City Hunter: Episode 16

Ooh, the big secret’s out — to us, at least, not to the characters — and the story takes a bit of a twist accordingly. It’s a point I thought I’d hate, but which actually turns out to work pretty nicely, in a symbolic and thematic sense. I think. I’m still waiting on full confirmation before I decide that I like it.

EPISODE 16 RECAP

Young-ju’s use of Yoon-sung’s Thai name stops the latter in his tracks. He doesn’t expressly deny Young-ju’s assertion, just evades it by telling him to bring proof if he’s so sure he’s the City Hunter. Young-ju vows to catch him in the act.

Yoon-sung maintains his composure until he’s out of sight, then collapses, weakened from the toxic exposure. He awakens in bed with Shik-joong tending to him, and with the memory of recent dangerous events impressed firmly in his mind, he hands over his bank books and house deed to Ajusshi.

He speaks as though his death is a foregone conclusion, advising Shik-joong to use the money to return to his hometown and asking him to check in on Nana and his mother periodically. His matter-of-fact words unnerve Shik-joong, but Yoon-sung tells him, “I’d forgotten who I was for a moment.”

It occurs to Nana later that night that something may have happened to Yoon-sung, so it’s with relief that she takes in his arrival at her apartment. He looks at her with a grim expression, and asks if she could ever throw away the kitchen table and chairs left her by her parents. Not understanding the meaning behind it, Nana wonders why she’d do that, since she’d rather treasure it forever. That both proves his point and upsets him.

He asks, “How long are you going to dwell on the memories of people who are no longer with you?” Oh, so sad — the thought of Nana never getting over him pains him, and makes him lash out at her. Noooo, don’t be cruel to be kind! That is just about the stupidest way to be “kind” that man ever devised.

He tells her in his firm, sad way that he’s never once imagined falling in love, but that he can’t bear the thought of her hurting because of him: “I don’t even want to leave you with any memories of me. Kim Nana — I like you. But I don’t think I could let you go.” (Then don’t doooo it!) “So you let go of me first.”

With that, he grabs his bullet necklace from her neck: “You know who I am, and how I lived.”

She hurriedly tells him to forget what she said if her words are too burdensome for him. But he says he can’t do that, because he likes her: “This is my first and last request.”

She refuses to accept that request, but he asks her with a heartfelt “Please.” He adds that if he ever goes looking for her, he wants her to reject him. If they’re to meet in the street, she should pretend not to know him. Yeah, this is an insane request, but how can she resist when he says so sincerely, “I’m sorry…that you had to know me”?

Yoon-sung: “I’ve realized with a certainty why Father warned me not to love.”

Aw, man. I can’t even hate him for doing this, because he’s being so candid and open about it — it’s not so much noble idiocy as just good-old-fashioned noble. Yes, he could just choose to embrace happiness — but he seems so sure of his death that I suppose he’s trying to do the responsible thing.

Nana cries for a bit, then pulls herself together and tells herself she won’t cry. And since Yoon-sung asked her to forget him because their feelings are causing him such turmoil, she decides to abide by his wishes, “Because instead of him hurting, it’s better that I hurt.”

Young-ju studies his City Hunter chart, which is alarmingly accurate. Nana’s aunt comes by to give him words of encouragement, telling him that she’s made the decision to wipe the slate clean. She’s still upset that her brother and sister-in-law were victims of his father’s accident — interesting, so she knew the truth, but kept that from Nana — but she’s not going to hold that against Young-ju. Given that Nana’s aunt has been quite friendly and warm all this time, this is a tacit admission that she’s harbored resentment, which she now has let go of. She adds that Nana probably feels just like her, suggesting that she doesn’t really hate him but is keeping her distance out of hurt.

Assistant Pil-jae delivers the startling news that the confidential file on the 1983 incident has disappeared, right from under the NIS’s nose.

Setback No. 2: They receive a report from the Thai police confirming the identity of the drug lord from the Triangle, and it’s not Jin-pyo. Young-ju had had confirmation from those arrested drug runners that Jin-pyo is the guy, but they’re no longer around for questioning, because they’ve been sent back home to face trial in Thailand.

Unsurprisingly, Jin-pyo has a hand in this, and exerts his pull with the Thai police to stall Young-ju. Minion Sang-gook points out that the mere fact that Young-ju is on the Thai drug trail means he’s sniffing close to the truth. He urges Jin-pyo to make the confidential file public, now that they know who all five targets are and have the proof. He reminds Jin-pyo that he joined up with him partly for revenge, but mostly to restore his brother’s good name.

Jin-pyo says it’s not time yet to play the hidden card — because Yoon-sung has to finish this off.

At the Blue House, Nana’s decision holds firm when she runs into Yoon-sung in the hallway. Per his request, she ignores him and walks by.

Jin-pyo (posing as investor Steve Lee) meets with Chun Jae-man, and asks about the TV interview Chun had given about the 1983 incident. Chun asserts that those men were thoughtless traitors out to sell their country, unaware that he’s just dug his grave a little bit deeper.

Jin-pyo asks about the sit-in at the Haewon Chemicals factory, since the protest is causing a stir; they’re demanding that the company acknowledge the hazardous conditions, to declare them victims of an industrial accident. This would, at the very least, allow them certain legal rights and protections, but it’s no wonder that money-grubbing Chun is loath to part with a single penny to pay for their medical bills.

He declares himself a cool-headed businessmen, not one to irrationally give away money, and plans to skirt that responsibility by pushing through a bill privatizing health care. And here we were, calling socialized medicine the devil.

The president, on the other hand, urges Chun to do the right thing and declare the site hazardous, get his factories up to code, and let his employees work in safe conditions. Chun doesn’t want to deal with the endless lawsuits (he’s lazy and greedy!), since that would lead to his ruin. One can hope.

Chun declares that he has not flouted one bit of the law. Famous last words. You mean aside from the toxic dumping, right? He tells President Choi that if he continues to oppose him, he’ll not only hold Operation Clean Sweep over his head, but also the president’s Big Secret, the one that nobody knows but him.

Nana visits Mom in the hospital, who wonders why she’s not with Yoon-sung. Not wanting to upset her, Nana just says that he’s been so busy that they haven’t been able to coordinate schedules, and Mom tells her how thankful she is to have Nana with Yoon-sung. Words to inspire guilt.

She finds the boy Yoon-shik crying outside his mother’s room as doctors rush in to revive her, and Nana puts on a smile to assure him that Mom will be fine. She accompanies him to buy his mother a gift with the coins he’d been saving for months; he wants to give her cosmetics, to brighten her up.

They pick out a blush and present the jar of coins, but the cashier rejects payment, saying that it’s too time-consuming to count out what are essentially a pile of dimes. At first she’s polite about it, but when Nana offers to count it all out for her, her attitude turns snooty, as though their store is above selling dime products. Nana gently corrects her, reminding her that 100 won coins are still money, which gets the cashier muttering under her breath.

