Beanie level: Noble idiot

Joo Dong-min (Penthouse, The Last Empress) has tendered his resignation and will be leaving SBS to join it’s subsidiary Studio S after his work on the final season of Penthouse.

His next project is expected to be an adaptation of the webtoon Where The Snake Sits. The webtoon is about a housewife brought up in an orphanage which is actually a training ground for serial murderers, and the scary secrets hidden behind her lovely facade. It is estimated that pre-production will be completed late this year or early next year.

According to netizens, the “protagonist” should be in her 30s, that puts the possible age range of the main star to be late 20s to early 40s.

On a side note, looking at the success of Penthouse and the ratings trend for Mine, makjang dramas might become the “in” thing soon.

I hope not. I know they do well in Korea and makjang dramas can be fun, but there is a fine line. The Penthouse writer is probably the most popular makjang writer currently but her style is too OTT and violent for me. Mine is too boring for me.

Would not surprise me if some execs thought SKY Castle was a one off thing and went back to deciding that barely legal, wooden clothes horses belong in the drama and that is what people want.

Just a couple of thoughts on drama billing. For a female lead to be top billed, the drama must be either female centric or equally focused on both leads with the female actor being the bigger name. DAYS is, curiously, a drama where the female actor is top billed on virtue of being the bigger star, but all the shine is on the male lead. This is the worst kind of drama to pick up, because you bear the consequences of the drama flopping, yet there is little benefit to be gained if the drama becomes a hit.

Lol, ending scene for Mine today was hilarious. I’m sorry, Lee Bo-young, I know you’re trying.

I find the discussion on DAYS really interesting.

Personally, I support the view that it’s pretentious. I think the drama epitomises this word.

At some point after trying hard enough to rationalise things… surely you’ll be able to see that the arguments are very forced. It’s a bit like looking back at your boy band crushes, you find out that they are not so handsome after all!

No, I did not get started on Secret Forest. I find it hard to motivate myself when the cast is not that pretty. Yes, superficial. I know.

I love beautiful things and people, too, but this one is a very good show imo. 🥺

I’m the queen of pretty boys and I can only tell you this drama is the best of all the dramas I’ve watched and the second one is far, far away from it. It is also one of the best tv shows ever I’ve seen.
You’re missing a very good one.
And… CSW and Bae Doona not pretty?
    Well…

    3
    1

That happens until you watch really good shows with great acting. That’s when their talent surpasses everything. Some actors lying in CSW’s age are some of the finest of this industry and him included bring that charm and natural acting that many of their juniors still struggle with. It’s okay to be superficial but trust their expertise, they entice you with their acting when you watch their work.

Coming to think of it, I passed Oh My Ghostess because I saw a picture of JJS where he didn’t really look that good. LOL, what was I thinking? He’s one of my favorites now.

      1
      2

I’ve watched four JJS dramas and he’s still a neutral for me. If I don’t like anyone else in the cast, it’s a pass.

I’ve also seen both CSW and BD in other works but yeah…

I think OMG is a fun show though I don’t agree with a certain aspect of the story. Kim Seul-gi is adorable, and JJS is very charming.

From the live chat, it seems like episode 13 is another lackluster one for SYHH. It’s a bit sad to see the drama lose steam toward the end.

That said, I think there’s another cliff hanger at the end.

I feel like the writer only has one main scene for each episode, and the rest are all fillers. At least, that was what I felt for episode 11 and what I suspect will happen in episode 13.

And yes, romance is a bad idea.

    its ok..

if someone likes the pace and content of earlier episodes, they’d be ok with 13

There are very few female 90-ers who are top-billed for their dramas. I hope that PBY chooses her projects more wisely in the future.

I think it’s time to clear my drama backlog… starting with Secret Forest.

When people say that the leads in DAYS have got great chemistry… Lol you haven’t watched enough K-dramas. At that level, I feel nothing. That said, it might also be because I’m a bit superficial 🤔

After watching the trailer for Racket Boys, I think it’s going to be a good watch. I just really dislike watching individual sport…

After I dropped Doom, I decided to watch just the cuts. Terrible idea. I cringed when I saw the supermarket scene. For a second I thought I was watching a Thai lakorn instead.

Kim Jung-hwa’s husband voiced out on Instagram that as devout Christians both he and his wife are opponents of homosexuality. I’m wondering what Knetz have to say on that…

For those who haven’t watched (and don’t plan to watch) Mine, Kim Jung-hwa seemingly plays Kim Seo-hyung’s love interest in the drama, though her husband clarified that that is not the case and the revelation will come later.

I wasn’t planning on watching it in general, but now I’m completely uninterested. That guy…does not seem like a winner.

Never heard of Jesus Christ expressing himself about and against homosexuality. Am I missing something?! Or so called devout Christians don’t read the New Testament and listen only to those interpreting it?

    Luke 6:41,42
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? …

    Luke 18:11
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

It is wrong to love a person but it is ok to love a fictional character?

