Hi beanies. I started Oh My General just so that I could watch something which I could fast forward through without feeling guilty. Also listening to Indian rappers Divine and Naezy who are absolutely phenomenal. First week back at school was hard. Also Shin Sung Rok is bae, lets get this straight. Also beanies my close friend studies much more than me because she wants to clear NEET and I just feel guilty because she has to study much more than me. Is that stupid?

No. The transition phase between entrance exams and getting admission in the college of your choice are the most stressful times of our life, I believe. And we cannot always wrap our mind around it and tackle in a way we would like. It's okay to all sorts of conflicting feelings but always make sure to remember that it's a phase and like all phases this too shall pass.

Happy Friday beanies!
I'm dropping by to say hello :) My first full week as a full-time-employee is almost over and most of the days I was even too tired to watch a drama after work. In 2 hours my lazy weekend starts and I guess I will use most of the time to catch up on missed dramas and EXO variety content... Happy weekend to all of you :)

Happy OT Beanies!

How was the 2nd week of 2019?
For some odd reason, I had to put a pause on Encounter, not even the kiss could bring me back. I will get back on it though because I'll miss Bogummy's smiles.

Memories of Alhambra EMMA! May I see the twist this weekend involving you.

Sky Castle That preview, is it really between the three of them or is it suicide as a beanie posted on the fanwall?

I started Chuugakkusei Nikki this week and I really want to watch the end just to know if they end up together or not xD

Currently updated with these variety shows 1N2D (new director, well, he's been with the team so not really new xD) , Master in the House ( I guessed this week's Master!) , Life Bar (I'm about to watch this week's ep), I Live Alone, Problematic Men (solved a few problems myself ^^) and of course, Coffee Friends (can't wait to watch more eps)!

I also watch quite a few variety shows. I'll have to check out Coffee Friends, that's a new one to me. Master of the House was cool this week. I Live Alone has developed into a really fun show. I loved Hoya's (and Hoya's Team) performance on Immortal Songs 2 this week to kick of the new year; The Manager is a riot; Masked Singer has such high-quality performances and I am always impressed; Happy Together - once again - is trying to find its footing. You know what I miss? A good foodie show!

Life Bar: I just read about it. Yoon So-hee(witch's love) told the reason how she went to the best high school and KAIST -was because of Kim Tae-hee. She wanted to become an actress when she was young and her mom showed her Kim Tae-hee drama saying she was an actress who was pretty and smart, and Yoon should be smart at least. That was wake-up call and she studied very hard. A tip for Sky Castle moms?

I am finding Boyfriend boring too! I love Park Bogum and Song Hyekyo but everything is so perfectly laid out in this drama that I find it so fantasy like and I don't know i'm losing interest. It is still a beautiful drama but I find this drama is at the bottom of my list now of things to watch although Alhambra has shot up the list. This show leaves me at the edge of my seat every week and I love it. It's definitely not your typical kdrama!

Maybe it is boring or just too slow? Or I'm looking for laughs these days that's why I'm sticking with variety shows. Although I wouldn't say the other dramas I'm watching are comedy material but the plots are certainly tighter than Encounter.

The crowned clown is the perfect way to start the new year. But I have realised that the joys of kdrama watching lies in bingeing rather than live watching (atleast for me) but it's so hard to resist a drama when you know it's going to be a solid one. I can only resist watching thrillers until they are finished coz for the life of me I can't imagine live watching a thriller.
What do our lovely beanies do to resist watching a drama till it's completion?

8

reply

Required fields are marked *

Resistance be damned! I completely give in to the madness and live watch! Really though, I prefer it to bingeing because it gives me the time to absorb; oftentimes I will watch raw to get the gist while waiting for subtitles- I can miss facial nuances reading. Also, I find I can get overwhelmed with the emotional torrent of a great drama like Mr. Ahjussi....I would drown.

I like both live watching and bingeing. I want to catch up on The Clowned Prince so I can live watch it. I dont know anything about that era of Korea and I want to read recaps and discussions as I go.
But I just spent a week with Just Between Lovers and it was lovely.

I agree. Till date I count those dramas as my best dramas which I marathoned. I wonder if the result would be different had I live watched them too. I think live watch can make you assess dramas better and you tend to ignore many mistakes while marathoning. That is why it is a better experience. But once i started live watching, I have since then never gotten back to marathoning. That is extremely tiring. If a good show passes by, it has passed for me then.

3

Required fields are marked *

I think live watch can make you assess dramas better and you tend to ignore many mistakes while marathoning. >> TRUE!!

Life is too shirt to waste on bad kdramas, but there are bad kdramas that cannot be skipped (or in my case, when my favorite actors/actresses are too good to pass up even with bad dramas). That's when marathoning a drama comes in handy because you can constantly use the fast-forward button and if a drama is really bad you can skip obsessing or breaking your heart over bad cliffhangers or angst. Mistakes and bad writing will go unnoticed and ignored. I found that I actually enjoyed watching many bad kdramas because of this habit.

3
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes there is a lesser probability of dropping a drama if I marathon it because i would rather just fast forward and reach its end. However, with live watching, earlier I used to give a show 4 episodes, but these days only 1 or 2. My patience for bad dramas is reaching its brink.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I got nothing. I try to resist until I have at least 4 episodes to binge, but I have failed at this all too often. I’m too impatient.
I prefer marathons over live-watching too. I feel more confident about finishing a drama that (reviews tell me) didn’t turn into a train wreck. With live watching I can’t be sure... In rare cases I resisted for longer and then binged in time to catch up with the finale. Rare cases.

I guess my recommendation is to mix it up. Live watch during the week and have a good old marathon from your to-watch list once in a while.

6

Required fields are marked *

This is like my eternal debate with dramas that look SO GOOD. Do I wait? Can I wait? Can I handle NOT WAITING? It's always so hard. Usually, if there is a show I really want to wait (Like TCC; I'm going to try and wait on that one), I have to find 2-3 other dramas that can fill the time. Sometimes that's a good rewatch (Hello Healer); sometimes it's another live show that's good but that I don't mind pacing through. But it's always so hard to decide. And tbh, I fail A LOT. It's been a while since I managed to save a whole show until the end.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Less risk of dropping if I watch it live, so I prefer live watching.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree completely! The only drama I have ever live-watched is Children of Nobody and I'm not regretting it only because it is emotionally exhausting. But I'm not going to continue live-watching. I love watching at my own pace and mood.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Those are long episodes to binge! I love both, but binging is satisfying. You know what I've been doing with Memories of the Alhambra? I rewatch the episodes while waiting for the next ones. I've done that with other K-dramas before - it helps keep the pace and lessen the suspenseful waiting game!

4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Resistance is futile!

Part of the point of kdramas is the fun of DB recaps & discussions. For me at least, that means live-watch if possible so I know what people are talking about.

8
reply

Required fields are marked *

I quit live-watching since two years ago. Been doing quite well resisting.. How do I do it?... Get used to it! It's never easy to deal with spoilers but I rather have it that way than be on a non-stop emotional roller-coaster from all the live-watching.

