Beanie level: Wrongly accused fugitive

What is the spreadsheet project?
A beanies collective work to synthesise the Popularity votes by having better classification for the dramas.
Which genres or environments are relevant?
Comment if you are interested in taking part. Calling all list-loving beanies and those who love to class and analyse to play with @kmromrell @claire2009 and me.

No worries — that’s where I am too, and I’m hypothetically one of the ones heading up the project. I think this will be a long, slow process that we accomplish with time rather than with a short burst of energy. Happy to have you involved in whatever part you want to play. 🙂

@darwi, @claire2009, @cozybooks Okay, finally circling back here, and I think I’m ready to start this project if you all are!

First, though, one idea I’ve been having: While we originally started this project to clean-up the genres on the Top 10 spreadsheet, I think it could be nice to assemble a general spreadsheet task force of sorts. This way, as additional projects come up (e.g., future tallies, data collection, miscellaneous projects), we have a group of people that we know are interested, and then we can check-in and see who wants to participate on each new project. First question — would you guys be interested in future spreadsheeting/data consolidating endeavors? And if so, do you think creating a task force would be a helpful way to approach that? If so, I can recruit in the next Open Thread. I’ve been meaning to toss out our Bean Count poll tally/analysis there and put out an announcement about the shared Google Drive project for a bit, so I can include that as well.

Second, as we’ve talked about before, we probably want to do our main communication/brainstorming outside of this site to make it easier. Before, we talked about using email. Is everyone still comfortable with that? If so, my email address is included in the top left hand corner of the Top 10 sheet (hover over the “If you see any errors” bit). Would you mind grabbing it from there and sending me an email? For some reason, that seems a bit more internet-safe than just having us all post our email addresses here. 😅

I’ll start a group email once our current group has replied so we all have each other’s info. At that point, we can start figuring out our approach to the genre consolidation/categorization.

Cozy, I know you said you might be limited in how much you do, so let me know if you want to sit out of any of this. Otherwise, I’ll plan on including you in any communication and letting you decide when you do/don’t join in. 🙂

As fate have it, I’m also work-travelling this week. But the next days are going to be the setting up of the group, so I shall be more available when we’ll work.

I’m not totally sure where we are going, but let’s go 🙂

@cozybooks, I just started the group email, but I can add you in if/whenever you’d like. Just let me know if you want to join the email conversation. 🙂

I’m back from my work-travel with a nasty cold.
Still I was able to read the notifications, and see that the spreadsheet project has grown one Beanie 🙂
And @kmromrelll and @claire2009 had the excellent idea to list more ressources.
I already have one to mention : the Beanie Level Glossary put together by @sicarius

Sorry, backing up a bit, I’m realizing I really need to ask permission from Beanies before I create shortcuts to their materials. @sicarius, do you mind if I include your Beanie Level Glossary in this shared folder? It won’t change the ownership of the document at all, and you can still update or change it whenever you’d like. All it does is use your share URL to put a shortcut into a shared folder. Beanies will be able to see your resource, but they won’t be able to change anything (including me). Let me know if that’s something you’re alright with!

(Also, @darwi, are you okay with me including your Drama Tracking Spreadsheet?)

    3
    2

You are right about asking! Sorry @sicarius that I missed this step.

Yes, my drama tracking template is for sharing.
I might add / modify it a little by adding “start watching date” and “end watching date” (but then I start to wonder if I can calculate a ratio between the number of days between these two dates and the duration of the drama, and indicate if it was binged/weekly watched/slow watched…)

      2
      1

I did this for kicks on my sheet a couple weeks ago! I ended up deleting the column (since it made me slightly embarrassed how quickly I fly through some dramas😅), but I like your idea of then giving them categorical names (binged, weekly watched, slow watched, etc.) to make meaning of the numbers. If you have both columns formatted as a date and subtract the earlier one from the later one, it will give you the number of days in-between without any fuss. 🙂

The nice thing about the shared folder is that it doesn’t freeze the documents at all — so if you change something on the document, everyone will have access to your changes.

        2
        0

      Not at all!
Share and Link away! It’s open link for a reason!

In terms of Beanie Resources I also keep a list of Inappropriate Words and how to deal with them and repost at least once a year with new ones found or updated, I’ll link that for you later because I think that would also be useful.

Okay, @attiton I’m going to expose myself by naming a few “beloved classics” drama that I plan to not watch (in order of the 2022 beanies popularity):

3
52

    My Ahjussi
    Misaeng
    Coffee Prince
    Goblin
    Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
    My love from the star
    W: Two Worlds
Be Melodramatic (Melo Is My Nature)
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim * (Dr. Romantic *)
and anything older than 2014 has lower probability, because of societal evolution (and technical access to video of sufficient quality).
It’s either the theme that do not interest me, or some actor(s) that I do not appreciate.

    4
    2

Wow. I wrote up like 1000 words of response and then lost it @darwi. Give me a bit and I’ll respond, but I have to get un-upset first 🙂

In the meantime, one of the things I’ll be asking for is the location of your “dataset” containing the list of the “beloved classics” in order of the 2022 Beanies Popularity. If there’s a way for me to see that too, I’d be more than happy to list all of my “I never plan watch these favorites” as well!!!

      1
      2
        2
        1

Happy to see this spreadsheet get some use!! I have to ask, though — why choose the 2022 favorites list rather than the 2023 list? There’s nothing wrong with that, but it feels like a strangely intentional choice. Makes me wonder your thoughts on the few newer faves — Call it Love, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Alchemy of Souls.

