Gu Family Book: Episode 14

It’s an episode of reveals, as practically every single character drops a bomb or gets one dropped on them. One daddy goes postal—no, make that two dads, both postal—and start wrecking lives. We’re gonna put those Father’s Day cards on hold until you guys stop killing, maiming, and/or crushing the hearts of young women who just want to date the half-human boy of her choice, okay?

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Wol-ryung greets his old friend matter-of-factly, noting how much he’s aged. So-jung says that time isn’t something humans can cheat, and Wol-ryung wonders (almost with pity for the tiny ants) why humans live those measly hundred years as if they were a thousand.

So-jung asks carefully if he came back a thousand-year demon, which uh, can’t you tell by the eyeliner and spiffy black duds that he’s eeeevil? Wol-ryung has his own questions first, and demands to know about the half-human half-gumiho he saw in the woods tonight.

He saw So-jung’s bracelet on him, so there’s no backing out of an answer. “Who is he?”

Meanwhile, Kang-chi races through the lantern festival and runs right into Yeo-wool without recognizing her, so she calls out to him. He goes slackjawed at the pretty girl and finally manages to say, “Dam Yeo-wool?”

She gets a little bashful, and he just continues to stare. Man, that was just as good the second time around.

We take a sharp cut to the party at the Hundred Year Inn, in honor of our Mystery Woman. Soo-ryun plays the drums as requested, just as she did twenty years ago.

Back at the festival, Kang-chi slowly takes a few steps toward Yeo-wool, and she waits expectantly for a response. The thing he says: “Why… did you come looking like this?” *facepalm*

That’s not the reaction she was hoping for, but she soldiers on as casually as possible: “I dress like this sometimes. Why… is it weird?” Kang-chi just stares and stares, still totally dazed, and nods, “Yeah.” Augh. BOYS.

She starts to get self-conscious and asks what’s weird about it, and he just digs his grave even further: “Just… all of it.” Doofus. She gets mad, of course, and stalks away muttering that she’s going home so he doesn’t have to be with a weirdo, and he hurriedly chases after her, insisting that’s not how he meant it.

She whirls around in his face, making him even more flustered, if that’s possible, and asks how he DID mean it then. Just tell her she looks so pretty it makes you feel all weird inside! Instead, he just blinks and stammers and finally says it’s because she doesn’t look like herself.

She grumps, “This is me too!” Kang-chi: “Okay. Don’t get mad.” It’s infuriating, but cute. She sighs at herself this time, wondering what she was expecting from him.

She turns to go and he grabs an inch of her clothing to stop her, which cracks me up—this coming from the guy who tackles her at every opportunity when she’s wearing pants. She snaps that they have to go buy wishes for their lanterns, and wriggles free.

They hang up a wish, and Yeo-wool asks if he likes what she wished for. He looks over at her, confused—this wasn’t his wish? Yeo-wool: “That you’ll find the Gu Family Book and become human. That’s my wish.” Awwwwww.

He just looks at her without a word, and she finally jokes that he’ll stare a hole right through her head. And then they just stand there, doing the staring dance back and forth, stealing glances and being adorable.

But someone is watching them from afar—it’s Wol-ryung, and Kang-chi can feel his presence. But when he looks up, no one’s there.

Soo-ryun finishes her performance, and Jo Gwan-woong asks his esteemed guest what she thought. Mystery Woman says in Japanese that it was terrible and gets up to leave. Soo-ryun apologizes, and Chung-jo gets all fired up in her defense, demanding to know what she found so wrong with it.

This time the woman answers in perfect Korean, that the performance had no soul. Jo Gwan-woong stops her to comment that one could almost say she was from Joseon, but her assistant simply says he taught her the language. It doesn’t convince him, because he’s a suspicious bastard.

Soo-ryun comes to apologize, and he tells her to come back tomorrow to regain some favor with his guest. He warns that her days as the head gisaeng are numbered.

Chung-jo walks through the street, reminiscing how different last year’s festival was with Kang-chi and Tae-seo. When she looks up, there’s Kang-chi standing right in front of her, but her face falls to see Yeo-wool by his side.

She turns away first, but when a drunken man starts to harass her, Kang-chi steps in, leaving Yeo-wool behind. He walks Chung-jo back home, and asks if she’s still afraid of him, thinking that’s why she can’t look him in the eye.

She asks if Yeo-wool knows what he is, and her heart sinks to hear that she does. She turns around to address him formally, and says she’ll repay him with a drink for escorting her home. He tells her to stop pretending that she’s someone else, and to stop talking that way: “No matter what you wear, no matter where you live, to me you’re just Park Chung-jo!”

Chung-jo bites back: “So you’re saying that a gisaeng shouldn’t live as a gisaeng, like a monster not living like a monster, pretending to be human?” Ouch. Her eyes fill with tears as soon as she steps foot inside.

By the time Kang-chi wanders back to the street where he left Yeo-wool, it’s nearly dawn. He finds her standing there still, waiting for him, back in her regular clothes and holding her new hanbok in a sack. Why does that break my heart so?

She puts on a smile when she sees him and comes bounding up: “You’ve returned!” Kang-chi: “You’ve returned too, to the person I know.” Her face falls as she says yes, and then asks, “She’s the most important person to you, isn’t she—Chung-jo—the meaning of which won’t ever change, will it?”

He’s stunned by the question and doesn’t answer, so she immediately retracts and starts walking away. He suddenly runs after her and whirls her around…

They look into each other’s eyes and he finally opens his mouth… “I’m hungry.” Pfffft. That’s all you’ve got to say?! He covers up the awkward moment with a smile and says they might as well eat, and she laughs.

Back at the school, Teacher Gong and Gon are just finding out that the pair of them have stayed out all night… together. Gon has a meltdown of epic proportions, which I could watch all day.

He screams that he’ll kill Kang-chi, and Teacher Gong has to hold him back so that Master Dam doesn’t find out and kill the both of them. Of course Master Dam walks right up looking for Yeo-wool, and Teacher Gong lies that he sent the both of them on an errand early this morning.

Teacher Gong: “Isn’t that right, Gon?” Gon can barely get out a yes through his gritted teeth, but it’s enough to appease Master Dam and they sigh in relief.

