Currently in the beginning of a Midwestern Blizzard. Forecast for almost a foot of snow.

Last year we had the terrible “ghost babies” stories from South Korea. This week the Korean Herald reported on another bad baby case:

South Korean prosecutors requested a three-year prison term from the court for a 25-year-old woman, Kim, was accused of purchasing a 27-year-old woman's newly born daughter for 980,000 won ($750) on Aug. 24, 2019, and selling her to a 53-year-old woman surnamed Oh for 3 million won just two hours later. The 27-year-old woman had written on the internet about her unwanted pregnancy, which Kim saw and offered to buy the baby. After Oh bought the baby from Kim, she abandoned her within a month of the purchase. The baby was found by authorities and was safely adopted by another family.

All three women have been indicted for violating Article 17 of the Child Welfare Act that bans the financial transaction of a child. In a final testimony at the hearing, Kim said the reason for her actions was that she was young and immature, and pledged never to do it again. Her lawyer said her client thought it would be better for the baby to be raised in a different environment, than to be raised by a parent who couldn't take care of a child. But an investigation found that Kim is a repeat offender, having been sentenced to a suspended jail term under the same charges in October 2022.

What the what?! How could the crowd crush/crowd surge have been related to drug use?!

If anything, I would buy the "the president changed his residence/office plus there were protests that day so the police resources were allocated to them leading to a severe lack of preparation and access to help" reasoning over drug use.

I am just so surprised that was given as a potential reason why the surge happened. How does that even work? Are they saying so many people were on drugs, they got stuck in a tiny alley and then more people came and got stuck along with them?

I think not only the treatment of famous people needs to change, but there also needs to be MAJOR changes to societal views and stigma around substance use. It needs to be viewed under a public health lens and not a morality lens.

It’s really f-cked up when fans love a character redemption story in their dramas, but condemn it when it happens in real life.

This is a timely collective which as @vienibenmio said, can hopefully spark a much wider discussion about the despair that leads people to take their own lives, how Governments should implement short-term and long-term policies to address the underlying causes, the role of unethical media orgs and attention-seekers, and stem the tide of such losses.
Again, it reminds me of how brutal the cost of such modernisation and economic growth has been in SK. The ‘miracle on the Han’ will continue to have a long tail of social, economic and political ramifications.

Day 12 in K dramaland: we are finally watching the last episodes of the 2023 dramas and new ones are starting to drop. I am so looking forward to having a busy week of dramas to bring a smile to my face every day, it feels like it’s been a long wait for those days to return.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

Same to you @reply1988. I hope you have a great year of dramas.
One of the changes to my viewing habits particularly in the last year is that I am less inclined to go back and try to catch up on episodes of dramas that wound up on the sidelines for whatever reason. Sometimes it is because of traveling. More recently I got sucked into Cdramaland with: A JOURNEY TO LOVE ( 40 eps), THE HOPE (30 eps), THE LONELY WARRIOR (24 eps) and THE LONG SEASON (only12 eps.)
I had pretty much decided after 4 episodes that SAMDAL-RI would be a drop but I was 10 episodes into the sageuk GKW when I veered off. I am inclined to let GKW go as a drop because I am definitely watching KNIGHT FLOWER (Viki) which begins airing today. I really was looking forward to Jang Dong-yoon in SAND and may try to work that in. JDY had a fantastic year in 2023.

JDY is indeed great in Like Flowers in Sand. There's a scene in episode 8 where his expressions are indescribably wonderful and smile-inducing - no spoilers, but it's been worth watching the entire series just for that moment.

I hope it's a busy year in dramaland for all of us, with something for everyone - and fewer murderers. There are other kinds of mysteries, after all.

JDY is giving such an amazing performance in Like Flowers in the Sand. I think his performance is the best one I have seen in a long time--that includes the ones largely touted like the actors in My Dearest and The Red Sleeve. There is no flash, no visible trying, no big angsty scenes--JDY just seems to be Baek Du, an incredible and different character whose charm just sneaks up on you and then BAM, he's embedded deeply in your heart. Baek Du and JDY for the win.