Tip: Focus on finishing up the completed dramas to distract yourself from the ongoing ones. That's how I ended up having 46 beans last year!

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's a pretty good Idea. Thank you dear beanies for your insight. I agree some dramas are best for live watching where you can have time to properly absorb and assess all interpretations it has to offer. For dramas where writing tends to incline towards the shabby ad-hoc style, marathoning can ensure a more probable chance of completion.
I am trying to fill up the time between crowned clown by rewatching Circle .

I recently saw his photos when he was in his early 20s and I have to say he looks better and better with age. Some actors have feminine features and don’t age that gracefully but he’s really manly and became one hot ahjussi. I personally think men look best in their mid 30s to their mid 40s.

I don’t know if it’s just me who think HB has this confident aura around him. Like the man who’s totally with ease and confident with his looks. Even within this crazy competitive industry where the appearance is their assets he looks like someone who’s very self-assured about himself.

He has definitely become better looking with time (not to say he was not super swoony before)...
For an amazing display of dimples and general HB super hotness watch Late Autumn. The movie itself was very art house and he is speaking English for most if it... I'm still trying to find an uncensored version but if you ever doubted him as a kisser even the chopped up version I watched...😊😍

Required fields are marked *

i actually started to wonder along this line. i was thinking about all the ones who had been in the shower scenes and realized a lot were in the military now. (and yes i know i am being WAY too serious about this)

i should also clarify that i'm not necessarily complaining. i just was wondering if dramaland had started trying to objectify people's bodies a little less, or if there was another reason for fewer showers. but maybe the real test will come as the 2019 batch returns from the military...do the showers start back up again?

First week back to work from winter vacation and too tired to read or watch anything. Definitely going to try and catch up tonight and tomorrow.
Though I'm not complaining 8 love that I have a job that let's me have a two week vacation every winter.

So much positive feedback for Forest of Secrets that I'm going to wait a couple of weeks to start it. I want to give it the attention it seems to deserve. Maybe when Memories of the Alhambra ends I'll make it my weekend show. It was wonderful to be able to just focus on JBL last week.

I had seen some mentions of maybe JBL being the best written show in the Editor Year End Review post. That is why I was comparing it in my head, but two different shows.
With My Ahjussi the writing (the story) felt really spare and concise, especially around our two leads. As if the writer really took an editing eye to her work and then the actors filled in all the quiet spaces.

There's nothing worse than TV slump. I've tried everything; Chinese, Turkish, Spanish, British, american, jdorama, nothing really works since Christmas. I have tried to read and I checked books suggested by Bill Gates on his blog, butI ended up having bad headache this morning.
Is there any potion to cure TV slump?? I really need it. I miss the excitement of starting a new drama or series and painful withdrawal after the shows ends.

I believe once you are in kdrama land, only a good kdrama can bring you back. You might temporarily (which can be a long period of time too), watch other shows but one is bound to come back if they like the emotional punch only kdramas carry.

You're so right about emotional punch, I think this is why I like K-drama. Among new series on Netflix, Hill House is the one I enjoyed the most for the familial relationship and emotional punch. But I haven't finished that too. The ghost part was getting too scary for me.
I couldn't get into variety shows either. Sometimes I watched snippets from Knowing Brothers or dramas on YouTube, but I'm not interested to watch the whole shows/episodes, except Alhambra, I think because I've watched this far, I want to get answer and closure.
I'm looking forward Kim Namgil new drama in February. I really hope I'm already over this slump by the time the drama starts. I don't want to miss it.

+1 for taking a break. Trying to force yourself out of the slump by watching even more kdramas might have the opposite effect of dulling your love for them, since you end up seeing them as a chore and not something you do for fun. Just accept that you're not in the mood for it right now and there's nothing wrong with you. :)

When I'm in a slump I do what I feel like doing. Read, window shop cute stationery online, pester our doggies, dream about the cats I would own if we didn't have spoiled dogs in the house, vegetate in front of HGTV channel... haha just do whatever you feel like at the moment.

I'm watching On Air, a 2008 drama, and I hadn't appreciated that acting styles could date as much as fashion and haircuts. Also, it has 4 leads and they'll clearly end up in 2 pairs. Only, I've got a sneaky suspicion that the pairs they'll form are not the pairs I'd like.

So my question for you, Beanies: is there a term for that?

I don't think it's Second Lead Syndrome, as all of the leads will end up with someone - just the wrong someone in my humble opinion.

I like On Air a lot and it did take several episodes to get into it. The pairing took even longer time to come through but in quite a realistic way. Rarely do we have four very adult characters in the lead. A Kim Eun Sook drama that is least Kim-Eun-Sook-esque.

Enjoy!

I really like the meta of KES writing a drama about a writer who always gets extremely high ratings - before she herself was at that point.

I always have a soft spot for Song Yoon Ah (because of Hotelier) and her screeching neurotics is curiously the charm of that writer’s character.

Then I never liked Park Yong-Ha until this drama...

I loved Song Yoon Ah when I saw her in Assembly but I have to admit that her screeching neurotics in On Air really aren't to my taste. Neither is her weird fake-cuteness when she's anywhere near Park Yong-Ha's character. I guess I like my grown-ups to act vaguely like grown-ups.

Kim Ha-Neul is awesome as the star who isn't all that great at acting. I'd seen her first in On The Way to the Airport and absolutely loved her in that too.

3

Just show we all have different taste because KHN never works for me. Her cold demeanor in On Air is nevertheless agreeable as an odd exception.

3

um do i need to start watching this? i've never heard of it, but you guys are making it sounds so tantalizing!

1

@epyc2010 hearing that what doesn't work for me worked for other people, is part of the fun of chatting with Beanies.

3

@anothernicole I'm enjoying this drama because it's about writing and how kdramas are made...

And if reality is anything like how it's depicted here, I now understand a lot better why a) so many dramas start really interestingly and then get dull b) why casting changes at the last minute c) how production companies and TV stations work together d) why extensions often result in drama cliches.

Plus I've come to realise that I never ever want to write a drama if it's even vaguely like this.

3

@cloggie good to know! i'm super interested in that sort of thing, so maybe i'll give it a casual watch. thanks!

1

@cloggie I wonder if you've seen The World They Live In, aka Worlds Within? It came out at about the same time as On Air and covered similar ground, starring Hyun Bin and Song Hye Kyo (it led to their rl romance). I liked it more than On Air.

The World They Live in came from another famed writer, Noh Hee-Kyung whose “Live” is an outstanding drama in 2018.

3

@epyc2010 I thought "Live" was a masterpiece. I loved that drama so much.

Right - this has gone straight to the top of my To Watch list.

