Hiya. Sorry for the late reply. I don’t quite know how to explain it without seeming like I am rambling, but I don’t quite understand this show.
The hyung is a man with some level of developmental/learning disabilities, and his brother works as a psychiatric nursing assistant. Part of getting the hyung to live as independent a life as he can is giving him the tools to navigate the world – like figuring out his triggers and teaching him to avoid them/ devising ways to avoid them. We *know* hyung does not always act in a manner that’s socially appropriate, especially when he’s excited/has sensory overload. So a standard strategy for that would be having someone *with* him in those scenario (not standing somewhere afar off) – either to defuse/deescalare a situation that comes up/ to remind him to keep excitement in check. What’s his name works in psychiatry so by now, I expect him to KNOW this. So WHYYYYYYY would you take your brother out into a triggering scenario and then sit afar off? If the friend had done that fine, but I don’t expect a psychiatry nurse assistant to do this. It’s things like that which throw me off. It doesn’t make any sense. (It moves the plot along sure, but it’s not organic that way. 🤷🏾♀️)
Sorry for the late reply.
You know, this a fair critique.
It didn’t bother me so much at the time I think because she just escalated the situation even farther thus drawing my attention away from it lol, and I guess I saw it showing that it was mistake anyway, that GT left him? but *shrugs*
I don’t know enough about the subject matter to try and argue it though haha.
IT’S OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY, ep 1. I don’t quite understand. Seo Ye-ji’s character goes through life being a nasty person, and…..we’re supposed to feel sorry for her?
All the promotional materials said her character has antisocial personality disorder, which is why she has no filter/says and does whatever she feels like. I don’t necessarily think we need to feel sorry for her, but I do think that part of her character journey is learning empathy.
Having antisocial personality disorder isn’t the same thing as being a nasty person. So if that’s what they mean to portray, at least in this beginning episode, they’ve failed.
Preliminary thoughts on the grist two episodes of THE KING: ETERNAL MONARCH
1. Lee Min-ho looks good.
2. The parallel world is more interesting than the real world.
3. Villain is uninteresting.
U recently finished watching the Jdorama I DON’T LOVE YOU YET. Now my 2nd fave jdorama of all time. Shirasu Jin and Adachi Rika did an excellent job, and I found their faces so compelling to look at ❤
HOTEL DEL LUNA ep 3 &4: Yeo Jin-gu is still miscast, and the gaps in IU\’S acting skill are becoming more apparent. And the plot needs to start moving. Sigh.
the novelty of a thousand+ year old person still behaving like a petulant child for four episodes grates quickly and IU doesn’t have the skill to make me want to wait it out. YJG is just there, out on a lurch like always. They need to start working on the back story Pronto.
So. DR. JOHN. Sigh. I\’ll just resign myself to the fact that Koreans refuse to consult any medical people for med dramas or that Korean medicine is a different world. 🙄🙄🙄.
The whole setup is bogus.
(I wish michykdrama was still on here. She is an anesthesiologist and can explain better)
1. Anesthesiologists do not perform surgeries. Or diagnose illnesses (well certainly not the way Dr John and the Dr. Whats-her-name are doing). They also don’t deal with pain in the way the synopsis is suggesting. They keep people unconscious and without pain during surgery or manage ICUs (where many patients are kept under heavy sedation). Patients with chronic pain wouldn’t be seeing the anesthesiologist at the hospital – since their problems would most likely not be surgical, and most importantly, they’re awake and not needing to be in the ICU.
2. Anesthesiology is a surgical discipline (even though they aren’t surgeons), not a medical one. You wouldn’t hire an anesthesiologist to be acting as a GP/family/physician/diagnose simple ailments in a prison. That’s not their job or their area of expertise. Especially the way medicine residencies are run in America, Asia, and most of Europe. They simply wouldn’t be competent at it/allowed to do it, because they can’t.
3. Anesthesiologists DO NOT perform surgeries. They are required in surgeries, to keep the patient unconscious and free from pain. It can be very dramatic – they are the ones called upon to keep the patient alive when they begin to die on the surgical table, but NOT because of a bleed. A bleeding patient requires a surgeon to find and stop the cause of the bleeding. Not the anesthesiologist.
4. I’m not sure about the mystery surrounding Dr. whats-her-name and why she is so jittery around hospitals, but if her license has been suspended (which is what i suspect), then she shouldn’t be able to work anywhere, not even in a prison.
5. Her behavior around human error in medicine…..lol. No one can become a doctor who thinks or behaves like that. You simply can’t because you wouldn’t be able to work. And for someone who works in surgery/critical care…..its stupid, unrealistic, and will keep you from doing your job. You can’t think like that (I guess that’s why she’s having a hard time at her job). That’s just the first episode.
So yeah. I spent my time yelling at the screen in frustration. I don’t know if I can watch the second. But we are gonna give it a try because we love Ji Sung.
If I would have read the description of doctor john, I would have never even started this show, lol!
1 You are completely right but to shows defense, other than Ji Sung stitching himself up and then doing standard genius stuff and also being able to do better job GP (cue eye roll), the lead girl did nothing… absolutely nothing ….
2. No I have no idea how they came up with this plot, apparently its a Japanese novel and I was saved from it since I can’t read it, lol!
3. I mean what can I say,… ,
5. The lady needs to find a new job, her IQ is too low to be doctor and EQ too low to stand being a doctor.
What pissed me off was how much misconception the writer had about doctors :
The female lead said “She does not deserve happiness she gets from saving some ones life” … and this was really off putting, she considers herself almighty that she can save people’s life and derive happiness from it… I felt nobody told her to be more thankful instead that she had skills enough to do that and be a better doctor in case not and this is why is a doctor trash… and can’t do anything now…
4. No idea, I thought so too, but I think she is on leave ….
——-
If this was not enough to make you drop it and JiSung is the still holding you, then ep 2 will even test that…
Ji Sung decides to give an almost full length speech when a patient needed to be transported to hospital and was shaking from breathlessness. But guess what drama is more important…
