switched focus.

K-audience has a rather... specific taste in comedies I often cannot understand, so it's hard to judge that aspect. But the lack of even blend between the two subgenres likely did not help indeed.

@lixie, no, fantasy comedies (romcoms and not) used to do REALLY well in SK, at some point it was THE IT genre everyone and their moms tried to cash in because it almost always guaranteed ratings and buzz... Then, just like with any other trend, long-term overexposure and general declining in quality, as @vienibenmio rightly pointed out below, made public gradually lose interest, and now we're here in the era where it's nearly impossible to get a hit drama in that niche. I suppose after some dry years it will make a grand comeback, but who knows when this will happen...

The CGI is camp gold! I will die on this hill!

Also, we knew from episode 1 that this would be a romance. He wants to become human to experience heart-thumping romance!!

LOL. That it was. So bad it might be good. We’re not seeing much camp now tho.

3

I've just read somewhere that he actually wants to experience that one specific part of human romance for which a proper blood circulation is ABSOLUTELY necessary... Cannot unsee it now)))

2

@indyfan Not even a little campy when Woo-hyeol sniffed the air trying to smell the “love” in it because the lodger said it was there???

3

Thanks for all that have offered opinions!

I'm still not sure if I believe this idea that knetz are not into fantasy itself, though many others have also said it before. It's such a popular element, if the studios knew it would be a challenge I doubt we would still have dozens of kdramas with a supernatural element every year.

I don't think it's the romance either, we knew it was going there since the start and that's the formula of many successful dramas. They start with lots of silly comedy, soon it's all about the romance, then angst and back to happy moments. The drama has done that shift quite nicely because it's a slow romance.

If I had to guess I'd say it's the genre, they don't really like comedy and supernatural together, I can't remember many popular dramas that mixed both like that.

3

Indyfan when you dropped that cryptic comment (can't find that particular comment now) I knew we were heading towards the right direction. @gikata
I absolutley am dead sure blood circulation is NOT a problem here LOL!

I don’t know if the show heard our collective cries or it’s those voodoo dolls, but I am squealing now. Vampie sure has no problem in that area. 😂

1

@indyfan Boy! Did that speed up!! The masion must be very hot tonight. Oh! In-Hae must now know the literal meaning of 'hot and cold' cue Katy Perry LOL!

1

I am not convinced so far, this whole "beating heart=love" metaphor is a little off logically speaking. Even FL thinks so by pointing out to him that his centuries-long devotion to his first crush was the real deal, lack of pulse notwithstanding. Dire need of blood circulation for certain things is more believable...

1

@gikata @minniegupta1 @indyfan Oooooohhhhh, I JUST realized what y'all were alluding to!🙈🙊 haha

4

@minniegupta1 It’s at warp speed compared to OBY! But otherwise, they took their sweet time…

@gikata To enjoy this show, you do not want blood pumping to your brain (and talking about logic and stuff). Everything, ahem, below is good.

@britney I don’t know how we got here! LOL. At least the show has more class than me.

OK. I’m gonna stop commenting now.

2

@britney , you're blessed to have a pure mind many of us here, me including, certainly lack)))

@indyfan , it could've been even more brainless tbh, I might have like it more then...

3

@indyfan I do not mind getting 'here' at all!! I think this show has kept the right balance. I always feel a 12 edpisode *ahem* somehow works out better than the standard 8th episode, because then it's either too much of it, or they simply forget it ever happened (never understood that logic, their neurons shut down or what!). Of course, sometimes they take toooooo long and payback is too unsatisfying so I am definitely happy with this one so far.

1

I wonder if it's because there have just been a lot of bad or disappointing fantasy romances and people are sick of the genre.

Most likely because there genre itself used to be HUGE in kdramas, but it's been truly a while since a show like that did seriously well. MR QUEEN, if it even counts with all it's time-travel body-share/swap isekai sageuk complications, was probably the lastlatest.

