You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 39-40 [Open Thread]

I’m sick today, so I make no promises that this weecap will make an entire lot of sense. Not that this show has a history of lots of sense.

But you know, it’s not a bad set of episodes this weekend. I kinda finished the episodes thinking that it was much of the same — some cute, some tedious, some up and down, back and forth — but upon second thought there’s actually quite a lot of advancement. You might even squeal at some of them. Get your squeeing hats on! On second thought, don’t — who needs a hat that squees? You’ll be doing enough of that yourself.

Highlights

I don’t actually remember what happened for the majority of Episode 39, which I would chalk up to the sicky but for the fact that this is a pattern for this show.

Anyway. Yeon-ah pulls her PR stunt about dating Jun-ho (it’s one of those really thinly veiled announcements where his face is blurred out and no names are given, but everybody totally knows it’s him). He is NOT having it and orders her to issue a denial in the news, only she totally doesn’t and everyone congratulates them. Soon-shin is disheartened, sees this as a wake-up call to let go of her delusions, and pulls away from Jun-ho.

She sees the two of them at the One Restaurant To Rule the World, which hasn’t been featured a lot lately, too bad for Young-hoon who is totally getting shafted on screentime. Then she hurries out before she’s seen but I’m not nervous for her, because she and Jun-ho are totally wearing couple outfits so I know this is going to end in a good place.

But! I honestly had no idea it would get this good, this fast — not that Episode 39 of a 50-episode drama is fast, but still it feels sudden given their usual plodding speed — because Jun-ho totally follows her out and KISSES HER! O! M! G!

I had actually had visions of this show ending with Episode 50 with maybe a hug. A peck on the forehead if we were lucky. A chaste agreement between Soon-shin and Jun-ho to be boyfriend-girlfriend. I hadn’t even bothered to hope for a kiss, so already this show has gone above and beyond. (Well, first it went below and behind, but it’s back up from those lowered expectations.)

The setup is thus: Jun-ho sees her hurrying off and follows. She asks him not to be so nice to him because it confuses her feelings. He’s all, Omg what are you saying, and she blurts that she likes him and it hurts so stop it. Then he says in his emotionally shaky voice (love that voice), How much more of my heart do I have to show you?, hugs her, then kisses her. Then they are cute and happy and all is right with the world.

(Granted, Jun-ho hasn’t exactly been subtle about his emotions, but you do have to feel bad for Soon-shin, who is in love with the CEO of her company, who seems to be dating a top actress, who must feel it’s futile to harbor the crush.)

They spend the rest of Episode 40 shooting each other adorable looks and being both cutesy and awkward.

Soon-shin continues to impress at her drama, where she earns praise from the director and even the grudging sunbaes, who recognize that she has “it” and is doing really well for her first gig. Yeon-ah seethes. That’s a highlight, right?

Chan-woo and Yoo-shin get married. Chicken Ajumma spends the day with her insides twisted in knots. Everyone else is thrilled.

Chan-woo gets a new haircut and looks like a different person. A really hot person. Then he showers and it goes away and I am sad.

There’s a cute bit at the wedding where our men — no, boys, by which I mean Jun-ho and Bread Man — are standing together watching the family take photos. They overhear ajummas calling the sisters beautiful, and when Hye-shin is praised, Bread Man puffs up adorably. Then Soon-shin is praised and Jun-ho just beams with pride. It’s hilarious because they barely even have any claim to feel secondhand pride, but they do and it’s cute.

Soon-shin goes home and Grandma is the least hateful she’s been in months, although that means she’s still kind of hateful. But she says this confusing convoluted speech about how Mi-ryung had a terrible childhood and never grew up right because she didn’t have parents teaching her, and how she was full of ambition to better her life and now is this hotshot star. Grandma says this like it’s an insult. I think it’s kind of awesome, actually.

Then Grandma guesses that Soon-shin is having a hard time living with Mi-ryung, and sniffs, I told you so, and then adds that she can come home and live with them if she really needs to. It’s the weirdest passive-aggressive reasoning that makes me want to bark, “What do you want, Grandma? WHAT?”