Yoon-sung walks by the store window — he’s just completed reconnaissance work of his own, following around Chun Jae-man — and assesses the scene. He steps in and presents a bill to pay for the purchase, and the cashier’s polite facade falls back into place.

However, she doesn’t have the change for such a huge banknote — 10 million won, or about $8,000. I love the point this makes, which Yoon-sung articulates:

Yoon-sung: “You look down your nose at pennies and dimes, when you can’t even make change for this? Before you take offense, start by apologizing. If you can’t even bother to consider what the boy’s buying this for, why sell the product? It seems to me the quality of your service doesn’t amount to a dime’s worth. There’s no such thing as a dime-value person in this world. Discriminating among people is cowardly and pathetic.”

The woman apologizes immediately, but he means to the child. With a little less enthusiasm, she apologizes to him as well.

They make the purchase after all, and Yoon-sung takes the boy back with him, but tells Nana not to visit the hospital anymore.

Chun’s minion Mr. Creepy returns to terrorize Cancer Mom. If we weren’t convinced yet that he was evil, that sentence sure does it, no?

She refuses to betray her colleagues and sign the form giving up her complaint against the company, though she’s shocked when he tells her that all her so-called friends have already signed, and she’s the last holdout. Man, I don’t know if that’s the truth, but if he’s lying to get her to sign, it’s a pretty clever tactic. He adds that her misplaced loyalty will get her dead and make her poor son poorer, when she could ensure his safe future instead.

He guides her hand in sealing the contract with her thumbprint, and she doesn’t have the heart to resist.

But no, it was a lie, and the demonstration continues at the factory. Not for long, though, since Mr. Creepy orders a team of thugs to wipe out the protest, which they do with cruel efficiency. How sad am I that the ensuing riot — more like slaughter, though the aim is maiming rather than outright murder (glass half full!) — is altogether too familiar a scene in Korean history.

Into the fray stalks the City Hunter (yay!), who beats up the offenders with ease. In fact, it’s almost so easy that I’m a little disappointed…until he turns around and sees Mr. Creepy standing there in his head-to-toe black and guyliner, ready to face off. Awwww, yeah!

Creepy’s got a baton/nightstick/pipe, so empty-handed Yoon-sung picks up the first thing he gets his hands on — a water bottle — and beats him furiously with it. Korea must not have switched over to those leaky bottles that collapse under the weight of air. Enjoy that while you can.

This should not be so cool, but it is — and how much do I love that even with bodies strewn on the ground, the injured protestors still look up with moony eyes at His Hotness?

Yoon-sung delivers the final blow directly to the head, which isn’t enough to knock out the guy, but does get him down for the count. Yoon-sung plucks the signed contract from Creepy’s pocket, and tells him to convey the message to Chun Jae-man that he’s gonna have to give in on the whole my-factory-is-a-toxic-wasteland point.

Da-hae goes shopping for her father’s birthday present, and worries about the anti-fan cafe that sprang up after her public fight with the girls who insulted her father. Apparently they’ve declared that they’ll come after her, and Da-hae’s elevated profile makes her fairly easy to locate.

Sure enough, a mob of anti-fans greets the ladies when they pull up at the cafe, who are here for a study session with Yoon-sung, who’s waiting inside. They’re armed with eggs, and start slinging them Da-hae’s way.

Nana leaps in front of Da-hae and takes the brunt of the assault, being pelted with eggs and fruit, until Eun-ah and Yoon-sung both arrive and interrupt the disturbance. Yoon-sung asks worriedly if she’s okay, but Nana maintains their distance and rejects his help, saying curtly that she’ll clean herself up.

How does it feel to get what you asked for, Mr. Noble (Okay, Possibly A Bit Of An Idiot)? All throughout his tutoring session, Yoon-sung can’t keep his gaze from straying over to Nana, who stands a distance away.

At the hospital, Yoon-sung puts on a cheery front for his mother’s sake, but she’s attuned to his moods and knows that something is troubling him. He says he can tell her once it’s all over, and assures her that it’s not that big a deal. Oh, you know, moonlighting as a vengeful vigilante, taking on society’s corrupt, wreaking justice with the cold fury with which others wreak havoc…ho-hum. All in a day’s work.

He evades her concerned questions, then muses to himself, “Mom, liking somebody isn’t always a happy thing, I think.”

Yoon-shik asks Yoon-sung to read to him, which turns out to be a bedtime story about an elephant. That makes him think back to the comment he’d made about Nana resembling his Thai “friend” who liked skinship — turns out he DID mean his elephant, ha.

Surveillance time: Yoon-sung spies on Chun Jae-man meeting with Jin-pyo and a couple other men, then texts the photos to Young-ju. Immediately, Young-ju smells something fishy — why would Chun be meeting with two Seoul district prosecutors?

As the men dine, Yoon-sung sits in the next room, listening through the (literally) paper-thin walls. It’s an old boys’ club in the making, with Chun treating them to the lavish meal and greasing the wheels. The prosecutors are flattered and basically agree to sweep his problems under the rug, and Chun gives them gifts of some premium seaweed as thanks.

Into this scene of budding corruption flies Young-ju, who turns his righteous indignation on his superiors. One of them keeps his head down in chagrin, but the other hotheaded prosecutor takes the offense-as-defense tack and loses his temper, saying that Young-ju’s hardly one to lecture them on propriety, He Who Covered Up His Father’s Corruption.

Now the prosecutors are suspicious, wondering if Chun arranged this meeting to set them up for a fall. Mood soured, they walk out — and Young-ju orders them to leave behind the seaweed gift lest they also leave behind their sense of justice.

Chun blusters that he’s being pretty high-and-mighty over some seaweed, but Young-ju spills the contents of the box on the ground, revealing the wads of cash stuffed inside. He lets Chun know he’s wise to his attempt to kill him: “Faked suicide — that’s no fun.”

Chun feigns ignorance, but Young-ju’s next words have both Chun and Jin-pyo on alert: “1983. Operation Clean Sweep. You said in your interview that they’d all been shot to death in open waters. When I brought up the Nampo incident you’d tried to hide, it must have been very uncomfortable for you.”

Young-ju shares a theory, that perhaps not everyone had died. With a look at Jin-pyo, he asks Chun if it’s possible someone could have survived. He leaves him with a warning: “I’ll be waiting to see if you’re still this confident once I’ve uncovered the full truth of Operation Clean Sweep.” Damn, Young-ju really does get the best exits, all righteous passion.

This incident gets him in hot water with his boss, though, who has heard the account and reprimands Young-ju for hiding his tipoff by the City Hunter. Young-ju is ordered off the Chun Jae-man case, and told that his future will be decided at an upcoming meeting.