But then another student comes running up in a panic screaming someone’s name. They follow him out to the back woods to find one of their students sucked dry and hanging from a tree. Eep. Master Dam asks Teacher Gong where he sent Yeo-wool and Kang-chi. Double eep.

They’re having breakfast in town, when a couple of guys at the next table over loudly cancel their order, refusing to eat near the bastard who killed his own benefactor. Kang-chi ignores them, but it’s Yeo-wool who gets upset, wondering how long he’s going to keep letting people think he killed Lord Park.

Kang-chi tries to stop her, and says he’s responsible for his death no matter how you look at it, so it’s not worth fighting. But the idiots keep mouthing off, so Yeo-wool kicks him down.

Just as the fight is about to break out, local thug Ma Bong-chul arrives with a few boys in tow and puts a stop to it with a threat. Everyone assumes it’s aimed at Kang-chi, and so they’re all flabbergasted when he directs it at the other guys, and coos at Kang-chi that if anyone messes with him, he’s got his back.

He barks at his boys to call Kang-chi hyungnim from now on, and says he’s not the kind of person who wouldn’t repay the person who saved his life, and winks. Twice. Kang-chi and Yeo-wool cringe in unison. Hee.

Gon tracks them down, and Yeo-wool immediately panics—did Dad find out she was out all night with Kang-chi? They both panic, and Gon gives Kang-chi the side-eye, but there are more urgent matters at hand, and he tells them about the student who was found dead.

Kang-chi returns, wanting to see the body for himself, but the other students start in with an interrogation instead, demanding to know where he was last night. Yeo-wool faces the same question from Dad, and she tells him the truth. It doesn’t go well.

He says that she’s always done the right thing her whole life, and that’s why he’s trusted her and let her do as she wanted until now. Yeo-wool: “But when it comes to Kang-chi, you can’t trust me?” He cuts her off, not wanting to hear the rest.

Tae-seo sees the way the other students are treating Kang-chi, and tells Master Dam that he’s ready to be an undercover agent. He thinks Jo Gwan-woong is staging these murders to make it look like Kang-chi is guilty. So you’re going to play the mole to clear his name? That’s sweet. Dangerous, but at least he’s motivated by something good this time.

Soo-ryun goes to see Mystery Woman to give a formal apology for her performance, but the woman admits that she loved it and lied, because there was no other way to get a meeting with Soo-ryun. Innnteresting.

She asks to come visit the gisaeng house, but Soo-ryun turns her down flat, and says that there are only two ways for a woman to enter the gisaeng house—become a gisaeng, or become the owner.

Jo Gwan-woong can’t get it out of his head that he’s met the mystery woman before, but can’t figure out where…

Mystery Woman gets undressed for a bath, and though we’re still not shown her face, her bare back shows a gisaeng’s tattoo, and scars… from claws digging into her shoulder. Dude, they totally went there. It’s Seo-hwa.

Master Dam sits the kids down to tell them about Tae-seo going undercover, and then announces that once it’s done, Yeo-wool will marry him. WUT. Daaaaaaaaad. Can’t you just ground her for a thousand years?

She protests that it’s so sudden, but he says it’s long been promised between the fathers, and declares that from now on she’ll drop everything and start learning her future wifely duties. Ack, somebody stop him.

He leaves all four kids stunned speechless. (And really, did we have to invite all three guys who are in love with her for this conversation, or was that the point?) Yeo-wool and Kang-chi look up at each other, while Gon has another silent fit. Teacher Gong follows Master Dam out to ask if it’s really necessary to go that far, but he won’t be talked down.

Yeo-wool runs out of the room with Gon chasing after her, leaving Kang-chi and Tae-seo sitting there. Talk about your awkward silences. Aw man, and we just got this bromance back. What the frak are they gonna do now?

Gon follows Yeo-wool to her room, and finds her huddled by her new hanbok. She tells him she wants to be alone, and as soon as he shuts the door she erupts in tears.

Chung-jo practices the drums with fierce determination, thinking back to the moment she pulled away from Kang-chi when he came to get her, when she threw rocks at him in fear of the monster he had become, and then seeing him with Yeo-wool that night.

She collapses to the floor covered in sweat, and says aloud: “You said you didn’t want him, Park Chung-jo. You called him a monster.”

She gets called out to see Jo Gwan-woong, and receives her old maidservant as a gift. She’s not impressed though, and says he’d have to give her the Hundred Year Inn before she felt any kind of satisfaction.

Today she settles for him kicking Wol-sun out, which he does at the drop of a hat, in front of all the other girls. Chung-jo sits down and pours him a drink, and he notes that she’s enduring well.

She says he’s the one who taught her to do anything to survive: “So I decided to do just that—I will do whatever it takes to live till the end, and stab you through the heart with my own hands.” Excellent. He’s surprised by the answer, but the bastard likes it, and says he’ll sit by and watch over her until she does.

Kang-chi goes back to bean counting, and jumps out of his skin when he finds Teacher Gong sitting there watching him. The old fogey teases that he’s lost his mind because of Yeo-wool’s impending wedding, which Kang-chi denies.

He asks how many beans he’s up to, and then asks, “How many have you counted without your bracelet on?” Kang-chi flips out at the question, swearing up and down that he promised Master Dam he would never take his bracelet off around people.

Teacher Gong: “Is that so?” Kang-chi: “It is!” Teacher Gong: “Is it?” Kang-chi: “That’s what I said!” Teacher Gong: “Okay.”

He hobbles away, and then turns back, “Was it Yeo-wool? The reason you don’t turn into a beast even without your bracelet on.” Kang-chi just stares wide-eyed, and the old man wonders aloud, “How is that possible?” like he’s leaving Kang-chi his next riddle. Ha, I love him.

Flashback to his last bean-counting session, when Yeo-wool had fallen asleep on his shoulder. Kang-chi carefully pulls his bracelet off and shuts his eyes, and when he opens them… he’s still in human form.

And then again at the festival, while she looks up at the lanterns, he puts his hands behind his back and squeezes his eyes shut. A wind blows through, and he looks over at Yeo-wool, who just smiles back at him like normal.

He looks down and breaks into a smile. Behind his back, he’s holding his bracelet in his hand.

Kang-chi narrates: “I honestly don’t know why—how those things happen when Yeo-wool is next to me.” Back in the present, he looks down at his bracelet with another smile.