I don’t think I can watch it anymore..
Also, for those who continued watching , is ARTHDAL CHRONICLES worth picking back up? I have a lot of time on my hands in these next few weeks, and I\’m wondering if the show is worth a second chance.
It picks up in ep 7 and things start to come together, so I say yes. The last third of the drama isn’t coming until September though so we’re left hanging after ep 12.
So Hotel del Luna ep 1&2: I like the plot so far. IU is acting well, even though there a a few obvious gaps in her skill. Yeo Jin-gu otoh, is NOT acting well at all. Nope nope nope.
Kwak Dong Yeon and Lee Jae Wook the most recent puppy find are around YJG’s age.
I haven’t watched Hotel Del Luna but in My Absolute Boyfriend, it’s more like character was childlike. For Hotel, they shouldn’t have written a character with impressive work experience. Just have him as a genius fresh grad from Harvard
It is even more than that for me. I find that his timing is off. In the scenes where he’s supposed to look outraged or his fright is supposed to be funny….he just can’t quite nail them. Also, his face is distracting (not in a good way). It seems to have been painted/plastered on to his skull. He looks very plastic.
Have you watch him in other dramas? He’s a popular child actor whose acting has been recognized. I say this not as his fan because I have been quite negative about him in this recent drama. It’s just that reading your comments and my experience made me wonder if it’s a situation where an actor regress or is it more of him trying to adjust to adult character roles.
I don’t see the problem with his face though. Someone said that he looks like he had plastic surgery. I wonder why would he even need it but then plastic surgery is never done solely on need basis. Still, I don’t think he did.
I’ve heard he was phenomenonal in THE CROWNED CLOWN, and my friend thinks he did well in ABSOLUTE BOYFRIEND too, but she agrees he not doing well at all (so far) in HOTEL DEL LUNA. we are not sure if it’s that he’s miscast or that he doesn’t have the chops yet to do a show like this (I’ve heard complaints of him in romantic dramas or if it’s that he’s fatigued from so many back-to-back dramas. Either way, we both agree that so far, IU is doing a good job of carrying the drama, and he’s not only NOT pulling his weight, he’s actually reducing the quality of the thing.
As someone who is not YJG’s fan (I just don’t like his physical appearance), I feel this comparison is not fair! He has been casted in three different/ difficult lead roles in the last year! He has been praised for his role in Crowned Clown (I have not watched it, but read lot’s of good review in Korean websites)… I dropped MAB at 4th episode, mainly because the characters have been written so awfully unlikable! I don’t think other actors could have done better when a character has written too dumb and flat! Writing and directing play very important roles in actors’ performance! Hotel Del Luna, is all about IU so far, YJG has nothing to do other than being frightened by ghosts!! It’s too early to judge his acting.
As for other actors you mentioned: Kwak Dong Yeon was overacting so much in My Strange Hero (the only complicated role he got so far), though he was likable in Gangnam Beauty. Lee Jae Wook is a rookie and his role in WWW is the simplest role anyone can get! I agree that he’s a likable puppy in WWW, but we still cannot judge is acting!
Anyway I think people are confusing characters (likable/ unlikable characters) with acting skills…
I wasn’t comparing him to anything or calling him a bad actor in general, since I haven’t seen him in other things enough to judge. What he’s not a good actor in, though, is his current shows. His being a good actor in other shows doesn’t have anything to do with this one where he’s being terrible.
The character he is currently playing is not unlikable. It is Yeo Jin-gu’s portrayal that is poor. He has been praised for his roles. But being a good actor in those roles does not mean he is a good actor in this role, which so far he is most certainly not being.
@ladyjaye I still think he’s character is unlikable so far (i.e. with no emotional depth)! I never felt his performance was terrible in this two episodes: he looked frightened and very confused in most of the scenes (like someone who’s having an unbelievable nightmare), I think it’s how this character been written… I just watched this video to check on his acting one more time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTghIlXBJ2o&feature=youtu.be
ARTHDAL CHRONICLES ep 5 My Goodness, HOOOOWWWW can the writing of an epic show be this bad?! Who paid for this script? And who is the writer that allowed their name to be put on this drivel?!
Worse, the PDs resume is also stellar (Signal, Misaeng, My Ahjussi). I dropped it to because I was too disappointed.
Maybe a PD with more experience in sageuks or action would have been better, like the Six Flying Dragons PD (who is currently directing Nokdu Flower, which is by far the superior show imho).
Yes, PD / era mismatch. Better than my theories, which were:
1: overconfidence / delusion
2: he just didn’t care – they offered an elevator-full of cash and he decided to take the money and run.
Also on the subject of ARTHDAL CHRONICLES – imagine trying to humanize genocidaires, the architects of so much suffering bc \”they feel remorse.\” Could never be me. FOH. (Remember this post).
Episode 4, ARTHDAL CHRONICLES . So the character of Eun-seom… Giant sigh. This show is stupid. Lemme just admit that once and for all and just enjoy the ride if I can. Because no.
Agree with you @ladyjaye – some shows don’t take themselves seriously and they are a LOT of fun to watch (think Fiery Priest) but this show takes itself WAAAAAAY too seriously.
That scene in the hall with the dancing priestess and guys playing instruments – all the while everyone is glaring at each other??? WTF?
ooooofffff – but I can’t stop watching it!
So, ARTHDAL CHRONICLES ep 3. Sighhhhh. All that money and they couldn\’t pay writers for a more sensible plot/character building? What is all this, ehn? What is this?!
So… ABYSS ep 1: the writers are tryna tell us that Park Bo-young\’s character woke up in a coffin at her own funeral & didn\’t realize that sth was off until she saw the funeral procession?
Maybe she has vampire blood and sleeping in a coffin is no big deal??? Oh, wait — the undead in this show don’t have much problem with mirrors & sunlight. Hmmm….
Meanwhile, I don’t see how the undertakers could close the coffin (once they finally found the lid) without seeing that it was empty.
Or that her parents, who supposedly loved her so much, wouldn’t come in for one last look at their precious child before the coffin was sealed. I just don’t get it. Unless they do things differently in South Korea.

