Studio Dragon, the major broadcast production company in Korea, reported that this year its produced number of episodes shown has dropped by more than half since last year. The studio is losing money. It is not a surprise since its majority owner, CJ&E, the vertical integrated entertainment company, bombed in the 2023 box office with 5 of 6 films produced losing large sums of money. And with a reported backlog of 100 series pre-produced, the Korea drama industry may be heading towards its own creative ice age.

Actors have always supplemented their careers with side jobs such as endorsement deals. But even brands have cut back on full endorsement deals to have lower paid “brand ambassadors” or SNS pay-to-promote ads with influencers. Now, many actors are finding new or revived pursuits:

In recent years, famous actors have become directors (Lee Jung-jae, Jung Woo-sung); singers (Park Eun-bin, Han Ji Min); songwriter (Jeon So Min); and fine artists with exhibitions (Ha Ji Won, Park Gyuri). But the current film box office king, Ma Dong-seok (Don Lee), in 2022 became the writer-producer for the Roundup film franchise which debuted this week its fourth installment at a star-studded premiere at COEX.

I also expect more actors to move into other ventures, such as starting their own YT channels or business ventures.

I still don't understand why if dramas are available and already produced, they aren't shown on Wed/Thurs. I mean I *do* get it; people weren't watching on those days but I don't understand why people weren't watching compared to in the past.

I also don't know why people aren't watching or going to the movies.

This is so sad. I've always considered them the gold standard of k-drama production. I hope they're able to turn it around.

Sounds like the industry needs to cut back on the movies and and reinvest in the dramas, maybe with a complete overhaul, like shorter series, more creativity with scripts, and better agreements with OTT platforms.

Or perhaps slow down on adapting every webtoon/web-novel ever made, including the most ridiculous and non-adaptable into live-action format ones, and start investing more into decently written original scripts? Wild idea, I know, but what if?

I don't mind adaptations because it's not like I necessarily know a drama is adaptation at first or at all but I agree that it would be nice if original works were mixed in more.

I wonder what was the last original drama I've seen.

It's extra wild to me because I remember quite vividly the times when "webtoon adaptation" was a synonym to "nearly guaranteed flop everyone sane and respectable would do their best to avoid"... oh, how the tables turned!

My last original script kdrama must've been DR SLUMP. Cannot say I was very impressed by it, but ultimately I believe it was precisely show's attempts to homage/replicate successful formula of leads' previous hit works that ruined the potential story initially had. The irony!

3

QoT seems to be original too. While I sure like Lovely Runner better, but original scriots do seem to fare better.

Thanks @welh640, for being our kdrama ‘business’ watcher. What you report may be a sort of ‘canary in the coal mine’ moment in kdramaland or older US beanies would recognize: “Danger, Will Robinson!” moment.
This is a big subject maybe worthy of some kind of DB post about the State of Kdramaland today.
We as viewers are at the end of the kdrama food chain at the mercy of all kinds of hazards.
I am a bit of a broken record about US availability especially availability from the big 3 networks: KBS, SBS and MBC. The Disney plus ‘death star’ is always orbiting about. Recently I griped on my Fan Wall about the scarcity kdramas on Viki’s “Coming Soon” page. I just checked and among all the dramas listed there is only one kdrama. People are worrying about all the dramas coming in May but it doesn’t seem they will be available on Viki.
On the other hand to give Viki their due I am currently live watching 3 dramas there: HIDE, THE MIDNIGHT STUDIO and (MY) LOVELY RUNNER.

Variety show Running Man aired its 700th episode and I can & can't believe it's lasted so long. Even if it's peaked, I feel like losing it would be so painful since it's so iconic.

I don't watch many variety shows but I miss the Running Man of the past which involved more physicality and games. I get it; the members have aged and can't/shouldn't be as physical since it affects their bodies but I'm missing that type of stuff.

Nowadays, are there even shows in that vein anymore?

Required fields are marked *

The original premise of RUNNING MAN was that it was going to be an adventure travel show in the vein of 2D1N. But costs pulled back the venue to Seoul proper. At the time, it was a very different variety show than the quiz, sketch or music ones because it relied on lower budget missions/games.

It is the huge international Asian popularity of the program that has kept it going even though ratings have decreased over time. It is ironic that in the last five years, producers like Netflix poured obscene amounts of money into production of shows like BUSTED or THE GREAT ESCAPE but they did not have the staying power of RM.

Current Korean variety appears to focus more on crime investigation and travel/food shows.