But suddenly he can feel someone standing behind him, and he turns around to find Wol-ryung smiling back at him. Omo, did he come knowing that Kang-chi is his son?

Kang-chi asks who he is, and bolts up to confront him. But he sends his beans spilling everywhere in the process, and in the split second he looks down, Wol-ryung disappears.

Master Dam takes Gon, Teacher Gong, and Tae-seo to introduce to Lee Soon-shin, and this time they introduce themselves formally as the Men of Honor. Oooh, ooh, was Gon one of them? Where’s the fourth?

Eeeee! It’s Soo-ryun! Is that what her sash was code for?

So the four have finally been uncovered, along with their secret-agent symbols: Gon (apricot blossom), Teacher Gong-dal (bamboo), Tae-seo by way of Lord Park (chrysanthemum), and Soo-ryun (orchid). They bow and pledge their allegiance to Lee Soon-shin.

The first mission is for Tae-seo to return to Jo Gwan-woong, who’s been waiting for him to find out how Lee Soon-shin is spending Lord Park’s silver. Tae-seo tells him he’s building a new kind of ship, and shows him a drawing of the turtle ship plans.

Flashback to the secret meeting, where Lee Soon-shin says they have to give Jo Gwan-woong enough of the truth for him to bite, and tells Tae-seo that his job is to find out if he simply sells secrets to foreign countries, or is in deeper.

So-jung wakes up… on the floor in his library? Wait, has he been knocked out all this time? This is bad. Very bad.

We go back to the conversation that opened the episode, where Wol-ryung asks who Kang-chi is. So-jung says he’s Seo-hwa’s son, and Wol-ryung’s. His reaction is strangely nonexistent, as if he can barely remember who Seo-hwa is.

He asks what happened to her, and when So-jung tells him she died, Wol-ryung says, “That’s too bad. I wanted to snap her neck myself.” Whoa.

He continues, “You asked why I returned? I came to destroy everything.” His eyes glow red, and he throws So-jung into the wall, knocking him out. Back in the present, So-jung struggles to get up, “No, Kang-chi…”

Yeo-wool finds out that Kang-chi is missing, and when one of the students mutters that he must be off in the woods killing someone else, she puts him in his place. He whines that everyone’s taking Kang-chi’s side when he isn’t even human, but she makes it clear there are no sides here, and she’d defend him the same way if everyone started accusing him of murder. Touché.

It’s nightfall by the time Master Dam and Gon hear that Yeo-wool ran off into the woods alone to look for Kang-chi, which is more dumb than brave, I’ll give you that. Gon goes after her. She runs further and further into the woods, calling out to Kang-chi. But that’s not where he is… crap crap crap.

He’s just arriving at So-jung’s house, and he runs down to the library when he hears someone down there. He finds So-jung struggling to stay conscious, and he just keeps telling Kang-chi to run as far away as he can.

Kang-chi asks why he’s saying these things, and So-jung ekes out, “He’s here… to kill you… Wol-ryung… your father.” Eeeee. “Run. Run far away, where he can’t find you, Kang-chi-ya. Hurry!”

Yeo-wool hears a rustling nearby and calls out to Kang-chi. But it’s Wol-ryung’s red eyes that glow back at her. She draws her sword, and he starts to run around her in circles, like he’s taunting his prey.

She takes off running, and he gives chase, just as Kang-chi runs out of So-jung’s house. Please tell me that other time wasn’t a fluke and you can smell her or something.

Yeo-wool trips and falls, and Wol-ryung steps out from the shadows, sans red eyes. She looks up at the imposing figure and thinks in her head, “Kang-chi-ya, help me!”

Kang-chi stops in his tracks. “Yeo-wool-ah!” Wait, can you hear her??

Wol-ryung steps closer and crouches down. He puts a hand to her chin to lift her face up, and then smiles at her. Well that’s ominous.

COMMENTS

Okay, so lots of reveals in this episode. I guess the Seo-hwa twist wasn’t too far-fetched after all. Sigh. I hope there’s going to be a good explanation for her character—that she’s alive, I can buy, but why she’s been hiding away for twenty years without ever looking for her son is the thing that’s going to need a good excuse. While I’m curious about her plan to get back at Jo Gwan-woong, I personally would prefer Chung-jo to get her revenge, because I’m far more invested in her character. I do like that Seo-hwa is Jo Gwan-woong’s weakness as much as she is his obsession, so that should come in handy down the line.

And even though we all knew Wol-ryung would come back evil, it still shocked me just how cold and unfeeling he was with So-jung. Do thousand-year demons not have that paternal instinct, even if it’s to groom a son for an evil empire? I guess he really is just here to destroy everything, though the fact that he’s smart about it rather than just your smash-kill-kill kind of villain is great. It seems he’ll take his time to hunt Kang-chi (and Yeo-wool) and enjoy toying with them. Creepy.

Even though it’s not a huge plot point, I’ve been waiting for the reveal of the four Men of Honor. I didn’t expect Gon because of his age, so that was a nice surprise, but I totally did a fist-pump when they panned over to Soo-ryun. Hers is a backstory I’m dying to know. I love the slow careful reveal of tiny bits of her humanity that began with her sympathy for Seo-hwa and Chung-jo, to her work on behalf of Master Dam, and now this. I hope they take these four someplace interesting, storywise.

The marriage wrench does feel like a maneuvered obstacle, but I actually don’t mind it. It makes perfect sense that Park Mu-sol and Dam Pyung-joon would have promised their children to each other, and given their ages and the time, Yeo-wool would be facing this very problem no matter who the fiancé was. It’s just mean because you know Dad’s reacting to her growing attachment to Kang-chi, and is doing the only thing he can. It’s actually a good thing for the story, because now maybe Mr. I’m-So-Hungry can stop deflecting his feelings and do something. And I love to watch Yeo-wool defy expectations at every turn, and I’m sure this won’t be any different. I mean, does Dad really expect her to put down her sword and pick up needlepoint?

The best reveal of course was the bracelet, especially because I never expected Kang-chi to test it out like that. I was waiting for another emergency situation where she has to talk him back to his human form, but I love that he’s learning on the same curve we are, and testing himself to see if it’s true. So now we know that she really is his human bracelet, and his tether to humanity. Teacher Gong has all the right questions, of course: How is such a thing possible, and why only her? Yes, WHY?

