(1) Next week, the two impossible Kdramas will begin to air: Wedding Impossible (TvN) and The Impossible Heir (Disney+)
(2) I saw reports that great Kpop producer Shinsadong Tiger found dead today.
(3) My interested article of the week was from the viral video on X (formerly Twitter) about the most disgusted, worst Japanese part-time male employee at Domino's Pizza that such act intended to be funny. (For me, it was totally unfunny at all in this viral video.) This viral X video, filmed on February 12 at 2am in Amagasaki, Hyogo prefecture, showed that he picked up his booger and then put it in raw pizza dough. Then, this viral video tarnished company image and its reputation by netizens began questioning on the brand's commitment to hygiene. After that, it quickly went into backlash by netizens began instead patronized the other (pizza) competitors after avoided eating Domino's Pizza with a booger and Domino's Pizza (Japan) then apologized for inconvenience. After that, Domino's Pizza (Japan) will taking legal action against this most disgusted male employee and the one who filmed this viral video. I hope this Japanese Domino's Pizza worst male employee will be officially fired without warning and forever banning from working at Domino's Pizza Amagasaki branch before he will completely losing job with now-unemployed after filmed viral video on doing improper hygiene.

I don't eat out very often partly because restaurant hygiene is just not as good as at home. Even at home sometimes we forget things, you know? And even when we're cooking for ourselves or loved ones, if we're in a rush, we may forget to wash our hands or not wash the vegetables well enough, or forget to use the right cutting board for the raw meat, etc. So imagine how much more careless overworked and underpaid cooks in a restaurant are with our food, right? It helps to have worked in a restaurant, then you see the problems. For example, we hate ordering salads. Vegetables are almost never washed properly or handled. Any veggies should be cooked, less risk of contamination. Also, the pizza gate grosses me out all over again about restaurant food. Great now I'll never order food again and have to cook for myself for the rest of my life lol

Japan has been experiencing a wave of what has come to be called "sushi terrorism," where people post videos of themselves contaminating food at sushi restaurants that serve food via conveyor belts--doing things like licking a sauce bottle and placing it back on the conveyor. It's a disgusting trend that's threatening to ruin the restaurant experience for everybody.

South Korean theater is having a mini-renaissance. Music theater has always been very popular, with top stars getting paid top movie star salaries. But the regular stage is doing well through some surprising trends.

Veteran actors aged 80 and over are making waves in the Korean theatrical circle, with their performances drawing sold-out crowds. The enduring appeal and talent of these seasoned performers, who seamlessly transition between the small screen and the stage, have brought plays to new heights of popularity here.

Leading the charge are Shin Goo, 87, and Park Geun-hyung, 83, who made the classic tragicomedy "Waiting for Godot" a great success, selling out all 50 shows.

In Korea, people in their 20s and 30s are the most enthusiastic about theater, but "Waiting for Godot" saw a significant number of middle-aged viewers flocking to theaters to see these veteran actors live on stage. According to ticket sales data from Interpark, people in their 40s were the largest group of ticket buyers at 24.7 percent, followed closely by those in their 30s, 50s and 20s.

Last year, plays like "Freud's Last Session," starring Shin, and "The Seagull" and "King Lear," featuring 89- year-old Lee Soon-jae, ranked among the top ticket-sellers according to Korea Arts Management Service.

Also, drama actors have also made their 2023 debuts on the stage. Kim Yoo-jung and Jung So-min made their theater debuts with “Shakespeare in Love.” Kim Sejeong made her theatrical debut with a play titled, “Temple.”

I have to say that all the stage actors who became drama actors have all been very impressive. They're so professional and well-trained.

It seems like the standards are a lot higher for stage actors than it is for drama actors. They're operating on a higher level coming into dramas.

That is what I have felt too. What's Up was Jo Jung Suk's first drama but his acting was already on a veteran level and he has since been always exceptional.

They should send Cha Eun Woo to the stage LOL

1

They just hit the ground running, don't they? It should be mandatory for new actors to spend some time in stage plays before appearing on the TV screen.

7

There are some great idols in musicals. I love Kim Jun-su's "Dracula."

6

@kiara I think Junsu's most famous role to date is Death in ELISABETH, he's reached an absolutely insane for a kpop idol level of ticket sales and critical acclaim with it. My own fave was in one of the reruns and did quite well, but nowhere near as great ofc.

Not to be empty worded - his iconic super creepy solo "The Last Dance" from it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WEzgSx-u58

5

I'm so glad Jo Jung Suk is getting a lot of love from "Captivating The King." I'm not watching it, but I read the comments.

6

@gikata,

Yes! ❤️ I can usually tell which show he is in from his hair color. 😂 Thank you for sharing. I want to watch it again. Have you watched "Death Note?" "Dracula" was my first Jun-su musical, so it will always have a special place in my heart. His voice is so distinctive that it cannot be confused with anyone else's. Love it!

4

@kiara *laughing hysterically at "guessing show by hair color" comment - so real in kpop world lol*

DEATH NOTE as in anime/manga (I think everyone collectively agrees that there is no live action series) or there's a musical too now? I watched anime AGES ago - gosh, time flies! - but dropped it after a certain widely beloved character's death point, read spoilers about how it ends, was like "yep, makes sense" and moved on. Hardly a huge fan, as you can guess)))

K-musicals looks and sound so good from the snippets I managed to hunt online. Such a pity they don't make DVD's to sell internationally.

Yes, his voice is fantastic and super distinctive))) He's probably my fave among all DBSK boys, even if I appreciate a lot Jaejoong's rock moments.

4

@gikata,
Sadly, we'll only watch part of it online, not the whole show. I don't think they will release it on DVD since musicals are meant to be experienced in person. Perhaps the discontinued older shows might have DVDs available."

I'm not into K-pop, but I have favorites from listening to OSTs, and Kyuhyun (Super Junior) and Jun-su have been my favorites for a long time.

4

@kiara I've been pretty into kpop for many years... not so much anymore - music trends changed way too much for my taste, groups I stanned experienced all kinds of killjoy things and currently I barely care as result.

The most I've heard of was one of the musicals releasing OST CD for some kind of anniversary... And ofc none of my faves tracks were there so I didn't bother.

Kyuhyun has an amazing voice too, but his OSTs/solo stuff are too sad for my taste generally. That was always super easy to predict - if SK general audience loves a certain ballad, I'm surely gonna hate it with passion lol)))

2

Most of my favorite actors are also stage actors. The confidence and infectious energy that electrify the audience are exciting to watch.

in some ways, stage actors are the real actors. a lot of drama actors these days (cough Cha Eun Woo cough) don't do much to win over the viewers.

6

it's that spirit of hustling and painstaking hours they spend rehearsing every line and move that shows and I can't help but respect

6

Stage acting does tend to require more training and craft, as you have to have the vocal and physical skills for your work to reach the back rows of the house, and you don't get to do multiple takes if something goes wrong. It's much easier to "cover" for weak acting skills on a film or TV project where you can edit out issues or choose your camera angles carefully.

Stage training for the win!

