My Lovely Liar: Episodes 11-12

The murder mystery takes the foreground this week, forcing our hero back into the public eye in all the worst ways. It’s fortunate that our lead couple has laid a solid foundation of trust, because he’s going to need all the support he can get to face past lies and pursue the truth.

EPISODES 11-12

Since Kang-min has already started re-investigating Eom-ji’s case, he’s with his old boss, KWAK JIN-HYUK (Sohn Sang-kyung) when news breaks that a skeleton has been unearthed on a wooded hill near the beach where Do-ha left Eom-ji that fateful night. Jin-hyuk finds a man’s ring buried with the remains, but hides it from Kang-min — and that’s not all he’s hiding. Do-ha’s mother is funding treatment for Jin-hyuk’s sick daughter in return for him getting Do-ha acquitted.

Eventually, DNA tests confirm: Eom-ji is dead. Eom-ho is called in to say his final heart-wrenching goodbyes, and word spreads over the internet that superstar composer Kim Do-ha was the prime suspect in this five-year-old murder case.

For maximum gut-punch effect, the nationwide reveal happens just after Do-ha and Sol-hee ever-so-cutely reflect on how much freer and happier they’ve helped each other become. But despite a sprinkling of doubt from Kang-min (whose working theory is that Do-ha could have unknowingly murdered Eom-ji while under the influence of sleeping pills), Sol-hee stands by her trust in Do-ha’s innocence.

My Lovely Liar: Episodes 11-12 Yoon Ji-on

Meanwhile, thanks to some sweetly supportive advice from Chi-hoon, Sha-on decides to take a temporary step away from her career and figure herself out. Deuk-chan isn’t happy about it, but he’s falling apart at the seams, so he tamps down his emotions and robotically informs his employees of three changes to be effective immediately: 1) J Entertainment is cutting ties with Do-ha, 2) Sha-on is going on indefinite hiatus, and 3) anything or anyone not bringing in money gets cut loose. Most notably, struggling boy group Atlantis is disbanding.

Interestingly, when these orders get spun into rumors that J Entertainment is cutting Do-ha off because of the whole murder thing, Deuk-chan freaks out — that’s not what he wanted! He frantically texts Do-ha that the headlines don’t reflect his actual feelings, and that’s when he gets the call informing him his wife has filed for divorce. (If he’s not the killer, I am going to feel so incredibly sorry for him. The guy cannot catch a break.)

My Lovely Liar: Episodes 11-12

Do-ha is summoned to give his witness testimony now that the case is re-classified as murder. Against his mother’s orders, he tells the complete truth this time: after he left Eom-ji on the beach, he just kept walking all night. (Neither remembers yet, but we saw back in Episode 1 that Sol-hee drove right past him on her way home from a job.) This, of course, contradicts the alibi Deuk-chan furnished, and Jin-hyuk quickly flips a switch to keep it off the record.

See, there’s an interesting dynamic going on where Jin-hyuk and Do-ha’s mom are trying to protect Do-ha (and thereby themselves) by covering up the truth — but in actuality they’re just making him more suspicious to anyone like Kang-min who looks close enough to spot the holes.

My Lovely Liar: Episodes 11-12

Meanwhile, Eom-ho’s reopened grief spurs him to finally track down Do-ha’s address. He hides in the dark stairwell so he can stab Do-ha as soon as he exits the elevator… except it’s not Do-ha. It’s the lead singer of Atlantis, ETHAN (Baek Seung-do). He’s the brother of convenience store part-timer Young-jae, and he was sent to Do-ha’s door by that one plagiarizing composer who refuses to leave the narrative (not that I mind watching Sol-hee and her employees put him soundly in his place).

Do-ha arrives just as Eom-ho realizes he’s stabbed the wrong person. Sol-hee hears the struggle and peeks out, and Do-ha pushes her back inside and slams the door shut. So she calls the police, and then rushes back outside to try and stop Eom-ho from strangling Do-ha.

Thankfully, Kang-min arrives just in time to save both their skins. While he takes their statements, he scolds them — Sol-hee for endangering herself and Do-ha for letting Eom-ho get away before. (Though to be fair, the police have had several opportunities to detain him since.)

In more good news, Ethan isn’t critically injured. Do-ha covers his expenses and apologizes, but neither Ethan nor Young-jae blames him. Even so, Do-ha internalizes Kang-min’s point that everyone around him is getting hurt while he skates by with only a few minor bruises. Sol-hee, on the other hand, points out that he’s suffering internally if not physically. Emboldened by her words and her presence, he stands up to the reporters who swarm him, stating definitively that he didn’t kill Eom-ji and that he hid because no one believed him — just like now.