FLS in general and JDY’s performance in particular has been my happy and empathetic place. So far, I’ve loved it so much and can’t get enough. I’ve laughed a lot and have felt weepy a few times. It has been such a gift. I hope it doesn’t go bonkers and self-destruct.

3

@elinor, and @pynyc Gum Shoe thanks for the encouragement to get to SAND.
I have been a fan of Jang Dong-yoon since seeing him in his first drama: JTBC’s SOLOMON’S PERJURY (2016) which I watched in 2017. When JDY appeared as a high school student in SP in 2016 he was already a military veteran having completed his military service in Feb. of 2014 while he was still 21 years old.
I haven’t seen all his dramas but I have enjoyed his performances in tvN’s A POEM A DAY (2018), OCN’s SEARCH (2020) and last year in KBS’s OASIS and Netflix’s DAILY DOSE OF SUNSHINE.
His physicality (ie fighting ability) in OASIS was outstanding. I know OASIS with the love triangle was not everyone’s cup of tea but I loved it. JDY is great with an ensemble cast and in OASIS he was a natural with the guys in his gang and the elder conmen/woman. I don’t think it is only acting. I think the actors he works with are naturally drawn to him. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that that is currently the case in SAND.
What he had to content with over the JOSEON EXORCIST (2021) debacle still irritates me.

I had to retrospectively learn about the JE debacle as you rightly called it. Given the highly punitive nature of such actions, it is great and to JDY’s credit that his future prospects were not harmed (more). I have no problem with sexual harassers and abusers, rapists, bullies, scammers, and other violent people being outed and held accountable but in reality, many of such people are shielded by institutional mechanisms and powerful individuals. The fact that Lee Kyungyoung still gets all of those roles (be it evil ones) and gets paid is a travesty when a blameless actor cops serious flack and loses paid work. I just have to remind myself how long it took for Weinstein to be exposed. There are so many more predatory men like him still working, getting enriched and wielding influence.

4

@dncingemma, If you want to read something really sad is Jang Dong-yoon’s letter of apology after the JE cancellation. (It is easy to access.) He was not a JE producer, director, set designer, costume designer or anything else but an actor reading his lines yet he felt it necessary to personally apologize. Disgraceful.

Then we can gonback further post production of A POEM A DAY where the director dissed JDY in an interview. That didn’t go unnoticed here in DB since APAD was a local favorite.
With that background I was delighted for Jang Dong-yoon’s success in 2023.

7

From your lips to goddess’ ears. I can cope with sadness, grief and societal ills in good KDs but serial killers, a big nope. They are not the real villains anyway. But the actual corporate, governmental and institutional villains of the real world are largely untouchable so that’s why we get screaming chaebols, prosecutors and politicians who are always the bad apples. The system continues to survive and thrive.

@marcusnyc20: Thank you for mentioning that. I’ve no self-protection instinct so will read it and raise my high BP further. What a disgrace indeed. Even though my Korean language studies have slowly introduced me to the importance of public contrition, I still find this kind of blame allocation difficult to comprehend.
And, how awful about that public dissing. I’m sorry for bugging you about this but do you remember why? I’ve wanted to see APAD for a while now and cannot access it. You all in North America are really lucky.
I’m glad you and other Beanies liked APAD. I love good poetry.

2

@dncingemma, Sorry for the delay. I probably should not have mentioned that interview from APAD’s Director Han Sang-jae and let it go.
(Here is the gist of it as I remember it (and my memory is probably as shoddy as the next person.) Back in the day one of our beanies (DB name: fan) would post translations of articles relating to kdramas in Open Thread. Fan posted a translation of an interview that APAD’s Director Han had given. He talked about how the plot changed once APAD started airing because the public wanted the love line to go another way than originally planned. (That meant that JDY’s Min-ho was out and Lee Joon-hyuk’s Dr. Ye was in.) It is too difficult to try to find the text here in DB but if you want to see the pertinent text that annoyed some of us you can go to the comments below. The 22nd comment copied part of DB fan’s translation. If you read it slowly you will get the idea:
https://bitchesoverdramas.com/2018/05/15/poem-a-day-crap-today-%F0%9F%92%A9/

Lol and that is the end of it.

this guy comes, asks for a bunch of old newspapers and marks them. he only marks the date under sudokus. we were wondering what is the deal... perhaps he is a sudoku creator and checks whether they print it? but then he should write in his notebook, not the paper.

so weird.
not as weird as the guy who sends himself an email from one library computer, logs out and goes to read the email in another computer. we have a character called muffler in a childrens´ book, who sends itself letters on paper, and then collects them in another town and reads them while crtying. Is this patron re-enactor...

also, we have a new plan of action during fire (it is real). In case of fire we have to yell "Fire! Fire!" - but don´t create panic. But it does saysto "proclaim in a loud voice". im in a Monty Python movie....

