Because This Life is My First poster🤔☺️. A coincidence?

It's hard for one to take his/her own advice. Or, to ever get tired of fighting so you just stop anyway even though the solution is right in front of you.
The course work is piling up so much it's burdensome to even pick up the pen to work. I just want to chug a drink down as Se-hee and Ji-ho are doing up there and forget I have deadlines breeding down my neck.
Nice part, a friend fixed an outing for today and I can only imagine how much strength I'll get at the end of it.

According to a Newsen report, the decision to cancel episodes of the popular K-Drama One Dollar Lawyer was due to a rift between the drama’s writer and the show’s production studio which led to audience malcontent and confusion regarding SBS‘s hit drama's decision to shorten the drama from sixteen episodes to twelve citing an effort to boost quality. Fans of the drama criticized the choice, stating that shortening a popular drama was unprecedented and that the decision was even more puzzling considering SBS’s recent struggle to attract viewers. SBS’s One Dollar Lawyer has become Korea’s most-watched primetime drama, with its most recent episode bringing in a viewership rating of 13.6%.

The production company, SBS’ StudioS, denied the allegations.
Newsen, reported the reason for the cancelation is due to an alleged conflict between the show’s writer and its production company. According to the article, an insider familiar with the situation stated that the conflict arose when the production studio started caring more about the company’s profits rather than the drama.

Although it is common for failed dramas to end early, canceling a drama that attracts so many sponsors can only mean there are production issues. An insider also stated that there was a power struggle that manifested itself in ways that affected the whole team. Ever since episodes 5-6, there was a bit of conflict that grew into a power struggle which divulged into late scripts, sending scripts back for revisions, and filming delays.

This is an in-house cost issue at SBS. The actors, director, staff, writer only get paid after a TV episode airs so cutting back the number of episodes saves the network money, in theory. The network rejection of scripts could also mean cost cutting if locations, props, extras hit the bottom line. However, there is usually a compromise between the parties to keep the series on track. In this case, it did not happen. It led to the drastic change to air one episode a week since the next TV was not ready to air early.

Oh that explains a lot and may account for the abruptness of the shift in tone too. Thanks for sharing. What a shame for those who put in the time and energy to write, act and produce the show.

So if they send everybody off on a reward vacation, the writer's ticket will be one-way?

Wow! This is very sad to hear of. And it's a shame on the production house.

But I thought we've gotten to the point in kdramas where filming and principal photography starts months before the premiere date, as such a bulk of episodes have been pre-produced. So what's with the filming again when it's still airing, more so very early in ep 5&6.

Even if you analyzed the ratings after airing ep 5-8 it's still maintaining it's margin - rose up and limping between low high and high high. So I don't know why the production house believes writing wouldn't be able to maintain the ratings or even go a bit higher.

Now I wish 1$L was completely pre-produced.

It's very surprising for a drama that has good ratings. It's not like they could accuse the writer or the PD to be bad at doing their job...

There may be other things going on here. From what I've read, this drama script was originally circulating in 2016, when the successful Neighborhood Lawyer was produced, and the One Dollar Lawyer version was suspected of being let's say a pale copy (avoiding the P-word). I just wonder why the production company signed on to a script that carried so much negative baggage.

So sorry to hear this. If the drama gets shortened, many people’s compensation will be affected, and it isn’t their faults. What a bad way to do business. How unprofessional.

In the past SBS a has not been shy in cutting episodes from dramas. In 2018 both YOUR HONOR (average rating 7%) and STILL 17/30B17 (average rating 9%) both had 4 episode cuts from 20 to 16 episodes. Those are not the ratings for ONE DOLLAR LAWYER but imo they really weren’t all that bad.
YH suffered from the ratings cut, STILL 17 not all imo.

If a PD has several good shows in a row, it's because...
1: He's talented and can turn any script into a good show?
2: He's good at picking good scripts that others overlook?
3: He has the clout to grab the good scripts away from all the other PDs?
4: He's a secret chaebol heir?

Saw on Asianwiki that All of Us Are Dead season 2 is set for 2023, with the same writer and PD. I went back to reread the s1 series review and comments, and it's clear that my recollections are more favorable than most users' comments. There may be a rewatch in the cards, but for once, a sequel seems like good news?