8

Cho Seung Woo managed to be a top actor in Chungmuro, dramaland, and musical theatre. I loved it when he acted with his friends in dramas. Lee Kyu Hyung and Choi Jae-woong in "Stranger", Jung Moon-sung and Park Sung Geun in "Divorce Attorney Shin" etc. I think he purposely try to recruit his fellow musical actors for the same drama/film.

10

I think this is part of the reason there's this perception that English actors are more "trained" than American actors because alot of the English actors we know of, especially the older ones, have done theater work. They're seen as thespians and acting is their craft.
That was even a Key and Peele sketch haha.

Honestly, I totally agree that if actors really want to improve their acting or challenge themselves, they should do theater work.

@wonhwa: Absolutely! Add to these the pressure of performing without forgetting your lines, and if you do forget the lines, you must improvise to keep it moving and still stay in the character. And oh, the adaptability to disasters - don't even start. The actor has to make it seem like it's part of the script. A glass broke? Skirt the area and grab the broom. Water spilled on bed? Get the bedsheet off. Mustache falling off? Hold it in place as if you are thinking while speaking. Technical glitch? Keep going. Partner forgot dialouge? Fill your time doing something that will remind them of what they need to say while you look natural. Hah! And you thought only the person who forgot the dialouge is in trouble!
When these actors come in front of the camera, they are without fail going to eat everyone else without that kind of a background.

Yes, live theatre brings its own very special set of challenges, and pretty much everything you mentioned has actually happened in shows I've worked on (my favorite is when the mustache does fall off, and then you have to find something remarkably like an sticky eyebrow in the chaos of backstage).

6

lol! And honestly they are so hilariously funny after the fact.
One of my fav snafu was when an actor switched dialogues in nervousness. The backstage went into an uproar while the audience tried to figure out what the heck happened.
Another one was when a child artist in a historical play got very bored and started break dancing.

7

This is pretty much akin to the British actors who trained for the stage (including doing Shakespeare) and then making the transition to film and TV and wowing everyone with their acting chops.

Undergoing rigorous stage training seems to be crucial for developing world-class acting skills,

These days a lot of theater producers (at least here in the U.S.) rely on casting big-name actors from tv and film who may have little or no stage experience, in order to draw an audience. Some major stars have earned poor reviews once they set foot on stage in front of a live audience. Savvy theatergoers know to wait until the star has left the production, and then see the show with an experienced stage actor in the role.

This is true for Korean actors, too, who have tried stage acting. It was obvious that Kim Yoo-jung and Jung So-min (mentioned above) were out of their element in "Shakespeare In Love," but the 3 lead actors (Lee Sang-yi, Kim Sung-cheol, and Jung Moon-sung) were so gracious towards them. There was no question who the stars of the show were—the 3 leading men.
I hope it was a growing experience for these girls, though, and the regular fans are probably happy that they went back to dramaland.

I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I think it's unfortunate that some famous film and movie actors are taking work away from accomplished stage actors who would do a much better job. On the other hand, if a famous actor is attracting new audiences to live theater, it's a good thing. Hopefully, they have a great experience and become regular theatergoers.

I have to give special praise to Daniel Radcliffe, who has a huge following from the Harry Potter films. He brings audiences into the theater in droves, and he's also a fabulous stage actor. I really admire him for setting aside his star status and choosing to appear in smaller, non-commercial plays. He's currently appearing on Broadway as the second male lead(!) in a lesser-known Stephen Sondheim musical, Merrily We Roll Along. Haven't gotten around to seeing it yet, but it's on my list.

4

Thank you for sharing! If there's one thing I love about the writers of SFD and QSD, it's their tendency to cast talented musical actors in their epic sageuks.

I'm so happy to see our talented grandpas doing well on stage. Park Geun-hyung will always be remembered for the classic SANDGLASS. Lee Soon-jae used to be the favorite sageuk grandpa. I rarely see him and other veterans due to the lack of epic sageuks.

My current favorite is the MONTE CRISTO musical with Kim Sung-Cheol, Seo In-guk, Lee Kyu-Hyung, and Go Eun-Seong.

I almost always recognize the tune but I almost never remember the titles. Anywho, when they sang that song, it sounded so theatrical, maybe operatic (if I'm remembering correctly) and I was like wow, I didn't know a ballad could sound like that haha. Interesting that Waiting for Godot would be so successful! These plays that are running are not your Broadway style big musicals but mostly intimate, thoughtful, philosophical plays---many from Europe (and written many years ago): Waiting for Godot, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, The Seagull, King Lear are just not the kind of plays that I think you would see often now since I would doubt they would bring in much money in New York. So, the theater scene in Korea/Seoul, must be much different. Any insight?

There have been highly successful revivals of some of these shows in NYC - a production of Waiting for Godot with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen did really well a few years back - but it often helps to have big name stars in them (I'm guessing the situation in Korea is probably similar).

As expected, it was first class all around!

5

Waiting for Godot was shown at the National Theater of Korea's smaller stage near Dongguk University. It seats 300. It had 50 show run. The average ticket price was $58. The gross receipts were about $870k(US). Not much by Broadway standards but for a small theater production it was quite good.
Korean musical productions began to soar in 2013 when gross receipts surpassed $300M (US). That is roughly 30 percent of Broadway.

Weather - 20-25 - cold mornings n evenings. It's intial spring as spring gives its weeks to summer.

overall it was above average HOT - cold season - all around. Less rain - less snow - more trouble for the summer.

And heated seas - lots n lots of precipitation and more storms - summer heat in atmosphere is lots of energy so can expect the biggest and most powerful summer n storms ever.

Heated January-February to April May i expect. then June-August i expect to be slightly different.

Overall - oh ho time -

Once in a time countries do go through an event that's same for everyone - that's extreme event. Most time it is huge rain causing flood.

I like to see weather forecast because it is interesting and entertaining - It also helps you out in real life - from economy to food.

It also acts as game which where you become analyst to see how much accurate you get/

All in all good way to spend time and good way to appreciate mother nature.

Farmer's protest - IT is every year's affair - Always fought at WTO. those who see WTO negotiations know that. Farming is not easy - especially in the absence of all the tech tools - all of it is for western farmers - who get huge subsidies and then at WTO their leaders fight against poor countries poor hard working farmers who are in complete shamble state.

Farming is a very risky business - investment in it has zero return - unless n untill u get subsidies from your govt. and almost every govt. provide subsidies to farmers in one way or other. Weather usually is moody and moody weather brings a lot more heartache n harm than anyone can expect and then you have to follow so many food sector laws n regulations that you just raise white flag. big corporations can invest in sector but they also fill the pockets of parties n politicians so they get their way pretty easily. ofcourse en user comes out as a big loser in all this too.

negotiations and juggling the budget n finances isn't as easy as it looks. Still western farmers have it better compared to asian farmers - i pick asia because huge population n huge % of it dependent upon farming.

There was this delusional who said idols r so political active n n right side - right article - woah - any song picked to make a very convenient point and to praise your idol. most celebrities shut their mouth in their face of govt. In almost all countries. so much for being democracies. Almost all actually side with the regime to get more benefits or have to face no issues in their life.