Also, in honor of the brilliance of this post idea, I’ll include my own list of classics that I won’t watch:
Be Melodramatic: Not for any malice — it just never felt that compelling, and there’s so many other dramas that do.
Kill Me, Heal Me: I’m scared of a 2015 k drama taking on mental health. I know it’s supposed to do it well, but I just don’t want to be burned.
Queen In-hyun’s Man: I tried on this one, and I didn’t get the thrill.
Six Flying Dragons: I’m just not much of a sageuk fan, and a 50-episode sageuk is far too intimidating.

          2
          1

I should have taken the overall cross-year popularity… Maybe I opened the spreadsheet on the 2022 tab, or maybe I feel that 2017-list would miss some dramas and 2023-list would not have more classics than 2022-list.

Regarding the newer faves… well they are not classics. They may become classics, and these three probably will, but at the moment they do not qualify. Since you ask, I’m flatted and cannot resist exposing my dramas-thoughts.
Alchemy is currently at the 5th place on my dramas ranking list. I’m totally besotted with Jang Uk, and even if I missed Mu Deok and her the witty snotty rantings, I drank all the fan service of the storytelling. For now, I’m setting the flaws aside. Later I will input in the notes the insidious misogyny of this classic coming of age story.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo has not charmed me as much as the general public. I do not personally know an autistic person, so I’m not qualified to judge the veracity of the portrayal. I find it certainly significantly romanced, it’s a drama not a documentary. The second roles are underdeveloped. The redemption of the “villain” colleague was uncalled for, and enforce a rose-coloured glasses view that I’m not sharing.
Call it love does not have a story that interest me. Or maybe it should interest me ? “Woman falls for man she wants to take revenge from” seems like an enemies-to-lovers, and I appreciate this pattern. But if he is unaware, they will not bicker… I cannot say precisely why “revenge” does not draw me in. What I can say with no ambiguity is that I am extremely weary of Lee Sung Kyung. She has a specialty of hysteric or immature characters. She was okay in Shooting stars, nonetheless the leads were not behaving like adults, and reviews says that she act in moderation in Call it love but nothing compels me in this drama.

I was not interested in Kill me, heal me at first. And the extracts that I saw (“Oppa!”) had more a nonplussed effect on me. I had only seen Park So Joon in What is wrong with secretary Kim and Fight for my way, and did not know the others. Then I watched The devil judge. Ji Sung fascinated and mesmerized me. The next drama I started was KMHM.
            I’m relatively neutral towards
Queen In-hyun’s Man, though I suspect that Yoo In Na would not capture my attention either. I dropped Touch your heart once the couple was formed, feeling the rest would only be some repetitions. Now that you made me think about it, the probability of this drama has decreased. I might see it, in ten years.
Six Flying Dragons intrigues me. The history. The cast. The good reviews. The number of episodes is also deterring. I like sageuks because they take me far from my reality, but when there is too much scheming by ministers in red it’s tedious.

            3

In fact there is much more in the spreadsheet : several rankings with the number of citations for each drama, several ways to calculate the popularity…

OK. Take two!!! My heavens it is frustrating to lose so much writing. It wasn’t even the site’s fault. It was my own stupid fault.

Anyway, I hope that you don’t feel too exposed @darwi. My curiosity definitely isn’t worth any discomfort. Also, trust you to have such a data-driven approach to this!!! I hold you in the highest regard for your attention to such matters. As I noted in my comment above, I will be more than happy to make a full listing of the classic shows that I, too, never plan to watch if there’s a place that I can see the dataset from which you drew your own list. Even if not, I’ll think of a few as I type this (again!!! Grrr) and add them to the end.

Here was what I was thinking: How about I simply respond to your list below and see how we compare? You can then do the same for my list (the short one I’ll put here or any longer one I can create from the whole dataset later).

Oh, right, I had also made one other promise in my original reply. I will not be trying to sway you to watch any of these.

      My Ahjussi
It took me almost a year (or a little more) to work up the courage to watch this drama. I could tell that I was likely to love it with a scary intensity, but that I would be emotionally decimated by watching. I was right on both accounts. I wrote a whole Fan Wall post about it last week, even.
      Misaeng
After Run On I thought I’d watch anything whatsoever with Im Si-wan in it, but then it turned out I never did. Summer Strike came and went…and given what @ceciliedk has been saying about Misaeng, I think it’s a big nope for me too.
      Coffee Prince
Nopey nope nopems. I’m with you on this one too. I’m a big Gong Yoo fan, so that’s not why 😉
      Goblin
Ah, well in this case, I’m a big Gong Yoo fan, so that’s totally why :). I love this drama. In truth—and I don’t readily admit this—it’s one of my top three. That said, I also would never recommend it to anyone IRL. I don’t know if that’s because I’m like a child who “wants to keep her precious things all to herself,” or because there are too many weirdnesses to this story that can be misconstrued, and I want the people I know who watch this to “construe” it MY WAY. Yeah, it’s a real divisive one. I even came to adore the ending. I’ll remember something about it weekly, probably.
      Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
I am with you on this one too. In fact, it takes quite a bit for me to watch a drama that centers on young people (this young, I mean) falling in love.
      My love from the star
Here’s my memory of the running commentary I offered to this one last time: “Hmm…don’t know this one by title, which probably means that every time someone mentions it I think, ‘huh I don’t know that one’ and then never look it up. So, I shall look it up now….oh hellz no, I’m not watching this one. I’m with you here for just the hairstyles alone—not going to put myself through that.”

