[Theme of the Month] K-dramas and community

Dramas are gifts that keep on giving. There’s the obvious aspect: countless hours of joy and entertainment that come from watching. The less obvious gift comes in the form of connections and friendships that can bloom from a shared love (or hate) of a drama.

Offline, watching with my family has been a great bonding activity (you’re never too young or old to enjoy a drama). Online, I’ve made incredible friends from all over the world, and though we may have different tastes, we’re united by our love and passion for dramas. So:

Tell us about your drama community (or communities). What kind of connections have you developed due to dramas?

To submit:

  • Email your submissions to hello@dramabeans.com. If you have a registered Dramabeans account, include your handle so we can link to it.
  • Include at least 1 image, though more is preferred.
  • Suggested length: Between 500 and 1,000 words.
  • Deadline: We will post these on a rolling basis, so we’re taking submissions now. We will cut off accepting submissions on June 25. If you miss this month, join us for a new theme next month!

Beanies are the best! That's all I have to say really.
Here ends my post.

Actually - I do have something more to say lol. (that probably surprised nobody)

The reasons why Beanies are the best, is the ability to turn something heart-breaking into something hilariously funny. I've bookmarked the fanwall post from the group hug to commemorate the moment that our ship sank in that drama that shan't be named, and whenever I feel a bit grumpy I look at it and it always makes me feel better. Thank you my fellow-shipmates!

Another reason why Beanies are the best? Even though I was the instigator of the whole incident that shan't be named who also happened to board the other ship that shan't be mentioned, Cloggie is still willing to talk to me despite all of it.

I did tell someone that I bought a musical instrument after a chat with one of my online friends. When they asked me if I thought this particular online friend was reliable, I had to admit that they did make me watch a terrible drama. But that this didn't make them a bad person.

😂😂😂 Why do I feel that some people might make the same argument about serial murderers?

Your online friend who happens to be a RL musician is so gonna put on her resume that she convinced her online friend to buy a musical instrument with the heading "International Music Advocacy."

10

My online friend should definitely put that on their resume! Especially as I'm very happy with the musical instrument

5

@kimbapnoona you should also add International Popular Media Mediary: Provides written and spoken translations from Mandarin to English, as well as clarifying and/or explaining cultural norms and customs. Appropriately uses advanced squeeing and giggling to convey emotional content of media.

12

@egads, thank you for making me feel so undeservingly accomplished this Sunday morning. 🤣

I think I might keep my mad skillz of "advanced squeeing and giggling" known only within the bounds of this community. Same with "oppa ogling" 😅

Even as a part-time lurker, I've managed to participate in temporary communities revolving around particular shows, and the information and insights that fellow viewers provide really do greatly enhance the viewing experience. This is especially true of the more divisive shows and the reasons given for liking or disliking them. It's interesting to see what people look for in their dramas, what preconceptions they bring, and how the show might or might not change their minds.

Lifelong, i've always watched (mostly) English tv shows by myself, meaning, i don't really discuss the various likes and dislikes about them with anyone and/or try to know more about the cast or the show itself either on the internet or via general chit chat with people (GOT is the only exception). However, with K-Dramas, this is the first that i've sought online information about the dramas, its actors and reading other people's reviews and posts via youtube and similar websites, than just watching these shows myself. And it's been quite good so far. While, i've been a beanie for just few days, i look forward to reading the recaps and the posts here, and maybe in time, i too will become more engaged in the community and further these meaningful interactions. Offline, I'm still not participatory but who knows that may change in the near future:-) Thank you!

My only one: dramabeans!
Where I live right now looks so anti-dramas 😂😂😂😂😂
But I thank you, guys, for saving me!!!!

On the other hand, some dramas can give me a community within themselves, that even though it is fiction, it supplies me values, struggles, humor and compassion that is not easy to find in real life.
So, even though it is for a short period of time every time, it is worth for me, every time when it is done right.