How many celebrities have the guts and actually speak?

To go ahead and say asian countries idols have in them to speak about politics - biggest joke. everyone toes the line and every1 actually is happily siding with that line. they are not forced. everyone has enough shit on them and enough to lose that they better stay with the tide.

Seriosuly, korean idols and agencies have no links with their politicial world - what a joke.

That explains to some extend also why political themes are sometimes, like, breathed into a drama, like something is wrong ... I guess, as a writer, you'd hope that people will finish the though themselves without the writer having to explain the whole thing.
A bit like the idea of giving out blank flyers, or Chico Buarque's famous song where a friend continuously starts to say something and ends up saying that "Here in Brazil we have football and Samba" - clearly, something is left unsaid.

Politics is a business and have very high stakes so why would you all any medium to get away from your hands. people point fingers at news media but forget that tv media essentially works as mode of expression of regime too.

There gets just too much investment in politics by top 1% that by no means it can be left in the hand of common man.

entertainment industry is one of the most exploitative one so its very easy to dig stuff on anyone. if there is no stuff - u go ahead n just cook some stuff. At the end of the day every1 has to toe the line.

Only very few have in it them to stand against any regime.
calling them govt. itself is praising them. every place just runs scam in d name of democracy.

Earlier this week, I saw Jim Caviezal (Passion of the Christ) was trending because apparently he declined working with Robert DeNiro because of his political beliefs. I don't know how true this actually is but it made me think of the Korean entertainment and how entertainers are banned/highly discouraged from discussing politics or even looking like they have any political beliefs or leanings.

I saw that entertainers are forbiddened from wearing certain colors, instead just wearing black on election days, or not making certain gestures because it can be mistaken for supporting political candidates.

Although I am 100% for free speach for the common person, I am on the side of the entertainers and athletes to stay away from political issues due to the possibility of them being used in nefavorious ways. We already have them do it in movies and dramas. Just like the regular John Doe can be ousted from their place of work for comments made on online social media nowadays, they should also. It's the politician job to advertise and present their agenda. If they cannot do it, they should stay out of it. There are some jobs, like being a judge or teacher, that carry a lot of responsibilities and should be free of political influence. Stars also, by the influence they can have over their massive number of fans.

Well, when artists express their own opinions, they are often pretty smart, or at least good. They are not on the ballot, so they don't need to pretend that one political side is perfect.
I am not sure why artists so often have wise opinions, but maybe, when you use your soul in your job, you will mostly need to have integrity, and so it is harder to lie to yourself about major injustices?
Or the cultural capital comes with (often) some feeling for other than self; people in other and sometimes very hard situations, and the connection between past and future - which would make you worry about people who suffer and about climate change, to take an example.

Well, I don't doubt their wisdom and sensibility, both needed to succed in this field. Integrity...I don't know for sure that it applies to all of them. They might not express their own ideas because of not losing I don't know what contract or be pushed to express opposite ideas to get a contract. They might attach to an idea to get a role. They might use that idea because it is popular in a certain time to get more exposure when their movie launches. And not all ideas that are popular are good idea. And some "good" ideas might cause a lot of problems for a lot of people. Some ideas can sound great but place into practice are not anymore. Some good ideas for you can be a very bad one for me. And viceversa. Some ideas sounded great when in youth and terible after I got older.
So no, they are not the ones that should broadcast their ideas, specially about polarizing, sensible issues. This broadcasting is propaganda, even if you think is good or bad, because of the masses it reaches. People attach to their idols and very easily to their ideas. People are passionate about their idols and do not like to judge them, they are to invested in them to question or critique their ideas. And some of them can be easily manipulated by their parents, managers or agents into believing some ideas because some did not have a normal life to know what is good or bad.
Actors should be smarter and not try to manipulate people's love for them by pushing down "their" ideas in their throat. They should know about the power they have over people. Because they are smart and sensible, right?
Even if the ideas are great, the best even, they should have the patience for the democratic process to make it happen. Democracy was never meant to be easy or fast.

I know that not all artists are smart ... but I think, more than average, at least.
And of course, when artists are so much in the clutches of their bureau and their advertisers, nothing interesting, new, or good will come of them singing their scripted "opinions" under The Sword of Damocles, but in some countries where paid propaganda has a huge influrnce on who wins the election, artists who has on screen presence and glamour and maybe are a bit sentimental about things like "people who cannot buy their own politicians" and "climate catastrophes" are an important counterweight to all the force of money that otherwise buy not only their own politicians and, it seems, judges, but also all the advertising spots in all kinds of media.
I guess that was what I meant more than anything.

Korean idols and artists have very, very strict PR restrictions because agencies are marketing "perfect" models for advertisers, producers and networks. Perfect in the sense of being pretty, well mannered, humble, non-controversial and available (the fantasy element). It does not stop SK cancel-culture trolls from causing dumb issues (such as SSK being "too pretty" in her latest drama.)

The Jim Caviezal-Robert De Niro story was a fake story--a satire piece that was identified as such but went viral (another problem with the internet age). Even if it were true, I think Robert De Niro wouldn't care--he is willing to stand up for his political opinions and have people think what they think about him. (And in this case, Jim Caviezal v. Robert De Niro--it's clear in the US who is considered the better actor.)
I don't mind celebrities speaking up for causes that they believe in even if I don't agree with them. It's their right as citizens. Just as it has always been the case of using celebrity power to endorse products for commerce or what are deemed "good" causes, stars can use the same limelight to voice their opinions for politics, which people often dismiss as a headache or "just politics" but actually can be about fundamental important issues. It's up to the people to decide what weight to give those opinions. In the US, fandom is different--the closest fandom to K-pop fans may be the Swifties. We saw recently how the right was vilifying Taylor for dating a football star and accusing it all being part of some ridiculous plot (and if the plot were true, Taylor is more powerful than I thought and you go girl). But Taylor is willing to live her life and also sometimes weigh in like telling people to register to vote (which was very successful) or supporting a candidate. If that costs her some fans, so be it (but she seems to be fine).

I saw had posted about beauty pageants for South Korean men and ended up spending some time giffing about it, pretty ambivalent, since there was definitely some aspects that were just the ones that make it super problematic for girls and women, (while always, for men, it is not everything, their whole life, that demands beauty, so less triggering, I'd say. But still). And then, one the other hand just thinking - wauw .. that's a lot of beautiful men there.
https://www.dramabeans.com/members/CecilieDK/activity/1539690/
And in the aftermath, I got to thinking of the enormous amount of naked women and fully dressed men in art. Yes, I know, David and stuff, but in general: So many naked women. And so I quoted my favourite Art History Scholar in a gif, too.
https://www.dramabeans.com/members/CecilieDK/activity/1540039/
Because of the limited time in a gif, I didn't write the whole "A great hobby for ALL women at ALL times", but originally, she says that, because that motive have been painted by a lot of painters (and sculpted by sculpturers) through some hundreds of years.
Luckily, while I continued to watch stories about beauty pageants, the rest were in British, so I could hear the scandal with the "fat" Miss South Korea 2018, who was not even close to being a bit chubby. The weight expected for a "slim" girl was something I'd send my daughters to hospital for, if they weighed that little.
I know some very thin people who are just born that way and a struggling to achieve a normal weight, but apart from that I once in a while see a K-star that makes me genuinely worry. And there are probably more than I think, ... even the interviewer unthinkingly equalled "thin" and "beautiful" as if they were the same thing.
I like find slim bodies beautiful, too, but I think my ideal maybe goes from the "fattest" k-star and maybe 10 kg up. 🤷🏻‍♀️
(I don't fit the ideal myself. But there are other joys in life than fitting your ideal weight; like for example, the joy of not thinking about that all the freaking time).