Thanks to a tip from Deuk-chan’s brother, JAE-CHAN (Nam Hyun-woo) — who comes begging for money after Deuk-chan refused to bail him out of debt — Do-ha goes searching for Eom-ji’s father. At first, Do-ha asks Sol-hee to stay behind, promising to return safely. But she follows him not long after, and they meet on the beach where he and Eom-ji parted.

My Lovely Liar: Episodes 11-12 Kim So-hyun Minhyun

Together, they trace Eom-ji’s father to a bank (where they’re told he gleefully collected her life insurance payout) and then to a gambling den. They fail to bluff their way in, but as luck would have it, the place is owned by the very same gang boss Sol-hee helped five years ago, and he’s delighted to see her again.

A familiar face is waiting inside: Jae-chan, who knew all along Eom-ji’s father would be here. In fact, he knows an awful lot about Eom-ji, even things Do-ha didn’t know. He says he didn’t have a crush on her, but like many things he says, it’s a lie. Before Do-ha can press for more, however, their true target appears. Do-ha throws Eom-ji’s father to the ground and asks outright if he killed her… but we’ll have to wait until next week to hear his answer and whether it’s truthful.

I was a little afraid that Sol-hee would be swayed by Kang-min’s doubts, especially during that piano duet scene where she tried unsuccessfully to hide how worried she was. So it was extra heartwarming to watch her double down and plant herself firmly in Do-ha’s corner. Just as he’s learned to “read” when she’s fibbing that everything is fine, she’s learned to read what kind of support he needs in a given situation — whether it be sending food to comfort him after his questioning or showing up in person even though he thinks he should handle things on his own.

I can’t bring myself to care overly much about the side couples — specifically the two shopkeepers and Sol-hee’s parents (the latter of whom briefly reconnected this week) — but I do appreciate the contrast with our main couple. Where Do-ha and Sol-hee’s relationship is built on communication and trust, the others flounder due to misunderstandings and lies — both to each other and to themselves. Of course, Sol-hee’s lie detector is an advantage in that department, but as Do-ha proved in earlier episodes, it’s possible to communicate openly and honestly for honesty’s sake alone and not just because you’ll be caught if you lie.

I’ve been working up some light MLL prognostication over on the Fan Wall thanks to the patient reading and listening offered by @lapislazulii and @mmmmm. Here’s how it’s going. @mistyisles and my Fellow Beanies, see what you think.

What if the progression of this drama ends up having been:

**4 episodes of set-up in which fans patiently waited for Minhyun to take off that freakin’ mask already and show his face more.
**6 episodes of a drama called My Lovely Liar which was a really sweet show about a Liar Hunter (who has interesting and often very funny cases that we get to see and experience) who falls in love with a star K-pop song writer. This song writer, in turn, grapples with his relationship to his most prominent star singer, because she reminds him of a terrible ex-girlfriend, and is also working through his business dealings with a struggling owner of an entertainment company, a man he grew up with but who has secrets to hide. The Liar Hunter, it so happens, had also been engaged to a very nice policeman in the past who now wants her back, and so we get to see her weighing relationship choices that seem to represent her youth as well as her current, slightly more seasoned, age.
**3 episodes of CSI: Lies at Hakcheon Beach in which our 2ML glares at our ML even more intently than he did in My Lovely Liar because he is being shown actually doing his police job.
**3 episodes of My Lovely Idol Drama in which Do-ha leads Atlantis to the top of the charts.

If this is how it's gonna be, then I'm still in! Well, I’d have also been in for 16, well, 12 episodes of the show described in the second bullet point. I might have even been ready for 12 episodes of Minhyun idol drama, who knows!!

What I am sad to say is that I don't particularly relish the thought of four more episodes of scowling (2ML), emoting-disguised-as-confused-blank-staring (ML), prevarication (FL and all the moms), "Antonio Banderas Bee Sting Face" (self-explanatory), and slimy fraternal behavior (our sus crime bros). Perhaps the Stars Hollow [Gilmore Girls] comic relief trio might consider whipping the rest of the cast into shape, maybe by allowing Cassandra to scream in all their faces Goblin-style until they each get...with...the…program ;)

I love this breakdown of the phases of the drama and the potential move into a direction no one wants.

I am querying the purpose of "Antonio Banderas Bee Sting Face". They spent all that time showing he is a wilderness survivor; gaining the attention of the documentary makers, he explains that standing still leads to the bees going away and yet he is the one stung and in the eye at that 😬

I really do not understand (our sus crime bros)’. The random call from the wife’s divorce lawyer only emphasised that no one cares about that storyline not even Deukchan at the point of discovering the affair. The beg everyone for money to just waste it gambling and feel no ways about being caught Jaechan, just needs to have some decency beaten in to him by the crime boss’ boys already. He has no redeeming features, no wonder he didn’t stand a chance with Eomji.