This has got to be the best and worst cliffhanger I have ever watched. Best because, well, it really got me hooked and pumped up. Worst because it really got me hooked and pumping on the screen. When Kang-Chi shouted Yeo Wool's name, I was all "Please don't end like this. Please don't end like this." Cue to Papa Miho's sexy smile and the end (to be continued). Gawd, I was screaming like a banshee after that.

Anyway, great plot development. At least, now my mind could now be at rest with the Seo Hwa reveal. Wondering who that mystery woman was has been plaguing my mind for the past week. I agree with girlfriday though, she better have a good explanation on why she didn't come back and look for poor Kang Chi.

I kind of expected the arrange marriage part ever since it was hinted that Tae Seo may (or may not) have a crush on Yeo Wool. Although it was an overused conflict, I think it suited perfectly as a solution for Master Dam's life-mission: Keep Precious Daughter (aka. Dam Yeo Wool) Away From The Half-Beast (aka. Choi Kang Chi) Who May Or May Not Harm Her. And oh, whose dad he may or may not have killed.

Gon being one of the Men of Honor surprise me too. And here I thought it was Master Dam. Like I said in last episode's recap, Soo Ryun being one of them is just AWESOME! More girl power!! Yaay!

I like the part where Chung Jo regretted pushing Kang Chi away just because she found out he was half-miho. It's like an eye-opener for her. She's not the only one who can like Kang Chi. There are other girls out there, namely Yeo Wool, who can accept him for who he is. Although, I must say, I like Chung Jo's character right now. A girl who went through the worst trials and managed to get back on her feet, tougher than ever.

I think my heart broke a little when Kang Chi returned to Yeo Wool and finding her still waiting but back in men's clothing. Seriously. I hated you at that moment Kang Chi.

Buuut. You got my love back when you discovered that Yeo Wool was your human bracelet. *squeals*

Great episode. Thanks for the recap! :D

Love your comment!

Like you, i was getting frustrated on who the mystery woman was and just can't wait for the show to reveal her. Sadly, this is probably the suckiest family reunion ever, Kang Chi-ya, what with Evil Sexy Dad also in town.

This is gonna be one long week waiting for Monday.

I've watched and read a thousand family reunions, both fictional and not, and I think I have to agree with you on that one.

A mother who wanted to kill him as a baby, and a father who wants to kill him as an adult; poor poor Kang Chi. :(

The scene when KC returned to the marketplace and there was YW waiting for him, changed out of her hanbok waiting for him made me cry. The way she moved her foot over the ground while waiting, and how she lit up at seeing him, really tugged at my heartstrings!

Although it was an overused conflict, I think it suited perfectly as a solution for Master Dam’s life-mission

This is true, but I'm still pissed at him. Also he apparently took stupid pills, because telling her she has to do something is the key to getting her to do the exact opposite.

However, I'm glad that Tae-seo knows about the bond between Yeo-wool and Kang-chi, and seems to be sensitive and somewhat sweet about it so far. Let's hope he doesn't swing into dick territory.

As much as I love daddy Gu sexy smirk. I'm not fangirling over him. It has something to do with his look. The all in black look = EVIL really reminds me of young Anikin. I hate young Anikin ( ok, I hate Hayden Christensons Anikin).
I really enjoyed this episode. There was a lot of cute and funny moments.
The creepy fanboy was hilarious.
The sister that is now a ginseng is growing on me. I like that she's accepted her situation and is no longer going to be at the mercy of everyone around her. She's not happy about it, but that's how she's going to get her vengeance.
I can't wait till next week!!!
Oh... Is Exposition monk dead?

But this guy is so much better at emoting! You can really see the subtle smirks on his face and behind his eyes.

And... well. Definitely fangirling over here, although I hope we see more depth than him being eeeevil. I mean, totally understand him wanting to break the world and all, but hopefully that will change.

Thanks for the recap!!! There was a lot of reveal in todays episode. I bet the writers put in yesterday's as a filler for today's episode!!

I'm pretty sure that WR won't hurt YW, probably just scare her or tell her to send a message to his son. I really don't want to see the whole spell thing because I really don't want to deal with another TS situation. If he puts her on a spell, it will mostly like be to hurt KC and I really don't know who can stop him from turning when his own bracelet is going against him.

I really was surprised at the bracelet part and find it really cute. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the fact that YW accepts her wholeheartedly and feels safe around her that the beast can just hide away.

I kind of thought that lady would be SH, but I was hoping that they had ended her off before. But, I really wanted a closure for WR and SH's storyline, so i'm actually quite happy she is back. I'm pretty sure it will end badly for both or just one of them. I have a feeling SH would probably be the one to bring WR's feelings back. If they end off good, then that's great, but I feel it won't be that way. For her not finding KC when she was back, I'm pretty sure it has to do with the fact she thinks he is in good hands and don't want to disturb his life right now and besides, it's not like she is living her life as SH, she is living a different life. So, is she starts looking for her son, then GW will know and she won't be able to take her revenge. I would question her about it if she was living her life as SH.

As for WR, he is sexy, but I liked him more before than now. What is up with killing your own son? Unless he knows that YW is his bracelet and so if he messed with his bracelet, then he would turn back into a beast. Then, him and his son can destroy the place? Hmm....well anyways, he better not kill his son, he hasn't even gotten to know him yet. Just because KC is half SH and you hate her right now, KC is also have him. It's just wrong to do that. And don't even get me started with having him shipped with YW...oh geez...then what is KC going to do? I don't even want to go there. Sick sick sick!!!!

I really want SH and WR to resolve their relationship and I want CJ to do away with GW. I hope KC ends up with YW. I guess this incident will make KC realize how much YW actually means to him, something more than just a bracelet.

I got my mom to start this show with me and while I was rewatching it before this weeks episodes came out I realized something that pretty much confirmed the veiled lady was Seo Hwa before the actual reveal. In the 2nd episode right before Wol Ryung 'dies', he digs her nails into Seo Hwa's shoulder, causing her to cry out in pain. When I first saw this, I thought it was odd that they added that detail, because the show is rather purposeful in everything it does and doesn't just do stuff like that for dramatics. So when I saw it again after seeing up to ep 12, an idea struck me: what if the whole nail digging bit was an (accidental?) blood exchange like Kang Chi did with Yeo Wol, except instead of healing it bound Seo Hwa to Wol Ryung's curse as well? Like Seo Hwa is cursed to be an evil spirit too and is therefore immortal and still alive. Also, when she supposedly 'died' in front of Joon Gwan Woong, it was when he was receiving guests from Japan. It's possible that they found her alive and secretly took her with them to Japan where she built up her strength the last 20 yrs in order to finally exact her revenge.