But when all’s said and done, it’s the thing to bring Soon-shin around and finally open up the pathways of communication with Mi-ryung. All this while, Mi-ryung has been trying to play the part of the loving mom, but she has been doing the delusional thing of forcing the relationship, determined to have what the movies and fairy tales and books all describe. She is her own worst enemy, isn’t she?

And while I don’t blame Soon-shin for rebuffing Mi-ryung’s overbearing ways, she has been kind of teetering on the brink of brat-dom. It’s just got the potential to end really sadly all around if nobody changes something. So it’s a relief when Soon-shin lets up a little, and makes Mi-ryung breakfast, and agrees to do this mother-daughter CF with her.

I do think Soon-shin had to get her sulks out, because now Mi-ryung actually appreciates this and doesn’t take it for granted, and I almost feel heart-warmed by it. Okay, I am heart-warmed. Things are lookin’ up.

Lowlights

Hye-shin’s ex-husband comes back to Korea, and he’s a primo douchebag. He’s both immature and dictatorial, all, Are you still mad about the cheating thing? I only did it a little! and You should take better care of yourself. On one hand, Hye-shin barely gives him the time of day and orders him to leave every time he shows up, but on the other hand he’s so persistent and annoying that he won’t bother to consider her feelings.

He gets off on the wrong foot with Bread Man, who respectfully keeps his distance, and it’s a little satisfying to see that Hye-shin is still nice to Bread Man while ignoring her ex. I do hope that the ex’s appearance will be the thing to push her to realize how she feels about Bread Man, because they’re sweet and all but SO SLOW. Even slower than Jun-ho and Soon-shin, and left to their own devices it would take them for-e-vah to do anything about their feelings. If ever.

Jun-ho’s mother kicks Dr. Shin out of the house, accusing him of cheating with Mi-ryung. What’s interesting about this is that Dr. Shin feels completely aboveboard about his interactions with her, and I almost believe that he has no interest in stepping out on the marriage. I do think he shows glimmers of interest NOW, but that’s after his wife puts that idea in his head.

Then Jun-ho’s mother goes to Mi-ryung, who is equally startled to be accused of going after her man. There’s no cheating going on, so Jun-ho’s mother is the only one who’s frantic and upset about it all. She relents and tells Dr. Shin to move back home because she’ll give him one chance, but he’s no longer interested in coming back home — he wants to live alone in his one-bedroom for a while, unencumbered by her histrionic reactions to everything. It’s a little harsh but not totally untrue.

All the while, Yeon-ah is fanning the flames of discord, WHO KNOWS WHY, whispering into Mom’s ear and pushing her toward confrontation. Don’t you have enough problems of your own to attend to? Ugh. She’s so terrible. I assume it’s because she’s miffed at both Soon-shin and Mi-ryung and wants to ruin them, but it’s all so juvenile and irrational.

Young-hoon even calls her out for it, but she’s all, Hmph! You think that’s bad? I can do worse! And both Young-hoon and I are all, Uh, I wouldn’t brag about that.

But that’s what second leads do, I suppose.

So Yeon-ah brings Mom to the CF shoot, which is for Dr. Shin’s clinic, featuring Mi-ryung and Soon-shin. Yeon-ah is such an evil wench. Imagine what she could accomplish if she used her powers for good, or neutral. Then Mom gets angry at Dr. Shin for being here — even though her husband is at work, at his own CF, and totally not out of line for being here — and slaps him in front of everybody.

I’m sending feeble mental slaps Yeon-ah’s way, but this bug is totally inhibiting my telepathic powers. Maybe next week.

OMFG! They kissed! Already! At all! I'm in awe of this show right now. I didn't think they'd go there. I mean IU is an idol, with an innocent image, and I didn't think these producers would do anything to "tarnish" her image. I think that would be completely ridiculous, I means, she's 20 after all, but I am really amazed that they went there. I also thought the age difference would be an issue, but thankfully it isn't. Thank you, Show! You may piss me off but I still love you!

Hate Yeon-ah. She's a bitch. Hope she gets her comeuppance soon.

Hate Hye-shin's ex. He's a douchebag. Woo-joo totally gets her brattiness from him. I also think he's only back because his mom told him to come back, so she can continue to have a say in Woo-joo's life. Both of them, ex and his mom, need to step back and evaluate their life choices.