The thin-ness is can be pretty extreme in the tv industries of most countries but I’ve actually stopped watching some cdramas because the leads (both male and female) are so thin it’s scary.

I’m watching Knight Flower and for the first time a female character (Lee Hanee) dressing in a male costume looks believable, and for the first time I enjoy seeing a FL doing good deeds at night like some masked hero, because she looks strong enough for such things. I haven’t watched many cross-dressing shows, but for the ones I’ve watched like Our Blooming Youth or Love in the Moonlight (I dropped this one halfway), the cross-dressed FLs never looked like a man to me.

Let's be fair and point out that Lee Hanee's female character was never meant to be romantically involved or even kiss in that male costume. She had to do it one episode, walk around and getting a lit bit drunk. The others have to do a lot more. I don't think the the audience, korean audience in particular, is ready for a kiss between JJS and a female with moustache. I don't think I am too, sorry.

I wasn't particularly talking about romance, but the whole idea of a female character dressing (including the male hanbok and the black costume) and fighting like a male one. By JJS, did you mean Jo Jungsuk? He's in the show with Shin Sekyung, which I'm not watching. The one with Lee Hanee is Lee Jongwon.

5

Yes, Jo Jungsuk. I loved the Knight Flower amd she did a great job playing that character. It is not a critique for the show or the actress but more of a defense of others. It was just an observation that they had the liberty of having her in a moustache because the character was not supposed to be involved romantically in that costume. And the fact that she had her face covered when fighting most of the time helped her look more masculine.
It is a great perfect drama that I loved watching every minute of.

2

Yes, it's fair what you said. When I said the above, I thought more about Lee Hanee's build following the original comment about what is considered beautiful for women in Korean standards. Lee Hanee is not only tall but she's also not slim. Her mannerism helps too, which I'm not sure should be attributed to her talent or her natural traits, or probably both.

5

@claire2009 Is this what you call "not slim"? https://www.instagram.com/p/CvYK1BPOEQK/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

This is what I mean when I say my body ideal starts several kg above the percieved "slim" standard of SK and goes from there and 10 kg up.
She is very slim, she just don't make me worry, thinking she should really be in hospital. And she could well put on more weight and still be slim.

1

@ceciliedk maybe “not as slim as many other actresses” is better wording. What I meant is she looks healthy.

5

Although JJS can morph and looks great as a women, as he is about to play in the musical HEDWIG.

The Tale of Nokdu with Jang Dong-yoon and Kim So-hyun.

I wasn't really convinced by the story but their couple and romance were great.

6

And not as a lead, but still an important character convincing as a fragile young beautiful girl, the crown prince in the recently finished The Matchmakers.

2

JJS looks very pretty here 😅

5

Also, but not so impressive, the "Strong Girl ______-soon" dramas have both featured
ML or SML disguised as a woman for a scene or two.

1

This is JJS's fifth time playing "Hedwig." I wonder what draws him to the character.

3

@ceciliedk
Thanks, good answer. I understand that not as a lead but, by not mentioning it, I assume you gave it as an example of being involved in a romanic relationship?

P.S. My guess is that you did. And forgive me by bringing up again, but my point about that subject (and the one we discussed earlier) has been made no matter how much some try to spin it. The subliminal message dressed in a beautiful package delivered by a charismatic superstar has made some believe that it is ok for that type of relationship between those kind of individuals. And is wrong in which way possible one could think and yet so easily accepted because you gave it as an example without even realizing it.

0

@kiara
The songs? 🤣
Do you know what is about?

1

No, not as an example of a romantic relationship. Just as an example of a main, though not lead, -character crossdressing convincingly.

2

Yes, but to do it over and over? I dunno.

1

In Love in The Moonlight, she needed to look more like a boy than a man. Nobody had to doubt her because her character was an eunuch and she have been sent to the "surgeon" to become one.

Honey Lee had the stature but her character was always in black with a mask and got out during the night.

n terms of the history of art, I saw an interesting review of what sounds like an interesting exhibit of Rubens, the artist known for his painting of voluptuous women, that argued his representations of women were more complex than is usually portrayed, giving them power and agency even while displaying their decidedly non-kdrama fleshiness.

As for male beauty contests, in the U.S. of course the equivalent are "body-building" contests, where men, with the help of anabolic steroids display every individual muscle grotesquely bulging and sharply defined. There are plenty of body builders in Korea ,of course (some on exhibit in Physical 100, that Netflix show), but I gather male beauty contests are more Asian than U.S. and European. Different standards of what constitute male beauty!

As far as kdrama women, I'm an older father of a daughter, but I think even if I was a young man I would worry deeply about health of the majority of women I see on my screen. When they are wearing shorter skirts or occasionally a tank top, their legs and arms look shockingly thin. I wouldn't mind an occasional "Rubenesque" female lead myself--she'd be just as beautiful, and I wouldn't have to be distracted worrying about her health!

Body-building contests are not the equivalent of beauty pageants. Body builders have their own world - they are not judged by a broad public for their sexiness, even if they do appear in underwear.
Bodybuilders are not catering to the female gaze. There might be a girl or two who likes that look, but most woman think it looks ... idk ... monstrous. Bodybuilder competitions are strange, but kind of interesting in their nerdy, competent strive to build more of this or that specific muscle and achieve a clear view to as many muscles as possible, moulded on an exaggeration of an anatomy book rather than an idea of attraction. Building a little muscle can be done to be attractive - like those very handsome men in K-dramas, who really do cater to the female gaze (though of course, us womenfolk have differing tastes IRL, but ...) most women would agree that the moderately muscled K-drama men are far more attractive than e.g. a young Schwarzenegger. Like in Schw.'s looks were never attractive, he was just really good at that strange sport, and sometimes he is funny, which is by far the most attractive thing about him. Another thing is the
attraction of someone being really skilled at something, and that is the attractive part of that sport - not the resulting alien looks.
So, what I am saying is, the nerdiness involved in bodybuilding has it's own world that does not centre around the sexual attraction of a female audience. And as such, it is potentially less humiliating.

6
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, that could be. But If they aren't doing to attract the female (or male) gaze, why are they doing it? I know Schwarzenegger and a few others went onto film and t.v. stardom. But for others the posing on the stage is the thrill.