1

@cloggie I'd create a new phrase/terminology for this. How about:

Couple Mismatch

Ot week 100! I’m in the birthplace of Dramabeans this Friday, sunny Southern California! For the past 100 or so weeks, I’ve been sharing my thoughts on dramas on this site and I just wanted to thank everyone for indulging me and my mediocre writing! I’ve had a blast! Also, you all have seen how I’ve gone from Kdrama novice to a loan shark with a heart of gold! Also, how I was sucked into the Kpop vortex and have yet to come out! I’m also on California time this week, which is why I’m so late to the open thread. I hope you all are having a good weekend!

I was able to start My Ahjusshi, finally, on the plane ride here, and it is very well done. Very dark, very heavy, but well-done. I have problems watching something so dark, I usually like rom coms for their levity and so watch them the most. But this one was so highly recommended, I thought that for its artistic value and IU’s performance, I owed it to myself to at least see what all the fuss was about. I realized about 20 minutes into the first episode that Ji-an says absolutely nothing, but you already know the horrible life she is living, her demeanor, and her living situation in those few minutes. I’m starting episode 5, and I hope that there will be some movement on the “ahjusshi’s” side. I want to see him find out everything and snap. But his morals may keep him in check, which Ji-an needs as well.

Boyfriend is still everything I need it to be, light, loving, and some beautiful smiles to get through the week. I said I wanted PBG smiling for 16 episodes, and he has delivered, in spades.

I’ve dropped Memories of Alhambra for the time being. If this show has taught me anything useful, it’s how to spell “Alhambra.” Otherwise, I started to wane when random people started dying. Not random, but undeserving of death. I was fine that those with malicious intent could play the game and actually die, but not okay with innocent bystanders or those that are actively trying to assist and ally our hero die. So, I’ll sit the rest of this one out until the end and then maybe pick it back up.

I’m looking forward to starting The Crowned Clown, but not sure when at this point. I’ll keep up with the recaps though!

Conversation:

Husband: So what happened in Boyfriend last episode. *He fell asleep.*

Me: Well, um, they were in Cuba, and it was so cute. And then they came back…And then…

Daughter: Did you fall asleep too???

Me: No…there’s just not a lot that happens. You have to just watch it.

Husband: This is true. I hadn’t seen 4 episodes and we came back and haven’t missed anything.

Me: Except Bogummy’s million watt smiles a dozen times per episode.

Daughter: That’s the only reason you’re watching this mom!

Moral of the Story: Yep, I’d watch PBG in anything. But this one is really good, I promise.

2nd Moral: Vacation time is the best time…even if I’m not watching as many dramas as I would like...

My Ajusshi! Yeah, it is dark, although not like forever. Be patient.
Still, it is worth.
I am also in ep. 4. I think I ended it, but haven't had the time to start ep. 5.
I have watched and rewatched the two "Encounter" ep we had this week. I like everything. But by the way... I found ep. 12 less enjoyable to watch. I am not liking the ex husband at all, although there is something weird about him, as if he is playing a double game: being evil and being less evil, in order to really protect SH from his mother, and yet, doing it for selfish reason, I don't know if you understand...
But we will see...

Happy Friday Beanies!

10 Miles of Peach Blossoms I'm rewatching this. I wasn't planning to but I watched a couple episodes with my mom and got hooked again. Binge watched it all again in a week. I remembered the overall story but I was surprised how many details and plot points I had actually forgotten. I absolutely love Ye Hua. I don't find Mark Chao very attractive but damn is his character attractive. Ye Hua may be a super serious, stoic character but he is such a romantic. You can feel his intense love through his actions, his small happy smiles, his sexy kisses and his tears. I love the romance between him and Bai Qian/Su Su and how awesome of a dad he is to his super adorable son. I also love Bai Qian and how badass she is, but how dense she is when it comes to romance (people say she is a moron in romance), and how flustered she gets with Ye Hua's intense pursuit of her. I absolutely love the story but the only part I think the drama snags on is the romance between Bai Fengjiu and Dong Hua. I initially liked it, but by the end it was annoying. Bai Fengjiu just comes across as super obsessed and immature rather then in love. Dong Hua keeps repelling her but she doesn't get the clue and keeps throwing herself at him, even when she has been told it could have bad implications against both of them. But overall I adore this drama. It was the drama that got me into Chinese dramas after all.

Accidentally In Love Found this on Netflix and really liking it. It's cute and I love the relationship between the main couple. Both actors do a good job, they both feel natural and have great chemistry with each other. Qingqing is super cute and rambunctious and her total disregard of Situ Feng and him being an idol is golden. Super cute school Cdrama that I highly suggest. I will say though, Situ Feng looks much better as a woman then a man (probably because the wig covers his ginormous ears).

He is the perfect romantic lead. Even though he may be cold and stoic he was never an ass to Bai Qian/Su Su, was only caring and loving to her from the beginning. And boy is he loving and caring to her 😍 Of course Bai Qian/Su Su couldn't help but fall in love with him. I mean, who could resist that?!

And yes, I am a sucker for good fathers, so that just pulled me under his thrall even more. We all need a Ye Hua in our lives.

TGIF! First full working week of the year and I am already tired. Good there is energy pill called drama. It looks that makjang weekend drama writers might take over weekdays too - Now it is Moon Young-nam(What's Wrong Mr. Poong-sang) after Kim Soon-ok(Empress's Dignity). I wonder they would become trend. btw Question now is are we going to have new no.1 cable drama ratings-wise, surpassing Reply 1988 and Goblin? Sky Castles have many good actors/actresses, and one of them is the lead Yum Jung-ah who plays Han Seo-jin, Ye-seo's mom. I found a few interviews with her. (Personally if I have to pick the best acting, it will be the Cordi played by Kim Seo-hyung who was praised by the PD.)

[namu.wiki] Yum Jung-ah (46) was "Sun"(second place) in the "Miss Korea" beauty pageant in 1991 and debuted with TV drama "Our Paradise" (1991, but couldn't stay to the end because she had to participate in "Miss International" contest where she took the 3rd place.) and the film "Jazz Bar Hiroshima" (1992). She kept working even after her marriage in 2006. Her notable films include A Tale of Two Sisters(2003), The Big Swindle(2004), The Old Garden(2007), Cart(2014), The Mimic(2017), and Intimate Stranger(2018) and did TV series like Working Mom(2008), Royal Family(2011), Shut Up Flower Boy Band(2012), Your Neighbor's Wife(2013), and Mirror of the Witch(2016). She received the acting award for the film "Cart" and "The Mimic".

It is said that she gained more male fans thanks to the nude scene in the film "Terrorist" (1995). Yum said she was completely flummoxed about the scene which came out of blue and sobbed after the shoots. At that time there were cases film directors forced actresses to have nude scenes and Yum revealed later it gave her wounds. (Funny thing is that she got recognition with this film).