It’s the opposite for Nana, who gets promoted at work. With recent events and a recommendation working in her favor, Nana is assigned to presidential guard duty. Ah, let the final face-off begin! City Hunter vs. City Hunter’s One True Love, as she guards his Target No. 5!

…who may just be the City Hunter’s father?

Yoon-sung has lunch with the President and Da-hae, and the three of them all pick out the beans from their rice. (Ahh, I knew those beans would have to mean something! I was hoping against birth secrets, but sigh. I suppose it works, since it points to an epic final conflict.) President Choi asks Yoon-sung if he thinks Da-hae has a shot at going to university, and Yoon-sung truthfully answers that it doesn’t look likely.

That gives Da-hae the opening to admit that she hasn’t the head for studying, and that she’d rather work. She was afraid of disappointing him, but she’d rather come clean now than embarrass him by going to a third-rate school.

President Choi accepts that, and apologizes to Yoon-sung for wasting his time with the tutoring lessons, even as he praises his ballsiness for being frank with his assessment of Da-hae. (From aluminum… back to steel, then?)

The president muses that he was quite like Yoon-sung in his youth, but that living in the political world has curbed that side of him. Oh, this birth secret’s gonna hurt, isn’t it?

In another hallway encounter at work, Nana tries to walk by without a word, but Yoon-sung stops her to give her grief about the scrape on her face, and for not taking care of her appearance. Aw, they’re back to the overcompensating assiness, which is mitigated a very tiny bit by the knowledge that they’re both forcing themselves to act this way. But only a very little bit. Mostly it just makes me sad.

It’s harder to deny his feelings than he’d like, and Yoon-sung broods at home, taking out the photo he totally didn’t throw away, and then going out for a walk.

That takes him to the public park where he’d once run through fountains, where he sees Nana sitting, alone.

To his chagrin, she spots him and approaches, so he warns her to keep her distance: “Coming here to reminisce pathetically on old memories — I’ll do it alone. No need for you to do it too.” He tells her to be her usual plucky self rather than playing the naif, which doesn’t suit her.

Yoon-sung: “Every day I blame myself hundreds, thousands of times. Why did I meet you? Why did it have to be you? To me, you’re someone who makes me hate, blame, and regret myself. You’re like a nightmare I don’t want to remember. I told you to go back to the time before you knew me. Go back and meet a better man, and live every day joyfully. Forget me, and live happily.”

He turns to go, and Nana splashes into the fountain between them, mindless of the water, to catch up to him: “Is that all you can say to me? Telling me to break up, to let go of you, to forget you, to disappear from your life — I could understand that. But how could you say this to me? How could you tell me to meet another man?”

Voice trembling, Nana says she’ll wait till this is over, “So can’t you come back to me? I’ll forget these words you’ve just said. It’s not a difficult thing — can’t you just say you’ll come back? If you don’t answer now, even if you come back to me later, I won’t take you. I really, really won’t. So can’t you tell me that you’ll finish this and come back to me? Please.”

With tears in his own eyes, he turns silently and walks away.

Young-ju hears that the NIS employee who’d been in charge of the lost confidential book has since resigned and is preparing to leave the country. They put a flight ban on him and track him to his home, where he lies in a daze. The man, fading fast, says that the file is with Chun Jae-man and Steve Lee.

Sang-gook expresses more misgivings about this continued revenge plan, which shows that he’s growing balls of his own. Now that they have the records, why are they conspiring with Chun Jae-man? Doesn’t this suggest that they’re no better — that they’re contributing to the corruption in Korea?

Jin-pyo is displeased to have his orders questioned by yet another subordinate, and says that if the tarnished agents were ever going to have their good names restored, it would’ve happened ages ago: “The last enemy is someone you can’t even imagine.” He tells Sang-gook to leave if he can’t work with him.

Instead, Sang-gook calls Yoon-sung to tip him off about Jin-pyo possessing the confidential file, which contains info on Operation Clean Sweep as well as the last target. Sang-gook admits that he’s tired of this revenge, and gives Yoon-sung his chance to steal the file: Dad is out in a meeting, and Sang-gook will buy some time. But he must move quickly.

Yoon-sung arrives at Dad’s lair and gets to work unscrambling the safe’s code, which takes some time to decode.

Pulling a plug from under the car’s hood gets the car to stall, but Jin-pyo is sharp enough to see that the problem is stupidly simple to correct, which makes him immediately suspect that Sang-gook did this on purpose. Hurrying home, Jin-pyo mutters, “Yoon-sung can’t know yet.” Frankly, I’m just glad he didn’t kill Sang-gook on the spot for insubordination.

The safe-cracker unscrambles the passcode, and Yoon-sung clicks opens the safe just as a suited figure steps into the room behind him. Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.

But it’s the prosecutor’s voice, not Dad’s, that asks, “Shall we look together?”

Yoon-sung faces Young-ju and assumes his cover, saying smoothly that he’s here to find the contract he signed with Steve Lee, because he feels he’s getting scammed. Young-ju tells him his days of slipping away with those excuses are over, and lays out what he knows: Jin-pyo is the sole survivor of Operation Clean Sweep, and Yoon-sung is the City Hunter who delivered Senator Lee into his hands.

Yoon-sung reminds him that he has no proof, and Young-ju returns that the proof is in that safe. If it contains the NIS file on Operation Clean Sweep, he’s proven himself correct. Oh crap, he has a point.

And then…Jin-pyo’s angry voice booms, “What the hell are you doing in here?” Oh good lord, I didn’t think his arrival would ever make me happy, but I’m simultaneously relieved that Yoon-sung has slipped out of the prosecutor’s clutches, AND disappointed that Young-ju has failed to capture his quarry. Oh man, this is like the Dokko Jin/Pil-joo quandary all over again: How can we get both men to win, when one man’s victory necessitates the other’s defeat?

Jin-pyo points out that Young-ju’s currently on probation, and asks pointedly whether he’s come armed with a search warrant. He addresses Yoon-sung as a business partner — a lie that Young-ju refuses to let distract him.

Young-ju declares that he will prove right now that all his allegations are true, and heads for the safe, shoving Yoon-sung out of his way, which sends Jin-pyo reaching for his sword-cane.

Except…the safe is empty. And from the shock on all three men’s faces, this was not a part of the plan. Although it’s a lucky thing for Young-ju’s own safety that it wasn’t here, judging from Jin-pyo’s response.

The book turns out to be in the hands of…Chun Jae-man? Wut now?

It turns out Chun isn’t quite such a blind fool for money, because he’d smelled something fishy about Steve Lee from the start, and now he has his confirmation that he’s involved in all this. He tells Creepy Minion to research Steve Lee, because he’s likely to be related to the dead agents — or may even be that survivor Young-ju mentioned. If he’s the City Hunter, he’ll be back to recover the confidential file.

