Originally published in the Journal of Personality in 1997, psychologist shared a theory positing that one consequence of fame is chronic self-consciousness; his proposed theory that “because other people are aware of them, famous people might be more likely to be aware that other people are aware of them.” This theory seems to say that fame functions like a funhouse mirror. Fame creates a distorted view of self, one that amplifies certain features over others. It leads to “greater levels of self- focused attention,” as famous people view themselves through the perspective of others, which leads to them feeling a heightened sense of self-consciousness.

People in the public eye exist in a world with a consistent audience. Because they tend to analyze their own actions by virtue of being observed by others, “the accompanying self-consciousness may be both unavoidable and chronic.” Famous people are hyper-aware of their image and can feel intensely self-conscious as a result.

Existing in a state of heightened self-consciousness can mean living in extreme discomfort. A psychologist recently observed that some famous people tend to retreat from the public eye in order to escape that level of self- consciousness, yet this type of retreat isn’t always possible. While some element of self-doubt is part of being a person in the world, extreme self-consciousness leads to extreme self-doubt, a sense of lacking, or not knowing who you really are.

The current world of instant social media spotlight does not help. Because of the culture of fame, the expectations and ideals that famous people are held to are superimposed onto them by others, meaning that meeting that ideal, projected image is virtually impossible. A heightened level of self-consciousness can easily create an unstable environment, where a person constantly doubts their own actions or loses a sense of who they are as a person.

While there doesn’t appear to be one direct solution to the complexities of fame, there seems to exist some actionable ways that people can navigate those demands, by trying to stay as connected to their truest selves as possible, often by stepping back from the limelight to reconnect to who they are.

The more I learn about Korean entertainment in particular, the more upsetting and frustrating it is. It's almost like a sick symbiotic relationships between fans, agencies, and the entertainers.

How does one maintain their "true" selves when in order to appeal to the masses, you have to be what "they" want. Heaven forbid, you go against the grain or go on untreaded ground. And then people are like "well, they chose to become a celebrity so they are to live under scrutiny and be on a pedestal for the rest of their lives"

The music video 'OMG' by NewJeans is set in a mental institution, the members suffering from various dissociative states. One member (Hanni) thinking she's an iphone because she exists only to please her fans. The MV has literally nothing to do with the accompanying song.

I immediately thought of this video too. I know the video raised some eyebrows (I think some felt it may have trivialized mental health issues), but I appreciate how it brings attention to the mental health risks of being a very young person in the public eye.

Re: the song vs the video, you could argue the song is related in the sense that singing it is part of one of the roles played by the characters in the MV, i.e. the role of 'being NewJeans'. Within the MV, it serves as another prop, like the dance and the costumes they're wearing in their imaginary (?) performance. Danielle is even seen breaking the fourth wall to double-check with the film crew that they are indeed NewJeans, and that they are indeed in the process of filming a music video.

This reminds me of ep 82 of You Quiz on the Block where Gong Yoo shares a poem that resonated with him, called "Not" by Erin Hanson:
You are not your age, nor the size of clothes you wear,
You are not a weight, or the color of your hair.
You are not your name, or the dimples in your cheeks.
You are all the books you read, and all the words you speak.
You are your croaky morning voice, and the smiles you try to hide.
You’re the sweetness in your laughter, and every tear you’ve cried.
You’re the songs you sing so loudly when you know you’re all alone.
You’re the places that you’ve been to, and the one that you call home.
You’re the things that you believe in, and the people whom you love.
You’re the photos in your bedroom, and the future you dream of.
You’re made of so much beauty, but it seems that you forgot
When you decided that you were defined by all the things you’re not.

Sometime ago, I read an article online that listed all the reasons that acting is a super stressful occupation. It really seemed to take a toll on the pysche. For instance, the anxiety as you wait for your next gig - the extremes of feast or famine. And projects falling through, etc. I know that I'm not cut out for what it takes mentally. I am so relieved not to have any interest or talent for acting because God knows I have enough troubles. Thank God I never took a theater class in school. Who knows, I might have been bit by the acting bug and for the rest of my life I would be living in suffering for my passion. If you think about all the negative aspects of being a celebrity, it makes you wonder why anybody would want to be an actor. Isn't it much better to be wealthy and anonymous? I think not being famous is such a blessing and freedom. I would hate not being to walk around, head in the clouds. Not being able to wander freelyhrough a farmers market would be such a painful loss for me lol. Again, the ideal is to be powerful and wealthy and anonymous haha.

Two older shows with upbeat, fun OSTs are Weightlifting Fairy and Cinderella and the Four Knights. Some possibilities: From Now On by Vincent Blue, Somehow by Jamie, I’ll Pick You Up by Standing Egg, My Romeo by Jessi, For You by BTOB.