Because she debuted with her sophisticated urban image and Miss Korea background, her career didn't go much further for years, but when she presented an excellent acting as eccentric and hysterical step-mom abusing her children in "A Tale of two sisters" in 2003, she was recognized in the film industry again. Director Kim Ji-woon stated how he cast her. "I always thought she acted well. I felt that she had star quality, but couldn't meet the turning point. I happened to drink coffee with Jung-ah ssi, and I saw her responding sensitively to the tiny sound around her. It was impressive how she was very sensitive to smell, taste not just sound, and responded keenly. So I thought it would be interesting if I make the step-mom character like her. Pale, thin looks, unstable and hysterical character was completed thanks to her."
Yum did femme fatale acting in the film "The Big Swindle" in 2004, receiving Best Actress award. Yum herself mentioned "I don't think there would be this cool character in Korean films again." (Well, Drama "Heartless city" comes into my mind). In the same year in the film "Lovely...

...Rivals/Female teacher vs female student" (Lee Se-young(The Crowned Clown) played the student.), she played comical character proving her variety of acting skills. In 2011 she played the lead role in the drama Royal Family(Ji Sung) and received the acting award in Korea Drama Awards. She gained the nick "Misirella" during the broadcast.

Yum also appeared in a few varieties. In "2days 1night", Yum appeared with other actresses and showed the image of ordinary housewife worrying about her in-laws and children. It seemed she was also in good terms with regular folks. In the show they did filming while Yum spent time with her neighborhood people. Her easy-going, humble, down-to-earth attitude without concerning her image, along with honest answers in varieties, unlike her sophisticated looks impressed the viewers.

Yum is also ardent viewer of "Walking into the world"(KBS travel show) and even did narrations in the show. She also does volunteer works which included supporting children visiting Senegal in Africa. As side story, she dated Jang Dong-gun(Gentleman's dignity) in early years (Actually I read an article long ago in which Yum said her and Jang's families were close so they were like friends.). She did many projects with late Kim Young-ae(The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop) with whom she played daughter-in-law a few times, and Yum once mentioned Kim was her role model. Yum had great 2018 because her movie "Intimate Stranger" did well (It made news when she became shy seeing Son Suk-hee in JTBC newsroom where she appeared to introduce the film. heh) and JTBC's Sky Castle received (and still has) impressive responses.

First here is her early interview done after the drama "Royal Family"[vogue, 2011.08.04]
Q: You came from DongTan (where Yum lives)?
Yum: Yes, I don't come to Seoul too often. Even if there is business to attend, I ask my manager to make an appointment avoiding the time my children go to kindergarten. Because they love that their mom pick them up. DongTan is very cool new city. There are many sophisticated people in 30's and you wouldn't believe moms' passion for education.
Q:You also seem to have much interests on education.
Yum: My children don't want to stay behind. My eldest child is 4 and half years old, and I am actively attending moms' meetings.
Q:You mingle with ordinary moms well?
Yum: I have to. I am thankful they let me. I am the eldest in the group. It started with 3 people but it keeps growing. Not long ago, all families, moms, dads and kids went on a trip together to Kang-won Do(Province).

Q: You seem enjoying your daily life.
Yum: Of course. And my husband was chosen as the president in the group. All husbands in our group drink only in their homes because they are all family-oriented. We eat together every day, and if we hear someone fought, we all rush over and clear things up.
Q: It sounds like a countryside village in some foreign land. Healthy version of "Dangerous Wives"?
Yum: Right. As I've lived there, my life became more solid and fuller.
Q: On the contrary, life is too busy and competitive in Seoul.
Yum: Well, as far as educational fever is concerned, it is incredibly heated even in there. And I am on the front on that.
Q: You seemed to become more honest in a variety after completing Royal Family successfully.
Yum: I had fun in the variety because I talked with Ajumma mind- I don't have anything to hide thinking "So what? I am ajumma. I am married, have husband and children, so there is nothing to care."

Q:You played Wang Gun's second wife in the drama "Wang Gun". I thought Yum Jung-ah could remain as life(no special) actress working like that.
Yum: Really? That character was good. The fact that I was Wang Gun's second wife was not important, but it was important that the child I gave birth became the king. A film production co. ceo Oh Jung-wan contacted me around that time, saying a good actress is living without gaining the presence. With that I could do the film again. Filmed A tale of two sisters too. She is grateful unni. I hang out with her the most even while I dated my husband.

Q: Was there any thirst you felt before you got the offer for such film?
Yum: I was ok. Did I look pitiful? I played mostly a rich man's daughter, or woman who took her friend's boyfriend, but I thought I just had to play such roles.
Q: And the time changed.
Yum: Right. All of sudden people couldn't stand a nice character without any backbones with no reason. They wanted the role who has a reason even though the person is evil, the persuasive, credible, and compelling role, the role which draws sympathy even when the character does terrible deeds.
Q: It was like step-mom role in "A Tale of two sisters", right? like 6-7 years ago. You played with Im Soo-jung and Moon Geun-young who were sisters. It was time all were so fresh and young.
Yum: I still can't believe Geun-young is so grown-up.

Q: Is there any celebrity you are still close?
Yum: No. Just to the level of keeping in touch with Kim Ha-neul and Seo Woo who did 2d1n together? It is hard to hang out with actresses. In the past I lived thinking "I am an actress" but now I live two lives. Do you think I live like an actress in my house? No. Running around even without having time to wash my face with all my might physically, I am busy taking care of children. But when I come to a place like this, I become special existence. People look at me that way too. But in moms' gatherings in my space if unni who they see everyday eating ddukbbokgi together shows up with full make-up, they feel very awkward. Still I am more comfortable with such life.

Q: What do you think is the secret you are loved by your husband?
Yum: The fact I love my life. Living cheerfully and having fun. I am really good at doing something with my all might physically with passion. My husband seems to think I look cute living my best with energy within his embrace. But my husband makes it possible. He is a doctor, but has good business sense too and very cool.
Q: You are very different from a princess image.
Yum: What you mean! I even take 3-4 children in the neighborhood to their kindergartens. I can never act like a princess to other moms. If I do that, who'd like me? Since I am the eldest unni in our group, I have to show more kinder side of me as an example.
Q:It must be great joy raising children for you.
Yum: Of course it is huge. It is so big that I have fear if I can do a good job.

Q:You became in your 40's. It must be different from your 20's or 30's.
Yum: Everything was so clumsy in my 20's. I was lost as I imitated others having shallow emotions and terrible lows and highs. I became more comfortable in 30's as I worked, got married, and had children- it was the most productive period. Now I am at the beginning of my 40's, and my mom says 40's is the peak in woman's life. I have high expectations what I can achieve.
Q: What do you think about your looks? You can say you are royal family in "looks" department with Miss Korea background.
Yum: There are many things I don't like on my looks, but I try to think positively. I get upset if someone says I am not pretty, but I don't think I am perfect myself.
Q: In a talk show, you said you had different beauty from Go So-young(Jang Dong-gun's wife) who was your college alumni. You said she was pretty on face, but you were pretty all over.
Yum: I just wanted to emphasize we looked different. I wonder if she felt upset? That was not what I meant.