Not surprisingly, Chun’s also responsible for the dead NIS employee. Young-ju had arrived in time to talk to him, but the man died before the ambulance arrived.

Dayum. I kind of like that Chun Jae-man’s a slippery fish. The only alarm he displays is upon hearing that Kyung-hee appears to have been sent abroad. He orders Mr. Creepy to find her, explaining merely that she’s “my last hidden card.”

Secret affair alert!

At home, Yoon-sung muses that Chun is behind the theft, and also the NIS employee’s murder. He admits being disappointed that he wasn’t able to see the file, because he’d been curious to read about his bio-dad. He asks Shik-joong to buy a picture frame off home shopping so he can frame a photo of his father to give to Mom. She’d said she had no pictures of him left, and he figures he can find some in the Secret Service records.

Jin-pyo decides that people see him as weak, which makes me shudder to think what he thinks he’s capable of, if we’re all underestimating him. He declares that it’s better that the confidential book disappear than fall into Yoon-sung’s hands.

Yoon-sung goes to the Blue House library in search of the appropriate Secret Service facebook, only to find 1983’s volume missing from the shelves. A man asks, “Are you looking for this?”

COMMENTS

I’m not the hugest fan of birth secrets. Even when they’re used well, I feel like they’re such a familiar trope in K-dramas that they’ve lost their narrative punch. So when the hints of Yoon-sung’s paternity finally crystallized in this episode — all but confirming President Choi to be the true bio-dad — I was partly disappointed. It’s not set in stone, but in addition to the bean aversion and Kyung-hee’s shiftiness when Yoon-sung asks about his father, we have the two “hidden cards”: Chun’s card against the President is Kyung-hee, and Jin-pyo’s card against Yoon-sung is the President’s identity as the next target. It adds up.

That said, if we must have birth secrets, I appreciate the narrative purpose this one serves. It’s not mere makjang twist, because the hints have been laid into the story along the way, and the revelation actually heightens the conflict as we approach the climax. I’d always assumed that the final battle for Target No. 5 would culminate in a fraught father-son struggle. I just had the wrong father.

Now that President Choi is (almost assuredly) Dad, that means Yoon-sung is his greatest weakness. And while we know that Yoon-sung is unable to kill, he’s been satisfied with bringing corrupt men to their own ruin. Will he be able to do the same with President Choi? Especially since it seems, from what we’ve seen, that he probably doesn’t have a closet full of embezzling, backdoor-dealing, toxic-waste-dumping skeletons as the others did. He’s a good man who collapsed under pressure, who “missed his timing” to do the right thing, as he explained in the last episode.

Jin-pyo has been determined to keep Target No. 5’s identity from Yoon-sung all series long, which made me wonder whether it was to shelter him, or if there was a darker purpose. I’m not convinced Jin-pyo still has a heart — he’s got trace remnants of it, maybe, but he’s mostly cut it out or let it blacken into a rage-filled rock of vengeance — so I’m going with the latter. Especially since he’s equally insistent that Yoon-sung must take out the last target with his own two hands.

Perhaps Jin-pyo is just saving the best (i.e., the cruelest) for last, so he can destroy the president using his very own son, revealed at just the right time for maximum hurty impact. It would probably destroy Yoon-sung, too, of whom I do believe he is genuinely fond — but seeing his willingness to run him over to make a point makes me think he’d get over that. He’s raised Yoon-sung with single-minded purpose, perhaps intending all along that he should die at the critical moment, like a tool. Sort of like Dumbledore, without the soul or the good intentions.

This is also why I’m not actually annoyed at Yoon-sung for pushing Nana away, or with her for abiding by his wishes. In most other dramas, the reasoning is pretty weak and doesn’t quite support the act, but in this one, Yoon-sung’s all but convinced he’s headed toward death. He knows it would hurt Nana to be left behind loving him, but it’s also for his own sake that he has to keep his distance, because it’s like he feels it would be selfish to be with her now, only to ditch her later. I don’t like them apart and depressed, but I get why they’re doing it. Urg! Why do you hurt me so, City Hunter?

NOOOOO!!! Why is the writer doing this to LYS!!! How much more pain does she think she'll need to inflict on him before he finally sends a bullet through his temple?

Callous and cruel as LJP, YS still firmly believes that Daddy holds him dear, and that he will still be affected to see his only son hurt. Turns out Daddy doesn't even care about him, not as his son, not even as a human being! He's nothing more than a mere tool in Daddy's version of the ultimate revenge, all of his 28 years of existence! I cannot imagine how else he could have found meaning in life should Mommy be killed off later. LJP deserves more than a million deaths!!! He robbed YS of his mother, his childhood, his happiness, and eventually his humanity or sanity, whichever happens first.

I am strictly a rom-com person, never a fan of revenge or action stories. But CH baited me with LMH and now I'm trapped! I hate the tragic premise but I cannot stop watching LMH. Gawd LMH, what a role you've landed and what a mess I've got myself into!

i can't agree with you more!!! thank you for articulating everything that has been on my mind abt the writers' penchant of TORTURING our beloved LMH as YS/City Hunter from the beginning till the end!!!

It's like JB's reference to dumbledore is right. So sad! It'll be interesting to see if they can turn this around and let us have a happy ending.

@scarlet

I'm 100% with you in feeling trap. I usually watch rom-com and stay away from melodrama stuff. I initially started watching CH only for LMH and then it seemed like a fun ride so I stuck with it. Like you, now I can only suck it up and bear with the pain because now I'm so invested in YS journey that I cannot stop at this point.

Not only to LYS but to us fans also.

did it occur to anyone that YS's revenge is sort of pointless then? he wanted revenge on the council of 5 because of his "real father"(Mu-yeol) death

but since now that he is the president's son, doesn't that defeat the main purpose for his revenge?

on a side note: i dislike the twist too,but it does explain a lot of things

@Dasotong

I agree with the "whole pointless revenge plan".....

However something just came to me, how about JP doesn't know that YS is the President son?....how twisted can that be!..JP who is trying to avege his bff, yet his son is not his. Ok i might not make sense but CH got me rambling at this point..

That's why JP doesn't want YS to find out. Because if it did, it would lose meaning for him, knowing that his real father is alive. However, JP is hellbent on not finding YS, because once again all he seems to care about his best friend and his fallen comrades. This is why he was okay with stealing Kyung-hee's son, because he probably found out that it wasn't Mu-yeol's child. So he must've been motivated to steal YS not just for the Oct 1983 incident but also to somehow justify the betrayal Mu-yeol would have suffered for his son if he was still alive.

2 things stood out for me

1. Kim Nana being asked to be the president's bodyguard...that was pretty lame...is she qualified? Are there no secret service agents or something...

