Boys Before Flowers: Episode 22

You can tell we’re in the home stretch of the series because today gave us several flashback montages summarizing storylines from the course of this drama, as though to say, “Remember this? Look how far we’ve come.”

I’ll admit my Boys Before Flowers fatigue kicked in about eight episodes ago — that’s when it started being more fun writing about the drama than actually watching, and let’s face it, it’s always more fun the other way around (the balance did swing back in the other direction in the past couple episodes, so yay!). The flashback montages brought back some nostalgia, and made me feel the tiniest twinge of sadness to be saying goodbye to this drama soon, craziness and all.

EPISODE 22 RECAP

Jun-pyo pleads for Jan-di to tell him not to get married. She doesn’t respond and is called away by an usher saying Jae-kyung is asking for Jan-di, so she leaves without a word. However, from her expression — upset, frustrated — we can see she’s not going to beg Jun-pyo to call the wedding off. He registers this too, to his disappointment.

Jan-di’s (non)response here confuses me a little. I understand her conflict and why she feels she can’t ask him to give up everything for her — but what I don’t get is why she looks pissed, as though she’s mad that he asked. (In my mind, she should have played this scene as being torn and anguished, and instead it comes off vaguely bitchy.)

F3 share Jun-pyo’s letdown — from their chagrin here and the way they were willing to let him break his own arm, it’s obvious they hoped Jan-di could put a stop to this. Meanwhile, the guests wait outside, growing fidgety the longer they are kept waiting, while Jae-kyung sits in her bridal chamber nervously.

Jan-di is led away by the attendant to meet Jae-kyung, but finds herself kidnapped instead — she’s grabbed by one guy and shoved into an elevator with several more. Mama Kang then sends Jun-pyo — still wrestling with his dilemma in the waiting room — a text message with a simple warning: a photo of Jan-di being restrained is accompanied by the words, “The groom is taking too long.” Her implication is clear: If Jun-pyo doesn’t go through with the wedding, Jan-di will come to some kind of harm.

Therefore, she smiles smugly when the groomsmen enter the chapel, followed by (a very tense) Jun-pyo. Next comes the bride, who takes her place by Jun-pyo at the altar.

The minister begins the ceremony, breezing through the opening. When he gets to the part where he asks for any objectors to speak now or forever hold their peace, he isn’t expecting a response and is therefore startled when Jae-kyung raises a hand to get his attention.

The parents are stunned; her father tries to hiss out a warning to her, but Jae-kyung says that she has an objection. She looks around and guesses that there must be others who also have objections, at which point Ji-hoo stands up, followed immediately by Yi-jung, Woo-bin, and Ga-eul.

Jae-kyung: “I cannot marry Gu Jun-pyo. No matter how I look at it, I don’t think I’m suited for marriage right now. I’m sorry to cause so much trouble with my fickleness. Dad, everything is my fault, so please carry on your business with Shinhwa Group. President Kang and Gu Jun-pyo, I’m truly sorry. Please forgive me.”

Tamping down her anger, Madam Kang walks out, followed by the rest of the guests. Confused, Jun-pyo asks Jae-kyung what she’s doing, which she answers with a simple explanation: “I’ve always been a pretty cool person.” Jae-kyung calls her bodyguard Chen to check in on Jan-di, who has been liberated from her kidnappers and is taken to a yacht.

Freed from his obligation, Jun-pyo dashes out of the chapel to the yacht, where he finds a surprised Jan-di waiting alone.

He grabs her in a relieved hug, and I can’t help thinking she doesn’t deserve this, seeing as how she put up no fight and hasn’t really earned his devotion. Still, the key to enjoying what follows is to accept their happy reunion, so I’m doing my best to let this point go.

The yacht sets sail, and from a distance (her hotel room, perhaps), Jun-hee watches, pleased at this turnout.

Yi-jung drives Ga-eul out to the shoreline, amused at her uncontrollable sobbing — Ga-eul has been overwhelmed with emotion at Jae-kyung’s lovely gesture.

After she stops crying, Yi-jung broaches the topic she’d brought up the day before, about how he’d failed to meet Eun-jae three years ago. He tells her, by way of explanation, “I don’t believe in happy endings.”

This spins us into a flashback: Three years ago, he had walked into his studio, flirting with a couple girls, and found Eun-jae waiting. Much like Ga-eul had reacted in a similar scenario (and the similarity must be intentional), Eun-jae had been flustered, accidentally breaking a pot and cutting her finger in her haste to leave.

Yi-jung had chased her outside and asked what she had to say. She’d said, “I have a favor to ask” — but we don’t get to see the rest of this scene so we’ll have to wait to find out.

Meanwhile, more continuity fail (or extravagant waste of resources win?) as Ji-hoo takes out his white horse for a ride — did he ship Rui over to Jeju along with the cars? Ji-hoo thinks back to punching Jun-pyo the night before, and we now see the tail end of that conversation, after Jun-pyo admitted that he couldn’t let Jan-di go:

Jun-pyo: “I’d thought that it might be better to send her to you rather than stay with her when I make things so difficult for her. I didn’t even want to imagine it, but if I had to, I thought the other person must be you, that you were the only one it could be. But still, I can’t do it.”

He returns from his ride to see Jae-kyung waiting to talk to him. Asked whether she regrets letting Jun-pyo go, Jae-kyung answers with her usual cheerfulness, “The moment I let him go, I’ve been regretting it to death.”

Ruefully, she tells him, “I was rooting for you, but I’d hate to have given up for nothing, so I can’t do that anymore.” She mentions how she’d asked Jun-pyo whether he would choose friendship or love, and he had answered that he wouldn’t give up either. Ji-hoo smiles a bit at that, because it’s a reminder that Jun-pyo is still committed to being his friend.