As someone who lifts weights regularly and who knows non-posing body builders, I would say posing is not a sport, but a choreographed exhibition, though I'm sure strength and power gives the participants a feeling of invulnerability, and maybe provides a shield against humiliation, as you say.

Still, I would say the posing body builders, preening on stage, share a narcissistic self-obsession similar to participants in Korean male beauty contests.

Women's beauty contests seem much more driven by the male gaze, perhaps because they are more ubiquitous and have had an important historical role in popular culture. Of course, I'm sure there is a gay element to male beauty contests, so there might be a similarity there.

Required fields are marked *

Why you would bodybuild if not to attract women? or the female gaze?
Same reason people build plane models, breed orchids or dogs, braid their hair, or play golf. With an element of wanting your own body to look like that, and at the top, the possibility of making it a livelihood. and a community where you can nerd it out with other men.
I heard one guy ask a man for advice and then admiringly comment on the inhibition of that man's arms because his chest muscles were so big. So he couldn't put the underarms from the elbow to the wrist together in front of himself, which would otherwise have been what was expected with that gym machine they were at.
I don't know that posing in itself is a sport, but building your body in a way that demands strict disciplin and many hours at the gym, wouldn't that be a sport? And if Ballroom Dance is a sport, then you could probably call the coregraphed exhibition of meticulously built musclery a sport, too?
A lot of superheroes had begun to be drawn with that kind of absurd muscle in the eighties, I think (but even more, because "super"). Some call that a parallel to the way female superheroes are drawn - to the gaze of the opposite sex. But the male superheroes have always been for the male gaze on male - not necessarily homosexual, unless you will argue that a larger than average percent of superhero comic readers are homosexual men.
I don't know that the men in beauty contests have a narcissistic self obsession. And there are probably som gays, but I don't think it's a 1:1. Not all female beauty contest winners are homosexual, either.
I know a girl ... woman now ... who won a beauty contest when she was 15 and went on to be a model for several years. She was not narcissistic at all. For her, modelling was a horrible job but also a job where you could make in ten hours of tedious waiting, needled clothes (because the models are too thin and long to fit any normal size) and strange photographer choices (I remember her showing how she was supposed to "smile" with her mouth wide open for a German magazine. It looked at one time insane and strangely familiar - I had def. seen that kind of photos). Oh, and she was not a homosexual.

3

I forgot to finish a sentence.
... make in ten hours (...) what others made in a week or if at her age, in a month of hard work.

1

Thanks @ceciliedk very thoughtful. But your point about your acquaintance who was a beauty queen and a model confirms my feeling that there is something very different from male beauty contests in Korea and female beauty contests in Korea and around the world. If I could put it simplistically: men participate in beauty contests as a privilege and opportunity brought by their beauty; women join beauty contests in hope that their beauty will bring opportunity.

There are a number of automated systems that check the comments on this site before they are posted.

One of them tells you that you've used an "inappropriate word" (see @sicarius 's fan wall for a link to the google doc with the ones known). These comments will NEVER BE POSTED until you find the "offending" word and fix it.

The other one gives you ZERO feedback, seems to swallow your comment, but what's really happening is that puts your comment into a queue for human moderation.

If you're just a schmo posting normal things, these comments WILL be posted once one of the @db-staff checks that queue and releases it.

Neither of these systems are to be taken personally and have only to do with you typing strings of characters that are often used by more malicious people.

In fact, these systems are keeping us from having to see TONS OF STUFF that @db-staff has to look at, but these systems are keeping us from seeing.

I know it's frustrating, but it's better this way...just like not being able to edit your comments is a good thing. Truly.

Of course I get that rewriting slurs so you can keep insulting people - but we all know that some of the forbidden words here are not something that in itself should hurt anybody, so complying with the spirit of the word sorting machines does not come as natural.

So thanks to @kiara I know for sure yall missed me, which is aww))) To explain my absence - well, it was a few absolutely hellish weeks consisting of (but not limited to) a hospital time, a funeral and a lot of other unpleasant things I'm currently in no mood to discuss and probably won't be anytime soon so let's leave it at that. Tragic melo was never my strong genre, thus let's go back to something nicer - aka men dramas, music and whatnot.

I know I owe you like 3 weeks worthy of music, but I truly didn't have time nor energy to prepare anything substantial, sorry. Hopefully mini version will do - coincidentally LYN is currently online streaming, bless his night owl soul, and providing me with some fun stuff to share right while I'm typing. Isn't that awesome?

First is WHITE CAT LEGEND opening theme (it's finally here! I waited for so long!), which I really, really like - the tempo, the fusion instrumental, the overall vibe, the meowing in the intro lmao! Btw we'll get back to the latter since the artist apparently likes it as much as I do))) Lyrics with subs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJcT7hS73ks

And freshly hot live from stream - he unironically went full march cat very fitting outfit btw - the messy hair, the collarbones, mmm with it, I'm sooo in love^^
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpuMFvhY1mg

Plus him singing one of non-his AJTL OSTs - this is from last week or so (no, he didn't cut his hair - it's a wig he pocketed took as a souvenir from his latest modern drama's set, once again proving his face card value because even among prettiest people very few can pull this atrocious hairstyle off - yet he does, wow!). I do think he's way too young and cheerful for this track - OG singer's aged voice added to the vibe - but there's no harm in trying:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_tX_EQ5WXc

And the last for tonight - srry! - something I dug out from weibo and really hope the link will work as intended *prays hard* - AJTL sand art. It's fantastic, I'm always fascinated with this kind of things and the artist is extremely talented:

There was A LOT of noise regarding him lately. Let's count:
- he high-key confirmed he's gonna be on THE TRUTH S2 (yay! I want it like rn!);
- teased about that lame reincarnation drama I had a godawful old time reading the novel of he's been rumored for ages to be in - confirmed he's gonna sing OST, but lead role? no comments from His Troll Majesty! Seems like it's 99% set now tho;
- has been rumored to film another costume show with FL from NEW LIFE BEGINS (what in the blind casting hell... girl looks like she could pass for his, no, scratch that, MY teenage niece/daughter!) and apparently the novel for that one is an absolute dumpster fire that even cnetz are bewildered to see getting adapted - it's about female warrior (ha!) turned courtesan (ha!x2) who sleeps her way into ML's princely harem to get revenge (ofc!) but falls for him instead (OK, that part I sorta get considering his potential casting... ahem). I didn't quite understand whether his role is a bad guy or not, but there are many things I'm "huh?" about here, so hopefully he thinks twice first;
- like you've said, rumors about TPOB and EB getting aired VERY SOON - I don't care at this point, just give me ANYTHING! His latest modern drama is apparently already on reviewing stage too;
- low-key confirmed (remember, man is NOT to be trusted when it comes to spoilers!) he's gonna break our hearts once again on TLOJ... Dude, if you're also unhappy to constantly die in your dramas, stop accepting such scripts maybe? Just sayin';
- plus tons of swoony leaks from TLOJ set I'll talk more about tomorrow.