I liked Busted. I liked S1, S3, & S2 in that order haha
I've never heard of The Great Escape.
I've only seen S1 of 1n2d

I typically watch Yoo Jae Seok shows so I also liked PlayYou (PlayYoo?) S1 & S2, The Zone: Survival Mission S1 & S2, and Korea #1

The only show, so far, that I couldn't get through was Apartment 404. When I watched it, it made me wish for more Busted.

I miss the games of old Running Man. Like they used to seem like big kids sometimes with the water gun fights or running around.

I'm curious how long the show will last; will it go to episode 1000?

I think it will go as long as SBS can license it to foreign Asian markets. When it tries to infuse younger talent (people in their 30s) it seems to upset the balance. It got a bump with guests who needed to promote projects when the network entertainment talk shows ended but now those talkers have been popping up on YouTube with Shin Dong-yup and Jang Doyeon.

Ah Running Man, it used to be my favorite show. I would even prefer it to some dramas. But I never went back once Lee Kwang soo left, he kept me going in the show when it was going through the toughest time. The issue with RM is that it was best when they had physical games especially name tag ripping. While that game was not the sole reason why RM became popular, it was definitely what RM was known best for. Also they had really smart games back in 2011 to 2014 period but they were also usually physical. I can't blame them for stopping the physical games, I can understand how they can be taxing on an ageing cast but then excluding that RM became like any other variety shows where there is all talk and jokes. Or games you can play while sitting in the same place. I think it became really popular because itbwas different. Idk how long it will go on but I can say they can not change the cast. Even the new cast members entering were received with so much hate. If they would've made the show seasonal maybe they could've continued with the same physical games with a younger cast each time but all the fanbase finds the OG cast so endearing that members leaving or entering the show had a great impact on it.

I saw a video about how vocals or being truly good vocalists is becoming less & less important with each kpop generation and it makes me sounds like a boomer but it made think "see, the past WAS better!" Haha

Obviously, that's not entirely true (and as a black woman, I would rarely ever chose to go back in time) but it just sucks that some things just seem to be getting worse and/or more mediocre and people just accept it cause we don't have any other choices or options. The video mentioned how kpop has always been more focused on aesthetics and appealing to the masses but there still used to be actual skills honed and involved. Now it's just about becoming influencers and brand ambassadors.

I literally just thought about a western cartoon I liked called Star vs The Forces of Evil and thought "damn, that was a good show with a message" and where's more shows like it? (I wasn't 100% satisfied with how it ended but what can you do)

They get cancelled or shelved or cut or not produced because head honchos don't think they're bankable enough. Hollywood keeps making sequels and comic movies because it's "safe" even if the quality is getting progressively worse and there's diminishing returns. All because of money!

One of the reasons I've watched kdramas is because at least you see the entire series and it won't (typically) end on a cliffhanger. But now, even dramas are being affected by some not even seeing the light of day.

I don't understand money, math, and business but it's so disheartening.

I don't know anything about music, but there are many videos on YT where famous bands are singing My House by 2PM, and it is so weird that the only ones actually singing with forceful, strong, prominent vocals similar to the original are Got7 and one or two other older bands. With the other more modern bands I don't hear any words, just sounds like humming harmonically to the tune of the music, although they are actually singing.
Like you said, it seems that being good vocalists is becoming less and less important.

I wouldn't say that ratio between talented and just pretty idols changed that much between earlier generations and now (many famous names debuted BEFORE learning any singing skills, even basic ones, and had to catch up on the move, so to speak), but the overall quality of MUSIC in kpop declined so drastically that you hardly hear hit songs where decent vocals are NEEDED these days. Which means lack of practice for everyone, I suppose... I'd say previous generations were more motivated to work extra hard to improve though, because while competition was less in numbers of artists, it was by no means less fierce AND it usually was harder to hit it big, even for a group from prominent agency. While now? Well...

I think music worldwide has been on slide since they started digitizing instruments and synthesizing voices. People don't even have to be able to sing well anymore... their voices are just adjusted digitally. The heart of music -- talented musicians and vocalists -- has been supplanted by "visuals" carefully crafted by marketing teams and sound studios.

YouTube music instructor and music producer Rick Beato has opined about the demise of the music industry. He blames technology to some respect as pop artists do not have to become actual musicians in order to make music. Autotune and production loops make songs monotone, out of tune and lacking soul, interest and melodic surprises of live instruments.