I went to a Twice concert recently and also suggest The Feels, Talk That Talk.

A few other soundtrack faves: Straight by Dindin from Dali, Ready Merry Go! by Romantic Punch from Flower Boy Next Door, Wake Up by Weeekly from Hello Me!, All About by MelodyDay from Master’s Sun

Two oldies used in various dramas:
“Bounce” by Cho Yeong Pil
and
“Fantastic Baby” by Big Bang

Also, there’s “Bomba”(Jessy Matador) which is not K-pop but was used for a video for Love in the Moonlight, with Park Bo Gum in his sageuk robes dancing with his eunuchs - well, you have to see it to believe it.

I can think of at least a dozen MeloMance songs that make me bust out in smiles from the very first note, but I’ll keep it to one recommendation: “Invitation”

AKMU - “How People Move” (Will also add a little pep to your step while walking.)

Relating to a question @kafiyah-bello posed the other day, I'd like to know something:

How do folks keep up with the Fan Wall and what do you like to read there?

So, more than "How do you, yourself, decide what to post to the Fan Wall," I'm asking how you interact with it as a reader.

➡How often do you go over there?
➡Do you feel you read everything posted?
➡What content draws you over to the Fan Wall?

I go every day, keep up with every post, and love that we can add images (obvs). But I don't just mean for my own contributions--I adore seeing what other Beanies see.

I only go to Fan walls when I have an excess of free time. Though there are often quite funny and interesting discussions between Beanies, this is not part of my routine.
I came to Dramabeans for the dramas recaps, and stayed for the community posts such as What are we watching / You can only choose one; and fun environmental games Would you rather / Treasure hunts / etc.

If I'm tempted by a Fan Wall post, it's probably something on a drama I'm watching/have watched, or an actor/actress that I like, or something witty. I like to read what other think or like.
I'm in awe of those, like you, who publish a lot. I do not know how to make a gif but that's a rabbit hole mine that I prefer to not explore.

My expression was not the best nor the clearest...

Thinking about it, it might have a look at the Fan pages section while watching a drama. My bad habit of doing two things at the same time being sustained by a (more than) correct subtitle-reading-speed and the fact that I'm watching simultaneously with a friend, so fast-forwarding is not possible or would require a lot more technical comments in our chat when the drama does not fully engage me. Ok, that's 3 things at the same time since I'm chatting with her on my phone, watching a drama and reading whatever appeals to me. That's bad. I was happy to start watching dramas because it forced me to concentrate on the screen instead of just listening while reading something else. I'm definitely not proficient enough in Korean as to not need the english subtitles... has my reading speed increased? Not really a new talent, but another gain (turn out I am able to recognise faces and retain names... when I see them a lot and concentrate... that is to say,a different setting than when meeting a new colleague or member of the board game club).

OMG @darwi! I feel you on this! Unfortunately, I've been known to use DB to distract myself from concentrating on a drama--which has, at its core, a kind of irony that I'm not going to look too carefully in the face 😁

3

1. I usually go to the fan wall once or twice a day.
2. I often love to read everything but when I don’t have much time, I just skim.
3. I’m interested in almost everything, except posts/comments on little details in shows I haven’t watched, because I’d have no idea what beanies are talking about.

As a poster, I post when I’m in a good mood about a show or an actor and when I can come up with something a little creative. At the moment, I’m watching several shows but not deeply in love with any, so I don’t have any motivation to post.

Required fields are marked *

You actually convinced me to watch Goblin and Run on, and you and other beanies made me start My dearest as well :-) And I’ve got to say, although I’m not deeply in love with the last one yet (at ep 3), I can see Nam Goong Min is mesmerising, which came as a total surprise to me as in my mind, he’s always been Chief Kim.

I’m only half ep in with Goblin and still a bit struggling with the FL in Run on, but I expect I’d like those 2 shows to some extent.

While I was on the fence about DWY (because you loved it until ~ep 13, I believe), the recent post about “When to drop” has discouraged me a little bit ☺️

5
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

For me, to watch Run On is to watch everyone, and I mean everyone EXCEPT the FL (and I think of her as the foil against which everyone else shines). Like everyone, as in, when I saw the manager in the Moon Show the other day I shouted, “It’s Ye-Jun! It’s Ye-Jun!” And he’s a secondary character in RO, only not—sort of one of the best characters?!? God, I love that show. It’s OK if you don’t like it, and can’t get past its major flaw.

BUT, what I meant was—what do you need Fan Wall posts on that will get you over the hump (which is usually how I lure unsuspecting Beanies into watching dramas they are ambivalent about. Yes, I’m like the witch in Hansel and Gretel)? I mean maybe it’s my fave parts of Run On!