Ofc I am lol. In all seriousness, idk why it hasn't been properly updated yet - they add cast according to rumors just fine. It's this drama: https://mydramalist.com/690711-the-days-of-seclusion-and-love
There are links in comments regarding plot and FL actress fans not liking the idea of her taking the role (they feel like it's too controversial and might get her bashed). At least they don't seem to have any issues with him personally... There's no decent translation of the novel, I believe - only messy MTL out of order that I couldn't gain any valuable info from.

Nope, but someone on twt started translating some tiiiny snippets from it and lol, now I see why he was casted - his character's two main traits are ruthless assholery AND irresistible hot voice FL can't help but swoon over against her better judgement, bwahahaha))) It's not an actual novel though - more like a few (10 or so) chapters draft that was never properly finished feat notes about ending. I believe the author is a part of scriptwriters team so hopefully they'll flesh out whatever plans they've had for the story nicely.

Catch is that the rumored drama above and DREAM WITHIN A DREAM are reportedly start filming at the same time - late Spring/early Summer and no way he's gonna be ML in both simultaneously so take of that what you will *scratches head*

Authorities really need to show some flexibility and allow already made dramas to get aired at least - it won't do any real harm and certainly won't save the careers of blacklisted artists either. Ruining the hard work of hundreds and thousands over one person's misconduct doesn't seem very pro-community logic-wise... Oh right, this was never about logic - or community's interest - anyway.

Those endless OSTs must've pay nicely because from what I understood he's not earning much from his stage appearances, unless it's those trendy variety shows. Drama gigs are paid during filming, so at least actors aren't starving while waiting for a release date that may never come. Still nothing good for people's portfolios - how to prove to producers you're a good fit for a next role if your best works to date are still in dungeon where no one saw them?

Hope my efforts will match your expectations. Ah, wish I had some minimal video editing skills to just cut and reupload the parts I wanted to include there, that'd make everything so much easier! Like you and DB spam filter will probably forgive me an occasional YT link with a time stamp, but hardly a 4 hours untranslated weibo one, right?)))

5

I am sure DB will forgive you. It is difficult to go through a 4 hour untranslated video even for LYN.

WHITE CAT LEGEND is this non-ambitious moderate budget silly drama to rest your mind with - it appears even more slice-of-life than I think is necessary both webtoon/anime it was based on, for better or worse - so I'm enjoying it but can also totally get if someone else does not. OST is really nice though - aside of LYN's fiery opening, cute ending theme is performed by all main cast together and one of guys (the eternally melancholic scribe) also did a sad ballad which wasn't bad either. I easily forget dramas I wasn't very impressed with, but good OSTs stay with me for a long time. One of the webtoons I enjoyed,Bitten Contract, has ended (it will have some side stories but the official story is over) and now I don't know what will take its place on my reading list haha.

But the reason I mention it is because when I was reading it, I often wondered if it were made into a live action show, who could play the roles. I always drew a blank for the main characters but for one of the antagonists, someone always vaguely came to mind, like I thought they looked like the webtoon character, but I didn't know their name. I think I just got the name of the actor: Kim Young Kwang.

And I just saw him in a video about rude celebrities and he seems to actually be similar to the webtoon character's personality.

If anyone has read Bitten Contract, can you tell me your thoughts. Do you think he looks like the character Yun Kang?

This is something that has been getting to me during Love Song for Illusion. People keep asking if they should watch it. They'll literally write things like "the plot sounded interesting but the comments are so bad so now I don't know" and the thing that's increasingly annoying me about that is people not watching it and forming their own opinion. The way they make it seem like it's scary or a boogeyman is gonna pop up if they watch a bad project.

And one thing about LSFI is that for all its flaws, there ARE people who like and/or enjoy it. Whether it's because of the messiness of the plot or for the specfic actor(s), whatever the case may be, they like watching it.

And no one is saying people should or have to watch an entire series but if you're interested or curious, why not watch the first episode to see how you feel? If you want to watch more, watch more. If you don't want to watch more, stop.
There is literally no harm of watching a show. There's no stakes involved.

Sidenote: there's been times when I've asked someone specifically what happened in shows and they refused to tell me because they didn't want to give me spoilers and told me to watch for myself. That's not the type of situation I'm referring to when I mean people can watch things for themselves.

I know that I get easily put off by bad comments even though I shouldn’t, so I often tend to stay out of commenting if I’m really enjoying a show (particularly if it’s one other people don’t like) just in case 😅 then I can talk about it afterwards but I’ve missed the conversation 😕

@britney You know I used to have bad comments turn me off all the time (not k-dramas but before that) and then I realised that for every bad comment, there is someone who watched, liked it, and didn't comment. So now I make it a point to comment on things I like.
For me, it's so visual and before I decide to spend time watching something, I do like to find a bit more about it (I almost missed two of my most fav dramas becasue I was so turned off by their release posters). One of them had awful comments in the comment section.
But after a few months, I realised it's a drama by one of my fav actors (by that time it also had become very popular) and gave it a watch. Lo and behold, it became one of my fav ones. But if you visit the drama page even today you will see how it wasn't received well as a live watch. So I think it's all about individual taste.

Recently Usher performed the Super Bowl halftime show and because of that, a youtube channel made a countdown about his songs. They mentioned he lost some of his fanbase after he got married and it once again made me think about korean entertainers haha.

Like I totally get celebrities having personal lives and relationships. They should be allowed to have them just like any other person. What sucks then is how folks feel a need to know everything about them.

Like why do you need to know about their kids and spouse? Why does their personal lives have to be shared with the masses?

And then dumb (to me) questions are asked such as "how are they as a husband/wife/mother/father" as if anyone would give an unflattering answer. Any answer would just likely be a relatable response.

This is just one of my many annoyances haha.

It wasn’t long ago idol and actor dating was called a scandal, right? Because a married celeb lost money for the entertainment company I guess. Looks like it hasn’t changed tho, with your comment about Usher losing fans because he’s married.

Usher got married years ago. I don't know if they're still married. I'm just saying how it being mentioned reminded me of Korean entertainment and how that is a thing.

It may be an even bigger thing in korean entertainment.

I know in the kpop industry that folks getting married like instantly halves their fanbase.

I'm not sure about actors but it seems once they get married or have kids then conversations turn to them a "family man" or mothers. They're always questioned about it. It's referrenced when they do project (this is 1st project since getting married, the 1st project since the birth of a child, etc).

I think a few months ago, I saw some comment about Song Joong Ki not answering a question about the name of his son. Some folks said the way he replied was rude, some said he was setting boundaries, and some said they were tired of him talking about his baby.
The thing is interviewers kept asking about the baby and/or his family. They post articles and ask about where he's living or how's his family life.

Usher may have indeed lost some fans when he got married but the expectations for singers are definitely different in the US. Usher has now been married 3 times (and had some public messiness) and yet he was not cancelled or relegated to obscuredom as evidenced by his Super Bowl show—which is arguably the highest sought after gigs in the US that only the top stars get to do.

