Cute Under the Influence
Effing Hilarious, poor sincere Kim Soo-hyun being treated terribly by his wife and the whole gang of in-laws, but also being so epically wailingly pathetic, WAAAAAH parodying his own beauty and status as K-idol.

I imagined they would have taken that “cute-while-drunk” idea from discussions on some fan site and probably also excitedly giffed moment from other shows with him. I shortly googled (or, duck duck went) and lo and behold (I mean, I didn’t gif this:

It’s obvious that he and his wife both long for what they had, and both are terribly angry, that we will get one H— of a fight, with lies: (like, she is def. not dying. He is staying with her because you do that as a decent person in that situation, but also, it’s much better than having to “backstab” that grand-FIL we saw, and he can avoid divorce “scandal”)
Misunderstandings: (She will think he is only staying for the money, and probably that anti-matchmaker has told her some lie about him, too, or she wrote him out of her will because her family set is a condition), ignoble idiocy (trying to pretend to have no feelings to save face) and also noble idiocy (I don’t know how or why yet. But that family keeping others hostage sounds quite likely).
Maybe she expected him to stand up to her family, and he didn’t originally ofr her sake. Maybe the other Sons-in-Laws are obedient because of money. Maybe there will be a SIL rebellion. And also, how are the daughters-in-law doing in that family?
Well, we’ll learn along the way.
But she is being very unreasonable at work. Probably that is how it runs in the family, super *exaggerating “bad” things about others and taking hard measures, but at least that should be something he and she could talk about.
*I mean: Being in the 20% bottom is not “making no money” – there will always be some businesses making less than others. And “leaving” is not “backstabbing”. Her family is cutting people off or taking revenge for things that are not offensive at all. And also, those two examples show that they expect an extreme loyalty and is not showing any loyalty back. Her loyalty is shown in secrecy, but otherwise she is brought up to have no people skills at all.
That was what originally made him want to protect her; he could see she would never succeed in any job, being so clueless about basic politeness and respect. Maybe she really wanted to be saved, hoping he would kill the dragon an take her away to live off his education and the “almost 35” cows.
And her boss and boss’es boss are her father and grandfather. And she can’t get a job somewhere else because she cannot hold a position even as an intern.
He, on the other hand, should be able to work somewhere else, except that is considered “backstabbing” by the Pater Familiae.
Deconstructing Cuteness
They are really not utilizing Soo-hyun’s Swoon-hyunness, or rather, they use it only for deconstruction and really a kind of horror comedy.

Remember how he told his friend in It’s Okay not to be Okay that he was constantly controlling his facial expression because his brother would always be watching him – and most likely have a panic attack if he didn’t look happy?
This is giffed from the opening sequence (i.e. shortened, because the whole opening shows his control and restraint) where we, as audience, hadn’t been told that yet, and I at least didn’t give too much weight to these windows and mirrors.

That same skillset is used now in a way were we do not feel sorry for him, and where none of his facial expressions are nice. And also, it’s reversed in that he needs to look sad now.
Falling
I assume he is falling for fear here. We can understand from his view why he would want to end it without having to take the initiative. But it’s a bit much to have so little compassion with a young woman soon to die. Except she shows no compassion with herself.
As she says, her family will scramble for her position “Over My Dead Body” … Well, yes …

The Bathroom
I know people go to the bathroom to gossip, and that a good amount of backstabbing happens there, not always preceded by a careful look around or check for feet under the doors, …
But still, isn’t it a bit much to talk loudly about secret and embarrassing feelings at in a bathroom with a lot ot stalls, during a party? Or is it just me?

Apparently, his family is exactly as horrible as hers, only with less power.
But here’s to Kim Soo-hyun looking cute. He really does look like someone who bubbles with hope and love, doesn’t he?

Maybe, taking on these roles where he looks so terrible some of the time will make it possible to get roles where they don’t expect so much surgery and botox? Wouldn’t it be nice to see a few more wrinkles here, se how they contribute to sorrow, anger, and love?
His friend says that in ‘It’s Okay Not To Be Okay’, but that is about his resting face. And the answer is that thing about always being under control because of his brother.