2. With that appointment, what they are trying to do is have YS and Kim nana point a gun at each other ( like in his dream where they die together) bcoz, if she is protecting him, it means she has to stand between him and the one who would threaten him............so lame..........but let's see what they come up with! Sigh!

I agree that it seems unlikely and predictable, but at the same time, president`s don`t just have one or two bodyguards, so it makes sense that she is part of a larger team protecting him. And if I understood the translation correctly, it seems her supervisor recommended her, which improves my opinion of him from earlier studpid comments he gave...

Actually newbie, there are only three women bodyguards I've seen so far in the show. Nana, her partner, and the lady bodyguard that YS fought with in episode 7. Was there more? I don't remember seeing them.

I think Nana's supervisor once said to YS how he did not like the fact that the Blue House started to hire women as bodyguards. He did think women are cut out for the job. So I guess the fact that there is even female bodyguards at the Blue House is a new thing.

@maymay, oh yeah that reminds me since you mentioned the conversation between Ys and NN's superior during judo training.

On that conversation, NN's superior also mentioned that it was also because of family that NN got hired. Which made me think, NN's dad was probably an important part of Blue House security back considering that they consider hiring NN because of that family ties.

Ch writers are really good in incorporating these tinest bit of details.

0

opps i mean *back then*

I think Nana was promoted because of nepotism. I don't think her supervisor was very happy about it. He said a soon-to-be-retired bodyguard recommended her as a replacement. I also think she will not be protecting the President alone. Usually there are a group of bodyguards protecting the President.

I agree that Nana does not have enough experiences yet to be guarding someone so important. However, I think she was hired as a Blue House bodyguard out of loyalty to her comatose father. I remembered her supervisor once mentioned that she failed her entrance exam three times and she would not be hired in the first place if it wasn't for her father. So I figure this promotion is the same way, I think all the big bosses in the Blue House is just trying to help the poor girl out as she is alone in taking care of her father. They also didn't fired her earlier when she lost her gun to Target 2.

I agree nepotism is not right, but hey, it happens in the real world too.

When the CJM and Mr. Creep are talking at the end of the episode after they have obtained the NIS file, Mr. Creep actually tells CJM that Lee Kyung Hee has left the country for the United States and her name is actually mentioned there.

Ahhh, see now it makes sense how Jin-pyo stole his best friend's son... because it wasn't really his son. He must have felt it appropriate to raise Kyung-hee's illegitimate son as a weapon-for-revenge, not just for the soldier who died but also for her affair with the President. SO. AWESOME.

Jin-pyo stealing Yoon-sung as a child was the one unredeemable factor for me. I mean it's still not okay, but now atleast his motivation makes sense. With that said, I have a feeling that there is some hope left for Jin-pyo... he's going to die for sure, but atleast he'll die protecting Yoon-sung...or something like that.

The whole the president may be the City Hunter's father storyline is LAME. So what if they both don't like beans! Is that suppose to be hereditary or something?! Give me a break show. You're suppose to be more sophisticated than that. Such. lazy. writing. Don't make me expect so much from you based on the middle episodes and then fail me in the last 4 episodes!

Not to mention how unnecessary this is to the story. There is no need for that makjang in this story. Ugh so Da hae has been crushing on her brother?! Why show! why! And City Hunter's mom cheated on Mu yeol?!....And let me guess - Jin pyo probably knew about it too and never said anything?! **cue GIANT eye roll** and the death of my love for this show which so far has allowed me to easily look over all the inconsistencies/absurdities.

i understand how frustrated you are but i hope you will not give up on CH just yet...

after watching so many K-dramas which are either utterly ridiculous for the first half of the series but managed to end with some semblance of logic,
or dramas which are great for the first half but descended into utter idiocy towards the end,
or dramas that started on idiocy and ended with even greater idiocy,
i have learnt to NOT have any expectations when i choose to watch a drama so that i am not in for any disappointments but just watch and see how a drama presents itself and then decide if i want to continue watching it till the end...

the K-dramas that managed to turn out well enough for the most part are so rare...

perhaps you had some expectations of CH when you started watching it and so your disappointment is that much greater? if so, then your disappointment is understandable...

Why did YS mom gave him her wedding ring if MY wasn't his real dad? and why did she sang MY song to YS if MY is not his dad? Also if LK had an romance/affair with the President why was she so scared of him when they met in the car? was it cause he had threaten her before?

Also if we look at the picture that YS had of his mom its very clear that MY, JP, LK and Choi were all Friends at one point...or was this a a love rectangle between this people...

I'd probably say that one time in the past YS's mom and the president had an affair thus the birth of YS. Which target no. 4 knew all along and JP as well. With that, JP is upset that the president didn't take responsibility of YS. That's why he is more happy that the file didn't fall to YS's hands bec. truth will unravel.

And Nana guarding the president will have it's toll later, he will catch a bullet from YS to protect the president and she will die from that. This is just my theory though. I just don't want to get my hopes so high bec. I think the writer is pointing us to a very undeniable, sadistic and traumatic ending of this drama which for me is so absurd.

@newbie, the manga does not have the Daddy issue...

I successfully found a copy of the manga on a comics store (after weeks of searching) and was only reading it halfway thru as a result of my love for CH/LMH.

I'm not yet done reading it though, as watching CH is more worrisome for me. But so far with where I am in the manga, I now totally understand the ranting of the manga fans.

But on the other hand, I'm kinda thankful the CH PD steered away from the original. I'm liking the story for CH much better than the manga. (Probably because the biggest factor is LMH is in it :) )

But on where CH is now and the manga, my longing for Season 2 grows. Depending on how they will end CH, Season 2 can be possible.

Yes I still hate the who Yoon sung's daddy is the President thing. And here in a more concrete and less "jilted audience" sort way reason why....

If the president is Yoon sung's father, it does make the face-off that's to come between them more epic, but the problem for the story is that it feels like it's setting up a rehashing of exactly what happened between Young ju and his father, albeit on a slightly larger scale.

The themes of father/son betrayal, sense of responsibility, guilt etc. where all very well done and thoroughly explored with Young joo and had a more believable set up than this supposedly developing father/son storyline between the president and Yoon sung. I can't understand why the writer wants to go down this road with Yoon sung when it was already so well done and compellingly done with Young joo's character.

I think the better father/son relationship (not as biological father though!) to develop would be Jin pyo and Yoon sung. They actually have a history to refer back to and build upon that can support however it is their new dynamic evolves. I've mentioned this in my other comments, but the relationship btw Jin pyo and Yoon sung has been at a stalemate especially on Jin pyo "the revenge robot's" side. There's a golden story-telling opportunity in developin Jin pyo's character beyond a revenge robot by having him react/respond to the changes in his son (the boy he raised)....