Many years ago, I purchased the most wonderful fire alarm at an auction. It consists of a piece of sheet metal with two flat strips of metal with a wooden ball on the end . The sheet metal and the clacker strips meet in a wooden handle. When you shake it , the clackers clack on the sheet metal and produce an ear piercing bell sound, no electronics needed.
It is Japanese , I have no idea how old it is.
My wife says “We don’t need that”, Hah ! I do ! , say I “.
The sound it produces would wake the dead .

there was one woman who asked to use "balcony room" ( a room upstaris that has an opening to the main ) and one point colleagues smelled food. she set up a portable stove and was making soup. with onions.

and in the music department we have an X Box and kids come to play, one time this 9 year old tells us he killed his friend and we all freeze. turned out, inside the game, they wanted to restart the game but it didnt or something

@redfox I really enjoy your library anecdotes.

one more tidbit: a patron just arrived that always reminds me of the alien in MIB that wears the skin of some southern farmer: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/men-in-black/images/6/69/Edgar-human_SS_01.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/200?cb=20120521120404
I have nicknamed this guy Edgar.
and his wife kind of also looks like that... so im thinking calling her The Mother Alien.
They both come and play the same internet game and never turn off the sound so its always "Trin-trin-trin-trin-trinn!" when either is here. then we say they are calling their spaceship.
am i very mean to patrons?

Looking back, 2023 was a really weak year for Asian dramaland as a whole, however i do think C-dramaland kind of won the year.

Three Body
Meet Yourself
Hi Venus
I Am Nobody
Mysterious Lotus Casebook
Oh No, Here Comes Trouble
The Starry Love

CDramas have always had a quanity over quality problem, but the fact that all these came out in a single year is promising, especially since J and K dramas dropped the ball and started floundering, despite higher budgets, foreign investments and international support

Agree 100%.

Dramaland is oversaturated, attention spans are getting shorter and shorter, platforms are constantly churning out content to feed a beast that they created.

Its tough to stand out in a market like that.

My issue with C-dramas is that they're SO long. I watched Lighter and Princess because people kept talking it up so much, and I had to really force myself to finish it. It burnt me out, honestly.

8

Required fields are marked *

I feel like it's mostly the problem with modern shows which are always needlessly long with tons of fillers and character/plotlines literally no one cares about. Not to say that historical ones are 100% faultless in that regard, but they usually have better substance-length ratio in comparison.

7
reply

Required fields are marked *

I watched one which I thought would have been great if it was shorter because they worked through the same issue on three different occasions just to pad out the episodes. I like the new focus to make dramas shorter; the two twelve episode dramas I watched were Fake it til you make it and Remembrance of things past both were very well paced with no filler at all.

Required fields are marked *

I've said this too many times on Dramabeans before, and I hate to sound like a self-righteous nag but I do think that discussion of cdramas should take in account that they are heavily censored by an authoritarian government.

One of my best friends is a Chinese American born in China, and after a recent visit he says that among his intellectual friends, the fear of saying the wrong thing in public and getting a visit from the police is as strong as he's seen it.

So even in c-dramas that might be trying to smuggle in an anti-government message, pro-freedom of speech message (and I don't think that happens too often in rom-coms, my favorite genre) you have to really pay attention to see it, whereas there will be a lot of pro-authoritarian politics easily visible. Plus I well know that if any star or director would protest any social or government policy, (as is Bong Joon Ho, above) they would suddenly "disappear." Also, I can't help thinking what happened to Hong Kong, once a vibrant film hub when China took over and repressed all artistic freedom, and what would happen to Taiwan shows and films if China takes control. They would also disappear.

