[Theme of the Month] What dramas need a sequel?

Although dramaland has been giving us more sequels in recent years than it has historically done, K-dramas are still not a format that is wont to produce additional seasons, no matter how the fans clamor or how much the material seems ripe for further exploration. Of course, even in those rare cases, it’s an even rarer event that a new season can reproduce the magic of the initial one, so just because we get a sequel doesn’t mean it’s what we wanted (…I’m lookin’ at you, IRIS).

But that doesn’t stop us from wishing, dreaming, and sometimes fanfic-writing our own ideas for subsequent adventures featuring our favorite casts and fictional worlds, and now’s your chance to share.

What drama do you think needs another season, and what plot would those additional episodes feature?

To submit:

  • Email your submissions to hello@dramabeans.com. If you have a registered Dramabeans account, include your handle so we can link to it.
  • Include at least 1 image, though more is preferred.
  • Suggested length: Between 500 and 1,000 words.
  • Deadline: We will post these on a rolling basis, so we’re taking submissions now. We will cut off accepting submissions on July 26. If you miss this month, join us for a new theme next month!

I have to agree. It's one of the first things I love about K-dramas & J-doramas - they're the novel/book version of a movie. There's a clearly defined beginning, middle and end (in theory, in practice it doesn't always work out) and the plot has some direction. As opposed to having direction for maybe three seasons and then just going on and on and on until you've milked the show dry and there's no more money left to be earned.

Just as someone who loves a good story, K-drama format is far more appealing.

Nonetheless, I'll try to think differently for this month. It should be a fun exercise. :)

Can't agree more. I tried Vampire Diaries & I can't even make it through Season 3... Sighs. *Team Delena FTW*

But I was so sad when all the CSI series ended. Well, there's only THIS much (almost 800 episodes in total) of crimes they can cover I guess. xD

But your ship was explored better in season three, plus the introduction of the Originals into Mystic Falls, Stefan going (back) to the dark side, Caroline's development etc. I really like season 3, not so much 4, but like 5 because of Katherine's 'humanisation'.

Can't wait for what ya'll say

My favorite dramas are wholly complete stories, but I Remember You should have a sequel--I MEAN THEY DIDN"T EVEN DO THE THING (you know what I'm talking about).

I second age of youth. I feel like that's a whole sitcom that could and should keep going forever. It's the same as Smart Prison Living--it's slice-of-life enough, and had such a dense ensemble cast, I could imagine living in that world with multiple characters through infinite seasons.

For the most part, though, I'd just want sequels to right the wrongs of dramas past, which means I'm mostly for rewrites *coughs Hwayugi coughs W coughs*

The first time I watched the drama I somehow missed the most important sentence in the whole thing, so when I saw the ending I assumed they would get back together, but how would that work since he didn't age and she would? The most important sentence I missed was when he said that when she died, time stopped for him and wouldn't restart until she was reincarnated. So he waited how many centuries for that to happen? When he met her again in this modern era, time began again for him and they would be able to grow old together. This was strongly implied.

Thanks for having Vampire Prosecutor’s poster right in the middle. That’s the first drama that came to mind. Yeon Junghoon previously had this “VP(2/6)” on his IG description, but it’s no longer there. That makes me so upset, thinking if the sequel plans had fallen through, T.T

God of Quiz is next on mind, & its Season 5 has already been finalized I’M SO EXCITED!!! Ryu Deokhwan & Yoon Joohee better sign up if not I will be disappointed again!

Most dramas I thought of are from OCN, like Missing Noir M & Ten.

I like my dramas (mostly romance~) with definite endings while having the room for imagination. Unless the ending is obviously incomplete, then I will bang on my table asking for a conclusion!

That’s why I can’t stand American series with neverending seasons. However I can’t have enough of crime procedural, hence the OCN crime dramas mentioned. Heh.

Required fields are marked *

In the Chinese sequel, the heroine (Ruoxi) angst for an episode or two, gets hit by a car and loses all her memories about the past, and the sequel, with the exception of a small reference to the love interest's favourite flower, became about a fashion company with inheritance drama, twin sisters, love triangles and little more.

I still think a sequel to Scarlet Heart could work, because while I can appreciate that the ending is supposed to end sad and unsolved, it can work to have a way for at least the heroine to get closure. The problem is that I think the Korean version had too many faults, so the second season would spend too much time excusing or fixing those faults rather than be a good story.

Circle (Who and what exactly is Byul, is she immortal? What would happen next?)

Liars Game (Would be cool if they were dragged into another game, and also see more of a character development for the main lead.)

Faith (I adored this drama, it gave me so many feels. Would just love to see another season.)

When a drama's first season is popular, there's usually a good reason for it. Cast, crew, writing, directing all come together to make a quality show. However, most of the time when ratings are high enough to warrant a second season, it's like the team (writing and directing) didn't get it, didn't get why it was so good the first time around and try to change things up. No. What was great about the first season was the chemistry between the leads. They were so darn cute together and worked so well as a team. Where was the team in the 2nd season? They split them up too much, it started too silly and went downhill from there.

I do want to see a new sequel for mystery queen. Cause I heard season 2 again didn't give us closure. -_-
But um, I really wish Tvn stopped making let's eat. I mean, don't get me wrong, but I feel like the male lead on let's eat is like a total douchebag, and I feel like beating him up now lol, cause each new season he's back with a new girl? And it's not funny? They make us invest in a relationship for 16 whole episodes and then voila, new season new romance [and this time a girl from his college? Smh. What about the last two girlfriends, who was apparently the love of his life back then, after he moved past college, *rolling eyes. ] Maybe they could think of just keeping the format but taking new leads and different stories for the newer seasons. The way it's going until now, I just don't feel motivated enough to get sucked into another relationship saga, just cause I know he would be back with a new gf in two years.
And also, no one can beat the girlfriend from season 1 lol, at least for me. Sorry for the rant haha.

I think he has a ring in the most recent promos, so maybe he did find the love of his life, and maybe we’ll get a cameo of Seo Hyun Jin, and maybe he’ll just reminisce about his college love, but I’ll be in it for the food and I’m just fine with his serial monogamist relationships (because that’s life). 😃

I was fine with the MQ season 1 ending and didn't need a sequel. But then they gave us a lesser sequel with no closure. I love the OTP in the MQ series, and now I want a season three even if it is of even worse quality.

I never watched season 2 of Let's Eat. I'm one of the few that liked season 1's girlfriend and didn't feel like watching him romance someone else. In season 1, there was a timejump, so you know they were committed to each other for years. So it's weird to see him with other people, even though that happens all the time in real life (break up after many years of dating only to marry someone you've dated for less than a year). I wish they hadn't done any romance in the first season. The point of the drama was the food and the way food brings people together.

4
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes yes to everything you said! I haven't even watched let's eat season 2 since in my mind the ending to the first season was perfect and those two were just too cute together. I know people break up all the time, but after absolutely being convinced that these two are just right for each other on season 1, I just wasn't too upbeat about seeing him falling for another girl on season 2. And now there is season 3 happening. I also enjoyed the food bonanza and the main reason the show's so captivating is because of the food and how they make it the center of the drama, but still I liked the noona on season 1 who was an introvert, and like an average girl of our society.
And yeah, like you said if they wanted to tell us stories on food, then romance shouldn't be included.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

i'm not against a new sequel to let's eat and not against a third relationship even if i found the 2nd relationship perfect.
People in real life can have multiple serious relationships one after the another. As long as it isn't in the same time, then, i think it's ok. We can just close our eyes on it.
Now, i would have like that she, maybe, lost that love of food, that interest. And he would be the one to get her back in the game. Or he would be the one who would have lost any interest and she would bring him back. If it's not like that, it will be kinda repetitive.
Buuuuuuuut, it's food, and the way, every single meal is displayed is so gorgeous that i will just try to forgive any weird script they'll comme up with.

Wow, I forgot that Forest of Secrets left an opening for a 2nd season! Whatever happened to that possibility, I know it was discussed at one time.

... Not that I particularly liked the second season, but Mystery Queen 3!! Like you do NOT end a series like that! What about the guy's weird sudden death at the end? The open ending? Like hell naw man!

I honestly don't even want a sequel for some shows. If anything I like what they did with the Answer Me/Reply series, where it's new characters in the same world. Or at least give me a better ending for some of these shows! Scarlet Heart...

Most definitely Page Turner. I mean, I need to know who Yoo-seul ends up with (of course, the only answer I will settle for is Jin-mok, soooooo...).

I second this. The ending made me have a meltdown. I actually don't care who ends up with who as long as a happy Cha Sik gets to keep studying piano, and we finally find out who is his real dad. He got the shaft at the end of that show IMHO.

at this rate im just going to list my fave dramas, even when they dont actually need a sequel. i just want my fav show to run forever.

Witch's romance 2 - when yoon dong ha has become a successful doctor, and now he has to juggle between career and raising together with his wife

Age of youth 3 - cause who doesnt?

I remember you - the ending was perfect as it is but still explorable

weightlifting fairy kim bok joo - when both of them go for the olympics

high kick 2 - to be honest i just need an alternate ending cause you know why. Well if that cant be helped, maybe another sequel to show how jung eum and joon hyuk carry on with their lives would suffice

Soulmate, enough said. This drama was so underrated but oh so good. It definitely needs a second season. I don't even know if the original actors are acting anymore