Drop DWY after episode 14. I think @darkcc ended up being right about this—it ends fine there. No loose ends get tied up in 15-16 and unless you’re only watching for the sexy times, there’s nothing to see there.

Finally, to defend myself on My Dearest, ever since episode 1 I have only been watching the scenes where our OTP are there together. Literally. I skip every other scene. OK. I’ll watch the scenes with the ML and the evil princess, because I’m sorry but she’s awesome.

4

@attiton I’m easily lured into watching any show if I see others describing the main characters, especially the male one(s), having appealing core personality. People are more attractive in motion, and what I meant by that is that GIFs and even short clips are never enough to lure me, as someone who hasn’t watched a show, into watching it. So fan wall GIFs are more about sharing with those who already watched that show the joy of watching, like if I already saw the beautiful Cha Eun Woo in motion, I’d definitely appreciate a GIF that captures a moment of him. But what can lure me into watching Cha Eun Woo in the first place would be some notes on his character and/or his acting ability. That’s what I’d like to look for in fan wall posts when I consider a show. I can tolerate a bad script if the good actors make it work (more or less) and make me care for the characters.

About Run on, I have more prolem with the actress playing the FL than how the FL was written. But many people praised SSK in that role, so she must have improved later on, and I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.

6

I can encourage you in the Run On love. It was the only drama where, by the end, I just wanted to spend time with the characters. I felt like they were friends and genuinely missed them when the drama was over.

5

I post in mine quite a bit and try to read others' posts at least once daily. I've been struggling with balancing fanwall posts and recap comments, though, it's hard to know what to say by the time the recap comes along because I've already said my immediate thoughts on my fanwall.

9

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, this balance is hard for me too. I remember @indyfan saying once for HeartBeat (maybe mid-run) that there was going to be no way that we'd all have enough to say on the recaps after the huge amount of Fan Wall chatter right after airing...but, um, we totally did have more to say!!

But no, seriously, I know what you mean. I also think, though, that the Fan Wall and the recaps have different audiences--or more precisely, not very much overlap. Lastly, don't forget about all the lurkers who come for the recappers first and us second...they won't know you're "repeating yourself" (and I feel sure we don't mind all that much either!!).

6

1) When there is a new recap/news, etc I read it directly in the post. But if there is no new post, I read new comments by Beanie button. So I often go on the fan wall.

3) The ones that have the same interest than me like the dramas I watch or the music I listen.

Omo same here 😂. I found the tab "Beanies" quite early on but I always stopped at the 8 featured beanies thinking that was all there to it 😅 I didn't know I had to scroll down more. When I posted for the first time on my fan wall, I did it because I thought no one would see my post haha, I thought it would be my own corner (not that I didn't appreciate the "likes", but the idea of having my own corner seemed quite fascinating 😅). 1- My DB default bookmarked page is the beanies page, because the homepage is extremely tiring to navigate for me. So I see the fanwall posts every time I visit the site, a few times a day. And I click more posts if I notice the posts have moved along.

2- I do. I only miss a few if I'm having an overly busy day.

3- I love the humour, lots of the fanwall posts are very funny. As I don't live-watch I am always careful to skip spoilers but I don't mind reading and seeing non-spoilery stuff about shows I haven't watched yet, especially when they are meta jokes, puns, easter eggs and the like. I don't mind mild mid-show spoilers like kisses and such either.

And thanks to beanies who post their thoughts about certain shows, I know which shows to avoid and to never pick up (My Dearest).

Hmm...is this a theme? So far it sounds like a lot of readers go over because they don't live-watch and want to see what the live-watchers are saying? I mean I do that too...for other shows I'm not watching.

@mayhemf just put out a (potential) call for any Live-Watch Giffer (LWG?) to post gifs of the Moon Show--many of us are on the fence about that drama, but know that there's going to at least be some wonderful visuals.

(shh don't tell, but I feel this way VERY MUCH about My Lovely Demon...I don't think I'm gonna be able to do that one, but would watch the gifs with glee)

From my POV as a giffer, the experience of having folks respond to my work--whether they are also live-watching or not--is what encourages me to post more. I do believe that @ceciliedk is this way too...and perhaps all the giffers. So, even if you're not watching...I encourage engagement (which I know you do, @cayong03)!!

Most times when anyone even suggests the concept of a spoiler these days I start chanting, "S-PO-I-L-E-R! S-PO-I-L-E-R!" in my head. The "PO" being one "letter" is very important to the rythmic scansion 🤩

I interact with it primarily as a reader or commenter. Not that I never post to mine, but it’s pretty rare. I’ve been thinking about trying to post more, but I don’t want to post things there that already have a place on dramabeans (so that others can find it more easily) and since I’m not a big pic-poster (yet?) I don’t use it often in that way. Plus, it just takes time. Which I don’t always have, sadly.