I would never judge anyone based on the politics of consumerism. I myself own a lot of products manufactured in China, and boycotts often end up punishing the people and workers rather than the government. But still, I think its important to acknowledge the censorship issue.

authoritarian regimes always has such an, in the worst meaning of the word, petty bourgeois taste. When the Russian revolution was ongoing, they had the best audaciest, new artist, but as soon as the new government took hold, it all just had to be something that would look nice over the sofa, more or less. Or the same, but very, very sturdy and fitting for a statue the size of a house.

3
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

But that's the easiest and surest way to find a good read out there tho. Was the author ever hunted by government? Might be worth some attention. Did time for political reasons? Almost certainly a great talent. Died a mysterious untimely death with higher ups possibly being involved? Look no further, you've found THE pinnacle of local classics! Bonus points if this particular work of theirs was officially banned from printing and had to be distributed by other means.

6
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

And - I don't wabt to be taken the wrong way because I definitely would rather have everybody live their most convenient, lazy lives without having any reason to protest ... but like you can sometimes find the most sublime descriptions of homosexuality and queerness in the corners of very have-to-be-straight shows, so there is beautiful, sublime and/or urgent poetry to be found in the protest that is written with invisible ink in the margins of permitted works.

1

Just ignoring for a moment the ethical issues around supporting the regime because, frankly, as The Good Place told us, it's almost impossible to make an ethical decision in this modern world, the censorship means that a lot of c-dramas are written to a formula and are inherently lightweight. I find them generally shallow, but then the wave of conservatism in Korea isn't helping there either so it's an expanding problem.

Three Body was at least an attempt to faithfully render the book, I certainly think it's probably better than the Netflix adaptation will be. But it was still too long and too padded.

Long story short, I find it hard to watch c-dramas at the moment. The idea that anyone involved could be imprisoned for the smallest thing at any stage puts me off but what then gets rendered on screen is also shallow and often boring.

6
reply

Required fields are marked *

This has been grating on my mind. The fact that people won't even watch shows and form their own opinions anymore. I think it's partly that I feel kinda sensitive that it seems like alot of the shows that I like, enjoy, or look forward to are just constantly mired in criticism. Fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion but then it is just the same repetitive opinions, sometimes without even watching for themselves.

I saw a video about how with the rise of social media, people have become even more reliant on the words of folks in their social circle vs professional critics. So what I'm saying isn't just something that happens here but it's what I'm referring to.

I watched a video where Seo In Guk, Kim Ji Hoon, and Kim Jae Wook were talking about different things and Jae Wook not knowing about some new idol group member was so endearing to me haha. But it was also mentioned how Ji Hoon & Jae Wook are "pioneers" for men rocking the long hair look. I thought the mane of glory thing was just a thing here, I didn't know it was *actually* a thing. I knew Jae Wook reminded me of his Coffee Prince days with his hair pulled back and it just felt so right haha. Nice to know I wasn't alone in thinking that.

Ji Hoon mentioned how his character was an invention for the drama and initially he didn't know how to play it because his character had no clear beginning & end and the connection with all the other characters seemed forced plus he turned murderous out of nowhere (during the 1st part). It reminded me of how people here commented on that same thing.

Also they kept acknowledging the sexiness and handsomeness amongst them haha

I try not to judge the cuisines of other cultures and faiths according to what the average American considers “normal”—after all, Hindus are offended by eating beef; Muslims and Jews shun pork; horse meat can still be found on the menu in China, France, Kazakhstan, and other countries; insects are part of the diet in many cultures in Asia, Africa, and Latin America; and some people find it unethical to kill and eat animals at all—but I can’t help but find eating dog meat an abhorrent practice.

I just looked it up to confirm, but dogs were the first animal to be domesticated. At least 15K years ago. That means humans have evolved as well as the co-dependent bond with canines (hunting, protection, warmth and food) has grown stronger. Which is why the thought of eating dog meat is more repugnant to humans than most other species.

Sheep, cats, chickens, etc. followed about 3-5 thousand years later. And, except for cats, they aren't as soft and cuddly. 😊

A little rant. Why does (almost) every drama I am watching have a murder mystery plot (I am looking at you My Demon, My Man Is Cupid, Like Flowers in Sand)? And the other one 'Welcome to Samdal-ri' can get pretty sad and heart-wrenching, especially as I am in the trenches of a gut-wrenching heartbreak. I am in the mood for distraction and lightness, just pure fluff, but alas.