...Maybe this is just me. What do you all think?

On a side note: poor Kang Chi. It sucked enough for both his parents to have 'died', but do they really have to come back and hunt him to his death?

Wow that's an interesting theory, I'm getting all excited about the parents again lol.

I just hope both SH and WR resolve their past issues hmmm... maybe become good gumihos together haha. LOL I'm wanting a happy ending for both couples past and present. (sighs.... that's asking for too much).

I have a feeling that SH will redeem WR with her acceptance and love. I'm an optimist.

As for being immortal, sounds like agood idea. WR and SH united and immortal. YW with KC's blood, also immortal - all four living happily ever after with more immortal baby-hos and grand baby-hos, and oh yes, with MBC being their faithful and loyal servant. Ahhh... what more can a crazy ahjumma fan want?

But I know it's not gonna happen. Sigh!

I like your theory except the part where Seo Hwa becomes an immortal... I hope she stays human OR we cannot explain how SH looks different than before (unless there is plastic surgery then that changed the appearance of SH for her to come back to Korea and exact revenge on GW?)

Poor Kang Chi indeed. He does want to know who his parents are but did not want to find them out because he is scared he will hate them (he was honest about this before Yeo Wool :) But now his father wants to kill him and I don't know what his mother wants to do to him :(

Oooooh neat theory about the blood exchange. That would also explain why her coming back into the area woke up Wol-ryung, if he can sense her like Kang-chi can hear Yeo-wool.

I also thought I saw a flicker of emotion on Wol-ryung's face when the monk talked about Seo-hwa, but maybe that's wishful thinking. I'm excited for their characters; hopefully they find peace.

I hope this means Lee Yeon Hee can do a cameo in the end and somehow snap Wol Ryung out of being evil. They deserve a happy ending together.
I guess she wasn't lethally cut with the sword and with time she could heal. Maybe Seo Hwa knew about her baby and that Kang Chi was living well.

I want nice daddy gumiho back.

It's not that hard to explain Seo Hwa's return you know. It's sort of like Jung woo sung's 2010 movie 'Reign of Assassins'. Seo hwa undergo surgery in Japan and now has a new face. 20 yrs ago in order to take a greater revenge for her father, she fake her death when that old man tried to kill her to avoid her killing him. In order for viewers to recognise her 20 yrs later Wol Ryung left her the scars but who knows.

I guess I'm the only one who found the last scene with YW and WR kinda sexy.

I was never really invested in KC, TS or CJ, I am most definately a Gon shipper.

The actress playing CJ is really getting on my nerves, she's all bulging eyes to express almost all of her emotions. Suzy is another one, her last scene where she looks up scared just falls flat.

What's with everyone overacting or underacting? I like the film and all and watch it raw when it comes out but there are so many people who did better in other films that are just bad here.

I'm invested in characters but can't seem to like the actor that portrays them.

Uhhhh, nope, definitely not the only one who found that last scene sexy. Although, GumiDaddy is pretty much the hottest monster ever, so he could probably be wearing a box and be covered in mud and still look good.

I actually really like Chung-jo's actress. I think she's doing well at portraying a lot of emotion with very few facial movements. To each their own.

Putting my 'shippy hat on, one of the best moments of the episode for me came after Kang Chi saw Yeo Wool in the hanbok.

It was when he returned from escorting Chung Jo home and saw Yeo Wool back in her old clothing... and he looked at her with the same slack-jawed 'whoa, pretty' expression as when he first saw her in the hanbok. I can't be the only one who interpreted his stare that way... can I?

Thanks for the recap, girlfriday!

This is mere speculations...

Gu Family Book does not exist as a book of instructions.
Gu Family Book = (UNCONDITIONALLY RECIPROCATED) LOVE.

This way it makes sense.
YW being KC's human bracelet / GFB. ^^

Or I could be wrong.
Either way, KC doesn't actually need to find it anymore. It's proven that YW is his solution.

as soon as I saw the evil red eyes I knew that Seo-Hwa was alive. That was the condition wasn't it? Now I understand dad's an evil demon but even an evil demon should be happy to see their spawn. Come on now why it gotta lead to torturous murder? At least you can say when Wol-ryung does something he goes all out... When he's in love he brings you sacks of butterflies and peaches but when he's betrayed and turned into a demon for thousands of years he sucks the chi out of you

Well but we do need another villian in the show. Some of the other characters such as teacher gong and MBC are just hilarious and likable in the drama. Love the actors who potray them. And I must say I am starting to like Suzy, she is really adorable in this drama. But then again, I always end up liking all the main actresses who act opposite Seung Gi.

Poor So Jung. He's one of my favorite character in this drama, the wise monk that appears and speaks philosophically and walks away. If only people listens to him this drama would never happen. Lol. Also I am really looking forward to WR meeting SH again. And the WR vs KC clash better not be lame. Gotta have something similar to a flameless Iori KoF 13 Neo Max, so fitting for a gumiho battle. We need some top-notch action sequences here. I wonder if Hideyoshi will make an appearance here if they ever touch on the turtle ship naval warfare.

Oh my gosh, the direction in this episode!!!!! This is really one of the best episodes of a drama I've ever scene. After some instances of crappy direction early on in the drama, this scene felt so perfectly wonderfully cinematic. The gravitas totally picked up! And the clothes design! The colors everyone wore! Each color representing their personalities. Oh my gosh! I am so loving this. The music! The drumming! I totally fell in love with Korean drumming when I watched the movie Chunhyang ages ago. And this...wow!!!

And isn't falling in love the bestest thing???

I love it that Tae Soo's character has been restored and redeemed. I love his friendship with Kang Chi. They're really like brothers and Kang Chi needs someone to talk to.

Love Wol Ryung! Oh my gosh, SEXY BEAST!!!!!!!

I really love the head Gisaeng. But alas, sometimes collaterol damage comes back to haunt one. Vengeance galore in this episode. Loved the conversation between Soo-ryun and Miss Hidden Face who is probably Kang Chi's mom. IT just made my heart leap to see two strong women face off.