As a reader I generally read in full the majority of the fanwall posts. I check it regularly and read through nearly everything unless the post is A. Suuuuper long. Then the first few lines really have to draw me in, or B. About a drama that I’m not caught up with/not watching but am planning to watch later and don’t want spoiled, or C. About something random that I’m not interested in. I think that’s about it?

My personal rules are pretty weird, especially given that I often don’t mind some spoilers in my drama-watching experience. So I’m drinking in every Twinkling Watermelon post even though I’m not watching because I’m interested to see people’s raw reactions to it as they go so that I can decide whether to watch it when it finishes. On the other hand, I’m reading most posts about My Dearest because I’m not planning on watching any time soon, but I’m following through weecaps and it’s fun to experience the high highs and low lows vicariously, and to see the whole drama in gifs.

As for what draws me there, it’s one part pretty pictures/gifs, and one part other community things that don’t have a different home on DB, like the bookclub or the daily year-end roundup that’s coming in December.

Huh! So what I'm hearing in this contribution (which is amazing and thank you!) is that--within the constraints of your non-drama-watching time (because watching dramas is ALL you do besides writing on DB, correct??? 😎)--you write to be heard and found in the places where you think you'll most easily be heard and found.

So, you write on the main posts for "traditional" commentary but then on the Fan Wall (usually in the comments, but sometimes as posts) for the things that aren't, for lack of a better word, "sponsored" by our DB Overlords, such as the image stuff, @eazal's year-end roundup and the bookclub...but you do read just about everything if you can?

Hahaha, yes! Of course, Seon-ha, aaaaaall of my time is taken up by dramas, either in their original or bean varieties. But I think you’ve summed it up well. The fanwall is the last thing I check usually, and probably also for that reason - that it kind of functions as an “everything else” for me. So I go read and comment on the BeanKeepers’ “official” posts first, and then come and hang out on the fanwall. But I do tend to check it every time I’m on DB.

1. I always go to the fan wall. I scroll down until I find the last post I read the day before or hours before.
2. I read everything except spoilers (something from a drama I plan to watch). Or post of c-dramas, j-dramas, because I don't know the dramas/actors.
3. Drama talk. I love reading beanies' reactions! And I love reading your different perspectives on the same drama/episode/actor. Even if I dropped the show, or I don't agree with something, I think it's important to read everything and keep it in mind. Sometimes it just opens my eyes or it helps me reflect on things.
Other times it's just fun! Even tho I'm not a fan of abs or shower scenes it's fun watching beanies post about a hot guy. Or the memes! Or random facts/thoughts. Beanies are cute and fun.
I also like when beanies post something personal. So we can support or feel happy for each other. Or just laugh together! And sometimes I get to fangirl about a non-kdrama related content/artist. I really love when I get to talk about movies and kpop. Hehe.

After reading the new posts in the Fan Wall, I read several pages of comments through the Comments section (usually when I wake up I see that there are eight or more "pages" of comments).
And sometimes I click on recaps or other discussions and read all the comments in a row :)

- Usually when I was directly sent link to some convo or post there since I'm trying to keep up with all that by myself, but simply can't. Too many interesting stuff at once))) So pls, everyone - if you want me not to miss something, tag me, this REALLY helps!

- Nowhere near close, unfortunately.

- I still prefer recaps/OT/WWWW threads because that's where everyone is and I don't need to monitor countless different pages at once to not miss most of discussions. Everything is fine as long as I'm into the theme - and I often is, my interests are pretty broad... or so I like to think^^ The fact that FW allows pics/gifs that regular comment section doesn't is a nice bonus as well. Forum I've previously used to hang out at allowed to post everything freely which I abused a great lot, retiring from there as top-10 most active poster or something, so it's been pretty hard to get used to strict DB comment policy.

- Sadly, my own fan wall remains boringly empty. Sorry to those few poor souls who followed me in hopes that I'll do something nice with it - I've been thinking about it on a regular basis, but you know me - once I start talking I just cannot shut up, so it's better to not touch this unexplored new area unless I have a clear vision in mind about what and why I want to say there. Pretty sure people already struggle enough with my wordy essays under recaps...

Nah, we love your essays! My fanwall is practically empty. I posted one thing there and it was long and personal and then it felt weird to post anything that wasn’t like that for a long time. I’m over that now, but usually the other parts of the site fulfill most of my posting needs.

I also didn’t know how to get to the fanwall when I first arrived here on DB. I knew you could look at individual peoples’ by clicking on their names, but it took me forever to click the Beanie tab up there for the first time.