Jae-kyung says philosophically that there’s a saying that people generally get as much as they strive for. She and Ji-hoo didn’t get their way because they weren’t ambitious enough — they didn’t exert their wills and backed off. (By the way, it’s not a negative or positive thing to be ambitious in this sense — it just means that Jan-di and Jun-pyo’s True Wuv trumped the other factors.)

Jae-kyung is leaving for New York tomorrow, so she asks him to deliver something to Jan-di — the star-moon necklace. Jae-kyung muses, “You don’t know how much I’d hoped that the JJ stood for Ji-hoo and Jan-di.”

She wishes him luck, and leaves.

Jan-di and Jun-pyo arrive at a villa, which has been lavishly decked out in a romantic display — candles, fancy food, rose petals arranged in a heart configuration. (I believe Jae-kyung has handled the arrangements.) Their initial reaction is to sneak looks at each other uncomfortably, as though embarrassed with the overt romanticism.

But never fear, they get over that soon enough. They sit down to eat, flashing happy smiles at each other every other moment. It’s adorable. Jun-pyo rises to pull Jan-di to her feet for a dance, and Jan-di asks the question I’ve been wondering:

Jan-di: “I’ve been wanting to ask you something… Why me? I’m not pretty, and I don’t have money, a distinguished name, or anything. Why did you like me?”
Jun-pyo: “Because I have all that.”
Jan-di: “What?”
Jun-pyo: “Money, name, looks — I have all that. I don’t need that from you. All you have to be is Geum Jan-di.”

As Jan-di looks through a telescope at the stars, Jun-pyo points out Sirius, known as Orion’s dog (part of the Canis Major constellation) and the brightest star in the night sky. He jokes that it’s like him in that respect, so Jan-di laughs and claims a star for her own. Jun-pyo identifies it as Procyon, the brightest star in Canis Minor.

Jan-di asks how he came to like astronomy, at which he suddenly grows quieter. When he had been younger, his father had sent him a telescope with a card telling him to study the stars, so that they could watch them together later.

Jan-di guesses that his interest stemmed from father-son star-watching dates, but he says no — they never went. Believing that promise, Young Jun-pyo had studied his hardest.

Jun-pyo: “But do you know what I got for Christmas a few years later? A telescope. That’s when I realized that he didn’t send his gifts and cards, but that his secretary did.”

Jan-di senses his hurt, her smile fading in sympathy. But when he asks, “Do you know what my dream is?” she manages to answer lightly: “Going to watch the stars with your son.”

Jun-pyo laughs, “You’re so simple-minded,” before he says solemnly, “To not make promises I won’t keep. Jan-di. I’m sorry for hurting you.” And then, “I love you.”

You know, all the lovey-doveyness is pretty much expected stuff, but the whole thing really brings a smile to my face. I’m just so glad to see everyone looking happy for once (even if the actors, poor things, look visibly exhausted).

This giddy vibe continues the next day, when our happy couple relaxes together. They’re visited by their friends, who are likewise relieved to see that all is well in the land of Jun-di love.

Ji-hoo is glad that Jan-di is once again able to laugh, and tells her so. He also hands over her the lost star-moon necklace, and although it’s crossed his mind that it’s suspicious that Jae-kyung had it all this time, that’s all moot now.

Instead, Jan-di is alarmed that Jae-kyung is about to depart any minute now and rushes off for the airport. Although Jae-kyung more or less steamrollered Jan-di into their friendship, Jan-di has developed an affection for her, and a part of her feels guilty for taking away the man Jae-kyung loved.

They make it just in time to catch Jae-kyung before she boards — who, by the way, is looking around with a heavy heart, as though half-hoping that they would come to see her off even though she purposely didn’t tell them she was leaving.

Jan-di scolds her for trying to go without saying goodbye, and Jae-kyung admits that she doesn’t handle them very well. With some affection, Jun-pyo tells Jae-kyung to take care, and thanks her.

Jae-kyung:”If you two break up, I’m going to feel so wronged I’ll die. So if you want to split up, you have to report to me and get my approval.”

The two ladies hug, Jan-di openly crying and Jae-kyung holding her tears back. She rushes off before she succumbs to tears, and boards the plane.

Once seated, Jae-kyung takes out the shoes she’d found in the Macau airport, which remind her (flashback montage!) of her first encounter with Jun-pyo. She thinks wistfully, “I know this was originally Jan-di’s. But let me have just this one thing. I should have a memory to cherish for myself, shouldn’t I?”

And then, everyone’s back home.

As punishment for the broken engagement, Madam Kang has ordered her men to keep Jun-pyo confined to his room, where he sees the news reports speculating on the uncertain future of Shinhwa’s merger with JK Group.

As for Jan-di, she’s once again homeless, knowing that she’d better get out of Gu Manor ASAP, before Madam Kang acts. Once again, Witch Mom beats Jan-di to the punch, arriving at the restaurant to deliver Jan-di’s luggage.

She is in a high temper, and accuses Jan-di of being even more sneaky than she’d given her credit for, acting innocent and then pulling off a sly move behind everyone’s back. Even for Madam Kang, the accusations are pretty strong, but we see why: she shows Jan-di a newspaper announcing that the merger, like the engagement, is off.

Mama Kang’s voice drips vitriol as she tells Jan-di that she doesn’t realize just how much damage she’s done, or on what scale. She threatens, “It’s best you not expect me to let this go easily. I will make you realize exactly who you messed with, and make sure you regret it to its fullest.”

This scene is interrupted by Grandpa Yoon, who rebukes Madam Kang for going too far. Although I doubt she feels sorry for her actions, Dr. Yoon’s presence has a chastening effect, and Mama Kang bows her head out of respect for him.

And then, her temper is mollified entirely when Dr. Yoon announces that Jan-di’s business is his business because “she’s my grandson’s wife-to-be.” This is news to everyone, including Jan-di, but most of all Madam Kang. Ever the shrewd woman, she contains her surprise, quickly guessing that she need not interfere if Dr. Yoon’s words are true. Perhaps this is one battle she can win without even trying.