A recent study of music from 1980 to 2020 had some interesting findings. The authors found that, in general, lyrics have become simpler and easier to understand over time and that the number of different words used within songs has decreased, particularly among rap and rock songs. However, they also found that the number of words with three or more syllables has increased in rap songs since 1980. They suggest that while the use of longer words has increased in rap songs, general increases in the repetitiveness of lyrics across multiple genres have led to lyrics becoming simpler overall.

The authors speculate that the trend towards simpler lyrics could reflect changes in music consumption, such as increases in songs being played as background music.

The authors found that lyrics have tended to become more emotional and personal over time. Use of emotionally positive and negative words increased in rap songs, while the use of emotionally negative lyrics increased for R&B, pop and country songs. Additionally, all genres showed an increase in the use of anger-related words.

Additional analyses into the views of the 12,000 song lyrics on the online song lyric platform Genius revealed that the lyrics of older rock songs tend to be viewed more than those of newer rock songs but that the lyrics of newer country songs tend to be viewed more than those of older country songs. This could indicate that rock listeners prefer lyrics from older songs, while country listeners may prefer lyrics from newer songs.

If you watched The Greatest Night in Pop, the documentary about the making of "We are the World", you realize how great all the singers in that room were. (We can leave the debate about the actual quality of the song itself for another day.) When the singers break out spontaneously into a rendition of Day-O for Harry Belafonte, the singing is amazing.
That said, whether the past was indeed better in all respects, I agree with you that much of it was worse for many, many people and is overromanticized.

There’s a documentary called The Wrecking Crew that details how the famous pop recordings of the mid-1900s were basically all played by the same group of studio musicians in LA. The stars did do the singing and then learned just enough musicianship to play the songs live on tour.

This is still true today, but record labels are not signing bands anymore to produce albums. You do not need a record label to record and distribute songs; you can home record tracks and upload them to platforms like Spotify. However, the production value and music theory composition is woefully inadequate if professional musicians and producers are not involved in the process.

At least where I am at, there is still a lot of performing bands grinding out a career in music. In the past, bar bands played for the cover charge and hoping a record A&R man who see them play and sign them to a record deal. If signed and an LP was made, the band would go out on tour to sell records. When record sales fell flat, the process got reversed: now bands would record singles for airplay in order to support their live performances.

Happy Friday, Beanies! Today's playlist is kinda all over the place – it was supposed to continue silly performances theme from last week, now in a form of TV stages, but vibe keeps going off and I'm too lazy to fix it back... But there certainly IS a lot of silliness! And lame dancing. And tragic outfits... In short, all pleasures in one place, enjoy!

We're starting with this, because Disney vlog last week reminded me how much I love LYN in suspenders – they make him even more ridiculously vertical than he already is, bless))) This show – and Season3 in particular – are always fun to rewatch, he had such a good stage chemistry with everyone! Song is called “First love” and it's in Cantonese – cannot judge how well he did in that regard, but otherwise sounded amazing as usual still cannot dance tho. Plus, that flower necktie pin, awww! In other hand, producers love to pair him up with tiniest ladies possible, aren't they? She's barely reaching his shoulder even with heels on!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnbTu8sTD20

When I first stumbled upon his episode of c-version of MASKED SINGER, I was dumbfounded – this is like the worst identity mystery ever in TV history! The only saving grace is him going there after debut when he was still relatively unknown because he'd last 5 seconds max unrecognized nowadays, and that's only before opening his mouth))) His costume lol – poor stylists, they did all they could, but it was a losing game since the get-go. Btw, I wanna know who the other guy is - his voice is really good too and they made a great duo. Title is “How to say I don't love you” (OG artist was coincidentally a part of judge's panel lmao, how ballsy of them!):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfwx4lb3yOs

Solo performance as well because I can't get enough of this madness. Btw, that costume looks super heavy and hot, idk how he managed to film for hours in it, let alone perform multiple times... Song's called “Red roses” and sounds way too angsty for such title:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xPA0Ddnp3E

While this stage is not really ridiculous or funny, he's still wearing a neon hot pink AND a cast on his leg – from that infamous AJTL injury. Actually, the amount of times he performed in that state leaves me conflicted between admiration and anger because damn, can't he rest a bit? Answer is obviously “ha-ha... nope”, so what can I do... Song's title is “Beyond” or “Transcendence” at least no dancing is detected this time:

Wait, I'm taking that back – he just couldn't stay still for long! *facepalm* There's a saying here that goes like “stupid head makes the legs suffer” - now I finally get its meaning. Oh well, being reckless idiot must the part of his manly charm. Anyway, it's a (Lunar?) New Year's songs medley, starting with his own thematic track – I think I shared it before – idk other titles, sorry:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT4TkLvYWKU

Another “what in the fresh hell he's wearing?!” entry in my veeery long hit hate list – I kinda dig the concept (Little Prince, anyone?), but execution is clunky at best, can't believe stylists did his fantastic proportions and ultra tiny waist this dirty. Thankfully, song is super cute – it's called “Under the cloud” - and little singer makes it even cuter, end result verging on diabetes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C_GuLzDMf4

I have a lot of words about pretty much everything going on here, but I'd rather keep them for the sake of our long-lasting relationship – he cannot fault me for not making an effort on my part))) At least he grew out of this phase... or so I hope:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFesRpWjbxk

Bonus: dance video I promised last time – some sort of promo material (?) for his yet to be released Qing dynasty drama. He lacks confidence and is a little slow, resulting in some missed beats, but otherwise it's big success for a self-proclaimed “lively giant spider”)))

Hot pink cast sounds totally like something he would do - I recall fans lol-ing at him buying some super expensive girly rainbow watch and flaunting it big time. Boy really loves colors and loud fashion)))

Found it, I knew it was somewhere in my archives!
First is failed attempt from culinary show where he was a judge/captain - at least audience enjoyed zoom in on his pretty hands lol)))

Here are the dramas I'm queueing up:

🇰🇷🎭 Crazy Love (recommended by @hopefulromantic and is, as I recall, @kathryn51 's all-time favorite drama)

🇰🇷🎭 Wild Romance (recommended by @midnight and is also something like her all-time favorite drama)

🇰🇷🎭 Busted S1 (recommended by @hopefulromantic and also, just today, @britney )

🇰🇷🎭 The Spy Who Loved Me (recommended by @attiton as it seems the sort of show I'd like; the alternative here is Royal Secret Agent)

🇰🇷🎭 The Verge of Insanity (recommended by a large number of Beanies, including @leetennant @kurama and @reply1988 on the "Underrated Dramas" Drama Chat the other week)

I don’t know about the others but I can definitely recommend VERGE (2021). It became an unexpected 2021 favorite. Well done all around. It’s kind of funny because I use VERGE as an example of how a kdrama writer can nail the ending and how kdrama endings don’t have to be crash landings.
I say funny because VERGE’s screen writer Jung Do-yoon was screen writer for my most detested kdrama of 2017: KBS’s WITCH’S COURT. I was in a very distinct minority because folks here seemed to love it. I just couldn’t stand how the FL treated the ML in the drama. A personal thing.

Hi DB Open theaders!

It’s been a minute since I’ve done this. Let’s see if I remember how it works.
The week has been strange in my real life world, so drowning it out with kdramas. Yes, that sounds incredibly healthy, right?

Favorite show this week was Lovely Runner. Byun Woo-seok is just LOVELY, isn’t he? And being 33, totally age-appropriate in my book. He’s the same age as all my favorites (kpop idols and actors, except Gong Yoo, of course). Which also makes me SO GLAD that he had the foresight to do his military commitment early in his 20’s because he’s on FIRE and I can’t imagine he won’t be able to book any show he wants after this one. He’s only a couple years younger than Kim Young Kwang and some other model turned actors, but it did take him a bit longer to become a great actor. And that’s totally alright with me! I’m glad to have someone new to fawn over. (Really, I’m been fawning over him for a few years, just waiting for his start to rise).

Second favorite show: Queen Of Tears. My secretary (who I got turned on to kdramas a few years ago) finally started this one on my recommendation and she usually only binges dramas. She came to me this morning and was like, “What do you like about this drama? It’s depressing and she’s D-Y-I-N-G!” I told her it gets better, but she refuses to watch it until she knows Kim Ji-won will live.

Third favorite show: Eye Love You. Finished this very cute, but just inherently “Japanese” drama. Why the wide eyed overacting, Japan? I loved uri Korean ML, and my husband loved uri Japanese FL, but it just dragged by the end.

Some happier memories this week:
Daughter and son are at a residential high school out of state. It’s an academically rigorous program that one has to gain acceptance and interview weekend was last weekend which my daughter participated as a student leader.