Ah! I'm so sorry about your heartbreak. It seems trite to say but it will get better. Pure fluff ... seems were all out of that but maybe some older dramas. A Love So Beautiful or Still 17 perhaps?

Oh! BTW I totally meant the K-drama on Netflix but you can also check out the original C-drama of the same name.

Yes older dramas that you know the outcome will be the best option. Most will have some sort of noble idiocy or drama.
Business proposal
Shooting stars
Soundtrack #1
Shopaholic Louis

lol, but both Business Proposal and Shooting Stars came to mind as nice, engaging dramas. They are two the 1st kdramas I ever watched when they first aired (less than 2 years ago!) and realized recently that they just don't make them like in the olden days anymore. 🤣🤣🤣

Cackling at noble idiocy 😅! That never seems to be in short supply. There's actually plenty you've mentioned that I have never watched so I'll have plenty to occupy me. Thank youu

Would a virtual hug from a stranger make a difference? I know it is unlikely but I have opened my arms in real life and am pretending to give you a big firm hug. I’m a firm hugger of those whom I love in RL and I hope you’ve people that you can share your heartbreak and get some comfort via hugs or other means.

I'm all about Fluff and lightness. I just finished- 10 minutes ago- Backstreet Rookie. Just some good clean happy fun. So much cute chemistry. Have you seen Attorney Woo- drama with a feel-good ending every week. King The Land was all love and smiles and really no drama. I agree completely on shooting stars!!! If you need more ler me know its my specialty💜

Anyone know anything about Lee Min Ho's next drama. It was supposed be out last year? It's about a Dr in Space? For being so popular he is not in a lot of shows. Thanks

Excellent timing indeed as hopefully you wont need to wait too long for part two. The drama has all the time lines running alongside each other the book does it in chronological order. I really loved the book which helped me make sense of the drama.

Lee Min-ho is likely to have two dramas releasing in 2024. When the Stars Gossip (or Ask the Stars) where he plays a gynecologist who is a space tourist, as mentioned by you. Gong Hyo-jin plays the astronaut. 😊 Then there is Pachinko Season 2. The release dates of the two dramas have not been announced as yet.

9TAILEDFOX'S MINI RANT OF THE WEEK:

1. WHY O' WHY DO ALL EMERGENCIES HAPPEN AND PEOPLE COME PILING IN WITH ISSUES THE WEEK BEFORE I'M SUPPOSED TO GO ON SABBATICAL? WHY?!

2. Insomnia. Bloody insomnia. Either that or I have permanently turned into a night owl who goes to bed at 3.00am...

3. No K-Dramas for me this week as I race to finish wrapping up things at work before - yep, you guessed it - I go on sabbatical.

I'll be catching up with MY DEMON, WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI and LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND next week. When there are no two dozen people clamouring for my attention at work.

4. T-minus 10 weeks to seeing Woosung Oppa and the rest of The Rose Oppas LIVE!

I ordered a pair of Loop earplugs for concerts (I want to hear Woosung Oppa sing, not be deafened by him) and might have found some white rose hair ornaments to wear to the concert...

I hope all goes well with the wrapping up process. Take care of yourself as the lurgies always attack when you have periods of high stress. I hope the Sabbatical and concert go well.

Thanks. Maybe my insomnia will go away as well once I'm on sabbatical. It's highly irritating but I did discover that between 11pm - 3am it's really, REALLY quiet and I can focus on work so... huh.

It's gonna be K-Drama binge time once my sabbatical kicks in. All I'm going to do is catch up with rest/sleep and the shows I'm live-watching. Well, at least for the first 2 weeks.

2024 started off so busy, I've been swamped! Didn't get around to finishing the *MoOnies* (but hey, the Oscars are in March, so I have time LOL), haven't started anything new except for *Gyeongseong creature* and I'm halfway thru ep3! Haven't finished *Park's marriage contract* either, no time, no time!
Gahhhhhhh I miss my beanies!!!