      […]

      3
      5

        […]
        W: Two Worlds
I also didn’t know this one and googled it. I might watch it, but it’s on the borderline for being “too old” for me. It’s not that I think that dramas made prior to 2016-2017 are any better or worse (although you have a point about the older ones often not being so sensitive to “sensitive topics”), it’s that there are so many dramas that I want to watch that I need to have SOME limits—and a chronological one is as good as any other. It’s gonna have to be a pretty desperate day to watch it, though, I bet. I hope such a day does not come.
Be Melodramatic (Melo Is My Nature)
It took me quite a few episodes to get into this drama, but I eventually was very glad that I did. That said, there is one relationship in this series that was so devastating for me to watch that I actually have to actively UNREMEMBER it every time I think about Be Melo, or I’ll only remember that I hated it and sat in pain through some parts of the drama. So, yeah. I saw an image of the young man from the relationship in question the other day (a picture of the character, not just the actor) and I had to look away from the screen and, like, compose my emotions because I low-key started to panic for this fictional character. For those who’ve seen it, I’m talking about Choo Jae-Hoon played by Gong Myung.

Actually, there’s a scene in Be Melo where they make fun of ajummas who love Goblin to a sorry extreme. That’s me. I’m that sorry. And I’m really close to being that ajumma-y.
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim * (Dr. Romantic *)
I’m with you on this one too! I don’t enjoy medical anything, frankly. I liked Dr. Cha pretty much despite it being in a medical setting.

I’d say that we’re well above any expectation of random agreement—and that we totally share many opinions on which “classic dramas” we will not choose to watch.

        SEON-HA’S CURRENT CONTRIBUTIONS
So, in writing what I wrote about Romantic Dr, etc… I remembered a “classic” that I know I can add without your list: I never plan on watching Hospital Playlist *. Also, I had said Reply 1988 on the original post that started this conversation.

Here are few others that come to mind:
        * Boys over Flowers
        * Heirs [although that hardly counts as, yeah, it’s a classic, but everyone also says that it’s horrible]
        * Hotel de Luna
        * I think Signal may have also recently made it onto this list due to some spoilers…

Thanks, @darwi! This was fun to type up. Even if I had to do it twice for my sins.

        4
        2

I’m very sorry that you had to type twice, but very glad you did.

I do not plan to watch Hospital playlist. But this not a veto. I’m okay with hospital settings (I loved Doctor John) but I just do not care about the actors. And since kdrama actors are often very pretty, I take it as a requirement to have some appreciation. Kdrama have made me shallow 🤷. But the main reason is that I do NOT appreciate Jo Jung Suk. It is surely because he is good that I despised him in the two dramas where I saw him.

Regarding Me melo, I only have a feable idea of the plot. But I might have seen an extract with Jeon Yeo Been over-acting as in Vincenzo beginning… I have no memory of Han Ji Eun from Lovestruck in the city, so not a minus but not a bonus. I really do not like when there is one, or more, hysterical character. Korean must find it funny, seeing how often these sort-of-comical characters are present. But each of them is a negative point in my note.

I have zero intention to watch Boys over flowers or Heirs. No interest in the stories. And I might also just put a veto because of Lee Min Ho. That’s totally arbitrary. I have not seen him play, except in two ep of Personal taste that did not impress me. He is popular, so I do not like him (yes, he’s got a special treatment. I’m more neutral towards Kim Soo Hyun, and I have reasons to not like Lee Jong Suk). I will probably try Ask the stars/When the stars gossip because of Gong Hyo Jin, or I’ll wait for the verdict after it airs.

I have seen Hotel del Luna. It’s pretty. I’m okay with the case of the week structure (my friend doesn’t like it). I don’t remember much.
          Signal is on my watchlist.

          4

Actually, there’s a scene in Be Melo where they make fun of ajummas who love Goblin to a sorry extreme. That’s me. I’m that sorry.

Ok, this is tempting me, just to picture you. 😉

        OK! Drama list received. Amazing.

Here’s my own list of “classics” I truly never plan on watching, as extracted from this truly astounding spreadsheet.

This list doesn’t include the ones that I already agreed with you on above.

        * Reply 1988
        * Hospital Playlist of any stripe
        * Boys over Flowers
        * Heirs
        * Hotel del Luna
        * Signal
        * Twenty-five, Twenty-one
        * Extraordinary You
        * Mr. Sunshine
        * Chicago Typewriter (although I know you like this one @darwi–here’s an exception. Please feel free to sway me on this. I am worried that it ends poorly)

        4
        2

I think the only things I’d actually count as somewhat classics on this list are Reply 88 and BOF, and I don’t think anyone would fault you for missing the latter on purpose these days lmao.
Maybe me thinking the rest aren’t or can’t be classics ever or yet will spark convo itself tho… 🤭🤭

          3
          1

Yes, the definition of “classic” is difficult… that’s why I went with the 2022 popularity list. Maybe these drama are not classics but they are beloved.

            3
            0

I will not watch Twenty-five, Twenty-one nor Extraordinary You. As you said, the leads are too young.

I will watch Mr Sunshine someday, when the mood will align. I’m quite curious about this one, about the period. And there are a lot of comments about the beauty of the sets and costumes. Is it a bit like a republican cdrama ? This era seems interesting to me, partly because it’s totally different from my personal experience (not that Joseon era drama reflect my life).

I loved Chicago Typewriter. I have not been able to convince my friend to watch it, because it is not really a romance. It a friendship story. It’s a passion story. It is tragic. But it is beautiful. For me, the ending is good. Very heart-warming.
I did not know a important part of the plot, that I will not reveal. I went in knowing that two timelines were entangled. And they are beautifully visually linked.
I reckon that I am biased towards Im Soo Jung and Go Kyung Pyo.