Daughter: Mom, I pretended to be an extrovert (just acted like all my friend) and just made all the kids feel uncomfortable and made all the parents feel like their kid was like everyone else.
Me: So who did you meet?
Daughter: Oh, this Korean kid and his dad.
Me: AND?????????
Daughter: Just his dad kept telling me all his kid’s test scores and I was like, oh, I got that too, and yeah, I play that instrument too, and yeah, he needs to pick up that secondary instrument and we could put him in an ensemble, and yeah, I want to be a doctor too, and basically made his dad realize his son wasn’t any different than any of us “average” kids here.
Me: You probably burst is bubble a bit.
Daughter: Just trying to scare them straight mom. He’ll probably just want to come more. I also told him how amazing the teachers are.

Moral of the story: Maybe I can get that Korean son-in-law!
2nd Moral: Math Genius started playing golf now and yeah, I’d like him as a son-in-law too. Daughter is a golfer too.
3rd Moral: I am so glad I’m here and she’s there so that I’m not that annoying Asian mother who sets her...

I was looking over the Again My Life weecaps and it once again made me miss the recaps of yore. I also wondered if we currently have any beanies that know Korean or picked up on the references in Again My Life such as the "saved in my heart". When I first saw that moment in the show and Hee Woo's reaction to it, I didn't get it and weecaper didn't mention it so I didn't really think about it; just chalked it up to a korean thing that goes over my western head. This year I learned the reference was due to it being Park Jihoon's catchphrase that he created/originated years in the future (based on the timeline of the show at that point).

Min Soo's character confuses me so much haha. Even after all this time.

Eye Love you is now on Viki. Which means properly translated- Much fuller Japanese translation, and complete Korean translation. It's not like there was a large amount of Korean, but there was enough to drag the viewing down.
Personally, I would not recommend watching it on Netflix. The combination of the story and the half translation slows the story down too much. (Or if you must, have it on silent in the background to enjoy Chae Jong Hyeop's beautiful smiles. There are quite a lot of them, unlike Castaway Diva where he spent most of the time looking troubled)
( I do think there is enough Korean in it that it should at least have a listing or a tag on here as well)

🫘Beansprout Award🌱 for letting us know it is on Viki fully subbed. I had not noticed that.
I think it is a Japanese drama because 90% of the cast speak Japanese so it makes sense it is not listed on this site as it is a distinct Japanese style of drama that is an acquired taste.

I am not/would not want you to think I am complaining. But I am standing here saying Chae Jong Hyeop! And he smiles while speaking Korean! :)

The Korean that is not subbed is on purpose, and it gave me good practice in my Korean listening skills, translating it for my husband. Lol! And at the end, everything is subbed that he says throughout through flashbacks.

Do you have a reference to the production company saying it is on purpose? Because a Japanese viewer would get Korean subbed, and a Korean viewer would get Japanese subbed.
Even if you are right, I thought it went too slowly to bother going right to the end to find the subbing to make it worthwhile.

I’m just speaking from my own experience. I watched it on Netflix first when it came out. Then I watched it with my VPN set on Japan to watch the rest of the episodes. Both times I had subtitles that were in English. I found that in both instances whenever the female lead would hear the male lead’s thoughts she would not be able to understand them, so therefore those thoughts were not subtitled. However, at the end, after she realizes that she has to be with him because she loves him, all of his thoughts are now subtitled that she remembers in a flashback. This way the audience knows that he has liked her for a lot longer, and even before she had any inkling that he cared about her all. I’m just assuming here, but if the subtitles were in Japanese, you would’ve not gotten any subtitles, except for maybe the beginning when the book was read in Korean, in the middle, when he is speaking English at the conference and also when he speaks Korean to his “Noona,“ and then at the end, the Korean subtitles coming back at the flashbacks. Someone could probably test out this theory that had time. 🤪

We’re watching this show predominantly from the POV of the female lead, so meant to be in the dark if we don’t understand Korean either. (Not a kdrama-phile, that Japanese girl. 😂)

This is not a rec, because I haven't listened to it yet. But Spotify just rec'd a new to me podcast around Korean and Chinese dramas it looks like.
Some of the episode topics look interesting and like things ove seen discussed occasionally on DB.
Such as: My Dearest unpacked through a Confucian lense.
Autistic Coded characters: Lan Wangji in The Untamed
Also looks like some crossover eps with other pods and some interviews with people who live in Korea or who have visited.
The pod is called Afternoona Asks.

Has DB been loading very slowly for you guys? I can still check my notifications, which'd take me to a specific post/comment, but I can't go to anyone's or my fanwall (that's why I have to ask you guys here).