Grandpa Yoon brings Jan-di home with him, turning the tables this time by pressuring her into staying. She and Ji-hoo both feel the awkwardness of the setup, but are overridden by Grandpa’s insistence that Jan-di remain with them.

However! I do like this next turn, because Grandpa Yoon sits down with Ji-hoo to explain that Jan-di has nowhere to turn, and he wants to help her. Ji-hoo is about to explain that Jan-di might be uncomfortable here, but Grandpa pre-empts his argument. He says that Jan-di’s presence doesn’t have to mean anything. In fact, he’s opposed to Jan-di and Ji-hoo being together (I don’t think it’s a classist statement, but more that he thinks they’re not suitable together).

Ji-hoo is startled, but smiles to himself — well, that potential problem worked itself out nicely.

Now we see the rest of Yi-jung’s flashback explanation of why he never met up with Eun-jae. She’d handed him a letter and asked him to meet her the next morning, leaving with a hopeful smile.

Yi-jung had walked back inside and put the letter on the counter to read later, but a phone call from his distraught mother had distracted him. He’d grown annoyed at her familiar histrionics and urged her to give up on his father, and when he ended the call and turned to serving his guests tea, his irritation caused him to spill tea on the counter. He’d tossed the papers that had gotten soaked, accidentally including Eun-jae’s unopened letter with the pile.

Mr. Jung approaches Jan-di with a puzzling request, which Jan-di accepts sympathetically, happy to oblige. This is a favor he asks of her personally, which has nothing to do with Madam Kang or Jun-pyo — he’d like her to act as companion for a man in a coma. He’ll pay her for her sitting with the man and talking to him occasionally, as a part-time job.

The man is described merely as someone “like family” to him. Jan-di is unsure why he’d ask this of her, but Mr. Jung explains that what the man needs is a warm spirit, and she’s the warmest person he knows.

Jun-pyo hears from Mr. Jung that Jan-di’s staying with Ji-hoo, and while that’s not an ideal resolution, he understands that it’s the safest place for her at the moment. He texts Ji-hoo (on Mr. Jung’s phone, since his has been confiscated): “I’m relieved that she’s staying at your house.”

Ji-hoo, however, can’t shake an ominous feeling. After reading the message, Ji-hoo wonders aloud in his empty house, “Jun-pyo, then why am I feeling so uneasy? I feel afraid.”

As Jun-pyo is currently under house arrest, he’s cut off from the outside world, and namely Jan-di. Woo-bin runs into her at school, and sighs over the rough patch they’re all going through right now — Yi-jung is still unable to use his right arm, and Jun-pyo’s locked up. Perhaps he’s even referencing the actors’ real-life haggard expressions, because he points to himself and says his face is suffering from all the worry.

Still, Woo-bin assures Jan-di not to worry too much about Jun-pyo. He tells her to hang in there, and also thanks her for helping Ji-hoo: “I’ve never seen him looking as relaxed as he has these days. Thanks to you, he found his grandfather.”

Jan-di approaches her new companion position with enthusiasm, caring for the unconscious man and reading aloud to him. One particular passage strikes a chord in her:

Jan-di: “The most unfortunate encounters are like those with fish bones. The longer the encounter, the more the fishy smell sticks with you. The encounters to be most careful with are with an open bloom, because while it’s open it brings cheers of joy, but as it wilts, it gets thrown away. The most beautiful encounters are like those with handkerchiefs. They wipe away your sweat when you are tired, and your tears when you are sad.”

That last example makes her think of Ji-hoo (flashback montage!), who’d always been there for her in her times of need, whether to lend her support or wipe away her tears. Jan-di smiles at her patient, saying she hopes to be a handkerchief type of person for him, too — and Mr. Jung watches from the doorway, pleased.

This scene is a bit random, but at this point I’m just rollin’ with it. Jan-di struggles to cut her bangs satisfactorily, which is when Ji-hoo walks by and offers his assistance. Naturally he is a master of this skill — ain’t nothing he can’t do, is there? — and he finishes the job successfully.

Jan-di returns the favor by volunteering to help wash his car (which, of course, eventually degenerates into a water fight).

Afterwards, they sit outside and relax, while Ji-hoo reads from a book of poetry. One poem catches his attention, and he starts to read aloud: “I wanted to tell you…”

He pauses there, hesitating for a long moment, trying to decide whether to continue. Finally he decides to go for it, and keeps reading: “…that I love you. I wanted to shout it aloud. That’s all.”

But when he looks over to see Jan-di’s reaction, he sighs because she’s fallen asleep and therefore hasn’t registered his indirect confession.

Meanwhile, Ga-eul is busy with a new project, spurred by her last encounter with Yi-jung. It looks like his cast is off, but for whatever reason, he hasn’t regained the use of his arm. (I’m guessing that it’s a case of paralysis stemming from a psychological block, rather than a medical reason.)

He’s packing away his pottery items; she thinks it’s cowardly of him to quit so easily. He says in a dull monotone, “It doesn’t matter anymore.” She fires back, “It matters to me!” Ga-eul recites his own words back to him, harking back to his analogy likening a person’s heart to the clay-firing process. The clay, like people’s life experiences, is supposed to be strengthened by the fire.

He dismisses it, saying, “I must’ve been talking crap.” Ga-eul isn’t willing to give up on him, though, and announces her intention to return to him the use of his paralyzed hand. In pursuit of that goal — like I said, it must have a psychological basis — over the next several nights, Ga-eul spends all her time going from building (apartment?) to building, working to the point of exhaustion.

Woo-bin and Jun-pyo put their heads (and fists) together to devise a plan to slip away from his bodyguards. Jun-pyo heads out, feigning a careless attitude when he tells the bodyguards he doesn’t care if they follow him — he’s just going to be hanging out with Woo-bin.

