#Be melodramatic,
The title must be a pun, because they introduce and say everything in the most non-melodramatic way but at the same time it is so powerful!
Waiting for ep 2 recap! I love you show.

That was so sad! Kids can be so cruel because they don\’t know the price of so many things in life.
But the ending scene was acted, directed and edited to perfection.

#devil ep 3
Something is off with the whole tone of this show and the major reason is the editing of this show.
And also I think the female lead is miscast…

1
6

I felt something off from ep 1, but it keeps feeling off until ep 4. Haha. Why do you think FL is miscast? I find her character off at times, but I don’t know exactly why. I do think at times she seems so young and naive.

    1
    1

I doze off as soon the FL comes on screen…. she just lacks the charisma that all the other 3 actors ooze off. Also there are a lot of passive aggressive scenes that the female lead has and they just fall flat. Moreover, there is supposedly an air of innocence and naivety around her but in most of the scenes she looks so old that it feels contrivied. This part is one of my major issues with the show, I think they should have gone with Jang Nara. They require a powerhouse actor to pull the role off.

      1
      1

Yi Kyung was a school girl when Ha Rip was 60. Jang Nara is a power house but she wouldn’t fit the school girl part, also she’s older than JKH.

I think Ha Rip and Yi Kyung does not complement each other at all. Some characters bicker a lot but they just complement each other that it feels organic and natural eventhough they have a huge age gap. But Ha Rip and Yi Kyung are not actually bickering, it’s mostly just Ha Rip being passive aggresive. And all their interactions feel flat and one sided. Maybe…it’s because of their age? He is 70 and she is 20 something. So they just can’t click? Haha

        1
        1

Jang Nara is older than JKH O.o, well, okay Hahhaha!
That was the first name I thought, of who can be innocent as well as passive aggressive and and can still pass as a school girl, lol!
But I agree, they don’t have any chemistry either even as a father daughter pair, and I won’t stand a romance plot here… (not at all)

          1
          2

Hahaha. I rejected any romance plot from the moment it was confirmed that Ha Rip is actually 70yo.

By the way, are you planning to continue watching this? Hehe

Yes, I am still watching it becasue I love devil and lee el and I enjoy JKY’s super weak and flippant character…

    @oppafangirl,

You’re most welcome! Talking Cupboard’s sageuk timeline is the greatest. I watched THE STORY OF THE FIRST KING’S FOUR GODS and also JUMONG / PRINCE OF THE LEGEND and KINGDOM OF THE WINDS a while back to warm up for ARTHDAL CHRONICLES. Song Il-gook played both Jumong, founder of Koguryeo, and his grandson, Daemusin. I got distracted and haven’t gotten around yet to PRINCESS JA MYUNG GO to see what happens with Daemusin’s son, Prince Hodong. One of these days. So many sageuks, so little time.

It was fun to follow up THE KING’S DAUGHTER, SOO BAEK HYANG with SONG OF THE PRINCE / BALLAD OF SUH DONG — because Jo Hyun-jae played his own (great?)-grandpa (Seja Myongnong = future King Seong) and King Mu .

So cool, I actually got myself a story book for reading in Korean about traditional korean tales and even mythological, I will do it in complete chronological order! Hahah! So little time ><!

@pakalanapikake I tried JA MYUNG GO recently but it was too slow for me… then I looked for KING’S DAUGHTER but only found low-resolution versions where the audio wasn’t even synched. 😢

@shach, here is a small comment, focusing on why I loved the show Reply 1988 (I want it on my wall, so its here)
The show is my first 10/10 show, the nostalgia of growing up in almost the same time frame (okay I was not a teenager in 1988 but all the technology came considerably later to India and so it was the same when I was growing up).
Every episode was a trip down the memory lane of what me and my friends were up to in the neighborhood, whose house, we were going to eat, whose mom cooks the worst (oh dear, we had to ensure not to be playing at their places around lunch time).
Whose father came back to work at what time, that food sharing was like so much fun.
Growing up with some friends older siblings failing in exams and then taking years to get to university (the son of my neighbour below, took five years to get into university, that even not the one he was planning on going, and he was the talk of whole neighborhood all those years)
In neighborhoods where every one has an advice to give, I even went to swimming with my neighborhood ahjummas and it was really funny!
Also I could relate most to the older sister a lot, becasue I also did maths at university but I will add fast she is almost nothing like me, or more like, other than maths there is nothing common about us, other than more things, I was the only person on my university campus who refused to take parts in strike because I thought the strike reason was stupid and make the situation worse, in the end my university teachers got worried that I will be bullied, so they made me go through back doors, and in hindsight, it did make it worse and after the strike, every one blamed the strike for bad food situation, lol!
The father and daughter relation of older sister and father was most heart warming! I could not watch more than one episode a day, because the tears were making it impossible to see anything.
The scene when father dropped the sister at the gosiwon to study for civil exams was so well done. It reminded me of my parents dropping me off at the university!

The background score was killer, it is still my fav one song to listen, when I feel a bit down. I leave it here for others to enjoy!
Now your comments on it….

Beautifully written! I love this show, because it gives me similar nostalgia feel, although I was way younger during that time, but the way community was portrayed it wasn’t that different in my Soviet bloc – country, adults trying their best to get by, and children roaming the neighborhood, looking for next stupid thing to do 🙂 My fights with siblings were very similar too, that’s why I think I like Bora character and identify with her, although I wasn’t that studious. I think the beauty of the show lays in the fact that it touch the heart of growing up in pre digital era, no matter what country you are from.

      * I was not even born then, it just that 1988 in korea is equivalent to mid 2000’s in India.

Ah, so now, is picking the title game time, keeping up with my culture mixed withKorean tradition, what do you want to be addressed with unnie, oppa, sunbae-nim?

          2

The titles confuse me so I’ll stay with my nickname 😉
I would be miserable if I couldn’t bite back at someone just because she/he is older, I have a bit of Bora temper.