That eye patch was weird, right? I started to wonder if the actor had a stye or something…I mean it’s possible!!

I remain committed to enjoying myself here, but am sad that things don’t appear to be congealing.

I was watching the weekender Three brave siblings (waste of time show) but one of the actors was not or present during a storyline I expected him to be all over as he had been a supportive brother up to that point and his brother really needed him. He then reappeared with a sling that no one referred to so I guessed it was a real life injury. I felt bad for him working when sick and didn’t understand why they did not write it into the storyline one sentence was all that was needed.

I think the eye pad scene is just one of the scenes that show the intention of the direct/writer to lighten up the mood of the viewers. The crime investigation is ongoing, so I think it was intentionally done as an effort to lighten up the mood. I'm used to such humor by now, as there have been scenes like this sprinkled over the course of the show up until now. *_*

I'm kinda on board for the My LoveLy Idol Drama though, I prefer that over the CSI interlude. Your breakdown reminds me a little of Tale of Nine Tailed Two in those eps were they do the meta switch between all the different drama genres HAHAHA

NGL, I had you and @hopefulromantic in mind with the Gilmore Girls reference :)

I hadn’t made the ToNT2 connection, but absolutely! Soon, there can be a scene here in MLL, even, where all the characters realize that they’re suddenly in a drama!! We’ll see all the cameras, and then the shot will pan back, and we’ll find, I don’t know, Gong Yoo and Lee Dong-wook there…and they’ll act out some random scene from Goblin with “Cassandra.” Like one from Canada where LDW is suddenly the Canadian waiter in that restaurant and Park Kyung-hye is Eun-tak…maybe Minhyun could sing a duet with the Baker guy who, it turns out, can sing…have I gone on too long with this thought?

you have not, keep going, it's brilliant!! surely a callback to the Do-ha NIS skit has to be included again too but this time when he's tracking down the killer! or since we've all made the scooby-doo connection, maybe turning the tarot shop crew into the scooby-doo gang while they all play detective too 😆

I forgot about that amazing skit!! Absolutely to all of this. We have Scooby-doo, the Addams Family, Jason Bourne (or whoever you want Minhun-Spy to be)…more shout-outs than the Butt Show at this point 🙈

PS: To show I can sometimes stay on topic, I think the “Sus Bros” didn’t kill her—they may have buried her, but didn’t kill her. However, I also think Do-ha’s mom knows exactly how she died…

5

I love the NIS callback idea🤣 and the bodyguard and Cassandra turning up to do random things to catch the culprits proper Scooby do style. At this rate someone is going to call The A-Team.

5

I love this exchange, and I love this idea, but... I've never watched Gilmore Girls! I watched the first episode and very strongly disliked it 😬 Yikes sorry!! I dropped this way back in ep 5, but I've still been following along with the recaps and comments. I'm sorry to hear that it's fizzling in an unsatisfactory way with a lot of the subplots. But I also feel vindicated with my early drop, lol 😅 I hope it ends well for you guys!!!!!

Ha! Well, to each their own, and I may have had the wrong show in mind for you…but I did have you in mind :)

I think many folks are still enjoying this show for exactly what it is, and I certainly don’t dislike any part of it. It’s just, as you say, fizzling or scattered. Now that I say this, I wonder if it won’t be much better binged.

FUTURE BEANIE ALERT: I think this drama might be much better if you don’t have to wait a week between episode pairs and you can just go through watching what you want to watch and skipping what/who you want to skip!!

7

For a second I thought I was on the DWY thread and I was like NOO don't go just yet Hopeful!

4

@attiton - that's a really interesting observation. I think there are some dramas that do work best binged (or at least watched consecutively all through), because it impedes the ability to be overly critical. If I had watched this as a "binge" in between other dramas, I likely would've stuck around longer. And then there are others that work best at watching two eps a week because of the time to think and analyze (and sometimes to calm down) 😁 It's always frustrating when a drama starts to feel scattered. It's like a good recipe going wrong, even with all the right ingredients there.

6

Lol don't worry @lapislazulii!! I'm still 100% on board the DWY train!!! 😄

3

@attiton I agree binge watch is the way to go with this drama as the cliff hangers are often fake outs.
I am also still enjoying the drama it’s just the annoying characters/sub plots aka filler that we can all see could have been excluded if they had gone with the 12 episode format.

