The Matchmakers: Episode 7

Our ever-growing matchmaking crew assembles to put some pesky rumors to rest — and fan the flames of love while they’re at it. And not to be left out of the plotting, our villains also assemble to set their sinister plans in motion.

EPISODE 7

When Jung-woo wakes up from last week’s fainting spell, he comes to the conclusion the rest of us have since arrived at: his chest pain is activated by the sight of young couples. Like the Confucian scholar he is, Jung-woo orders Soon-gu and Sam-soon to sit apart from each other because it is morally unacceptable for single men and women to be that close. But Sam-soon points out that Jung-woo’s chest pain has nothing to do with morals, and everything to do with jealousy because he has no experience with women — and he’ll likely never have any. LMAO! Drag him by his celibate robe!

Sam-soon’s laughter is contagious, and I’m right there giggling with her as Jung-woo writhes in pain (and subsequently passes out again) while she’s all pumped up at the news that Soon-gu is single. Lol. Back to the main reason our crew is gathered, Soon-gu reveals that Minister Park killed the late spinster. And to clear Ha-na’s name, Sam-soon (Hwa-rok) is tasked with coming up with a story about the murder.

Sam-soon might have switched to the murder mystery genre in her writing, but she’s still in need of romance in her life. Hence, she straight up asks Soon-deok to set her up with Soon-gu. Soon-deok is reluctant to proceed with the match, and for a second, I thought she was being biased because it was her brother in question. But it’s precisely because Soon-gu is her brother that Soon-deok knows that he decided never to marry. In the end, Sam-soon’s persistence wins, and Soon-deok agrees to match them because she also wants her stubborn brother to get married.

The Matchmakers: Episode 7

When Sam-soon is done with the story, the crew gathers again. But rather than focus on duplicating the novel into multiple copies for sale, they invent new ways to flirt. Things are mutual between Sam-soon and Soon-gu, but Soon-deok stonewalls all Jung-woo’s attempts to be close — and he ends up thinking she is avoiding him because she’s a peddler and he’s of royal status. “How do I explain that I’m open when it comes to that matter?” he wonders. “I have no prejudice about social class.” Since when? Jung-woo, please!

Our OTP eventually gets some alone time, and Jung-woo asks for Soon-deok’s real name. She’s touched because no one has asked for her name since she became a peddler, and she reveals that she is Soon-deok. She’s also two years older than him, and yay for a noona romance!

Soon-deok knows Jung-woo’s age because everyone knows everything about the king’s son-in-law. And in the same vein, Jung-woo says he wishes to know everything about her. A tender moment passes between them, but Soon-deok snaps them back to reality. What’s the point of knowing everything about her when they’ll never see each other after the matchmaking project is over.

In between the matchmaking project, the crown prince is called back into the palace “on orders of the queen,” but he’s smart enough to realize midway through the journey that something is wrong. He tricks the guards and escapes into the mountains to hide, and when Ha-na happens upon the “lost kid” in the mountains, she helps to divert the guards’ attention. Ha-na also ends up “taking responsibility” for the crown prince by allowing him to spend the night at the Maeng house.

On hearing the news that the crown prince is missing, the king orders the soldiers to begin a search at once. But Ha-na beats them to it and brings the crown prince back to the private residence in one piece. The queen is on hand to receive them, and she’s grateful to Ha-na — who doesn’t recognize the crown prince nor the queen as royalty because they’re not dressed in official robes. On the off chance that she might be helping a traitor, Ha-na asks the queen who they are, but the queen makes up an excuse and Ha-na remains none the wiser.

In the meantime, Lady Park tells her husband to mobilize his private army. If the king orders an investigation into the kidnapping of the crown prince, they’ll have a justification to depose the queen by bringing up the fact that she secretly sent the crown prince to a private residence. With the queen deposed, there’ll be no one to protect the crown prince, and it’s a win-win situation for the faction.

The Matchmakers: Episode 7

Back to our matchmaking crew, they hold a private reading of the novel to a select group of respected women, and Jung-woo — who pretends to be Hwa-rok for the reading — clearly states that the story is based on true events. The story spreads like wildfire, and everyone pieces the clues together. Soon Minister Park faces public condemnation, and Ha-na’s rumor is put to rest.

Public condemnation is not good enough punishment for Minister Park, but Sam-soon is reluctant to take things further for fear that Soon-gu could get in trouble for telling them the truth about the murder. Awwn. Soon-deok tells the crew to leave Minister Park’s punishment to her, and she has Ye-jin show her mother the novel. Lady Park dismisses the story as a rumor, but Ye-jin tells her that she witnessed Minister Park dragging the spinster into his room on the day the lady went missing. Lady Park is outraged, and she orders her brother to step down from his position immediately.

What an interesting character Lady Park is. She doesn’t mind killing the competition to make her nephew the crown prince, but she won’t allow her brother go unpunished after killing an innocent woman. She’s all for the dignity of a noblewoman, but she says nothing when she discovers that Soon-deok sneaks out of the house. She also doesn’t seem to be faking the affection she has for Soon-deok. Lady Park is not your average one-dimensional villainess, that’s for sure.

An angry Minister Park begins investigating how Hwa-rok knew what transpired that night, but our crew is a step ahead with Soon-deok’s plan for Soon-gu to chase Hwa-rok up to a cliff — where she’ll jump from and “die.” Soon-gu refuses to put Sam-soon in harm’s way, and Soon-deok says not to worry because she’ll be disguised as Hwa-rok. She must really have a thing for impersonating others. Heh. As expected, Jung-woo is NOT a fan of Soon-deok’s plan because what if she gets hurt instead? “Gosh, everyone except me is looking out for their love,” Jung-woo’s servant sighs at the back and forth, and lol.

The plan is eventually set in motion, and a masked Hwa-rok is about to jump when Minister Park comes out from nowhere and fires an arrow at Hwa-rok. That bastard! Hwa-rok jumps anyway, and when the mask comes off, he is revealed to be Jung-woo! Not that I’m surprised. As Jung-woo sinks into the river, he thinks to himself: “Looking back, I had already made up my mind then to marry Lady Yeo-ju.” And this is the illegal cliffhanger with which we end the episode. Ugh! Of all the times for KBS to air a single episode, it had to be this week!

Still, the plot is progressing, our favorite couples are running full steam on the romance front, and I’m a happy viewer. One thing I noticed with last week’s lantern festival and this week at the matchmaking den is that the characters can spend an extended period of time at a single location, and I won’t be bored! The writing is entertaining, the characters are quirky, and as a whole, the visuals are so appealing. Overall, it’s been so far, so fun with the first half of the show and I hope the other half stays that way.

This show is a feast for the eyes, the mind and the heart.

I suffer a little, knowing how many hurdles there are left between Jung-woo and Seon-deok…and, in fact, between all of our adorable soon-to-be-married couples (and, perhaps, between our one, oldest “old” maid and her confirmed singlehood?). I am tentatively trusting this show, and these characters, to come through with perhaps something complex but satisfying…but I do perceive some bittersweetness ahead.

Thanks, @unit, for devoting as much time and energy to this one episode as you usually do to two! It surely deserved it.

Your comment had not appeared and I said the same thing below. I really hope there's no romance involving these 2, let's see. I wouldn't mind the age gap if the CP was 24 and she was 26. But him being 12 and her being 24, it's a no no for me

I thought maybe they can end in a relationship without sex, though breeding is very much expected of a crown prince.
But she could be left alone, and honestly, it probably would be okay for him to wait some years and then have another kind of love with a concubine.
I don't think Ha-nae is very interested in sex with neither boys nor men.

I highly suspect Hana will remain single by the end of the drama. Given how the royal family sort of owes her now, I wouldn't be surprised if they decide not to enforce the marriage deadline for her. I wouldn't be surprised though if the prince will seek her out in about 6 years - by which time, he would be an adult and could possibly satisfy her requirements.

Second that. The romantic feels is probably a MacGuffin, set up for trope subversion. Though I totally get why viewers feel that way. It calls to mind the screen reference of Padme & Anakin royalty-commoner romance in SW ep 1 (Natalie Portman 16yo was twice the age of the child actor playing Anakin 8yo IRL).

I am firmly in the camp that this rescue will be later set up as the narrative pay-off / "get out of jail free" card equivalent.

P.S. omg so glad to discover and binge-watch this show over the last 2 days whilst we have a "coitus-interruptus" Ep 8 hiatus!! (yes, I confess to a Rowoon withdrawal after DwY ended and went out prowling for drama dope)

I am immensely enjoying this show and surprised that this is not being talked about much. I hope that it maintains its light heartedness in spite of all the politics even in the second half. I can't wait to see all the love stories unfold.

Anyone else intrigued by the way the Crown prince and oldest Maeng sister were introduced to each other? Them bumping into each other and rolling down a hill together. If it was someone else, I'd have thought there was a definite romance line between those 2, but with the crown prince being so young (he's what, 12 years old?) I am not sure. We have 2 potential story lines there - She gets to meet someone Royal because of how impressed the Queen was with her. Or She gets to hold a senior position in the court and decides not to marry at all. I don't know, I am just not on board with the idea of a romance involving the Crown Prince given his age.

I do think they were playing with both the coupling plot tropes (and even the visual tropes!) to ask us to think along these lines--and certainly, the "rules of Joseon" do not always accord with modern sensibilities. But, I very much doubt this show will do more than push these artistic boundaries. Although, he's a very smart young man!!

More likely--given that they were both our "initial interviewees"--it's that their positioning is offered to us as inverted. He's worried that no one will want to marry him because of his three older sisters (even though he's the Crown Prince and that's the least of his worries!!), and she's worried that people keep wanting to marry her off when her true standards are so high. That is, she wants to be able to respect her husband.

Said more succinctly: He is worried no one will marry him (a future that would be impossible for him), but she is worried that she will have to marry (a future that would be unavoidable for her).

Oh it definitely made me think! It wasn't uncommon for a 12 year old girl to marry a 24 year old man in Joseon, so what shouldn't it be OK for a 12 year old boy to marry a 24 year old lady?! I am super curious to see where this storyline goes.

But yes, I agree with you. I did think about the fact that they were both the ep 7 interviewees and they have the opposite worries when it comes to marriage.

I am totally seated to see how this show will go. There are so many storylines and just thinking about all the hurdles all the couples have to cross to get their happily ever afters makes my head spin, but I am going to trust the writer.

I’m pretty sure they said at one point that he was 14, but yes, it still applies, she is a lot older than him. And ten years apart is not that big a deal when you’re 30 and 40 years old, but it’s a much bigger deal when you’re 14 and 24. I’m really interested to see where they go with it!

Yes, they’re 14 and 24 according to their intros, but I’d still be surprised to see the show really go there.

3

They will both grow older...18 & 28? Not the end of the world...he's manly (somewhat already), has a high position, and someone she can respect...aren't those her requirements?

6

Wait, I know…perhaps someone will get amnesia…and the other will wait for 10 years…and, and??

Oh, drat. Wrong drama 😉

@marysadanaga @kcarlsen

9

Manly, @kcarlsen ? I mean, I don't want to gendershame, but if we are considering conventional manliness, then please remember that this piece of 6 ft. macho reached her shoulder and ran to his mum in an adorable pink women's hanbok and hood.
Like other's have fallen for the opposite of what they said they wanted, so I think some sort of relation (but non-sexual, more Dumbledora -like) could form between the two.

I was not able to watch this episode closely, but I agree with @attiton's parallel. Also, the boy was complaining about 3 sisters, the Maeng's are 3 sisters, and one of them saved him from assassination. I was fast forwarding, but I also got a knowledgeable older sister, even mother vibe from her showing him the village at night. Finally, she dressed him as a girl to help him escape. All of these things could be taken more as comments on women's position during this time, the theme of this show, than suggestions of an impending marriage.

Prospects-wise, catch-22. You have a problem if you have too high a bar (Ha Na), OR if YOU are the high bar itself (CP).

I know many have said this, but can I say again - I love the piece to cameras! (with supers on the side).

P.S. Ha Na's PTC had a hilarious sly dig at Rowoon who is a towering 190.5cm IRL:
"He must be between 5.5-6ft. A tall man is never worth the extra height." 🤣🤣🤣

I too wrote the same thing before reading the other comments. If so many of us felt that, then it means it was very much implied.

One way I look at it is that in those times princes used to be married off very early, but the marriage was consummated only after both reached a certain age. Could they be planning something like the Queen being deposed as per the evil gang's plan, and then HaNa marrying the CP and protecting him in the palace like his mother used to do?

Would you choose to illustrate it with two young women, screaming, giggling, and throwing water on each other?
Or why do you imagine the show's writers have chosen that?

So well noted @unit that the show is at its best when these characters are just sitting together and talking. And such well fleshed out characters. Even the little crown prince has a distinctive personality.

BTW, did anyone also feel that the show was hinting at a pairing of the oldest sister and the crown prince? Both of them were interviewed at the beginning of the episode and their first meeting was a typical meet-cute. It felt weird coz the CP is a child, but that's the vibe I got.

One of my favorite scenes this week was when Soon-deok and Jung-woo were reading each other’s notes from the day, and they each smiled at the other’s handwriting. And then Jung-woo puts hers carefully away in a box for treasures, and Soon-deok carefully burns his. I think that made my heart ache more than anything. He really is a kid with a crush who doesn’t want to imagine the future and she is already distancing herself because she can’t stop thinking about the future.

Sam-soon-gu (their official couple name as far as I’m concerned) continues to be amazing. Sam-soon wears her heart on her sleeve, but that also makes her much more aware of when Soon-gu shows her that he likes her in little ways. How many drama characters have we seen be totally oblivious that their crush likes them back? But Sam-soon is pretty confident he reciprocates and I love that about her. And I definitely rewound to watch Soon-gu’s face a couple of times when his lips twitched and he almost smiled before getting control again. Love it!

Yes I love that love letter story beat and how they cut between the scenes for contrast.

Also the contrast in how copious his words are (2 sheets!) compared to her very laconic "I'll manage." (written on the back of scrap paper, no less) It's sweetly poignant how carefully he folded her paper to leave nothing but her words.

BUT! on 2nd viewing I thought that scene was brilliant (1) not only for comic deflation with the misleading pulp romance dialogue (2) but it could be authorial subtext too -- that was no "scrap paper".

SD who had to keep her true feelings carefully hidden -- hid it in plain sight. That sheet of dialogue was the love confession of Lady Cho Hee "who poured out her heart to her beloved". SD has effectively displaced her true affections and ventriloquized it via "The Lady's Private Life"

Our characters are so adorable!

Jung-Woo finally understood a part of why he has chest pains. But he needs to understand, it works only with both people being in love and not because they're single and young. Soon-Dek could see how Sam-Soon and her brother were feeling, it's why she accepted. She want to marry people who love each other.

Our main characters have feelings for each other but their way to handle them are very different. Jung-Woo is 100% open to this new love. Soon-Deok is lying her identity and doesn't have the luxury to choose her life. They're both widower, so it's kinda complicated... But Jung-Woo's little actions are so cute! The way he put his hand under hers, the messages, his pout, etc.

I really like the sisters, their relationship, their independance, their honesty.

Sam-Soon could be a little bit less direct with the poor Jung-Woo. It's not his fault if he couldn't be with a woman and became a widower at the age of 17.

Lady Park is really an interesting villain. I can't hate her. She really loved her family. I wonder if she just helps her husband with his big ambition because she's smarter or if it was her plan from the beginning.

Otherwise, this drama continue to be beautiful! I can't believe we already reach the middle.

I might be being more generous to Lady Park than she deserves, because she seems to enjoy devising her schemes, but her involvement might also be motivated by the need to save the lives of her family. We’ve seen what a mess the men make when left to their own devices — her brother seems a particularly toxic combination of ambition and depravity — so if not for her steely hand guiding the way, their bumbling might have already gotten the family exiled or worse.

12
2

Required fields are marked *

I think this is probably right--she is saddled with an evil brother who is also bumbling, so she had to step in to save the family, if not the entire faction.

But I also think it could be as @emsel says, she could be being shown as the brains behind the faction, whose motivation is the same as any man, achieving power for herself and not, as is usually shown, for her family.

Didn’t she say something in her intro about women being the true power in the country? So I think you’re right — it’s all of it. She has her own ambitions, has confidence in the superiority of her intellect, and realizes she better run the ship because otherwise her clan will be in trouble.

9

I think she thirsts for power like anyone ... and while she often gets her will, she is often easily brushed aside as "just a woman".
I have thought she might end up being so frustrated she'll help a solidaric fraction of women.

2 episodes ago, I thought the later half of the drama would be dragged down by the murder investigation, but suprisingly they put down this card in Ep 7 and made it interesting, but now I suspect that they are going to wring all the sadness through the OTP. Both the ML and FL characters are noble enough to not cross the Joseon rules, so it would be interesting to watch their moral conflicts and the choices they make, but for now I am enjoying it as much as @unit and few of the beanies here.

I am presently in a threatened position, in exile at someone else's house this Thanksgiving week, as family members all around are scheming to remove my patriarchal privileges, so I had to fast forward through this episode. So I'm sure I missed a lot of key developments.

