Beanie level: Eunuch in drag

Random thought: I wonder if having kdramas on Netflix get a lot of people who have never seen Korean shows before into kdrama or if it’s just existing kdrama fans that watch them.

Why are airports so incredibly dramatic.

Can’t we just roll into the drama with a few episodes just dealing with rather uneventful days at the airport? As it is being run smoothly?

So I was going to catch up to 100 Days and Ghost Detective after sampling all the premieres but then Seo Kang Joon happened.

And Sunday is almost over.

Drama watching is a full time job.

Why is it that swoonworthy chaebol jerkfaces get forgiven for being mean and ‘misunderstood’ and are expected to redeem themselves, but a slightly less likeable working class girl gets written off instantly if she’s even got slightly questionable morals?

I understand why she Yeo-reum seems dislikeable, because she’s not a great person, nor is she a good example for anyone. But… doesn’t she also deserve a chance to learn how to improve?

As young adults we’re all just trying to figure out how to live most comfortably anyway. It’s trial and error. Some people need more time to err before they figure it out.

Besides, I really don’t dislike her as much. I’ve had bigger issues with misunderstood Chaebols.

I relate to her plight.

She forgot her umbrella after being told to bring it (me).

She missed her bus and was late on her first day due to distractions (me – how am I still working?).

She has a history of messing up unintentionally and therefore had to actively destress and brace herself before facing on a new challenge (before facing the angry customer) (me).

She really did not want to mess up and really wanted to do her best, but just did not know how (me).

She got put in an almost impossible situation having to deal with an unreasonable customer on her first day of work (me) (! and she had the reflexes to instruct someone to call security instantly seeing his violence, which is the party that should deal with this anyway??! How can they blame her for everything getting destructed?).

She didn’t listen to protocol multiple times because she thought there was a more efficient way to fix things (for instance trying to save a man’s life by putting herself in danger?), and then got scolded. She then decided to follow protocol and tried to do the right thing, and still got scolded (for turning in the smugglers) (me).

Her judgment is pretty bad. But she is trying to do well and put up a good image – which includes not looking helpless by asking for instructions all the time. This doesn’t mean trying to do well isn’t hard. This doesn’t me she doesn’t have terrible judgment.

She’s not actively trying to hurt anyone, so why can’t people root for her to learn how to do things?

Why is it so easy root for perfect candy girls who don’t get much development to “fix” the cold hearted misunderstood chaebol, but hard to root for the non candy girls who have been jaded by reality and are just trying to do better for themselves?

I guess jaded girls all have to bee like Lee Bo Young in IHYV who would only put minimal effort into cases because she didn’t believe her clients were innocent, or because she didn’t care very much. (No criticism there on that show, I loved her.)

/rant over. I’m sorry (not sorry).

I love you. Yes. Candy/happy-go-lucky girls are boring, strong-headed and flawed girls are annoying… you can’t please anyone if you’re a woman. Better luck next time, maybe you can be reborn as an antisocial, handsome man with a shitty personality and get complimented for displays of basic human decency.

Well said! She annoyed me but she’s not beyond redemption. And we are still at ep 2 for goodness sake! And she can spin kick! That’s a major plus! 😀

thank you for this rant, for once we have a flawed female lead not that perfect candy type, it feels more realistic even though her character annoyed me sometimes but there’s space for improvement ^^ !

I completely agree with this. I get that people can have varying opinions about varying things but I raise my eyebrows when I hear people call YeoReum stupid. I didn’t like her at first. I still think she has her priorities in the wrong order; she puts pleasing her boss and getting their compliments over actually doing her job. And it’s easy to see that she’s not putting off doing her job just because – she’s seems wired into believing getting their validation is her key to success. She sucks right now because she’s very flawed and very human. I relate to her in so many ways and I’m not happy about that but that’s the point, right? She’ll grow (if the writer doesn’t mess her up!)
I, personally, get tired of candy characters easily. And I get especially tired of people giving passes to asshole male characters saying he’ll get better but getting angry at any female character that isn’t written to be a candy or someone who’s got their shit together.
If she was written as a sucky character that had was absolutely sucky for no reason, I’d understand but from the tiny glimpses we’ve had, she’s real to her circumstances. Anyway, I might not like her now but I’m rooting for her. It’s her other boss (that male asshole) I absolutely despise!

Thank you for this rant. From all the hate comments on her character, I actually expected a more extreme personality. But then after reading recaps and skip watching the eps, I actually find her relatable even though annoying. She is just like people I know in real life. Heck, she even resembles a younger me with her hotheadedness, excessive pride, and carelessness. But she isn’t beyond redemption and still has lots of room to grow. Besides, with this show being an ensemble drama (plus having 20 hours to fill), I think they can afford to have a more unlikable lead since she isn’t the only people whose stories we’re following.

I haven’t even watched this show yet but THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

Female characters and actresses almost ALWAYS get the short end of the stick, from both the fans and the writers. Even of they actually do end up being well-written, people push them aside so often or, even worse, put them down.

“This character is so boring and unrelatable in her Candy-ness. Get me some female characters with real flaws!”

“This character is so frustrating and angering! How dare she be selfish/imperfect!”

    You really can’t win.

What I also can’t stand are criticisms on CSB’s acting and her being chosen as female lead. Others were saying that at the hands of another actress, the character would’ve been at least likeable. People, we’re just 4 episodes in, argh! Oh, well. You can’t really please everyone.

    10

Agree 100%! I still haven’t started this, but just in general people’s attitudes towards female characters honestly suck. It’s fine to find them annoying or not even like the character, but to just write them off completely is ridiculous. Especially if we’re just in the first few episodes, like there’s no opportunity for growth. You could take every negative trait and give that to a male lead and the same people complaining now would probably have little to no issues.

I just really hate the term “candy” too lol. Maybe because I haven’t seen so many dramas, let alone the older ones, so I don’t really get it. I’ve seen it used on characters that, yes, were hardworking and optimistic but also not one dimensional and boring.

I was miffed that they threw her into volatile situations without any training. It makes no sense. I’m enjoying the drama so far and I like her character. She has room to grow and seems to have natural curiosity which is always a plus in my book.

Reminds me a lot about how people disliked Young Eun-soo from Forest of Secrets — I thought she was an great, complex character but the criticism leveled her way had me heated lol.

So I know beanies have been watching things collectively on rabbit, which sounds like fun.

So erm if I would want to stop being a lurker and actually socialize and join how would I go about this…?

I cannot help but love any character played by Chae Soo Bin. I should have disliked her in Strongest Deliveryman, but I couldn’t. I should have my reservations in Fox Bride Star, but I can’t help but feel for her.

I may not always agree with the way she does things, but I fully appreciate the sentiment behind her actions. It’s hard to feel like you have to prove yourself all the time, and even harder when you somehow just keep messing up due to bad judgment, even if you’re trying your best.

I hope we get to see her learn from her swoonsome mentor and improve at her job! (And I hope her character growth isn’t completely disregarded. Writer-nim, I am watching you).

    my exact sentiment!

I’m also in the minority that didn’t hate her strong delivery man character. She was an outright bitch sometimes (well, most times) in the drama but I couldn’t hate her. Her behavior made sense to me. It didn’t excuse her being a dick but I understood her. Her character wasn’t just unlikable for no reason – she was realistic to her circumstances. I feel the same way about Yeo Reum. At first I didn’t like her but the longer I watched, the better I understood her. Yes, she’s a validation seeker and yes, she’s also hotheaded, and has a knack for only hearing what she wants to hear but there seems to be a reason for it. Which means there’s room for her to grow. She’s clearly flawed and slightly incompetent at her job but ‘nice and hardworking candies’ can be boring so I’m all for a flawed heroine with room for growth.
I didn’t intent to write something this long 😅

CSB is just one of those actresses where I don’t think I’ll ever hate her characters. I sympathized with their situations in Strongest Deliveryman and Sassy Go Go even though her characters were not always the best people . I def need to check out Star Fox Airport!

Is Kim Won Hae in every currently airing drama or am I seeing ghosts?

Omg yes he’s everywhere, right? TGD, The Player and Fox Bride Star 😂

He’s in fox bride star??? I can’t remember seeing him there….

Oh he’s in the scene (in control room) where the staffs in two groups were in some sort of a face-off and he’s the negotiator (on the phone, using loudspeaker), lol.

Ok half an hour later and I relate less, and she annoys me a little more. However, my main question is, why does this airport not have carts for employees? Why are they always crazily running around ?

Half an hour in and I already relate to Yeo-reum on a fundamental level. Her life is my life. Except that I don’t work at an airport, obviously.

So many shows, so little time!

I’ve been hearing good stuff about the guest but due to my messed up work schedule I tend to watch shows at night and, as a true scaredy cat, I already have to be careful with Ghost Detective to leave some time before sleep. I am also quite enjoying Ghost Detective (scruffy is a good look on Daniel Choi) and do not really want to compare it to another show.

Then there’s also the shows I want to watch but am not sure I have time for like Chae Soo Bin’s new show, Terius and 100 days my prince (which I dropped but may pick back up) and Meteor Garden is still on hold. Also The Good Place is back once a week…

What to watch?

Where do I buy more hours in a week(end)????

11
7

Share if you find the time keeper cause I need to buy some too 😂😂😂. The newly airing dramas has few that interest me but after in a drama slump for so long, I lose a know how to watch more than 2 dramas 😅😅😅. Out of 4 new drama, I want to watch 3 of them (Terius, Player, Surgeon heart). I am just glad God’s quiz 5 is airing in Nov/Dec or else…
The guest is GOOD. Totally different from GD and scarier which is 👍👍👍It is hard to compare the 2 shows since they tackle the whole supernatural plot in a totally different way. They recap TG so maybe you can read the recap first?

I might roll with the recaps until I get convinced to watch it. It’s what I’ve been doing for 100 days my prince too.

I am currently only watching Ghost Detective and Superman Returns (I
I am in love with Naeun!). Of the new dramas, I can probably only live watch Where the Stars Land, mainly because of CSB. If not for her, I will probably not make an effort to fit it in my sched.

    2
    1

It’s the reason I am holding off watching everything else too, since I want to try to fit Where the Stars land in first. It is tempting to watch more shows… But I usually can’t manage more than two Q.Q.

      1
      0

Let me know if you find one of time keeper, I need it. Currently, I’m trying to find anything to watch, and it looks like all of my favorite actor/actress star in new drama at the same time. Seo In Guk, Lee Jae Hoon, Chae Soo Bin, Song Seung Hun, Jung So Min, Goo Soo, So Ji Sub……… What should I do?

Caught up with ghost detective by sacrificing sleep… Then proceeded to dream about creepy kids in red shoes.

New episodes today… right?!

I am both annoyed at how slow the week is going and terrified at how little time I have left again to get my work done before Friday’s deadlines.

I just want time to catch up with Ghost Detective Q_Q

So many new shows! Which ones to watch?!

Currently holding out for When Stars Land because Chae Soo Bin has not disappointed yet. I guess I will wait for other beanies’ first impressions for others.

Three particularly memorable dramas that really hit home in one year is not bad! Will there be a 4th?

Ok so 30/17 is over and I am supposed to say something poignant or whatever about this show because it was awesome but all i can think of is THEY HAD TWO DOGS PLAY PAENG/DEOKGU THE DOG?

It took us all by surprise it seems! In my head everytime Seo-ri called him Paeng it was one dog and when Woo-jin called him Deok-gu it was the other!😊

This makes me wonder… Do they have policy to protect maximum working hours for pets? 😀 maybe that’s why they need two… (going to google)

    1
    1

I am guessing (hoping) it was for the dog’s well-being, and so they could make sure they could always film whenever needed without putting too much stress on the dog. I am also guessing if a dog is too tired it won’t be easy to make it behave the way you want it to.

Maybe someday they will be as considerate of their cast and staff as well…

One more week… Familiar Wife, don’t mess this up!!

Although I am not sure how we are going to keep everyone from the current timeline happy as is and keep this Joohyuk and Woojin who we have learned to love AND bring back the kids and Woojins memories from when they were dating happily.

I don’t want a Woojin or a Joohyuk that doesn’t remember any of the events that occurred during this drama. But I also feel it is unfair Woojin has had dreams of a happy dating life she never got to experience!

I suppose the kids would be the same if they got born now rather than a few years ago. They aren’t “murdered”, they will just be a few years younger!

I guess we can’t have it all? In the end, I hope for no more time travel unless we can have all of the above.

Show, you better leave Jonghoo and his babies and Mom and Jooeun and Sangshik and their babies alone!!!!

1
2

I’ve been disappointed in how this show has treated the kids. It appears that Woo Jin doesn’t remember her children and Joo Hyuk has never really cared that he caused them to cease to exist (and has actually worked extremely hard to make sure they continue to not exist). Also, the show will have to convince me that any children born to either Woo Jin or Joo Eun in the current time line are really the exact same children who were born years earlier in a different time line.

    0
    1

I figure they couldnt really be different? If i remember Joohyuk has had a mental breakdown about it, but all seems to be forgotten now.

I do want show to address the kids in the last two episodes, but I don’t trust show to handle another time travel well enough without things getting messed up so I would rather just they fix it with the kids being born in this timeline.

To start 100 days my prince or ghost detective? Nam Ji Hyun or Daniel Choi and Park Eun Bin? Sageuk or Mystery/thriller? Do I have time for both?

What a dilemma.