Also, even though I don't know if this make any sense I feel like this whole birth secret thing is really disrespectful to the character Mu yeol is...It's upsetting to me because it's like saying the fact that these 5 men (one of whom is the president) killed Mu yeol and 19 others, isn't enough reason and isn't personal enough to make the last face-off btw president and Yoon sung EPIC. I just can't agree with that given that the wrong these men committed at Nampo is the reason for the drama in the story- wrongs committed gone unpunished. This birth secret storyline seems to undercut that so that direction for the story does sit well with me. Hopefully that makes sense...>sigh<...waiting for next week...

Unless the writers are just teasing with our heads and YS at the end is just MY son after all. I mean I pick my beans too does that make me President Choi's daughter...I don't thinks so rite, BUT this is a drama and not real life so I guess we have to go with the flow. I love seeing the reactions from everyone (including JB) about what they perceive to be the "twist" in the plot.

Frankly, I don't see it as a twist - this plot point was carefully crafted from the first episode, and I really take exception to those commenters who have typified the writer(s) of City Hunter as lazy or misdirected.

This creation/adaptation of CH has been meticulously laid out from the beginning. The flow of story-telling has been almost flawless in execution and there has been no "dumbing down" to make viewers happy just for the sake of ratings. (LTM, are you listening?!)

The production pace has been frantic but the sure hand of the PD, along with the writers & actors hasn't wavered.

For those who didn't like this last episode, every story of this magnitude must reach a point just before the final push to retrench, restate and finalize for the conclusion.

The writer knows where we're going.
We just need to buckle up, hunker down and get ready to take the trip together.

Thank you so much for such eloquent wording of your thoughts. I agree with you entirely.

This 'birth secret' just explain all of JP actions since episode 1. I always wonder why JP kidnap baby YS, why train him so hard, why force him to kill all the target. I've never really understand JP single-mindedness in forcing YS to carry out the revenge his way until now. I mean if he really loved MY, why is he so cruel to MY's son?

You're right about how this plot point was crafted into the first episode. JP did mention that he will carry out the cruelest revenge and nothing is more crueler than this I think.

I love how some of this clue was given to us since the beginning and none of us have notice it until now. Now looking back in hindsight, I can see a bunch of little clues hinting at this event.

This is going to cause so much heartbreak later on and I don't know yet if my fragile heart can handle it.

My brief thoughts:

Since City Hunter as a manga is really well-known and operates on a case-by-case basis, as this is sort of a 'City Hunter Origins' story and doing pretty well in ratings I'd ideally hope they'd leave it open for a season 2, even if one is never done. This means that YS probably won't die at the end of the series. If he finds out the President is his dad, he probably won't want to kill him or take revenge. If anyone dies at the end of the series, it will have to be Jin-Pyo as he is incapable of leading a normal life now.

The ongoing push-and-pull between YS and Nana is getting tiring. If he's going to break, he has to do it cleanly. Walking away after you stumbled upon your girl reminiscing at a spot you were planning to reminisce about is too little, too late.

Young-ju is already in the process of getting punished for his actions. We know he can be too impulsive from previous episodes, but to me this gives the drama more depth. He's become single-minded in his pursuit of the City Hunter so he has a clear objective and is following it. Honestly, if he were being a perfect by-the-books prosecutor, would he be half as interesting?

Also... What happened to Sa-Hee? She was really awesome and I feel like it's a slap in the face to set up her story with no emotional pay off for those of us who'd followed her up until this point... A 2 second scene for an entire week doesn't count. Come on, Show! You give us a second female lead with depth and her own personality that isn't centered around ruining our OTP and then you drop her like a hot potato? Does anyone know if there is an outside reason for her cut screen time?

Don't get me wrong, I still love this show. But finally, after 14 perfect episodes, it's lagging just a bit. No show can be perfect, alas.

I don't understand why people are having problems with the Prez as the bio dad. To me, it actually makes the most perfect sense. It's the most reasonable storyline. It's the anchor to JP's revenge. What better way to avenge the deaths of his comrades than to steal the son of the man who betrayed them and raise the son to be his killer. It's EPIC and so devious and badass! That's why he waited this long - to exact the cruelest revenge.

In the first episode, most of us did not understand JP's motivation for stealing YS and raising him to train as a mercenary if he truly was his best friend's son. That did not make sense at all. For the same reason, it also wouldn't make any sense if JP was the bio dad. Why would you do that to your own child?

This Prez/YS storyline does parallel the YJ/dad betrayal but this gives us an added layer. I want to see how YS is going to react to this. It was amusing for him to watch how YJ was going to handle his dad's betrayal. Now that he's in the same boat, how will he handle it?

Also, why are we assuming that the mom had an affair? What if the President raped her during a drunken stupor? Ok, I think I'm going overboard now...

I don't think the president raped YS mom...that's way to melo for this drama. I don't think the president, Choi Eung-chan, would ever have done something like that because (if I remember correctly) he was the only one of the 5 who was appalled when he learned the other 4 wanted to kill the soldiers on the mission. The president thought the submarine sent to Nampo was to rescue the soldiers and that's why he was able to promise so sincerely to JP and MY that the gov. was not going to abandon them. The president has always been the one to try to temper the evilness of the rest of the group...from the beginning right up to this episode.

Basically I'm saying I don't think the president use to be a bad person (until he was a total coward and let those soldiers get killed). So yeah, I don't think the president raped YS's mom. No rapist president. That's my vote.

@sm

I have the same view as you on this birth secret subject. Even though I personally don't like birth secret in drama, but in this particular case, it really make perfect sense. This would explain why JP did all the things he did at the beginning like kidnapping a baby, raising him and training him to be a killing machine, lying about his mother, forcing YS to kill by threatening Nana and Ajusshi life. I've never really understand how JP could be so cruel to his best friend's son, but if YS is the President's son, then it's totally a different story.

I also love the parallel between YS/President and YJ/his father issue. I think YS will have a harder time though since he does not know the truth yet.

Oh my poor YS, what a sucky life you have. If I were YS, I'll probably kill myself already or at least check myself into a mental institution.

Well, I'm one of those people who doesn't like the "president is Yoon sung's dad storyline." There are still 4 episodes left so I'm trying not to have too much anxiety and just wait and see what happens. (it is just a drama)

It is true that if JP trained YS to get revenge by killing his own father that would be the ultimate most cold blooded revenge, but I think there are still inconsistencies left. I think JP, as much of a crazed madman as he is, loves YS. That doesn't mean that JP wouldn't still want to use YS for his revenge, but JP has never shown any hint of backing down or being affected by YS struggles. He doesn't have any problem using YS to exact his revenge. You would think JP would be a bit more conflicted towards YS. Even a revenge robot has feelings.