I appreciate your pragmagtic answer and yet it also made me so sad haha

A quality show could be completely dismissed over such superficial reasons such as being newcomers or lacking ratings appeal. But I suppose it's better to just accumalate experience flying under the radar than have a big flashy show that's just basically window dressing for an already established fanbase.

They have kept the visual supernatural elements to a minimum though even if the context and the narrative elements are situated within the drama’s fantastical universe.
And, I can’t blame you for finding much of ep 1 fairly boring (my words) as I also didn’t find the initial scene- setting with the Haesun character riveting. As I binged the first few eps, I ff’ded through that stuff.

Congrats to REVENANT. I'd say it deserved even more, but given the genre and main topic it probably already did beyond everyone's hopes. Now if only that meant we'll get more good occult shows in the future... too optimistic of me, probably. I'd love to read more about domestic reception of the show aside of obvious "acting is wow", does anyone have some links perhaps?

Wonder if I'll have something to watch in the following week...

I don't know why Heartbear has the ratings it does but whatever. There's been many a drama that was underappreciated and overlooked for one reason or another.

It *does* make me once again think about how hard it is to get ratings. Successful programs make it seem so easy haha.

Regardless of the ratings, I'm thinking the leads of Heartbeat will be awarded during the year end awards, likely for couple or chemistry. Whatever it's called.

Perspective. One of the favorite romantic dramas here among beanies back in the day (2018, is that considered back in the day?) was tvN’s A POEM A DAY/YOU WHO FORGOT POETRY (16 eps). A massive shipping war. I think most of us on both sides of the war look back fondly at those days. It was fun.
The average national Nielsen rating for A POEM A DAY: 1.011%
So HEARTBEAT’s average rating may be south of 3% now. It doesn’t matter. HEARTBEAT for whatever reason didn’t resonate with the SK viewing public. I personally am enjoying it and Taec.

That is unfortunate. I am sure I watched it on DramaFever (RIP). Even though (as referenced above) the ratings were lousy I give high marks to the production staff on the care spent on presenting the narrated poems. The visual was a very important consideration.
In DramaBeans there are 5 recap posts for APAD under the title: YOU WHO FORGOT POETRY.
In the comments for each post our beanie @hades provided the translated poems for each episode. You can find all of them.
I am a Jang Dong-yoon fan. My personal favorite narrated poem is his towards the end of episode 14.
The poem is “Lily Magnolia” by Do Jong Hwan:
Here is the text:

Here (on Youtube) is how it was beautifully presented in episode 14:
(Warning. First, I don’t think it is a spoiler but watch at your risk. Second, I can’t find the english subbed version (it exists). I am guessing this is in Indonesian. It doesn’t matter. You will get the idea.)

Unfortunately the link above doesn’t take you directly to the poem. Here is the text in the link:
(Ep. 14, Last Poem, 00:55:16)

"Lily Magnolia," by Do Jong Hwan

I was happy because I met you
and I also suffered because I met you.
When I tossed and turned in bed while hugging a body
that no longer had feelings for me
I felt flower petals falling on my head from above me.
In a garden where lily magnolias bloom
after the white magnolias wither away
The thought of lily magnolias blooming again
pained me a great deal.
As I watched the tree and flowers gradually part ways
it was difficult to stand beside the tree.
It's like watching yourself become a cruel person.
I was happy because I met you
and I also suffered for a long time because of you.

This drama viewership ratings post comments are getting a bit personal. Unless you live in Korea and watch through Korean television (and I assume most of us don’t), we don’t contribute anything to the ratings. Korean dramas are produced first and foremost for Korean viewers (exception probably Squid Game), so their taste is what matters. So actually international viewers are the “weird one” if we deemed a show should've gotten better/worse ratings. Please don’t take the ratings too seriously. Hopefully I’m polite enough in sharing my two cents to not trigger reply attacks.

I hope it stays this way, with the Korean audience first and foremost in mind, because then it will remain authentic and local. The moment they start catering to the broader audience with little to no knowledge of the local nuances, the shows will inadvertently stray into areas that will chip away at the original draw of these shows, making them homogenous. As it is, when I watch Korean movies, I feel I am watching a different society.