Of course they follow, trailing Woo-bin’s car on the road. They don’t count on Woo-bin’s mafia underlings cutting in out of nowhere, however, and find it impossible to continue their pursuit.

And so, Jun-pyo earns an afternoon of freedom, and calls Jan-di out for a date. Unfortunately, she’s just assured a mother at the clinic that she’ll watch her young boy for the afternoon, and finds herself in a bind.

Her compromise: she brings the boy along on the date. Jun-pyo is surprised (“What is that thing?”) and disgruntled that their precious time together is going to be usurped by this kid, and it’s adorable to see him try to deal with being left out. He pushes the boy aside a few times, wriggling his way between Jan-di and the kid to claim her attention (which is all done in fun).

Eventually, he warms up to the boy as they spend the afternoon at the zoo.

COMMENTS

First of all, it’s worth pointing out that the scenery in recent episodes has been really beautiful. Perhaps this is one marked benefit of making a drama with unknown actors (or little-knowns) — you save money on acting fees to spend on location shoots, like in Macau, New Caledonia, and Jeju Island.

Often, a drama will boast of its foreign location shoots, but I find that many times those segments are pretty unremarkable — they seem either superfluous (and have no impact on the story), or the locations don’t look that different and are therefore wasted. Not so here, where the location shoots add to the rich, luxury-world feel of these characters’ worlds. (There’s nothing more laughable than seeing a drama depict mega-rich characters when everything actually looks quite shabby, right?)

I don’t have huge complaints with Jae-kyung’s exit from the drama, if only because I’m so glad she’s gone! I should be satisfied with that and not look the gift horse in the mouth, so to speak.

But maybe I’ll peek a little, because I do have one main issue in this episode, and it’s the way Jae-kyung shoulders the responsibility for Jan-di and Jun-pyo’s continued romance. Let me make clear that I totally get that in the manga, Shigeru is the one who stops the wedding to spare Doumyouji the consequences of backing out himself. However, here the lead-up has been different, and therefore the way this unfolds puts a different spin on events, and it’s one I don’t like.

Without making further comparisons to Hana Yori Dango, I think it’s problematic (or just frustrating) that Jae-kyung’s actions are the reason Jun-di get back together. Jan-di had her chance to tell Jun-pyo not to get married — the least provocation would have been enough to get him back — but she didn’t. Yes, she was kidnapped so who knows if she would have acted eventually, but I’m putting my money on no. She would have sat back and let her Grand Love marry someone else, and then moped for the rest of her life about it like some whiny martyr.

Jun-pyo, to his credit, tried harder, and I’m not sure you can blame him for walking down that aisle after Jan-di failed to respond to his last-ditch plea. Furthermore, I think there’s a good chance that if Jae-kyung hadn’t spoken up, he may have found himself unable to take his vows. Fortunately for him, he didn’t have to find out, thanks to Jae-kyung.

And lastly, I know a lot of people are dissatisfied with Jae-kyung the character. I agree that her arc was waaaay too long, and she never should have been given such a huge presence on the show. I’d have preferred some of the other guest players to be given a longer run (Haje, for example) and hers a much shorter one, to feel more balanced overall.

But, in her defense, I think that the actress Lee Min-jung probably played this character as well as she could be played. In the hands of anyone else, I think Jae-kyung would have been even worse, and supremely irritating instead of just mildly so. Thanks to her bright effervescence, Jae-kyung came off as flawed and human — and yes, very selfish — but she also had some depth, which I appreciated.

Still, thank goodness that’s finally over! I was afraid I’d be burnt out on this drama at this point, but thankfully I’m finding myself catching a second (or third?) wind in this last stretch. I’m staunchly spoiler-free (which is becoming SO FREAKING HARD to do these days, curses be to the Internet!), so I’m only speculating when I predict we’ll probably have one big storyline and perhaps a minor one left in the remainder. Bring it on!

I'm still mad at Jan Di for not trying to stop the wedding and her stupid attitude...I don't think either that she deserves Jun Pyo...at the end Jea-kyun acted more mature and responsible...now I regret she's out! jajaja

The horse...my God...that was a BIG TIME UPS!!!! and the scene was VERY BAD filmed and acted...TERRIBLE! super unnecesary! They could talk at the hotel...anyways...

The blanket...is it the ONLY kind of blankets sold in Korea? The have budget to ship the cars to Jeju but not for buying another blanket? cheap cheap! jajaja

What I've been loving is the way Ga Eul is working out her "relationship" with Mr Handsome (I call him like this), she's been patience and letting him know that she's there for him either as a friend or anything else. I TOTALY LOVED the advances when she tells him that he has to erase that misconception that good girls only wants good boys...LOVE IT!!!! because that's so freaking true and guys tends to "think" (like they can think jajaja) for us! Can't hardly wait to see tonight episode!

I'm also kind of sad that this is about to end, your recaps are even better than the episodes...what am I going to read at work to relax??

I'm just glad that it's almost over.
The only thing I'll miss is "ALLLMMMMMOOOOOOOOSSSSTTTTT PARADISE!"
Because that thing will forever be stuck in my head.
BOF has changed my perception of HYD (the manga)I use to believe that every adaptation can go without fail.