No, I'm not in the mood to post really personal stuff anywhere on web nowadays. I used to long ago... but life was simpler to both live and make into words back then. Now I prefer keeping certain things to myself or it's gonna be a never-ending whine fest. Not a thrilling perspective at all. Some people I follow on sns do just that with zero restraint and it makes me cringe HARD.

Would love to post more about shows that aren't covered here, but WWWW thread kinda fills this hole, so I'm still at crossroads about that.

Beanie tab is still a mystery to me, honestly^^

I like to think of the content restrictions of DB as "creative constraints" 😉

I also don't want an edit feature for two reasons, (a) I'd just obsessively edit; (b) I don't want the internet baddies to have it.

It's just really weird to get used to a completely different (and way more restrictive) set of rules after like 12 years of a total web anarchy. I will eventually, I'm sure of it (esp if DB stops with all those random uncalled for changes *nasty glare*), but I'm still struggling for now. Once in a while I need to force myself to avoid adding a pic or a link to my ramblings because I know it may trigger the filter and it's just... not fun((( If anyone thinks my writing here is already colorful as it is, you just haven't seen the unrestrained version yet!

Yep, edit feature is a double-edged sword I'm not sure the site is truly ready for. Maybe just a strictly time-limited one? But that's probably an additional hassle...

Always wondered why we don't ever see romances with older or middle aged couples as leads in dramaland.

Its a once in a blue moon occurence where we see them, even then they usually throw in an idol or two in the mix to keep network executives happy

Perhaps such stories dont appeal to advertisers or the advertising demographic , which is a shame.

Korean has monthly brand ranking for both advertising and popularity which are heavily weighted by social media engagement (followers, likes, posts, shares, etc.) It also factors in a person's name in the meta-data (articles, stories, news feeds) as positive or negative. It tends to skew toward those active actors or idols with large social media presence. And it is a factor for future projects or CFs.

I've wondered how dramaland will handle so many of the most famous stars approaching their 40's. Will actors like Lee Min Ho (36 years old) no longer be the main character/love interest? Will the aging actors transition to playing fathers, villains and kings? i've wondered if we will start to see richer stories that center on older actors because the most famous are at that transitional age or will dramas continue to focus on the next big young star? I wonder if we will see more stories that center on characters that are divorced and given a second chance? Is anyone seeing more 2nd chance love stories? I've seen a few but not many. One of the issues I think is a concern is if kdramas are comfortable with love stories that include adults with children (divorced/widowed/single). In Liberation Diary, one main characters agreed to wait until her love interest's daughter was grown. If the character had been my friend, I would have told the character to find someone else. But, I suppose it all depends on if the stories/older actors make money.

I wrote about this earlier this year. Well known male actors who hit their 40s tend to have a boost or second wind in their careers while actresses in their 40s tend to fall off lead roles to more secondary or support ones.

Interesting. I found this article that addresses the kdrama casting practice of putting an older actress with a younger actor. One reason they give is that the writers are mostly female. They offer a comparison to Hollywood that has been mostly dominated by male stories (although changing). Generally, I just find k-dramas to be so youth directed/oriented that at times I'm finding myself a bit bored---https://www.forbes.com/sites/joanmacdonald/2020/04/01/why-older-actresses-are-often-cast-with-younger-actors-in-korean-dramas/?sh=37616f40445e

This is a Hollywood thing too. If an actress is not able to transition from ingenue to 'character roles', like evil corporate head, mother of a teenager or star ship commander, your career is sunk. Cameron Diaz left Hollywood because she couldn't transition to character roles. Jang Na-ra successfully made the transition.

I think Lee Min Ho will still get lead roles because he still has a big fanbase.

I think as long as they don't look like ajusshis, they can still be cast as love interests in romcoms.

I actually think this is already happening. I am seeing way more dramas about characters in their 40s than I remembering seeing when I first started watching dramas in 2010. I have no data to back this up but I have actually considered actually researching this when I have time, LOL. One of the benefits of all the new broadcasters and streaming services and just drama productions in general is that we are seeing a diversified drama landscape, in terms of genre, target audience, and much more.

I think dramaland is really struggling to cultivate talented young stars lately and I won’t be surprised if we see more and more productions geared towards veterans because of it.

I will take this opportunity to talk about some of my non-Korean obsessions...

Many of you know that my main obsession apart from kdramas is theatre (especially musicals). I recently have gotten really back into Shakespeare, and got a subscription for the Globe so I can watch filmed productions on streaming. I'm gonna start with my favorite, A Midsummer Night's Dream, tonight. I recently read a theory about it that I strongly believe and that makes the ending much more enjoyable for me, so I can't wait to view the story through that new interpretation!

