Beanie level: Errand boy

Trying to figure out what word put my Ha Jung-woo beanie recs comment into moderation 🤔🤔

I think it’s not you, it’s DB – there’s a notice from staff on the front page that they’re having technical issues with the spam filter. My perfectly innocent comment on ‘Love in Contract’ is also in moderation.

Watching Narco-Saints and Netflix’s tendency to take liberties with the translation is really grating on me. How does “Don’t worry. There won’t be any trouble” get replaced with “Don’t eat too much at the buffet. You’ll get sick.”?! This is just one of many examples and I’m only on Ep. 3 right now.

Is this their attempt at making the dialogue funnier or are they trying to Westernise it? I just don’t get why you’d tell a story about Koreans and then remove all Korean flavour from it.

wow.. this is new.. i have seen some bad translations (from the very little korean I understand).. but where did buffet come from????
    It’s not even funny…
    this is sad..

I realised after starting Ep. 4 that it was showing English closed captions. I changed to normal English subs and the translations are fine there. Normally don’t use Eng CC so I have no idea why the system defaulted to that and I obviously didn’t check.

Still don’t understand why the closed captions would be different though…

oh!! thanks goodness.. but still doesn’t make sense.. glad you were able to fix it! Let me know how you liked the series..

Closed captions are for dubs and dubs often take a lot of liberties to match up words and mouths.

        2
        1

That’s why I cry a little bit everytime I see a show goes to Netflix and not Viki. 😂

This one is a Netflix original right? It’s literally their production, shouldn’t they have had more time to make the subtitles? Even if they don’t care about quality, shouldn’t they at least try to no make it so obvious? 🙄

    3
    1

Yup it’s a Netflix show. They’ve even dubbed the show in multiple languages. What I don’t understand is why they differentiate between normal subs and closed captions…

      2
      1

Google says. “While video subtitles are intended for viewers who can’t understand the language being spoken, captions are intended for viewers who can’t hear the audio […] visual display to provide additional or interpretive information”.

        That helps?

        1
        1

They also generally tend to be transcriptions of the dubs.

I miss when kdramas had a beginning and an end, all within 8 weeks.

Huh. Can’t read it but I guess all we need to figure out is the “2” and the “2024”. I agree with you.

    2
    1

Ah sorry. I’ve set Chrome to auto-translate for me so I see it in English lol. But yeah you got the point!

I was pretty certain, it was going this route considering how the pd and writer hinted at it in an interview. But I may not tune in for that. The episodic format is a bigger hurdle for me in addition to how I want dramas to end by 8 weeks.

When the ratings took off, it was pretty obvious that the production company would do this. With the episodic nature, I do think they can make it work, but the charm’s been wearing off. At least they aren’t rushing it and can probably keep the cast if they wait til 2024.

    5
    0

I agree. But this kind of drama can make it work. It’s about Young-Woo’s growth as a character. It doesn’t depend on a big bad guy to catch for example. They want the original casting, they will have to wait for Kang Tae-Oh’s comeback from the army, they will have the time to work on it too like they had for this season waiting for Park Eun-Bin.

Ooo! Now this explains the inconsistency. I don’t mind a S2 and would love to see the same cast because the cases and the protagonist’s growth were refreshing to watch. I only hope if they are further going to expand the story based on ratings in S2, I want them to be prepared with proper character arcs.

TIL Café Minamdang has 18 episodes and here I thought I would finally collect my bean and be done with it this week 😖.

Lee Jong-suk and Big Mouth are trending on Twitter. I haven’t even watched the episode yet but almost feels like I am sharing everyone’s excitement. Love this sense of community where thousands of strangers across the world feel the same emotions at the same time.

#BVIPP2
Final rec is this perfect OST for a sports drama. The lyrics and the rousing chorus are so well done.

I liked this show and the OST as well. Great rec!

I agree this is a perfect theme song for the tone of this drama and I loved it. I can’t remember any song from Racket boys even though I loved the drama. In contrast I won’t forget this one.

The standout for me from an all-around great OST.

Starting my #BVIPP recs with my favourite OST this year by far and it’s used brilliantly in the show too.

Watching Ep. 1 of Adamas and already feel exhausted seeing Lee Geung-young is in it. This would be my 4th drama in a row starring him if I keep watching.

Pleasantly surprised to see In the Soop: Friendcation listed in the currently recapping section of DB. Haven\’t seen a variety show there before even though there were some truly hilarious variety recaps here back in the day (esp. loved the 2D1N ones!).

I want to watch this show so badly but isn’t it on Disney and therefore unavailable to the US? Stupid.

Yes so far so I’m going to have to get creative to watch 😬

Read a rumour that Part 2 of Alchemy of Souls will have Go Youn-jung (OG Nak-su) as the female lead. Hasn\’t been confirmed but it makes me all the more curious about where the story will go…

5
17

For me, it is a disaster already. Unless part 2 is a prequel, which is unlikely because all the other actors have presumably signed up for part 2, I will have no interest in watching it and I will just stick to recaps to know any mysteries that would have not been solved in Part 1. This news truely sucks because there is a high potential part 1 ending is going to be heartbreaking.

@sicarius I now applaud you for being clever and getting out of this muck earlier than anyone😂😂😂

I’m enjoying the show too much to worry about how Part 1 will end lol. I’ll just keep my fingers crossed especially since this is just a rumour so far.

rumour is rumour only if project does not end up being a smash hit or commercially successful.. like with Hwayugi 😛

I wish they hadn’t revealed that. It feels like such a big spoiler.

    1
    1

A part of me is wondering if this rumor is intentional. They are trying to test the waters to see what will the audience reaction be if they go this route. But yeah that’s too much wishful thinking.

    2
    2

Yes, I too thought it might be a marketing scheme but I highly doubt they will change the plot given the fact that Hong Sisters are not rookie writers and would accept changes to their script.

      1
      0

Quite possible. If they haven’t filmed yet, there’s definitely scope for lots of changes.

It’s really weird. First, 30 episodes story is very long… I already found that some episodes were too long.

But the change of actress is weird when they already burn one of the bodies…

    1
    0

I don’t understand the PD saying they couldn’t fit everything into 20 episodes. Honestly, the story has been meandering a bit. If the Hong Sisters could just write a tight story 20 episodes would be fine.

I definitely think there is truth to this rumor but I don’t understand how it would be possible since they burned the body. Magic, I guess. The drama’s okay for me. I watch without being invested but this all sounds like it is heading for a Hong Sisters style trainwreck.

Just found out Alchemy of Souls is going to have 2 parts? The 20 episode current show is just Part 1. Why does this feel so ominous 😣

2

I recently heard about this too. D: I’m scared because this could mean a lot of plot padding, but also I’m curious because I never got into Chinese traditional dramas and this feels a lot like one…

    1
    1

I guess we have to wait and see the level of world-building in the show. Maybe that’ll lessen the plot padding? But frankly most Chinese xianxia dramas also tend to be overly long with lots of ‘arcs’ that go nowhere. I liked the first two episodes a lot so hopefully my concern is premature 😅.

    Why?! Why?!

    2
    1

Netflix strikes again! It is no wonder that they are struggling. Still, given that the Hong sisters are really giving us a Chinese Fantasy Costume Drama- but in Korean and with Korean actors- the greater number of episodes is actually fitting given that the Chinese shows often have fifty episodes or more.

Cho Seung-woo is going to be playing a classical pianist-turned-lawyer in his next work 🤦‍♀️. And it\’s by the writer of \’Thirty-nine\’. I\’m 😑.