Q: If someone asks what kind of woman you want to be?
Yum: It used to be a sexy woman, but now it is an attractive woman.
Q: What kind of atmosphere is it when many actresses get together?
Yum: Well, I can't stand if someone tries to be treated special. When it happens I want to teach her the lesson "You are not special" anyway possible.
Q: How was "Royal family"?
Yum: We were cool. If you observe a drama filming situation, you know actress can't be a princess. They can't sleep, not able to remove their make-up, gather together to eat night snack, etc., so it is not possible for anyone to be a princess. It is life of wild animals.
Q: when do you feel you are old?
Yum: When I find the wrinkles in my laughing face in the mirror under the bad lighting while I am talking on the phone.
Q: What comes into your mind then?
Yum: Oh, I have to change lighting.

lol so she used to be overeager mom? And her neighbors sounds like ajumma version of neighborhood ajussis in "My Ajussi". Continues with more recent interview...

Yum Jung-ah had a few interviews after the film "Intimate Strangers" opened last year. [ajunews, topstarnews.net, sportsseoul, interview365, 2018.10-11] In the film which told the story of 3 couples, she played an ordinary housewife living sorry life with gruff patriarchal husband and mother-in-law while taking care of 2 children.

Q: How did you land on this role?
Yum: "Intimate Strangers" was the film I saw its first kind. Scenario and structure were all fresh. And I knew director Lee Jae-kyu make good projects, so I had trust. Seeing actors being casted, I thought "Wow what we are going to do with these synergy?" having high expectations. Actors were all so perfect that I started with the mind "All it needs is me acting well." I felt assured. Even if there is area I miss I thought others would fill that gap.

Q: Your character Soo-hyun was realistic and received sympathy from female audiences.
Yum: I acted thinking there were people like her around us. And I tried to express more on obedient image than what was written in the scenario. I wanted to show Soo-hyun had kind mind. The image of wife who is abused by her husband- I know because many older generation moms have lived suffering in such conditions even a little. Soo-hyun was living a hard life, but I still felt she was nice person who thought "I just live thinking positively." as long as her husband didn't cause big trouble because she had children.
Q: Soo-hyun used honorifics to her husband Tae-soo. How is your husband in real life?
Yum: My husband is much more friendly. He is family-oriented and takes good care of family. And even though I don't look like it, I have obedient side toward my husband. Actually I use honorifics to my husband too. I started speaking casually but it changed which happened naturally. Of course when we argue, we drop formalities.
Q:Soo-hyun wrote poem as a way out. How do you relieve you stress?
Yum: I just focuse on raising children. Also while there was books for Soo-hyun, I have acting. I am most myself and happy when I work. Especially this year I was able to play variety of characters having fun so I was happy. The director and actors I've worked with were nice too.

Q: You have short haircut. Is it for the drama?
Yum: No. I cut for the film "Peppan/Hit and Run Unit" during summer. I played a character who was higher-up in the police station. I hope the response on my haircut is not bad.
Q: How was playing husband and wife with Yoo Hae-jin?
Yum: I thought it would be fun. My husband said he enjoyed watching my couple acting with him. He said 7 actors/actresses seemed fit to their roles and combination was good. Yoo Hae-jin ssi might've acted ambiguously, but I acted taking in whatever he threw. All came out so natural. I became closer to him and found he was nice person. I had hardship on ad-lib scenes because I had to cry alone when all others laughed. Yoo Hae-jin ssi gave me the most hardship. He did...

...something out of blue which he didn't do during rehearsals, so I felt like dying. I had hard time because it was so funny.
Q:Can you do ad-lib?
Yum: No I can't. I admire actors who can do ad-lib well. Yoo Hae-jin sunbae and Jo Jin-woong ssi can do ad-lib really well. I wonder if they have eyes of directing. I am just amazed how they make up conversation and continue the situation. I can't do it at all. It was amazing and made watching fun.

Q: The movie was even better with the ensemble of many perfect acting.
Yum: The people in the film were 40 year long-time friends. I think chemistry got even better among actors as certain boundary broke down when we filmed together and ate together every day. From the time we got up and till the time we went to bed we spent time together, so we lived like a family. We could see others' habits, and learned their favorite foods- we were family. And since all were actors with good acting skills, we learned from one another naturally. I thought "I understood this way reading the script, but that actor interpreted that way."
The most difficult thing was repeating same thing every day - do rehearsals, shot bust scenes- filming repeatedly and maintaining was hard. Each one was the lead in the film taking turns. When filming such scenes, all other actors were side characters, so I slept when I didn't have my scene feeling at ease. It was new experience.
Q: You ate meal together every day. What did you talk about during the meal?
Yum: We had lunch and dinner together every day but we didn't spent much time on it. Because we had to take a rest after the meal, everyone ate a lot as quickly as possible and left at lightning speed.

Q: It had 3 couples -Yoo Hae-jin/Yum Jung-ah, Jo Jin-woong/Kim Ji-soo, Lee Seo-jin/Song Ha-yoon. Which couple garnered the most sympathy?
Yum: Us I think. Other couples had too much problem. Our couple had problem which could be overcome if efforts were made.
I cried a lot watching the movie. I got emotional especially with Suk-ho(Jo Jin-woong) and Ye-jin(Kim Ji-soo)'s plot. There was a scene them lying down together on the bed, and the image of Suk-ho was so sad. I kept tearing up. I thought "Ah, everybody live like that."
Q:How similar each actor was to his/her character?
Yum: They all were different from their characters. If I have to pick though, Song Ha-yoon(Devilish Charm) who played Se-kyung might be similar in her bouncy personality. I had in common is that I am housewife too, but other actors seemed to have more contrasts.

Q: You've done 54 projects since you debuted in 1991. How do you choose a project?
Yum: There is no technique or system. When I read the scenario, there is a project catches my eyes, maybe because I have read many books. My heart beats with those projects.
Q: Any disappointment working as an actress?
Yum: They say there is not enough role woman can play. I agree. At the same time I think it is ok as long as there is a role a person can act. But the thing actresses feel sad is that in the movie where there are many men, there is no woman character. I want to be included in such big projects, but there is no role. I hope "Intimate Strangers" become hit and there are more projects in which everyone can do the role he/she is responsible, while working together.

Q: You are also working mom who raise children and you have the nick "DongTan mom".
Yum: I have know-how now. Until kids were in the kindergarten, I thought I needed to involve and had to do everything myself. But I let go a little not long ago, and kids started doing themselves and I had easier time. Now kids are doing many things themselves.
Q: There must be projects you missed due to marriage and children.
Yum: Must be. But I didn't even glance the scenario at that time. It happened naturally because children were so precious.
Q: Your experience must be helpful in acting for Sky Castle.
Yum: No, it is difficult. Because I am not that extreme like my character in the show.

Q: Is it hard to adjust to drama environment?
Yum: Last-minute script/Jjokdaebon is a thing of past. I haven't felt hardships in recent years like set atmosphere being difficult. It is fun and I am happy thinking about the part of making the character and present her to the viewers. If I have to pick the difficulty, when it is cold, it is too cold, and when it is hot, it is too hot, and too sleepy- Things I can overcome.

