I learned how to insert quotes and pictures, which is exciting. 😂

We’re traveling so I’m very behind on watching things – will need to catch up when things calm down. Hope the latest episodes have been awesome!

Got here late, because: life. Toki, thank you so much again for the recap! This week your blog was vital to really wrap my head around all the implications of DY’s birth secret, otherwise there’s just so much that I would have missed. Big big gamsahamnida 💚😊

    Great recap, thank you @wishfultoki
I’ve watched to the end of ep. 18 and I’m so stressed. Filial piety- key theme this episode and I’m expecting a dramatic pivot coming up. This drama has all along made me aware of the individual’s vulnerability in the face of power. It’s been interesting too to see the King losing his grip because of his powerlessness. As KDS pointed out to him, what good is it to be a king and be unable to defend those you love. I don’t know how I’m going to last until next week, and then it’ll all be over. Good grief. What a roller-coaster.

I’ve gone from neutral on Dae Yeop to total dislike now that I know who he is irl.

He’s Imhae’s son though, not Imhae himself. It is true that Imhae wasn’t a likeable dude. Plus he fled from the Japanese with his father, leaving little brother Gwanghae to save the country. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Imhae

Poor Dae-yeop doesn’t have good luck with dads.

Dae Yeop still has several episodes left to sacrifice himself for the princess. I wonder if it’s more or less likely now that he knows they’re closely related.

I felt for him. Shin Hyun-soo is doing so well. He made me feel his dilemma. So often too when he says things; for example, when he was berating his mother, what he says cannot be taken at face value. There was so much bitterness and irony in it. At one point, when he wanders into the courtyard, he made me feel how bereft he was of some one to confide in. He’d spoken to Ba-wu, but could not tell him everything, only warn him, but he needed someone who understood what had happened to him, someone who’d walked with him throughout his life. I felt that he really needed to talk to the princess. He was sad and in need of emotional support.

I’ve watched Ep. 18 and just need to gather some strength to write the recap. I felt so much for him. I’ve made fun of the “fake incest” trope in dramas, but this time it comes with the added bonus that he has nobody to turn to. He’s so terribly unhappy and saying things he knows he doesn’t mean (he’d never do the scandalous thing VP Lee suggested, I’m sure). 😢

I agree, he’s not going to do that. He didn’t mean it. It was his anger at the situation he’s found himself in.

But is he a real historical figure? When I look at his line, I’m wondering … {I want ask more but I don’t want to add spoliers).

Fantastic recap and pictures! I do wonder what happened to the line of royal guards that were at BaWu’s house, do we know why they were removed?

Ah, well VP Lee has a minion among the royal guards, that’s why those guarding the house made way for him. I suspect he also had most of them leave for the night.

Maybe I’m just tired but my only reaction to the ending was “yeah guessed it.” 😂😂😂😂😂
Or else I’m just less easy to impress these days (actually that’s also true, isn’t it…)

I’m trying to decide what I want from this show narratively, thematically, politically, historically and character wise for the ending but honestly, I don’t really know.
So then I ask what I wanted from the beginning or how I would write a story like this.
Logically, in terms of just how history and politics works, a happy ending seems implausible but I think they’re gonna push for one at least for our OTP.

We guessed it like a month ago hehe, but the fun part is guessing who he is and whether he’s a historical or fictional character (for now I’m going with fictional).

I think it’s pretty easy to watch the show as a an explanation of the last days of Gwanghae’s reign. We know what happened in the end, but not how we got there. However, if I didn’t know the basic history I might be lost and think that the story doesn’t have an overarching plot.

A happy ending is still possible without forcing the history too much. The writers are on safe ground because the records for this time were lost. We only have the history as written by the winning faction, but the reality may have been different.