Tangentially related to theatre (there are a lot of theatre actors in the cast), I'm also super excited because one of the few western shows I still love, The Gilded Age, is back on the air with new episodes on Sundays. There's a couple that I ship very hard and it's looking like they'll be a slow burn. Which is my favorite type of romance, but the wait is sooo difficult! And with western shows, there is always risk of cancellation before the story is completed. The show however does have other things that I love about it, so I can enjoy the ride.

Speaking of other period dramas that I love, I'm still waiting on Bridgerton season 3 to even have its air date announced. Can Netflix take pity on us and at least give us a date? I took off some days from work in December thinking it'd be then, but now the rumor is 2024 (and no one knows WHEN in 2024). Colin and Penelope are my favorites and I CANNOT wait for their story.

The second one (my favorite in the book series, not so much in the TV version) happens soon after but poor Penelope has to wait.

In my opinion it's something inevitable; it happens to anyone in any field of work. While I'm pretty sure those singers still have faithful listeners in small scale (the older we get the less we spend time and resources for those kind of things), but the only way they stay relevant in this time is by doing collab with younger singers. Speaking of which, Lee Sun Hee had a collab with Chanyeol EXO once. I'm sure there are many more instances.

K-pop is odd, you can be a veteran 15 years in the business and still just be thirty, because idols get recruited so young. To stay relevant you have to be REALLY REALLY good, untouchable. There does seem to be an upper age limit, though. A good number of idols transition into being actors. Some of the most respected actors have n idol or idol trainee past.

9
reply

Required fields are marked *

It seems you can age out of k-pop. Many first and second gen singers moved on to musical theater, variety shows or song production perhaps because their agencies were only geared toward promoting new (cheaper) groups.

Kpop singers often switch genres to keep going, especially amongst the trot crowd which apparently is a growing segment in the Korean music industry.

But if you cannot fill concert halls or sell a lot of albums, singers have to grind through the festival circuit (2-5 shows/day during spring through fall) for little money. So many singers tend to burn out.

It is just one that get much international exposure is K pop. I think (I can't say many or not many since I don't follow it closer either) there're older singers that are still relevant for domestic audience. And Lee Sung-cheol is still popular, since 20 something years ago, so many OSTs just listen to them like walking down memory lane of K drama addict 😂

For no particular reason, three recurring things I find odd in k-dramas:

Do Korean singers and actors actually have massive portraits of themselves hanging on their apartment walls? It seems almost obligatory in series with a character who's an actor. (E.g. You from another star, Find me in your memory, Moon in the day...)

Why are k-drama underwater scenes, especially the near drowning ones, so ridiculously unrealistic? Do Koreans generally not know how to swim and so they have no personal experience to compare with and don't realize how ridiculous such scenes are? I find them so jarring I struggle to suspend my disbelief.

So many series feature female characters that are some combination of plucky, courageous, bubbly, optimistic, cheerful, etc, but not particularly bright, and male leads that are brilliant, but standoffish and (seemingly) cold. As a teacher, I find this especially perplexing in high school dramas. In my experience, teenage girls generally tend to be more mature than their male fellow students, and therefore more likely to have their act together and work conscientiously. Is the portrayal we see simply the representation of commonly held Korean gender stereotypes, or is there some reality to it, in the sense that Korean boys (due to strong social pressure) feel compelled to work really hard so as to comply with the stereotypes?

I think of the huge pictures as something that was either gifted to them or they chose it from a fashion shoot. If you have access to top photographers, make up artists and top notch clothes why wouldn’t you keep a picture as a record as you know at some point these will become distant memories. They tend to live in big apartments or house so a small picture would look out of place.

A lot of normal people have make over pictures done for special occasions and have those pictures up in their house so why wouldn’t a famous person do the same.

And the one that smiles and has a lot of friends is more in the relaxed side about studying. If they have good grades and friends, they're probably faking their niceness. They probably hate everyone in secret. Hahahaha.

It's like the show doesn't want anyone to be "perfect", even tho people are more than grades and basic social skills. Being nice or friendly and being good at studying isn't everything.

But if I think of it with the gender stereotypes that you mentioned, it feels like they're trying to make this "dependable man" image for the boys.

I can hardly think of a drama with a main character who's an actor or idol that didn't feature one or more giant portraits of themselves - besides the ones you named they’re in Touch Your Heart, Queen Inhyun's Man, Sh**ting Stars, The Beauty Inside, Fanletter Please, Tomorrow … I’m probably forgetting some. I think it’s meant to reinforce that the character is a Really Big Star, the kind who would have done tons of publicity photos and ads and be recognizable to everyone.

There have been lots of ridiculous underwater rescue scenes in dramas, but the one in Moon in the Daymay be the most ridiculous yet - and that was before the supernatural element. I often find myself rolling my eyes, completely distracted by how unrealistic they are and how similar they are to each other.