Let me just point out that I personally would never think of spoiling anyone's enjoyment of a drama by predicting the ending by doing an intelligent analysis of what preceded it, unlike some people.

But let me also say that I'm getting a little tired of fantasy dramas that depend on eloquent analysis by @attiton to be meaningful (yes, I am also talking about the cartoon show Moving)

Here's what I'm thinking about all these dramas. They start out light and fun, with a fantasy power which translates into a potentially interesting real life metaphor-- in this case, the nature of truth and deceit (or, it could be the impact of the past on our current lives; or what makes us human, or, the challenge of parenting a unique child; or, how much our birth destiny influences our lives; or--predicting a theme about an upcoming show-- becoming something other than our true self when we are in love, etc. etc.) But then through a pretentious belief that to be profound they have to drop the comedy, and through weak writing and unfortunate direction that focuses on ancillary themes, the promise of the fantasy is lost, and we just get a somewhat dreary reality with a no longer fun fantasy.

The issue with this one is not the inclusion of the murder mystery--that was there from the beginning. It is, as @attiton says, that these last two episodes almost totally lost the focus on the liar hunter, the key to not only the fantasy but also the larger significance of the show! (Also in my opinion what was most enjoyable about the show.)

So to engage in a little prognostication of my own, someone like me can be slightly satisfied when the show ends with a sweet kiss between the main couple, as I think this one will; or be irritated when it ends with a less than happy ending in what seems to be all fantasy writers ambitions-- to write tragic endings like "serious" drama writers.

But in the end I'll feel that the show really wasn't worth the time I put into it, unless @attiton is wrong in her prognostication, and the show returns to the focus on My Lovely Liar. But of course that is unlikely to happen, since @attiton is not wrong very often!

As always, you know how much I appreciate your attention and support, @hacja. I don't know if I could emphasize enough, however, how much more interested I would be in talking about my commentary over on last week's Moving post than about my comment above. It's not that MLL isn't worth our collective attention--it absolutely is--it's that I, personally, find that other drama meatier, cartoon-y though it is (I agree).

I had a good chuckle reading your comment! And thanks for tagging me.

You really have a good sense of humor. I always feel sorry for the SML, especially in this case, because it seems like the director needed him to pain-gaze just about everyone. Kudos to the actor to be able to deliver.

While I agree that the writing isn't the most consistent one here, it's not too bad. The scene at the beginning when the FL saw him walking on a road is sure lead to the ML having a witness for his innocence in the near future, and that gang head owning the gambling den also appeared in the first scene of the show. To me, random appearances of characters, whether major or minor, seem to lead to something in the show. I think I'm quite positive that the townspeople will come into play in standing up for DH in the next eps.

I'm sure DH will help the Atlantis's lead singer and his brother in setting up their own record label. The singer seems to have improved at singing, and the younger brother seems quite talented in writing songs. With some help and mentorship from DH, I'm sure they will become a good music agency. This way, the three of them can work freely and healthily without being controlled by DC's agency.

I'm not sure how many episodes My Lovely Idol drama will last, but I'm quite sure we will get there. lol

4 dramas for the cost of one?

Definitely could do away with **4 episodes of masked Minhyun

My Lovely Liar
Rom-com with heart fluttering otp moments with a side of Luni's Tarot Cafe client "cases that we get to see and experience". I'm here for it! 12 episodes ideal length but at a stretch even 16 episodes.

CSI: Lies at Hakcheon Beach
Can't bear these happenings for more than half an episode length (30 minutes) spread across the entire drama length.

My Lovely Idol Drama
Do I want to hear Minhyun sing? Hmm, low-key interested. Maybe a combo pack of My Lovely Liar Idol Drama, with a little more emphasis on Cafe clients, please.

Definite no-nos all points elaborated by Seon-ha for remaining episodes.
"Antonio Banderas Bee Sting Face" put him in jail and throw away the key. In jail counseling recommended. "Slime fraternal behavior (our sus crime bros)". Couldn't care less.

I’m still really enjoying this show. We’ve spent some time establishing the adorable relationship and trust between our leads and now they can take on the mystery together. And with five years and a whole lot of lies between them and the truth, I’m so glad they are working together on this. Do-ha certainly needs all the help he can get, and Sol-hee is pretty uniquely positioned to be useful!