I can read Korean and sometimes I check out the forums to look at locals’ responses to the dramas I like. It’s so funny that people loved seeing Ji-ah suffer. Like, they want to see more of:

“I know there’s bound to be a happy ending, but in the meantime Ji-ah please stay miserable”.

Maybe because Jang Naras character is so cynical and angry they like seeing the soft emotional side. She does cry beautifully.
      .but yeah people are weird

She does! My heart absolutely broke during ep 12. Brava, JNR.

Really? This is funny. She looks badass in that drama regardless whatever she’s doing, so there’s that.

I just finished the latest episodes of SYHH. Episode 11 was… meh, nothing really happened (but highest ratings to date), but episode 12 was an acting masterclass from Jang Nara. I am blown away.

Oh I still haven’t seen ep 12 and now I can wait to do that.
*looks at a pile of work nearby*

Most of SYHH is just Jang Nara looking good and kicking ass, occasionally chipping in with her comedic chops. But episode 12 is her shouting to the whole world that she is a brilliant actor. And yes *looks at a pile of work nearby* I need to get my priorities right.

OooooMG, I just saw it posted in Viki, but subs won’t be there until tomorrow. I am dying to watch it, especially now! If I look at the preview of ep 13 now to give me a taste for next week, will that ruin it?

    2
    1

I don’t think so, but I also don’t think episode 13’s preview will give you any hint on what’s coming up next week either.

I haven’t watched ep 12 yet, but I’m looking forward to it!

I don\’t get DAYS. I feel that the set up is weak, things happen for no rhyme or reason, and the show just a vehicle to stuff all the tropes in. I see the drama but I don\’t see the story.

I feel you. The whole contract doesn’t make sense. The FL is in a lose-lose situation from the start. And the whole we-are-fated-to-love-each-other and childhood tragedy seem too cliche and forced. I also cringed so hard at the ending of ep 3. Who in the right mind would say those lines? How can you be so sure that you’ll fall in love with someone??? I might watch the show just to admire how pretty it is, but I’m ready to abandon the train any time.

    2
    1

I agree! What’s the point? She could have just let the truck of doom be since she’s terminally ill. Why choose between dooming the world or a loved one?

I find myself trying too hard to rationalise the plot. And it gets me annoyed, because I don’t find the drama interesting. I’m forcing myself to fill in the plot holes for the scriptwriter, because he is deliberating leaving them as puzzles. I’ll be more motivated if say the drama tried to engaged me first, but instead I find the drama not anchored to any logic and the leads are just behaving nonsensically.

I get why they both want the FL to fall in love with the ML, but I think this is way too convenient. All the “build up” just for them to try to romance each other. I am also not biased to the lead actors so I’m looking at them very neutrally, and I don’t think this drama is the meant for that. I got neither their charm nor their chemistry from those clichéd romantic scenes.

      1
      2

Yeah I think the scriptwriter tried too hard to build the conflict but it fell short. However, I must say the shots are so beautiful and the actors give me so much feel that I might stick around a little bit longer just for them hehe.

here’s my only disagreement with this comment:
if you were told you had 100 days to live, WOULD you just let the truck of doom kill you on day ONE???? Ultimately, we all want to live a long and healthy life, and being told that you’d die sooner than you thought typically does not mean that you would give up on the moment-to-moment self-preservation instinct.

Yes I would. If the alternatives were doom to the entire world or doom to my loved one, rationally since I don’t have long to live I’d rather doom myself.

I can\’t remember the last K-drama I completed. I feel like I drop everything 2 episodes in. If the premiere fails to draw me in, I give up. No one\’s got time for slow-burn shows that don\’t entertain.

I feel the same way more and more. I’m just dropping dramas and books left and right. I figure I can always go back and watch later if my mood shifts or if it turns out to be amazing. What do you think was the last really great drama you saw (always looking for good recos!)?

    1

I really cannot remember. I started working in the beginning of 2018 and I think I switched to variety entirely after that for the sake of my sanity.

Back on Dramabeans to leave a comment for my most recent favourite Daebak Realty. The word of mouth is pretty good but unfortunately it still looks like it\’ll be overlooked by most people.

The ratings look they’ve held strong and steady, which makes me happy. It’s currently my favorite watch, too. Great storytelling, and Jang Na-ra’s micro expressions are astoundingly good. I burst out laughing just because of an ever-so-slight twitch of her mouth. Not sure how likely it is she’ll be recognized come awards season, but I think she deserves to be.

    4
    1

Unfortunately, KBS like their weekend dramas (ratings you see). She was overlooked for Go Back Spouses because it wasn’t a good enough ratings hit even though it was KBS’s only critical success that year. The Last Empress was the biggest win for SBS ratings-wise but she lost because of a lack of seniority. I think perhaps she just isn’t powerful enough in the industry to get the highest honours. A middling excellence award is plausible but tbh at this point in her career only the grand prize will do.