Co-incidentally, my husband and I were speaking about this yesterday. A young popular Indian actress recently got married, and she is relatively new in the industry. My husband remarked that unlike earlier days, actresses do not hold back any more and we were trying to figure out who broke the mould for the actresses. Indian film industry used to be like this for both men and women. Most actors either hid their marriage, or got married after they had established themselves and were beyond the 'scandal' part of it (one of the bigest super stars hid his marriage for five long years after his debut in 1988). Women left the industry for good, other than occassional appearances, they were seldom seen.
Surprisingly, the mould for the male actors was actually broken by the mega star Shahrukh Khan, who wore his heart on his sleeves for his lovely wife Gauri before he became a star (people knew he was married before his debut), let alone the celestal star he is today. Interestingly, it's the same time frame where the other superstar hid his marriage to his teen sweetheart (ealry ninelties), even though his first movie was a mega hit and he belonged to one of the most influential film families (Shahrukh on the other hand was a nobody from Delhi). For women, I think it was broken in late 2000s when Kareena Kapoor got married and then gave some of the biggest hits of her career.
Hollywood on the other hand never cared much about marriages of their celebrities (Elizabeth Taylor case in point) and so it's surprising that people said Usher lost support due to marriage, becasue I don't think so. He was married during his early ays of stardom I do think though that it's the scandal that broke out that might have caused the setback - he was accused of a tons of stuff by a few different women a few years back. From what I know he has been married three times (he got married this month to his third wife who he already has two children with).

Happy OT Friday, beanies. It is especially happy for me as I made my deadlines yesterday, and then fell into a K-drama catch-up coma . Here’s what I watched in the last 24 hours: I Am Solo season 19, Radio Star ep 855, My Little Old Boy ep 382, Between Him and Her 8, 9, King of Mask ep 439, Dr. Slump ep 8, Queen of Divorce ep 8. Now I am making bibbimbap for dinner and plan on settling in for more catching up. Ahhh, nothing like a personal drama reward weekend after a stressful crunch couple of weeks!

CLIFFNOTES FROM THE END OF 9TAILEDVIXEN'S 2ND LUNAR NEW YEAR WEEK:

1. Lunar New Year "Recycling" is the time-honoured practice of adding a packet of groundnuts and some mandarin oranges to each gift bag/bundle... only to receive a gift bag bundle from your host which also includes a packet of groundnuts and some mandarin oranges.

So you take that packet of groundnuts and those mandarin oranges and put them in the next gift bag/bundle you give out... and then receive a gift bag/bundle with those two things in them.

At some point, the packets of groundnuts and the number of mandarin oranges start to pile up no matter how many times your regift them and you wave the white flag and end up each groundnuts and mandarin oranges all the time as snacks in between having to attend multicourse New Year lunches and dinner.

Ah! The perils of belonging to a foodcentric culture!

2. Aerial Yoga class got cancelled this week because the instructor extended her Lunar New Year leave. First post-New Year class will be next Tuesday.

After the traditional overindulgence of the New Year, it'll be good to get climbing up those silks again.

3. AXS and their 2-step verification to get at my The Rose ticket SUCKS!

How on earth do they think a system that treats any mobile number that isn't a UK or US number as a landline that they cannot send the OTP code to something that is fine to use?

I'm not the first concert-goer from one country attending a concert in another country, so this unexpected inability to access my (rather pricey) ticket is really irritating.

Thank goodness the concert is 5 weeks away so this can get sorted at some point before it but it is ridiculous that I am unable to access my e-ticket because of AXS's idiotic 2-step verification system so I now have to contact the concert venue itself to make alternative arrangements to get my ticket. *Eye roll*

4. This week in South Korean Women's News

a) More South Korean men become stay-at-home dads

More men are reporting themselves as “economically inactive” – those not working nor seeking work – to provide full-time parenting for their children, data showed on Feb 21.

The number of men who cited child care as a reason for being economically inactive in 2023 stood at around 16,000, posting a 37.4 per cent surge from 12,000 the year before, according to data provided by the state-run Statistics Korea. The figure marks an all-time high since related data was first compiled in June 1999. The population of stay-at-home dads has also seen a steady increase, advancing from 6,000 in 2013, to 9,000 in 2019 and reaching 13,000 in 2021.

The nearly three-fold increase seen over a decade is assessed to have stemmed from an expansion of paternity leave policies and an improved perception of males providing child care.

2. South Korea, a nation of rigid gender norms, meets its changemakers

More South Korean women are working than ever, but entrenched gender expectations haven’t gone away. Women still bear the brunt of household chores and child care, even in families where both parents work, government statistics show.

Life as a working mother is often untenable, with a chronic lack of support at work and the largest gender pay gap in the developed world. Women here earn about 69 cents for every dollar their male peers make.

But some Koreans are defying gendered expectations. They’re pursuing motherhood on their own timeline, sharing household duties equally, or living as singles forever in a marriage-centric society.

I wonder is it common for Koreans to tie up their dogs outdoors on short chains to doghouses and largely ignore them? I've seen this in so many dramas and it always bothers me! Cats are sadly most often shown as homeless strays, also outdoors. There are celebrities who share their pets, like Gong Yoo's cats and Park Seo Joon's little dog, so some Koreans love their pets. I've read that companion pets are a relatively new concept in SK.

There have been some well cared for pets in dramas, and of course if there's a character who is a veterinarian then pet care is depicted. But I feel like most have no pets or tied up dogs who often also disappear during the drama without explanation. Some I can think of at the moment are My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Weightlifting Fairy, Reply 1988, and most recently Welcome to Sam Dal Ri. In this last one the dog had a name and was petted but was always seen tied up to the doghouse. And there was a pair of street cats shown as kittens then years later as adult cats, still living as strays. Sam Dal even ridiculously stated that petting the kittens meant the mom cat would abandon them. The absolute worst, in my opinion, was another Shin Hye Sun show, Angel's Last Mission. Her character had a guide dog for the blind, who was kept... yup, tied up outside to a doghouse!!! 😠 And was left there all the time after the FL regained her sight.

I've liked the happy and loved pets in Because This Life is Our First (Woori the cat), Romance is a Bonus Book (Geum-bi the dog), Kill Me Heal Me (dog), 30 but 17 (dog and chick), and even the King's turtle in Alchemy of Souls. Are there others I've missed? Do you think the younger generations of Koreans will have a more caring relationship with their pets? Will we see more of this in dramas? 🐱🐶

Did you watch Dodosolsollalasol? There was a cute white dog living with the main couple.

Other well cares pets I remember:

_ Flower Boy Next Door (a dog).
_ Live up to your name (a little pig. And a dog, but he lived in the garden).
_ Wednesday 3:30 (a dog).
_ While you were sleeping (a dog).

I remember other shows (apart from the ones you mentioned, like 30 but 17), but I don't mention them because I'm not sure if the doggies slept outdoors.

I fell in love with the dog in Chicago Typewriter that mysteriously showed up to lead the FL to the ML's home. I looked up the dog and discovered it's a Sapsali, a breed native to Korea whose history goes back to the Joseon era.

A number of Kdramas have featured my favorite breed, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. In fact, it was the subject of my very first fan wall post.
https://www.dramabeans.com/members/Babylilo/activity/1466861/

I still haven't been able to remember the drama where a chaebol granny shows up at a corporate presentation dressed like Queen Elizabeth II, with two corgis on a leash. If anyone can identify the show, please put me out of my misery!