I'm glad Chung Jo is strong. I was worried she'd go weird on me but yes!!!! She is totally powerfully wonderful.

The women in this drama are so strong. They totally rule!

Thanks so much for the recap. I watched ep 14 unsubbed yesterday. Gotta watch it again now that it's subbed.

I know some folks are already thinking Seo Hwa is evil, but I'm holding out hope that she is only evil toward Big (human) Bad. The show reminds me of that meme with righteous good, chaotic good, neutral good. And the murderers: righteous murderer (Yeo Wol's dad), Evil murderer (Big Bad) and Chaotic murderer (Wol Ryung.) Righteous avenger, evil avenger, and chaotic avenger. I love seeing the shades of howeveryone reacts to the evil life tossed them and how monstrous everyone becomes on the bitterness spectrum.

Okay. This episode was so freaking good. I love all the moments with Kang-chi and Yeo-wool. So freaking adorable. I'm really mad at Master Dam, who I've liked thus far, for his marriage announcement. I feel bad for all three of those guys, too. Especially Yeo-wool, though. I've never liked the idea of arranged marriages, but I can see the reason for them in the past. Still, I hate this twist.

I'm pretty creeped out by Wol-ryung. Props to Choi Jin-hyuk for playing him so well. But all his demon-ness is freaking creepy. I guess he has no emotions left other than hate for those who wronged him. And for that reason I can understand his reaction to wanting to kill Seo-hwa. She DID betray him, and he died thinking she hated him. So, now he comes back and wants to wreck havoc everywhere. This is gonna be good. In a bad way for Kang-chi and the rest of the good guys. I'm just really looking forward to Kang-chi and Wol-ryung having it out. Hopefully, he can redeem his father. Like Luke did to Darth Vader. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

I had a hunch that Seo-hwa wasn't dead, and that the new mystery woman was her. I'm guessing she is? Or that could be another woman who was a gisaeng, and has scars from claws on her shoulder. But what are the chances of that, right?

I'm really psyched about the Men of Honor. I'm so happy Soo-ryun is one and Gon. Awesomesauce.

One thing that does irritate me about this drama is this. It's called Gu Family Book, and Kang-chi's main quest is to find the Book, and yet, he's not really doing a good job of looking for it. Will it just magically appear after a certain amount of time has passed with him not transforming? I need clarification on this, please.

Anyway, loved this episode. Thanks for the recap, GF!

I have a theory. I think that the original 4 men of honour were Master Dam, Teacher Gong, Lord Park and Soo ryun. Master Dam trained Gon to take over from him; Lord Park died and passed the mantle to TS. Teacher Gong did hint that KC would take his place, and imma thinking that YW will be taking over SR's place soon. You know, the old guard making way for the young? Waddaya all think?

Interesting. I like that line of thought. Though I feel Chung Jo would be more appropriate in replacing Sooryun since she pretty much is under her wing and protection and her apprentice. But at the same time i suppose shes not as invested in the whole "greater good for the nation" as Yeol Wool would be

0

Required fields are marked *

That's an excellent theory. I didn't think of it, or think that would be the case until reading your comment. However, I think Chung-jo could take Soo-ryun's place, because Soo-ryun has taken such an interest in her. So I think she could be grooming her to take over for her.

Yeah I see your point. Chung-jo has had to change a lot, and her motivations are more selfish now. Yeo-wool is very selfless at times, when the "greater good" is at stake. I can see her taking Soo-ryun's place.

I would not call her selfish. She is set on getting back her family inn and honor, she is strong, you can't believe she is enjoying all this.

0

I agree with someone. She gave up being saved by Kangchi because she wanted him to clear her father's name. She was also going to enter into an unhappy marriage because it was good for her family. She's not selfish at all.

0

Also, hi everyone :). This is my first time posting here but I absolutely love these recaps. They've helped me to be a part of and understand this amazing world of korean drama. Thanks GirlFriday and javabeans (and other recappers)!

0

It wouldn't make sense for YW to take SR's place in the Men of Honour because SR said she was the 'ears' in their group and was essentially responsible for collecting information from all over Joseon. YW would not be able to do this while helping the academy, so CJ should take SR's place while YW eventually takes her dad's place. Also, she may be fueled by personal revenge right now, but once she accomplishes that, she'll be able to see the greater scope of eliminating people like GW from the face of their country.

Just saying.....

the differ between parent love and KC - YW love :
SW betrayed WR and not accepted what he is....
so, WR, he turned into 1000 years demon.....
what good is it ? when you want to be human and sacrifice all the power and end up useless ?
so Hwanoong made this GFB .....

maybe...
in this GFB story meaning:
1. is about 'accepting'....
2. and sacrifices ....

YW is being KC human bracelet....
because she will do anything for KC ? sacrifice ?
she accepting KC for whatever he is right ?

same with KC right ?
he accepting her with her warrior way...
and sacrifice...
he even took dog bite and samurai for her....
he heal her......
he even pledge to protect her and marry her in his young age....

like SJ said before, both of them are destined to be together, but will end up with one of them will die.
and KC didn't know about this fact right ?

dad knew about it, so he must do like all dads did : to protect his daughter. break them apart....
to prevent her suppose to be demise future if she with KC....

but
like LSS said : who can stop the wind if its already blowing ?

for Teacher Gong.....
so curious....curious.....
is he 'the Hwanoong'.... ?
he seem to know everything....

he seem to enlighten everyones....
he seem like ' a conscience'....
like :
1. when KC have to leave martial art with CJ, he asked master Dam : 'are you sure that this is the right things?'
2. knew KC so well, and handling him right : 'the bet things'....gave him a hints about YW & bracelet....his feeling for YW....
3. enlighten TS about KC...

so many things happens that teacher Gong is always knew and just drop a hints here and there......

oh,
he also present when TS wake up at the school, with his broom, the director even showed us his 'ring thing'........

