Happy Friday the 13th to Beanies all over the world! I do hope everyone is well and staying safe today.
Funny thing, last week I made plans to have lunch with a friend today and kept thinking Mar 13th? Do I have plans or something?

Then I remembered - KINGDOM season 2!!!
hmmm this says something weird about my priorities doesn't it..

Hi Everyone! ..... I hope all of you are doing well today. With everything that's going on worldwide regarding the coronavirus, I wish all of you stay safe and healthy. Be careful dear Beanies!

On a different note, I continue to be puzzled by my laptop. For about a week now, I haven't been able to "like" some Beanie posts/comments and I haven't been able to post comments and/or reply on others. I don't even know if this will be posted on the OT here when I click "send". The thing is, it's sort of hit and miss .... it doesn't happen all the time or with all the Beanie posts, just some of them. I usually use the Explorer browser and I've already tried clearing some things and deleting others. I don't know what to do anymore. Any suggestions??

This week:
I'll Find You on a Beautiful Day - The slow pace totally works with this drama. Definitely missed the characters this week.

Hyena - I'm caught up with this and yeah, I think I'm going to enjoy this one. I have to say I've never been a huge fan of actor Joo Ji-hoon but I'm liking him in his role here.

Forest - I continue to shake my head with this one ...... yet I keep on watching! *laughing*

That's all for now. Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

@lordcobol Thanks for the response, certainly appreciated! The ad-blocker is the same one the machine's been using for years. Never had a problem until a week ago. I'm almost afraid to mess with it as it's been quite useful up to now. Short-term solution has been a change of browers.

I would have suggested switching browsers like you did and I've never had a problem with Chrome. Have you updated your version of Explorer browser?

Required fields are marked *

@stpauligurl Chrome is what I switched to and things seem ok. I have seen in the last few days, on certain sites, a little announcement that a new Explorer browser is available and my version will no longer be supported. I will most certainly have to make that change I just don't know if it's only for the newer versions of Windows (I have 8.1). I obviously have to do some investigating!

1

Good to hear @korfan I've used Chrome for years and have hardly any problems with it. And I too have heard about the newer Explorer browser - but I don't pay attention as I don't use it.
And I still use Windows 7 at home.

1

@korfan. You can't "like" posts and you have Win 8.1? That explains it - "like" and 8.1 rarely go together :)

6

My problem is the ad-blocker too. It's like a large ad is over some of the page text which I'm not seeing because of the blocker but it is actually covering the text so they won't click. It is usually resolved if I refresh the page a few times. Don't know why. Maybe the ad changes size or place on refresh.

I'm curious about Hospital Playlist, so I might check that one out.

Hm, the same thing is happening to me,and I discovered that (at least in the case of my laptop) it has something to do with whether I scrolled enough - really, if it doesn't wotk - I can't comment or like something, I scroll the page a bit more and then it works. It might be the same with you - it can be something related to how our browsers read the page's code...

Have a healthy and happy weekend, dearest Beanies!

From midnight onwards schools, pubs, restaurants, and lots of other public places in my country will be closed for at least 3 weeks to prevent the Corona virus from spreading even more. Lots of people are technically unemployed and lots of events are cancelled. I am starting my new job in a hospital next Monday, and despite working in the secretarial back office, I am a bit afraid to be honest. There is also the cramped public transport that should be avoided if possible, but I will have to figure out how to get there by foot first before I literally take that step.

It is quite ironic how little change it brings on a personal level. I lived in a self-imposed lockdown while unemployed, so I am used to staying indoors a lot. It is a pity that most weekend activities got cancelled, but they can easily be postponed to better times. I personally prefer stricter rules to be sure over all the confusion and stress a lot of people had the last few weeks about whether they should cancel stuff or not.

I hope all Beanies and their loved ones can get through this without infection, unemployment or unhappiness in particular. Because I fear for the people who can no longer do the things or visit the people that keep them going as a result of the lockdowns.

To end on a slight positive note: the employment agency is finally taking care of the paperwork as we speak. This makes my employment next week official, believable and ready to be announced to my loved ones! :D

All educational institutes have been closed till 6th April atleast, in my country as well. And in the province where I reside, they will be off for as long as 30th may!! My uni still hasn't sent out an official notice, I have an assignment due in class tomorrow which I haven't even touched yet because I'm hoping we'll get the notice soon but out professor keeps saying that if there's no official.notice from our uni then there will be class!! The uncertainty is causing me anxiety!! Wishing you and everyone else the best of luck in fighting the virus!