Happy that Yoo-shin and Chan-woo got married. Finally! I hope Yoo-shin really impresses as a daughter-in-law and Chicken Ahjumma gets off her back. Seriously. Their married, they love each other, grow up lady.

Mi-ryung. I have nothing really to say. I hate her, but I'm glad Soon-shin is finally being nice-ish.

Dr. Shin, go back to your wife before you lose her for good. I mean I don't blame him for being so petty, but she does love him. Seriously however these too petty people raised such a good kid like Jun-ho is beyond me. Yi-jung got all the pettiness from them.

Now, we just need to know who Soon-shin's dad is. Ten episodes left, so it better be revealed soon!

Thanks for the weecap, Javabeans! Get some rest! I hope you feel better soon!

I think Woo Joo is a little justified. in her brattiness. Hye-shin hasn't exactly been straight forward with her daughter and had a good solid talk with her. She's been more along the lines of, "Why won't you do what I want you to do and act like?"

Hye Shin hasn't exactly been a good mother.

She should have sat down Woo Joo and said, "I know this divorce is difficult on you and you will face hardships because of it, but I am here for you to answer your questions the best I can."

Only in this episode did she angrily say, "I'm not getting back with your father."

She hasn't really addressed Woo Joo's feelings, the teasing that Woo Joo says she's receiving, the broken heart of her child. She hasn't once thought about Woo Joo's feelings first above her own.

She should have sat Woo Joo down and talked to her honestly, especially after Woo Joo said she knew about the affair. Instead, she's been yelling at her, which would of course make Woo Joo want to rebel and wish they were one family. It's because Hye Shin, herself, has changed in Woo Joo's eyes. Also the demanding that Woo Joo understand *her* feelings without the reciprocity.

i.e. all the parenting in this show sucks.

"..all the parenting in this show sucks''"
I would have to agree with that. I really don't see how there could be so many warped characters in one drama.

In fact, counting them up, pretty much all the "normal" characters in this series are peripheral characters that don't really do much, like the Only Food Stop in Seoul manager.

The mains just seem to keep getting dumber and stupider with each episode, and keep doing things that make NO sense at all.

I was surprised by the kiss too because I'm pretty sure IU was against kissing in Dream High and thats why they only showed her standing on her tip toes. Speaking of, IU is so different from when she was in Dream High. Her character was adorable there, but here her character feels so much more real to me. I'm actually really impressed with her acting, at least compared to the other Dream High kids. She really surprised me here.

She may have been against kissing in Dream High, because her partner there was Wooyoung of 2PM, wasn't he? He's another idol, one from a rather large fan base. She may not have wanted to anger his fans. At least, that's what I think.

I agree with you on IU's acting . Out of all the idols that were casted in Dream High, she's probably one of the few who has any real talent in acting. Soon-shin does seem very real, and I credit that to IU not the writer. The writer is getting on my nerves, and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way. All the dumb and annoying characters this show has is just too much to handle, really. Still going to watch though.

Yeah, you're probably right. She was also about 18 at the time and it was her first time acting and she wasn't even a lead. I'm sure that taking on a lead role in a drama where her romance is at the fore (welllllll excluding the Angsty period) caused her to set aside her reservations as well.

And exactly. The fact that IU was able to take a character that could otherwise be rather standard, and make her into such an endearing character worth rooting for is really impressive. The writer did a good job of setting up promising characters, but has since had them making choices that continually cause us to like the characters less and less. However, I've found that I still love Soon-Shin as much as I did, even though there have been moments when the writer hasn't made the right decisions for her character. And this is all because of IU. And then when you have Jo Jong Seok (whos loveliness we need not even discuss) also working his magic on an otherwise standard hero, you have enough to draw me in dammit. It really is their chemistry that carries the show, and its actually so good that I feel like they were cheated of being a part of a good drama. If only this had been a 16 episode drama! Then there wouldn't be any room for all that angst and stupidity. Although I'm sure this writer would find a way to slip that in there.

Couldn't help but notice all the sisters are wearing black on a wedding day. I'm assuming as to not outshine the bride.