I love Yoo Ah In and so much want to watch Chicago Typewriter but I cannot get it anywhere here!! I looked up sapsali dogs, how adorable with all that fur! Corgis are also cute dogs. I prefer cats and dogs that are original, natural breeds like these over ones that were developed by people. Sorry I don't recall a drama with a chaebol Queen Elizabeth but I bet that scene was fun!

Chicago Typewriter has jumped around several platforms, but at the moment it doesn't seem to be available, even on the dark web. Hopefully it will pop back up somewhere soon.

There's pretty much no such thing as a "natural" dog breed. Almost every breed you can think of was created by people crossbreeding different types of dogs to get the qualities they wanted, such as the bulldog's protruding jaw or the corgi's short legs. These breeds became standardized far enough in the past that we now think of them as "natural." Unfortunately, some of the more exaggerated traits can lead to serious health issues; for example, breeds with pushed-in faces (bulldogs, pugs, etc.) tend to have breathing problems.

That's exactly what I mean. The bulldogs and Persian cats who can't breathe, shepherds with hip dysplasia, Scottish folds with cartilage concerns, etc. Corgis and sapsalis are ancient breeds; though it is true their conformation likely changed a bit because of human interference they are not unrecognizable from historical accounts and images.

Some of Yoo Ah In's projects have disappeared from channels. I hope he can return to acting and we can see his unreleased shows along with his older works again. It seems to me he needs treatment not prosecution. But then I'm not Korean so my perspective is different.

I didnt make it to open thread yesterday because we had a work party, it ws pretty nice, fancy hotel lounge, buffet, but food ran out too fast. At least I got my goats cheese. speeches, the usual.
Today is 106th anniversary of Estonia, whoopee! I am not sure if I can make it to the parade. I can watch it online though https://etv.err.ee/1609247807/ev106-kaitsevae-paraad-vabaduse-valjakul
In 1920 tiny Estonia won over Soviet Russia in War of Independence, almost conquering St.Petersburg, sinking 8 war ships, fighting with 4 enemies on 3 fronts & facing starvation. we were helped by British navy, who made an independent decision against the parliaments opinion and came to the Baltic sea, got approval only later bc it couldnt be helped. And the USA who sent us grain, or our army would have starved because Soviet Russia was blocking trade routes. Danish, Finnish, Swedish, Latvian, Polish, Chech, Mongol volunteers were fighting on our side. Finns were especially fierce bc who wouldnt protect their little brother with all their might? and the danes left us so much folklore and songs, most military songs we sing now came here through those volunteers. Polish captain stole us back several ships from the Russians like the icebreaker Suur Tõll, without that, we wouldnt have gotten british ships here. 1919-1920 had ice over 1,7m thick. Suur Tõll was a monster, it tilted the bow and crushed the ice by swiftly pumping out water from the aft. then fell with all its 5600 tons.
it also endured blows from sea mines. any other ship would have sank, Suur Tõll barely noticed 1/3

the first Estonian-Scottish football match also happened during War of independence between scottish volunteers and estonian students, and since then they were held every year until soviet occupation, and started again in 1990. one of our longest relationships. we are all for free Scotland
our local communities? Great Britain sent us weapons except they were parts that had to be put together. who could do it fastest? our local jewish community did that. just one workshop put together 800 guns in one night! most of our jews were later captured in 1940, deported and executed by russians. 700 died in german camps. and 1600 got away together with refugee boats. but till then, they had cultural autonomy to which the state didnt interfere.
we had our spies: the roma. man, I dont know how they did that. they sabotaged a lot of enemy units. they were invisible.
if not for all those different people and countries, we would not have become free. They did not hesitate. Some of them bypassed their governments decisions and just did what was right to them.
2 years of war in Ukraine and the world is still so slow. Had they given all the necessary help right at the beginning, Ukraine would now be free. they have fought longer than us. I am so pissed at the ignorance and psesumptions, all those people who dont know what the fuck they are saying and their lame excuses.
freedom is only possible, if people put their egos aside... and their greed. I am mad today because Korean company Hyundai signed an economic treaty with Russia and is selling them parts to military cars through Taiwan, all the while Russia being ally to North Korea. Human greed is ridiculous. Kpop fans are just encapsulated in their world with their eyes shut to everything. I am very disappointed in that country.
But everyone will be free. It is very convenient to ignore wrongdoings but at some point it catches up to the person, and everybody must answer for their actions. Then the ego will beg and argue...but it has to face a punishment nevertheless.

we had a hanbok event at the library. I made some connections with local korean community. later I learned the young koreans parent who came from Soviet Union in the 1980ies, strongly support Putin. But they live in Estonia. I am hoping that I can do something about it and at least show the younger generationwhy they should reconsider. They dont have that historical memory, they dont have that heritage or experience because they arrived later and were relatively free to do what they wanted.
ignorance and greed. I think they are real culprits.

Just finished watching Mine. It prompted me to offer some potentially helpful notes for Kdrama writers:

In this day and age, it’s not realistic to depict chaebols strong-arming the media into suppressing negative publicity. We now have the internet, where anybody can post a story or video and immediately have it go viral.

These days, there’s a quick, affordable way to find out whether or not a child is the chaebol’s genuine offspring. It’s called a DNA test.

For pregnant women, hearing upsetting news does not inevitably bring about a miscarriage.

"We now have the internet, where anybody can post a story or video and immediately have it go viral."
Sure, but if it's not picked up by mainstream media it's not considered credible. Then you have the "fact check" articles from the mainstream media "debunking" it and it fizzles out eventually. They have a way, always.

Discerning consumers of news may be skeptical of information spread via the internet, but unfortunately, most people don't bother to fact check--especially if the false information feeds into their existing biases. A post doesn't necessarily need to true in order for it to be widely accepted as fact. Many a reputation has been ruined by lies spread via social media and other outlets.

You made exactly my point. Even if we have the internet, if THEY don't want a true story to be credible, that story will rot away in internet clotter if THEY don't allow it to be picked up by THEIR mainstream media. Because everyone is used to only reading the titles and believes that the media is telling them the truth, then it is very easy to bury a true story. The problem is that the media is not doing what is supposed to do for a very long time and they can get away with it even we think that we have the internet and can have access to information.

I don't have precise statistics, but roughly half the people in the U.S. get their news from social media.

The point I was trying to make with my initial statement was that while the evil chaebol may have been able to block the mainstream media from exposing his misdeeds, he would not have been able to prevent his wife and other individuals from airing his dirty laundry on social media. There would be enough people reading and believing the posts to ruin his reputation, or at least tarnish it a bit.

2

I think that the social media companies can control the visibility of the messages. Social media sites can legally keep your posts from being seen by other users, even if the post does not violate any terms and conditions.
They also have the right to remove or restrict content at their discretion.
If people can see it, they cannot read it.

Supreme Court will decide soon about a case in this matter.

And more about those cases and what is about it:
