[Work, life, balance, and K-dramas] Growing apart in taste, closer in marriage

Because This Life Is Our First

By @RenOishi

My husband and I will be celebrating our twelfth wedding anniversary this year. We met in primary school, at age nine, and were each other’s first love. We married young, 23 years young, and both still at university when we convinced our conservative South Asian parents that it was meant to be. So, we tied the knot and flew to the other side of the world to start our brand-new lives together.

The first seven years of our married life were filled with new adventures, financial hardship, takeaway pizzas, and long evenings cozied up next to our small TV watching movies and shows together. Our tastes were the same: Asian horror movies, sci-fi, Lost, Breaking Bad, and Dexter to name a few. We were never apart. Not even for a night.

Year eight saw the arrival of the sweetest, most beautiful baby boy you had ever seen (maybe I am a bit biased!?). He easily took up the shared space between us on our couch for TV watching. We adopted two cats from the streets and our little family was complete.

Because This Life Is Our First

It was one fine day that same year while on maternity leave that I decided to give K-dramas a go. We were already fans of Korean movies and so I thought dramas wouldn’t be that bad. So, I Googled a bit and watched Fated To Love You on YouTube — all episodes in three days!

My husband noticed my new obsession when he saw I was embracing all ways possible to get out of our shared TV watching time on our couch for the night — baby needs rest, cat poop has to be cleaned, I am tired — to watch my new secret obsession, in secret. I knew the dramas wouldn’t be his taste and I was utterly embarrassed for liking something so girly and fluffy for the very first time! A tomboy in my own right, my younger days were spent picking non-girly stuff and sneering at anything pink and fluffy. I knew this new obsession was clearly off the mark for me. But I couldn’t stop!

Very soon I discovered DramaFever. DramaFever on my phone, DramaFever on my work laptop, DramaFever on the bus, the passenger seat of a car, on the toilet, while eating, at the park! I was unstoppable! And I was not ashamed anymore!

I dreaded going back to work after my maternity leave was over. When would I get time to watch? What happens if I miss a new episode? How can I juggle a baby, work, household chores, and my obsession at the same time? We were better off financially by then, so it was a relief when I was able to get back to work part-time. At work I missed my little boy, so much that my heart ached, but as soon as I picked him up from daycare, bathed him, and gave him his dinner, we were back again curled up in front of our TV watching dramas together while I verbalized to my toddler son what I was seeing onscreen and he happily babbled in return. It became our own routine while we waited for his dad to return home from work.

As for my dear husband, he teased me relentlessly for my new “crack,” but managed to give me some time of my own to unwind in my own way, while he found something else he loved to do: read. We still watched our shows together and still had our time, but we both compromised to accommodate my everlasting love of K-drama and his newfound love of reading.

For our eighth anniversary he bought us a brand new big TV. For our ninth, a VPN subscription and Netflix. For our tenth, a subscription to Viki, among other things. Our nighttime routine is still the same. Us on the couch, me unwinding with my dramas and him reading, our 4-year-old on his iPad learning the alphabet, our two cats purring on either side, and my husband and I holding hands.

Loved your write up. I can completely relate to this. I had also not told my husband about this new kdrama addiction. I would watch dramas day in and out.. Now that my husband knows about it, he teases me. I can now almost understand Korean. On our last trip to Hong Kong, we saw many Koreans. He would make me eavesdrop on their conversations just to test my Korean language skills :)

Aww thank you for liking it! Sometimes my husband tests me to find out if I know the Korean word for an English word that he is thinking. 6 out of 10 I can say it even though he has no way to find out if I am telling the truth 😂

This post is the sweetest one. Your journey sounds so romantic being each other first love. (I always love school love stories turning into happily ever after)
Your family sounds so cute and I'm happy that your husband gave you space for your new found love and you're not embarrassed of the stuffs now which you didn't think of doing. (Though K dramas not always indicates a feminine touch) :D

@coffeprince4eva, thank you for sharing your story!
The choice of gifs was perfect and the image of the three of you on the couch, each doing what you like while your cats do cat things in near vicinity, is blissful.
This is a life partnership... 💕

This is so sweet! I can so relate. I’ve done my share of telling my husband I’m tired and then watching dramas in bed, hehe. And also may have sent the kids to bed earlier than their bedtime a few times for the same purpose 😆

This is so me! There was even a time I was hiding under the covers while watching until 2am with a job that requires me to wake up at 6am, do the school run and drive to work for an hour. The woes of kdrama addiction when you need to be a functioning adult. It is only 2 years later that I have learned "balance and compromise".

Oh! I can relate! Except it was my husband who found kdramas and I was was dragged kicking and screaming into it! But, yes, most evenings will see me curled up in front of the TV, sometimes with him, sometimes not. But kdramas can definitely make a marriage stronger when consumed in a healthy manner, which it sounds like you have figured out! Thanks for sharing your story!

My husband and I got into a (small) fight once because he watched the beginning of next episode during his lunch break without waiting for me. lol.

This is adorable! It’s crazy that you have known each other since you were 9. People are always surprised when I say that my cousin and her husband have been together since the 7th grade, but this is even more precious!

I was also always on the more tomboy side of things, and my brothers never failed to tease me about watching the fluffier Asian dramas, which were the only ones I knew about for quite some time. I will always be grateful for dramas opening my heart to other genres and making me more comfortable with my femininity.

And you have two cats! Your marriage sounds like my dream, and I hope for even more happiness in your future. Thank you for sharing! 💖

I loved this! Your marriage sounds so so sweet! It’ s good that you and your husband have different pastimes (dramas and reading) but you still respect and appreciate each other’s interests. You and your son watching the dramas together even when he can’t really understand what’s going on reminds me of when my mom used to do that with me (or so she says). I grew up to be a kdrama addict like mother, so maybe your son will be the same :) Thank you so much for sharing ❤️❤️

The story of your changing tastes and descent to kdramas are a bit like mine. My husband and I used to spend evenings curled up watching BBC dramas then we moved abroad and it was easier to watch kdramas over BBC programs so I suddenly found myself addicted I would constantly watch "in hiding". He tried to understand what draws me to it when to him they are "all the same" which was the point to me! After moving back to the UK we agreed to watch one documentary together a week and he lets me watch my drama on the phone while he watches on the tv. The little boy is supportive "you can watch korean drama mummy so I can watch youtube!'. All is well.

Glad to know you have all found a balance. We still watch our shows together but compromise when I have to catch up on an episode or he has to read what happens next in the book that he is reading at that time :)

I’m a k-drama fan too, eversince KimSamSoon days, but lately, I’m becoming too picky on what dramas to watch and spend my precious free time to. My husband and I love to watch Something in the rain in Dramafever before going to bed, but I always fall asleep fast and woke up to my husband still watching and finishing an episode until late night.

This was everything. Sometimes I feel bad for liking kdramas so much, that something like tv shows can make me feel happy, sunny and bring some bit of positivity to an otherwise crummy day. I love that you shared your story and not just because oh yayy, we have something in common--but because you showed how you incorporated it into your daily life and that it was very much possible and okay to just be happy with our kdramas and that it doesn't have to mean we sacrifice time with our families or doing other things that are important to us.