My father had rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune system attacking the joints. He was lucky because the doctor knew very fast what was the problem and he took the treatment for 2 years. But the kind of treatment has side effects so we were happy when his doctor said he could stop it. But it was only one month ago, so I don't want to take risks when I take the train 2 hours by day. I can be infected without having big symptoms.

#4amMusings
I find it really weird when female characters call the male leads with their titles e.g. Directir-nim. Don't get me wrong I don't mind it when they do it initially because both characters are strangers at that point so its appropriate and makes sense or when they do it in a professional setting like how Yi Seo calls Sae Royi "Sajang-nim"! It would be weird if she called him something else!
In Goblin Kim Go Eun's character called Gong Yoo "Ajusshi" almost throughout the run of the drama. I get it why she called him that initially but after romantic developments wasn't it really weird? Similarly in #Still17 Sae Ri calls Woo Jin Ajusshi!! I understood why she initially did that and the "poop ajushhi" was funny but its ep9 and there have been clear romantic develoments between them so pleaase drop the "Ajushhi". And these are just a few dramas! So many times even after both parties confess and they officially start dating--the calling by your title--continues and it's strangely off putting! Like please you are in a relationship with him now stop calling him "Director-nim" if you are not at the office!! In this matter, "I'll go to you when the weather is nice" is very refreshing! I loved it when Hae Won called "Eun Seap-ah"! It signifies familiarity and closeness! I do understand that it's the korean culture where calling anyone by name is very disrespectful unless they are your age (hence the Eun Seap-ah) and I honestly love that (ik I'm old school) I just think that when you get in a relationship the titles should be dropped. It seemed so weird everytime Park Bo Young's character still called Jo Jung Sun's character "chef" even when they were clearly very romantically involved with each other!!
PS: I dearly missed "I'll go to u when the weather is nice" this week!

I was watching a j-drama yesterday, where the FL was calling the ML 'sensei' and this kinda thought appeared to me too. I realise it happens a lot and my feelings about it flip flops between these things:

1. Initially started as professionalism or respect (due to age/seniority) which is fine, but as the story progressed it also felt like subtle discrimination - like trying to assert that the ML is confident & experienced while the FL is a young rookie unsure of herself, so not cool.

2. Then the Asian culture that's ingrained in me also thinks of course people should be addressed properly. I find it quite off-putting when a person calls someone older just by their names.

Well, this is my 12am musings, hope it makes sense.

Season 2 of Love in Tokyo (the ISWAK J-remake). She STILL calls her husband Irie-kun. Never at any moment in the entire drama does she call him anything else. His first name is Naoki and it SO JARRING when you hear his friends, or his family (parents, sibling) or this random girl who had a crush on him ALL calling him NAOKI but his WIFE--the person sharing his bed calls him Irie-kun. I found that very annoying. Oh, and for the record (if you've never seen it) the characters are the same age.

2
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

That is extreme! This is why there's formal and informal speech, as we get closer and more comfortable with a person we naturally switch to informal. Some dramas just fail at it - but most case it's female to male. How come MLs don't keep calling their FL formally?

3
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I've no idea, but I'll say this: in the very last ep of Love in Tokyo Naoki calls his wife by her first name (as he does pretty much throughout the entire drama) and says, "I love you Kotoko" and she looks up at him and sort of gasps at him in breathless wonder, "I love YOU Irie-kun!"
I'll go through phases where I wont even notice the formality and then there are times where it grates on my raw nerves

2

😂😂🤦🏻‍♀️
From the few j-dramas ive seen, the FLs tend to have quite a few breathless wonder moments.

Because i like to watch just for ‘mindless entertainment’ I normally let it go unnoticed whatever underlying message or social cues a drama gives out (which is why i’m always impressed by reviews and in-depth analysis - so much thought goes into it!) But lately I just start to pay attention and on my recent rewatch of Friends, i find that they actually make quite a lot of sexist jokes. And on the gazillionth rewatch of My Lovely Kim Sam Soon, the FL is really just a jerk, not a brooding hot Hyun Bin. Heh..