I sorta expected them to be bridesmaids and thus be wearing matching dresses. Maybe that's not Korean thing?

Re bridesmaids - I don't think they're a wedding thing at all in Korea, traditionally speaking. The wearing black to weddings is fine as well (in Japan anyway, and from observation, Korea). I think black is just seen as being neat and formal, but also white is more associated with death. Korean mourning clothes are white and you offer white chrysanthemums at memorials and funerals in several countries.

I think what fascinates me most about this mini-cap is that 97.9% of the posts are squee-ing about a kiss. Something that should have happened 20 episodes ago, and takes up 2 minutes or so of some 45 hours of broadcast time.

Perhaps that is an indication that I am just about the only male poster here :?

I think a huge part of the squeeing is BECAUSE it should have happened 20 episodes ago. We've been waiting so long that we're just happy it turned up. That, and it's Jo Jung-seok.

Just here to say I have officially given up subs for this show. I know that might not seem like a lot, but I'm not a very picky person and don't notice flaws in dramas and movies until they're mentioned.

But you don't need subs to understand cute, right?

I am barely still keeping up with this show, I still fast forward and watch a few clips from each episode just to see what idiotic scenario they came up with this time around.

But I can't help but contrast this with I Summon You Gold, which has a similar theme but which I think is much better done (though it also has some WTF issues). At least the heroine becomes LESS clueless as it moves on, and has finally gotten the guts to go for what she wants.

With LSS, I get the feeling that all she ever does is take the path of least resistance, moping all the way. She has become not just a doormat, but a very squished and worn out one - more like a Zombie Doormat.

Just want to point out and say that Chan Woo didn't get a haircut. He had his hair styled. There's a big difference between getting your hair cut and getting your hair styled. All that was done with Chan Woo's hair was that they combed his bangs back and to the side.

My observation was that you can tell LSS is really learning how to be actress by her learning to to steal the photo op at her own sister's wedding. Note that she's the only one with her head tilted. She might as well be holding her fingers up to make rabbit ears behind the bride's head.

I'm starting to sympathize with MR. Her past actions are by all means not excusable but I understand her rationale as opposed to being purely evil. Her intentions came from a good place - she wanted to forge a relationship with LSS and I feel like MR genuinely loves and cares for LSS.

MR's downfall is that she doesn't understand that her way not be the 'best' way and she can't simply push her decisions on LSS. Having only had to care for her own feelings and needs for most of her life she lacks consideration. And having had the power to manipulate the general public's perception of her based on a manufactured image and some PR work she doesn't understand that it's going to take alot more effort to build a close relationship with LSS. I feel like in EP40 in knowing MR's past - having to beg for food - I understand why she's always going on about pride and dignity; because she had none growing up.

I was beginning to get annoyed at LSS because she didn't give MR any acknowledgement that's why MR was so hell bent on forcing a relationship with LSS i.e. wanting to work with her on drama's and commercials. If LSS showed some signs of love MR would relax on the bitchy act with the hope of a mother-daughter relationship and that's exactly what happened in this episode.

YA is pure evil, i honestly don't have any hopes of giving her the benefit of the doubt at this point. It makes absolutely no sense to me that she would cause havoc in JH's household when she loves him? as well as causing trouble for MR. Her rationale is basically - 'if I can't be happy no-one can'. But it'll all cause her downfall in the end anyway.

No sympathy for MR.

One could almost feel sorry for her in ep 40, but there is not a moment when she (or her stir-the-plot minion) ever asks what Soon Shin would like / think / feels. It's all about "I want/I arranged this/we are doing this/etc."

She has never sincerely asked "Does this girl want a relationship with me?"

And when Soon Shin tells her she doesn't want to do the commercial, she goes quiet for one second and then explodes into a little hissy fit... I thought she was just acting like a child.

That said, I don't think Soon Shin is helping it by living in MR house.

Plus, MR needs to stop assuming that she has any right to be / act as / appear like Soon Shin's mom (i.e. when she asks Soon Shin if the reason for not wanting to do the commercial is that she doesn't want people to see them as mother and daughter and Soon Shin nods).