I could use a little more from Eom-ho. He seemed to be making some progress in the past few episodes as Do-ha dropped a few truth bombs and then helped him evade capture. Do-ha is totally right that even though he feels responsible, he’s not the only one who should feel responsible, and it seems clear that at least some of Eom-ho’s violent anger is really anger at himself - blame that he’s projecting onto Do-ha to keep himself from feeling the brunt of it. But then that just seemed to evaporate in episode 11 with the discovery of her body, and he went right back into stalk-and-attack mode. I get it - if you think your sister’s murderer is living a carefree life it makes sense to be mad, even more so if you don’t think the police did a good job in the initial investigation (and it’s looking more and more like they didn’t), plus the added stress of her body finally being discovered - but we were starting to get some nuance from him and I feel like he’s taken some steps backward this week. I’m still interested to see where he ends up.

Last week there was some talk about the murder mystery in this show, and how it isn’t as interesting as it might be because we don’t know enough of the backstories of our suspects and how they might be connected to the situation or each other. I was in pretty solid agreement with those sentiments, but this week I feel like the drama answered that a bit. Rather than being exciting because they’ve laid out all the evidence and allow us to pick the things we think are significant, this mystery is exciting because we get to experience the reveals with the main characters and as they find out new info. From that angle, I really like that we don’t know exactly how Deuk-chan and Shady Brother are connected to the whole situation. It makes sense that they would have known Eom-ji because they knew Seung-joo, but we have no idea what their relationship with her was. I like that we keep seeing more of how Do-ha/Seung-joo’s mom might be working stuff behind the scenes, but only little by little. And I like that we can see Deuk-chan getting more and more desperate as his life spirals out of his control, but we don’t know if there is more than bad publicity at stake for him as more of the truth gets revealed. I’m having fun holding the tension along with our leads, and it makes every lie reveal from Sol-hee really impactful!

‘ this mystery is exciting because we get to experience the reveals with the main characters and as they find out new info’ 👈🏾 I get it’s a small town but the ease of getting the info really shows how ridiculous it would be for one police officer to cover everything up. The multiple people trampling over a potential murder victim crime scene was again beyond ridiculous. I get Jinhyuk is distracted by his daughter’s care needs but Kangmin can not be the only police officer with some sense in that station.

Agree with you here. i personally find it more satisfying to just let the writers tell the story as they want to , rather than me setting up some expectation on where the story should be. So this style of peeling of the layers of mystery to us at the same time as the leads is interesting to me.

The OTP continues to be adorable together. Kang=min needs to learn a thing or two about communication from them, and then can we please get him a nice girl of his own?

Watching Deuk-chan unravel is stressful. And, uh-oh, little bro had a crush on Eom-Ji. Both these things open up new perspectives, and bring up new suspicions.

The parents in this drama continue to be horrible people, especially the mothers. The Jury's out on Sol-hee's dad. He seems cool enough, but he also doesn't seem to be a part of her life, so not off to a good start.

I do like that we got a little more back story this week, and that we're learning things along with the characters. I didn't like that Eom-ho went back into violent rage mode again, after it seemed he was beginning to self reflect. He really is a character in an incredible amount of pain.

I am guessing he doesn’t know and look forward to seeing what he is going to do when he finds out. A violent father and son combo is never good so I wonder if Eonho was beaten when he was small but then dad moved on when he realised he was too big to be intimated. He probably only turned up at the house when he thought the brother wasn’t there. I don’t get how come he didn’t get the bank book back off him when he saw his Eonji’s distress that day.

That makes sense to me, that dad would only show up when it was just Eom-ji who he could easily bully. I wondered why he didn't get her bank book back for her as well. The best he could do was to encourage her to latch on the the rich kid as the only way to better her situation? That's not support, that's just feeding her desperation.

9

*Eomji

2

@firewife5 Agreed. There was a brief moment when we saw DH’s words about Emoji’s constant saying that DH was her only dream and hope hit him because those were his own words. He was on a killing spree because of his own inability to protect his sister and provide her with good guidance. His love and rage at what happened to his sister doesn’t make others more responsible for his sister’s death. He didn’t or doesn’t want to or can’t think of this. He is too dangerous for the society. Unless he comes to his senses, he should be put behind the bar.

His father is no different, or probably even worse.

I think Eom Ho and his sister are/were both characters in need of intensive therapy. He does not have any coping strategies except violence, as modeled by his father. Seems to be all they knew. Where was their mom? Ran away? Died after abuse? No other support for the kids? Eom Ji's plan was to escape by glomming onto and manipulating Do Ha. Eom Ho is reactive and violent. He needs therapy, probably medication, and if nothing else, prison.

Thanks for the weecap @mistyisles

Did everyone know there was a convenient grave in the mountains that could be used to bury a new body without arousing suspicion? That whole scene was weird and came out of nowhere for me.

I think Jaechan was a sore loser, he loved Eomji he thought he could swoop in when she was upset because she was rejected by Doha and when he was rejected again he killed her maybe accidentally e.g. she fell and banged her head trying to escape his advances.