The problem with this theme is there is too much to write about. Do you write about the overall awesome community of Beans? Do you write about the madness awesomeness of the A Poem a Day days with the ships, the island, and everyone's concern for a small alligator? How about the rabbit community and the way group watches have allowed Beanies to share their love/hate/snark with other likeminded or reluctant Beans? (Shout out to the ISWAK gang, and one cannot leave out @kimbapnoona's amazing real time translations of Meteor Garden and Put Your Head on My Shoulder. Simply amazing to witness.) Or do you write about how you now have friends from all over the world? Though I'm still not convinced Australia is real. There's been poetry, music parties, gif stories (who can forget the epic adventure of the Errand Boys), the Love, February prompt, and so much more. Well, this got a bit mushy for my taste, so I'll let you dumblings figure out what to write, and I'll sit back and read.

I won't know where to start or where to end so here is a compressed version: common interests with beanies led to lots of conversation, somehow it shifted to kpop & the convo place shifted to other platforms where beans could live chat. The community slowly grew & is now scattered in various forms & sizes (according to the topic of interest: music, drama, movie, food, sports, OPPAs 😉) across multiple social media platforms. And all of this has led to many happy beanie meet ups too & so much more.

Basically (HUGE)thanks to DB for making this all happen
You & the beans are the best!!!! 😎

This might be a little bit sacrilege to the name of Dramabeans (sowwy), but the Dramafever community was my community for a good while. I was intensely involved in and devoted to the King of Savvy recaps that were done here (such a fun time), but I've mostly been a long-time, occasional, lurker on Dramabeans. I was pretty involved with Dramafever though, involved to the point of being a volunteer for them, first taking part in their video dramaclub that they uploaded to YouTube (and have no way of getting copies of those videos) and then later in written dramaclubs for the website. (Thank goodness there's a site that was basically just copy-pastaing every recap and article, etc. from Dramafever to their site, so we were able to go in and download copies for ourselves.)

Let me tell you, we were GUTTED at the demise of Dramafever. That place was bloody special to us. And then AT&T comes in and is like 'Do you love this thing? We'Re hERe To kIlL THe thINgS yOu LOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE!!!!!!!'

I've never submitted anything for Dramabeans before, but I kind of want to write about Dramafever and what it meant to a lot of people.

I dont think its sacrilege! I was never a part of the df community but dang if I dont miss the ease of that website each and every time I go to watch a drama. I can only imagine how bereft y'all felt. We were all feeling some kind of way when db wasn't as prolific with the recaps and extras and things and we still had our fanwall and beanieland. I cant imagine what it would be like for the whole thing to just be....gone. Oh, hugs to you and all of the df community.

It was definitely the easiest to navigate while it was still around. (Although Kocowa's site is pretty simple and straight-forward as well.) Viki just has such an awful, clunky layout. I honestly hate using it. And the non-legal sites aren't just ugly to look at, there's a real risk of getting some sort of virus on your computer, lol.

What was the worst part of Dramafever shutting down (apart from having to scramble about looking for saved copies of the dramaclubs we were in and copies of articles we'd written) is that even the employees (except I'm guessing the tech people, as I believe they were all kept on and integrated into Warner Bros.) had no idea it was going to happen. They just walked into work that Monday, sat down at their desks, and were told it was their last day. Such a shameful, disrespectful way to treat your employees. Especially those who had been there for awhile. It was just terrible all around.

Dramabeans ❤️ I still can remember how this blog gave me my very first favourite Korean drama ever - Dal Ja’s spring. It was the drama I saw that made me want to read more about. Javabeans publishing recaps of every episode as we waited for fansubbing sites to release softsubs. And The rest was history.

Though I’ve participated in many other drama social platforms, (I simply love to talk about dramas I love with everyone else), dramabeans is now my favourite online hang out place. Though I’ve visited this site for several years as a lurker, I’m fairly new to interacting with beanies and leaving comments/posting walls. But this space immediately felt home to me once I started being active. And it’s all thanks to all welcoming beanies and awesome recap minions! I do miss javabeans and girlfriday, but I love that you’re all still here keeping this blog alive and making it so homey for everyone especially to newbies like me. Love you all! 🤗