Like always great recap....I can't wait to read what u thought about today's episode....but first my take on ep. 22 I though it was a very solid episode that is leading us to a great Finale ( I hope) however, there we some stuff that like many people already commented made me go What Just Happen???? but its a teen drama so I just let it slide...
Jandi kill me when she didn't said anything back to JP....but I guess she was mad at herself and at him....JP should have the caourage to stanp up to his evil mother.....but then evil mom had to send that picture w/ the message that was just PLAIN dirty.....
"Monkey Girl" I sooooooooooHAppy she is gone....wow she finally realized that by being selfish she was go to ruin her life.....but she kind of reedemed herself at the end....(Great scene between her and Jihoo, even though she did all the talking)
Now was up with the akward dacing between JD and JP he is not even holding her close...girl put your hand around your man jeezzz you almost lost him....but I love the conversation when they were watching the stars.....it really shows that JP had a very lonely childhood and lacked love...in some ways he still a kid....JD loves that about him....now the question people are wondering they did "It" yes or no...I leave it up to the imagination.....come on they are not married so that mean that the PD won't show them cuddling in bed together like in Goon!!!!! but they were sure "beaming" next morning ahahahah
JP dad would come out of coma and set mama kang straight and I belive there a story behind her ruthless behavior....comments SHE HAS CHANGED.....may be she sees herself in JD (younger version) interesting....
overall great JUNDI moments.....

Am I the only one who's wondering why JP has never explained why he treated Jandi in such an ungly way in Macau? Isn't there anything they should clarify?
He has been really mean.

But by the way, they hardly ever talk at all and if they talk then it's usually JP.
To me their realationship looks rather artificial. Even when they kiss I have to ask myself if the actors don't like each other; or what's the reason for the missing passion. (Too young an audience? Too early airing time?)

No you are not the only one wondering that. Of course us audience know why he called her a stain but Jan di doesn't. For a character who is supposed to have pride, she really doesn't have even a smidgen of self respect if she can accept a guy who ignored her for six months, called her a stain, then ignored and pursued her according to his convenience with a fiance in tow. Not to mention the person who relentlessly bullied her in the beginning. If you really look at it, JP has done nothing to earn her love.

Thank you for the recap,
I also wondered why JD looked mad instead of torn. At first I agreed with you, but then I realized that she was mad because JP was kinda dumping the responsibility on her. Not just because she wants him to choose, JP has a VERY tough decision to make. But when he asks JD to tell him what to do, it's like he's giving her all of that responsibility. I would be pretty mad too.

and one thing I gotta disagree with is that JP did not work harder to keep the relationship. Neither JD or JP were really at the position to fight for their love. How can JD fight for their love when so much is at stake? And how is JP supposed to fight for love when he is supposed to be looking out for the interest of 700,000 people? JD knows that, and therefore she cannot and will not as khim to give all that up just for her. That's unlike JD, she would never ask JP to choose her over 700,000 people. The only person that can make that decision is JP himself. Sorry for saying this, but saying that JP deserved it more because he "might have done something" is not a valid reason, just like how you said JD might have said something if she was not kidnapped.

That is true but the real question here is how are those 700,000 people being affected if JP chooses to be with JD? It is because Madam Kang cruelly trapped JP in that position. She announced their engagement and subsequent merger without JP's consent unequivocally tying JP's personal life with the company's. JK made that situation worse by using the merger as a leverage to push up their wedding in the last episode. The writers made the mother and the fiance character waaaay meaner and vicious than they were supposed to be. Still if they wanted to save the series, they could have made JP figure out of a way to secure the merger without going through with the marriage. The Japanese drama did this.

i totally have to comment on the GE and YJ cuz i just adore that couple!!!! like seriously i think i personally watch the episode so i can see their relationship develop. i just want YJ to admit he love GE already but then where is the fun is that?
OMG WB FINALLY has an actual scene in this episode but its still sad that he doesnt have any love relationship in the drama :(
Jihoo's grandpa is so cute. i thought it was really funny to see him wink and all that good stuff
and the person in the sick bed i think it might be junpyo's dad or something. he must be a very important person so i cant wait til they reveal who it is! he seem like the solution for junpyo and jandi to fight the mother witch hahaha.

I really did think that Jan-di would have said something in response to Jun-pyo's plea. Even if it were not to say 'stop, don't go' ... at least maybe 'why should I tell you not to go when all you have done is pushed me away?'. I dunno, something along those lines. But boy was I giddy when Jun-pyo was leaping down towards the boat. YAY! Jun-di is back!

But the whole dancing scene wasn't convincing. She seemed happier (?!) with Ji-hoo in ep 3. And the kiss... was it really a kiss? Was it too rushed? Where was the normal kdrama build-up? Argh... wasted kiss. But it gets me every time! :p

As I scroll through your re-cap to look for Jun-di moments, I realise that there aren't many. Why is that? Why is it that the 'other' stories dominate so much more of the episode time? Why can't we get more Jun-di happy moments without them sharing it with their friends? Is it too much to ask? :p

I take comfort in the fact that I had predicted that Jun-pyo's dad wasn't dead and that he would be the person to override Madam Kang and her objection against Jun-di. In true kdrama style, he will find warmth in Jan-di and 'wake up', all well again, and she will be the person that brings the whole family together again (just like in Goong).... cos ya know ... it's all about the family in kdramas

THANK YOU!!!! I cannot stand that Jandi is so damn weak! At least I hope she's weak it's better than just letting your love go for no reason. That is the only thing that bugged me throughout episode 22 and 23. She's always the first to back out but never the first to step up, I mean come on the love of your life is about to get married??? I thought this would change in the last few episodes but nope. Hopefully by episode 25 there's a change in her =[. Also, instead of spending more time emphasizing the JH+Jd JP+JK relationships for such a huge chunk of the show and avoiding the main couple, I would think It might of been an intersteing turn of events if they showed a little JH+JK thing. Just a thought, idk how it would of worked out, but it would be interesting considering there rarely is anything like that( if any) in other dramas and certainly not in the other HYD versions.

P.S. Anyone else the family thing at the zoo and when Jandi said Junpyo wanted to go star-seeing with his son a hint at them having kids in the end? hmm =].