          4

Idk whether to laugh or cry that You From The Stars/My Love From Another Star is no longer a recognisable drama by name alone 😅

        6
        0

Why not Coffee Prince? It’s very flawed, but it’s also very unique, I think?
I love how, as the season moves on, you get to know so many loves and relationships, and mostly what they have in common is that they are not what they seem at first sight. I would bear with the flaws for that, certainly.

        3
        4

Ha. This conversation isn’t about persuasion 🙂

          2
          1

I won’t watch Coffee Prince because I see those flaws coming from 10,000 miles away and literally don’t want to watch Gong Yoo act them out. I know the plot pretty well—how can’t I?—and have seen many of the salient scenes, so it’s also slightly a misnomer to say “I’ve not watched it at all.” I’ve seen maybe 15 minutes total of it in clips.

          4
          0

Since I have already cited quite a few names, I’ll go on… I do not like Gong Yoo. It’s totally unjust, as I have not seen him play. But he is totally unattractive for me.
Old flawed drama… why would I watch it ? I have no interest in the plot, no interest in the leads (okay, I see that there is Lee Sun Kyun…) so why would I ? for the sociological experimentation ? To be honest, I fear that there would be too many eye-rolls for me.

          5
          0

(it’s okay to be intense. We are here because we are intense in our kdrama love)

Maybe I should write a few words on the dramas pages of the dramas that I like to persuade others to watch them…

          6
          2

Don’t worry, I was joking I’m okay with expressing my views. There is way more dramas that I will not watch, but I only listed those present in the first 60 in the linked spreadsheet.
You might try to sway me, but I’m quite stubborn 😉 (my friend is a bit sour that I refuse to watch King the land despite liking Junho and all her efforts)

        4
        1

No, I think it’d be bothersome if this interaction was about persuasion rather than just listening and responding. Except on Chicago Typewriter. I am potentially interested in being swayed to watch that one.

Also, I feel sort of obligated to refer you to a pretty long write up I did on how to post longer things to the Fan Wall. I can tell you don’t really want to hear it, but since I’ve become sort of known for this—@reply1988 you can keep sending people my way!!!—I feel like I must.

I may end up putting this one up as a free-standing Fan Wall post in the coming month because folks do keep asking and it’s annoying to have it in an Open Thread, especially when the site is loading slowly.

Thanks a lot ! So that’s the CRTL+C CTRL+V that go me… I’m so used to it that I cannot imagine another way to paste the data… I’ll have to remember that it is not sufficient to write in textpad, but that I have to paste manually on the fan wall.

You and @attiton are having an interesting convo all by yourself. This will make a good OT or WWW post (Controversial or not)

      3
      2

What do you have in mind regarding a way to proceed ?
Shall we propose a drama chat topic “beloved classic that I will not watch” ? Or rewrite the discussion as an article, at the risk on focussing mostly on the dramas that we cite ?
Would you share the classics that you won’t watch ?
        … but what is a classic @sicarius @kmromrellomrell @attiton @ceciliedk @reply1988 ?

        2
        3

I like the idea of an article on the classic drama and what makes a classic for you and therefore why X,Y, and Z are not on your classic list despite their popularity. This would lead to an interesting discussion in the comments section as other beanies could list their criteria for attaching the classic label and their list of top 5 or 10 they would class as classics and those they would not.

We already had a post on dramas everyone else loved and we didn’t and vice versa so I think this would be good way to expand on the discussion and will definitely be popular. Maybe I should say could be popular? I am surprised the screen writer post was not that busy in the end so maybe I am not that good at calling which will ‘go viral’ after all🤣

          2
          6

@darwi I think you should feel free to proceed however you like! I’m not likely to be more forthcoming about dramas I won’t watch and the reasons I won’t watch them out-of-hand on a main thread—but I bet many other people would be! I’m sure our generous overlords would take this suggestion very seriously.

@attiton I do not plan to tell more than what’s already here.
But I realize that maybe what you just said is not that you won’t say more (as in developping reasons or giving other dramas titles) but that you are less likely to give such a list in a more publicly exposed thread. If that is the latter, the idea to propose an article “Seon-ha and Darwi discuss beloved classics that that they will not watch” is out of the way…

            1
            0

@darwi Yes, it’s the latter (not feeling comfortable in a more publicly exposed thread) for me. But that doesn’t mean–as I thought you were suggesting–that you shouldn’t propose this theme to the DB moderators for a Drama Chat idea! You could just recapitulate what you said here there and get more feedback, if that’s your thing!!

Did I misunderstand the suggestion? Were you thinking we’d do a guest piece like when they post “Thriving and Surviving in Dramaland” guest posts from commenter Beanies? Huh.

            2
            0

@darwi and @attiton I was originally thinking a guest post but if neither of you are comfortable doing that then we can suggest a drama chat by emailing Miss Victrix. I was assuming it was too close to the similar theme I mentioned above but they do repeat popular themes like the top 10. Also last time they didn’t have each weecap writer give their reasons for not watching a ‘classic’ so it would be interesting to read that and then have the DB community add to the discussion in the comments section.

@reply1988 and @darwi I think I just misunderstood what was being asked. I think @emsel was suggesting something simpler like starting a conversation with a post to Open Thread, and so I was running with the notion that we’d just open up this same conversation to everyone.

@darwi Were you really suggesting a full guest post?