I miss those times when everything was on Viki and/or dramafever. I knew where to find my dramas, I knew I wasn't missing on anything.
Now I'm constantly forgetting the premiers and I never know where are the shows streaming. 🥺

I feel like every week 10 hidden dramas appear, for real. 😆

Dear beanies, I hope you had a nice week! I didn't 😂 but wtv, there's only one month left.

I need Work Later, Drink Now 2 desperately now that Gaus is gone. Till then, Behind Every Start I guess. I really liked the first episode.

I miss DF too! I have come to accept that I won’t get to see all the shows and that I will end up missing good shows. I watch what’s on Netflix, Viki and Iqiyi (cdramas). And usually that’s all the time I have. Even this feels like a lot at times. So may be it’s not a bad thing for me!
I almost never go to dark side unless it’s something I absolutely can’t miss (like Adamas).

Hope next week is better for you!

I am getting close to subscribing to iQIYI. Zhang Ruo Yun’s 2022 uniformed police slice of life drama ORDINARY GREATNESS (38 eps) is available there. I am a ZRY fan from his MEDICAL EXAMINER: DR. QIN (2016) and SWORD SNOW STRIDE (2021) both available on Viki US.
Another cdrama in cops/crime mystery at iQIYI I want to check out is the 12 episode THE LONG NIGHT (2020).

They do have an offer doing on for annual subscription.
I don’t watch costume dramas but I still find the subscription worth it. I quite liked their Light On series dramas.
I missed ordinary Greatness when it aired. Cdramas are hard to keep up with given the number of dramas and daily episodes they release.

@marcusnyc20 I didn't watch JOL but its pacing should be ok for it to be so popular. They did audience previewing study then cut about 8 (?) episodes worth of material before airing.

However, the plan is for JOL to have 3 seasons and some cdramas now split a drama (or season) into 1st and 2nd halves to bypass the soft 40-ep per drama limit. Carefully consider before going on board.

Glad it's working on for you. I think I'm gonna suffer till the end. 😂 Or maybe I'll get used to it.

Thank you! hope you enjoy the weekend. 😊

Yes, it would be nice to not have to get 7 or 8 different subscriptions as well as a VPN to get Disney shows they haven't added to their US offerings....however...a few of the Disney shows are on Hulu now.

We get Netflix as a free add on with our Cable/Internet package, and the Disney/Hulu/ESPN bundle as a free add-on with our cell phone service. Amazon Prime would be a bargain for us even without the streaming service, so the only thing I am paying for specifically for KDrama is Viki.

Yup. Missed the old days when I didn't need chase "content" all over the World Wide Web, and Chinese dramas/donghuas would be on their original platforms instead of being blocked outside China.

Upside, I guess, is that my "laziness" has reduced my desired to watch dramas so much that I have little patience trying out vast majority of the offerings out there - They all belong to "Nothing new under the sun".

IQiyi Chinese platform has always been blocking so I've never developed much desire to watch its content.

Youku has been the "nicest" about not blocking its content worldwide. Good ol' days its desktop app allowed downloading some dramas in mp4, no strings (licensing restrictions) attached. After actor LYF's paying for prostitutes scandal broke, Youku made his dramas (with each drama's episodes merged into one big episode) all freely downloadable, before they were taken down. I didn't bother with that because I didn't much like any of his dramas. I was just see about Chinese platforms self-censorship.

I’d like to (re)introduce myself to Dramabeans contributors. I was quite active on this site for the first half of the year, and was really enjoying it, but then I thought, I’m just not worthy, so it would be noble of me to sacrifice my enjoyment and leave the site for absolutely no reason.

After a time skip of several months, but what seemed like 2-3 years, when I was either studying how to run my home espresso machine in Europe, or handing out shoes to the poor in the country of Africa (my exact recollection of what I was doing fell prey to a bout of amnesia, from an unfortunate encounter with a white truck), I was wandering the streets of the Internet when I caught sight of the Dramabeans home page, all the memories came flooding back, and I realized how much I missed writing rambling kdrama commentaries that no one reads.