But I still regret that this show had to center the standard sageuk plot device of scheming ministers, even if they show a woman at the center. Not only does the tired trope of political conspiracy take away time from the romance(s) I enjoy much more (I'd love to see more time spent on the so-called "foul-mouthed" sister and her relationship with the younger man) it is for me undermining the commentary of the show on absurdity of Joseon male oppression.

However, speaking of standard sageuk tropes (or maybe standard scenes) I have a really minor technical question that someone might be able to answer: does anyone know whether the sinking of bodies (and swimming to save the sinking bodies) through amazingly well-lit and incredibly deep water that we so often see as action and metaphor is done through computers? Or is it through the classic "dry for wet" technique, where the actors pretend to be floating, or swimming, and by using artificial mist and special lighting the director makes it look underwater?
I was just curious, since it seems like people are endlessly sinking in a bottomless pool in a fair number of sageuks I've watched.

It looks live they have a special place to film the under water scenes.

Thank you @kurama! I am even more impressed with Cho Yi Hyun now that I know she was actually swimming, albeit in a shallow swimming pool. She had a strong pull in her underwater stroke, a lot more convincing than her "very fast" (as her character described it) running. Of course its also interesting how they then can edit the video for to show the appearance of great depth, but those computer generated effects are less impressive to me.

I remembered Bossam watching Jung-woo fall into the water, and Soon-deok rescuing him…in Bossam, the Princess played by Kwan Yuri was sinking and her rescuer, Jung Il-Woo swam to save her. This show again flips the traditional roles. Anyway, in Bossam behind the scenes, Yuri discussed the layers of clothes and how uncomfortable it was filming that scene. I can’t imagine!

Cool! I read years ago that most underwater scenes were filmed in a special “tank”, this must be what that meant. Thanks!

This drama has no right being so funny, I think the opening scene with Jung-woo and his chest pains has to be the funniest in this drama so far.

Idk, I found youngest sis a bit mean. If a dude was legally not allowed to ever find love, I'd feel bad for him, not scoff or laugh at the poor guy.

That being said, I’m shipping youngest daughter and police orabeoni the most, they’re so cute. I loved them just
lobbing compliments at each other from across the room, with the poor butler trapped in between.

Rowoon is so adorable in this. Him dropping off lil love notes?
him keeping her one sentence replies in a box 😭😭 meanwhile, her burning his notes?? brutal

I was impressed with the sheer survival instincts on the Crown Prince. Anyways, where is this plotline going? Hoping the Crown Prince and eldest sis only have a sibling type relationship... Bc I'm getting a bad feeling.

Oh, Soon-deok’s FIL does not like taking orders from his wife, or watching her give them. They're an interesting foil to the king and queen. I really like how the king and the queen are in sync; he doesn't engage in recriminations, they just both try to get the job done. Power couple fr.

Again about how cute Jung-woo is: Dude is so in love, he's even cradling the chess piece (?) representing her with so much affection 🥺

Jung-woo wearing her clothes all of a sudden really confused me, but how else would we get a classic kdrama romantic water rescue. Unfortunately there are still 4 more weeks left of this drama, so I doubt she wants to marry you, buddy 😔

Personally, I struggle to get thru this drama at times... Not sure if it's a pacing issue or just me. there's a lot of funny and cute moments but so many lulls. But I have to admit, I'm really engaged with the court intrigue for once.

I'm struggling to pinpoint why, as much as I'm enjoying the show, it also sometimes feels a little dull. And it may very well be the pacing. It is so even, so steady. It makes it a soothing watch, but we don't get those high conflict moments. Or something like that...

Second that!
I love how p-r-o-t-r-a-c-t-e-d his angina is -- all that OTT hammy acting, with the chest clutching, the facial contortions, the grunting, and that slow melodramatic crumble into the floorboards. Such a scream 🤣🤣 and how he even had the mental space to conduct a controlled experiment through it all:
"You, stand there by the wall! You, go stand next to her now. Ok, two steps apart! oh oh argh! ALWAYS two steps apaaaaart..."

@unit, thanks for the recap !!
Such a fun show .
The budding romances, the obstacles they face and the painful heart based love detector !