Q: So acting is fun?
Yum: These days it is even more fun. Because there were times I couldn't act even if I wanted. I love acting. There are more good things than things difficult. I didn't know anything in my 20's, but now I know the importance of people around me. As I got older I gained more understanding, I think. I changed a lot raising the children. And It has been 27 years since I started acting, but I am not too concerned about getting old, because it is natural occurrence. I just feel "How time passed this fast?" I don't have the thought like "I wish people see me this way." I just hope people cheer me on.

Q: Is there any role you want to challenge as an actress? Do you have any plan?
Yum: I want to challenge a musical film if opportunity is given- movie like "Mamma Mia" or "Lalaland".
Me in the past was much more sensitive than present-day me. But as I live with optimistic mind, I feel at ease more. Because even if there is something lacking right now, I can always do better in the future.

Yum Jung-ah also talked about "Sky Castle". [OSEN, 2019/01/03]
When asked the reason for the show's popularity, Yum said "I think unpredictable incidents which keep happening, fast-paced plot, many actors' good acting and ending with impact got hold of viewers' interests." As the most memorable line, she picked the line "I will rip your mouth apart". "I was shocked when I read the scripts, but when I spoke the line, I felt satisfaction and fun." As a parent who raise two children, Yum said "I still can't decide on the direction as to what I should do while raising children, and I get even more confused doing this drama. In the show, Jin Ji-hee ssi told his son "You mom doesn't know well." and I thought I might become like that and if it happens, I'd feel really sorry to my children." Yum wants her children to understand her. "Eventually your mom's biggest goal is that you live happily. I also wish the process is happy one too. Your mom and dad will always cheer you on and support."
About the question if there is something in common with her character Seo-jin, Yum said "We are similar in that we want to be a best mom and best housewife. Han Seo-jin is the character whose ambition is way too high that she doesn't look around her. I hope Seo-jin takes a burden off a little from her mind." Lastly Yum stated her wish. "It will be nice if opportunity to meet the projects I want to do keeps coming." (you can find full contents in YouTube clip "JTALK")

I am late in the game but I am glad I found the gem My ID is Gangnam Beauty on Netflix. It is very well-written and directed, with a great ensemble! The actress playing Mirae does a wonderful job acting as the awkward young girl going through self-discovery. Insights on beauty, sexism and harassment were carefully thought out. I am only on episode 6 but this is a binge that I am happy to lose sleep for, after the roller-coaster that is Misty.

Do you think you could give me examples of my ID is gamnan beauty's very well writing??? Like some pieces of it and show me why is it well written???
I remember I have heard only good reviews about this drama, and I watched parts of almost all episodes from beginning to end, just parts, like, mostly where the main female lead was, and I found it shallow.. personal perspective. I also found it predictable.
But, please, that is why I am asking you. Show me bits of good writing in this drama, so that I can see if I change my mind.
Thank you!!!

It was interwoven in the small things that when watched altogether is just satisfying and enlightening.

(@light don't read further in case of spoilers!)

One is the slow buildup to highlighting how toxic the heroine's thinking was. Even if she was a victim of bullying because of her looks, she still ended up judging others by the same. The heroine eventually unlearned it. But there was this whole arc where the pretty villain acted nice to the heroine and she kept trusting Villain because she liked being friends with a pretty person, even while she sorta ignored the really solid classmates who've always been there for her (because in heroine's opinion, they scored lower on the face scale). I like that the show pointed that out. Usually, in plastic-surgery-plots, they just give the heroine a makeover spurred by scorned love. Then PS turns her life around because she's hot and everyone likes her now. But here, the show takes time to explore what kind of thoughts people actually have when going under the knife, and how their new lives also comes with its own set of problems.

There's that arc where everyone was judging her for getting cosmetic surgery, until the show points out via a character that people blame girls for being too fat, too skinny, too sexy, too tame, etc. but then when the girls do something about it, society judges them anyway for being "fake". Not to mention that icky arc where the Sunbae assumed Heroine was easy prey because she obviously had plastic surgery and is craving attention. Which also points out the incorrect toxic assumption that girls prettify themselves to attract a guy, and people don't believe it when the girls say they just want to feel pretty about themselves.

In Heroine's case, she just wanted to be normal. To walk the streets and go to class and be a normal person, and not have people stare and call her ugly or exclude her all the time. Of course it was futile because after the surgery, people still judged her anyway. Which leads to the show's overall message that the cure is (1) society should stop being judgemental assholes, or (2) accept that some people can be assholes and protect yourself by standing up for yourself and loving yourself (which includes staying friends with real people who will support you and not picking friends based on looks or riches or whatever external metric).

There's also the multiple arcs in the college club. It was mostly a vehicle to depict how guys and girls naturally fall into (unfair) roles. Like picking the pretty girls to man the booths, assuming the girls will cook, men always joking openly and ranking the girls' looks in front of them "just for fun", girls dressing "like guys" being weird, etc. Of course the show points out how all those big and small things are all wrong.

I can't remember them all by now. I just recall watching this and always nodding at the screen because of how realistic the issues were. I always alternated reactions between:
"Yes, yes this happens and it's not right and I am angry at how unfair it all is. Thank you for putting it out there, Show." or
"Huh... I didn't realize... you're right, I am part of this system too and I should try to remove those biases."

Wow, Mary. You are good in your analysis. Thank you.
I agree with you now, and I remember I also distinguished patterns of wrong mentality in different characters and scenes, but I felt upset because it seemed all they could talk about was this topic, looking good, plastic surgery, etc... I was like: "do I have to believe young people in Korea don't have anything else to talk?"
I come from a Latin country and there physical appearance and make up and beautification is also an aspect very present in the culture, but I think in Korea it is extreme, and I know this is not the only show that depicts such issues. As much as they could exaggerate in order to enrich their plot, I know it is not a fake matter.
But yes, because of the way it was highlighted throughout the whole story, I felt overwhelmed by it and found many outcomes predictable.
In my mind it became shallow.
But I have to agree with your points. What the writer and PD wanted to express in this show, they have accomplished it. Maybe that is why people liked this drama a lot.
Me, I wish I would have seen more spiritual themes or simply other type of problems that wouldn't have anything to do with the physical appearance of the characters, but... well...
It was another kind of drama.
It is ok.
It also had a happy end, and I liked that really at the end, they said they didn't care anymore what others thought about them. It was a good end.

@mary Leave it to the writer to describe the writing of Gangnam Beauty! I waited until I completed the series to write this as I saw your spoiler warning! Love the drama and the ending. I agree with all your points and then some! I found myself agreeing with many of the messages too, and I learned a few more. It made me think about the things we should not say to children, to others, among friends, and especially to ourselves. If a drama can help me think and rethink about how I love myself and how I view other people, it is already a 5 star rating writing/production. Sure few things are predictable, but how the drama made me feel in the end sure is unique, to me. Many of the actresses were natural and nuanced and I am glad they were cast in a drama that allows space for them to act that way. Am very satisfied and happy with it all. I am accepting and loving myself a bit more now, thanks to the drama. I recommend. Hope young girls who watch this drama understand a bit better about how fulfilling a respectful relationship/friendship can be too.