The Scooby doo amateur investigation over something so important makes no sense as anything Solhee and Doha find will easily be seen as harassment or manipulation. I can see Kangmin coming to the rescue (again) and this time getting hurt as it will be third time unlucky.

Doha’s mum is a piece of work, I can’t understand how she is still in the politician’s office negotiating with those higher up in the system. They would have removed her from the building asap and potentially sued her for the impact she had on the party image.

Solhee’s mum is a joke, she is a perfect over the top mother in law from a bad weekender, I do not understand why is she being played so over the top; trashing the room one week, walking in the office screaming at Solhee to reject Doha the next. Her presence literally grates on my nerves. The actress has played unlikeable characters many times more realistically, so I don’t understand why they chose her then made her act in this way. They should have just gone with Kim Sunyoung who is the queen of shouty mum’s (maybe they tried her first and she turned it down to save her voice for once).

Also hermit dad, what’s the point of his existence? Why does he maintain a minimal relationship with his daughter through pictures without words? There was another drama where a dad decides to step away from society and live in the wilderness, I think it was Monthly magazine. I wonder how realistic this character is within Korean society.

I also was surprised Do-ha's mum hadn't been removed from office yet - feels like just a scandal based on rumours is enough to really negatively damage image and brand these days, let alone something as significant as this. But yeah, I also do not like the mum one bit and it was a struggle to not fast-forward through her scenes - honestly same with Sol-hee's mum too.

I like that DoHa and SolHee got each other's back regardless of whatever ia happening around them. They remain cute and adorable together.
I do not like any of their parents though. One is a screechy mess with an absentee ex-hubby and the other is an emotionally absent politician that only makes her son more suspicious with her meddling.

4 episodes left. I hope DoHa will help Ethan and his brother with their careers. Maybe start his own music label away from Deuk Chan.
I sure hope we get to see more of SolHee's cases or maybe a career shift?

The bar could have talent nights so aspiring singer song writers could get their work before a live audience and scouts could pick them up.

I think the beanies rewrite crew are part of the reason we love this community. It makes the wait so much more interesting as we see which ones were played out and which were better/worse than what is actually happens in the drama.

I used to love the ending of the US comedy Soap which always ended with a voice over listing ridiculous questions about what could happen in the next episode and end with a phrase like ‘tune in next week to find out’. That’s the approach I use🤣 so I don’t care if it turns out I was on the wrong track completely ☺️

No, I have not heard of that one. I just checked and Soap and the spin off Benson were the only two shows I can see that were connected. I wasn’t allowed to watch Soap as it was risqué and was a satire of the day time soap operas of the day. The spin off Benson was much milder and we loved it because it was a Black main character. I think I found out that the Benson character had been in the show Soap years later when I was older.

Him planting doubts about the sleeping pills (a stretch), and then guilt-tripping the ML thus goading him to his noble idiocy philosophy is annoying. Glad that it did not last and the OTP decided they will work together after all.

My thoughts this week are small and scattered, mainly because I’m not particularly invested in anything but the OTP at this stage:

* Sol-hee was not my favourite person in ep 11 - I’ve been lukewarm to her tendency to lie quite a bit, purely because ok sure who doesn’t lie (Kim Doha apparently) BUT I really thought she could’ve given Do-ha the heads up about the body and just been honest about what was on her mind when he asked. But Ep 12 Sol-hee was much better - which makes me think that maybe I was just finding her eh when the script wasn’t giving her much to do, because the minute she started being less passive and more active I re-found her likability!

* Can Kang-min teleport?? That was like a few minutes between Sol-hee calling him and him appearing to take down Eom-ji’s brother, and he didn’t even take the elevator!

* Okay so I think I get what’s going on now - Deuk-chan’s brother killed Eom-ji and Deuk-chan helped him cover it up and they both used it to manipulate Do-ha for their own gains. Though few dozen holes in that theory including, wouldn’t they bet better off if they just let Do-ha take the blame? Why bother providing him with an alibi?

Why bother providing him with an alibi?’ 👈🏾 This is my take too but as you said there are too many loop holes as it would make more sense to make sure that Doha took the hit and thus provide themselves with water tight alibis. Unless Doha’s mum sorted out the money to set up the record label and once success took off greed took over.

I still don’t get Deukchan having a hidden manky apartment he had not done anything with in a town he has no links with. It would make more sense to own a building as an investment but why keep it from his wife.

I didn't think about how Do-ha's mum could play into the theory - what you said sounds plausible!! The only other reason I could think of them helping Do-ha out even if they directly had something to do with her death is if the company was already founded at that point and they couldn't afford to loose Do-ha??