I love the colors of this show. The PD is doing a fantastic job.
I like how camera angles incorporate Oh Bong‘s reactions to the conversations.
The characters breaking the 4th wall is used well.
The king complaining about being king is hilarious.
When Soon Goo is told not to participate in the piling of the hands, his look of disappointment 😂
The Cliff of Non-Doom & The Water of Immeasurable Depth make a joint appearance.
Back to 2 episodes I hope next week.
Perfect Marriage Revenge gave us a warm makjang ,

Same, same. This drama is just so beautiful, in every aspect. Most obviously the cinematography, wardrobe, lighting, camera angles, scene compositions… just pretty damn spot on. (This becomes all the more obvious when compared to other shows I’m live watching atm. The Dog Show being a main offender with - at times - pretty weird camera angles and lacking shots (plus clunky ML, but I digress).)

But that’s not all: the writing is great. All characters multi dimensional. They all get a good amount of screen time for further development, this being a big ensemble. Obviously the acting is great, too. Mystery/political scheming interesting and not overbearing. All romance plots sweet to bittersweet. Swoony perfection!

At this moment, I’m just fully emerging myself in this show. I do so hope it stays great until the end. Fingers crossed! I’m wary like @attiton here, I must admit.

In the meantime I’m wondering why there’s no such lantern festival where I live, only cold, dark, muddy winter. Siiiiiiiigh. 😅

This was such a good episode! I am sad we only had one this week.

Sam Soon and her Lieutenant are getting more screen time. And he is not immune to her charms. I love it!

I just wish we get a little scene to know if Soon Gu will recognize his sister soon. I really do not buy he could not tell it is her.

Jung Woo and Soon Deok are developing feelings for each other. He wants to marry her. I am not sure how the writer will resolve this. It may take a King's approval for this ro happen.

Thank you for recap so I can relive our one single but awesome episode this week!

The third volume of Madam's Private Life out!! Woohoo! I'm so happy for all the Hwa-rok fans. Even Jung-woo shed a tear and you know he probably has high literary standards.

Ugh, I love this drama so much and am just rewatching episodes and scenes multiple times. Acting, writing, directing, and costuming coming together really well. The show knows how to inject little humorous beats between the big humorous beats.

Poor Jung-woo is getting mistaken as a man resentful and jealous of possible romantic relationships because of his matchmaking deity powers.

My big head-scratcher is that I don't think Soon-gu recognizes Soon-deok. For a few moments, I suspected he pretended not to know, but there is no way he would act surprised that she knew he could swim nor could he sit still while she volunteers as the fake Hwa-rok.

Also LOL that Soon-deok engineered a Cliff of Doom end for Hwa-rok. It's like she had gone to the future and watched a bunch of sageuks or something.

We're already at the halfway mark and I gotta say that I'm really impressed with how this show just gets consistently better after every episode. Let's hope it'll continue being good and hopefully I don't jinx it! I just love how Jung Woo is truly like a teenager that has fallen in love for the first time. It's just too adorable to watch! Like how teenagers are, he kinda acts on his growing crush on impulse and didn't even try to restrain himself. Love the fact that he's an open book, so whatever he's feeling is literally so obvious to anyone LOL. Pretty sure that Soon Deok has an idea of his crush on her (it's just too obvious at this point lol) but is trying hard to ignore it and restrain herself due to her double life and her allegiance.

Loving the Sam Soon and Soon Gu love line! They're adorable too and I love how straightforward Sam Soon is when it comes to her feelings! You go girl! I can't wait to see how the other pairings would develop.

I think the Crown Prince and Hana might be red herring to make people question what their relationship is gonna be. But I think it's just a way to get Hana acquainted to the Royal Family and possibly have them pardoned her and allow her to remain unmarried. From her interview, you can tell that marriage is not her priority but she's open to settling if needed to. But from her requirements, she's definitely not a romance-driven person that's why she has a more higher standards for a partner in comparison to her sisters.

But then again, we were shown in this episode that while she is the intelligent one among the sisters, she's also the less skilled one in life skills. It makes more more sense for her sisters to be unmarried because at least they have something to fall back to survive. Doo Ri has her sewing skills to make money from being a seamstress while Sam Soon can make money through being an author. Ha Na, on the hand, don't have those sets of skills apart from being intelligent and well read. So, in a way, I could also see her possibly being involved in politics (for her intelligence and knowledge to not be wasted) and I think the only way is for her to become a Crown Princess? Yes, it's visually icky since the Crown Prince is 10 years younger and is very visibly way younger than her. But if were to take into context of the era, the crown princes during that time do marry young and their partners are almost always older than them. So it does make sense. Although in our modern minds, this would be a rather strange union.