            3
            0

            @attiton I’m glad I asked for precision.
There were two proposals: 1) A drama chat topic 2) A guest post in duo. (And an additional one, possibly drama chat topic, “what is a classic”.)
Proposing the drama chat topic, and commenting on it is not an issue for me.
A duo guest post with you will not happen, and I totally understand.
A solo guest post from my part on the above discussed topic seems presumptuous. Who am I to expose my dislikes or rebuttal of beloved classics ? Also, it seems a bit negative and I believe we all prefer to steer Dramabeans’s discussions toward more welcoming and positive topics. Maybe this could be transformed into “classics that I love” or “dramas that I’m loving alone” (two different lists of dramas, away from those discussed here)… These topics would be topics already explored, as mentioned by @reply1988 , but I believe the aim of “underrated gems” articles is to put more light on them so repetition is part of the process…

In my view, “beloved dramas that I did not love” is different from “beloved dramas that I will not watch”. For the former, some drama viewing occurred. Was it complete or was it a drop, no importance. But for the latter, the point is the refusal to watch. Maybe if I were to watch My Adjussi I would appreciate the drama. However, I’m not giving it a chance.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

As @attiton pointed out I wanted an opening in OT or WWW, so people can join in with their opinions, but I realized there can still be beanies who hesitate to comment their views fearing opposing views and in the end the convo in OT/WWW would more or less become a chat with few beanies. In this case, an official DB chat would give them a valid space to bring forth their thoughts and reasons.

I liked the idea behind “Beloved classic that I will not watch” because most naysayers would refrain from commenting in a show’s recap once they gauge the reaction of the audience to be majorly positive. This is also applicable for minority people who continue to like a show despite the negative feedback.

“Persuade me to watch a drama” is a great idea that no one has come up with before. This will certainly give a different insight into a show that may have been pushed out unfairly and end up being underrated.

Thank you in advance @darwi if you are mailing DB about these topics.

P.S: Guest posts are knowledgeable and fun to read, but the general crowd, mostly out of courtesy would not challenge the author and will keep it light.

Thank you for giving your reasoning.

If I understand well, I’m tasked with emailing the staff with the idea of a drama-chat “beloved classics that I will not watch” and the idea of a post-serie “Persuade me to watch a drama”.
I can illustrate with @attiton reticence about Chicago typewriter, and the arguments I proposed. Or I could find a drama I’m hesitating on… not easy… I tend to already have quite a notion of how soon I want to see one of the 1130 dramas in “next dramas” list. And the “classics” are mostly out of the “50-75 maybe” range. Ah. Found one. “I hear your voice” is rather low on my list, but 21 on “overall popularity”.
Now, organise the thoughts in an email…

I consider classics to be decade or more old dramas that are well received by the public.

As far as the classics that I will never watch is 0 because I always try at least 1 episode of every show, unless the genre is horror. I can tweak it to classic Kdramas that I dropped. To name a few I remember immediately:

          1. Lovers in Paris
          2. My lovely sam soon
          3. Secret Garden
          4. Moon embracing the Sun
          5. Arang and the magistrate

          1
          2

I think I see some takers on today’s “Beanie Recs” who’d offer you reasons why you should take up Arang and the Magistrate🤔

You interested in “being convinced” @emsel?? 🙂

I’ve discovered dramas 2,5 years ago. So 10 years make sense, but seem a bit too long/too restrictive to me. And tbh dramas anterior to 2013 look more like oldies to my eyes.

I’d say that I consider “classic” a drama whose name everybody knows. However, this is impossible to check… and My love from the star failed this test.

Can we take the 50 highest ranked by “overall cross-year popularity” with a diffusion date anterior to 2020 ? (see the link to the file in previous comments)

That’s nice of you to watch at least 1ep. How do previews and extracts fits ? I know scenes from dramas that I have not seen… Or should I consider that I have seen part of the drama ? If I am able to recognise the reference to Goblin in Cafe Minamdang, should I consider this dramas “seen” ? If I have better recollection of the Apple store scene in Goblin than any scene in One spring night that I’m dropping after 10 days hiatus, how does it count ?

Regarding the dramas that you named :
Secret garden and iconic Hyun Bin in sequins tracksuit. With old fashion machismo, and old-fashioned meek FL. I laughed a lot during the first 4 eps. Much less when he comes back to his body. There are some good ideas. This drama is now old and has several evidences.
Arang and the magistrate is a drama that I just finished. After one week of interruption, I almost didn’t follow up. I like Lee Joon Gi and Shin Min Ah. The story is not going to stay with me.
Lovers in Paris. A romance from 2004, reasons why I had no knowledge of this drama. Are they really in Paris ? It might be a reason to watch, to grumble that the geography is wrong…
My lovely Sam Soon is much higher (31e) in overall popularity. Romance from 2005, low (in the “will probably never watch”) on my list.
Moon embracing the Sun has the same overall popularity as BOF, and is in “maybe someday” on my list.

@attiton Yes, I saw that the first suggestion was to mention this in Open Thread or What we are watching, as a way to open the discussion while still having it relatively burried (particularly for the Open Thread). That’s why I proposed to make it an explicit topic. 😅

By the way, the discussion here is not restricted. Yet only @kmromrell offered some dramas titles. How come ? (ok, I was asked on another Beanie fanpage and I took it on mine so as not to pollute the page, so this might play)

Maybe there is another possibility, of topics and articles : “persuade me to watch a drama”.
This could be interesting because several beanies would provide arguments for a drama that they appreciate. And this would supplement the drama-page. (see how I anwser to your and @cayong03 request ?)

        3

Oooh, now that one would be amazing: “Persuade Me to Watch a Drama.”

I’m 10,000% behind that. I’d be happy to seed that with a more fleshed-out version of why I am reticent to see Chicago Typewriter for example…and your response, posted to the actual review page could be also re-used?