I don't think Jd was weak when she went all the way to Macau after six months of being ignored. Does anyone remember she was called a stain then? Since then she has faced countless problems - being homeless and slut shamed among them. But she was still supposed to ask JP to not get married? When has JP shown to her that he can take care of her? He simply stands dumbly everytime MK comes face to face with JD

Well, it's interesting you mentioned how Jandi could have come up with a better response to Junpyo's question before his ceremony, because I actually sided with her completely. Junpyo put her through so much suffering (and yes, it may have been because of his mother's extortionist ways, but he still made Jandi think he had lost his feelings for her). And then, the day of his wedding, he acted like a coward. If Jandi had told him not to go, would he have stayed behind? Probably not. His mother still has a hold over him, after all.

But like I said, you raise a very interesting point. Thank you for the recaps--my Korean is not as fluent, so I try to fill in the gaps with what you write :)

To me, it was only natural that Jaekyung be the solution to their problems. If you put yourself in Jandi's shoes, would you really make the person you love leave everything else behind just to be with you....that would be a very selfish love indeed....

As for Junpyo, well, we all know his character to be a bit weak and childish and I think he was as strong as he could be....not that I'm criticizing him at all. Same as being in Jandi's shoes, it is a devastating situation to be in to have to choose between family and someone you love. I would have chosen family...but that is a personal viewpoint.

first of all, your recaps are amazing and complete mylife! I have to say though I disagree about jandi's reaction when jun pyo asks her to tell him to stop the marriage. She SHOULD be pissed because 1) he is being a coward, he can't stop the marriage at his own will, he needs someone to ORDER for him to stop 2) he is putting an enormous burden on jandi- it is up to her to break the marriage and hurt jk's and kang's future plans. OK I'm in Jun-di's boat but I have some issues;

1) over-unnecessary Ji-di or Hoo-Jan or Hoo-di moments.. gah I feel that they wasted my time watching this ahhh my eyes! Give me more LMH... hahahaha

2) The moment that they are reunited I was like... WHAT?! Just like that... so easy ah?! After what they've been through? I wish that they would build up the moment and put some line in between... Sorry my fantasy would be like this... just to share hehehe

Jandi being kidnapped is unconscious and saved by Chen (Jaekyoung's spunky bodyguard) and being brought to the yacht and then she wakes up only to find Junpyo standing over watching her.
Jandi : Gu Junpyo??? Am I dreaming?
Junpyo : ....
Silently smiling and slowly walk towards her and hug her tightly. Jandi sensing that this wasn't a dream, shed a tear a bit...

Now that's more like it. right?

3) Dancing or stargazing... Please have more ideas than just dancing, I didn't find it romantic at all, I was like when are they going to kiss already?? Hahhaahha and when they finally did while stargazing I was happy a bit but wish that they added few more lines between.... My fantasy?? hehehehe I'll keep it to myself... its X-rated hahahaha

Bye bye Jae Kyung! I really do like the actress and i even liked the character too but the storyline dragged way too long and it was defintiely time fore her departure. Glad that we can move on now.

Yes, i agree that their getting back together was just a little too easy and to some extent i'm still on the JoonDi boat....just better suited i feel!

All in all though, whatever happens, it was another great re-cap Javabeans! Thanks very much!

But the writing has to SHOW this, we shouldn't have to assume just because we know what's going to happen based on the manga/previous versions. (and what about the first-time viewers utterly unfamiliar with the HYD plot?)

I'm aware that Ga Eul has to go through all this seemingly fruitless, difficult searching for the gesture to be meaningful. But the way BBF went about it, having Eun Jae herself tell the details of the story and Yi Jung not reading the letter at all--unlike MG/HYD where it was Xi Men/Soujiro who did, hence them NOT knowing/remembering WHICH building it was--made it illogical since Ga Eul could have easily asked Eun Jae where it was.

Anyhoo, I'm just hoping for a happier SoEul ending this 3rd time around. :)

This one wishes Jun-Pyo had married that annoying twit Jae-Kyung and it could all be over with. Honestly the plot in the last month of episodes has been extremely shaky and random. I find myself not caring about any of the characters anymore which is a sure sign this one has failed for me. I'll watch til the end cause we are so close to it, but this one doesn't live up to the Japanese version of Hana Yori Dango..... even if some of the actors are more attractive.

If you didn't point out the noticeable exhaustion of the actors specially Jan-di, i would have said that Jan-di is looking more older than Jun-pyo. The poor thing, all of this after the accident.

I think i kinda understand why Jan-di seems like a bitch to Jun-pyo before the wedding. I think she wants Jun-pyo to decide for both of them and be a responsible man. Don't you think so?

Most of the stuff has been said - like how difficult it was to watch the 'reunion' of the JunDi couple. Am sorry to say but Jandi is beginning to annoy me. Esp when she is trying to be 'cute' to coma man in the beginning. #60 ozchick - definitely with you about Jandi - what happened to the Jandi in the earlier eps? and yes, I will miss JK but again, you got it right - she has overstayed her welcome.

Thanks for letting us download the song. i love love listening to it i don't understand the lyrics but reading yer translation and feeling the emotions of the singer makes me n'sync with it.

As for this episode, amidst the flaws and inconsistencies, i enjoyed...still enjoyed watching it. My fave scene is definitely the one with President Grandpa and Jihoo and Jandi; how grandpa would like to take jahndi for her grandaughter. *i love love unrequitted love, I love love how Jihoo tried to suppress his feelings for Jahndi. But something crossed my mind, a what if, I swear if it was Jang Geun Suk who played the role of Jihoo my heart would be soooo torn into pieces*