Actually, I always wondered how a country surrounded by so much water can have so many people who can't swim.

The Kdrama opts for esthetics and drama instead of realistic drowning scene. I mean they always drown in a pond with max 2m of depth, but they go way deeper.

KDramas are like shojo mangas, the bubbly girl and the cold boy is an usual trope.

Swimming is actually not really a thing in Korea, from my (admittedly limited) experience. It's a combination of Korean culture being very 'must do my best to be like everyone else' and most Koreans rarely learn how to swim, so it turns into 'Other Koreans don't do it, so I won't either.' I lived in South Korea for a year back in 2012 and visited Busan right next to the ocean a handful of times. You would see lots of people at the beach but very few in the water, even if they were there in their swimsuits. Not sure why Koreans became so culturally uncomfortable with swimming, but there it is.

Hmmm, this would be surprising if it's true. I thought people learned to swim in school as part of gym classes or electives.

I've never once thought about how underwater scenes were done so I never thought about how realistic or unrealistic it is. I thought everyone knew how to swim.

I did some google searching just to make sure I wasn't making things up. From what the commentors have said, it looks like there is some emphasis being put on learning to swim now, but it sounds like it's a recent thing.

I think swimming in any urbanized country is a question of access and family value. When I was in Seoul, I did not see any signs for community swimming pools. I know in the Midwest suburbs, you did not have a public pool families would go into the city for the weekend to stay at a hotel with a pool. I think if you start something like swimming you are expected to be the best at it. I recall Song Ji Hyo state her mother was a national swimmer so she learned from her.

"I think if you start something like swimming you are expected to be the best at it."

You make a really important point that I think can be hard for foreigners to understand. Recreation doesn't work the same way in Korea as it does in the west. Koreans are often very intense about being really good at whatever it is they are doing. Even activities meant for fun. I took part in an in-person group while I was there made up of foreigners and Koreans, and a group of us went bowling once or twice. The foreigners didn't care how well we did, because performance wasn't the point. The point was to have fun. But the Koreans were very anxious about performing well, and they took it a lot more seriously than us. When they didn't throw the ball well, they would get frustrated and try harder their next turn.

Culturally, Koreans struggle a lot to just relax and enjoy things. There's this constant pressure to be good at whatever you are doing, even if it's just a hobby. Even if no one will ever even know about it. The foreigners in the group being so relaxed actually benefited the Koreans in some ways, because they could hang out with us and not feel like they had to impress us or something. We knew how to laugh at ourselves and let our hair down.

Again, I was in Korea in 2012, so things may have changed some since then, but I don't think they've changed so drastically that this isn't still present in the culture.

2

@OhSoEnthusiastic
I think you are right.
I don't think Korean school children get the same attention or acknowledgment that happens in the West. If you come home with a straight A report card, a parent does not celebrate or say "good job," because you were always expected to get straight A's. Then that carries over into everything else in life: work, social situations (drinking culture) and dating where no one is perfect.

1

As a counterpoint to my point above, the (not-drowning-after-all) underwater scene in Ep. 3 of castaway diva was actually done pretty well. OK, she would have had to jump rather far out to not hit the rocks, and looked awfully high up for an amateur to walk away unscathed, but once underwater the scene was far less unrealistic than most.

Beanies de mi corazón! 💚 I hope you had a great week!

I got a little scared this week thinking of the "one week curse".

If I don't watch the new episodes of a show within a week (or maybe 2 weeks), the show automatically goes on hold.
Some shows have been on hold for years just for the last episode or 2-4 episodes.

I have no idea why, but if I don't watch the episodes fast I just move on to another show. I can't go back. I get lazy. Even if I was in love with that show. I just can't press the play button.

Last week my trip was extended for a day, and then my cousin came home for my mom's birthday so I couldn't focus on my shows.

Thankfully, I'm not watching any show airing on the weekend. And the new shows or TW are dramas that I watch during the day.
But shows like The Kidnapping Day get a little tricky because I watch those shows really late. Like 2/3am in the morning.

I was sleeping really early these days, so I got scared. But today I thought "It's now or never!!" and I forced myself to start TKD's episode. I'm happy I did, I love this show and I would've feel like crap if it ended up on hold forever. Today (tomorrow) I'll watch the final episode and rest with a clear conscious. Hahaha.