As for the Fan Wall, I’ve noticed that folks are often reticent to jump into long conversations between other Beanies—I don’t know why, but I take it as a form of politeness, frankly, of not wanting to “butt in.” I’m sure there are lots of other reasons for it, though. 🙂

          3
          2

😊 I’m happy that you like the “persuade me to watch a drama” proposal.
Now, how do we proceed ?
Would it be a drama-chat or a post theme with some saying “I hesitate to watch this drama because… persuade me” ? Or @attiton or I send an email proposal and see what Dramabeans team think of it ?

            2
            0

@darwi Well, I guess I’d send the idea to the DB Team and see if they want to pick it up as an “official” Drama Chat, and if so, find out if they just want to run it themselves and we simply participate as “regular users” or if they’d like us to write up a sample interaction for the main post!

And, if they’d rather us do this on Open Thread or whatever, they could then tell us that at that time.

I do not need to be involved in the email writing process…I think that would not only slow things down but I would make things worse 🙂 This is exciting!

I love your idea of Persuade me to watch a drama and can see Beanies queuing up to sell their chosen drama.

          0

@darwi I feel inadequate to answer since I don’t have that many list of dramas that I’ve watched fully. On one hand I drop countless dramas like hot potato, on the other hand too many dramas just aren’t that memorable. I’m afraid I’d end up looking like bad-mouthing most dramas. But I totally on board with ‘ Persuade me to watch a drama’ since once I like something, I do it fiercely. Send it away!😊

It’s also your idea ! 😊 I’m happy that the good conversation on this page became another good larger conversation.

I also proposed “persuade me to watch a drama” and missvictrix answered:

We are all on the same wavelength — we’ve had something in the works that’s quite similar to your “persuade me” idea. I’ll take your ideas into account as we’re working out the final details.

So we’ll see how it goes.

@reply1988 here is a link to a drama list template. Please try and comment.

To demonstrate how the formula and styling work, I did not erase all data.
Since the work of putting the names was done, the actors names are all here.
And you have my full list of tropes 🙂

Tell me how it can be modified to better suits your needs (such as adding more users for ranking the next dramas for the watchclub?) or take it and do the modifications by yourself.

Oh excellent 🥰 thank you so much. I will set it up on my computer tomorrow and see what works for the club. I co facilitate the club with @mellowarmadillo so if we keep the original up to date with the monthly watches between us it should work for our purposes. We have set questions that shape the discussion so we could turn those into headings. I will definitely give feedback.

I’ve not had success in “a-tag” linking any links on this site besides YouTube and internal DB links, @darwi. That link above got stripped by the editor, i do believe.

You can paste the link inline, though, and it should work.

Thank you for resending this. I have opened it in view only ok. It looked fine and operational so now waiting to see if I can download and type into it. Depending on how long that process takes I will send the feedback in a few mins or later today. My computer just woke up so it is very slow. I am looking forward to the Apple event in Sept when I will see if they upgrade the chip before I get my next iMac and then I can rejoice as these slow starts will be a dim and distant memory.

You really need something multi- like this to talk about these things.
I have made a bingo card cooperating with @reply1988 and @attiton, but it started out more like a fin drinking game-ish thing (with or without drinks), for newcomers to be introduced to the tropes and oldcomers to enjoy recognizing them … again, but it really makes one discuss the variation so you end up looking for some kind of cross-referencing there, too.

        2
        5

Please do let @darwi know if you use it. We are going to trial it to track our monthly dramas at the Watch and Discuss Korean Drama club. The more people use it the better, it’s such a great resource to be generously shared so we can do the easy part of personalising such a detailed template.

          2

I love the idea of bingo cards !
My trope list is a kind of bingo.

Tell me if you have ideas/needs that could be implemented in the file.

          2
          2

This is the Bingo Card, still with one slot free for that very special trope, when I decide which one.
This one is just for viewing or copying.
I don’t adhere very strictly to terms, I write extra stuff and cross out things, but the main idea are tropes common in Kdrama and not common in, say, Hollywood. And that are fun to notice. So like, if someone runs to the airport to confess their love, it does not belong here, but if they fall in love at a bus stop or are beaten up by their parents, it does.

I would use your template, but I must admit I have never learned to use spreadsheets, so I … gave up. I stick to my bingo cards, footnotes and lists. I have felt bad about it because it could look as if I was only paying you lip service when I said I liked it.
But really, my brain is just too oatmeal-ish to use your template.

            2
            0

I laughed a lot with the bingo card !
Unsurprisingly we have numerous tropes in commun, though the formulation is different.
I am also puzzled by the apparent lack of pijamas in Korea. And it is not only for convenience/rapidity of the scene as when Lee Rang enters the room and goes to bed immediately since Moon Seo Ha and his secretary-friend had the time to prepare their bedroom (and change into bed-pullovers?).
I do not notice the interrupted kisses in kdrama as the scene are way more exagerated in cdramas. Or maybe I’m watching less k-romances.

          What is “verbal innuendo” ?