The marriage would be more of an alliance though rather than something romantic and it kinda fits with what Hana has in mind. I'm not sure if the drama would go this route but it is a possibility.

Adding on: I actually think that Soon Gu recognizes Soon Deok. It’s just that he’s the type of person who doesn’t make a fuss over the things he knows and just plays along with it. Like how he is with the Hwa Rok situation and the mystery surrounding Lady Cho Hee’s death. When he found out that Hwa Rok is Sam Soon from the get-go and didn’t make a fuss over it and instead decided to just let her go and also when he’s going along with the story of Lady Cho Hee’s suicide but is secretly investigating and discovering that it was a murder. I just think he knows it’s Soon Deok but isn’t saying because he understands that she probably has her reasons. I could be wrong, of course, but I’m kinda half expecting that once Soon Deok comes clean about her identity, Soon Gu would be like, “Oh yeah. I know”. LOL. I feel like that would be so in line with his character.

I sort of get Hana. I'm an old maid by modern standards and while I'm not against marriage, I'm not eagerly looking for one either. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't. I do feel like the longer I'm "waiting", there are more expectations due to increased life experience and because if I switch from single to married, it's got to be for someone I find amazing. And I've gotten too used to being on my own to compromise.

I think even if a marriage is arranged for Hana and the prince, it's not like they would be married and acting as husband and wife while he's still 14. They could possibly fall in love when he's much older. But having a weak prince marry someone with no strong connections is also sort of unlikely. Politics would definitely be her in wheelhouse. Or maybe there would be some literary or historian position for her? Or maybe she can be the first ever female royal tutor.

I think it would be awesome if she would be able to get the position of a royal tutor though I’m not sure how they would make that a possibility but its a fusion sageuk so anything is possible. I just see her as someone that belongs in the palace in some way. Even if it’s not as a crown princess or a royal tutor, she could also be the Queen’s right-hand person/advisor.

I think Ha-na has maybe has a ghost girlfriend ... at least, if I were to illustrate the rumour "she is possessed by a virgin ghost" I would be shadows and sinister sounds in her house at night, or maybe her suddenly talking with a different voice, the voice of the dead virgin. Instead that rumour was illustrated with her in the water, squealing and giggling with this ... ghost. As you do.

I love this. I was so disappointed we only got one episode. The romances are darling and I want our guys to have happily ever after and as so many of you have written already - 2023 has just scarred us all! I can’t tell you how much I love Rowoon in this - his heart aches, his cranky Confuscious-isms (what is the real word here? I’m blanking), his scented note passing, his lack of self awareness. ❤️. The way Jung-woo and Soon-deok are together is awesome because they are a match of equals (except in height!)
I love every woman in the show - it’s just such a great program about foolish men and the women who basically rule the world. From left ministers wife, to Soon-deok and the three daughters, it’s great to see such a female centric program. The men have to live up to them, not the other way around.

I won’t expect a happy ending. I can’t even see how it can have a happy ending for our OTP and our maidens, and the sister in law who loves a farmer. It has been managed in other fusion Sageuks like Sunkyunwan Scandal, so I will just hope we get a benevolent ruler and love all around.

I think they will end up together

Show has subtly left us hopeful glimmering breadcrumbs in the narrative (at least I hope!): --

Here are my reasons why

(i) This is a romcom
(ii) That Agents of Love are doomed to be widowed early. I bastardize-apply law of double jeopardy here -- you cannot be punished for the same crime twice. They have BOTH been widowed young already. So.
(iii) If logic (ii) fails in the law of k-drama universe, there is still mathematics. Two negatives make a positive by cancellation - since both are Agents of Love they cancel out
(iv) The son of SD is not her real son. (this is a major plot point). That means, there is nothing really tying SD to the Jo family -- either legally or biologically.
(v) Lady Jo actually (in passing) offered to JW her grandson as a "godson" of sorts -- since he is not allowed to adopt. and the lil boy takes a shine to JW cos he "likes my mother." (in more ways than one, hur hur hur)
(vi) Most importantly! -- One of SD's claims to fame as the legendary matchmaker came early in the series -- she was able to marry off a WIDOWED noblewoman! (this is actually my strongest point from the story)

I love the agents of love theories above, and have decided you are 100% correct! They are so uber adorable I can’t imagine anything but a happy ending for these two widowed matchmakers.