The worst part of this curse is that it only happens with dramas I love.
It still hunts me that I have dramas like The Devil Judge, Signal, Mr Temporary or Uncle on hold.
I'm really good at finishing shows I hate, tho. What's wrong with me?? ☹️

Sometimes I have the show on hold for so long that the only way I finish it is by watching it from the beginning again. I'm pretty sure that's what I'm gonna have to do with Signal and 6FD one day. I don't remember that much. Thankfully I still remember everything about The Devil Judge and Ghost Doctor. I hope I finish them before my trash memory fails me. 🙃

Anyway, enjoy your weekend, beanies! XOXO

First episode of 'Castaway Diva' I get the impression 'famous idol' is loosely based on IU and her manager Hanteo. The country's most popular female soloist gets out of her agency contract and signs up to be the sole star in a new agency started by her manager. Sound at all familiar?

Does anyone else wonder if there is a kdrama writers conspiracy? It is so eerie how so many shows airing closely in time have the same themes. Right now we seem to be in a timeslip one and something with past lives (Joseon or later era) and present lives. Last time it was lawyers. Is the next one doctors again or are we going with fantasy vigilantes?

I think it's just the trends.
Everything is like that. Fashion, music, dramas, etc.

You've noticed that sometimes the MLs of the shows you're watching wear the same clothes? I think that happened to me in 2016 or 2017. I was watching three different dramas and two MLs and one FL wore the same shirt.
I think that's what happens with dramas. A genre or trope becomes the trend, and like that shirt, you start seeing everywhere. LOL

it's terrible, isn't it? even if the drama's good, I find it hard to take an actor with a bowl haircut or perm seriously. for example, the male lead in 365 Repeat the Year. he was great, the story was great, but because of his perm, I couldn't completely fall in love with an otherwise solid drama.

the question is how do the writers for different dramas all write on similar themes at around the same time? do they all talk amongst themselves? how does it work?

2

Required fields are marked *

They don't have to talk to each other, they just have to know the trend of the season and maybe follow some cliches. That's why some of them feel the same.

That's why I made the comparison with fashion and stuff like that.
Just like Pantone already has the trending color of 2024, maybe writers already know the trend of 2024 for dramas. That's what I mean.

Well, this is just what I think. I don't know since I'm not a drama writer. Maybe they do talk among themselves to decide the trend, hahaha. I just hope the trend for next year is romcom or slice of life. 🤭

Writers may have the first script draft, but it is the production company, network and director that apply their vision into the final script. And the production company has to sell the show so it is keen on copycatting on what was popular in order to appease the network.

Which stalker, I mean, gumiho story do you hat— like the most: Roomie gumiho VS girlfriend gumiho

Female centered dramas/sismance
Be Melodramatic VS 20th Century Boy and Girl

Random stuff help you time travel to solve murder cases:
Life on Mars VS Signal VS Tunnel

What's creepier high school teacher falling in love with her student or psychiatrist falling in love with his patient: Big VS Heart to Heart

Infidelity:
Love Affairs in the Afternoon VS On the Way to the Airport

FL Randomly goes blind because makjangs:
Sad Love Story VS Stairway to Heaven

Broken people falling in love and helping heal each other: You're My Spring VS Mad For Each Other

Ghosts fixing the living characters' lives: Hello Mama VS Oh My Ghostess

Law dramas aren't boring: The Devil Judge VS Law School

Office romance (aka. falling in love with the secretary): Jugglers VS WWWSK VS SLOMSecretary

A few stray thoughts kicking around my sleepy weekend brain:

1. I see some conversations here about older actors/actresses and just wanted to do a PSA that Gwenchanoona's page on Facebook is having their Noona November month featuring K-Drama actresses aged 30 and up.

Last month they had Oppa October for Oppas who are aged 35 and up.

So if y'all are up for some eye candy and great K-Drama bios, head on over there *grin*

2. Speaking of FB, I kept getting hit with clips from MY DEAREST featuring Namgoong Min at his Sageuk sexiest.

Unfortunately for me, MY DEAREST isn't streaming on any of the streamers I have access to (and Viki is too expensive in my region), so I started with his backlist.

Watching HOT STOVE LEAGUE and... Oh WOW!

3. Speaking of Namgoong Min, I noticed that Kim Dong-Wook is almost his twin. Huh.

However for the Open Thread , where Beanies often pose questions that are answered in replies, the Most Recent setting alters the object of a thread into a tangled mess.
This morning I tried to choose the "All Comments" option so I could read the call and response in proper order but it would not load that way. I ended up scrolling to the end and reading in numerical reverse order.
Could the DB moderators consider suspending the Most Recent default for the Open Thread so we Beanies can enjoy each other's random thoughts and comments?

As a rule, major producers determine actors’ fees based on their popularity rather than their talent, as big-name stars usually mean more viewers and higher ticket sales. If actors were paid according to their talent, then Gary Oldman would be earning a helluva lot more than Tom Cruise. As Tom himself famously said, “Show me the money!”