P/s i dont know how to tag u Isa!

Oh yes that's another pet peeve many of us must have!

@bluewaters20 MeloMe,
I am kind of glad NICE WEATHER (that is what I am sticking with) was postponed this week. I watched the first four episodes and am now caught up. I am a big Seo Kang-joon fan and as much as I would have loved to see another SKJ action drama (a la WATCHER) I really enjoyed NW.
One thing that pleases me is that Eun-seob (SKJ) has a loving family. This makes up for the family from hell Joon-young (SKJ) had in THE THIRD CHARM.

In WATCHER SKJ’s physicality is Lee Joon-gi (esque). Fantastic. I loved it.

Suggested viewing. If you would like to see some of SKJ’s recent work. After NICE WEATHER I would suggest you watch his most recent three dramas in this order:
1. ARE YOU HUMAN TOO? (2018). This was my first SKJ drama and made me a big fan. His performance of the dual roles Nam Shin and Nam Shin III maybe considered iconic (said with a smile). The drama was recapped and beanies had a ball;
2. WATCHER (2019j. Great crime thriller with a 3 lead format including Han Suk-kyu of ROMANTIC TEACHER, DOCTOR KIM fame. With 3 leads SKY was not required to carry the whole load and he was terrific; and then go on to
3. THE THIRD CHARM (2018). Notwithstanding what some sites say this is not a romantic comedy but a drama. TTC is anything but a comedy. It did have some comic moments early on especially when SKJ was in his college years. His co-lead Esom gave a tremendous, heart breaking performance and received some grief for it.

I commented on the recap but I'm gonna comment here again.
I'm happy that Yuri has had a change of wardrobe buutt can we please get an explanation? Like did she buy them of her own accord or did her friend got it for her or what? Because this questions been bothering me a lot. And while we are on the subject, what Kindergarten hires someone without asking for their Id documents!? #PlotHole
Similarly in Still 17, it bothered me that Sae Ri's hair were open and then suddenly they were tied? Where did the hair tie come from? It's not hard to make a leap and assume she borrowed one from Jennifer but can we please get a small line/scene about it? Also how did Hee Soo hire her without requesting an Id document? Honestly it seems like a wasted opportunity to me. We could have had a whole scene of her finally acquiring an id and feeling one degree closer to being an adult!!

Hi beanies, I’m looking forward to ep 13 Itaewon Class and Hospital Playlist tonight! I have to cancel a flight that was planned for next Thursday to visit my brothers. I still may drive the 11 hrs, not sure. I can’t get through to the airlines to cancel (6 hr hold time) so I’m going to drive to the really tiny airport later and see if they can help in person. I can’t imagine how scary it might be trying to return from overseas etc. Just so everyone keeps a cool head and treats others respectfully in the process. I’ve been sending a box of nonperishables ($25 gets free shipping from Target for example) to people I know that can’t get out easily or shouldn’t be out for their health concerns. Soups, crackers, tea, tissues, granola bars, applesauce cups, laundry soap, shampoo ... things like that. Blessings and good health to all the people who work at distribution centers and local businesses, health care workers, long haul drivers - All the behind the scenes efforts. Thank you for your hard work. Fighting!

Kdramas:

Hyena-- Still waiting for our heroine to be healed emotionally. Loving heroine though. Our lovestruck attorney is so good. His broken heart is so evident.
Nobody Knows-- i love seeing a soft-hearted female homicide detective
Memorist -- such a ridiculous premise and hard to pull off but i'm sucked in. Kinda tiring of religious serial killers though.
Kingdom season 2 -- awaiting Netflix!
cdramas--
Sparrow -- so much fun. Some easy plotting and i'm way too enamored of the bad guys
Guardians of the ancient oath -- sooo good! Absolute great writing. Interesting use of the supernatural. Very original.

Have a great and healthy spring.

I did see it on Amazon, but I don't buy from them anymore. I usually get my Korean DVDs from Yesasia. I should have mention in my previous post that I'm boycotting Amazon. But I do appreciate the info, welh.