And yes very good point - wat's with the apartment and why keep it a secret from your family? Can't tell if it's just a case of 'spent money and don't want to tell my partner' or something else.....

Required fields are marked *

Yes, because if it was kitted out as a love nest or a place for the artists to use in times of scandal or as an investment it would make sense but unless it was a recent acquisition it made no sense. I am sure the wall had a shadowy shape that looked like a police mark out of a body which I am sure freaked out Doha the first night he was there before it was decorated.

8
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

OH RIGHT! All these little details you all are remembering! That shadowy death patch that got wallpapered over!!!

5

Yes, I just remembered that shadowy shape too. What if Eom Ji was killed there? Maybe after the beach incident, one or both brought her there and an altercation happened ( or EomJi still set on going after Doha) and then one of them or both decided to bury the body on that hill. Time and day of death could not be determined and it does not have to be on the same day, just said approx 5 years based on rate of decay. And there was an interval before police arrested Seungjo, she was just missing for a few days then.

6

@jingbee good point about the potential reason for owning that random apartment. It seems to be some distance from the beach so not sure why they would have taken her to that town especially as she would have already been bleeding from her cut and she was quite loud and hysterical when she was last seen by Doha. They also left her shoes behind so it feels like they left in a hurry. It would lean towards accidental death. It makes sense for her to be buried close to their home town as they would know the local terrain and we saw it was accessible by car.
I wonder if shady brother one and two are linked in some way to what happened but are not the murderers by accident or intention as someone I think @attition pointed out somewhere but I can’t see it.

4

Oh yes I forgot about that creepy outline!!

I don't believe the brothers brought Eom Ji to the apartment and killed her, either accidentally or on purpose; it's too far away from that beach. Sol Hee mentioned the long drive when she gave Do Ha food for the trip, so this would not make sense. And then to bring her body all the way back to hide it? Plus the shadowy mark up on the wall was unusual, as opposed to on the floor. Though wouldn't that be a terrible irony if Do Ha - innocent yet suspected of murdering his ex - is now living in the same place where she was murdered by someone else?! Insert Twilight Zone theme music...

I CAN imagine, however, the brothers returning to that secret apartment, and one of them, tired and muddy after hours spent digging a grave, leaning up against the wall for a moment, leaving a grimy smudge...

2

@goyangi I am loving the grubby outline theory😊 I thought who tries to run away from an attacker against a wall so it did it make sense for the outline to be there and not a window or a door.

2

omg I had totally forgotten about that shadow mark thing in the apartment, great pick up @reply1988

I still am having a good time watching this show week after week. I never liked murder mystery drama, but I seem to have to problem with this one. I guess it's because the crime is at the forefront of the whole drama -the ML as the prime suspect, and the FL's extraordinary ability to detect lies. So to me, the theme of the show has been consistent from the beginning (though I thought it would have taken the lighter and more fun road). There are some more boring parts here and there, but to me the show doesn't take itself too seriously (even when it has the crime as the core), and that makes it a fun watch still.

My only gripe is that I don't like explicitly violent scene. I think I'm old-fashioned, but the knife should have been blurred. It doesn't add anything to the story to see that very sharp and scary knife being held by a man who has been on a killing spree.

I think I believe that every character in this show plays nothing in the overall story. So I'm holding on to the belief that the townspeople will have a part to play when it comes to the big unravelling of the crime and the general public's sentiment towards Do-ha. This is why I don't have any problem with these supposedly minor characters. I don't think how blatant the townswoman is, but she doesn't seem like a bad person. Perhaps, just seemingly a bit rude. The townspeople (apart from the baker) might not look like the best group to hang out with, but they are surely better than the ones that have been close to DH and SH; their family members, sadly, included.

5
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I so agree with how deadly bad intentions can be. I'm thinking the blurred knives are also an age-related TV censor guideline... dependant on what time the show is aired in Korea. At least by obscuring the images on tv it helps minimize the normalization of seeing knives wielded by people with bad intentions in everyday life. On the same note, Korea does not have a gun culture. Ownership isn't common because South Korean
Gun policies are some of the most restrictive in the world. You rarely see police studying bullet shells or tracing gun numbers in dramas. I read online that knives have traditionally been censored/blurred on tv, although not the large swords used in historical dramas (likely because they aren't used today and are less likely to become normalized?) The Korean Communications Standards Commission has said its intent was to censor "for anything that might cause excessive shock, anxiety or disgust to viewers." Earlier, tattoos were also obscured by pixilating them. Cigarettes too weren't seen as family friendly and used to be one of the most often censored (until recently when we've begun to see more characters smoke). I certainly don't mind it. As you said, it's the "bad intentions" of the person holding the weapon that chills the heart; but also for me, the less we all see of weapons on tv, the better.