Even though we know its seo hwa, i love her change and how theyre stretching out the whole no-one-knows-who-she-is thing...also chung jo...i was hating her a bit cuz shes being so annoying towards kang chi ugh but i guess i understand but still...they were like family...but then i guess the situation shes in, she has to be careful of letting her emotions better of her for her own safety. but im liking her now after that incident with JKW and her words to him...oooh they were pretty satisfying when she said it :D cant wait to see what happens to him in the end. And shit son, Wol ryung, you are SO freaky. Still got the good looks goin though although i liked the cute smiley you...now you just smile when u see ki-suckables all alone in the woods. sigh. but IM EXCITED ABOUT SEO HWA AND WHAT HER PLAN IS. So it's like the three of them guys are in love with the same girl?Lucky her!Still not so because she can't have the one that she loves that easily.

I didn't get who the mystery lady was but i do remember the tattoo.I was thinking could it be Seo-hwa but i wasn't sure. They didn't show her face.

I love that this show is still keeping me invested on it given that it's already episode 14.But i'm still wondering if the book that Kang chi is trying to find that could help him become human is really a book or is it just a metaphor of like finding it within himself along the way on his own.Like being with Yeo-wool for instance?

Do anyone miss me in curiosity mode? *blink wink* (just joking, only hearties know that though). So, episode 14 makes my curiosity kicking again, thanks for the Four men(though Seo Ryun is woman) in honour!
Honestly, I never thought Gon will be the master holder too, no, he never get count. I know Seo Ryun is, somehow. Previously I thought, 'the four' will depict 4 Protector Gods. I mean Byakko (tiger), Genbu (turtle, actually is the hybrid of turtle & snake), seiryuu (dragon) and suzaku (red bird, or mostly taken as phoenix). I blame it for Yeo Wool's aboji's symbol which resemble the description of genbu too much. And for Seo Ryun since she is the only woman, which led me to conclusion that she IS suzaku.

But hey, I'm really happy that my guess is wrong! That I can find another piece of knowledge again! ^^
I think beanies from Korea, Chinese, or Vietnam maybe had understand this, but for me alike, this is a brief explanation:

The Four Gentlemen have been used in Chinese
painting since the time of the Chinese Song Dynasty
(960–1279) because of their refined beauty, and
were later adopted by artists in Korea, Japan, and
Vietnam. As they represent the four different seasons(the orchid for spring, the bamboo for summer, the chrysanthemum for autumn, and the plum blossom for winter), the four are used to depict the unfolding of the seasons through the year.

Japanese Apricot Tree:
Purity, Integrity, Longevity
The apricot tree blooms in early spring, delivering a clean fragrance and gracious feature, making it known for purity and integrity. Its characteristics to survive and bloom during cold weather were compared with the upper class of humans. Although it looks dead during the winter, it blooms the next spring, making it a symbol for longevity.

Orchid:
Good Nature
The fragrance of the orchid was usually compared to the beautiful and good nature of human beings that could influence other people.

Chrysanthemum:
Elegance, High Fidelity
A poet named Do Yeon-Myung deserted his official post and returned to his hometown when the king was replaced during a revolt. After that time he lived by raising pine trees and chrysanthemum. The Chrysanthemum became associated with elegance and high fidelity.

Bamboo:
Elegance, Fidelity, Expelling Ghosts and Bad Luck
Bamboo is strong and flexible, even though it is empty inside. Its colors never change throughout the year, so it represents the elegant class of man showing virtue and fidelity. According to legend, a huge ghost lived deep in a mountain and local villagers caught a serious disease when they encountered it. One person was so afraid of it that he burned bamboo every morning and night. The noise
that the bamboo made in the fire was big enough to scare the ghost away. The custom of doing fire
cracking at the end of year originated this way.
Bamboo came to symbolize exorcising ghosts and bad luck.

Well, it can't help explanation that orchid was considered an aphrodisiac and was used in love potions.
Can't believe that just fit gisaeng profession too much

Source:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Gentlemen

Hmm... I'll add another if I find more ;) See ya!!

Required fields are marked *

Addition:
The orchid is serene and peaceful, though sophisticated and reserved from the world.
Bamboo is vigorous and survives throughout the seasons, forever growing upright.
The apricot blossom expresses yin-yang dualities of delicate and hardy, blooming through snow and ice to herald the arrival of spring.
Chrysanthemums continue to flower after a frost, are self-sufficient, and require no assistance in propagating themselves.

I think they choose the perfect character to portray each symbol. And imagine if Kang Chi really become the successor of Gong Dal, hahahaha, this boy too straightforward, but bamboo need flexibility too Kang Chi-ya! Palli!

I think Wol-ryung is killed by Dam Pyeong-joon already. This "Wol-ryung" that revived is a demon with only his past memories so is basically an evil spirit - hence he could not remember SH at first... this Wol-ryung has lost his humanity :( And so he needs to keep feeding on people's soul / spirit to keep himself alive (saw those veins that popped out at his neck before he 'fed'), hence those 'dry' corpses.

So Jung did not die when WR grabbed his throat because the monk has spiritual powers that kept him alive, I guess... maybe the same for Yeo Wool as well but he wants her spiritual powers for his own...

I think you are right.. When WR sucked the ki from the man in the forest the first time, you can see the veins on his neck disappearing.. so he has to consistently do it to look like human..

Someone like SJ who has been his friend for as long as SJ lives and he still do that to him in epi 14, shows that he has no feeling for others(eg.SH may be the woman he loved before but hate her now and she is the one who makes him like this). Even if KC is his son, he is related to SH..he won't be bothered if KC call him 'father'...

I think the reason KangChi is calmed by YeoWool's presence is because of her love and because she believes in him, his good side. When you have someone rooting for you, it brings out your good side.

I like that Seo Hwa is back because she will be the one to free daddy WR from his tranaformation to a 1000 years old demon. I bet that wooden sword that she used to scratch GW's face is still with her and perhaps she would have to stab her own heart to get rid of her guilt towards WR and then free both of them from this ill-fated destiny.

Actually if you watches the episode where SH tried to kill GW, you would see the same Japanese man there looking at her intently. Even when she was slashed, the camera showed his face looking pretty disturbed. So I dun think it was a coincidence that she returned to destroy the people whom she felt destroyed her life. I bet she will take over the gisaeng house as Head and then eat away GW's wealth too. Then she might maybe kill herself in front of WR on order to save KC from being killed by daddy WR? In that way she atoned herself from betraying WR and abandoning KC.

Excellent recap girlfriday!!!

I wasn't surprised to see the head of gisaeng as the member of Man of Honor. I could see that coming, really. They kind of gave us a hint in previous episodes.

When it comes to WR, I don't understand why people are surprised. Even humans in real life can loose their humanity. In affect people can become so blind and cold, that they are able to betray even own mother and kill their dearest friends. Every single war is a very good example and the proof that people can become even worse than animals. And we always wonder why it happens. It's just in human nature I guess, that sometimes some of us are not able to control our temper and emotions.

I think that WR is in a kind of state where he doesn't remember not just who is SH but even who he is. The same was with Kang-chi when he was fighting with his beast side and tried to remember who he is in that state. I guess someone or something has to help WR to remember who he really is. When the monk tried to warn WR about the consequences if he doesn't succeed to become a human, WR kind of avoid to listen to the old man. If he knew then, that he is going to try to kill his own son I don't think he would want to do it. So the conclusion is that WR has to find the way to come back to his old self. I wouldn't like SH to be the one, who is going to end up with WR. I prefer the head of the gisaeng to be the one, at least she is loyal.

WR smile in the end of the episode seemed like: "Hah, you little human even thought you can escape from me, a thousand years old demon?!"

Can't wait to see next episode or at least preview :D!!!

WR is the beastly (physically speaking) of GW. Both have lost their humanity and who they are.

Isn't this true of life? When we allow our beastliness (whatever form it takes - bitterness, jealousy, anger, etc) to consume us, we forget who we are and take on another form.

Correction: WR is the beastly version of GW.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant :-). Humans can be even worse sometimes when they let their beastlines to take over.

Just finished watching the episode. This show is actually getting better in the second half! Who would have thunk?

So, I have this crazy theory about why Wol Ryung did not kill Yeo wool and So Jung (yet). I think he might have witnessed Kang Chi removing his bracelet in the presence of Yeo Wool at the lantern festival and STILL remaining human. What if he wants to test that out for himself? Yunno, to see if Yeo wool is an antigumihocidal drug. Doesn't that suggest that somewhere deep (VERY VERY DEEP!!) inside he still harbours the thought of becoming human. Also explains why he didn't kill So Jung. I see humanity there.

*is in denial that Wol ryung is a heartless beast out to kill everyone*

Firstly, WR is no longer a gumiho... but a full demon who needs to suck ki. So I don't think any bracelet/YW would help make any difference... so

Conclusion: You are in denial...

Just lil o me but I never find anything or anyone who represents evil to be "sexy". There are so many comments about WR being "a sexy demon", which I find disturbing. (the actor, ok - but the character as he is now, no way)

Agree. The actor is good-looking. But the demon Wol-ryung is just creepy and scary.

Love that the Gu men have matching hair - Maybe the Gu Family Book will have drawings of the male ancestors all with the same hair since time immemorial.

I couldn't imagine that anyone else but SW would show up on the scene simultaneously with WR's awakening (yes!)- and I got chills when beautiful angel of darkness WR tells the monk he regrets SW died (as he wanted to return and twist her neck himself [along with destroying everything, btw]). Except that she didn't, so he may get that chance. Shiver.

I also saw the TS/YW match coming with the seal exchange and request last episode - they so don't go together! But it makes sense from the parental political perspective and wasn't surprising.

Come to think of it...this episode is beautiful, hurts but beautiful. Despite Daddy-ho's awakening and the return of Seo Hwa...I think this episode is painting Yeowool's love not only in sincerity but the beauty yet painful. She says to Kang Chi that if someone loves other, they would willingly accept them, no matter what, just like what she did to Kang Chi. We can see that Kang Chi's 'rejection' is out of her expectation, plus his willingness to Chung Jo "whereever you are, to me you'll always be Park Chung Jo", just hurt her more. Poor girl, that's the dilemma being in friend zone, it's so close yet so far. He (and I believe most of us) is afraid to embrace the new feeling, because we had settled the comfortable zone. Love is a strange feeling, it's elating yet wavering, strengthen yet weaken, it's happy and sad, it makes you worry both for happiness and sadness... I love how the love between them is build layer by layer, and loving yeo wool more
*smack Kang Chi's head* YOU GO REALIZE!

Seeing how he woke up the moment the japanese "merchant" arrived, there is no doubt in my mind that this is indeed seo hwa.

She stirs him after so any years. I do think she has come to avenge her family and that she will be a crucial ally to the admiral unless she has to fight for her survival if the father finds out she is alive.

I hope the writers do keep up the good work and keep this show as interesting as it has been until now.

Oy... Am I the only one who knew why SH never bother looking for her son after twenty years of hiding? >>;

To be frank, the answer to that question is in episode 2. She believed that she's an undeserved mother to raise a child. SH already felt guilty about killing WR and attempted to kill KC. So she thought that killing GW may amend her guilt.

However, because she failed to kill GW and lived, finding her child and raising KC would make her feel even more guilty than what she felt before. Imagine having child version of KC asking his mother what happened to dad. Do you think SW have the confidence to tell her son that she killed him? No, she would have a meltdown by guilt and shame for what happened.

Since SW survived the attacked, she didn't bother looking for her son because she still believed she's an undeserved mother. She believed that KC would live a better life with his new family, having a happy and care-freeing life than to share a misery life with her. So although she didn't bother to look for KC after surviving the attack, I think she did the right thing on giving up KC. After all, he deserves to have a better life than have a miserable life. Not to mention, he wouldn't meet all the Pak and Dam clan too.

What kinda bother me about this episode is bringing SH back? I don't know how she managed to survive the attack, but that seems impossible for her to survive, and not to mention right in front of GW too. I understand that WR is back since, hey, he's immortal. But SH is a human being. There's no way a normal human being, especially someone who has no experience of endurance (like martial arts, military) or survival skills, to survive. I just sortta feel that she was brought back as a filler or something.

Anyway, I loved how the writers are developing JC. The girl has went through so many trials and obstacles that she transforms into a stronger and independent character than what she was before. I can't see to see how much JC is transforming throughout the drama.

Maybe the writers didn't come up with a better story how to bring the Daddy Gumiho back, so they used SH as a filler. I think that her presence is really disturbing. I agree about what you said about her and possible reasons to give up on Kang-chi. But still she is kind of a villain to me. Killing WR and attempt to kill Kang-chi as well, and abandoning him in the end are things which can not be erased with blink of an eye. She really has to do something BIG in order to be forgiven. She pretty messed up everything and now it's time for her to fix things.