Arghh. Is it. Netflix is ruining dramas for us.
I dropped at 4. Might pick up once season 2 comes in September

Not sure if it’s Netflix or needing to edit and work on CGI.

So Hotel del Luna ep 1&2: I like the plot so far. IU is acting well, even though there a a few obvious gaps in her skill. Yeo Jin-gu otoh, is NOT acting well at all. Nope nope nope.

He is young and looks young. I only watched ep 1, and I too think he is miscasted for the character description.

The writer of Dae Jang Geum, Tree With Deep Roots, and Six Flying Dragons. Yeah, unbeilivable.

Nokdu Flower is SO good! I hadn’t fallen in love with a saeguk in many years.

Yes, PD / era mismatch. Better than my theories, which were:
1: overconfidence / delusion
2: he just didn’t care – they offered an elevator-full of cash and he decided to take the money and run.

I should have thought these specific writers would have been able to write a decent plot/characters without the incentive of all that money.

So… ABYSS ep 1: the writers are tryna tell us that Park Bo-young\’s character woke up in a coffin at her own funeral & didn\’t realize that sth was off until she saw the funeral procession?
Lord Cobol (Kdramas, like water, flow downhill)

Maybe she has vampire blood and sleeping in a coffin is no big deal??? Oh, wait — the undead in this show don’t have much problem with mirrors & sunlight. Hmmm….
Meanwhile, I don’t see how the undertakers could close the coffin (once they finally found the lid) without seeing that it was empty.

Or that her parents, who supposedly loved her so much, wouldn’t come in for one last look at their precious child before the coffin was sealed. I just don’t get it. Unless they do things differently in South Korea.

Brilliance, intelligence, or even basic smarts, are not words used to describe the behavior of the characters in this drama.