I feel like I missed the whole part about the child not being her actual son. Was her former husband married before? Do they explain it somewhere that I missed? I need to rewatch more carefully.

I am a bit confused about that, too, but since there are several dead, or assumed dead, young people in that family, I imagine that MIL weeds out unpromising children and in-laws and grafts smart children to energetic and intelligent but obedient sons and daughters/in-law.
She doesn't care about the well-being of her grandchild, only about his health and education; whether he will be beneficial to the clan.
So his nosebleeds are met with medicine instead of rest, and he is to study with a tutor even when that is not even for him to get smarter, but so that, unknowingly, he can be used as a kind of bug.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's the opposite.

She cared about his grandson's health but she didn't know he was nose bleeding and said his health was important.

He's a noble from an important family, for every parents, the education is important. We never saw her pushing him too far.

She used him to closer to Jung-Woo but in the same time, they're from the same family and JW is famous to be very smart. So it's win for the grandson too.

0

His nosebleed clearly indicated that all that studying was too much for him. It may be held down with medicine, but also, "The hour of the dog" is between 7PM and 9PM and the question was whether he should study *beyond* that time, so whether this boy should be studying after 9PM. To make him do that, she will give him medicine.
That's not caring.

0

Health is important because all the studying will not benefit the clan if he dies instead of marrying and breeding the next generation.

0

What I'm saying is I wouldn't be all that surprised if MIL had murdered his parents.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

No, it was not explained. The MIL alluded to it in passing that her son is not her biological son during the discussion of the nose bleed incident.

My best guesses are:
(i) The dead husband was clearly a sickly young man - he probably was not able to fulfil his conjugal duties and hence they are childless (it might even have been a chaste marriage with just love!) so they adopted.

(ii) The above theory + they adopted the orphan of the other daughter-in-law that Lady Jo MIL was rumored to have killed off to earn the Virtuous Woman plaque.

Have you noticed how th a show is contradicting the things people sai in the 4th wall interviews?

But one of his sisters could be exactly what made Hana accept some kind of marriage with him.

Ten years is a wider gap than I'd like to see as a real love match ... I wouldn't think it appropriate before he was 25, really. Even at that age, ten years difference is not equally developed at all, especially not when Hana is so smart. (If she was more like her youngest sister, childish-sweet, a relationship with a younger, mature man (at more than 14, though) could be equal.
An caring arrangement in the guise of marriage, where both of them gain from it, is what I'd like better.
I don't know if they can make consummation between those two a palatable thought.

I finally just catched up with you all and watched all episodes thus far. I like it, not love it, but still a good drama up to this point. I found it to be struggling to finish some episodes, but i persevered due to liking the characters and the overall plot. The gifs posted on various fan walls made the drama more exciting than really is sometimes.
I like Rowoon here, and that says a lot since I couldn't watch him in many, many shows. Maybe he is similar in RL, a cute nerdish goofball, or maybe he is getting the grasp of acting after so many projects, but he looks, to me, more natural. His stiff upper lip is almost completelly gone here, we will see if it appears when/if things get more serious.
The FL is what convinced me to watch it at the beginning, I like her acting. She does a good job even though the character is somewhat unrealistic to me. But I accept it just like I do in all the Kdramas and I chose to be fooled. Two things I noticed that were a little icky to me: the fact that she comes up with the plan and the males are made to look like idiots, but useful ones, that are willing to risk their lives for both females and the way she was running although claiming that she is a good runner (she is better at swimming, I say). The scene was beautiful done though.
I love all the other characters and the love stories that are starting between them. The King and the queen are a treat to watch when together and when apart. The leutenant is great and I hope he gets more airtime. All three sisters are interesting and fun to watch. I din't get the the presumed love story feeling between the CP and the older sister as many beanies expressed here and I found it to be more of a way to introduce her to the royal family for the future. I still think that she get to fall in love and get married while having a way to still be independent and using her wits in that relationship. Another thing that made me intrigued is how terrible the FL is at matching them and even her sister in law although she has the best intention and how great the ML is although he has the worst ones, or at least at the beginning of the story he did.
Overall a good watch for me, looking forward to see how it will progress and what the writers had in mind as far as the meaning of it all.
On to the PMR for me, hope to catch up fast since it looks like an easy and fun watch.