I also think making the president YS dad takes away from a really strong part of the story which is that these men, the 5, should be brought to justice because of the wrongs they've done while entrusted with the care of the nation, Korea. They're betrayal was not just a personal betrayal, ie. you killed my dad, but also a bigger betrayal - you brought dishonor to the country and it's people. That's why YS insist on bringing the 5 to justice through the law and not just killing them like JP wants to do.

Wow. I've spent way too much time thinking about this. But I'm sticking to my guns. I just want YS to have a chance to be happy with his mom (an honest woman who didn't abandon him and didn't cheat on her husband), and the memory of Mu yeol, his biological father. I don't want him to go through what I think is really unnecessary to the story to make it more "epic."

I really think kdramas should take a 1 year hiatus on the use of birth secrets. I'm suffering from an overdose.

I cannot stop thinking how they going to reveal all the secrets - birth, siblings, father/son, mother/son, past and current love triangles/rectangles, operation clean sweep...

Cannot wait to see the reaction on each person's face when the truth unapologetically drops in their laps -- president, YS, YJ, Dae Hye, NN, Ajusshi, JP, Mom, Eun Ah -- how would they find out and how would they react...

Oh, it's going to be good, CH, please please don't disappoint.

This drama has been and will be bumpy all the way to the end.

I guess I'm more reckless than YS bec. I better experience love than not love at all!. But, leaving Nana was responsible though (ok acceptable).

The President as his bio father (weird and how on earth that happen?!). A quick affair or was it forced ? JP and Target no. 4 knew all these facts and it's on the file stolen I'm sure.

Nana will die from YS's bullet to the president. ( well not far fetch, she'll be the bodyguard of the president and we know how dedicated she is to her job, right)

YS ( if alive), after all these madness will go away with Ahjussi and his mom (if still alive) will live happily somewhere. But, will stay single for the rest of his life.

This is definitely the saddest episode of CH. I cried so much when I watched it raw and cried even more when I watched it with sub.

Is this YS way of admitting that Nana is stronger than him in controlling her emotions? Since he doesn't have the strength anymore to stay away from her, he is asking her to be the one to push him away instead. Gee YS, that's like the hardest thing to ask any girl to do.

I'm imagining the emotional turmoil our hero YS, is going on right now...

...so just for this comment, I'll give him a break with the Daddy issue....
(and a break for me too, as my heart is still bleeding dry, I don't think it can pump no more :( )

I simply just want to delve on the heartbreaking fountain scene. What can I say, I'm a hopeless romantic. A sucker for touching scenes like that..What makes it more tear-jerker is the excellent acting we've received from LMH/PMY. Not to mention, that the background music on that scene is my 2nd favorite song in the OST (Lonely Day by JSymphony). (*sigh)

After NN walked past him in the BH hallway and as the music starts playing, I am already howling. Then it intensifies when YS looked at the photo frame and walked on the street as a LONELY, LONELY, LONELY MAN. (*tears flowing continously*). When he spotted NN and started walking towards her, I CAN SO FEEL THE PAIN. Then their full-of-love-full-of-angst exchanges :(

When NN said the last words "So can’t you tell me that you’ll finish this and come back to me? Please.” That put tears into YS eyes, I swear I found myself on the floor howling like a kid who lost her candy. :(

(And I don't think I'll ever recover on how hurtful that must have been for our hero.)

@kaye, yep "So Goodbye" was played when YS walked away from NN...

"Lonely Day" was the song played the moment NN said "I got it!' in the hallway and walked away from YS. It's the background music while he was walking until he saw NN in the fountain side.

I guess I so LOVE and HATE that scene that every little detail matters to me! :)

and OMG that fountain scence was just PAINFUL to watch period. I give LMH and PMY soo much props for pulling that scene so well. I mean YS tearing up while listening to NN basically begging him to reconsider their breakup was soooo soooo painful and beautifully done.

Yet what really Kills me is that YS is going to the FINAL battle ALONE! just him and his shadow...at this point he can't depend on no one, cause they all have a high risk of getting shot in the cross fire....

0

Oh smashingalou, you are one brave soul. After I finished watching it with sub, I have not been able to watch this episode again. This episode is just too painful for me on so many level. The pain that I feel so keenly for both YS and Nana is too much that I'm afraid to experience it again.

I also love the Lonely Day song. I always thought that song is the perfect theme for our CH/YS. He is definitely a lonely soul lost in this lonely city.

All I can say now is that YS better have a happy ending or else I will become a City Hunter myself and hunt the down the writer for the emotional wreckage he/she put me through.

I want Yoon sung to prove to Jin pyo and to himself (YS is currently convinced he's just going to die hence leaving Nana) that he can avenge his father's death in a just way and have love and a family.

I mean how sad and heartbreaking to have a person not believe they can have love or a family. *buckets-o-tears* :'( Poor YS is just a wreck right now. I don't know how he is still able to function!

Thanks for the recap!

I have to say though, I enjoy reading the comments even more than the recaps/watching the show sometimes - very insightful, very imaginative and often hilarious -they could be compiled into a thesis! :-)

Really did not enjoy this episode - as many above have said : too much angst, too much kdrama cliche (this birth father secret thing is just getting waaay tired).

Why couldn't the script writers just stick to the original manga and make it a straight-forward, high-quality action drama with just enough romance?? This is where I sometimes appreciate the 11-episode Jdramas with less unbelievable twists!

i believe it is the right and prerogative of the writer/s and PDs of CH whether or not, in your words, "to stick to the original manga..."

the writer/s and PDs never said they would and if you expect them to and find CH disappointing, then its not their fault...

you are free to choose which drama you wish to watch, just as the writer/s and PDs are free to make a drama in any way they please - if you are not happy with it, then you should stop watching, but i believe you do not have the right to complain...no one forced you to watch CH...

Rights/ artistic freedom whatever you might call it, yes I agree, but if viewers have to accept everything wholesale without having their own opinions then better screen it in a communist country.

So the unidentified guy must be the President. I think the face was burned or blurred in that picture set.

If you are talking about Nana's parents and the truth behind the accident yes, that where her aunt got the info that JY dad was the culprit.

Actually eventhough that was a very tiny scene, it held at lot of meaning, cause it shows that not everyone blames JY for covering for his father and the aunt knows how much JY has worked for his status and accomplisments.

YS's real dad might be the President would make a fat splash in the finale episodes.

I got mad at YS for kinda flip flopping on NANA.
He takes care of her and they grow closer but then he lets her go again.

I love NANA for sticking with his request though the fountain scene had me worried. She knows what's on his mind even if he doesn't say.

I hope this series ends with a happy note still.

It would be really cool for a City Hunter 2 but the storyline may not be as good.

Everybody around here has been going nuts by
the unexpected "Three Men and a Baby" plot twist.