I’m not particularly invested on any of the side characters, specially the romance between salad girl and bar owner. Maybe I’d like them more if they weren’t so annoying in the beginning? Rooting for Shaon’s egg fan though even if I still don’t like Shaon. But, I still need to know the song in the bar concert scene and who actually sings - not sure it’s the actress.

Never been a fan of SML even though he ironically reminds me of one of my kpop biases 😔. This week is his worst with the victim blaming. He is so unprofessional. 😒

Thankfully, OTP continues to be adorable even without a lot of “grand moments” between them like in other dramas. I love the scene where Doha closed the door to protect Solhee but I can’t for the life of me understand why he didn’t go inside too 😫 I adore their beach scene though and LOVE the Minhyun OST that came with it. 🥹 Solhee got cooler again too!🥰

Dude we know you messed by your chance with FL with your noble idiocy and all ... but now just move on and give her your blessings. Do ha is a better man and a better partner for her.
Sidenote - am I the only one who hates Solee lying to Do ha ... I know it is petty lies and just to keep the peace but it feels somewhat deceptive, especially when you freak out with every little lie you hear.

7

Her lying all the time to anyone, when it suits and without a second thought, is a major irritant for me. If she wasn’t making a living out of pointing out other people’s lies then I would let her be as most people lie at some point, sometimes with good intent. I find it really hypocritical especially like in the proposal scene where that woman felt so tortured. However, I also accept that when she is paid to check on lying it’s because people already suspect something isn’t right and are potentially hoping to avoid the consequences that come with the situation e.g. being scammed out of money etc.

4

@reply1988

So glad I'm not the only one to feel unsettled by the FL's self-serving lies.

3

2

Thanks for the recap!

This week's episodes recaptured my attention. I think for me, the attraction of a show like this is the characters acting within the specifications of their characters or powers. If we have a FL with the power to detect lies, and a ML who feels deceived, every moment where she listens to him, believes him, or detects that others are lying to him, is very satisfying. On the other hand, the ML's special power is his music, but that's not especially interesting as a plot point. His secret power over the FL that he's driven to be very honest. He's also good at recognizing and supporting others' talents. Every moment when he is using his music to connect with others and support their talents is a satisfying moment for her and for the audience.

Which is why, even though I know you all hate murder mysteries in romances, I am finding the process of solving the murder mystery the most satisfying aspect of this drama. There was never a question about whether they liked each other. In fact, they liked each other in the prequel to the whole story, when they met on the bus. But there is some tension and question about how each of them will work out their issues, and it's satisfying to see them do that.

This is a really wholesome summary of what's good about this drama! I'm glad you're enjoying it, murder mystery included!

I think the difference with the murder mystery here is because it was the backdrop of the ML character sketch, and the aftereffects as well as the unraveling of that mystery are part of their growth journey as characters (i.e him starting to be confident once again, and her realizing that there is more to the truth (and lies) than just what the bell tells her.

While the other stories (CCR and Cheer Up comes to mind) , the murder mystery was just a devise to manufacture tension, nothing else.

There was probably a way for them to just deal with their terrible parents without his ridiculous level of trauma, but that would have been less interesting. Living with the guilt of walking away from his suicidal girlfriend is the right level for a drama. It also makes his mother’s absolute callousness much starker.

Ik this week was trauma and angst time, but I didn't expect to be kinda bored tbh. It was just the worst possible ppl being, you guessed it, the worst.

Even when psycho bro was back at it again, the only reaction I had was "ugh, here he goes stabbing again 🙄"

I think a lot of the momentum was lost when they a) got together as a couple b) shared each other's tragic backstory. it would have been better if this drama was 12 episodes and equally focused on Sol-hee's own adventures or something.

Praying for the day Sol-hee cuts off her mom 🙏 also for her poor dad to find himself a baddie and live in peace

P.S. did this oppa teleport to their building or something? How did he arrive so fast to stop the stabbing?

The mystery plot line is boring, but I still kinda want to know who the real killer is tbf

"also for her poor dad to find himself a baddie and live in peace" I could cry laughing at this sentence, I agree wholeheartedly though 😂

I loved the scene on the beach when Sol Hee meets Do Ha. She's literally there for him, at the place where he feels most sad and lost, to hold him and help him to know he's not alone. As others have commented, I'm also very glad this couple is not going the noble idiocy route, they talk with each other. How novel.