          1
          2

Pajamas: Even if it happens more frequently than normal, I don’t count the times people sleep wearing their shirts and trousers, because they’re either drunk or have to sleep with someone they so not feel they can dress down with. But even in those situations you would normally take off your sweater, right? And certainly your coat! But in K-dramas you often see people go to sleep with a big knitted sweater, even if they have a blanket, and last time I saw it, it was to male friend, het for all I know, with each their big sweater, going nightie-night. And I have seen people slepp with their coat on, too … I think one of the times was in Strong Girl Bong… what’shername. Her elegantly dressed boss slept wearing his fancy coat.
There’s almost always interrupted kisses in K-dramas. And they never go back to kissing, even if it they are still alone. Like, in “It’s Okay Not to Be Okay”, they are one time interrupted by a dear saying it’s loud sound in the forest, and ML Gang-Tae (Kim Soo-hyun) says something like “Damned dear!” Mostly, it will take some episodes before they get the chance again.
Verbal innuendo was introduced by @attiton, who gave the example of someone asking someone to get “Ramyeon”, while meaning something like “Netflix and Chill” (which, if someone hadn’t enlightened me, I would take totally literally, too). Or someone saying something innocent, and another person understanding it as a metaphor for something.
Actually, I have started just writing “innuendo”, because I see many visual innuendos. I can post an example or two in a minute here. But really obvious is “Live up to your name”, when he sharpens his needles … if you haven’t seen it, I believe it happens first time in the very first scene, so you could watch the first ten minutes and get a prime example.

“Do you want to get ramyon” is explained in a few dramas, so I got the traduction quite early. Recently, Sooyoung asked while lasciviously lying on the hood of the car in Tell me your wish. I believe I have not seen a positive answer to this question (though sometimes they do eat ramyon).

Innuendo are also quite present in western shows. I might be too naive because I cannot find example of innocent talk that is taken for something with other intentions.

          1
          4

Yes, innuendo is really all over the place … I think maybe I notice it more – and maybe they are used more, too? … in shows, where people sleep together with their coats on and don’t kiss untill they are more or less engaged.
Like, if you look back at Hollywood in the fifties, a man dancing in the rain while swinging a closed umbrella in front of him … you know, that’s the best way to use an umbrella.

I can’t quite remember an example of the last thing, but you know, someone saying “I need to put it in, but I can’t find the button that opens it” … and someone reacting to that in a way that shows they are either misunderstanding it or just have associations that they don’t say aloud.

Oh, I’ve seen it accepted at least twice, but probably more: Run On by the OTP and Sh**ting Stars by our youngest pairing!

My original square was only for the “rameyon” line, but was/am happy to have it more generalized to being about innuendo in general. There’s that funny interaction about “doing it,” in True to Love/Bora, for example.

            2
            0

          That’s ok.
The template is a bit obsessive. I totally understand that other people do not have the same urge as me to count everything.
The bingo card is nice. Thanks for sharing.

          1
          3

I totally understand the urge to counting. It’s not the same, but if you look at my latest couple of bingo cards, they are surely flowing over the edges.
And @attiton comma I think I have seen the “doing it” thing in several dramas, in variations of “I don’t like to see you doing it with him” to “let’s do it” referring of course to peeling potatoes or doing hopscotch or taking the stairs. Often followed by a nervous/hopeful/overwhelmed “do what?” before it is clarified.

It’s a list of what I’ve watched, with little stars by the one I neglected to finish. I have written a few words about each one. Partly because I simply forget which one was which if I don’t, and partly in the vain hope of making someone I know watch some of them, too.

(and I was quite frustated by the 200 characters limit that was reached so fast that I was not able to finish my sentence. How do you manage to write articles on your fanwall ? is there key to unloking more writing space ?)

Yes you write it offline in Word / notes etc. and then cut and paste it onto the fanwall. I try to do this with my comments to avoid the issues if they are too long or the site is not working and I get timed out and lose the comment despite the refresh.

what this is about if anyone can guide me ?

Well, the other day there was a discussion on dramas-list that we use to follow which dramas we watch. I mentioned the file that I’m using, which is an multi sheets file with
1)dramas that I’m watching (with a list of tropes that I count just because)
      2)dramas I might watch
      3)personal rating of seen dramas
4)personal rating of actors and actresses.

As some interest in my dramas-list-template was expressed, I have made a template available. (with a few data as examples)

It count how many times I have watched an actor/actress, and there are some formula to calculate a note that is put back in the “Dramas watched” tab (even when the columns and lines are moving because dramas are added and tropes are reorganised).

The first tab can be sufficient (and possibly already overly detailed) for following up one’s dramas watch.
I played with excel/google.sheet and if others see an interest… the file is available.

I am loving this these are my queries so far. The notes have helped a lot.

    Tech support😊:
On the actors and actresses pages if I delete the notes tabs D & E and in the Dramas seen lines 3&4 Person D and B watch will that mess up a lot of the formulas?

    In notes tab
in column J it has actors play what does this mean they literally play like arcades or sing nursery rhymes or play an instrument?
Column R situation not ok is that when they are racist or offensive in another way?
Column S is that you eye rolling because scene is too ridiculous?
Column AE what is the difference between that and strong female is it like Ajumma in Healer or not usual figure or pretty face?
Column AH like She was pretty calling each other husband and wife?
Column AJ is that toilet humour

    In dramas seen tab
Column A lines 41 and 42 3e female and 3 e male I could not work out what this was.

    2

      > On the actors and actresses pages if I delete the colums D & E
-> then there will be no different colour to indicate who are the preferred persons. No consequence on the formula.

      > Dramas seen lines 3&4
-> these are just individual drama count. It will mess up the formula in line 33 (giving the note). But I guess that you do not need it. So you can delete all 3,4,5,6, 33 and 34 lines.