I thought that the new dad in Episode #1 wasn't
too emotionally thrilled about the birth of his son,
but usually nobody hugs anybody in a Kdrama,
so I figured that even a hand shake would be
wildly passionate. :) Anyway, this plot twist
has made me VERY SUSPICIOUS. Suppose........
evil dad THINKS that LMH is the President's son,
but that evil dad REALLY is the father. With all of
the high-tech equipment used in each CH episode,
can't somebody go to a Korean drug store and
just buy a DNA home sample kit? And remember:
we've never seen a scene of the evil dad with a
dish of rice and beans IN FRONT OF HIM. Maybe
he hates beans in his rice, too.

In other news, Episode #16 has made me 99.9%
positive that the little "coin jar boy" at the hospital
is the same little sweet potato that was on "the
zoo date" two years ago in BoF!!!! I wrote of my
suspicions for the Episode #15 comments (@77)
but now I'm pretty sure that it's the same child.
Hooray!!!! So while everybody is upset about all
the LMH angst to come, I must confess that I'm
busy doing a snappy, happy dance.

Please forgive me. :)

I agree with you about the self-proclaimed
"Renaissance woman" but that's no reason
for you to avoid the end moments of Episode
#22 and the few beginning moments of
Episode #23 for "the BoF zoo date."

LMH does "the jealous boyfriend" perfectly, :)
asks if the little boy is more important than he is,
(forgets to ask if the kid has more money than
he does) and follows along like a real grouch.

And this is the only time in BoF when his jealousy
doesn't make him beat up his rival!!!

At one point he picks up the little boy like an
unwanted nick-nack (by his jacket's shoulders)
and sets him aside. There are some really
charming scenes with the little boy and a
conversation that takes place between the
two leads in front of THE ELEPHANT AREA and
finally, the little boy returns home asleep in
Jun-pyo's arms. It's really lovely to watch the
change that takes place. Cover one eye, if you
have to, but watch "the zoo date"....it's worth it.

Boys Over Flowers....a blessing or a curse?

I would hope that Lee Min-ho considers it a
blessing....BIG TIME! Of course, if eighty years
from now (he should live so long) he plays the
role of a 104 year-old man, there will STILL be
some fans who'll yell at their TV: "Gu Jun-pyo
is playing a new part as a 104 year-old man." :)

There are worse things that can happen to him.

I didn't know LMH from a bowl of soup, when
I first stumbled across BoF, but the "stain"
scene on the fake bridge in the fake Venice
(the shopping mall in Macau) followed by the
"are you happy, now" scene with the evil mom,
totally blew me away. What a one-two punch
that was! Plus it's LMH's fault that he acted those
scenes as powerfully as he did to cause them
to be UNFORGETTABLE to his fans.

Yeah, yeah, ladies, I know he's hot. But so is
a hibachi grill. But a hibachi grill can't act.

If in LMH's next role he plays an orange juggler
in the circus, and the role after that he's an evil
ax murderer, fine. I can go along with the story.
But until my brain is totally melted, and "the
senior moments" kick in full-time :) I'll frequently
watch my BoF DVD copy and recall: THE PART OF
GU JUN-PYO, AS PLAYED BY THE BRILLIANT ACTOR,
LEE MIN-HO.

I keep thinking what CH would have been with another actress playing Nana.

When I see LMH on screen, I see only the City Hunter in all his blazing glory.

When I see PMY on screen, I see PMY trying to act like Nana.

I don't know. It struck me even more this episode. I did like PMY in SKKS, but maybe because I never saw her in anything prior, didn't realize the lack of acting ability. The disparity in acting skill from LMH and PMY is cringe-worthy at times.

Because PMY IS spunky and tomboyish in real life (this is her own admission), it didn't require and doesn't require much for her to act the spunky characterizations of Yoon-hee (in SKKS) and Nana.

I've been trying to be forgiving about how incredibly unrealistic the Nana character is. A big part of why it's just too unbelievable, the whole Secret Service bit, has to do with PMY being (mis)cast as Nana.

It seriously stinks because one moment I'm aching for Yoon-sung's pain, and in another, I'm guffawing over Nana being appointed as the President's guard and then rolling my eyes at the "Yoon-hee" tears. And on Nana, her earpiece while on duty just looks like a toy she wears when playing secret service agent.

ARGHS!!!

I don't know about the President being CH's father. The writer said there would be a plot twist at the finale, and I highly doubt it's these beans thing.

If we notice on the previous episodes, JP has YS mom's picture, and on episode 16 he goes through all the trouble of bringing her a music she likes to the hospital.

This is probably a crackpot theory, but what if in the end it's actually revealed that JP is the father. Can you imagine how he will feel, knowing he put his own son through all that?
Then again it doesn't make much sense that if JP had a relationship with YS mom, why didn't they just marry?

random thoughts:

1. how did LMH hold the tears in his eyes so well without actually dropping them, how does he do it?

2. LMH should go to Vegas after CH wraps up, let Sin City free him from his YS character, you know, immerse in nothing but pleasure.

3. LMH is born to wear pink. I was rewatching PT and saw him in a peachy pink jacket. He looked dang fine in it. Will check to see if he wore pink in BOF.

I am gonna stop talking about LMH now. Gotta go back to real life

Thank you! I couldn't stop laughing when I saw him in that pair of mauvish pink pants and that flowery shirt.

Man, something about pink and flowery patterns, they seem to find LMH in every drama he is in...

@ corn tea

1. First time I saw him do that was in BoF, the scene where he confronted his mom about not touching JanDi. I was like WOW! He's a good actor to be able to do that.

2. I don't want LMH to go to Hollywood. I want him to stay where he is. It's nearer for me to visit him. HAHAHA!! ;)

3. I laughed at what he wore in BoF when they went to New Caledonia. :D

Why am I so sad for YS? I think he is getting the bad end of the bargain on this deal. So he has 3 daddies and none gave him the love that Ajussi did to him. Can Mr. Ajussi just be his Dad really!

Why do I get the feeling were going to have a super tragic ending on this drama. (I hope I'm wrong). I want YS to have a happy life ( a long one too!)

one of the best written drama of 2011 by far - each end of the episode is a great cliffhanger . The actors and actresses of this Mega-Stars drama are superb

OMG!! Javabeans!! While I was watching this episode I thought the same thing!!! that there must be another birth secret. It all adds up!! Kim Nana now as the presidents guard is another OMG moment. She is the one that is going to kill Yoon-sung while protecting the president. This drama is turning out to be soo sad. I'm convinced that it is not going to have the happy ending of Yoon-sung, nana, Adjussi, and mom even his crazy step dad living happily ever after. its so heart wrenching to watch. What a insane climax this drama is going to have!! just the thought of it makes me feel like I can't stand to watch the disaster that is about to unfold. absolutely the most awesome drama's I have ever seen. It is such an emotional roller-coaster!