So here I am again and I apologize in advance for annoying anyone by taking up too much server space. I was pleased to see that many of my favorite DB commentators remain active, including the people who just posted above me: welh, @jerrykuvira, @reply1988, @lordcobol, @kurama, and @enriquequierecagar. Coincidence that this thread inspired me to come back?—I think not!

I also want to pay tribute to all the DB staff who will continue to guide me to Kdrama knowledge—it’s because of the chemistry between all of you I can’t stay away from this site.

Above all, I stan @missvictrix and am a member of the Pickt-VIct-rix Nation. The “Picts” as we call ourselves, will be sending her a coffee cart at her next public lecture. Or does Dramabeans already have an official coffee cart? They should!

Not having other friends that are kdrsma fans is hard. I have so many kdrama-related jokes and nowhere to use them.

What's the point of hearing a friend say something stupid if I can't reply "yeah, and Im Si Wan is always choosing bad projects".
Or what's the point of watching my friend get angry at someone if I can't tell them "careful, Park Il Do loves this". Well, I actually have one friend that watched The Guest last month... but that's the only joke she would understand! 🥺

I think there might be some external force that demands a certain ending? Perhaps the ending is determined when the show has already aired half of its eps? I find it hard to believe that writers who wrote 12 eps so well were unable to pull off a good landing. When this happened too many times, I took it that perhaps they were forced to write those crappy endings.

4
reply

Required fields are marked *

What I have learned in creative writing is that the best way to write a good story is:
First, write the opening paragraph.
Second, write the ending.
Third, outline the path from beginning to end.
Fourth, complete.

3
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't think that always works especially if external forces are at play such as executive/network meddling, fan reaction, etc
The only drama that comes to mind when I think the beginning & end had to be written before production began is Mouse. Whenever I watch Mouse, I think all the stuff related to Lee Seung Gi's character had to have been planned out and written if nothing else.

Plus you can have a decent start and a decent end but if the path to end makes people go "huh?" then folks may not make it to the end.

The first three K-dramas you watch, the 3rd act 'forced separation' trope is new and original. After the 100th K-drama, it kind'a get on your nerves whenever it pops up.

According to K-dramas about writing K-dramas, a drama usually gets green-lighted based on the show synopsis and finished scripts for the first three episodes. Then comes the deadlines, the audience feed-back, the studio pressure, the exhaustion. Some dramas you can tell by episode 14 they're just running on fumes.

Lol so I'm just finishing watching Chimera. And gosh dang it I have a soapbox for this show now. I dropped it the first time around (shamefully I lasted like 8-10 episodes, oof). It was just... boring. Serial killers and cops and FIRE... that should be fun! That should be exciting! They should really try and delve into who it is and have a lot of close calls as they chase the killer! Right? Wrong. They just spent a lot of time talking with a bunch of old conglomerates scheming over drinks. Laaaame. So then later I'm like: ok, maybe I'll give it another shot as NOT a serial killer show and instead a political thriller vibe. And that was actually a bit more ok... I started watching from episode 8, skipped my way through episode 13... And then my jaw dropped in the last three episodes. WHERE HAD THIS BEEN THE ENTIRE SHOW?!

*Spoilers Ahead*

Picture this: instead of dragging out all the secrets and backstory the entire drama, they instead give that to us in the opening week, and we get the entire show to bite our nails as mom fights to retain her sense of self so the old serial killer doesn't come back to the surface. Like what?! I would have loved to get more flashbacks about what she did as Chimera, and even feel the danger as she almost kills people in the present but works to stay in control... That would have been a GREAT drama. And the other twist? Loved it! Keep it! Just... I dunno... make that one character a more interesting, integral part of the story before then. Not someone just annoyingly hanging around the sidelines. Make them a bit more captivating and quirky/likeable as a character a la K in Inspector Koo... and then watch the jaws drop! Gosh darn it this show could have been so much better. I love the idea of all these crimes done with fire and allll the different ways to make things explode. It just... wasn't an explosive show. Fare thee well, Chimera, I liked the last 2 and a half episodes.