- She looked pissed coz JP's trying to run away [from his obligation of marrying JK] by doing something that can harm him. Who would not be pissed by that method anyway? Jan Di's right, If he run away like this, there's a possiblity that it can happen AGAIN someday. And she was talking about the future which involves their relationship. There's a lot of 'What ifs..' on Jan Di's expression there, she was pissed because she doesn't want to see JP doing that, she needs to see a mature approach from JP.
- Also...Jan Di's not pissed with JP constantly asking her to stop him from marrying JK instead, there's actually a mixed emotion of Jan Di here. From the moment she stepped her foot on Jeju Island, we could see how Jan Di tried her best to put a smile on her face. Let's consider the facts around. JK, Mama Kang, Geum Dad/Mom/Brother...everything, it's hard to be on Jan Di's position. She want JP but there are a lot of complications. She doesn't want him to marry JK but what else she can she do? We can always say, 'Bring back the Jan Di that we know...'blah blah...that's not the plot of the drama anymore BOF Fans. Let';s try to understand this...The Jan Di from Episode 1-5 was a School girl, loves to scream if she's bothered and also a fighter. Any person in this world, experiencing the same dillemma would change their perspective in life as time passes by, and Jan Di is no exception. She became involved with Goo Jun Pyo, the Shinhwa Heir, and his mom tried so many methods to put her away. If you're in the position, would you be doing things that could complicate both your family and JP? Think about that BOF Fans. let's all be mature commenting on this drama. *peace*

- Yup I agree on this one, and then there's this coma thing coming in the next episodes wherein another girl would interrupt Jun-Di's love story...Why would they exert so much effort putting another head for Jun Pyo, wherein they can try to give Jan Di a highlight about having another guy rather than using Ji Hoo all along, which we all know that Jan Di's attention for Ji Hoo is NOT LOVE ANYMORE. Kinda like in Meteor Garden, Dao Ming Si was threatened by the appearance of his long lost fake cousin who is paid by Ah Si's mom to messed up the relationship of Cai-Si but turns out that the fake cousin falls in love with Shan Cai and suddenly didn't want the money from Mama Dao. This makes it hard for Ah Si to really show how much love he can give for Shan Cai. He can clearly see that a commoner fake cousin is more suitable for her. On the other hand, Shan Cai kept thinking about the fact about going out with a commoner rather than the rich Dao ming Si. But the exciting part is how they both fought for their love in the later part of the episodes, which really makes sense.
- ..but the character of JK was the superwoman slash martyr type, its clear that she was inserted in the drama..(1) to get in between Jun-Di and (2) to brought them closer and to make them both realize how they love each other. See how the scenes changed the persona of Jun-Di? On the first EP's, both of them are in denial of their love. But on the last 8 episodes, they're both expressive and much appreciative. Actually JK's character balances the romance between Jun-Di. Somehow it confuses most of us about JK's attitude being similar with JP but the outcome of the story doesn't circle around being with somebody similar with the lead's attitude. it's always the oppposite. That's what I noticed on a lot of Asian series particularly Taiwanese and Koreans.

With Ga-Eul and Yi Jung
- I was so tired watching over the first love story of Yi Jung. Can't they fast foward it if Ga-Eul will be Yi-Jung's interest too? the episodes are nearly ending and the two are still struggling from wether they'll be together or what. I actually wanted to see their love story bloom. I had enough of Ga-Eul's sacrifices to show how she love Yi-Jung. But Yi-Jung is sooo dramatic, the story between them are still vague and that it's really senseless and tiresome already. Wherever the scene is about them, I'm forwarding it to JP-JD hehehehe...

...so that's my point. My own personal opinion. Thanks!

The main heroine's assertiveness, strong convictions and confidence has always been the main theme of this particular story in any versions. But they stopped doing justice to it after episode 2. Financially there is nothing Jan di can do against a person like Madam Kang but still she can make a stand at several places instead of standing dumbfounded and following around any girl who comes along and calls her 'dongsaeng'. In the original manga, the stand Makino makes is something to behold. When Japanese Madam Kang slaps her, she even slaps her back. This is the kind of story BOF was supposed to be. I was extremely disappointed with Jan di's characterization

This is the first episode where I wanted to stop watching. Just turn it off and not watch any episodes after this.

I really really hate how the wedding/its calling off was handled. JP is completely spineless and selfish and I've gone from being pro JD+JH to simply anti JD+JP, almost regardless of what happens concerning JH.

I don't think JD not asking JP not to marry JK was bad at all - she came off as pissed and I would have been too. When is JP going to sacrifice anything for her?! It's so frustrating! Look at everything JD has lost due to their 'relationship' - family, home, financially, a fair amount of dignity, etc etc. And JP? He has given up NOTHING.

You praise him for his 'devotion'? What devotion? Simply flirting with someone and -saying- you love them means nothing. Anyone can SAY they love another person - I want to see genuine evidence of him ACTUALLY loving her. I want him to do something, anything really. Had JK not called off the wedding, I really think he'd have gone through with it and married her - even if JP's mum hadn't taken JD hostage. Give JD crap for not begging him to not get married? Psha. JP needs to find some freaking guts and fight for himself.

I tried to keep an open mind, knowing we're heading into a JP+JD pairing, but the writers are making that impossible for me. Their relationship is too shallow for me. I know it's HYD, but that just makes it worse. I already have expectations for a ridiculous, unbelievable and shallow relationship that I'll enjoy with fantastic guilty pleasure anyways, but this is too shallow even for that.

I could watch episode 23 right now, but I'll put that off for the moment. I want to know what will happen with GE and YJ, as well as if JH is going to get his own spine and actually profess his love to JD. But mostly I wish JP would have gotten on the plane with JK and gone far, far away so I don't have to shake my fist at his pathetically insincere character again. His face may be gorgeous, but that's not enough to save JP anymore.

I agree with everything that you said about JP but I do not agree with your interpretation of the original Hana yori dango. It is not a shallow story. Infact it is a story where a person who has everything falls in love with a girl who is not of his social status but is a very genuine person- a trait missing in his life. Domyouji too was abusive at times but at others he has been very devoted to Makino. Take the birthday party for example where he introduces Makino as the most important woman in his life, for the world to see. He tells his mother straight- that he does not care for her financial condition. HYD is filled with moments like these. This is what makes the central couple stand out. BOF on the other hand has a very shallow representation of this story. The leads barely have any meaningful/bonding moments between them.