My library has officially decided to close all of its branches for the time being. I was shocked to read the email this morning. Libraries ALWAYS stay open during emergencies. We're a place for people with nowhere to go to be. We're a food service area for kids who live with food uncertainty. We're a free daycare when schools are closed for 3 weeks and parents need somewhere "safe" to send their kids because they can't afford to take the weeks off.
I don't know where the kids are going to go and I don't know where those with nowhere to be can go but I do know that the higher-ups worked really hard to put measures in place so that our kids would have a place to eat every day. Its not the best solution, and I wouldn't be surprised if it changes before Monday, but its something that the kids (and the parents) won't have to worry about.
I will pout this: My library, like I said, is closing the doors of ALL of our branches and giving every employee paid time off. Except for managers and back up managers. We have to report to work on Monday. And Tuesday. And Wednesday. And Thursday. And Friday. 8:30-5. Don't ask me what I'll be DOING in that building with my manager for 40 hours next week because I promise I don't know. We're planning a Harry Potter marathon as we clean and sanitize books and movies. But thats as far as we've gotten.
You guys. Those buzzwords are annoying: AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION and FLATTEN THE CURVE.
but apparently that shiz is going to help. So, bring 'em on baby.
And quit hogging the toilet paper ya jerks (not you, beanies, you're lovely as always)! I'm down to 1.5 rolls!

My library system is also closing until April 24th. That's a long time! But then all the schools in my state are closing too.

Are the employees expected to come in? Are they going to get paid for all of that time off? If I went that long without a paycheck I wouldn't be able to pay all of my bills. Im trying to get better at managing my finances and I am to a certain extent, but not to the point that I can not have a paycheck for an entire month and still pay everything on time. That is SUCH a long time!

As far as I can tell, their employees will be paid. Our library system is supported by property taxes, so no matter what happens during this virus crisis their income stream will still be there at normal levels. Since our state, to this date, has been the hardest hit by the virus, it makes sense for this to happen. Washington state is also closing all schools in the state this coming Monday. The death toll in our state is now 42.

That is so so scary. I'm glad that tptb are trying to be aggressive and proactive. I just got off the phone with my boss and our new update is they only want one person in the branch at a time. So im working 9-6 tuesday/Thursday/Saturday and all of our restaurants nd bars have closed. Like...this doesn't feel real.

I am new to Korean drama and dramabeans - I have to say I love both. I like happy endings, and fantasy stories in particular - can anyone recommend the best shows to start with? (I have seen Healer, Suspicious Partner, Guardian: the great and lonely god , Boys over flowers and loved them)

Fantasy stories, happy ending. I loved both Goblin and My Love from the Star.

My favorite TV series ANYWHERE EVER was 'My Mister' (My Ajusshi), now offered on Viki. It stars the rich guy from 'Parasite'.
Also, earlier, he starred in 'My Wife Is Having An Affair This Week' (also on Viki). Be prepared for some *emotional turmoil* on both, though.

Welcome to dramaland, Noelle! It’s an adventure!

I second the recommendations for My Love From Another Star (fantasy romance) and A Moment at Eighteen (slice-of-life school drama). Based on your preferences I will also add:

Master’s Sun - this was my first drama. Romantic comedy. It has ghosts, but they aren’t very scary.

I’m Not a Robot - not technically a fantasy, but it has a fantasy/fairy tale feel to it. What we call a healing drama.

Queen In Hyun’s Man - time travel romance, great male lead

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo - feel-good coming-of-age college drama

Kill Me, Heal Me - the male lead has dissociative identity disorder (7 different personalities). Journey of healing + romance.

Thirty But Seventeen - female lead has to adjust to life after being in a 13 year coma. An encouraging, feel-good show.
.
A few other favorites of mine:

Shut Up Flower Boy Band - journey of a high school rock band, deeper than the title makes it out to be

Signal - crime thriller. A team bands together, communicating across time to solve cold cases

Circle - Sci-Fi/dystopian, the story of twin brothers

Dream High - high school music drama

to.Jenny - cute 2 hr music drama

Just Between Lovers - melodrama, healing romance dealing with PTSD
.
.
Happy watching!

P.S. Healer is one of my very favorites. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

I am DONE with Kingdom on Netflix. I don't mind waiting a week for new episodes. I've learned to do this fairly patiently by watching current K-Dramas. But I waited for a 2nd half to Kingdom and all I got was another cliff hanger. I'm going to pretend that the bitten baby (no bloodline) king turned out to be a good guy and I'm DONE watching this show.