It is for Soon Shin to decide, not for her.

You know alua, this episode once again validated my theory on MR having some sociopathic tendencies. Her fit at LSS's rejection of her was a sure sign, plus the factoid grandma mentioned about her stealing proved that she had a history of juvenile delinquency, which is another trait of being a sociopath. Some psychologists say that just having 3 of the traits of a sociopath is enough evidence for a person to be classified as one, and since she more or less adhered to all the signs, I think its safe to say that she is one.

So, yeah, no sympathy for her...but I would very much like to study her! Lol

This is exactly where I think the writer went wrong. If she had just had Mi Ryung apologize sincerely to Soon Shin and then had her back off and give Soon-Shin space to make her own decisions, then perhaps there could have been a heartwarming reconciliation here. Perhaps not one where MR gets to become SS's full on mother, but one where she is forgiven and even accepted by SS. The thing about this story line is that its already angsty enough on its own. It didn't need to make the characters involved so immature and selfish in order to perpetuate the drama.

YA needs to go play in rush hour traffic or something. She's a plague on the Shin family and they should take out a restraining order against her. When a man tells you to issue a public retraction of the fact you two are in a relationship, that's a Huge Red Flag he is not interested in you. If he's insistent on keeping things strictly business, that's a Big Hint as well. I can only imagine her reason for screwing with JH's parent's marriage is as a 'two birds, one stone' way of lashing out at JH and MR. Whatever her motivation, she's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over the line with that one. I'm against all forms of petty bitchiness, but if you're going to pull that crap, take it to the person(s) you're pissed at directly. Don't drag innocent people into your bullshit, kthxbye.

I liked the scene where YS was preparing wedding invites to send out and she, Grandma, and Mom were sad about the fact Dad wouldn't be there. It was sweet and touching and, thank you God, no one was shrill and bitchy (except a little bit of Granny being low-level bitchy at the end, IIRC). Why couldn't more of the angst have been handled like this during the show's run?

Chicken Ajumma's upset stomach made me want run to the bathroom. Was that supposed to be some sort of comic relief? I'm past the point of feeling anything other than annoyance whenever she shows up on screen. The show clobbers us constantly with her over-the-top personality and shrill screeching, and she's so hateful, how can you not loathe her? Her refusal to stop bitching for a few short hours and force a smile for her son's sake on his wedding day were the sprinkles and cherry on the ice cream sundae for me. Seriously, woman, get over yourself.

JH and LSS were so freaking cute in 40! Bread Man and JH getting all puffed up when random ladies complimented the sisters at the wedding was just way too cute.

Good idea, YeohAh should play with razor blades on the freeway. Her plan is nearly complete: SS mother is (supposedly) fooling around with JH's dad, JH's mother will never accept her even if MR and Dr Shin aren't fooling around. JH's mom would not want to be in-laws with MR.

YeohAh has to get some credit for her cunning, she is good with the back stab.

Dr Shin keeps thinking about how much fun he has with MR contrasted to his wife's silliness and pettiness. He even has no patience for his equally silly daughter, and he can blame his wife for that too.

Oh puuuuhhhleeease, don't let JH and SS be secret-siblings!

Now comes the break-up to make-up. Our main couple has come soooo far, only to break up. The remaining episodes will be about one of them resisting the other's attempts to reconcile. The reconciliation will happen, somewhere around episode 49.

JH is not a coward when it comes to revealing his feelings. He is so real in that. He's done everything possible to show SS that he cares but she doesn't get it all. When the fortune teller told her there is a guy next to her who likes her, in spite of him stepping closer to her and puffing up for height, she thought that it might be Younghoon. This sends a message that she doesn't even see him as a man. Then again, after the Yeoanah -JH scandal broke out, SS tells him he must be getting married and congratulates him. When he goes to his office he is hurt by her reaction: "What? Congratulations? she's not even jealous." How can you confess to someone who's seemingly not one ioata interested in you. Guys are as anxious as girls. I actually liked it that SS confessed first. This shows also that she is not the same insecure girl who could not confess to Chanwoo years ago. If anything, this relastionship feels very real and develops in a very reallistic way. I'm loving it.