      >Dramas seen lines 41&42
These are just possibilities to have a 3rd actress and 3rd actor mentioned for the drama.
In examples, this allows to have Jo Han Chul name for Healer. We wanted to have more than just the lead couple counted.
These lines are used in the formula to get the drama name for the actress/actor in respective tabs. But there is a priority on lead role and most recent/more left in the table. Example : I added Love in contract. Go Kyung Pyo is male lead, so this is this title that appears on the “actor” tab because is 2nd in the other drama. Love in contract is also the title for Park Min Young, because this drama is left in the table (so added later, watched more recently) than Healer.
I don’t know if these features interest you… These were really to answer the questions which actor have I seen ? in which drama ? Am I watching more the actors that I prefer ?.
I let all the names in the file because the work of imputing the data has been done, but it’s superfluous.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate seeing all the actors and adding their names in Hangul was a nice touch 😊. This means I should be able to see the range of their dramas without having to keep going into the different Asian wiki pages for each actor I like in the most recent of their dramas.

      The note tab…
So that is my formula to obtain a note for a drama. This is set of personal criteria, that maybe I should have kept personal…
I’m sure that you have other personal criteria to give a note. Just add/replace the columns as needed.

But since I disclosed my noting system here are the details
      – column J : sorry for the bad translation into english. It’s global quality of acting. Is the cast good ?
      – column R: any situation that is NOT OK. Racism, violence… anything that I would prefer not to see.
      – column S: yes, anything that made me roll my eyes because this is really too much or it overcome my suspension of disbelief.
      – column AE: this is taken from “dramas seens” tab. I have a line for “strong female” and a line for “FL is non conventional” because there is a slight difference. Non-conventional is more like “not the usual FL”, she as something that set her apart.
      – column AH: sorority or femance. I’m feminist so if there sorority in the drama, that’s a bonus for the note.
      – column AJ: annoying comic relief. I might have become more tolerant or more used to the comic relief roles, but at the beginning they annoyed me a lot. It is more a role/character that is doing too much (Hwang Bo Ra in WWWWSK) and whose role is just to be ridicule so as to reduce some tension/create cheap laughs (the neighbours detectives of Zombie detective).

In fact, all the criteria on the note tab could be in the Dramas seen tab, and the note could be given with a simple formula.
My notes are on a specific tab because we are two persons, with each specific criteria. So having a tab is easier than scrolling to a dedicated range in the first tab. (and allowed me to play with the index.match formula)

I should simplify the file before proposing it to the others beanies.
Is there an interest to the actor&actress tabs ?
Shall I replace the list of tropes by a invitation to imput personal notation criteria ?

I have similar things that stand out for me too so loved the list of tropes. I think if you are putting it out for general use you may want to just have a couple of generic examples so people can get the idea and chose their own.

I think the actors and actresses tab is invaluable and is a keeper well done for putting in the work on that one. I like the idea of including others as the ‘always second lead or best friends’ would flash up so you would celebrate when they finally got their lead role. I expect some beanies would have a PD and writer tab so Hospital playlist and the Reply series would be easy to identify as must watches if you liked the writer PD combo in one of them.

I agree as two of you are using yours there needed to be differentiators especially loving the way it helps you decide what will be an appropriate joint watch and what to watch separately. I think this is great for those who have drama buddies/family members they watch with. As our watch and discuss club is made up of so many people I don’t think we could utilise that feature hence removing it but I am keeping your template as is because I think it may help us to choose future watches as we have some diverse thoughts and had some dramas that a few of us didn’t like and didn’t finish so there may be a way for me to utilise the feature to track those but I am not at that stage yet. I am not good with excel.

Most people would be using it for their own records. I get the impression that a lot of beanies use mydramalist and this spreadsheet is something that is offline, and can be personalised and is a lot of fun to engage with.

I’m happy that you like the file. 😊

Yes, writer and PD could be added, and counted. It’s not a lot of work to create the tab.

          > some dramas that a few of us didn’t like and didn’t finish so there may be a way for me to utilise the feature to track those
What about having one column per person in the “next drama” tab ? If each person indicates the dramas that they [do not like / did not finish / loved / is excited for] it might help.

          1
          1

So… as there can be 2 writers and 2 PD the formula are not so straighforward.
But the tabs have been added.
I’ll add several comments to explain how to do it. (mosty inserting the lines and naming them for easy use in the formula for counting and displaying the drama name)

I love to play with excel so I’ve added a few columns in the “next dramas” tab with data validation (ie drop down lists) so that several person can express their love or disinterest in the dramas. These are columns G H and I. If you insert a new column in-between the data validation roll-over.
It’s quite black-or-white, but you can add more choices by modifying in Data > Data validation.

Thank you so much for adding those additions, I am so impressed with this. I have downloaded the updated spreadsheet and will add the club info to this one. I am so glad I was interrupted by work so didn’t get a chance to go all in on the previous version.

          Hi
I realised that there is a flaw in the drop down menu.
I will make a how-to this evening so that you will be able to make the adjustments.

          0

In the template file, there is a new tab “workbookadmin” with how-to instructions to fix the drop-down list in the “next drams” tab. I hope it’s okay.
          Sorry for the mishap.

Is this a late entry to the sleeve rolling up post? Is this Devilish joy? If so I started this ages ago and stopped with the family feuding and taking advantage of a man with memory loss. I do think I should just fast forward those bits and watch the rest as I want to see how the actress gets her reputation back and the real culprits get caught.

Yes and yes. I honestly don’t remember much of the family as only the cute couple caught my interest.
Fun, cute and mostly nice drama (ff the producer also).

So you found one scene for the post about it!

We were more inspired about male forearms…

😊 Yes… but not after having proposed a “she rolls his sleeve” scene first, as I too misread the prompt. I mean, we all did this honnest mistake… who’s looking more at the FL than the ML ?

Actually I had one that came to mind pretty fast but not in Kdrama.