Hi Everyone and Happy OT!
I was sort of supposed to be at a meeting yet another time, but I opted out and slept! A gift to myself.

I've realised that after being involved in multiple volunteer work locations, committees, events ... that I've reached a stage where I can let go and say "No" with greater ease and without feeling 'so bad'. There's always a niggling doubt that I'm being 'lazy', 'I could do more but I'm selfishly holding back' that used to bug me more. It's not so strong now.

I've watched others who, though committed, were able to take breaks, or to go off and miss their commitments without angst. I could hardly do that. But now I've reached a stage, (sensing burnout), where I feel I can take a step back, refuse more work and only take on the work where I believe I'm called. With the call comes the energy, and a lot of joy, so it pays off well!

I guess I'll never feel that I've done enough or as much as I could ... maybe that's true of everyone. However being convinced that trying to keep giving more, because I think I can, would exhaust me, is actually freeing. Knowing that I am called and empowered to choose where I keep giving, is also peace-inducing!

So, this week, I'm happily relaxed while others work and I'm not helping them (much!). 😆

@ALUA The 1st post of 2019 open thread I reserved for you and for

CHUGAKU SEI NIKKI. I waited so that i could reply to you in 2019.
We share similar views on most of the shows so this is my way to show how seriously i consider your analysis of a TV Media.

I agree with your many points made on CHUGAKUSEI NIKKI.
But heart accetped the show and its characters wholeheartedly and mind let heart cherish these feelings so I still consider the show the best of 2018.
Director did good job except his Slow-Motion act overusage. It forced audience to feel a certain moment. Things should have been more real.
9-10-11 episodes had few convenient things happen.
Pure Love was Provided but i think it needed to show more via views of main characters.
Side characters were more like Plot apps to forward the action.
Hiraguchi-san character looked cool but really lacked importance.

Overall - I liked the show and its characters.

@sicarius I have shared similar view in past. I am one among million of viewers and so publicly post my views. On few occasions i had even used DIclaimer. Its funny that you have to use Disclaimer so others can understand that its your personal view. Common Sense is rare for some.

As for Pointing out someone's behaviour we have to also look at those anonymously supporting the said character(in general, involving all sites/blogs/forums of different media)(in Dec, 2018 i pointed it out)

The same remark i have made on various occasions. My stand is quite clear regarding the matter. I'm bemused that some can't even point out open sarcasm and jibes.

I've always maintained story and characters(writer) are above direction+action(director). My 1st criticism is always directed at scriptwriter.

The Tactic of Hit and Run or Throw a stone and then apologize is quite good PR. I find myself in the same position of that Misaeng Guy(episode 6 i think).

>>Ohh you can't criticize trashy kdramas.
>>Ohh there is so argument to make because almighty has decided so.
Why this reminds you of those side character female leads of kdramas?

@saturtledaisy This is not OK. EXACTLY. But that's what superhero movies have done for long(and earned billions. Anyone can go ahead and shout against all those banners)
Being an armchair activist is quite easy. Putting words into someone's mouth is more easy.

General - I can make a long windy comment and refute each and every point bu i feel no desire to correct such ridiculous responses based on personal interpretation.

I was merely trying to explain to another person why your post would draw ire if taken at face value - how I read it - and why those are ridiculous statements to make.

Hello all:

Am sitting here trying to get myself to go outside in this horrible chill. It's "code blue" outside which means everyone in Albany should be careful outside. It's single digits and i get grumpy with single digits. (Farenheit.) I moved my desk to the window so the sun directly hits my neck. Feels so toasty. My pineal gland must be really happy. I'm so overloaded with layered clothing that i can hardly move but i am definitely prepared to face the frozen north.

The doctor threatened me with meds for diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure and wants to see me to do all sorts of management talk and medications. I, who hate medications and totally distrust them, have gone on the offensive and am now on a veggie diet with mostly beans (for the diabetes), taking sorrel tea, flax seed, and beet juice (for the high blood pressure) and avoiding meat (for the cholesterol.) Aaargh, at 59 to suddenly have a change of lifestyle. I went wild and ordered Indian, Middle Eastern, Asian spices so i can eat my beans with different flavours.

Finally got younger son accepted to a special school for disabled folks, ages up to 70+ but NYS has a protocol for any kind of health worker or health institution which is testing for TB. The kid hates needles and shrieks in pain when he sees it. But NYS insists on all applicants getting tested TWICE. Am thinking of using a natural calming med like hemp oil or LTO3 but they often initially calm people but there are rebound issues, like nightmares after hemp oil or headaches after ltheanine. Aaargh. Trying to negotiate with the state is no joke. Such a bother.

Working on several books and stories simultaneously and have decided to shrink one WIP which is 459 pages to a 6000 word short story.

Anyways, on to dramas.

Dramas: I really like Liver or Die but i'm worried i might be dragged through the wringer. Ingratitude and taking family and friends for granted might be hard to sit through. Am assuming we'll be dealing with an MC who wants a liver (?) but with a family that refuses to sacrifice for him as he has for them. Will see if i can watch this without getting angry at the evil siblings.

Loving Alhambra. I know some folks are disliking it but i don't understand why. Maybe they wanted a romance, or maybe they don't like the way the story is told with the flashbacks and switched POV. The Professor is pretty sane for a kdrama grieving father.

Liking Crowned Clown a lot. I'm indifferent to this actor but i'll give him a chance. I think he's trying his best. The ahjusshi actor who plays his nemesis hasn't appeared in a lot of dramas of late so am glad to see him. Bring on the conniving and scheming.

Fate and Furies is so wonderfully soapy with two great vicious ladies.

Loving Story of Minglan. Thinking i should've watched Like a flowing river. Watching Hui Quhi (i will never let you go) but not hooked yet. I don't mind the cheap feel of the story and it...

sorry to hear all med things. As for cholesterol problems, my husband had higher level and higher uric acid. So he started eating oats( Quaker oats) with blueberry with no sugar every morning. He cuts out most sugar, ie cakes etc. In three months or so his cholesterol gone down to a normal range ( reduced from 250 to 200 level)and even uric acid went down quite a lot.
I used to take high blood and cholesterol meds. During the time, though it actually reduced the levels, I found myself not so good, mentally. I became not sharp any more and I blamed on menopause and my age. Then I read articles that HB med and even cholesterol med do some damage to brain functioning so I stopped taking them. and switched to herb med.( oriental ones) Having said that BP over 180 need to be reduced and probably need an aid of some med. I personally do not like eating beans because it causes gas.But I like to use tofu a lot in many dishes. Good luck with your diet and hope the cold winter will die out soon in NY.

good for you to give up beef -- alas, i cannot ever go vegetarian, much less vegan... i love eggs, bacon, sausage... all italian cured meats... pork belly (in small quantities) and side pork (love the salty skin)... i'm going to perish because of these.

i DO support your venturing into the Mediterranean Diet -- i LOVE all foods mediterranean! olives, olive oil, anchovies, capers, lemon... hummus, falafel, greek salad to stay away from the pita (carbs)!