I am really hating Jan Di here. When JP asks her if she's okay with him getting married, she should have offered some kind of support for JP's predicament. But No, she did NOTHING. I hate it when lead girls decide things for the guy which they think will be best for them. That's not supposed to be. If you really love somebody, you want them to be happy. Sometimes what's best is not what makes us happy.

On the other hand, I like Jae Kyung very much. I felt she has the spunk that is missing from Jan Di, which ironically is the trait that made JP fall for her. Her last sacrifice to let JP go, to make him be with Jan Di...that's LOVE. She and JiHoo are one and the same..they are both selfless.

I love this drama so much. I watched Meteor Garden and HYD too. I just didn't get to feel the chemistry with Jan Di and Jun Pyo. It is a very criticial element that's been missing from the start until now. It's funny since I love Jun Pyo so much and the only thing that keeps me glued to their love story is his undying love for jan Di. I saw the chemistry with JiHoo and Jan Di though. Too bad, they won't end up together.

You think Jae Kyung sacrificed everything? Then do you remember that JK is the reason why their wedding was preponed in the first place? That she was in the room when MK blackmailed JP with JD's life to make him go along with him? JK cannot sacrifice something she did not have in the first place. JP always made it clear he did not like her but JK was only interested in possessing him even if it destroyed him. What you call 'sacrifice' is actually her realizing that there is no point in marrying someone who is standing at the altar because his real lover has been kidnapped.
Jan di has gone through A LOT for JP's sake with JP doing almost nothing to improve the situation. The previous episodes are proof enough. The most important one is when he ignored her for six months and then called her a 'stain' when she went to see him

i really believe that the man in a coma that Jandi was caring for is Junpyo's dad. i saw the last episode of the "first" season where Junpyo leaves for macau and i saw the part where people were taking the newspapers reading about the dad being in his death bed. there is a picture of Junpyo's dad on the newspapers and it's definitely the man in a coma!

i'm really curious how they're gonna wrap up everything, plus another major storyline and a couple of mini storylines in just two episodes. but then again, the pacing was really fast so i'm sure they'll find a way.

i think no matter what country does a HYD version, there's always going to be an overwhelming preference for the Hanazawa Rui character, even for those devoted Tsukasa-Makino shippers. I kinda think it's just built into the charcter, how he's always on the losing end despite, to be honest, being what every girl could want in a Prince Charming so to speak. Cuz really, what does Tsukasa have that Rui doesn't besides a loud voice? It's just that Rui's love for his friends is just as strong as his romantic love, which I don't think is a weakness.

Blathering aside, gotta give props to Kim HyunJoong for his acting in this. Yeah, it was a bit rocky ...ok a lot rocky...at certain points, but I think he has the dreamy, hidden sorrow but gentle portion down pat. CONGRAT JOONG-OPPA!!

that's what i thought too. Shigeru was also the heroine in HYD but it didn't come to the point of the exact wedding itself, that's why i think Domyouji and Makino were saved (a little) from the blame of not doing anything (because it was still early). but in this case Jun Pyo and Jae Kyung were already at the altar. and it was frustrating, nerve-racking and disappointing to see neither Jun Pyo nor Jan Di stay passive. we wouldn't have found out "up to where are they willing to go" as Jun Hee says.

Yeah that is true. Domyouji and Shigeru were still in courtship phase when Shigeru calls it off in the manga and in the live version Domyouji challenges her before the meeting. It is one of my favourite scenes. Shigeru says that his family needs this deal but Domyouji says he will take her on. That is called standing up for your girl.

I think you are mistaken about the manga. Because in the manga, Shigeru breaks of the engagement right after Tsukushi almost drowns, but that time Rui actually saves her. And Shigeru is not annoying at all in the later volumes. I think the problem with this is they are influenced by Japanese HYD

I respect everyone's opinion on here, but I do feel that Jun Pyo has taken risks for Jandi. Many people are asking why did he fall in love with her? He was captivated by the fact that Jandi spoke up to him because for one she showed him how strong she was and two because other then his sister, Jandi was the one to stand up to him. I myself have grown tired of how Jandi always lets people bring her down while, she always gets angry with Jun Pyo. I couldn't understand why throughout the whole drama. Anyways, I feel that Jun Pyo has tried to fight for her but you can't fight for someone who's not willing to fight for you. (That's my take on that)!

Jan di did fight for him. She waited for him for six months and then went all the way to Macau only to be ignored and be called a stain. Ofcourse we know that all that was for her protection but after that JP never really did anything for her. He kept stringing along JK while he was flirting with JD.

If I rewrite that last scene from chapter 21 I would make it like this:

Jan-di: Don’t ask me to do that? It’s not my place to decide. (Coldly, but with tears in her eyes)

--The episode ends.

First scene from chapter 22:

Jan-di: Don’t ask me to do that? It’s not my place to decide. (Coldly, but with tears in her eyes)

Jun-Pyo: Why? Don’t you love me? Don't you want to be with me? (Shocked by the answer)

Jan-di: I love you with all my heart! I just don’t want the burden of your pain!

Jun-Pyo: What burden? What pain? (Confuse)

Jan-di: The regret! Your regret. Either you choose to get married or left everything behind; it’s a decision you have to make on your own. I don't want you, in the future, blaming me, for your decision. In the path you choose, I will be happy. (Crying, trying to convincing herself)

Do you? (Crying)

Jan-di: At least I try, and I wouldn’t live without the regret of what could be, this is where it starts, or where it ends! Remember after you choose, there's no coming back! (She leaves without saying anything else)

Jun-Pyo: Can't believe what he just heard, and falls to the floor to mourn.

That's how I will do the scenes, God, I wish so badly I'm a writer!