Yeah, after i get over my present hurdle and bring the glucose down i'll be eating only fish i think. Yes, mediterranean diet is great. I just have to avoid salted olives, and super salty anchovies. Am doing intermittent fasting so am hoping that will help as well.

I watched it with a sub. This drama is the most difficult drama to predict for sure. From what I saw, the Kang family is the worst( except the youngest one) I wonder if Dr. Kang knew that Hye Na was his daughter. If not, he would regretted his act later. What they did was despicable. And my, Han seo jin lies lies lies, even tricked Jin to believe her lies. Poor Woo family, they are indeed scapegoats. I think coach made sure that Han Seo Jin lied and brought up something that suggests that Poor WJ is the guilty one to the police. Someone at the police force or in Sky Castle needs to be a Sherlock. Find out the truth faaast!! I hate to see the most shocked ( and sincerely so sorry for his loss)young man is held in police custody.

Coach Kim is really something here . I still am not able to make out her motives . But she’s now moving into the pschyo territory and the Kang family is almost ready to accept that ... for yeh-suhs sake that’s one sick one track mind family . I really whoever did that to hye na get no redemption

Hi~ I'm here to help, haha. Can't say I'm an expert in MITH, but I've definitely seen them all, lol.

Personally I liked the episodes with Boa, football coach Park Hangseo, speedskater Lee Seunghoon, Kang San-ae & Kim Byungman!

I think the one with footballer Park Jisung was the popular too!

I've been binge-watching 2D1N S3 because of Donggu and it's been keeping me alive lately (since I'm only following Boksu and Alhambra). It's really fun to watch with or without guests.. I'm not so happy about the intern though.. I hope he won't replace any of the current members.

I don't know why so many people have reservation or downright hate for Alhambra. It's better than most dramas although it isn't perfect. I suspect they were hoping for more romance and a bigger storyline for our heroine. It's one of my drama cracks and i cannot wait to see Prof Cha endure the onslaught of pixellated NPGs

So I decided to give The Best Chicken a least another episode since I was not feeling ep 1.

Wow, Bo ah is a complete asshole with this inexplicable entitlement.

I am loving loving Ming Lan. So much so that i watch eps raw while waiting for subs. Aargh the wait. I rarely use my ff button for this show. Did not like this at first, thought it way way slow. But once i realized that its a slice of life kind of show, i cant contain my excitement. Someone described this as Austens's Persuasion set in Song dynasty. And I love persuasion.

Saw crowned king. Am i the only one who is wary of the revenge-plot direction the drama is taking. Isnt this in direct contrast to the point of the original movie? Which i thoroughly enjoyed.

Minglan is my drama crack since Ever Night. Sometimes subs come so quickly but other times..wow. I loved Persuasion as well. If you can, check out AvenueX which is a channel on youtube where the lady discusses Chinese Drama. She told about the real book version of Minglan and wow! Totally different.

Hello Beanies and happy Friday. It was a very busy week at work and it was good. Funny story, this morning I saw a photo one of my co-workers took of the man (J) who sits across the aisle from me yesterday afternoon as he was leaving for the day.
J was hunched over his keyboard and his head was hanging down - sound asleep. I am still laughing about it as I type.
I really do love my job and the people I work with.
The news has been so awful this week that I found it hard to even watch Children of Nobody Wednesday night. All I could handle was the Last Empress.
However last night I figured out how to let go of the day: wander around the yard and pull out weeds growing around the bulbs coming up, then fix a serious martini and settle down to laugh through the Last Empress.
Weeding - it's where it's at. I tell ya.
But today I came across this article and found it interesting.
One thing it says is that shows NEVER get cut or canceled. I beg to differ!

Anyway - hope you enjoy - they recommend some great shows, and one's I've never seen. But mostly they say Sky Castle right now is AWESOME!

Good day Beanies! This week has been productive but a bit stressful. I found out some problems about school and I've reached out to the appropriate people and hopefully, it will be settled soon.

While I was working on those real life issues, I've decided to rewatch Mr. Sunshine. Even in the first watch I knew Kim Tae-ri and Lee Byung-hun were marvelous actors. However, I just don't feel any chemistry between them... or is it just me?

What I'm live-watching is Children of Nobody. This week's episodes were just heartbreaking. Kudos to Kim Sun-a for expressing Woo-kyung's emotions so well!

I've also started Just Between Lovers. I'm loving the two leads so far.

Have an amazing day beanies!

I didn't have internet for most of this week. NO K-DRAMAS!!!!!!!! I went to my parents' house to download something from Netflix to my tablet. I chose Reply 1988. I didn't know it would be so funny. I've only watched the first episode but I can't wait to watch the next one.

Good choice! Reply 1988 is one of my all-time fave kdramas. It has all the stuff--family bonds, friendship, love, dreams, etc etc. A precious gem. You won't regret watching it.

Well, I signed into Netflix and realized it was Reply 1997. Oops. I love it, though, and now I want to watch the other two. I have laughed so hard at the first two episodes. Tonight my daughter and nieces are going to watch with me. I can't wait until they see the part about Yoon Jae's surgery. Also, my daughter is OBSESSED with BTS and my nieces with EXO so I'm sure they will identify with Siwon.

Oh hahahhahaha it's okay though. 1997 was the first of the three and was so entertaining. Of course it has the magic of being the first so it holds a special place in my heart since I'm a fangirl myself.. But it's the 1988 that I live-watched and agonized over week after week and it was more family-centered. The romance was just as compelling and I cried hard when my chosen ship didn't stay afloat in the end hahaha. Enjoy the Reply series!

Hi everyone! I'm a new beanie...technically not that new but I figured it's finally time to join the fun.

This decision came as I just saw today's episode of Sky Castle, and I need to discuss it with SOMEONE. Does anyone watch this show and NOT scream internally for 10 minutes after watching an episode?

I am also watching Memories of Alhambra. I know we are in angst-central but we are finally seeing the return of Hyun bin's dimple!

Memories of the Alhambra episode 14 - what what WHAT was that kiss out of nowhere?? I am screaming at the show to give Park Shin Hye more to do - or at least have a romance that makes sense - but what is it with this 19th century passive heroine thing they've got going? If I wasn't loving the rest of the story I would have .....

This is a long shot and I know I have seen that drama, its on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember it.
Scene: bus accident: bus falls into water. 2 girls. One has a shiny necklace. girl 2 wants to try it. girl 1 gives it to girl 2 and girl 2 wears it when the bus falls.
Both girls are brought to the shore and the medic chooses to save girl 2 first because the shiny necklace caught his eye and girl 1 dies.

What drama is this? Why can't I remember it!
